National Nurses Week calls attention to shortage Illinois expected to have shortage of more than 21,000 nurses by 2020

Local colleges encourage students to pursue a career in nursing as a nursing shortage continues.

As the industry sees a surge in nurses reaching retirement age, there have been nearly 800 job postings for registered nurses in Will County alone in the past year.

The nation recently celebrated National Nurses Week May 6 through 12 and area colleges spoke of the increased need for nurses in the area, celebrating a critical profession that undoubtedly impacts every community.

“The average age of the current nurse is 57 and we are seeing many reach the age bracket for retirement, leaving jobs in great numbers,” said Rasmussen College Nursing Dean Holly Janssen. “That number is expected to grow by 19 percent by 2022.”

In addition, as the baby boomer generation grows older, the demands this generation will place on the healthcare system will also increase.

By the year 2020, it is estimated that in Illinois there will be a shortage of more than 21,000 nurses. To address this concern, the state has also created the Illinois Center for Nursing, looking to identify and provide the resources necessary to recruit and train more highly-skilled nurses in Illinois.

Rasmussen College Romeoville/ Joliet campus is seeing growing numbers in its nursing program as is Lewis University.

“I would encourage people to pursue nursing because the work is fulfilling and the salary is competitive,” said Janssen.

She said those that excel are those that do well in math and science and have a balance of soft skills as well.

Lewis University recently expanded its program to include its Doctor of Nursing Practice program, DNP. The College of Nursing and Health Professions offers bachelor’s and master’s programs accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.

To meet the growing significant trend, in 2014, Lewis University began a 24,000 square-foot expansion of the College of Nursing and Health Professions facilities to include new state-of-the-art simulation labs, high fidelity simulated mannequins, a viewing room to provide an opportunity for faculty to observe student performance, four classrooms, additional faculty offices, conference rooms, several student gathering spaces and a café.

To date, all of Rasmussen’s nursing students have found employment.

“Our students are continually getting placed,” said Janssen.

“And our enrollment is gradually increasing.”

Will County and local public safety officials have been grappling with a state mandate that requires the county to eliminate half of its six 911 dispatch centers.

The state legislation passed in May 2015 was meant to improve public safety by streamlining operations and potentially reducing the number of call transfers between facilities, or public safety answering points.

The new law requires Will County’s Emergency Telephone System Board to submit a plan

by July 1 that outlines how the consolidation, which must be completed by July 1, 2017, would occur.

For months, local agencies have been discussing the best possibilities and locations for its dispatch centers.

Bolingbrook Public Safety Director Tom Ross explained the rationale, saying the Joliet 911 dispatch would remain because it is the county’s busiest center.

The second PSAP would be Wescom – a newly built center with 21 member police and fire agencies primarily on the western side of Will County, including Bolingbrook, Plainfield, Lockport and Crest Hill.

Finally, the plan calls for a third new center that would combine agencies on the east side of the county.

Wescom Executive Director Steve Rauter said the issue of building a new center dates back to the initial plan and study for a new center on Caton Farm Road.

The facility would have mirrored the Wescom footprint but was never carried out.

Will County Chief of Staff Nick Palmer said the plan was far too

expensive and was never scaled back.

Meanwhile, the county is currently working on plans to construct a new sheriff’s department law enforcement facility at its Laraway Campus.

Last month, the county announced its offer to include a dispatch center for those who were working on how and where to build the third center, including Eastcom in Crete, Lincolnway in Frankfort, the Will County Sheriff’s Department and the Romeoville 911 Center.

While those PSAPs that would join what is now being called the Lincoln Way Communication Center would not have to pay construction costs, they would be responsible for ongoing operational costs.

County leaders had thought the plan would help avoid endless debates over where the new facility will be located and keep construction costs lower.

“By building a new, modern dispatch center on the county’s Laraway Road campus, we can improve public safety, become more efficient and realize long term savings for Will County taxpayers,” said County Speaker Jim Moustis when announcing the plan.

The county wasn’t expecting the backlash it received.

Backlash and double tax Although those agencies looking for a new home as part of the state mandate approved of the plan, those that previously joined Wescom and are footing the bill for the 2014 construction of the building are crying foul.

