Midwest Compassion Center – 1 of 43 medical marijuana dispensaries in Illinois – is taking its mission to serve those in need of pain relief seriously, opening its doors to patients from Will, DuPage and Kane counties.

The Romeoville-based company received the sixth highest score out of 230 applicants for its dedication to patient health, care and security, and MCC prides itself on not only caring for its patients but furthering research, as well.

MCC went through a rigorous application process, nearly 10

months, ensuring quality control, policy and reporting procedures, and extensive security measures were in place.

With 21 years in the healthcare field, Nicole van Rensburg brings her expertise in physician education, quality assurance and patient interactions to MCC. Her family businesses provide mobile neurological, ultrasound, allergy and asthma testing in 28 states throughout the country.

She and her brother William Hollander, dedicated to research and quality care, just opened the facility about a month ago, serving patients from three counties and they expect the numbers to grow as patients are approved for the state-

After passing state regulations, the group received a special-use permit from the village of Romeoville,

which van Rensburg said has been very supportive and hands-on in assuring its quality establishment.

“We are providing high-quality care to patients and it is important to us that we treat the whole patient, serving not only their wants and needs, but to be able to advise on alternatives, knowledgeable in what strains are best,” said van Rensburg.

Hollander explains that MCC sees medical cannabis as another tool in treatment that can provide the much-needed relief patients need. He said there is a wide gamut of speculation about the use of cannabis.

“Since there hasn’t been a formal research, you hear anything from it’s the worst thing for you to it’s a cure-all,” he said. “We look at this to further our own research. For

so many of our patients, this is an option for those who cannot eat or sleep properly, suffering from cancer. Medical cannabis can help remedy that. You see the relief on their faces – this is the first time they are using something that is helping them cope with their symptoms without other side effects.”

Shockwaves went through the medical cannabis community May 27 when it was announced that the Illinois House approved a plan to expand the state’s medical marijuana pilot program and add post-traumatic stress disorder and terminal illness to the list of allowed conditions.

Lawmakers voted 86-27 to advance the measure, which Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner decided to support after first opposing the idea. It now goes to the Senate, where it’s expected to pass.

Illinois’ four-year pilot program was set to sunset at the end of 2017.

Under the bill, it will continue to July 1, 2020. The program started in 2014 but the first medical cannabis sales didn’t occur until November 2015.

“This amendment is the first real sign toward reforming the program and opening it up to a greater pool of potential patients,” said van Rensburg. “It sent shockwaves throughout the online Illinois medical cannabis community.

Many are still in disbelief.”

MCC is currently working on outreach efforts, attending various social events and support groups to help educate the public about their operation.

MCC is located in an industrial business park at 1335 Lakeside Drive, Suite 4.

Bolingbrook’s Cavalcade of Planes returns Bugle File Photo

Residents can look forward to the return of the Cavalcade of Planes at the Bolingbrook Clow International Airport this weekend.

Last year, the airport was closed for extensive repairs to its runway funded by a federal grant. The airport reopened in December 2015.

Despite a little missing grass, manager Joe DePaulo said the annual show is set to get back on track – complete with all the fan favorites.

This year’s event, hosted by the village of Bolingbrook, marks the 16th year since it began. From just a couple hundred people and handful of planes, the annual event has now grown into to a large community

event.

“While it is not an air show, we have a variety of things that actually make it better,” said DePaulo. “You can get up and close and touch and feel a real aircraft. Young people get excited about it and we want to promote aviation.”

The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., June 4-5 at the airport, located at 130 Clow International Parkway, Bolingbrook.

New plane manufacturers including Cessna, Piper, Diamond, Beechcraft, Cirrus, new Light-Sport Aircraft, jets and helicopters will be on display.

Many warbirds will also be onsite, including the Bearcat – an aircraft used late in World War II that went on to be used by the Blue Angels. Only eight Bearcats are still flying in the country. The T6 Trainer will be giving rides and helicopter

rides will also be provided for a quick tour of the neighborhood.

“It’s an amazing experience,” said DePaulo.

The Illinois Aviation Museum will be hosting a variety of events, including a simulator ride.

Parachuters will be performing twice an hour; and food, drink and ice cream will be available in the World War II inspired Canteen in one of the airport’s hangars.

The cost is $3 to enter; $1 for those ages 6 to 12; and free for 5 and

under.

