Step back in time at Rendezvous 34th annual “Island Rendezvous” planned for June 10 in Romeoville

See first hand how fur traders traveled the canal, right in the community’s backyard, some hundreds of years ago.

Live re-enactors will portray life during the 18th century French fur trade era, in what has become one of Will County’s Forest Preserve District oldest event.

Come learn through hands-on activities how that time period compares to modern life at the 34th annual “Island Rendezvous” June 10 in Romeoville. The free event is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Isle a la Cache Museum,

501 E. 135th St. (Romeo Road) in Romeoville.

The event will feature a petting zoo, archery instruction and an activity that teaches you how to start a fire with nothing but wood.

Organizers report children will be able to test themselves on the skills needed to be fur traders. And there will be a historic camp and a modern camp for kids to play in so they can see the contrast between the 1700s and the modern era.

The Rendezvous event has been updated in recent years to feature more hands-on activities, said Chris Gutmann, facility supervisor for Isle a la Cache.

“The emphasis is on familyoriented interactive stations,” Gut-

mann said. “Every year we add a new element or two to keep the event fresh. We want people to enjoy themselves, have fun, try something a little different and learn something along the way.”

Past Island Rendezvous programs were more about watching, but the revamped program is more about participating.

“New this year will be a station that allows visitors to try their hand at building a survival shelter out of sticks,” Gutmann said. “Also, when visitors are ready to cool off in the air conditioned museum, there is the new interactive animal tracks table exhibit for them to try.”

The “Make Tracks” table encourages children to make animal tracks in putty with molds of animal paw prints. The 15 animals highlighted in the exhibit are those

that were in “Illinois Country” back in the 1700s. The table also includes information on the beaver, which was the most important creature in the French fur trade era because beaver pelts were prized above all others at the time.

Returning this year will be Redhawk’s longhouse, a replica longhouse that will represent the type of structure Native Americans might have lived in at the time.

And a mainstay at the rendezvous, are the Forest Preserve’s Volunteer Brigade of re-enactors who are on hand with living history demonstrations derived from the voyageur era including bread baking, lead ball molding, a presentation of period firearms, a fashion show and a farming demonstration.

Willowbrook Wildlife Center will present two birds of prey programs

in the Traders Cabin. Seating is limited. Tickets will be available at the museum front desk on the day of the event on a first-come, firstserved basis.

Crafts, games, live music and storytellers will top off the celebration.

All of the activities will take place at Isle a la Cache, which is located on a small island in the Des Plaines River. Indoor facilities are accessible and outdoor activities will take place on level paths or on natural surfaces across uneven terrain.

Based on similar events the district hosts, the event, depending on the weather, could see 800 to 1,000 people at this year’s Island Rendezvous. Island Rendezvous is one of the longest-running programs that the Forest Preserve District of Will County offers, beginning in 1984, it has been held every year since.

Free lunch will be offered at BHS from 11 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday from June 5 to July 25. New this year is a VVSD Nutrition Services program called VVSD Mobile Meals that will bring free meals for children into the community. Free lunch will be offered Monday through Friday June 5 to Aug. 11 (except for July 4) at the following locations: Bolingbrook—11-11:20 a.m. at the Annerino Center, 11:30 a.m.12:20 p.m. at the BRAC, 12:30-1 p.m. at Bulldog Park and 12:45-1:15 p.m. at Fountaindale Library.

Romeoville: 11-11:20 a.m. at Conservation Park, 11:30-11:50 a.m. at the Romeoville Recreation Center, 11:30-noon Irene King Elementary School and noon to 12:20 p.m. Boucher Prairie Park.

Any child under the age of 18 wishing to partake in the free summer meal program in VVSD schools should go to the main office (Door 1) at any of the sites. The meal must be eaten on-site.

No portion of the meal may leave the site, per Illinois State Board of Education regulation.