Wescom built its new facility in Plainfield at $5.1 million with the buy in from member agencies, which are now responsible for nearly $275,000 in debt and make

up 44 percent of the Will County population, according to Ross.

The county explained that the Laraway campus building is being paid for with Regional Transportation Authority sales tax dollars – the same taxes used to build county roads.

“That’s nice and in the spirit of collaboration, the problem is it doesn’t help Wescom,” said Ross.

“What about us? Everyone in the county pays RTA taxes, plus we have to pay off the bond debt for the Wescom building.

Rauter said Wescom applauds the county for helping 911 centers but feels as if Wescom is being punished for being the leader, adding that he is just calling for a conversation on equality with the county.

However, Palmer stated that life isn’t always fair and said everyone pays RTA taxes, including individuals who pass through Will County.

He added that it would have been nice if a conversation had happened before the resolutions came out.

“This is just counterproductive and is just not a road we want to go down,” Palmer said. “What if we start calculating percentages

getting free construction; that’s where the rub is. We feel the county has to do what is fair; it’s not fair to the residents.”

Ross said using RTA sales tax dollars puts Bolingbrook and other Wescom member residents at a disadvantage, essentially these residents are paying RTA taxes – 0.25 percent in sales tax on anything bought in the county – plus village taxes to cover the bond debt. This, according to Ross, creates the unfair advantage.

“Perception is reality,” he said.

“When half of the county feels it’s unfair, then it’s unfair.”

However, Romeoville officials are on board with the plan.

Frustrated with the state mandate that is requiring the village to move its services, which it recently invested more than $2 million in to, officials welcome an opportunity to not only benefit from the dispatch center but the possibility of board leadership, employee transfer, and a voice in its construction and best practices.

“We have done extensive analysis for this situation and it has

Bolingbrook, Wilmington, and the Homer and Minooka fire departments, with others pending, recently filed an opposing resolution stating that the county’s plan is severely misguided and unfair. Other agency members are now considering passing a similar resolution, calling on the county to revisit the plan and create a more equitable solution.

“We all have infrastructure and we know that this builds bridges and roads, but we are just calling on the county to sit down at the table and work out something that is fair and equitable for all those that are involved,” said Ross. “We are just saying that we need to take another look at this; it’s inherently unfair. Intentions were good, but I think there has been an oversight and this wasn’t thought all the way through.”

Safety First In addition, Rauter calls into question the true meaning of consolidating the 911 dispatch centers in the first place.

Looking at efficiency, he stated that having agencies like Romeoville move to Laraway wouldn’t cut down the number of call transfers but could increase the number.

Yet, Romeoville Police Chief Mark Turvey completely disagrees and believes the move would increase safety for its residents.

Rauter said seven of its Wescom agencies border Romeoville, essentially making it less likely to transfer a call repeatedly due to familiarity of the territory.

“It would just make more sense to have everything under one roof,” said Rauter.

But, Turvey said new technology and the fact that the majority of calls are coming off of cell towers means that calls can be answered easier, and Romeoville would benefit from the consolidation with the Will County Sheriff’s Department.

“This is an endless argument,” Palmer said. “This is one of those cases where we have to agree to disagree. There is no plan to stop this project.”

Palmer reiterated that the final cost isn’t locked in stone and that the agencies are not getting a building completely for free, noting operational costs, percentages per agency and possibly capital costs.

“No one seems to acknowledge that this new center will actually provide a benefit for Wescom and can act as a back up to their system, as well,” he added.

Palmer said when you compare the size of the proposed building – the total complex is 90,000 square feet – with the dispatch center utilizing only 15,000 square feet, the building would be nearly 90 percent county occupied.

The design stage is about 50 percent complete, with hopes of breaking ground in late summer or early fall and completed by 2017.

In the end, Palmer said he hopes everyone involved can see the big picture, where in essence, once all centers are consolidated, all agencies will see some savings.

“It is just not a strong argument that there would be a reduction in call transfers,” said Turvey. “In fact, we believe the number of calls being transferred would be reduced if we move to Laraway. We know it. It will not decrease, it will increase safety.”

Manley’s legislation to protect consumers becomes law Manley supported House Bill 1260, which would amend the Personal Protection Act With information constantly being shared through different media, state Rep. Natalie Manley, D-Joliet, had made it a priority to ensure that constituents’ sensitive

information remains private.

