BHS student with rare form of cancer attends graduation ceremonies

Romeoville High School graduated 329 students at Sunday’s Commencement Ceremony.

Even as Valley View School District 365U honored more than 1,200 graduates during two high school commencement exercises Sunday, the district also celebrated the achievements of one particular individual, Bolingbrook High School’s Mathias Watson-Brown.

When he was 15, “Mickey” (as he is affectionately known) was diagnosed with a rare heart condition known as WPW Syndrome that required surgery and constant medication to manage the condition. Then, last summer, prior to starting his senior year at BHS, doctors discovered he had a rare form of brain cancer known as primitive neuroectodermal tumor.

Despite seven surgeries, radiation and chemotherapy, Mickey was able to join his 865 classmates at graduation.

Watson. “A special thank you goes to [BHS transition specialist] Starr Caldwell, his advocate for success through it all. Even though she was enduring tragedy herself and on leave of absence, she continued to fight for him.”

Caldwell said Mickey is “a sweet child.”

“It’s wonderful to work for a district that rallies behind a young

man like this,” she said.

Mickey’s family issued praise for “all the staff who had contact with him throughout his school days at Jonas Salk, Humphrey and BHS,” and gave particular thanks to VVSD Superintendent James Mitchem and BHS principal Yolanda Jordan.

“Mickey continues to be the strong fighter he has been since his premature birth,” said Watson.

District starts major construction projects District 365U is taking on a multitude of major projects this summer By laura katauskas staff reporter

School is out and summer construction throughout the school district is set to begin.

Valley View School District 365U is taking on a multitude of major projects this summer intended to maintain the safety of its 21 schools.

“We have a number of goodsize projects required this year due to aging infrastructure,” Director of Facilities and Operations Mike Lopez said. “We have an intense schedule with 10 weeks to get the job done. In some cases, students are literally leaving out the front door for summer and we’re coming in the back door.”

Roof replacement, at a cost of more than $5 million, will be

completed at five schools, including B. J. Ward, Jamie McGee and Irene King elementary schools, and Humphrey and Jane Addams middle schools. The roofs at each of these schools are more than 20 years old and are starting to show wear and tear such as leaking, according to the district.

Lopez said the replacement was inevitable and required. Three different roofing companies, all previously used by the district, will be performing the construction.

Materials being used for each roof has a life expectancy of 25 years.

Initially, the district discussed using solar panels on the roof.

However, that portion of the project is on hold due to cost and until the district has had time to review the proposal further, Lopez added.

In addition, the district will spend

$3.5 million renovating Brooks Middle School’s mechanical system – a long-term need for the school, according to Lopez. Renovations began last year with the replacement of a chiller. This year, additional equipment, including the boiler, air-handling units and ductwork, will be replaced.

“The purpose of the replacement is to achieve better temperature control and comfort in heating and cooling in the classroom,” Lopez said.

The only school without a playground, J. R. Tibbott Elementary School, will not only have a new play space, but a new parking lot configuration to better facilitate traffic flow. The existing parking lot was in need of resurfacing, which gave way for the opportunity to reconfigure the space.

At Tibbott, the parent drop-off section and bus drop-off section will now be separated. Phase one of the project, to be completed this year,

State lawmakers schedule town meeting on legislative issues State senators Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant, D-Shorewood, and Pat McGuire, D-Joliet, and representatives Natalie Manley, D-Joliet, and Emily McAsey, D-Lockport, will be holding a town hall meeting to discuss legislative issues on Thursday, June 16.

The meeting will be held at the Fountaindale Library, 300 W. Briarcliff Road, Bolingbrook, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

“I think it is important to speak with constituents directly and answer their questions,” BertinoTarrant said. “There are a lot of questions and people want answers.”

“This has been a brutal legislative session for everyone,” McGuire said.

“Yet work continues on important local projects. I look forward to discussing that and more.”

The town hall meeting is open to the public. Anyone with questions or concerns can join senators Bertino-Tarrant and McGuire and representatives Manley and McAsey for a candid conversation about state and local government issues.

“Town hall meetings are a great

way to involve local residents in the legislative process and keep them informed about the latest developments in Springfield,” McAsey said. “It’s critical that lawmakers stay connected to the constituents they represent and hear from as many people as possible about their ideas and concerns.”

