Thousands are expected to turn out for a festival celebrating and uniting area Filipino American communities in Bolingbrook this weekend.

Piyesta Pinoy returns for its fourth annual extravaganza featuring 11 hours of entertainment, food, music, arts and crafts, vendors, kids activities and more.

According to organizers, Piyesta Pinoy aims to provide a special forum for artists, vendors and performers to share their crafts, works and talents in promoting the Filipino American arts, music, cuisine and cultural heritage.

The sense of community hopes to unite the Filipino American communities in and around the greater Chicago area fostering collaboration amongst different groups, organizations, clubs, businesses and individuals.

The festival was originally held at Navy Pier but only allowed for

about 1,000 people. Hoping to extend the event to the suburbs, organizers said when Bolingbrook officials offered the space, the venue was the perfect place. By it’s second year, festival population nearly doubled. Last year, close to 8,000 people were in attendance.

The free event is presented by the Philippine American Cultural Foundation and the village of Bolingbrook and kicks off with a 5K Run/Walk at 9 a.m. June 10; the festival opens at 11 a.m. with a parade of costumes at 11:30 a.m. and continues throughout the day and evening until 10 p.m.

The festival will feature cultural music and dances on the main stage of the Bolingbrook Performing Arts Center, 375 Briarcliff Road, including a variety of performances. Food cooking demonstrations, cultural workshops, relays and games will all be part of the festivities.

out the season. The Rockin’ the Ville free concert series kicks off tonight from 7 to 9 p.m., June 8, at Deer Crossing Park (1050 W. Romeo Road, featuring Wedding Banned.

Pop, water, adult beverages, and snacks will be available for pur-

chase. All park rules apply to concerts; no pets allowed. A variety of band including Billy Croft and the 5 Alarm (June 22) Neverly Brothers (July 6), the Anthem, (July 20) and the Student Body (Aug. 17); and a special Sunday Symphony, from

4 to 6 p.m. June 26 with the Del Bergeson Orchestra.

In addition, kick off the summer this weekend from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Volunteer Park, 1100 Murphy Drive at the Backyard BBQ! Join the Romeoville Recreation Depart-

ment and Lockport Township Park District at their annual cooperative event. Children can participate in various backyard games against friends. Activities include a D.J., face painting, craft, inflatables and more. Free hot dog, chips and drink for the first 250 people thanks to Hampton Park Social Athletic Club.

Come out for a Movie Under the Stars at Deer Crossing Park, where movie-themed activities will be offered at 8 p.m. with the movie starting at dusk. Check out Lego Batman, June 14 and Zootopia, July 14.

Romeoville develops open space for park play

BY BUGLE STAFF Residents will soon be able to enjoy a variety of sports at one of the largest parks in the community. Officials broke ground to kick off the construction of Discovery Park; the new 25-acre park site will include athletic fields, sand volleyball courts, half-court basketball courts, and a bean bag toss area.

Combined with the Joliet Junior College open space, a 7.5-acre project of its own on 135th Street near Weber Road, Romeoville will be adding over 30 acres of developable park and recreation space.

“With these two park projects, we will have ample field space for the growing youth sports in our area,” said Mayor John Noak.

“This provides for a 50 percent increase in the number of sports fields in Romeoville,” Noak added.

Take the summer reading challenge at White Oak

Children and adults alike are gearing up for a summer challenge, with hundreds coming out to celebrate the start of “Read by Design: Read Big!” The White Oak Library District Romeoville Branch welcomed patrons to its Summer Reading program with quite a challenge for the kid set--make your own car for a drive-in movie. Using loads of cardboard, craft supplies and their own creativity patrons built their own and settled in to watch Mater’s Tall Tales.

Banking on the Read by Design theme, patrons will be drawing houses and cars to fill the library’s special “town” in the Children’s Department.

This unique town will be growing all summer and everyone is encouraged to add their special touches.

An inclusive city moving closer to reality

BY DANIEL SMROKOWSKI BUGLE COLUMNIST | COLUMN: SPECIAL VOICES I was recently at the Village Hall in Clarendon Hills co-hosting an On The Table event with my friend Diane Compton, of Westmont. The event was an “Inclusive City” discussion with approximately 25 people both with and without disabilities. The Chicago Community Trust, a foundation that for the past 3-years has sponsored civic discussion groups, backed our particular On The Table program; bringing people together to discuss important events and issues in a fun way. Special Olympics also got involved in this On The Table program because it is celebrating Special Olympics’ 50th anniversary next year.

Diane and I were grateful for the opportunity to lead this On The Table discussion. This town hall-style meeting gave those of us in the disability community a place to talk about the need for inclusion in our towns, schools, jobs, and in the media.

Inclusion in our community means exposure for everyone to people with special needs.

