NASCAR’s young guns With 15 drivers 30 or younger, the sport’s youth movement is underway and 25-year-old Kyle Larson is helping pave the way

When Kyle Larson takes to the track at Chicagoland Speedway this weekend for the Monster Energy Overton’s 400, it will be his second trip to Illinois in the last few weeks.

On June 14, Larson came to Chicago and went to the Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital to visit with veterans and assist in their food pantry.

Larson, driver of the No. 42 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 for Chip Ganassi Racing, is Chicagoland Speedway’s ambassador for their Stars and Stripes Weekend as it hosts its biggest celebration of active duty military and veterans ever June 28-July 1.

“NASCAR and a lot of the sponsors do a lot for the military veterans and it has been fun to be a part of it,” Larson said. “In Charlotte, I got to interview a military spouse with Coca-Cola then here we got to go to a veteran’s hospital and help distribute food and surprise one of them with tickets for a race. It seems like every week, we are doing something to show our support for our military and I think that is very important.”

As a sport, NASCAR fans historically have a more personal relationship with the athletes.

“I think we are all just real guys and we are normal and I think we do a good job of showing people that we are just like them,” Larson said. “I think that compared to other sports, we spend a lot of time with and around our fans while we are on our job and I think that helps us stay down to Earth and I think that translates to everyday life as well.

At age 25, Larson is among a youth movement in the sport that currently features 15 of the series’ full timers less than 30 years old – nine of them being 25 and younger.

With drivers like Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. retiring over the last few years and some of the top names in the sport like Martin Truex, Jr. (37),

Kurt Busch (39), Kevin Harvick (42) and Jimmie Johnson (42) all around 40 – the young guys will be carrying the NASCAR torch into the 2020s.

“It is nice to see the youth movement rolling in through NASCAR right now even though the older guys are still winning all the races. To be one of the guys leading that charge is cool.

We have to keep trying hard to win races while we are still young,” Larson said. “There is a sense that we have to lead like they did and respect the sport like they did and do a good job

of promoting and doing whatever you can to bring a positive impact to the series. I feel that all of us young guys have done a good job with that. We all have our own personalities and it has been good.”

The 2013 NASCAR Nationwide Series Rookie of the Year, Larson began running Cup Series full time in 2014 and claimed the 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Rookie of the Year award as well.

He earned his first win in 2016 at Michigan before recording four wins last season. To date, Larson has five Cup wins, 71 top

10 finishes and has started on the pole six times.

Larson does not have a Cup win this season, but does have one on the Xfinity Series.

He is looking for his first win of 2018 in Joliet – a track he has had success on.

Larson finished fifth last season and has posted three top 10 finishes at Chicagoland Speedway in his four Cup starts, placing seventh in 2015 and third in 2014. His only finish outside the top 10 was in 2016 when he placed 18th.

Larson placed second the last two seasons, as well as placing second in 2014 and third in 2013.

Larson is also looking forward to getting back to summer racing in Joliet.

“Chicagoland has always been one of my favorites and I think moving it into the summer months is good. It is good for the racing because the track should be hotter and slicker and give us a chance to move around more and give us other racing lines,” he said. “I am looking forward to it and we are hoping to go out there and run well.”

Amazon delivers $10K for Joliet food bank center

South Suburban Center: $1 donation translates to $8 in groceries

The newest distribution center for the Northern Illinois Food Bank has some additional cash to help its mission of feeding the hungry.

On June 12, volunteers from Amazon’s Joliet fulfillment center visited the new South Suburban Center in Joliet, organizing product and offering up a $10,000 do-

nation to help feed the area hungry.

The donation was part of what Amazon refers to as a Community Kaizen – a Japanese term for “change for the better.”

Amazon representatives took a tour with food bank workers of the new 18,000 square-foot facility, offering up information on how to better streamline activity inside the warehouse.

“We are very proud at Amazon to make change for the better, and

we take a certain process and look at it from a visual standpoint, an efficiency standpoint, and speed, time and quality standpoints,” said Govind Singh, Site Leader for Amazon. “Then we look to break it into parts and improve that. We hope to contribute to the food bank and make the process more efficient so that we can feed more people.”

For every dollar the Northern Illinois Food Bank receives, it can distribute $8 worth of groceries.

That means that Amazon’s donation represents $80,000 worth of food provided by the food bank.