“People are entitled to their privacy, especially when it concerns their sensitive information, such as medical records and social security numbers,” Manley said. “Of course with how technology has been advancing and how information is being shared, data breaches have occurred more often than not and it is important that we are doing more to protect them from the fallout of such instances.”

Manley supported House Bill 1260, which would amend the Personal Protection Act by expanding what is constituted as private information and what data collectors are required to do in case of a breach in their system. The bill would ensure that faster action be taken by the data collectors to inform people who have been affected by the breach and the process on how the Attorney General’s Office become involved.

The bill passed both the House and Senate with no opposition.

It became law May 13 when the Governor approved it.

“This legislation is important to protecting citizens due to breaches that occur with data collectors and allows them to stay informed on what is happening,” Manley said.

“People deserve to be in the loop and this law will make a difference in protection one’s information from further harm.”

Department begins swimming facility inspections Environmental health personnel inspect all recreational venues

Will County’s 133 public swimming facilities and 12 bathing beaches traditionally open for business during Memorial Day weekend, and the Will County Health Department said it will begin inspections to ensure each venue is ready.

Will County Environmental Health personnel currently inspect each local recreational water venue to ensure compliance

with the Illinois Swimming Facility Act and code. The state inspection form for public pools lists 80 items requiring attention, and the inspection for every local beach facility includes 42 items.

Although the state requires just one annual inspection, provisions of theWill County Public Swimming Facility Ordinance authorize additional visits designed to ensure health and safety. Outdoor public pools are typically inspected by the health department monthly and are evaluated with the help of a 24-item inspection form.

Indoor water facilities are inspected at least once every 60 days during warmer weather and

monthly once temperatures begin to drop. Beaches are inspected at least twice monthly during summer.

Will County sanitarians spent 685 work hours inspecting public pools, spas, wading pools, water slides, spray pads and lazy river facilities during 2015, according to the health department. Those numbers included 322 follow-up inspections to make sure that any problems found during initial site visits were corrected.

The department said staff spent more than 70 additional work hours on beach inspections and sampling. Staff collected 186 beach water samples for bacteriological

analysis, but the amount of inspection time devoted to each facility hinges on several factors.

“Facilities with multiple features, like lazy rivers, water slides and spas, require additional inspection time,” the department’s administrative services director, Elizabeth Bilotta, said. “Each feature warrants its own inspection. We visit all 133 area facilities regularly, but those locations include 225 features that must be inspected. The program requires lots of staff time, but it’s worth the investment because it helps to reduce the potential for recreational water illnesses and injury too.”

Bolingbrook Woman charged with sexual assault of High School student Bugle Staff A 28-year-old Bolingbrook woman who was working as a substitute teacher’s aide at a Villa Park high school has been arrested on charges of criminal sexual assault of a 16-year-old student.

The Willowbrook High School student told a school officer that they had sexual contact with Elyse V. Snyder at her home, according to the Bolingbrook Police Department.

Bolingbrook police said the incidents reportedly occurred at the teacher aide’s residence, and that the victim and the offender admitted to having consensual sex on two occasions in April 2016.

Snyder has been charged with three counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault – a Class 1 felony – and two counts of criminal sexual abuse – a Class 2 felony.

Snyder has been transported and is currently being held in the Will County Adult Detention Facility.

General Assembly approves $700 million to human services agencies Senate Bill 2038 would allocate funds to local government and nonprofit agencies Bugle Staff The Illinois Senate and House of Representatives approved legislation last week that would provide $700 million in funding to human service agencies throughout the state.

Senate Bill 2038 would allocate funds to local government and nonprofit agencies that provide services such as mental health care, drug addiction treatment and home-delivered meals for seniors.

The House passed the bill 1110-3, while the Senate voted 55-0 to pass the measure.

“Just like we did with emergency funding for higher education a few weeks ago, this is another example of Republicans and Democrats working together to identify available revenue to provide a temporary lifeline through the end of this fiscal year,” Rep. Ron Sandack. R-Downers Grove, said in a news release.

Despite being approved by the House and Senate, SB 2038 still awaits Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner’s signature.

