Annual 5K celebrates ‘Supermanny’ Race proceeds help children with physical impairments and disabilities

In a grassroots effort that began four years ago, the ATI Foundation SuperHero Shuffle 5K, powered

by Manny’s Mission, has grown to one of the largest races in the area, with proceeds supporting the courageous heroes who battle various villainous diseases.

In started with one Romeoville family determined to make others believe there is hope after trauma. In 2012, Manny Bueno (SuperManny) was born four weeks premature, with significant brain damage. His is a story of defying the odds. Though told by doctors he would likely not survive, his parents refused to believe there was nothing to be done. Following various surgeries and treatments, it

was after a visit to his chiropractor that a miraculous change began.

With the simple idea that if he was deprived of oxygen, why not give him oxygen; Manny began Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in which 100 percent oxygen is pressurized into an MRI-like chamber for various amounts of time and various depths depending on purpose.

However such treatments weren’t covered by insurance. Each therapy session costs approximately $175. Manny required 80 before his first birthday.

It was after preparing for a 5K race with her friends that the idea struck mom Holly Lotz to host one of her own, having participants show up to support, walk and run for those who would give anything to walk.

With no prior race organization knowledge or work experience,

she started talking to people about how she could set an event up. With community support and a partnership with ATI Foundation behind her, the event took off. The first event drew more than 500 attendees. Within two years of hosting the event, she was able to raise enough for the much-needed therapy as well as raise funds for other families who face similar situations.

In 2016, 1,200 people attended Manny’s Mission 5K, raising $40,000 for children with physical impairments and disabilities. SuperManny was one of four who received a donation check at the start line to help offset expenses not covered by insurance companies and other bills.

This year’s event, showcasing the Year of the Villain, is Sunday, May 7, kicking off at 900 W. Romeo Road.

The Superkids Miler ($15) will begin at 8 a.m.; the 9 a.m. timed 5K ($40) will start at 9 a.m. Registration on the day of race is available.

as well, though villain costumes are the theme. Manny’s Mission is dedicated to educate the community each year on a different “villain” disability or illness. This year, white

hope ribbons, bringing awareness to scoliosis, blindness, and bone cancer are on display.

‘Starchild’ authors speaks to students

Author/ illustrator tells Brooks students to “start with simple choices”

Life is full of choices. What matters is what you do with those choices.

That’s what comic book illustrator, author and publisher James A. Owen told Brooks students during a visit to the Bolingbrook middle school Tuesday.

“If you’re not happy with the way your life is going, stop and think about it. Slow down,” he said. “Ask yourself how do I make my life simpler? If you start with simpler choices, then you can make bigger and bigger choices.”

The author of the “Starchild” comic book series and the book “Here, There be Dragons” detailed his journey through life that included a car accident that injured his drawing hand just as he was launching his comic book company.

“Everybody said it was over,” Owen said. “But I am a believer that every once in a while the

While he was rehabbing his injured hand, Owen said he utilized his left hand and sought help from other illustrators to finish his comic book.

“When you make hard choices like that, people find ways to help you,” he said, urging Brooks students to “find ways to help each other…ways to elevate people who are struggling.”

He challenged the students to “live deliberately.”

“Decide…are you the kind of person who makes things happen or the kind of person things happen to?” he said. “Never sacrifice what you want the most for what you want the most at that moment.”

Students also had an opportunity to learn about research conducted by other high school students from around the state, learn about how the Smart Grid and Smart Meters work, tour the mammal and bird research specimen collection, hear from scientists working in different fields of science, and meet with a recent RHS grad (David Mancol, a computer science major at ISU) about his experiences in college.

The book tells Manny’s story: “Manny is a 4-year-old boy with Cerebral Palsy. He cannot speak or walk, but he can dream. In his mind he is not ‘broken.’ This is his story.”

All ages and all capabilities are encouraged to be a part of the giant community-wide event and fundraiser and to dress as their as their favorite superhero or supervillain while shuffling through the streets of Romeoville to show off

the pride and support for people of all abilities.

There will be raffles, DJ, free parking, free photo booth, and more.

College opportunities key for special needs students

BY DANIEL SMROKOWSKI My friend Chloe Young, 18, of Warrenville, stands in the middle of an ice rink at Seven Bridges Ice Arena in Woodridge as her figure skating lesson takes place this past week. She sports a brown headband with sparkles, a blue skirt, ice skates, and a light blue fleece jacket with the words “U.S. Figure Skating” embroidered on the upper left of the jacket.

Chloe was diagnosed with Williams syndrome at three weeks of age; doctors said that she was not going to make it.

Williams syndrome is a deletion of the first copy of the gene #7. Chloe defied her doctors’ expectations by rising to become a figure skating champion, soonto-be high school graduate firmly on the road to a higher education. To her proud parents, Jennifer and Marcus Farmer, Chloe is their “little miracle and star,” her mom proclaimed.

This is the time to celebrate the accomplishments of those with Williams syndrome and other intellectual disabilities.

