Aldi on Airport and Weber roads is under construction to expand its refrigerated space and will be closed until mid-July.

Aldi shoppers will soon return to a new shopping experience at its Romeoville location at Airport and Weber roads.

While the store stayed open during during the current construction phase, the store is set to temporarily close June 18 due to further work. It is expected to reopen mid-July.

The grocery retailer is constructing an addition to the store at 398 S. Weber Road. The store first opened at this location in 2009.

The 2,060 square-foot expansion to the front of the store, will allow them to offer more refrigerated space inside and a reconfigured checkout area.

Construction taking place at RHS $1.8 million project begun by Abbey Paving is to provide better site development

As time has taken its toll on the parking lot of Romeoville High School, further improvements are in the works this summer.

The $1.8 million project begun by Abbey Paving is to provide better site development for RHS, circulation and access from Taylor Road. The parking lot will be equipped with a new sub base and repaved as well as reconfigured with construction of a new access drive connecting the south lot to Taylor Road, with a right-in/right-out entrance. In addition, concrete curbs, landscaped islands and stormwater detention will be added.

Completion is expected by mid-August. This is the second phase of improvements for

RHS, last year, improvements were made creating a dedicated loop for drop-off at one end of the parking lot and a separate place for student parking, eliminating the crisscrossing of lanes.

Valley View also will be incorporating additional bus and staff parking to the north of RHS between the Print Shop and the visitor bleachers at the stadium, including an area to accommodate a modular building to house drivers who park at RHS. According to the district, with the addition of 14 buses to accommodate the transportation of students attending its expanded Early Childhood center, the need for expanded parking for both buses and the drivers was necessary. The building will eliminate the need to shuttle them to and from the Spangler Transportation Center.

The district will enter a 36-month rental lease on a 24 x 30 modular building, allowing some flexibility until a more permanent solution is formulated. The rental lease could be converted to a purchase lease at a later date if desired.

In the world of wifi and smart phones, communication can always be at one’s fingertips. But what if that signal is dropped? What happens to emergency communication then?

Enter, the Bolingbrook Amateur Radio Society (BARS), whose experience with radio operations, can be a lifeline for communities in distress or a window to the world on an ordinary day.

“More than just nerds playing around with radios,” as Lawrence Hageman, member of the BARS, would tell it, amateur radio has a place in benefiting the community.

Members of BARS use their experience with electronics and communications techniques to provide a free public service to their communities during a disaster, all without needing a cell phone or the Internet.

Ham radio has the ability to work reliably under any conditions from almost any location and create an independent communications network.

BARS was established in the early 1970s, and has a strong membership base plus a year-round calendar of events and activities. BARS specializes in SKYWARN (trained weather spotters), emergency communications, Field Day, and community event communications every year.

The National Association for Amateur Radio believes that amateur radio (ham radio), is a popular hobby and service that brings people, electronics and communication together and promotes its use across the world.

“Hams can literally throw a wire in a tree for an antenna, connect it to a battery-powered transmitter and communicate halfway around the world,” Sean Kutzko of the American Radio Relay League, the national association for Amateur Radio. “Hams do this by using a layer of Earth’s atmosphere as a sort

In today’s electronic do-it-yourself (DIY) environment, ham radio remains one of the best ways for people to learn about electronics, physics, meteorology, and numerous other scientific disciplines, and is a huge asset to any community during disasters if the standard communication infrastructure goes down.”

Members of BARS will be participating in the national Amateur Radio Field Day exercise, a 24-hour exercise beginning at 1 p.m. June 24 and concluding June 25 at Meyer Park, 279 W Briarcliff, Bolingbrook.

This event is open to the public and all are encouraged to attend.

Since 1933, ham radio operators across North America have established temporary ham radio stations in public locations during Field Day to showcase the science and skill of amateur radio. More than 35,000 people from thousands of locations participated in Field Day in 2016.

