New smartphone-friendly website to debut on Friday Redesigned website will include larger, clearer photographs, one-click news stories

By Bugle Staff To meet the ever-growing need for advanced digital communications, Valley View School District 365U will introduce a new and improved smartphone-friendly website later this week.

“This website will help create new and engaging community conversations on our journey to becoming one of the top performing school districts in the state,” said VVSD Superintendent James Mitchem Jr. “Excellent twoway communication with our stakeholders is vital to the support of our students and staff, which is a key pillar in our Strategic Plan.”

The district website will feature

an easy-to-read calendar, VVSD’s anonymous bullying reporting tool (Sprigeo), “Ask the Superintendent,” a new Back-To-School section loaded with information on free or reduced cost meals, daily meal menus, student health and immunizations, 2016-17 early release dates, registration and school supplies, as well as access to the online meal payment app, My School Bucks, the VVSD online fee

payment app, email notifications and VVSD social media.

In addition, the redesigned website will include larger and clearer photographs and one-click news stories with an easy-to-search archive containing news and feature stories from recent months.

“Families, staff and community members want a simple way to connect to our district and find the information they are looking

for,” said VVSD Digital Learning Specialist Nicole Eimer, who spearheaded development of the redesigned website. “We hope this redesign not only gives our schools a fresh and new look, but also showcases our efforts to improve communication districtwide.”

The website’s URL will remain www.vvsd.org. The debut of the redesigned, user-friendly website marks the beginning of a plan

to phase out the current Edline websites for all 22 VVSD schools and replace them with fresh and engaging Schoolwires websites hosted by Blackboard. This transition will simplify current methods of maintaining teacher web pages, while incorporating more engaging and digitallyconnected classroom tools.

Each student currently has an Edline account where grades for each class are listed on a regular basis. Blackboard is an educational technology company who recently bought out ParentLink, which the district uses for telephone communications. Blackboard will now streamline all services.

Valley View Early Childhood Center and VVSD’s Secondary Transition Experience Program (S.T.E.P.) will be the first two schools to pilot the new look. All five middle schools will make the change before the end of the year with both high schools and all 12 elementary schools following suit in 2017.

Community Service Day unites area programs Approximately 1,200 employees, students from 23 campuses and 3 central offices participated in national service day event By laura katauskas staff reporter

During its eighth annual Community Service Day, employees and students across the country at Rasmussen College closed their office doors and opened their hearts to area organizations.

Approximately 1,200 employees and students from its 23 campuses and three central offices participated in the national service day event July 15. The college’s Romeoville/ Joliet campus came out to volunteer at Cornerstone Services, which provides programs to help people with disabilities reach their full potential through engaging classes, guest speakers and special outings.

“Community service is at the heart of what we do. Rasmussen is steeped in community service--it’s part of our core values,” said Diane Nowaczyk, campus director.

The 115-year-old school, based originally in Minnesota, bases its core values on giving back to the community, supporting education in fields that do just that. Rasmussen College is a regionally accredited private college and Public Benefit Corporation that is dedicated

to changing lives through highdemand educational programs and public service.

Its programs change with the times, building its curriculum around the needs of the community.

Currently, the school primarily focuses on health care, which is seen as one of the largest needs in today’s society.

In earlier times, it was accounting and secretarial because that was the climate of the era. Employees and students from the college spent Community Service Day participating in a mock trip activity to Las Vegas to help teach valuable skills. The Community Services – Personal Enrichment Program location was set up with a variety of Las Vegas scenes and Rasmussen College volunteers helped facilitate the stations to help ensure a fun and engaging experience for participants.

“I personally found it great to help out a community partner that we know is important to this area,” said Nowaczyk . “And I just think it’s pretty amazing that 1,200 employees around the country all close their doors on this day and go out and volunteer because they are dedicated to community service.”

Rasmussen’s involvement with Cornerstone Services is two-fold-many of its students go on to graduate and work in the field at Cornerstone.

Nowaczyk explains Rasmussen sees many non-traditional adult learners, offering programs that will

help students gain the experience needed to enter a new job field while still working to support a family and themselves.