Because the parking lots at Romeoville High School also have been deteriorating, new pavement will be placed and reconfigured.

Again, both the bus traffic and parent drop-off will be separated.

According to Lopez, there will be a dedicated loop for drop-off at one end of the parking lot and a separate place for student parking, eliminating the crisscrossing of lanes that occurs now. Currently at the west end, there is one large loop that circles the whole parking lot. Essentially, one loop will be

confined to one third of the south end, with the remaining two thirds of the north end dedicated to student parking.

Lopez also noted that in the construction of the parking lots, the district is aiming to incorporate green materials such as permeable pavers.

The district also will make landscaping improvements at the entrance to RHS at Route 53 and Taylor Roads. The school district is working with the village because the area is considered one of the main entrances into the village.

“We have a slew of projects this year but we have been planning for it well in advance and now the budget has allowed us to complete,” said Lopez.

Water quality report now available In an effort to be more environmentally responsible, the village of Romeoville is no longer printing and mailing its annual water quality report.

A full copy of the report is available online at www.romeoville. org, however. Residents can use the report to check how Romeoville’s water quality compares with established federal and state drinking water standards.

appeal to nature-loving shutterbugs who love to explore the preserves in search of just the right shot.

The contest’s new name, Preserve the Moment, encourages participants to enjoy some time in nature then preserve it for posterity.

Unlike past contests that ran June 1 through Oct. 31, Preserve the Moment will run two months longer and end Dec. 31. Submitted photos must be taken by amateur photographers in Forest Preserve District of Will County locations during the time period specified.

The biggest change in the photo contest is the way the photos will be judged. Instead of submitting photos by one final deadline, participants should upload their entries monthly. Each month, from June to December, a panel of judges will select its favorite photo from among those submitted. These photos will then be entered into the final judging. Each contestant

is limited to five contest entries per month. June submissions are being accepted now. Directions on how to submit photos and a complete list of rules is posted at ReconnectWithNature.org.

After the contest ends on Dec. 31, photos selected as the best for each month will be posted for online judging by members of the public.

The first place winner will receive a wireless HP color printer, the second place winner will receive a messenger-style bag with a padded laptop sleeve, and the third place winner will receive a fleece blanket.

Each participant will receive a gift for entering the contest, and the photo submissions will be shared online on the district’s website and Flickr pages and may be used in other district marketing efforts.

Participants should upload their best photos monthly to be in the running for final contest judging and prizes.

“It is incredible how far we’ve come in five years. It wasn’t easy and it wasn’t always smooth. But the commitment of our educators and leaders to positively impact our learners is second to none,” VVSD Assistant Superintendent Rachel Kinder told the group. “With all of our growth, we still have a long way to go and that is why we continue to push to take it to the next level.”

Sessions focused on the SMART School Improvement Learning Cycle developed by Fitchburg, Wisconsin-based SMART Learning Systems whose mission is to “build capacity for student-centered, goaloriented learning” that results in “all

students achieving their goals.”

“The power of the system relies on the power of the team,” said VVSD Executive Director for Educational Services (6-12) Karen Flories, who along with incoming Executive Director for Educational Services (Pre K-5) Adam Hurder, is a SMARTcertified trainer. “We want to show you the power you have not only as an individual, but also together.”

“There is a need to truly understand how everything each one of us does connects to the bigger picture of supporting our students,” Kinder said. “Because we are a unit district, we have an opportunity to truly be a school system, not just a system of schools.”

Both Kinder and Flories challenged the Leadership Academy attendees to work together to closely examine where the district has been, where it is today and where it needs to be tomorrow.

“When we work together, we can create something very powerful,” Flories said.

“If we continue to work smarter and approach everything in a strategic manner, we will maximize and capitalize on our strengths and affect targeted areas for improvement,” Kinder added. “Your leadership and commitment to this work will take us to the next level.”

Summer Leadership Academy meetings will conclude next week.

Although my most productive and successful days are those on which I follow this advice, I sometimes (OK, often) find myself doing easy, fun or less important stuff before I get around to working on the things I “should” be working on. That approach can be fine occasionally, especially on the weekend when I want to spend more time playing than working. However, on “work” days, it can be a dangerous habit that can lead to missed deadlines and missed opportunities.

