Will County Prosecutor John Connor will take over as State Representative of the 85th District, serving residents of Bolingbrook, Crest Hill, Lockport, Romeoville and Woodridge.

Connor was recently selected by Democratic leaders to fill the remaining year and half left of Emily McAsey’s term. She recently resigned, announcing she would be moving out of state.

According to information from the Will County Democratic Party,after deliberating between four candidates, leaders chose Connor, Saturday to fill the seat. As a Will County assistant state’s attorney, Connor, has been involved in the high-profile cases of Drew Peterson and Christopher Vaughn.

Connor, a Lockport resident, reportedly said he is excited for the opportunity and will hit the ground running as he is headed to Springfield for the special session calling on legislators to approve a state budget by the June 30 deadline.

Elementary school students who register during the mail-in period from July 1 to July 22 are not required to come to August Back-To-School registration days. However all middle school and high school students must come to August Back-To-School registration even if they registered by mail because they must pick up their student IDs, schedules and locker assignments.

The district will require all students, regardless of grade level, to provide proof that they are residents of the district before they will be allowed to register for classes. The verification process is simple if a student’s address or guardianship has not changed from the past school year.

A parent or guardian must provide their own photo ID and one of the following documents to prove residency: A signed lease for the current school year with the name of the parent or

Will County property tax bill A utility bill from the past 30 days in the name of the parent or guardian on it or mail of a business nature (no more than 30 days old) that was sent to the parent or guardian at the home address If there is an address or guardianship change, parents will need to stop by the Administration Center before Back-To-School registration can be completed.

The first day of school for all students is Aug. 17. It will be a full day.

Fireworks are not only illegal but dangerous as well

BY BUGLE STAFF The village of Romeoville is reminding residents that fireworks are not only dangerous but also illegal.

Fireworks are illegal in the State of Illinois. Items such as “silver salutes” or “quarter sticks” are considered explosive devices and possession is a Class 3 felony.

In Romeoville, it is unlawful for any person to possess, display or allow to be displayed, consumer fireworks and/or display fireworks or any other fireworks within the corporate limits of the village without a valid permit.

Possession is not the only concern when it comes to fireworks. A person setting off fireworks can be charged with disorderly conduct if it is alarming and disturbing others.

According to the Romeoville Police Department, one could be held criminally liable if negligent acts result in property damage, injury, or death.

In addition, the village added an amendment to its ordinance on unlawful displays of fireworks to include sky lanterns.

According to the Romeoville Police Department, every year, non-occupational fireworks lead to numerous injuries and deaths. A 2015 study conducted by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, found that approximately 11 people die each year from non-occupational fireworks.

Fireworks-related deaths are often caused by unplanned detonations, direct impacts, or fires.

Many are innocent victims who were not using fireworks themselves.

Case-in-point, on July 5, 2014, an elderly couple from Ohio perished while sleeping when their home caught on fire, ignited by falling debris from fireworks being set off in the neighborhood.

Some common misuses include lighting fireworks in one’s hand, being too close to lit fireworks, setting off fireworks improperly, mischief, igniting fireworks too close to someone, or dismantling fireworks. Malfunctions can be from errant flight paths, tip-over incidents, early ignitions, and blow-outs.

Even legal items, such as sparklers which burn hot enough to melt glass, are dangerous.

The best way to protect your family and friends is not to use any fireworks at home. Instead, attend public displays and leave fireworks to the professionals.

Lockport’s McElligott is 2017 Voyager Media Player of the Year

It wasn’t until the mid-point of the season that Lockport junior Tara McElligott realized what kind of season she was having statistically.

All she did once she realized it was improve and end the season with a .508 batting average, 11 home runs, 17 doubles, a .932 slugging percentage. She scored 56 runs and posted a staggering 73 runs batted in – which is tied for 14th all time in the IHSA for a single season.

“I started watching (the stats) half way through the season. I was looking at my last year’s stats and I had 36 RBI, so I realized what I was putting up was that high,” McElligott said. “At one point, one of my teammates found out I was leading the state in RBI and that was really cool. It was crazy to think about it. I changed my

swing and my approach at the plate and then it was the girls in front of me getting on and doing their jobs. I was keeping everything simple and just seeing the middle of the ball and getting my job done.”

Her accomplishments netted McElligott a IHSA Class 4A first team nod as well as earning her the 2017 Voyager Media Player of the Year honors.

“When I look back on the season, she was a sleeper for a while, then she really got hot in the last half of the season. In that last third of the season, she was on fire,” said Lockport coach Marissa Chovanec. “We had her in the third spot in the order this year and Tara handled the spot well. Some kids in the past have felt the pressure of being the No. 3 hitter and I don’t think that ever crossed her mind. I really felt she stepped up this year on the field SEE SOFTBALL PAGE 10

A catcher by trade, McElligott played her second position of third base the last two seasons before making the move across the diamond to first this year.

“I played third freshman and sophomore year and played first this year. I haven’t played first since eighth grade,” she said. “In the summer, I catch and play third and in college I will catch and play third, but I have always been versatile and my coaches through the years have always told me that knowing different positions will always help.”