“We see so many students who come to us as adults or here in the community from RHS that are working forty hours a week to keep

the family going,” said Nowaczyk.

“Our programs work so that they can earn a certificate that can get them a job in the field they want, be able to pick up tuition reimbursement and continue with an associate’s degree and then a bachelor’s degree, all while working in the field.”

Looking to build relationships with the community, the Romeoville Police Department launched a new young athletics club this summer.

Combining basketball and the principals of the Character Counts program, which is a framework for teaching good character and is composed of six ethical values including trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship, the department created a six-week program open to children ages 9-11.

“We wanted to put together a program that we thought would be fun, but also a good learning experience,” said Deputy Chief Steve Lucchesi. “We wanted to create a program that was first and foremost educational for kids.

Second, it had to be fun, and fun had to be a close second.”

Meeting from 12 to 3 p.m. at the Romeoville Recreation Center each Wednesday, Sergeant Chris Burne and Officer Mark Przybylski spent the first 45 minutes of the program engaging the group with practical exercises covering the Character Counts pillars, teaching ways that each pillar could be implemented

in their lives under a variety of situations.They then took to the floor to teach the fundamentals of basketball.

“The kids seem to like it a lot and parents have expressed their positive comments on the program as well,” said Lucchesi. “Personally, it has exceeded our expectations.

We are always looking for ways to reach out to the community.”

Lucchesi explains that the police department teaches the DARE program to fifth graders, the GREAT (Gang Resistance Education And Training) program to sixth graders, and other classes to other age groups.

“We wanted to present this program to Pre-DARE age kids.

The program is very successful this year, and the kids continually tell us how much they enjoy it,” said Lucchesi.

VVSD free or reduced-price meal applications available on-line Paper applications will still be available in all schools and VVSD Administration Center Applications for free or reducedpriced meals for the 2016-17 school year in Valley View School District 365U are now available to complete and submit using the new online application on the VVSD website.

Households must apply for meal benefits every school year.

Utilizing the website application, which is available in both English and Spanish, is the fastest way to process an application. Completed applications will be processed in approximately 10 days from the time they are submitted. Approval/

denial letters will be mailed once the application is processed.

Anyone who recently received a Direct Certification letter from VVSD, does not need to complete a household meal application.

Students approved for reduced price meal benefits will be charged 25 cents for breakfast and 40 cents for lunch.

For those who do not wish to apply online, paper applications will be available in all schools and at the VVSD Administration Center in late July/early August.

Note that students who have been approved for free meal benefits may also be eligible for a partial waiver of student fees.

Betsy Koetz

Martinez ‘Derby Girl’ recalls her brief brush with skating glory Like most kids, Betsy Koetz liked to roller skate as a child.

But the A. Vito Martinez Middle School Dean’s Office Secretary had no idea her youthful fun would turn into a brief career competing in Roller Derby.

Koetz says it all started about three or four years ago when she and her husband, Trevan, were watching a television special on the sport that got its start in Chicago 75 years ago and has blossomed into a worldwide sensation.

“I mentioned to him that roller

derby was something that I always wanted to do,” Koetz recalled. “He had a friend who was involved in it so he talked to her.”

The next thing she knew, she was lacing up the skates and trying out for the Illinois Valley Vixens in Ottawa.

“The last time I roller skated before that was when I took my 14-year-old daughter to a birthday party when she was 5 or 6,” Koetz said. “There was a pretty big gap. It was tough to get back on skates.”

But she made the team as a blocker, playing both offense and defense as she and other blockers tried to help her team’s jammers score points by passing the other team’s pack.

Koetz, a 16-year Martinez veteran who also serves as Student Services secretary while overseeing attendance and managing lockers, spent a year with the Ottawa club before joining the Black Widow Derby Ghouls who were in the process of moving from Tinley Park to the Main Street Rink in Romeoville.

“I grew up skating there,” said the Jane Addams Middle School and Bolingbrook High School graduate.

“It was fun.”

Her career with the Derby Ghouls came to a sudden stop in a practice bout when she was blindsided and taken down.