Summer library programs in VVSD schools begin next week Led by the Wood View Elementary School Gears for Engineers Reading Club, Valley View School District 365U schools will conduct a wide variety of summer library programs this summer.

Wood View’s club, which will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. every Tuesday (except July 4) through Aug. 8, will focus on the new Wood View Makerspace. Students will not only be able to check out books, but will also be able to participate in a variety of technology-related activities.

Jonas Salk Elementary School’s drop-in summer library program will feature a variety of themes from 9 a.m. to noon every Wednesday (except July 5) through Aug. 2.

The Fountaindale Library will provided stories and a puppet show on June 21 and Aug. 2, while therapy dogs will visit July 19.

BHS K-8 Raiders Baseball Skills Camp set for June 26-30 Bolingbrook High School’s baseball program has scheduled a Summer Skills Camp for youngsters currently in kindergarten through 8th grade.

The camp will run from noon to 2 p.m. June 26-30 at the varsity baseball field. Varsity Head Coach Scott Thyer and his Raiders Baseball Skills Camp crew will work on team defense, pitching, catching, hitting, and base running. Scrimmages will also take place.

Participants should bring all necessary baseball equipment and wear a baseball uniform.

Fugitive arrested outside Bolingbrook home Arrest stems from a probation violation arrest warrant issued Feb. 21 in Lake County Dvino E. Thomas, 31, was apprehended by members of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Warrants Team and U.S. Marshals Service outside his Bolingbrook home May 25.

The arrest stems from a failure to appear/probation violation arrest warrant issued Feb. 21 for Thomas.

In August 2016, Thomas plead guilty to one count of aggravated battery resulting in great bodily harm, was sentenced to 30 months of probation, 77 days in Lake County jail and 100 hours of

public service for his role in a December 2015 attack in incorporated Spring Grove. He was originally charged with aggravated kidnapping and aggravated battery.

Following the issuance of the Lake County warrant, members of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Warrants Team along with members of the USMS-GLRFTF began apprehension efforts. Thomas would frequently switch vehicles and stay overnight at different locations, in an apparent effort to avoid apprehension.

On May 24, members of the sheriff’s warrants team located Thomas driving a vehicle in the area of South Ashland Avenue and West 43rd Street, Chicago. Warrants deputies attempted to stop him, however Thomas fled in the vehicle and avoided apprehension.

On May 25, warrants deputies developed information indicating Thomas was at his Bolingbrook address. Members of the sheriff’s warrants team along with the USMS-GLRFTF located and successfully apprehended Thomas outside of his residence.

Thomas remains held at the Lake County Jail on the failure to appear warrant.

Sheriff Mark Curran said, “Often, locating wanted individuals proves to be difficult, as many with warrants attempt to hide and avoid apprehension. This is another example of our warrants deputies working diligently to apprehend a wanted fugitive.”

Sheriff Curran reminds the public the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Dig in and organize your gardening tools Here are some clever and quirky alternatives that may be new to you It goes without saying that any job is easier if you have the right tools. It’s also important to take proper care of your tools. At this time of year, this especially relates to your gardening tools.

What makes working in your North 40 most enjoyable is not only having the right rakes, clippers and spades, but also having them organized and easily accessible – this applies to both storing and using them.

As you’re probably already familiar with the traditional pegboards and store-bought tool caddies, here are some clever and quirky alternatives that may be new to you: STORING LONG-HANDLED TOOLS Recycle a wooden pallet into a new storage space for your long-handled tools. By fastening the pallet flat against your garage or shed wall, shovels, hoes and edgers will easily slip behind the slats and stand upright, organized and accessible. Or try drilling handle-diameter holes into the lid of a 50-gallon resin trash can. The round container with tools at the ready fits perfectly in any out-of-the-way corner. Another

unique solution is to turn a tall furniture crate into a self-contained storage unit for your long-handle garden tools.

Affix a few rows of tension-style broom racks to the inside and you’ve created the perfect garden tool closet.