Although she still has one more season at Lockport, McElligott has already committed to the University of Illinois-Chicago

“It was a huge weight off my shoulders,” she said. “I just have to play for myself and my team and we just want to win. I don’t have to impress any colleges. It lets you be a less selfish player because you don’t have to worry about your own stats, you can focus on helping the team.”

“Brooklyn has been our starting pitcher for four years, she had been a dominant presence on the mound all four years,” Central coach Anne Campbell said.

“She has a 76-29 career record and 684 career strikeouts. She has kept us in many games this year with her bat also.”

EMILY DYBAS LOCKPORT The senior batted .447 for the Porters with 14 doubles, 47 RBI and 35 runs scored.

PAIGE CALLANS JCA The senior third baseman will play at Lindenwood University next season. This year she hit .423 with 6 doubles, 3 triples. She scored 29 runs, drove in 287 more and stole 17 bases.

“Sara is a great hitter and one of the best outfielders in the area,” said Central coach Anne Campbell.

She stole 16 bases and struck out only twice all season. As a pitcher, she was 10-4 with a 1.90 ERA. “Kiley has been a four-year starter, pitching over half of our games each year,” Suca said. “She is a strong leader for our team.

Her work ethic and desire to succeed put her as a top player in the area. “She has tremendous poise on the mound. Offensively she has been one of the most consistent hitters in our program. She has both power and speed which is a rare combination.”

KAYLEE PIVEN PLAINFIELD NORTH Junior was a member of the All-Southwest Prairie Conference team. She batted .500 for the season, with a .750 slugging percentage. She hit three home runs and drove in 21.

“She is a true team player and a leader and has a great attitude,” said North coach Kelly Ash.

KATIE POLASKI DOWNERS NORTH The senior second baseman batted .527 with a 1.335 OPS. She drove in 30 runs and scored 19.

She was a four-time member of the West Suburban Conference All-Conference team.

“She has been a staple at the top of the Trojan order for the last four years,” said North coach Eric Landschoot. “She will truly be missed by her teammates and coaches. She is truly a multi-dimensional player, an exemplary student and has been a role model student-athlete.”

ASIA ROBINETTE ROMEOVILLE Spartan shortstop batted .438 on the season, with a .481 on base percentage and a .616 slugging percentage

AMBERLY RODRIGUEZ PLAINFIELD EAST Junior centerfielder hit .407 with an on base percentage of .477. She had 46 hits and scored 38 runs, only striking out 9 times in 128 plate appearances, while stealing 12 bases.

SAVANNAH RODRIGUEZ DOWNERS NORTH The junior batted .506 with an OPS of 1.335. She belted five home runs, seven doubles, drove in 30 and scored 19 runs. As a pitcher, she was 14-4 with 130 strike outs in 92 innings with a 1.96 ERA. “The Western Illinois commit hit in the middle of an explosive lineup and was also able to maintain a sub-2.00 ERA against tough competition” Landschoot said.

She had 41 hits, 16 doubles, 3 triples, 27 RBI, scored 33 runs and stole 14 bases. In the field, she made only three errors in 94 total chances.

“Reilly is such a well-rounded great player. She’s a tough out for opponents,” Kinsella said. “She’s always putting the ball in play, making the defense work hard to get her out. Striking out only once this season is proof.”

The Tiger junior was SPC Pitcher of the Year, going 11-1 overall and 6-0 in league play with a 1.71 ERA.She batted .442 with 42 hits, including 12 doubles, a triple and a pair of home runs, while driving in 21.

GRACIE VOULGARIS LOCKPORT Junior was a second-team AllState selection in Class 4A. She batted .448 with a .625 slugging percentage with 50 runs scored and 40 driven in. She hit .448 with 11 doubles and 3 home runs.

Village expands reinvestment program Reinvestment program has been successful this past year

The village of Romeoville is expanding its reinvestment program begun last year to include a reduction in fees for those who want to tear down and rebuild.

According to Assistant Village Manager Dawn Caldwell the reinvestment program has been successful this past year with residents looking to cash in on rewards for reinvestment into their properties.

The residential investment program was first introduced to create more home value especially in the older sections of town to encourage viable sustainable neighborhoods. It was designed to help boost appearance, increase property value and reduce costs to homeowners to build some of these improvements.

The village has opted to expand the program to ensure it is open to the entire community and for those who may find it is better to tear down and rebuild. The demolition and redevelopment permit fee of a 2,000 square-foot home will be reduced from $16,000 to a maximum of $3,000. The program will include various incentives to encourage new home construction in older neighborhoods throughout the community.

Noak said the teardown and rebuild scenario may not happen often, the idea to adjust the program was to make it applicable to the entire community.

“We don’t want to discourage anyone from trying to reinvest, so we are adding this philosophy to the program that in some instances where building new just makes more sense. The overall improvement helps out the neighborhood and we want to help streamline the process,” aid Noak.

Residents choosing to do so can also change the footprint as long as the building fits the lot and is within property code.

“The Romeoville Reinvestment Program has already been a great success for homeowners looking to make improvements. We are excited to be able to expand the program further to allow new development in older neighborhoods,” said Noak.

While the new addition to the program encourages new home building, the existing program provides incentives for start-up business and home improvements including new room or covered porch additions, driveway upgrades, siding/windows improvements, or new landscaping.