“I landed full force on my knees and ended up doing the splits. I don’t do splits,” she said. “So I took some time off to recuperate.”

Koetz returned to the rink briefly but family commitments and time constraints forced her to retire.

Shortly after she left, the Derby Ghouls disbanded because their rink was sold.

“It was just three years. But it was the best three years of my life,” she said. “I do miss it for the exercise and the friendships. Once you’re a Derby Girl, you’re always a Derby Girl.”

Bolingbrook High School AFJROTC Drill Camp gets underway Aug. 8 Cadets new to the Bolingbrook High School Air Force JROTC program will have an opportunity to get a head start on the new school year during Drill Camp Aug. 8-11.

The Drill Camp, which takes place from 8 a.m. to noon, introduces new cadets to the JROTC program and begins the process of teaching fundamentals that lead to student success.

The four day program is run by Senior Cadets who also serve as year-long mentors to new arrivals.

The Drill Camp will take place in the BHS Drill Hall, Room E-208.

Forest Preserve District’s ‘Discovery Isle’ Program Runs through Aug. 24

The Forest Preserve District of Will County’s summertime “Discovery Isle” program ends on Aug. 24. The program is held from 1 to 3 p.m. on Wednesdays at Isle a la Cache Museum, 501 E. Romeo Road. The free, all-ages program features different activities or demonstrations that focus on natural or cultural history. Search for critters on the trail one week, and meet a voyageur from the 18th century the next. Depending on the weather, programs may be held indoors or outside. Drop in anytime between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Panel addresses county’s paratransit needs Congressman Bill Foster says putting the issue at the forefront holds great meaning

Bud’s Ambulance marketing manager Laura Daley knows private services such as the one she works for see many challenges in serving as a resource to those needing transportation in Will County.

She said it’s heartbreaking when riders are turned away for lack of coordination between service providers. The tipping point, according to Daley, comes down to issues of economic feasibility and legality.

“That’s where a huge problem starts,” she said. “It’s kind of a huge can of worms from there.”

A number of experts and stakeholders involved in paratransit transportation of seniors and the disabled were on hand last week for a panel discussion on the needs of those living in Will County.

Foster said he’s pleased by the ways in which transportation providers in the area have responded to service needs, added that the system needs more work.

In 1990, Congress passed the Americans with Disabilities Act. Since that time, public transportation providers such as Pace have made efforts to improve paratransit services individuals living in the communities they serve.

Still, some obstacles still exist.

“Paratransit fares are already subsidized more than any other form of public transit, and they’re consuming an ever-greater portion of transportation agency budgets,” Foster said.

In 2012, paratransit services represented 12 percent of transit agency costs on average. That number, Foster said, will increase as baby boomers begin to retire in greater numbers.

Foster said solutions are needed to curb transportation costs moving forward, without having a negative impact on services provided.

“I know that many agencies have some success in transitioning more-abled paratransit riders to traditional transit through travel training, vehicle accessibility, and reduced or eliminated fares,” he said. “These are all steps in the right direction, but we need to do more.”

Nearly two-thirds of adults over age 70 have hearing loss that doctors consider “clinically meaningful.” I n plain English that means as people age, they are likely to become hard of hearing. Many of those people, however, don’t get the help they need, often because they simply cannot afford it.

“The prevalence of hearing loss almost doubles with each age decade of life,” says Dr. Frank Lin, an otolaryngologist at Johns Hopkins University, but for older people, he adds, “there are multiple barriers that prevent individuals from getting their hearing loss addressed.”

Lin spoke about the subject to a group of journalists in a recent phone conference sponsored by a Washington, D.C., advocacy group the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare.

He is a co-author of a June report issued by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine that recommends better access and support for treating hearing loss.

Lin told the group that although hearing loss is a normal part of the aging process, “hearing care is inaccessible” to many seniors.

He said studies over the last five years have shown that such loss “can increase the risk of cognitive decline.”

Using data from a longitudinal study (one that tracks data from the same people repeatedly over many years or decades) that began in 1958, Lin and his colleagues at Johns Hopkins found that those with hearing loss had a higher probability of developing dementia.

The more severe the loss, the more likely the dementia.

