Village reviews comprehensive plan Village focuses on diversifying employment opportunities, and providing for services

In an effort to continue balanced growth, infrastructure and maintain an eye for directed development with the village’s goals intact, Romeoville leaders are in the process of reviewing its Comprehensive Plan for its future.

The village’s existing Comprehensive Plan was adopted in 2001.

According to minutes from the planning and zoning committee,

the updated Comprehensive Plan builds off the 2001 plan and provides a statement of policy for land use, transportation, infrastructure and development decisions.

The proposed Comprehensive Plan also evaluates and plans for the East Side area in anticipation of the coming Metra Station, which the village just broke ground on along New Avenue.

Key planning themes, according to Teska, revolve around advancing a balanced economic base; ensuring market-supportive strategies;

amine continued plans for Uptown Square, and the Weber Road corridor seen as a village lifestyle center, employment center and commercial/entertainment center.

The plan indicates that Romeoville’s legacy as an industrial town has provided a strong local economy and significant job growth.

The industrial base will remain a dominant part of the village’s economy.

However, diversifying employment opportunities, and providing for services, commercial, and entertainment uses that cater to needs of residents is necessary to create a more complete and sustainable

community.

To ensure market-supportive strategies, the plan suggests encouraging development by introducing a broad range of uses to the community.

A diversity of uses could support directly or indirectly the fiscal health of the village through additional tax revenue, new services, and supportive uses that make existing business more successful and enhance the stability of neighborhoods.

The report indicates that fiscal sustainability is dependent on the ability of the village to withstand significant changes in economic trends, such as the rapid changes in retailing, loss of taxes, or decline of significant business sectors, such as manufacturing.

Transportation planning would take a multimodal approach to ensure all modes are properly integrated into the design of the built environment, providing for safe and convenient routes for all travelers and connectivity between neighborhoods, shops, services, parks, open space, and other community amenities.

Key to the plan would be diversifying its housing stock. Teska believes expanding housing options will ensure residents can age in place by finding suitable housing types that meet their changing needs over time without having to leave Romeoville.

To meet this end, it is suggested that the village should promote housing policies that support the distribution of diverse housing types at varying price points.

Planning and zoning members questioned how to handle challenges faced by a changing demographic in attracting restaurants to the area.

Teska Associates stated that Romeoville has a strong population base with good density but faces some global challenges, with retail areas nearby such as The Promenade in Bolingbrook and the retail area in Joliet.

However, in keeping with the Comprehensive Plan, Romeoville stands to be successful in creating high quality jobs with good pay while additional housing could drive the expansion of restaurants to the area.

More than 100 immigrants are on their way to becoming citizens thanks in part to classes begun by the Southwest Suburban Immigrant Project in partnership with local libraries.

After a 12-week course on citizenship preparation, more than 100 local legal permanent residents were recognized at the White Oak Library Romeoville Branch for successfully completing one of three courses offered by the Southwest Suburban Immigrant Project (SSIP) in partnership with three libraries, Fountaindale Public Library, Woodridge Public Library, and White Oak Library Crest Hill Branch.

“We want to make sure our completing students know SSIP is committed to every step of their naturalization process, and we’ll be there for them as well when they register to vote, helping them to become fully engaged citizens,” says SSIP’s Director of Organizing Eliza-

beth Cervantes.

For some, admittedly it was the opportunity to jump start the process and begin what many feel can be a daunting task.

Organizers say the classes offer guidance for those that sorely need it and the goal is to help as many people as possible, noting today’s political climate, has created a sense of urgency and in some cases fear.

Members of the SSIP and library staff who serve as volunteer mentors hope to ease the process and the fear through education.

“We think it is important to serve our patrons and assist them with programs such as these courses that will open new paths for them,” said Crest Hill Branch Manager Amy Byrne.

The next step for many of the completing students is to apply for naturalization, which they will be able to do with the guidance of SSIP and partner suburban agencies.