Amazon has been donating product to the Northern Illinois Food Bank since 2016. Those donations have totaled 2-million pounds of food, and includes produce, dairy, and shelf stable foods.

“We are using that product, particularly the produce, to go out and help provide the nutrition that many of our families need, particularly those who are involved in some of our health programs,” said Julie Yurko, president

and CEO of the Northern Illinois Food Bank. “These are folks that suffer from diabetes, high blood pressure, other medical complications, and they need really nutritious foods.”

Yurko added the most important message for everyone is that regardless of a recovering economy and decreasing unemployment, there are still 40 million Americans who are living in poverty and who are suffering food insecurity.

“What we have found is that with this recovery, those who are living in poverty or below are not recovering like the rest. And I don’t

know if everybody understands that, I don’t know if people know that their neighbors are still out there struggling and are literally going to bed hungry.”

Yurko said with donations like what Amazon’s, there is enough food to go around. It’s just a matter of the community coming together.

“Amazon is giving their time.

They’re making a financial investment, they’re giving us food, they’re giving us their expertise.

It is like the trifecta of fabulous,” Yurko said. “What you should know about the food bank is that we need you, that there’s a role for you here, you will be welcomed, and that together we will make sure that everybody has full bellies every day. It is a solvable issue.”

The Northern Illinois Food Bank covers about 800 feeding sites in 13 counties, reaching about 70,000 people weekly. The bank operates out of a main distribution center in Geneva, and three additional branches, including the new South Suburban Center.

The Heritage Corridor Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) is releasing its “2018 Heritage Corridor Ale Trail Passport” to inspire brew connoisseurs to experience, enjoy, and explore a true haven of craft beer – the Heritage Corridor Ale Trail.

“Whether you live on the trail (from Berwyn’s Flapjack Brewery to Ottawa’s Tangled Roots Brewing Company) or you live in Chicago looking for a flavorful escape, you’ll want to grab a Heritage Corridor Ale Trail Passport,” stated Dan Mulka, marketing manager for the Heritage Corridor CVB. “Not only will you have a guide for exploring the Trail for the rest of the 2018 calendar, you will be able to earn nifty swag along the way.”

Getting your kicks on Route 66 The Mother Road offers amazing sights as it winds through Illinois

Perhaps it is the yearning for yesteryear that endears so many to Route 66.

Who wouldn’t want to jump into a classic car and explore the United States, stopping at shiny new service stations to pump gas into your vehicle, or sip a cold drink from the soda shops that dot the roadway?

Such sepia-toned wishes of driving the Mother Road in its heyday could prompt many of us to start packing for a trip.

Ford had been mass-producing vehicles for a little more than a decade when Route 66 was commissioned on Nov. 11, 1926. It was one of the original highways within the U.S. Highway System, its 2,448 miles starting in Chicago before arriving on the West Coast in Los Angeles (and later the Santa Monica Pier).

By 1985, Route 66 had been removed from the federal highway system, as the entire road had been replaced by the Interstate Highway System.

But it’s still possible to get an idea of what the roadway looked like: Just stop in Lexington to take a trip down “Memory Lane,” a 1-mile stretch of the original 1926 alignment of Route 66 pavement. It was turned into an interpretive trail and is open year-round to pedestrians and bicycles. There, people can delight in the restored vintage billboards and signage.

Despite it not being part of the Interstate Highway System, every year thousands still travel Route 66 to explore the communities that make up America’s Main Street.

Just a small area of Route 66 in Illinois can net some fun experiences. Take Macoupin County: Stop in Girard for a handmade soda at Doc’s Soda Fountain, which opened in 1929 as part of Deck’s Drug Store.

Take in the 22-foot-high granite monument in Mount Olive of Mary Harris “Mother” Jones, known for her work as an organizer for the United Mine Workers. And, if you’re willing to go off the beaten path, you can find the 34 separate bird tracks an errant turkey left on the wet highway cement in the 1920s (find them south of Nilwood on Donaldson Road).

Any road trip should include visits

to the many giant characters that call various Route 66 communities home.

The Gemini Giant still towers over Wilmington. He holds a rocket and wears a space helmet — unlike his counterpart, the Lauterbach Man in Springfield, which holds an American flag and wears a stocking cap. Both are 28-foot “Muffler Man” creations from International Fiberglass, which were made as a promotional tool for auto shops.