That isn’t the only problem.

Hearing loss is also associated with a greater risk for falls and other accidents because a person can’t hear traffic or a smoke alarm in their home.

often feel isolated and shun normal social contacts because they can’t hear others speak.

That’s a blow to productive aging, the goal promoted by the late Dr. Robert Butler, a well-known gerontologist who fought against ageism.

So why, then, is hearing care so inaccessible?

Cost may be the major barrier.

Nearly all expenses for hearing care must be paid out-of-pocket, and for many seniors on fixed incomes, that’s sometimes hard to do.

Lin told me the average cost of two hearing aids is $4,700 and rarely covered by insurance.

Medicare doesn’t cover hearing exams, hearing aids, or exams for fitting hearing aids.

It does, however, cover diagnostic hearing and balance exams but only if your doctor orders those tests to see if you need medical treatment.

In that case, if a person has traditional Medicare and a Medicare supplement policy, often called a Medigap, he or she has to pay 20 percent of the approved amount for the exam. Some Medicare Advantage plans may include hearings tests as part of the extra benefits they offer.

The National Committee and other advocacy groups are campaigning to add a hearing benefit to Medicare’s benefit package.

Their campaign is bucking the trend in Washington to cut Medicare benefits

by raising the age of eligibility, making richer seniors pay more, and requiring those with traditional Medigaps to have more skin in the game.

Politicians have already begun redesigning Medigap policies to make seniors pay more out of pocket for their care.

Beginning in 2020, for example, insurers will not be allowed to sell Medigap policies that cover the deductibles for Medicare Part B that pays for physicians’ services, lab tests and hospital outpatient care.

The theory behind this shift is that seniors will pay more and the government less thus helping to save Medicare money.

I asked Dan Adcock, the National Committee’s policy director, about the chances of adding benefits to treat hearing loss, or for that matter vision and dental care, when the focus has been on cutting benefits of all kinds.

He said one major source of funds to pay for hearing aids could come from lowering the price of what Medicare pays for drugs.

The 2003 legislation that gave seniors a drug benefit also prohibited the government from negotiating prices for the drugs it buys. Drug makers strongly oppose such negotiations.

Adcock said he remains hopeful.

If better hearing means a decrease in dementia, falls and accidents, fewer people would need treatment for those conditions. The savings could potentially “pay” for the hearing aids, he said.

For now, though, seniors and their families are on their own.

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine offer an Action Guide for Individuals and Families that suggests actions people can take to prevent hearing loss and strategies for families to cope with it when it occurs. It’s available at www. nas.edu/hearing.

Heart Haven Outreach raises funds through “Christmas in July” event Organization focuses on supporting teens experiencing challenges at school, home lives

By Bugle Staff Heart Haven Outreach supporters came out to golf, dine and give a little back to the organization, reaching out to support and mentor teens during its 13th annual Golf Outing and Christmas in July Gala.

Held at the Bolingbrook Golf Club July 14, many sponsors contributed including this year’s Event Sponsor, WeatherTech; dinner sponsors, DuPage Township and Robbins Schwartz and lunch sponsors: AMITA Health, Sebert Landscaping, and William Blair.

Golfers took the course for 18 holes and were treated to games along the way, including the “Closest to the Pin” contest where the winner left with a five-day, four-night stay for two guests in a Master Room at The Grand Mayan in Nuevo Vallarta or The Grand Mayan in Riviera Maya. The evening activities included a social hour with restaurants such as Gordon Biersch and Nancy’s Pizza. Guests were able to feast on the many fares of Bolingbrook including Ashbury’s, Bar Louie, BD’s Mongolian Grill, IPic, Longhorn Steakhouse, Mago

Grill and Cantina, Olive Garden, The Nest and Andy’s Frozen Custard.

Uncle Bubs BBQ from Westmont even had a booth serving food. This year’s M.C. was Scott Mackay of 95.9 The River.

“Christmas in July” would not be complete without presents. Patrons could bid on a plethora of baskets and participate in a silent auction to get their Christmas shopping done early while supporting a great cause.