Currently, the naturalization process takes anywhere from five to eight months. During this time,

an applicant should prepare with knowledge of the U.S. Constitution, civics, and English skills. But, not many organizations offer this resource outside the city of Chicago, and is why SSIP said it was necessary and a pivotal act to be serving this immigrant population in their process of becoming naturalized

U.S. citizens.

A second opportunity for the courses will be offered in the fall at the White Oak Library Crest Hill Branch. For further information, call 630- 296-6755.

Grant helps fund new STEAM projects Lowe’s Toolbox for Education grants $5k to Oak View Elementary When Oak View welcomes students back in August, the Bolingbrook elementary school will have a new STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) MakerSpace courtesy of Lowe’s Toolbox for Education grant.

In general, MakerSpaces inspire students to become participatory learners to uncover their talents and interests by making, producing, solving, creating, collaborating and thinking.

High tech activities will include Ozobots, Sphero, Dot and Dash, Osmo, Littlebits, and other computerized tools.

Oak View Library Media Center Director Sharon Peterson also hopes to purchase a 3D printer.

“We are thrilled that Lowe’s gave us a huge jumpstart. Part of the $5,000 grant will fund the furniture for storage and the work space we will need, and the remaining funds will help us to purchase some of the more costly high tech tools,” Peterson said. “We will working all summer to get everything ordered, installed and ready to start our new school year.”

Experts weigh in on Affordable Care Act Town hall meeting hosted by Democratic Congressman Bill Foster, D-Naperville, last week at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center

The future of the Affordable Care Act and health care loomed over a town hall meeting hosted by Democratic Congressman Bill Foster, D-Naperville, last week at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center.

Talk of the potential repeal of the ACA, also known as Obamacare, brought in a number of people to discuss concerns and raise questions.

“The decision by the Senate republicans to delay their vote is a direct response to the things constituents have expressed with what’s about to happen to their health care if the senate bill passes,” Foster said.

Typically, the process of passing a health care bill requires lawmakers to formulate a proposal in the House and another version in the Senate.

They will be merged together, and there will be a vote in both the House and Senate in an effort to agree on a compromise.

Foster stressed that unfortunately, neither proposal is acceptable to millions of Americans.

The forum featured discussion by a number of experts from health care professions, including Dr. Kathleen Burke, director of Substance Abuse Initiatives of Will County; A.J. Wilhelmi, president and CEO of the Illinois Hospital As-

sociation; Courtney Hedderman, associate state director of advocacy and outreach for AARP; and Perry Maier, executive director of Open Door Health Center Illinois.

Also speaking on the panel was Joliet resident Clarice Hearne who shared her story. The 11th district constituent has dealt with depression and cancer.

Hearne said she struggled to find adequate coverage earlier in her life while working as an adjunct professor, for nonprofits, and in administrative positions, and it wasn’t until later when she acquired a full-time job at the University of St. Francis that she attained the healthcare insurance she needed.

When the ACA was passed shortly thereafter, Hearn recalls hearing gratitude expressed by several of her colleagues.

Hearne retired from her fulltime job in 2015 and switched over to Medicare to meet her health care needs. Around that time, she was diagnosed with cancer for the second time.

Hearne said she felt lucky to get the coverage she qualified for based on being over age 65.

“Because of Medicare, I only had to pay about 5 percent,” she said.

“Medicare coverage about 95 percent.”

Hearne said she knows there are people who are just as needy who may not qualify for Medicare the way she does and questioned if the

system seems fair.

“I sincerely believe that adequate health care is a human right, not a commodity to be sold on the market place,” she said.

Several attendees and panelists questioned the agenda of Republicans in Congress, argued the bill would increase costs to patients and discussed the need for im-

proved veterans heath care.

Foster wanted to thank the public for their willingness to attend the town hall meeting and said their input is critical.

“That is why it’s so important that people have come out and engaged them in discussions, like we’re having today, and to make sure that congress understands the

implications of what they’re voting on,” Foster said. “Because it’s easy to sit in Washington and just say, ‘OK, they’re arguing about a budget numbers, and we’re going to cut this by some billions of dollars.”