“It’s easy for anyone to pick up a computer or smartphone, connect to the Internet and communicate, with no knowledge of how the devices function or connect to each other,” said Kutzko. “But if there’s an interruption of service or you’re out of range of a cell tower, you have no way to communicate. Ham radio functions completely independent of the Internet or cell phone infrastructure, can interface with tablets or smartphones, and can be set up almost anywhere in minutes. That’s the beauty of amateur radio during a communications outage.”

Hageman explains that BARS members are trained in emergency preparedness and are ready to act and assist Bolingbrook first responders in the event of a disaster.

BARS offers courses to become certified with FEMA and become FCC approved.

“We are able to go out there, set up and communicate to as many people are possible right on the spot,” sad Hageman. “People don’t often realize what happens if signals are lost. We saw that in events like Hurricane Katrina where ham radio was vital.”

However, it’s not just about coming through in an emergency, it’s also about social interaction and fun. For Hageman, who grew up in the days before cell phones, talking with someone from across the world on a radio was not an everyday occurrence.

“I was 16 when I got my license and I was a science nerd who loved math and electronics. Back then to communicate with Europe was a big deal and I was doing it on a ham radio. It was quite a thrill,” said Hageman.

Anyone may become a licensed amateur radio operator. There are more than 725,000 licensed hams in the United States, as young as five and as old as 100.

The Bolingbrook Amateur Radio Society meets at 7:30 p.m. on the third Monday of each month.

Meetings are held at Fire Station #5 which is located at 1900 Rodeo Drive, Bolingbrook. Everyone is welcome to attend the meetings.

Martinez group among elite Kiwanis Builders Clubs in the world The Builders Club at Martinez Middle School is one of only two clubs in Illinois to receive the Distinguished Club Award from Kiwanis International.

The award, based on service projects, service hours, club attendance, leadership and community service, was issued to only 39 out of approximately 1,600 Kiwanis Builders Clubs worldwide “(Martinez faculty adviser) Tim Czajowkski and his club go above and beyond,” said Bolingbrook-Romeoville Kiwanian Holly Butenhoff, who oversees all five Valley View School District 365U middle school Builders Clubs. “He has a great group of kids every year but this year’s group really went the extra mile.”

Among their group’s projects during the school year: Volunteering every other Tuesday night at the Senior Star Memory Care Unit; volunteering at Ready Set Ride; volunteering at Heritage Woods Assisted Living Home; collecting supplies for U.S. troops; volunteering at several Romeoville elementary schools-assisting with reading, math, STEM, carnival nights; meeting with Irene

King Student Council members; helping with Kiwanis peanut days; and volunteering at Feed My Starving Children.

VVSD school-level teams focus on creating a culture of student success More than 150 Valley View School District 365U educators set their sights squarely on continuous improvement at this week’s VVSD Summer Leadership Academy, embracing the S.M.A.R.T. Learning Systems mantra designed to build capacity for student-centered, goal-directed learning.

Ever since VVSD began a Strategic Plan “refresh” three years ago, the state’s 8th largest school district has been diligently working toward the point where teachers and administrators from each school work together to truly impact student learning in each of their own schools in measurable ways.

“We now have the power to maximize the great things we’re already doing,” VVSD Assistant Superintendent Rachel Kinder told the gathering. “It’s through strength in numbers that we have the ability to be a school system, not a system of separate

schools going in different directions.”

“It’s been awe inspiring to see what this district has done to prepare the system for this,” said Anne Conzemius, president and Co-founder of Wisconsin-based S.M.A.R.T. Learning Systems, LLC. “This isn’t something that just happened. It has been done strategically so that it aligns with everything Valley View is trying to do.”

The SMART School Improvement Process began for VVSD several years ago with the training of a District Level Team. This week’s activities focused on Building Impact Teams. Those teams will take what they learned back to soon-to-be-formed Department/Grade Level/Program Impact Teams.