KEEPING HAND TOOLS IN ORDER Find a rural-type mailbox large enough to house your smaller hand tools. This is a great way to keep your shears, trowels and claws from going missing. How about converting a hanging pocket shoe storage unit into one that holds your hand tools? Just nail the multi-pocket organizer to an interior wall to keep your small tools out of the elements and accessible.

Another idea is to convert the utensil basket of your discarded dishwasher into a small hand tool organizer – it not only contains your tools, but also can travel with you around your garden.

CARTING GARDEN TOOLS AROUND A hands-free way to carry your small gardening tools from tool shed to tomato patch is by holstering them in an old leather tool belt. Additional rope loops can be added to accommodate extra tools. You might also try strapping a large plastic garbage can to a dolly to transport your long-handle tools from plot to plot. This keeps

them organized and within reach at all times. On par with that idea is recycling your old golf bag and cart into a long-handle tool caddy. What a classic and creative way to drive gardening tools out to your fabulous north FORE-ty.

CARING FOR GARDEN TOOLS Clean all mud and dirt from your tools before putting them away so the moisture they hold won’t cause rust.

Apply linseed oil regularly to extend the life of wooden handles –it will protect them from moisture and prevent them from cracking.

Former USF women’s basketball coach Quigley-Smith and staff head to Lewis University

How does a program in the Joliet area replace a coach with bloodlines to one of the top athletic families in Will County?

With another one, that’s how.

Lewis University announced welcomed Samantha QuigleySmith as the 13th head women’s basketball coach in school-history last week.

She replaces Kristen Gillespie, who accepted the head job at Illinois State University after only two seasons at Lewis.

Quigley comes to Lewis from the University of St. Francis, where she posted a record of 10162 in five seasons on the bench.

Last year, the Saints posted a 34-2 record and were undefeated in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference. St. Francis advanced to the NAIA Division II

semifinals.

Quigley-Smith was named the CCAC Coach of the Year for a second-consecutive season. She was also selected as the Illinois Basketball Coach Association Coach of the Year and was a WBCA/United States Marine Corps NAIA National Coach of the Year finalist.

“I am really excited to be here,” Quigley-Smith said. “I have to thank my family, it wasn’t an easy decision the last couple weeks, but it is great to be here. I have to thank St. Francis, who gave me my start at the ripe age of 23 years old. I was grateful to have that opportunity to coach and be a head coach at such a young age. I have to thank Lewis and the search committee. I know they had some really great candidates and to choose me, I am really lucky.

Ex-Spartans Pulliam, Miranda are All-Americans The NCAA DII Outdoor Track and Field Championships came to a close Saturday (May 27), Lewis University women’s track and field finished tied for 62nd with two points.

Amanda Farrough (South Bend, Ind./Clay) who ran the 5000 meter finished eighth overall with a time of 16:37.34 earning All-American honors.

Phoenix Smallwood (Princeton, Ill./Princeton) earned an AllAmerican honor (second team) for the championships after scoring a mark of 12.52 meters in the triple jump placing twelfth.

Cierra Pulliam (Plainfield, Ill./ Romeoville) also competed in the triple jump earning a mark of 12.13 and finishing at 19th place.

At the conclusion of the championships the Flyers earned four total All-American honors, two first team and two second team.

• Saturday (May 27), Sergio Miranda (Romeoville, Ill./ Romeoville) of Lewis University men’s track and field completed the finals of the 800 meter run after qualifying in the preliminaries Friday.

Miranda finished the race in 1:50.40 which placed him fourth overall and earned him the title of All-American.

Thanks to his efforts Lewis earned five points and finished 46th for the meet.

BASEBALL The American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) announced on Wednesday (May 24) that Lewis University senior outfielder Brandon Collins (Tinley Park, Ill./Lincoln Way North) has been selected to the ABCA All-Midwest Region Second Team. The teams are voted on by members of the ABCA and the process is led by the ABCA NCAA Div. II All-America Committee.