Foster voted against the repeal bill in May, at which point the measured passed in a vote by the House.

Districts partner to connect DuPage River trail between two counties The Forest Preserve Districts of DuPage and Will County are partnering to connect Greene Valley Forest Preserve in DuPage County to Whalon Lake in Will County to create a critical connection to the planned 40-mile DuPage River Regional Trail system. The trail extension is slated to open in 2018.

The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County Board of Commissioners approved an intergovernmental agreement between the two agencies to provide for construction of a portion of the DuPage River Regional Trail within Greene Valley Forest Preserve.

The District operates a trail system at Greene Valley, and the Will County Forest Preserve District operates a trail system at Whalon Lake, which is about one mile south of Greene Valley.

The Forest Preserve District of Will County Forest Preserve District contacted the District with a plan to build the 1.25-mile trail

link with Elmhurst-Chicago Stone Company, which owns a quarry adjacent to Whalon Lake. The bi-county trail segment will extend from Whalon Lake to Greene Valley along Royce and Greene roads at no cost to the District.

The District will maintain the 10-foot-wide crushed limestone trail within Greene Valley once it’s completed.

The District has been working with various DuPage County agencies to develop the East Branch DuPage River Greenway Trail, a 31-mile bikeway that follows the East Branch DuPage River from Bloomingdale to

Woodridge. Once the trail passes into Will County, it becomes the DuPage River Trail and follows the DuPage River through Naperville.

The trail will eventually connect to Channahon and the I&M Canal State Trail.

“Residents of DuPage and Will County will greatly benefit from this trail link that will connect hikers and bikers to thousands of acres of open space and the extensive trail systems in both counties along the East Branch DuPage River and the DuPage River,” said Forest Preserve District of DuPage County President Joe Cantore.

“It’s wonderful to see the col-

laborative efforts of two agencies produce benefits for the entire region,” said Forest Preserve District Commissioner Linda Painter, District 3.

Our Brains and (Dis)organization Language is important in considering whole person, not defining by their limitations I belong to a terrific organization called the Institute for Challenging Disorganization (ICD), whose conferences and classes have taught me a great deal about how our brains work, especially when it comes to organization (and disorganization). This month I’m sharing a brief overview of what I’ve learned about several brain-based issues that may offer insight on why you may find getting and staying organized more difficult than you think it should be. I’ve indicated the presenter whose wisdom I’m sharing.

You’ll notice I use “people first” language – e.g., rather than referring to someone as a hoarder, I refer to someone who hoards. This language is an important way of considering the whole person, rather than just defining him or her by their limitations.

ADHD Our brains are a rain forest of diversity: differences among brains are as enriching—and essential—as differences among plants and animals. People with ADHD are hunters in a farmer’s world – they pay attention to distractions to facilitate survival in the wild. Instead of celebrating the natural diversity inherent in human brains, too often we diagnose and medicate those differences. Rather

By Sue Becker than focusing on the limitations of people with ADHD, think of everyone in the world as being one of hundreds of varieties of flowers that make for a beautiful field of flowers. If you have to function in an environment that isn’t well-suited to the way your brain thinks, make positive environmental modifications that will help you be more successful. (Dr. Thomas Armstrong of The American Institute for Learning and Human Development) HOARDING The daughter of a woman with hoarding disorder talked about how, when someone in the home hoards, hoarding defines the family culture. Objects, rather than family members, become the focus of the person who hoards.