“The fact that, whether you’re a regular education or special education teacher, the more you’re exposed to children with special needs you’re

going to become more equipped and confident in your interaction with kids regardless of your certificate,” said Amy McCurry, of Clarendon Hills, and mother to Abbey, a middle school student diagnosed with Down syndrome.

“If Inclusion is successful, they [regular education teachers] are with those kiddos [individuals with special needs] as much as special education teachers.”

Abbey is always told by her mother to not talk solely to her special education teacher or her aide because her mother wants Abbey to talk to all the various teachers during the day.

This example of my friend Abbey’s inclusive education illustrates how those without disabilities can learn how to have a conversation with someone who has special needs. There might still exist people in our community who think that a person with special needs should not be included in regular education classrooms.

Teachers, other professionals, and all residents of our towns must come together to support inclusion of those of us with disabilities, thus creating an inclusive city. In our schools and jobs and also in the media, whether in film, television, radio, or podcast, those of us with disabilities are often not seen, and if we are, we are not always portrayed in a positive light.

By Daniel Smrokowski Gradually, however, the inclusion of those of us with disabilities is beginning to change for the better. The general public is beginning to see the joy and the whole gamut of human experience on the faces of those who are diagnosed with disabilities.

The Emmy award-winning docuseries, “Born This Way,” is becoming an incredibly powerful platform for advocacy. Beginning three weeks ago, “Born This Way” premiered its third season on the A&E television network, and is showing, through the power of stories, the inclusion of the disability community in our mainstream community.

This television show breaks new ground as being one of the first reality docuseries to feature people with intellectual disabilities. The show centers around seven young adults with Down syndrome as they follow their passions and lifelong dreams, explore friendships, romantic relationships, and work, all while defying society’s exSEE VOICES PAGE 13

Romeoville seniors leave a lasting impression on the program about how to be leaders

As the softball season approached at Romeoville High School, the Spartans were set to have a new coach as Christina Douglas had taken an administration position within the school.

However, the new coach needed a leave of absence, and Douglas stepped back in the fold to the joy of her five seniors – many of whom she had coached for four years or more.

“We all love her and a lot of us went to AVM and she was our coach there and we all bond really well and we all gel really well with her,” said senior Ally Zeigler.

Douglas, too, was happy to be back with her seniors – some of which were on varsity all four years.

“It was nice to come straight to varsity my freshman year because it was so much more competitive and it really pushed me.

Along with Zeigler, the Spartans featured Bailey Kavaliunas, Hannah Anderson, Taylor Davis and Miranda Brucki, who was a transfer from Morton before her junior season.

While Brucki joined the group later, she said she felt like part of the team right away.

“I am really happy that I came here,” she said. “They really taught me a lot and they built me up more and showed me my new potential with hitting and in the outfield and I am really glad I was a Spartan.”

“The teams are really competitive and we are always in every game, there was never a blow out,” Anderson said.

Douglas also believed Romeoville held its own, thanks in part to that senior group.

“Our goal at the beginning of the season was to compete in every game in our tough conference,” she said. “We had five seniors, so the leadership was something that was to our advantage and we saw it reflect.

The experience on the field weighed heavily on our opponent.”

It was one of those conference teams that ended the season for the Spartans – but like all season – in a close game.

Romeoville fell 2-1 to SPC foe Minooka in the semifinal of the Thornton Fractional South Regional.

So, although the group did not complete its goal of winning a regional title, the five seniors still have a legacy to leave on the program.

“I think the younger girls on our team and the girls at the lower levels all see that we bond as a team and we all get together and I want them to learn from us,” Kavaliunas said. “I want them to see that just because you are competitive, you can still have a good time and you can still have fun out here even though it is really serious.”

Flyers take home first-ever visionary award The Great Lakes Valley Conference announced May 23 that Lewis University has been chosen as the first recipient of the GLVC Dr. Joseph J. McGowan Visionary Award.

The Visionary Award is named after former Bellarmine University President Dr. Joseph J. McGowan who passed away in 2016. The award is presented to the GLVC institution that displays vision and exemplary programming to promote and advance the student-athlete experience.

Lewis was chosen for this award through its Spread Your Wings program.

Spread Your Wings is a community engagement initiative

for Lewis University Athletics, incorporating the five commitment areas (academic, athletic, career development, personal development and service) of the NCAA/CHAMPS Lifeskills program. The initiative includes a contest among all of the athletics programs where each team is measured based on its participation.

“Our student-athletes with assistance from our great staff continue to do an amazing job in the classroom, in competition, with their personal and career development and helping in the community,” Lewis Associate Director of Athletics and program coordinator Brian Sisson said. “Our student-athletes

realize they are leaders in this community and all of our programs take that to heart.

“It is truly an honor to be selected for this inaugural award.”

Behind the friendly competition between programs, is hours of hard work for every Lewis student-athlete. The academic year saw student-athletes attend athlete nutrition, alcohol awareness and graduate school seminars as well as campus speakers, campus plays, academic and technology educational labs and school music performances Some of the organizations Lewis teams worked with include: Morning Star Mission, Christmas Giving Tree, USA Volleyball, Anne Sullivan Grade

This marks the fifth-straight year that the Flyers have earned a runner-up finish.