All proceeds will go toward supporting Heart Haven Outreach whose members have made it their mission to open their hearts, and give their time and resources to Bolingbrook. The 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization focuses on supporting teens experiencing challenges at school or in their home lives. The group provides mentoring, tutoring and support to any high school student in the Valley View School District and surrounding area.

The group was organized by community leaders in 2004, opened its doors in January 2005 at 201 Canterbury Lane in Bolingbrook and expanded to Romeoville in 2012. H2O offers free transportation to any student in Bolingbrook and Romeoville to and from all of their programs.

H2O’s next fundraiser, the Heart Haven Hustle 5K Run is scheduled for Oct. 16 at the Promenade in Bolingbrook.

Galena golf course one of the top in the state

For a few years I had wanted to play The General at Eagle Ride Resort and Spa in Galena.

It is safe to say I was not disappointed.

Just looking out at the first hole from the clubhouse I was excited with what was in store.

My favorite courses are ones with great elevation changes and scenery and this no doubt fit the bill.

The first hole started with a sharp elevation change, a drop from the tee box to the fairway, allowing the hole to play much shorter than the 378-yard gold tees, which are the three-star ratings out of four. It would be the best hole at many golf courses, but here, it was just one of the better ones.

Next was a 528-yard par-5, which played mostly straight but played to a tight fairway all the way to the green. The third hole is a 143-yard downhill par3 with water to the right and bunkers to the front and left, making it a much harder hole than the scorecard suggests.

A short fourth hole at 354 yards is a slight dogleg left, with bunkers guarding a straight shot to the right side of the fairway.

That is followed by the hardest hole on the front nine, a 418yard par-4. It is a dogleg left with trees lining the dogleg on

the left and a tree that can get in the way of an approach shot to the right. There is a gully below the tree, meaning balls that hit the tree could be in big trouble.

The sixth hole is a dogleg right par-5 at 479 yards, with water guarding the dogleg. Long and brave hitters may be able to cut off the dogleg a bit to make the green reachable in two.

A slightly uphill par-3 seventh hole is just 130 yards, but has trouble all around it in long, thick grass.

The eighth hole is a 306yard dogleg right par-4 with a treelined to the right of the dogleg. A safe play out to the left makes the hole much longer, while a gutsy play to the right of the fairway can lead to a short wedge into the green, which is guarded by a stone wall behind the green, adding to the character.

The front nine finishes with a 390-yard par-4, which is uphill and plays longer than the distance. It also takes a good hit to get it to the fairway over some unplayable grass and a long approach shot is played to a green covered by a bunker.

The back nine starts with a 361-yard par-4, which doglegs right. Both sides of the fairway are lined with trees. No. 11 is a large drop par-3 at 152 yards. It plays much less than that due to

Miller wins 22nd Illinois Women’s Open

Stephanie Miller won the Phil Kosin Illinois Women’s Open at Mistwood Golf Club in Romeoville.

Stephanie Miller was near perfect last week as she claimed the title at the 22nd annual Phil Kosin Illinois Women’s Open at Mistwood Golf Club in Romeoville.

The University of Illinois senior to be tallied 43 straight bogey free holes before collecting a bogey on No. 17 on the final day, wrapped up her first tournament win since 2013.

“I guess I couldn’t be perfect all day,” Miller joked. “But I did get away with a lot. On 13, I hit it way right into the high grass and found it, thankfully. Then popped it out in front of the green and made an up and down and got away with that, so I was happy with the par there. I just tried to play well coming in, but I got a little excited on the parthree, but that’s all right. I was just thinking about one shot at a time.”

The two-time IHSA Class AA champion while at Stevenson fired three rounds of 69 to finish with a 9-under par 207, three shots better than Indiana resident Kelly Grassel, who also ended her tournament with 38 bogey free holes.

“This week was a great experience,” Grassel said. “I was pretty consistent. This course has some tricky holes, but it’s not too long and the greens were holding, so it was very scorable this week. I’m definitely happy with the string of no bogeys.

I missed a few greens but was able to get up and down, so I was happy about that.