Collins, who was named to the All-Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division First Team, is the first Flyer to be named to the ABCA All-Region Team since 2014 (Ben Albano).

“What a great and well deserved honor for Brandon,” Lewis head baseball coach Tim McDonough said. “I couldn’t be happier for him to be named to the All-Region Team.

“He has overcome so much adversity and injuries and to be recognized by the other coaches in the region is truly an honor for him.”

The Tinley Park, Ill., native led the Flyers in six different offensive categories in 2017 including batting average (.390), hits (60), doubles (12), slugging percentage (.578), on-base percentage (.424) and stolen bases (9). He was second on the squad with five home

runs and 28 RBI. Collins had a team-best 20 games with at least two or more hits and had seven games with multiple RBI. “Brandon meant so much to the program for the past four years and really had an unbelievable senior season,” McDonough continued. “He was our offensive leader and did a great job patrolling center field for us all year.

“We didn’t have the greatest team success this year and it is difficult for individuals to get personal awards when the team struggles,” McDonough continued.

“This honor is a testament to the type of player Brandon is and that the other coaches recognize just how good he was and how much he can impact a game with his bat, glove and speed.”

VOLLEYBALL The Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) announced on May 25 that Lewis University registered a conference-best 18 MIVA Academic All-Conference awards. That account for 81.8% (18-of-22) of the 2017 Lewis roster. To be eligible, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average following the Fall ‘16 semester.

“I’m proud of the way the guys performed in the classroom,” Lewis head men’s volleyball coach Dan Friend said.

This year was not the first time Quigley-Smith considered applying for the Lewis position.

“When coach Gillespie took the position at Illinois State, I jumped at the opportunity,” she said. “When the position opened two years ago, it was something I thought long and hard about, but the timing wasn’t so great. I felt like now was a good time and I was ready to accept the challenge.

“Not everyone goes to a crosstown rival, but the step up in division to NCAA Division II was big and to be able to be part of an athletic program that has been so successful.”

While she said she has no plans to leave Lewis in the near future, Quigley-Smith said that the idea that the last two Lewis coaches moved on to Division-I jobs was intriguing.

“I would be crazy to say that it wasn’t in the back of my head, but our family is really established in the area and we are not looking to go anywhere anytime soon,” she said. “It does speak volumes about the program that they are producing coaches that are having great success and they are leading coaches to the highest level there is.”

That desire to some day coach at the Division I level is a reason St. Francis AD Dave Laketa knew Quigley-Smith would not be a Saint forever.

“We are grateful to Samantha for the work that she did to turn our women’s basketball program into one of the top-caliber programs at the NAIA level,” Laketa said in a statement. “It has been extremely fun to watch her develop over these past five years, culminating with this year’s undefeated regular-season record and a trip to the semifinals of the NAIA National Tournament.

“I know that this was a very difficult decision for Samantha to make with her and her family’s ties to St. Francis, but one that I know will serve her well along her career path. We were glad to give Samantha her first head coaching opportunity and know that she will do well for many years to come.”

She went on to play for Doug Bruno at DePaul, where she played from 2006-11. She left as No. 20 on the all-time scoring list with 1,273 and was third with 484 assists.

She was a two-time All-Big East selection and was named an Honorable Mention WBCA All-American in 2011 and a finalist for the Nancy Lieberman Award as a senior. The same season, Quigley Smith earned Capital One Academic All-District honors and was the recipient of the Big East Sportsmanship Award.

Quigley-Smith will not be coming to Lewis alone, as she looks to bring her entire USF staff to Lewis with her, including former Joliet Catholic boys coach and 1974 Lewis graduate Dan McCarthy.

“My intention is to bring everyone over and hopefully everything works with logistics and our graduate assistant getting some credits transferred over, but it looks like everything will work out,” she said. “Dan McCarthy was a huge part for our success and he is a big reason why I am the coach I am today, so I had to have him come over.”