“This is just a great inexpensive time to look at aircrafts old and new,” said DePaulo. “Just about everything you could imagine will be at this year’s Cavalcade of Planes.”

In one of Will County’s Forest Preserve District oldest events, residents are asked to step back in time.

Watch reenactors portray life during the 18th Century French fur trade era, then learn through hands-on activities how that time period compares to

modern life at the 33rd annual “Island Rendezvous” June 11 in Romeoville.

The free Rendezvous will begin at 11 a.m. and end at 3 p.m. at the Forest Preserve District of Will County’s Isle a la Cache Museum, 501 E. Romeo Road. Based on similar events the district hosts, the event, depending on the weather, could see 800 to 1,000 people at this year’s Island Rendezvous.

Island Rendezvous is one of the longest-running programs that the Forest Preserve District of Will County offers, beginning in 1984, it has been held every year since.

This year’s event is being refreshed for today’s families with more interactive stations that

connect the past to the present.

“We’ve rebuilt Island Rendezvous with families and fun in mind.

We’ve loosened up the event and made it more welcoming, more approachable, more userfriendly – essentially it mirrors the philosophy of Isle a la Cache Museum,” said Chris Gutmann, facility supervisor at Isle a la Cache.

“Not only is the event ‘new,’ but there are likely multiple stations visitors have never seen before.

That new element will be constant as we seek to change the event every year to provide new and fresh experiences for the public.”

For instance, visitors can sit in a modern kayak and then a birch bark canoe to compare the two vessels and talk about the differences in the modes of transportation. Participants also can learn to shoot a bow and arrow or try the sport of lacrosse, which originated as a Native American game.

“Isle a la Cache Museum is an educational facility, and it is designed to provide learning opportunities through experiences.

Past Island Rendezvous programs were more about watching, but the revamped program is more about participating,” said Gutmann.

Island Rendezvous also will feature French crafts, storytelling, live music, a skillet toss, firestarting demonstrations, facepainting, a fishing game and a petting zoo.

Also new this year, the live bird shows will be held indoors in the Trader’s Cabin. Live birds of prey shows will be held at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

Free show tickets will be available at the museum’s front desk and will be required for the birds of prey shows because seating is limited. Gutmann explained limiting the crowd is part of the bird care protocol established by the district’s new presenter, Willowbrook Wildlife Center.

Rendezvous attendees also can explore a Native American longhouse. Redhawk, a Native American speaker, will represent the Potawatomi and Ojibwe nations and talk about Native American culture.

Free parking is available at the museum’s main lot; once the main lot fills up, shuttles will take visitors to and from the west parking lot. For more information, visit ReconnectWithNature.org.

Romeoville approves enhancements for O’Hara Woods, Meadowdale Park The Romeoville village board has approved proposals from Wight & Company to design development through construction for O’Hara Woods and Meadowdale Park.

O’Hara Woods is 60 acres of nature preserve areas with trails, a pavilion, picnic tables and outdoor rentals. It is currently unavailable for public use during the design and construction phase of the area.

The renovation would include repairs to the pavilion roof, security lighting, poured flooring and upgraded restrooms so that they are ADA compliant. In addition, the old play structure equipment will be removed and replaced with a nature

themed playground environment for children 2-5 years of age with log steppers and Baggo sets.

“O’Hara Woods has always been a popular area for recreation for our residents. We look forward to enhancing the area for future outdoor activities for individuals and families alike,” said Mayor John Noak. Meadowdale Park is a 2.5 acre parcel in Meadowdale Estates near Greenhaven subdivision that has been vacant for 10 years.

Development of the park will include input acquired from residents at a community meeting held on March 10.

“This area is in need of

development and it is an ideal location for a park,” said Kelly Rajzer, Director of Parks and Recreation. The designs from Wight & Company will include a gazebo, benches, trails, drinking fountain, and possibly playground and exercise stations depending on the construction estimate and available funds in the budget.

These park improvements have been budgeted and approved for Fiscal Year 2016-2017. Construction will begin sometime this summer, after designs are completed and approved for both sites. The estimated completion date is late fall 2016.

In May, we celebrated Williams Syndrome Awareness Month – a time for us to see Williams syndrome and other intellectual disabilities as a gift. It was also a time to educate our communities about how to accept and include those of us with special needs.

Take, for example, my friend Joelle Packard, 15, of Chevy Chase, Maryland, who was diagnosed with Williams syndrome.