Each training level involves a number of steps, including determining the “Greatest Area of Need” (GAN) which then leads to a search for effective practices and ultimately to identification of applicable professional learning. The Process is a continuous improvement loop aimed at increasing learning for both adults and students in the system.

“Each of you holds a piece of the puzzle,” Kinder told Summer Leadership Academy attendees. “You are a critical component.

Through our shared efforts, we have the ability to maximize the impact on all of our learners.”

“This is an all-in approach, a learning-bydoing model,” Conzemius added. “We call this working smarter, not harder. It takes a little longer, but that planning will turn into results more quickly.”

VVSD Superintendent James A. Mitchem Jr. called the S.M.A.R.T School Improvement Process “a road map for school improvement second to none,” adding “In my many years of education, this is without a doubt the most important training I’ve been through and the most beneficial. I’m very excited about the possibilities for this district because of the significant impact it will have on the growth and achievement of our children.”

Application period for VVSD’s paid bus transportation begins July 5 The Valley View School District 365U Transportation Department will accept applications for the district’s paid transportation program for the 2017-2018 school year from July 5 to 31.

Under the paid program, a limited amount of space is available on buses for students who live under 1.5 miles from their attendance center. Seating is limited and will be provided on a first-come, firstserved basis.

Open, available seating on existing bus routes is the primary factor in determining if paid ridership is available for purchase.

Downers Grove North’s Swanson leads 2017 Voyager Media All-Area Soccer Team

There was a time not long ago when Abby Swanson wasn’t thinking about becoming an All-State soccer player.

All she wanted to do was be able to play the sport again.

The Downers Grove North midfielder suffered a torn ACL her freshman year and spent that season on the bench as the team manager.

“My world flipped over a little bit, my soccer world at least,” Swanson said. “I didn’t know what I was going to be coming back.”

Swanson is one of the best players in the state and she is just scratching the surface of her potential. She followed up a solid sophomore season by leading the Trojans in goals and assists, part of a larger group effort that sparked Downers North to the greatest season in school history.

Swanson tallied 13 goals and 18 assists and led the Trojans to a school-record 20 wins and a fourth-place showing in the Class 3A state tournament. Oh, yes, she also was the first Trojan in more than 15 years to be named AllState.

For those efforts, Swanson is the Voyager Media Girls Soccer Player of the Year.

“She’s a soccer player,” Downers North coach Brian Papa said.

“She loves the game. If I could ever get her to relax and quit beating herself up, she’s going to be one helluva soccer player because she’s got the instincts that you want in a leader.

“Right now she’s a junior. Once she learns composure, there’s no stopping her. That’s what I’m teaching her.”

SOCCER FROM PAGE 9 year, taught all of his players to aim high. That was helpful even to a player the caliber of Swanson, who surprised herself by earning a starting spot as a sophomore.

“To be starting already sophomore year was kind of crazy,” Swanson said. “So for me I was like, ‘I made it back,’ and that (level) was what I thought (my ceiling) was.

“But over this past year I went into club and I wanted to keep getting better, so (becoming All-State) was a personal goal for this season and it happened, so it was pretty cool.”

A lot happened for the Trojans this year and Swanson was a major catalyst. They earned the No. 1 seed in their own sectional and avenged one of their two regularseason defeats when they beat Lyons 2-1 on penalty kicks in the final.

Swanson likely saved the season when she tied the game on a penalty kick with 14:58 left in the second half, then converted the clinching penalty kick in the shootout.

That gave the Trojans their first sectional title, but Swanson wasn’t done. She was one of five players to make penalty kicks during a 1-0 supersectional upset of traditional power Naperville North, a team that had 10 Division I players.

“I think she brings an intensity that we really need,” Downers North junior goalkeeper Grace Stevenson said. “Sometimes we just kind of need her and she’s able to step in and be like, ‘Hey, guys, we need to come out hard this half, we need to step it up.’