The staff will inherit a team that advanced to the NCAA Regional Tournament for the fifth-straight season and is paced by 2017 Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Year Jessica Kelliher.

The Flyers will play at St. Francis in December.

Will County Sheriff’s Office recognizes ‘Best of the Best’ Will County Sheriff Mike Kelley recognized 36 members of the department for going above and beyond their normal duties at last night’s annual Awards Banquet held at the Jacob Henry Mansion, Joliet.

Over 125 people were in attendance including award recipients, their families, co-workers, and elected officials.

Sheriff Kelley also read the names of the nine staff members who have honorably served the department for 20 years and the two members who have served over 25

years. Fifteen staff have also retired in the past year and some were in attendance to be recognized.

Other awards included fourteen Life Saving Awards, a Meritorious Service, four Distinguished Service, three Civilian Service Awards, two Supervisory Excellence Awards, and the Auxiliary Deputy of the Year and Auxiliary Supervisor of the Year. Joliet Police Detective Tizoc Landeros was presented with an Appreciation Award for his assistance to the Sheriff’s Investigation Division in securing a confession from a homicide suspect.

The evening was culminated by awards given to Julie Murnane, Telecommunicator of the Year; Kathleen Zacharias, Civilian of the Year; Correctional Sergeant Adrienne Knazze, Correctional Supervisor of the Year, Correctional Deputy of the Year, Jerry Outlaw; Supervisor of the Year, Lt. Steve Talmontas, and Deputy of the Year, Jeff Jerz.

Sheriff Kelley stated, “I could not be more proud to be a part of this department. This event highlights the best of the best police department around. It is a pleasure and an honor to recognize these fine men and women for their exemplary achievements and continued efforts in improving the Sheriff’s Office and in keeping our citizens safe.”

Keeping a mortgage for the deduction is bad math DEAR DAVE, My wife and I are looking at buying a new home. We’ve been really blessed with our finances, and we’re at a point where we can pay cash for a new house and still have plenty of money in the bank.

Should we do this, or is it a better idea to get a mortgage for the tax deduction?

BRIAN DEAR BRIAN, I think the real question is this: Why wouldn’t you pay cash if you have the ability to do so? I would never advise someone to get, or keep, a mortgage just for the tax deduction, because these tax deductions are never 100 percent.

Let’s pretend you had a $200,000 mortgage at five percent interest.

That would be $10,000 a year in interest. If you take a $10,000 tax deduction and you’re in a 25 percent tax bracket, that would save you 25 percent of $10,000 on your tax bill — or $2,500. So, you would never send $10,000 to your mortgage company just to avoid sending $2,500 to the IRS. You don’t keep a mortgage just for the tax deduction. That’s trading a dollar for a quarter, and you don’t want to do that. Everybody thinks los-

ing the tax deduction is an awful thing, but you could give $10,000 extra to your church — something you don’t have to be in debt to do — and get the same tax write-off.

There are numerous positive aspects to staying out of debt.

One big thing it does is change your risk level. It gives you a level of peace and security you’ll never have when debt is hanging over your head. All that money that was going out the door to the bank can be used to build wealth and give like never before!

—DAVE DEAR DAVE, I paid off my house a little over a year ago, and I’m completely debt-free. That’s a good thing, because I recently had some large

medical bills and I don’t have quite as much cash as usual on hand. My younger sister recently received a tax bill from the IRS for $30,000. I love her to death, but she’s extremely irresponsible with money and in debt up to her eyeballs. I know how you feel about debt, and I’ve tried to teach her how to handle money, but considering her situation — should I take out a home equity loan of $30,000 to help her?

TONI DEAR TONI, Absolutely not! Does that mean you don’t love her and care about her? It does not. But you told me she won’t behave with money. You don’t give money to people who won’t behave with the stuff. That kind of behavior doesn’t help anyone, and it doesn’t fix the problem.