According to the Williams Syndrome Association, Williams syndrome is a genetic condition that is present at birth. Despite having medical problems, cardiovascular disease, certain distinguishing facial characteristics, developmental delays and learning disabilities, many with Williams syndrome are very social and friendly. There are 20,000 to 30,000 people in the U.S. who are diagnosed with Williams syndrome, according to the WSA. “I struggle with writing, but I’m really social and I love people,” said Joelle.

“Having Williams syndrome makes me very, very social.”

In February, I had the chance to visit Joelle and her family in conjunction with producing three podcasts on Special Chronicles from the Washington, D.C., area. The first stop was the Special Olympics International office. Then, I had an opportunity to visit Joelle’s school to see how inclusive her private all-girls Catholic school is for people with special needs. The final day, I had an opportunity to join the Packard’s at a Special Olympics unified basketball exhibition game at Blessed Sacrament School in Washington, D.C. A “unified” game means that players come from both the special needs community and

Independence principal to retire June 29 Elementary School Principal retires after 18 years with Valley View School District 365U Kim Mulcahy plans on relaxing this summer for the first time in many years.

But before the Independence Elementary School Principal retires June 29 after 18 years with Valley View School District 365U, she had some excellent advice for young teachers.

“Don’t get discouraged,” the veteran educator said. “It will be more challenging than you might have expected, but it is the best profession there is.”

In looking back on her career, which began as a special education teacher at Bolingbrook High School two decades ago, Mulcahy praised the many “good people” she has worked with at BHS, Humphrey Middle School, R.C. Hill Elementary School and Independence.

“The staff at Independence truly is a great example of the people

who work in our district because they care about kids,” she said.

“They come to work every day and work their hardest to accomplish their personal goals and the goals that are set for them.”

The key to success, Mulcahy said, is to treat parents as partners because everyone has the same goal…student success.

She firmly believes the best way to meet that goal is to expect big things out of every student.

“They will surprise you and meet those expectations,” she said. “Many will exceed them.”

While Mulcahy admits she’ll miss coming to school every day, she’s looking forward to catching up on her reading.

“I’m going to take some time to read what I want to read,” she said.

“I’ll have a lot more time to read for pleasure than I have now.”

She also plans on spending more time with her husband, Jerry, her married daughter, Kate, a Romeoville High School graduate, and her recently engaged daughter, Erin, a Bolingbrook High School graduate, as well as her two grandchildren.

Plus a little summertime travel to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland and the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto is on her wish list.

“I’m just going to take the summer off and decide where I’m going after that,” she said.

Two things are for certain.

She’ll remain a Bolingbrook resident. And she’s already booked to make an appearance at next year’s Independence Family Reading Night and the Book Fair.

Raiders’ McConico places fourth in both Class 3A hurdle events By mark gregory SportS reporter

Bolingbrook senior Jaylen McConico came into the state track and field meet looking to be in the top five in the state in both the 110-meter high hurdles and the 300 intermediate hurdles.

What he did was better than just earn a medal.

The Illinois State University recruit placing fourth in both races, with a time of 14.21 seconds in the 110s and a 38.36 in the 300s.

Both of his times earned him a Bolingbrook school record.

“This is a big improvement from last year and I am proud of myself because top five was the goal for both,” McConico said. “I am at a loss for words.”

McConico came into the season with a list of goals and he was happy he was able to hit them all.

“I came in to this year with a list of goals and I was just able to knock them off the list one by

one,” he said. “There is a lot of a lot of competition down here and I don’t see a lot of competition all year, so to get down here to compete and achieve it was great. I am glad I got all my achievements.”

McConico said it didn’t come easy.

“A lot of hard work went into this,” he said. “I don’t have the luxury of a hurdle coach, so I have been watching past hurdlers and taking what they did and bring it here. This is a great way to end my high school career. This is just a great feeling.”

The medals give McConico three for his career as he now owns three of the five medals the Raiders have ever won in hurdle races. He is the lone runner to ever place in the 110s and he ties Mike Gray (4th, 1994) for the highest place by a Raider in the 300s.

Also earning a state medal for Bolingbrook was Justin Hill, who tied for ninth in the high jump,

Lewis places 2nd in GLVC standings

The Great Lakes Valley Conference announced on Monday (May 16) that the Lewis University Athletics Department has finished second in the 2015-16 GLVC All-Sports Trophy Standings.