Although the scoreboard at the end of the game showed a 13-3 loss to Downers Grove South, people just looking at the final score would have no idea how close Bolingbrook kept the Plainfield East Sectional title game.

The No. 1 seed Mustangs took a fast 2-0 lead in the first inning, which was interrupted by a 20-minute rain delay.

The Raiders, however, took a 3-2 lead against DGS pitcher Caroline Hedgcock, the 2016 Illinois Gatorade Softball Player of the Year and went into the fifth inning tied at 3-3.

Four home runs over the last few innings, one by Hedgcock, her 22nd on the season, and a pair from Megan LoBianco, created the scoring gap.

“Downers Grove is a tough team, always has been, always will be,” said Bolingbrook coach Jean Ryan-Moak. “Before we got off the bus, I just told the ladies to relax and breathe. To get down, 2-0, I told the girls during the rain delay to just relax. We knew going down against them is something we didn’t want to do, but we came back and we fought. Going into the fifth inning tied 3-3 was what we wanted to do, but once their hitters got on a roll, it was hard to come back from that. I am proud of them for hanging with them for five innings.”

While the Raiders wanted to win – simply being in that game made school history. No Bolingbrook softball team had ever advanced to the sectional championship game.

And this season’s team entered the playoffs as the No. 10 seed in the sectional and left as one of the final 16 in Class 4A. “We did something that has never been done in Bolingbrook history and that was to make it to the sectional championship game,” Moak said. “I don’t think they realize it now because the sting is still too strong, but in a couple weeks when they realize what they really did accomplish – that is when they will hold their heads high. They have everything to be proud of. Sure, the score wasn’t what we wanted to leave on, but they accomplished a lot.”

To advance to the sectional final game, the Raiders defeated Oswego East 5-3 in the sectional semifinal.

It was the second time the teams had squared off, as Bolingbrook handed the Wolves a loss in their first and last game of the season.

After the opening win, the young Bolingbrook team had a rough patch, but Moak always knew if the team clicked at the right time, it could make some noise in the playoffs.

“Early on in the season I knew this was a special group of girls,” she said. “We only have two seniors, but even though we are young, we have a lot of returners.

in a very tough conference and that gets us ready for games like this.”

Many of the players on this season’s team were on the roster two years ago when Bolingbrook won the school’s first softball regional title, but this season, they were the key cogs in taking the winning one more step.

“We won a regional championship in 2014 and when we won it again this year I went

back and looked at pictures of that team and there were six players on this team that were freshmen on that team,” Moak said. “They were pulled up as freshmen and they didn’t really play, so to win it this year on the field meant so much more to them.”

One of the players that had a key role on both teams was junior catcher Nicole Bond.

“This year’s group just really

came together,” she said. “We have great chemistry on this team. There is no separation between the older girls and the younger girls. We have two freshmen who play up and play great.”

Bond know the meaning of playing in the sectional championship.

“This is so special,” she said.

“Especially as the catcher because I am out there calling the pitches and

its stressful and it is so rewarding to win and get farther than anyone has.”

Bond’s battery mate, Lorrin Pondo, was also a vital part of the regional title team in 2014.

“We knew we weren’t a bad team,” she said. “We played really tough competition. The girls have all put all the effort forth for this.

We really wanted to win and get this far.”

I usually work part time during the semesters, but right now I’m working full time. I have about $2,000 in mutual funds, and I was wondering if I should add my fulltime work income to that or save it all to help pay for school.

with your investment, but right now I want you to invest in you. I want you to make sure, first and foremost, that you graduate college debt free.

So, if I’m in your shoes, I’m piling up the cash to pay for school.

You’re in a season of your life where things are more hectic than you probably ever dreamed they could be. My advice is to keep that money liquid. Keep it available and on hand, and don’t tie it up in mutual funds at the moment. You’ll

have plenty of time to continue investing once you graduate.

It’s best for you to concentrate on finishing school, then landing a job and finding a place to live after college. Even if you end up living in the same place for a while, starting life in the real world takes money, so let’s make sure you can make that happen. In other words, Chandler, as long as you do something with your education and that education is in an area that’s useable, you are a better investment than mutual funds right now!