“This was an encouraging

week for my game. I started making a few improvements and was hitting it a little bit farther, so to see that out on the course was encouraging, however there was a time when I was hitting further than I usually did and I wasn’t sure which club to play.”

Miller also battled with her playing partner, Brooke Ferrell, who was tied for the lead after both the first and second round.

Ferrell was only one shot behind Miller heading into the stretch run, but a nine on No. 15 dashed her hopes of winning this year after finishing second last year.

“Brooke was a great partner and is so nice, and her game is awesome,” Miller said. “She hit some great shots, and at the beginning, we were neck and neck. She would make birdie and I’d make birdie, and we had one on hole five where she stuck it to six inches and I stuck it to 2 1/2 feet, and we were like, ‘We’re here to play.’ Playing with a good partner is good for your game since you take your game to the next level and hit some good shots.”

Miller hit some of her best shots during the three hole stretch from holes five to seven where she strung together three straight birdies.

The top low professional score was former University of Illinois golfer Ember Schuldt, who carded a 71 on the final day and finished in fifth place with a two-under par 214.

The lone Voyager Media area athlete to make the cut was Bolingbrook resident Jessica Yuen, who finished tied for 23rd with a 230.

Next is a 466-yard par-5, which is reachable in two. However, it is tight and there is plenty of trouble around it to keep it from being easy. That is followed by a 423-yard par-4 that doglegs right and is lined with trees. It is rated the most difficult hole on the course.

The best hole on the course, in my opinion, is next. A par4, 341-yard hole that is straight downhill. It is such a deep drop that the green is nearly reachable off the tee. From the tee you can also see some great scenery off in the distance from the course and beyond. It is truly a muchsee hole.

The 15th hole is 170 yards that has a bunker in front of it. That is followed by a 380-yard hole that doglegs left and plays uphill to the green.

The closing holes feature a tight, 361-yard hole and a 500yard par-5 with split fairways to land your second shot.

Perhaps the most surprising part of the course were the slow greens. Typically at a course like this the greens are lightning quick, but this wasn’t the case. However, there were many slopes on both the greens and fairways that made things difficult, helping to contribute to a 136 slope from the gold tees.

Prime weekday fees are $135, so you will want to be sure to let the views sink in. In the evenings the rates can get down to $60, which is too good to pass up.

We played in the late afternoon and only saw one group the entire time. When the sun came out on the back nine the course felt as peaceful and beautiful as any course I have ever played.

There was even a hot air ballon which flew over us on the 18th hole as the sun was beginning to set, adding to the aura.

This course is a must play for all levels of golf fans. It isn’t quite as hard as anticipated, so even the novice can come out and enjoy his or her round. It is definitely worth full price to take a yearly trip out there. I imagine fall rates would be cheaper and I can only imagine how great it would be to play the course in the fall.

Men’s volleyball, soccer teams add to incoming freshmen classes Lewis men’s volleyball head coach Dan Friend has made two final additions for next season’s roster.

Incoming freshmen Kyle Bugee (Cupertino, Claif./Homestead) and Grant Holve (Carlsbad, Calif./ Carlsbad) have joined the Flyers for 2017.

Bugee (6-5, 195, outside hitter) was named to the 2016 U.S. Men’s Junior National Training Team. He played varsity volleyball at Homestead High School in Cupertino, California. He notched a hitting percentage of .326 with 293 kills and 27 aces to receive the 2014 Player of the Year Award along with the 2014 Central Coast Section Sophomore of the Year award. In 2014, his Bay-to-Bay club team won a medal in the NCVA Far Western Bid Tournament and placed third at the SCVA Boys’ Invitational Tournament.

“Kyle is a great addition to the team,” Friend said. “He is an extremely skilled and physical

player who will make our gym better right away.”

Holve (6-3, 165, outside hitter/ libero) was a three-year letter winner at Carlsbad High School where he was named to the CIF San Diego second team and won the CIF San Diego Athletic Sportsmanship award. As a senior he recorded a hitting percentage of .420. He helped his team to the championship and two runner up finishes at the CIF San Diego Open and he brings four years of experience with the Coast Volleyball Club.