People who hoard are stimulated by an object’s smallest detail, which triggers creativity and generates unessential goals (e.g., “these margarine tubs will come in handy when I work on my craft projects”). These goals support the object’s value and override what one might otherwise view as reasonable decisions about letting go of the objects. People who hoard tend to procrastinate about

the projects they intend to undertake with those objects because of perfectionism (it’s better not to do anything than do it imperfectly) and doubt (it’s too uncomfortable to make a bad decision about what to let go of so I’ll keep all of it). This procrastination leads to the hoard getting larger – in essence the home is filled with intentions. The potential of the children often gets buried in hoarded homes. There is an online support community for children of hoarders: ChildrenOfHoarders.com. (Dr. Suzanne Chabaud of the OCD Institute of Greater New Orleans) STRESS Chronic stress actually shrinks the brain and is the number one killer in America. Stress has more to do with a person’s genetic “code” than with his or her circumstances. It is possible to change your brain’s propensity to be stressed by shifting the brain’s autopilot from stressed and anxious to peaceful. You can train your mind to change your brain to generate more joy in your work, more order in your life, more love in your relationships and more spring in your step. Attitude is the thing that makes you most powerful psychologically. Reducing stress is not about a to-do list, it’s more about the to-be list. The here and now is the one place where we don’t have stress – it’s thinking about the past and the future that causes stress. However, 85 percent of what we worry about ain’t gonna happen – breathe in, breathe out and move on. Every season, the Voyager Media area has several amazing athletes in many sports, but only a select few can compete at a high level in multiple sports – of those, Voyager Media selects one male and one female from each of its five zones as nominees for the Voyager Media Multisport Athlete of the Year.

Of the five males and five females – one of each are the selected as the winners of the AOY title.

This year’s overall winners are: FEMALE: BROOKLYN BACHMANN - JOLIET/ SENTINEL ZONE Three-sport superstar from Minooka, Bachmann wins her second-straight Athlete of the Year honor.

This season, she averaged an area-best 20.9 points per game, along with 3.5 rebounds on the

basketball court. She ended her career as the all-time leader in points in school history with 1,523.

A Voyager Media All-Area team member, she was named to the All-Southwest Prairie Conference team and was Class 3A/4A IBCA all-state honorable mention. She will continue her basketball career at Bemidji State University in Minnesota.

On the volleyball court, the senior setter led the Indians with 993 assists, 180 digs and 26 aces to go with 43 blocks for the Indians.

She helped Minooka reach the state finals, where it battled for a title and fell in the three sets to the nation’s No. 1 team in the Class 4A state finals.

“Brooklyn was a fierce leader on the court and we will very much miss her,” said Minooka volleyball coach Carrie Prosek.

Lewis to add women’s bowling, lacrosse Lewis University Director of Athletics Dr. John Planek announced on July 10 the addition of women’s bowling and women’s lacrosse to the NCAA Divi-

sion II offerings of the Flyer Athletics Department, beginning in 2018-19.

The addition of these two teams increases Lewis’ scholar-

ship sport offerings from 20 to 22.

Since 1980, Lewis has competed as one of 15 current member institutions of the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

“We are very excited to announce the addition of these sports,” Planek said. “Women’s lacrosse is played in nearly 70 high schools in Illinois and we would be one of the few institutions offering scholarships.

“It is one of the fastest growing sports in the country and particularly in the Midwest.”

“Women’s bowling has also become a popular sport in Illinois,” Planek continued. “According to the Illinois High School Association website, there are 238 girls bowling teams and adding this to our portfolio increases opportunities for women to compete at the next level.”

Lewis Senior Vice President for Enrollment Management, Marketing and Planning Ray Kennelly was equally as excited about the new Flyer sport additions.

“With the addition of these

two new sports, we not only can increase our enrollment, but we will be able to recruit in markets that have traditionally been outside of our primary territories,” Kennelly said. “We feel it will enhance student life on campus as well as provide additional opportunities for intercollegiate athletic competition.”

A coaching search for both teams will begin immediately.

Lewis also announced that men’s bowling will be instituted as a club sport beginning in 2018-19 to add to the growing portfolio of 23 club sport opportunities.

• On July 6, the Women’s Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) announced their list of AllAmerican Scholars which included five members of the Lewis University women’s golf team.

Senior Melissa VanSistine (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic) made the list for the third time in her career.