“I think she really helps build up the energy on the field.”

There is a lot of energy in Swanson, particularly in her powerful right leg, which can launch hard shots from 40 yards out or more. Papa is constantly trying to get the unselfish Swanson to shoot more and pass less when she sees an opening.

“That’s been a focus from the coaches to me is to kind of keep getting my head up and look for the shot,” Swanson said. “I tend to pass a lot and spread the wealth a little bit.

“But I need to take my chances too because we just need the ball in the back of the net, one way or the other. I wish it was easy.”

Succeeding like the Trojans did this season is not easy. The program had one only one regional title before this year and the fourthplace trophy is North’s first piece of hardware.

“It’s playing a sport that you love with your best friends,” Swanson said. “How much better can it get than that?”

How much better can Swanson get? The honors student already has committed to Loyola, but she won’t rest on her laurels with one more high school season left.

“I’m so excited,” Swanson said.

“I’ve been talking to (the Loyola) coaches and that will be the next challenge and adventure. I’m going to stay hungry.”

HAILEY ARLIS, MINOOKA Senior forward tallied 19 goals and led the Indians to their first conference championship in 36 years. The four-year starter was a three-sport athlete, also starring in golf and basketball.

MEGAN BREIER PLANFIELD NORTH Senior forward had a teamleading 18 goals and 16 assists. Will play for Ohio Northern. “Megan has outstanding speed and ability with the ball at her feet, which makes her very difficult to defend,” Plainfield North coach Jane Crowe said. “She often draws two or three defenders at a time and still manages to get to the goal.”

OLIVIA BULL DOWNERS NORTH Junior defender was Honorable Mention All-Sectional selection.

Had five assists and scored the game-winning goal in sectional semifinal victory over York.

SHANNON COUGHLIN PLAINFIELD EAST Senior forward scored in 16 of 22 games this year and finished with 29 goals and eight assists. AllSouthwest Prairie honoree.

ERIN FLYNN, BENET Versatile junior had two goals and a team-leading nine assists while playing forward and fullback. All-Sectional and All-East Suburban Catholic pick.

ERIN GRAEFEN PLAINFIELD CENTRAL Senior forward had 10 goals and five assists. “Erin is fantastic technically, tactically, and in the air which enables her to play any central position at an extremely high level,” Planfield Central coach Ken Schoen said.

KATIE GESIOR, BENET Senior midfielder was a four-

year starter who had 12 goals and eight assists this season to earn AllSectional and All-East Suburban Catholic Conference honoree.

JAMIE HANSEN LOCKPORT Senior defender was a two-time All-Stater and four-time Southwest Prairie selection. Had one goal and two assists this season and 10 goals and 11 assists for her career.

“Jamie has great speed, size, touch and an ability to read plays before they happen,” Lockport coach Todd Elkei said. “She has been the anchor of our defense for the past four years.”

JULIA LENTZ BOLINGBROOK Junior goalkeeper had a 0.54 goals-against average and five

shutouts. Has verbally committed to Northern Illinois. “Julia has saved over 800 shots in her three years at the varsity level,” Bolingbrook coach Matthew Kocourek said.

She is a very dynamic player that other teams have a hard time dealing with.”

State’s Attorney to host blood drive June 22 Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow is partnering with Heartland Blood Centers and local mom Jennifer Babec to host the Taylor Babec Community Blood Drive from 7:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 22.

The Taylor Babec Community Blood Drive will be held in the parking lot directly south of the former First Midwest Bank building at 25 N. Ottawa Street in downtown Joliet. The building currently is home to the Will County Children’s Advocacy Center and Will County Specialty Courts, both of which are operated by the State’s Attorney’s Office. Heartland’s mobile coaches will be parked inside the middle lot during the Blood Drive.

partment, all of which are less than one block from the blood drive.