“Grant is an experienced player who adds ball control and volleyball IQ to our team,” Friend said. “He will help add stability and look to make his impact.”

The duo joins previously announced recruits Zack Meyer (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South), TJ Murray (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Barrington), Joe Crosby (Walworth, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit), Ryan Van Loo (Burbank, Calif./John

“What an amazing honor for Amber,” Lewis head women’s track and field coach Dana Schwarting said. “She has put in a tremendous amount of work over the last four years both on and off the track.

Cook, a CoSIDA Academic AllAmerica First Team selection and 2016 NCAA Division II Indoor National Triple Jump Champion, finished her career with a 3.66 cumulative grade point average in marketing.

She helped Lewis to both the 2016 GLVC Indoor and Outdoor Championships as she won five out of six possible jumping events, earning her GLVC Indoor and Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year accolades. Cook added an All-America performance in the triple jump at the NCAA Indoor Championships, finishing fifth overall, helping the Flyers finish fourth overall as a team.

Tennis The Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced that the Lewis University men’s tennis team has claimed ITA All-Academic Team honors for the 2015-16 school-year.

The Flyers, led by ITA ScholarAthletes Chandler Stimpert (Graceland, Ill./Morton) and John Sutko (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards), registered a 3.21 cumulative grade point average as a team. The ITA AllAcademic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). Dear Dave, My husband has his own oneman painting business, and I help him with the books. We were wondering how you know when it’s time to implement a price increase.

Also, what should the increase be?

Lauren Dear Lauren, I grew up in the real estate business, so I’ll use the apartmentcomplex model as my example. If your building is completely full, then it’s time to raise prices a little bit until you have a vacancy. In this type of scenario, you want a healthy level of vacancy, meaning you’re always going to be losing some customers as you go up in prices.

In your husband’s case, if he’s booked through the end of the month, he’s way underpriced. Just keep on turning in your bids, and don’t make a big deal about things.

It isn’t like a tenant, in your case, where you’re going back time and time again except in rare cases.

You might start with a 10 percent increase, and see what happens for a while. If that goes well, wait a bit and raise them another 10 percent.

There are only so many hours in a day this guy can work, so the only other option is to take on staff. But before I start staffing, I’m going to raise prices and cut the number of customers that way. In most cases with the construction business, if you show up when you say you will, complete the job when you say you will, and you do high quality work, there’s almost no ceiling on what you can make!

‘Chicken Soup’ co-author to speak at Senior Star LeAnn Thieman will focus on solutions to help reduce the everyday challenges of stress and caregiver burnout

By Bugle Staff Realizing that caregiving requires tremendous emotional, physical and spiritual stamina, motivational speaker and author LeAnn Thieman is set to speak to the community on the issue.

Senior Star at Weber Place is inviting the public to a presentation by Thieman at its senior living campus, 605 S. Edward Drive in Romeoville, at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 8.

Thieman’s presentation will focus on solutions to help reduce the everyday challenges of stress and caregiver burnout.

She will offer remedies by encouraging professional and personal caregivers to care for themselves as devotedly as they

do for others with her simple CARE 4ME strategies.

“This presentation will offer valuable first-hand strategies to help reduce stress from an expert who can address questions with a keen understanding of the emotional toll on caregivers,” said Tom Johnsrud, executive director of Senior Star at Weber Place. “Talking with an empathic and knowledgeable professional like LeAnn brings an added level of support beyond Internet research.”

By sharing stories from “Chicken Soup for the Caregiver’s Soul” and her adventures of rescuing orphaned infants at the end of the Vietnam War, Thieman captivates her audiences by helping renew the hope, health,

courage and strength of caregivers while honoring them for being heroes.

A nurse for 30 years, Thieman is a nationally recognized professional speaker and writer.

After co-authoring “Chicken Soup for the Nurse’s Soul,” she eventually went on to co-write

11 other books in the popular Chicken Soup series.

She has been featured on CNN, FOX-TV, BBC, NPR, PBS and in Newsweek, among other radio and TV programs.

In 2008, Thieman was inducted into the Speaker Hall of Fame, joining the company of Ronald

Reagan, Colin Powell and Art Linkletter.