Senior Amy Swanson (Somonauk, Ill./Somonauk), junior Katie Wortman (Minneapolis, Minn./St. Anthony Village),

and sophomore Madison Hill (Pekin, Ill./Pekin Community) all earned the honor for the second time.

Making the list for the first time was junior Hannah Schultz (North Prairie, Wis./Mukwonago).

In order to qualify for the AllAmerican Scholar Team golfers are required to have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50.

VanSistine finished with a 3.71, Swanson with 3.63, Wortman finished with 3.59, Hill had a 3.56, and Schultz finished with a 3.52.

MALE: BRADY MILLER – PLAINFIELD ZONE The Plainfield North junior had a stellar season for the Tigers in three sports.

On the football field, Miller quarterbacked the Tigers to the IHSA Class 7A state final game – ultimately placing second.

On the season he completed 151-of-259 passes for 1,998 yards and 21 touchdowns. He also rushed 39 times for 279 yards and a pair of scores.

During the winter, Miller was one of the veterans leading the North basketball team.

Then, in the spring, he again set his sights on a state run again with the North baseball team.

Miller pitched the final game of the season for the Tigers – a loss to Neuqua Valley in the Class 4A sectional final.

On the season on the mound, Miller had a team-high 60 innings pitched with a 4-3 record and a 1.40 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, while posting 68 strikeouts. He was an All-SPC¬ selection.

At the plate, he hit .333 with a .393 on base percentage and a .547 slugging percentage. He has 39 hits with six home runs, with 36 RBI and scored 25 runs.

Miller was a Voyager Media AllArea selection in both football and baseball.

McNair was a member of the 2017 Voyager Media Shootout Senior All-Star basketball game as one of the top senior players in the area.

In football, the All-Area team member played a Jabrill Peppers role for the Steelmen.

He led team in rushing with 407 yards on 44 carries and four touchdowns and receiving with 47 catches, 407 yards and 3TDs. As a defensive back, he tallied 22 tackles and two interceptions, taking one back for a touchdown.

Of 15 kickoff returns, McNair tallied 339 yards (22.6 average), including a 100-yards touchdown.

In baseball, the outfielder and pitcher batted .438 with a .500 on base percentage racking up 39 hits, nine RBI, 26 runs scored and stole 29 bases while being caught only once.

PLAINFIELD ZONE FEMALE: LOTA ONUA It is Onua’s second-straight season as the Plainfield nominee for the AOY. This season, she led a Plainfield East basketball team that posted the best record in school history and advanced to the sectional final – eventually falling to Benet Academy.

The senior averaged 11.25 points and 6.44 rebounds per game.

She was a member of the Voyager Media All-Area first team and a member of the Prep Shootout and was named to the SPC All-Conference team as well as all-tournament at the Nazareth Holiday Tournament and DeKalb MLK Tournament. She was Class 3A/4A IBCA honorable mention all-state.

“Lota is the embodiment of a competitor,” East coach Tony Waznonis said. “She was a key part in helping lead us to the success we had this year, not just as an athlete, but also as a leader.”

VALLEY VIEW ZONE FEMALE: NIA FOWLKES The Bolingbrook junior patrolled the outfield for the Raider softball team in the spring and was a defensive specialist for the volleyball team in the fall.

One of the few underclassmen on this year’s list, Fowlkes will be back at it again next season.

MALE: MALIK BINNS While Binns will focus on baseball in college, in his final season as a basketball player, he helped the Raiders placed third in the state averaging 13.4 points and a team-best 7.1 points per game.

He a Voyager Media All-Area first teamer and was selected to the IBCA Class 3A/4A special mention team.

In baseball this season, he hit .390 on the season with 17 RBI. He had a pair of home runs and stole 10 bases.

“He is excellent in both sports,” Bolingbrook baseball coach Scott Thyer said. “But, as a kid, you fall in love with a sport and his first love was baseball. It is refreshing to have a player not let outside influences impact his decision.