State Sen. Pat McGuire, D-Joliet, is a co-sponsor of the legislation.

He also called the bill an example of bipartisan cooperation, but stressed that there is still work to do.

“Just as with recent funding for higher education, Democrats and Republicans came together,” McGuire said. “But just as with the higher education measure, this human services measure provides less than half of what the General Assembly one year ago authorized the governor to devote to helping people. We must keep working.”

If signed into law, SB 2038 would allocate $248 million to the Department of Human Services, $243.5 million to the Department of Aging, $170.5 million to the Department of Revenue, $18 million to the Department of Public Health,

$9.1 million to the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority, $5.4 million for Department of Healthcare and Family Services, $1.3 million to the Department of MIlitary Affairs, $458,000 to the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, and $343,500 to the Department of Transportation.

“I eagerly voted for this measure because the services involved are extremely important and should be taken out of negotiations, as we try to embark upon reforms that will make our government better serviceable to its people,” Rep. Mark Batinick, R-Plainfield, said.

State Sen. Jennifer BertinoTarrant, D-Shorewood, said the stopgap measure is a step in the right direction to providing programs for seniors, the disabled, the homeless and people being treated for addiction with needed aid.

“But, it doesn’t include all of the state dollars our human service agencies were anticipating and should receive,” she said. “More has got to be done, and I will continue pushing for a complete human services budget.”

As of May 16, the governor had not given the bill his final approval.

When reading Robert Frost’s classic poem “The Road Not Taken,” it’s tempting to see only one simple message in his words. As Frost comes to a fork in his path, he chooses the one that appears less worn, less chosen by others.

Doing so, in his own view, makes all the difference.

Readers tend to see this as an ode to going your own way, which is important.

At the same time, it is equally important that the author is making a choice at all, in large part because he must; the path has forced his hand. From the place where the roads of life diverge, we can all choose the new path we will take.

Making changes is hard. As I’ve mentioned in previous columns, there is a typical series of stages that we all encounter on our way to lasting change, beginning with the point where we aren’t thinking about it or we just don’t want to do it, and culminating in a permanent lifestyle alteration. To get to the other side of the change hurdle, remember there’s many ways from here to there.

When others can relate to the struggles we experience, they tend to offer advice that mirrors what they did in a similar situation. Despite their good intentions, our friends and loved ones might be setting up a vicious game called “Why don’t you? / Yeah, but…” that never ends well. This game starts with a seemingly helpful suggestion, such as “Why don’t you start running every day” in response to a person expressing their desire to lose weight. The reply then comes back, “Yeah, but my knees are bad and I don’t have good shoes.” More ideas are piled on in search of the key that will fit the situation. After a few more rounds of this, both people grow frustrated, nothing has changed and there are no winners.

But, all is not lost. We can take a cue from Malcolm Gladwell, an author and cultural observer who looks for unique stories that contain hidden truths about our lives. One of his stories involves Howard Moscowitz – one of the most influential market researchers in the food industry.

Moscowitz was once hired by spaghetti sauce manufacturer Prego to determine the ideal sauce for consumers because they were losing market share to Ragu.

What Moscowitz discovered is that there is no such thing as one perfect sauce – a conclusion identical to what he reported to Pepsi years earlier when asked to identify the perfect level of soda sweetness.

What Prego and Pepsi hoped to discover was the one magical formula that could please everyone. However, the reality was more complicated.

Rather than one sauce to meet the tastes of millions of people, there needs to be many different sauces and even more different flavors of soda.

So how does that help any of us, aside from filling local store shelves with dozens of choices?

What it means is that when we are dealing with turning points, life transitions and other challenges, there are many possible pathways.

Small changes tend to snowball into larger changes. Even a slight shift in our daily routine can produce significant changes in mood and behavior.

Secondly, whereas Robert Frost doubted that he would ever return to the same point in the road, we ourselves often face similar difficulties repeatedly, and that’s OK. If what we tried before didn’t work, we have 19 or more other solutions to try.

Finally, as lonely as the journey might seem at times, we are all in good company. The fears, hopes, dreams and joys of life are universal; shared by all of the travelers on a road together.