Noak proclaims ‘Amazon Day’ Mayor John Noak proclaimed June 8, 2017 as Amazon. com Day in Romeoville In September, Amazon opened a 750,000 square foot fulfillment center in Romeoville, employing more than 1,000 people.

This week, they had their official grand opening, with a warm reception by state, county, and village officials alike. The Grand Opening highlighted all Amazon facilities recently built within Will County.

At a board meeting earlier in the week, Romeoville Mayor John Noak proclaimed June 8, 2017 as Amazon.com Day in Romeoville.

“Amazon has had a tremendous impact on not only Romeoville, but the region as well,” said Noak.

“They’ve added hundreds of jobs with competitive pay and great benefits. In addition, they are a great community partner, from getting involved in community events this summer to volunteering their time. We’re thrilled to have them here.”

Amazon.com is the largest internet based retailer in the world by total sales and market capitalization.

Garden Walk to benefit pediatric program Timmy’s Hugs and Heart Garden Walk to take place on June 24 Daisies symbolize innocence, gladiolus strength, and geraniums comfort.

These flowers may be seen at the featured gardens of Joliet Area Community Hospice’s annual Timmy’s Hugs and Heart Garden Walk. Now in its 11th year, this self-guided garden tour was initiated by John and Betsy Sullivan in memory of their grandson who was in hospice and palliative care from the time he was 10 months old until he died at 11 years old in 2012.

Avid gardeners themselves, the Sullivans are still the primary organizers of this event which benefits the pediatric program of Joliet Area Community Hospice (JACH).

JACH is one of just a few hospice organizations in the area to

provide pediatric hospice and palliative care program.

The pediatric program serves terminally ill children ages 0-21.

It provides unique, individualized care for every child so they can live peacefully and in comfort along with care and support for their entire family.

The pediatric palliative care program provides comprehensive and specialized care for children coping with a life limiting illness who are undergoing curative treatments for their disease.

While you visit the nine gardens in Plainfield, Shorewood, Channahon, Joliet and New Lenox, you will see climbing roses, hostas, peonies, and day lilies nestled among beautiful ponds, pergolas and garden art.

Enjoy the beauty of the gardens, find ideas for your own yards and appreciate what the flowers may be telling you all while supporting the pediatric program of Joliet Area Community Hospice.

Time frame for buying a leased building DEAR DAVE, I’ve operated my own small business for a couple of years. In that time, I’ve been leasing the building that houses my company. How do you know when the time is right to buy a place and stop leasing?

JAMES DEAR JAMES, I’m a big fan of leasing the first few years after starting your own business. It’s even better if you can work out of your home, but I understand that’s not always practical.

In my mind, you should only buy a building when you have a good idea what your building needs will be from a solid track record. Growth is a good thing, but in some cases you may want to hold off buying a building if you’re growing too rapidly. Don’t make the mistake of focusing too much on real estate and not enough on generating revenue and managing your growth intelligently. You would also want to make sure you’re going to be in anything you buy for a while, because you don’t want to be stuck with a residual value. A residual value is the remaining value of an asset after it has been fully depreciated.

In the first three to five years of starting your business, you should lease. After that, you can choose to lease with an option to buy or, in the right situation, buy a building — debt-free, of course.

have been generous enough to pay for most of my school expenses, and they let me live at home while I complete my degree. Still, I’m trying to figure out how to move out and continue working, while continuing my studies full time and attending career-related events. We live in an area where the cost of living is high, so I’m not sure how to handle all the facets of this situation.

JOEL DEAR JOEL, I think out of three things – school, work, and where you live – you need to decide which is your number one priority. If it were me, school would come first.

In order to go to school without borrowing money, you’re going to have to work. Getting out of school on time, and attending some of the events that will take you toward your career, will preempt work. You’ll have to work enough to pay for things, but if you can finish school and hit your academic and graduation goals while staying at home a little bit longer, that’s a pretty good deal.

It’s a nice thing your parents are offering, but I can understand your desire to be out on your own.