Whatever decision he made, he was going to have my full support and coach (Rob) Brost’s full support.”

NILES ZONE FEMALE: BIANCA TOMUTA The Niles West senior was a member of the Voyager Media All-Area volleyball team.

She tallied 414 digs and 34 aces for the Wolves team that advanced to the Class 4A state finals, placing fourth.

“Bianca is a senior libero and leads our team in digs,” volleyball coach Stacy Metoyer said.

“Her serving has been the best on the team in the playoffs and she had some key digs for us in close matches.”

In the spring, Tomuta posted a team-best 12 goals and three assists, tallying 27 points in 17

games for the Wolves.

MALE: JOHNNY PABST A three-sport athlete for Niles West, Pabst excelled in football making the Voyager Media AllArea team.

The Wolves quarterback passed for 2,582 yards passing on the season, throwing for 22 touchdowns. On the ground, he carried the ball 127 times for 844 yards and eight more scores.

In the spring, Pabst was a pitcher and infielder for the baseball team and in the winter he was a leader for the basketball team.

“He was a team captain and was 100 percent our leader,” said basketball coach Bob Williams.

“He was the guy that could guard almost anyone. The best player on the other team was who he was going to take. His work ethic is second to none and he is a champion in every sense of the word. He is one of the best competitors I have ever been around.”

DOWNERS GROVE ZONE FEMALE: EMMA MORAVEC The argument can be made that a runner is a runner and just because someone runs distance races in cross country and track – they are not a multi-sport athlete.

But for Downers Grove North’s Emma Moravec, she is not running the distance races in both.

In track, the senior placed second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2 minutes, 15.08.

She also teamed with Gina Kowalewicz, Rachel Sprague and Kimberly Brent in the 4x400 relay to place fourth in 3:56.90.

In cross country, Moravec was the lone Trojan to qualify for the state finals this season , placing in the top half of the field in the 3.1 mile course at Detweiller Park in Peoria.

MALE: MARTY DOSEN The Benet two-sporter helped Benet come within striking distance of the state finals in two different sports.

In football, the running back posted a combined yardage of nearly 1,100 yards and 13 touchdowns. He rushed for more than 900 yards and 10 scores.

With his help, the Redwings fell in the Class 7A semifinals to eventual state champion East St. Louis.

In baseball, the Voyager Media All-Area Team member batted .358 and drove in 32 runners. He had five home runs and 14 extra base hits on the season as Benet fell in the sectional final.

On the court, she led the conference in both scoring (19.7 ppg) and scored in double-figures in 31 out of 32 games, including 15 games of 20+ points and three games of 30+ points.

The sophomore forward set a school-record with 18 baskets on 18-for-19 shooting to finish with 38 points against Maryville ( Jan. 14). The Waukesha, Wis., native also set a school-record with a field goal percentage of

65.2% (258-for-396), which was also the best in NCAA Division II. Kelliher has the best career field goal percentage (62.8%) of any active Division II player and the second-highest career scoring average (19.0 ppg.).

Following the season, Kelliher was selected as a Division II Bulletin Third Team All-American and Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA) and Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Honorable Mention All-American.

Lewis finished the 2016-17 campaign with a record of 23-9 and advanced to its fifth consecutive NCAA Tournament.

ST. FRANCIS • Two-time 2017 NAIA Outdoor Track & Field All-American Raven Kelly (Romeoville, Ill./ Romeoville) has been named

the NAIA Midwest Region Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), it was announced on Monday.

Last month, Kelly became the first Saint in any outdoor sport to claim an individual national championship when she won the hammer event with a throw of 61.33 meters (201 feet, 2.75 inches).

That performance came very close to the all-time NAIA outdoor record of 61.44 meters, falling just over four inches short.

Kelly also earned all-american recognition in the shot put, where she placed third in the nation.

The region honors for Kelly come on the heels of her garnering Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Women’s Outstanding Field Per-

former of the Meet distinction at the league’s outdoor championships.