The Valley View School District has fielded several successful female track and field athletes in the past and for Romeoville and Bolingbrook, they are hoping that success carries over to this season.

Combined, the Spartans and Raiders will send six events to this weekend’s IHSA Class 3A state track and field meet in O’Brien Stadium on the campus of Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

The track events started off nicely for the teams as both of the Valley View 400-meter relay teams advanced to the state meet as Romeoville placed third in a time of 49.10 seconds and Bolingbrook placed fourth in 49.40.

Romeoville’s squad was made up of Katie Kerwin, Jahnetta Jones, Nia Lee and Kaniyah Rush, while Bolingbrook’s quartet was Claire Young, Karah Evans, Kayla Perry and Kayla Walters.

“I felt really good about the race,”

Perry said. “I think we could have done a little better, but it was good enough to advance. We have come a long way with our handoffs and our chemistry and I am really proud of us.”

The Spartans are sending the 800 relay squad as well, as it placed fourth in 1 minute, 45.27 seconds.

That foursome was made up of Kerwin, Jones, Rush and Kiara Carter.

“This feel really good,” Kerwin said. “We have worked really hard to get here and we have put our best effort into this, so I think we deserve it. It feels a lot better having more events at state because we can represent more as a team rather than individuals and we can show how hard we work as a whole team.”

In both events, the Spartans finished outside of the automatic qualifiers, which go to the top two places, so they had to hit the state standard – something the team is proud of.

Siblings Skye and Brittany Osborne have played together on two varsity sports the past two seasons

Siblings playing together on a high school varsity sports team is not at all uncommon.

Siblings playing on two sports together at a large school – that is uncommon – except that is, in Romeoville.

Sisters Skye and Brittany Osborne have had that unique experience this season, playing basketball and softball on the same teams this season.

“I love being around her, it will be hard to leave, but it has been great to be able to have that connection and play on the team together at the varsity level for two sports,” said Skye, a senior, who will play softball next season at Judson University in Elgin. “She is my best friend and this has been a wonderful opportunity.

We push each other and make sure we work hard all the time.

We are very competitive. We played together all when we were younger and my dad has coached us forever.”

For Brittany, a sophomore, making the varsity team in either sport took work, but it was a challenge she was up for, especially with the help of her sister.

“I have played travel since I was eight years old and she always pushes me to do better because she wanted to play with and she pushed me to make that higher level,” Brittany said. “We see each other all the time, but we have a really great connection, so playing sports together and being around each other is great.”

Softball coach Christina Douglas, has a special understanding of the bond between the two Osborne sisters.

“Myself being a twin and playing with my sister, I know you always compete,” Douglas said. “You compete in a non aggressive way, but you always strive to be better than each other and you push each other.

“This is their second year playing together on the high school team and I coached them both on the lower levels. This is a sport that they both strive at and like to compete. It is good to have that support system when you need it.”

The sisters also played together for the past two seasons on the basketball floor, although Brittany didn’t see a lot of floor time as a freshman, but coach Julio Carrasco knew how special it was to have them both on the roster.

“They are a pleasure to coach,” he said. “You are so accustomed to brotherly and sisterly rivalries, but with them, it is all about team. That is something that is very, very different. They care more about the team and care more about each other.

They want to see each other succeed. There is no animosity.

They are great athletes and great competitors and they are a pleasure to coach.

“If there was a game that Brit was having a good game that

might mean Skye is sitting, but she is cheering her on and vice versa. You can see that they are sisters and that they love each other, but that competitiveness that they show is far and above what drives them. I’m sure coach Douglas would agree that these girls will run through a brick wall for us.”

Carrasco said the attitude the Osborne sisters came into Romeoville with is one that started at home.

“Their parents are phenomenal,” he said. “I have known them for many years and the parents do a nice job of not saying, ‘oh, coach is being mean to you,’ and they understand the kids have to be pushed.

Skye told me this year during the season that she knows I am pushing her and that she appreciates it. That is something not a lot of kids will say. A lot of kids will run home to mommy and say, ‘coach is yelling at me.’

They know that this is a way of driving them and they have succeeded on the softball field and on the basketball court.”