It is time to educate our communities about how to accept and include those of us with special needs in college and in career planning.

Families of students with special needs have a passion for their child to be included and accepted by their peers without disabilities. Often times, those of us with special needs are excluded from certain activities within the community or in a regular education classroom.

“Our passion for inclusion was that Chloe wasn’t always included, so that’s where it started for us,” said Jennifer.

Chloe’s parents had always given her all the extracurricular opportunities that any other child could receive such as competing in figure skating or cheerleading.

One afternoon in the eighth grade, Chloe came home and sat her parents down for “the talk.”

“I want to go to college,” said Chloe.

And, that dream then became her mother Jennifer’s new research project.

Jennifer searched for the various programs that offered support for students with special needs in college. Thankfully there were many programs that are now available. Jennifer had to research the cost, where they were located, and what Chloe would need to accomplish in high school. Many students with disabilities have an Individual Education Plan (I.E.P.) that helps special education teachers, school, and parents to know how to best help the student in school and for the future. There are many special education

By Daniel Smrokowski teachers that care and want the best for their students but they may not always know what the student wants for their future.

“I don’t think that in an I.E.P. situation it’s always what the school wants,” said Jennifer. “I think it’s what the student wants and that’s what should drive everything.”

Similar to Chloe, my special education teachers did not necessarily believe that college was the right choice for me.

When I was in high school, my parents and I spent lots of time in I.E.P. meetings encouraging my case managers to include me on the education track for college. In 2012, I earned my degree in journalism from Roosevelt University.

Even now that 10 years have passed since I was a high school senior, as Chloe is today, there might still be special education teachers unconvinced to put our college dreams first.

Today, more and more special education teachers take into account what the student wants. In doing so, this gives those of us with disabilities equal opportunity to achieve a higher education.

During Chloe’s college visits, there was one university that she very quickly chose as her No. 1 school of choice— Vanderbilt University. Located in Nashville, Tennessee, Vanderbilt is rated as #15 in the nation and, according to Chloe’s mom, Jennifer, has a history of inclusion within the “Next Steps” program that Chloe will be a part of. “Next Steps” is a program for students with intellectual disabilities providing them with an individual program of study in the areas of academics, social skills, and vocational training.

“I wanted [Chloe to] go somewhere they’ve done inclusion and they’ve done it well,” said Jennifer. “What Vanderbilt offers people with Williams [syndrome] is amazing.”

Chloe and her parents looked at other university campuses, including South Carolina and the University of Tennessee but the high quality level of inclusion that Vanderbilt brings to their students with intellectual differences was the perfect

match for Chloe. During a “trial day” at Vanderbilt, Chloe had an opportunity to sit in on classes to see what a typical college day was like. It was then that Chloe and her parents saw an amazing poster in front of the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center. It was a poster showcasing a little boy with a cowboy hat who had Williams syndrome. Jennifer explained how the university does a tremendous amount of research and even offers a music camp.

Come fall 2017, Chloe will be a pioneer as Vanderbilt’s newest freshman. She will be the first person with Williams syndrome to be a student at Vanderbilt and actually be living on campus. Chloe loves studying science and hopes to have a career in this field. Jennifer says Chloe’s love for studying science has made college a default option for furthering her education.

“Training in college will lend itself to a career as opposed to a job,” said Jennifer.

One of the reasons why Chloe chose Vanderbilt was she wanted a school that had a study abroad program and also football so that she could hangout with friends and “tailgate,” as Chloe excitedly told me. According to the Williams Syndrome Association, people with Williams syndrome are extremely social and friendly. Chloe will have no problem making friends when she begins her collegiate studies.

Many of us with special needs, like Chloe and myself, want to be included in college. The number of universities today that have disability programs is on the rise. Today, many higher-level institutions are able to bring inclusion into their college classrooms. We want to have the same pathway to have a career as our peers without disabilities.

Many students with special needs want “to be included in classes instead of rejected from classes,” said Chloe.

Homeschooled hoopsters win title

While everyone knows about the Bolingbrook Raiders run to the Class 4A state finals and third-place finish, there was another Bolingbrook product earning hardware on the hardwood.

Meet Immanuel Adams, a homeschooled 16-year-old who played basketball for the Illinois CRU, a homeschool program affiliated with Crossroads Christian Youth Center, an independent, non-denominational ministry that has served the needs of youth in Chicago’s West Suburbs for more than 40 years.

The Illinois CRU this season earned a divisional championship and had the opportunity to play for the undisputed national title.

“It was a good experience and I really enjoyed,” Adams said. “I had run track for CRU a couple years ago, but I had really never played basketball. My father played and I had shot around with friends at the gym, but I had never been on an actual team. Last year I decided to try out and see what it was. It was a really special opportunity for me.”

The Illinois CRU athletic program began around 25 years ago as a way for homeschooled

students to fulfill the physical education requirement of their educational curriculum.

What started simply as gym class quickly evolved into a unique opportunity for homeschool families and athletes to participate in competitive sports as a state-recognized, non-traditional school.