Of course, the 19-foot fiberglass man holding a hot dog in Atlanta shouldn’t be missed either (too bad it’s not closer to the giant catsup bottle that served as a water tower in Collinsville).

And don’t forget to stop in Lincoln to see the 12-foot-tall Abraham Lincoln on a 24-foot-tall covered wagon.

There are too many amazing sights to be seen on the Mother Road to list them all. But we offer a few suggestions for those who hop on the roadway at its starting point near Lake Michigan in Chicago and head southwest as they aim to get their kicks on the portion of Route 66 that travels through Illinois.

TEXACO STATION, 417 W. WAUPANSIE ST. IN DWIGHT Ambler’s Texaco in Dwight is a shining example of the domestic-style gas stations along Route 66 during the mid20th century. Built in 1933, the station had wood clapboard siding, an arched roof and residential windows adorned with shutters and flower boxes. Three Texaco gas pumps out front were sheltered by a canopy. In 2002, it was donated to the village of Dwight, which, with the help of the National Park Service, restored it and turned it into a visitor center.

ROUTE 66 ASSOCIATION HALL OF FAME & MUSEUM, 110 W. HOWARD ST. IN PONTIAC With the world’s largest painting of the Route 66 shield on the outside and thousands of artifacts inside, the Route 66 Association Hall of Fame & Museum in Pontiac is a shrine to the starting stretch of the Mother Road. The current incarnation opened in a former firehouse in 2004 and honors people and places that made significant contributions to the history and character of the road.

BEER NUTS, 103 N. ROBINSON ST. IN BLOOMINGTON Travelers have been able to find Beer Nuts since 1937.

That’s the year Arlo Shirk and his father, Edward Shirk, bought a small confectionery store in downtown Bloomington, along with the recipe for a special glazed peanut. In 1950, the Shirks packaged the first bag for a local liquor store, calling them “Shirk’s Glazed Peanuts.” Three years later, the name was changed to Beer Nuts.

FUNKS GROVE PURE MAPLE SIRUP, 5257 HISTORIC U.S. 66 IN SHIRLEY/FUNKS GROVE Production of Funks Grove Pure Maple Sirup has been a family operation since the mid-1800s on land just off Route 66 between Shirley and Bloomington.

In early spring each year, the maple trees are tapped and the sap is processed into the sweet product that has made this business a favorite stop among Route 66 travelers. Tours of the facility are available.

ATLANTA MURALS, SOUTHWEST ARCH STREET IN ATLANTA More than 80 painters joined forces in 2003 to help preserve the art of handpainted advertising murals in Atlanta as part of the LetterRip on Route 66 event.

Five murals were painted, all depicting various scenes from life in downtown Atlanta worked into historical advertisements. The year before, members of the LetterHeads organization painted the J.M. Judy & Sons grocery store advertisement that stretches the full length of one downtown building.

INTERNATIONAL ROUTE 66 MOTHER ROAD FESTIVAL, DOWNTOWN SPRINGFIELD More than 1,000 classic cars and tens of thousands of spectators annually attend the three-day International Route 66 Mother Road Festival in downtown Springfield. This year’s is scheduled for Sept. 21-23. There always has been food, special guests and musical entertainment. But from the Friday night cruise and restoration-parts vendors to the classic restored cars, trucks and motorcycles lining the curbs, it has been the motors that matter.

BRING THE

HEAT NASCAR returns to Joliet’s Chicagoland Speedway in its original summer date

For the first time since 2010, the NASCAR weekend in Joliet will take place in July.

After spending the last seven years as the first race of the Chase for the Cup, the Monster Energy Series Overton’s 400 will run Sunday, July 1. The race will kick off NBC’s live race coverage of the season.

“We’re incredibly excited about the return to July,” Chicagoland Speedway President Scott Paddock said when the news was released in May of 2017. “We always listen to our fans, and this is something they’ve asked for — a time when the weather in Chicago is perfect, kids are on summer break, and families look to enjoy memorable experiences together, especially around the Fourth of July holiday weekend.”

The storylines are aplenty for the fans that attend the race this weekend.

This season has been dominated by a pair of drivers taking up residence in Victory Lane.

Kevin Harvick has posted a series-best five wins on the season, while Kyle Busch has four victories. Busch, however, leads in points by 72 over Harvick.