Indianapolis (177 points) won the title for the sixth-straight year, followed by the Flyers (160) and their combined three con-

ference championships in men’s and women’s track and field.

“Athletic consistency has been a hallmark of our department and the GLVC is a tremendous benchmark for our programs,” Lewis Director of Athletics Dr. John Planek said. “Our fifth consecutive second place finish is a testament to the hard work of our players and coaches.”

The GLVC All-Sports Trophy is presented to the institution that demonstrates the best allaround performance in the league’s 21 sponsored sports.

Points are allocated based on overall finish in the league standings and finish in their respective conference tournaments.

Hops on 66 Beer Fest added to lineup The Joliet Slammers are eannounced the addition of Illinois Hops on 66 Beer Fest to the lineup of the 2017 Frontier League All-Star Game activities planned for July 10-12 in Joliet.

The beer fest will be held in conjunction with the home run derby on Tuesday, July 11.

Illinois Hops on 66 will take place at the Slammers Stadium and will feature mostly Illinois-

based craft breweries. Local craft beer enthusiasts as well as those traveling into Joliet for the All-Star festivities will be able to sample Illinois beers including Goose Island Brewing Compa-

ny, Penrose Brewing Company, Burnt City Brewing, Alarmist Brewing, Tocayo Brewing Company, Solemn Oath Brewery and more.

• The Joliet Slammers presented by ATI Physical Therapy are proud to announce that catcher Sam Tidaback has been signed to a minor league contract by

the Colorado Rockies.

Tidaback was drafted during last summer’s MLB Draft in the 21st round by the Chicago Cubs.

The Plainfield, Illinois native spent last season in the Cubs minor league system, including time at Full Season A Ball with the South Bend Cubs.

Tidaback was released by the Cubs on April 28, 2017.

This season was Tidaback’s first season with the Joliet Slammers.

During his time with the organization, he was hitting .167 with three doubles and three RBI. Tidaback also contributed with a strong performance on the Slammers home opener with two doubles.

Tidaback played high school baseball for Providence Catholic High School. After high school, he played two seasons at both Ball State University and the University of North Georgia.

At North Georgia, he was a two time all-conference selection for the Peach Belt Conference.

The racially diverse cast includes: Elena, Megan, Steven, Sean, Rachel, Cristina, and John.

“Born This Way” is not just a show about and for adults with Down syndrome. People with any disability and those without can relate to the show. Kris Bomgaars and her daughter, cast member Megan, told me that everyone from medical professionals to legislators to restaurant workers and everyone in-between is watching this show.

“I had someone say to me once ‘I didn’t know I could have a conversation with someone who had Down syndrome’” said Kris Bomgaars. “And oh my gosh, are you kidding me I can’t get her [Megan] to stop having conversations.”

Independent living is one of many storylines that viewers see on this current season of “Born This Way.” This past fall, I sat down virtually with Cristina Sanz and her dad Mariano, of Long Beach, Calif. and stars of Born This Way. Cristina and Mariano told me about one of her dreams that she would like viewers to see in season 3. Cristina would like to learn how to live independently in her own apartment.

One of the stars, Steven Clark, was diagnosed with Mosaic Down syndrome, a rare form of Down syndrome that differs from the Down syndrome diagnosis that many of his cast-mates have. In addition to starring on “Born This Way,” Steven is a huge fan of mov-

ies.

He has binders filled with movies he’s seen and wants to see, he plays Challenger baseball, and he hopes to someday try competing in more sports within Special Olympics.

“Not only is it [Born This Way] a docuseries, it’s our lives,” said Steven. “You’ve got to have a narrative, you’ve got to have a story.”

Age is no reason to adjust Baby Steps

DEAR DAVE, My husband and I are in our 50s, and we have just $12,000 to pay off before we’re debt-free. We’ve paid off almost $70,000 in debt in the last two years. We would like to buy a house soon, but we know we also need an emergency fund. It would take us almost a year to build up an emergency fund, so should we make adjustments to the Baby Steps since we’re getting older?

DAWN DEAR DAWN, No! It shouldn’t take you two a year to build up an emergency fund considering the rate at which you’ve been paying off debt. You need a fully funded emergency fund or three to six months of expenses set aside before you start saving for a down payment on a home.

You’ve been making great progress, and you obviously have a good income to be able to pay off debt that quickly. Maybe in your case you could lean a little more toward the three-month side with your emergency fund before you start saving for a house. Then, after you’re all moved in, you could revisit the emergency fund and beef it up to six months.

Just stay on course and stick with the plan, Dawn. Fifty isn’t old.

You two have plenty of time to get your finances in order, find a great home, and look forward to many great years ahead!