At that meet, she won both the hammer and shot put events and placed third in the discus.

Kelly finished her career gaining all-american status six times (four outdoor, two indoor).

Moody claimed USTFCCCA Midwest Region Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year accolades last spring, the first year in which the award was presented.

Help kids get ready for fall sports season Safety, allowing time for healing and equipment maintenance is key

Tryouts tend to be physically demanding, so kids who have not lifted a finger all summer may be at risk of injury or missing the cut. Let kids ease back into regular exercise to make sure they are not starting from scratch come their first tryout.

Summer is a season of relaxation, especially for school-aged children who are not yet old enough to work. Such youngsters no doubt enjoy the chance to spend summer days lounging poolside or at the beach, all without a care in the world or any homework to complete. Though summer is synonymous with R&R, parents of young athletes who hope to compete in scholastic athletics when the school year begins in autumn may need to take steps to ensure their kids aren’t at risk of injury once the curtain comes up on fall sports season.

EXAMINE AND REPLACE EQUIPMENT IF NECESSARY The right equipment can protect kids from injury and help them realize their full athletic potential. But damaged or outdated equipment can increase kids’ risk of injury. Examine kids’ equipment long before fall sports season begins so you have time to bargain hunt should anything need to be replaced.

SCHEDULE A PHYSICAL FOR YOUR CHILD Many school districts mandate that athletes receive and pass physicals before they can compete. Speak with the athletic director at your child’s school to learn the guidelines that govern athletic physicals. The physical will need to be conducted by a predetermined date, but you may also need the physical to be conducted after a certain date for it to be considered valid. Speak with your

child’s physician if any problems are found during the physical.

LET KIDS HEAL Kids’ schedules are busier than ever before, and many youngsters play several sports during the school year. Summer vacation may be the only extended period all year that youngsters’ bodies get to heal. While it’s important that kids stay physically active throughout the summer, make sure they

I’m 24 years old and have a good credit score and a nice apartment, but my job depends largely on how the oil industry is doing. My dad filed bankruptcy nine years ago, and he’s already $150,000 in debt again, so he’s never been very responsible with money. I think this would spell big trouble for me, but I’m sure he

will be mad if I say no. What are your thoughts?

EMMANUEL DEAR EMMANUEL, Yeah, I think doing something like this would spell big trouble for you. If your dad is irresponsible with money — especially to the point of having to file bankruptcy — what makes you think he’ll make these house payments on time?

I know this would be an uncomfortable conversation to have with your dad, but you need to brace

yourself and just do it. Be respectful and explain exactly why you won’t

do this. Think about it, Emmanuel.

When he doesn’t pay the bill on time, it’s going to screw up your credit score. And when you get ready to buy a house, guess what?

You’re going to have trouble qualifying because you already own a house. Most people don’t make enough money to qualify to buy two homes.

Basically, your dad is asking you to not buy a house so they can have one. I can’t tell you how to make your dad okay with saying

no to this, but I can tell you that your answer should be no. Let him and your mom know that you love them both, but this is something you just can’t do.

Loss valued at $335. »» Officers were called to Walgreens, 1295 Lily Cache Lane, for the report of an aggravated robbery. Unknown subjects entered the store at 11:45 p.m., demanded money from the register, took cash and exited in a waiting vehicle.

arrested at 8:30 a.m.in the area of Romeo and Sunset for DUI, no insurance, one taillight and illegal transportation of alcohol.

MAY 13 »» Johnny Casper, 18, and Terion Piearson-Walker, 18, both of Plainfield, and Draton Ratcliff, 18, of Bolingbrook were arrested at 12:28 p.m. in the 400 block of South Weber for public fighting. »» Leonardo Martinez, 18, of Chicago, was arrested at 2:05 p.m. in the area of Romeo Road and Claire for failure to report an accident to police, improper lane usage, failure to yield, illegal transportation of alcohol, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to give information and failure to notify Secretary of State of address change.