This season is also about who has not won.

Chevy has posted only two wins on the season, and one of the drivers of Chevy is Jimmie Johnson, who has yet to win a race through the first 16 races of the year.

This is the longest stretch Johnson has gone to open a season without a win since his first full Cup Series campaign in 2002.

Mistwood hosts WWGA Amateur

When the 118th Women’s Western Golf Association Amateur Championship gets underway at Romeoville’s Mistwood Golf Club, it will do so with representatives from 25 different states and seven foreign countries.

Not to be lost, however, are the 29 players from Illinois – including five from the Voyager Media coverage area.

The tournament will feature a pair of Bolinbrook residents in Jessica Yuen and Abby Bitto.

Yuen, who recently finished her sophomore season at the University of Missouri, has all but made Mistwood her home course over the years, working with several of the instructors.

“This is like my home course.

I have played here a lot,” Yuen said. “I know the greens really well. Kelpie’s Corner (holes 1417) will be the toughest and as long as I shoot par or better there, I should be OK.” She said she will not have added pressure to perform well because she knows the course.

“I will take this as a confidence booster,” Yuen said. “This is so much more relaxed (than college). I am very familiar with this course, so I know how to play well – what to do and what not to do. At the end of the day, if I don’t play well, I will know what I need to do to improve my game.

Yuen, a Neuqua Valley graduate, had four top-two finishes in high school and winning state twice.

While at Missouri, she was a 2017 NCAA regional qualifier as an individual.

Isabella Abdullah just finished her freshman season at Elon University in North Carolina.

The two graduates will be with a pair of incoming seniors in Caroline Wing and Lauren Beaudreau.

Wing was a sectional qualifier last season, while Beaudreau took the year off of playing high school golf to play in the Swinging Skirts American Junior Golf Association Invitational in California, There she tied for 28th with a 54-hole score of 12-overpar 228.

As a freshman at Benet, Beaudreau placed fourth at the Class AA state meet and missed winning a state title by one stroke as a sophomore, finishing second to Lincoln-Way Central sophomore Grace Curran, who is also participating in the WWGA Amateur.

She is looking forward to playing against a challenging field.

“I played the Western Junior a couple of years ago and I had a really great experience and when I saw the amateur was at Mistwood and was only 25

minutes from my house, it was a super easy decision,” said Beaudreau, who is verbally committed to play at Notre Dame.

“I love this golf course and it is a great tournament field and I am really excited to be playing with some really great players.

Mistwood is a very challenging course and I think it sets up well fro my game.

“My goal is to make the cut and after that it is match play and anything can happen.”

After her hiatus, Beaudreau said she plans on returning to

play for Benet this fall.

“I am playing high school golf this season and my goal is to win the state title,” she said. “It is really nice to see where my game stacks with some of the best and it is a lot of confidence going back to high school.”

“That was one of the races that started to turn things around last year,” Childers said. “We led some laps and ran in the top three the entire day, so I feel that with the things we have learned over the winter and the cars we have built and the momentum we have that we can go out and compete for another win.”

Harvick & Childers: A winning combination

In 2013, Kevin Harvick and team owner Richard Childress decided to part ways with Harvick eventually joining Stewart-Haas Racing – Harvick made one phone call that could have changed his career.

That call was to Rodney Childers, who at the time was crew chief for the No. 55 car for Michael Waltrip Racing.

“He called me one day and wanted to meet with me and wanted me to be his crew chief and I could tell form the get go that he really wanted me to do it and he had my back and wanted to do it together,” Childers said. “After a few meetings, we were dead set that we were going to do this together and push hard every week and win races.

I think Kevin has always been one of the best drivers in the garage and as a crew chief, you try

and do somethings to try and be with one of those good drivers some day and put yourself in a position to win races. It is something you dream about and just hope you get the chance.”

That season, the duo won the NASCAR Championship, the first for either of them a year later the team placed second and the No. 4 team is back in search of another championship this year.

Harvick is currently second in points this season, 75 points behind Kyle Busch, however, he has five wins this season – the most in the series.

“We talked about a lot of things going into this year that we may not be where we need to be and that we need to stay positive and if we couldn’t get this car going – we have the Mustang coming next year and we had to keep working at it. Then we came out of the gate with fast SEE WINNING PAGE 9