The Illinois CRU program has grown significantly and offers competitive opportunities for youth in basketball, baseball, football, volleyball, soccer and track.

The Illinois CRU competes in the National Christian Homeschool Championships and has provided a platform to give exposure to both male and female athletes that have gone on to compete at top Division I programs across the country including NCAA national champions Justin Jackson (University of North Carolina) and Moriah Jefferson (UConn and WNBA’s San Antonio Stars).

This season, CRU made it further than any team in the 23-year history of the program, earning a trip to the national tournament in Springfield, Missouri, where the Illinois CRU won the boys Class 5A title and were crowned champions for that division.

Chicagoland Speedway announces race sponsor

Chicagoland Speedway and Nickelodeon announced that the number-one entertainment brand for kids is the entitlement sponsor of the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race on Sunday, Sept. 17, dubbed the Tales of the Turtles 400 at Chicagoland Speedway.

The announcement was made atop the 360 Chicago Observation Deck by Chicagoland Speedway President, Scott Paddock and Nickelodeon Senior Vice President of Sports Marketing, Anthony DiCosmo.

“Following the success of last year’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 400, we are ecstatic to continue our relationship with Nickelodeon in 2017,” said Paddock. “This blend of exciting racing and family entertainment is

the perfect formula to launch the Playoffs for the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series kick off at our Magnificent Mile and a Half.”

This Sept. 14-17 marks the second partnership for Chicagoland Speedway and Nickelodeon, who last year partnered to bring fans the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 400. This is the seventh consecutive year Chicagoland Speedway will kick off the Playoffs for the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series.

“Our partnership with Chicagoland Speedway and NASCAR continues to build momentum and drive fan excitement,” said DiCosmo. “We’re thrilled to return to Chicago with the next installment in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series – the Tales of the Turtles – and create an action-packed weekend on and off the track for NASCAR and Turtles fans alike.”

During the Tales of the Turtles 400 race weekend, attendees will be able to enjoy fun family activities with appearances by the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles costumed characters and more.

Unlike a traditional school, the homeschooled athletes don’t have the opportunity to have classes together or bump into each other in the hallway.

So, Ellis made those opportunities happen.

“I am very aware of chemistry and camaraderie and being able to build a friendship outside of just being on the court together,” said head coach Linton Ellis.

“So, we tried as many times as we could this past season over to my house on a Saturday evening and we would have pizza and they would go out in the driveway and shoot around and laugh and joke and talk. That was probably the biggest difference between this year and the previous year, which was my first year as coach. We live in different places, but my house is within 40 minutes of everyone, so we met there.

“We talked some basketball and watched some film, but for the most part, I just wanted them to have fun and that really tightened the bond and that was one of the keys why were successful.”

Adams agreed that the bonding helped.

“I think we did well this year because we really enjoyed being together and hanging out and that helped us come together so we could have that mentality to compete for a national championship,” he said.

And as the Illinois CRU re-

turns all but one player next season, a repeat is already being discussed.

“We are going to work hard this offseason,” Adams said.

Excessive giving can become debt DEAR DAVE, My wife and I are debt-free except for our home, and we’re on Baby Steps 4 and 5. Recently, we were asked to make a large donation to a charity we already support.

We don’t have the full cash amount they asked for on hand, and after hearing that, they said we could make monthly installment payments until the donation amount was paid in full. We’re hesitant to do this because it seems a bit like debt to us. What do you think?

BEN DEAR BEN, Well, it’s not debt. There would be no repercussions, other than guilt, if you couldn’t make the full donation. So, it’s not debt. To be honest though, I don’t engage in that kind of stuff when it comes to giving.

My wife and I do all our giving — except for our tithe to our local church — through our family foundation. Sometimes we’ll do this giving in a couple of installments, but it’s not because we don’t have the money. It’s generally a situation where we’re walking with the charity or ministry throughout the year, and we’re observing and assessing

the need.

I’d be hesitant to give a gift when I don’t have the money. Most of the time, approaches like this fall under the heading of manipulation. You’re being pushed beyond your means.

Most giving of this type, biblically speaking, would be from surplus.

And right now, you don’t have the surplus.

DEAR DAVE, I am 18 years old and homeschooled. I want to continue my education this fall, and my dad works at a college near our home.

I would get free tuition, but there’s another college farther from home that I like just as much — but it’s more expensive. On the plus side, it is a Christian school, and my faith is important to me. What do you think I should do?

BRADEN DEAR BRADEN, Free tuition is a major plus in my book. At the same time, I can understand your desire to get out from under mom and dad’s wings a little bit. Just don’t make the mistake of thinking that a school, church or anything else is completely Chris-

tian. You’ll meet some of the wildest characters ever at a Christian school, just like you would at a public university. However, you would have the advantage of a built-in spiritual support network.

All things considered, and since you mentioned your faith specifically, I’d probably choose the Christian school. But I wouldn’t go into debt to make it happen.