This marks the fourth-straight year that the Flyers have earned a runner-up finish.

Indianapolis (203 points) won the title for the fifthstraight year, followed by the Flyers (171.5). Lewis claimed a school-record seven conference championships, including: women’s volleyball, men’s basketball, women’s tennis; and men’s and women’s indoor/ outdoor track and field. It is the

most GLVC titles by a school since 2012 Champion Indianapolis had seven in 2011-12.

“We once again showed our overall athletic excellence in the GLVC which is routinely regarded as the strongest Division II Conference in the nation,” Lewis Director of Athletics Dr. John Planek said.

The GLVC All-Sports Trophy is presented to the institution that demonstrates the best all-around performance in the league’s 20 sponsored sports. Points are allocated based on overall finish in the league standings and finish in their respective conference tournaments.

Romeoville comes up just short of regional title Raiders take regional crown

Trailing 9-2 after four innings, it looked like No. 14 seed Romeoville’s Cinderella playoff run would come to an end against four-time regional champ No. 6 seed Plainfield Central Saturday in the Plainfield South Regional final.

However, the Spartans would battle back with six runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth, but it wasn’t enough as the Spartans fell 11-10.

“We’ve overcome a lot,” Romeoville coach Christina Douglas said. “We struggled at the beginning of the year and had some inexperience. These kids came out here against a team that has been here a ton of times and competed. This is the best game I have coached at this high school.

Sara Peterson hit two home runs, the first in the bottom of the first inning for a 2-0 Central lead.

After a two-run double from Romeoville sophomore Madison Massaro in the top of the third to tie the game, Alejandra Ochoa answered with a solo home run for a 3-2 Wildcat lead after three.

The floodgates opened in the bottom of the fourth inning.

With the wind blowing out, Central pushed three runs across and then Ochoa hit her second home run of the game in as many innings, a three-run shot to give Central a 9-2 advantage.

It could have been worse but Brittany Osborne made a diving catch before the home run to save another run.

“I just have a motto where nothing touches the ground,” said Osborne, who made another diving catch later in the game.

The Spartans seemed out of it, but on this day the game was far from over with.

Sophomore Katherine Szulczyk blasted a two-run home run and after an error, two more runs came across before Osborne finished the inning of with a tworun homer of her own to get the six runs back and make it a 9-8 game.

“I have been struggling the past couple games dipping and trying to hit home runs,” Osborne said.

“I just stayed level and used all my energy to hit it out.”

“They made great plays in the outfield early on,” Douglas said.

“If they don’t make those plays, we score a few more runs early.

The fact we took this team seven innings with no let up is a credit to these girls and their hard work.

A couple breaks here and there and it goes our way.”

With two outs in the bottom half of the inning, a walk was followed

by Peterson’s second homer for an 11-8 Wildcat advantage.

But Skye Osborne opened the top of the sixth with a home run and Asia Robinette added a RBI single to make it 11-10.

Romeoville had one more chance in the seventh after a Brittany Osborne single, but Skye Osborne hit a hard line drive, right to the centerfielder to end the game.

The game could be a turning point for the Romeoville program, which was playing in its first regional title since at least 1996, which is as far back as the IHSA records go, as the Spartans lose just two players to graduation.

“A lot of these girls are coming back,” Douglas said. “It is within our grasp now. If they continue to work hard, good things will come.

We have time.”

“We will be back next year,” Brittany Osborne said.

The Spartans advanced to the final with a 10-3 win over Andrew, the No. 3 seed in the Lockport Sectional.

Rhiannon Zeffield had a grand slam and added two hits, while Brittany and Skye Osborne had two hits each. Audrey Sizemore picked up the win, allowing six hits and three earned runs, striking out four.

•No. 10 Bolingbrook brought home a regional title with a 3-0 win over No. 2 West Aurora in the Batavia Regional final.

The Raiders got on the board in the second inning as Natalie Bond doubled and Nicole Bond followed with a RBI single.

In the sixth inning Hallie Hall scored on a squeeze play from Elizabeth Zielinski for a 2-0 lead.

Gianna Esposito scored an insurance run in the seventh as she tripled and scored on a hit from Nia Fowlkes.

The Raiders wouldn’t need any insurance runs though as Lorris Pondo pitched the shutout.