Ex-Spartan Miranda won 2 races at Dr. Keller Invitational Lewis University junior Sergio Miranda (Romeoville, Ill./ Romeoville) won two races and set three NCAA Provisional marks to lead the Flyer men’s track and field team at the Dr. Keeler Invitational, hosted by North Central College, on Friday (May 13) at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium.

Miranda was victorious in the 1,500-meter run (3:49.28) and placed third in the 800-meter run (1:49.86). He also ran a leg of the first place and NCAA Provisional setting 4x400 relay (3:13.07) that included seniors Andre Barnes (Mount Prospect, Ill./Prospect),

The motivation was easy, however, for the Spartans because no one has taken them as a threat.

“Everyone has this stereotype that Romeoville is just not good,” Jones said. “So, we proved ourselves.

We already knew we had it, we just needed to push ourselves to get where we wanted to go. This is just amazing.”

Not only did Lee help the 400 relay advance, she advanced individually in the long jump with a leap of 17feet, 7.75-inches and in the triple jump, as she placed second with a leap of 36-11.50.

“I had my personal best in both events,” Lee said. “So that felt good. I just want to run on that blue track in an orange uniform and I knew I had to do it.”

Lee’s advancement in the triple jump makes it three straight seasons the Spartans have a triple jumper, but before the season, that may not have been the case.

“Triple jump is my favorite event and it is kind of crazy because this is my first season doing it,” the junior said. “My coach thought I should try it, so I went with it. It was easier than I thought it would be to learn. At first, I was a little scared it would hurt my knee or my foot because it looks hard, but it came fast to me and I am going to state and this is great. Now, I have another year to improve on it.”

Dear Dave, I’ve had a judgment filed against me for an old, unpaid medical bill. The original amount was $2,500, but now it has increased to $3,200. Can I negotiate this with the lawyer?

I’ve asked him for a detailed statement of the account several times, but all I’ve gotten is a payment booklet.

Bill Dear Bill, When it comes to paying off bills or debt, you should always pay what’s owed if you have the money. There’s a moral, as well as legal, responsibility involved.

The reason you haven’t gotten what you’ve asked for so far is you may have been talking to some low-level staffer or paralegal. If you have been talking directly to the lawyer, then he’s probably running a small debt collections or debt lawsuit machine. That means you’re just one of dozens of widgets coming down the line.

Bolingbrook High School choirs lends hand to classmate battling cancer Bolingbrook High School choir members will hold a concert for fellow students May 19 to benefit BHS freshman Jonathan Johnson who has been battling cancer since December.

Attendees will have the option of donating to a fund set up to help the Johnson family with medical costs.

In addition, according to BHS Director of Choirs Lawrence Fisher, the BHS choir members hope to raise additional donations by bringing their beautiful voices to the streets of the Promenade of Bolingbrook in the near future.

Johnson is recovering from a successful bone marrow transplant at the University of Chicago’s Comers Children’s Hospital on April 29 but must spend the next eight weeks in the hospital.

His sister, Jada, who will graduate from BHS on June 4 and will pursue a degree in medical research at Benedictine University, served as a bone marrow donor

for her brother.

A “Johnathan Johnson Fights Cancer Fund” is being set up through the Bolingbrook branch of the Great Lakes Credit Union.

Details on the fund will be forthcoming.

Tibbott’s Little Free Library opens Tibbott Elementary School formally unveiled its new Little Free Library during ribbon cutting ceremonies May 13.

Made possible by a grant from the R.R. Donnelley Foundation with assistance from the Geometry in Construction class at Romeoville High School, the structure is located near the Bolingbrook school’s edible garden.

The Little Free Library got its start in Wisconsin in 2009 when Todd Bol built a model of a one room schoolhouse as a tribute to his

mother, a former school teacher who loved reading. He filled it with books and put it on a post in his front yard with a sign that said FREE BOOKS. Today there are hundreds of Little Free Libraries around the world.

Tibbott Library Media Center Director Erin Preder and Principal Ana Wilson sent a grant application to the Donnelley Foundation, hoping the Foundation’s love for, and support of, literacy projects would bring funds to launch the Little Free Library.

Donnelley contributed $1,000.

Upon the suggestion of VVSD Assistant Superintendent Rachel Kinder, Tibbott asked Jim Egizio’s Geometry in Construction class at RHS to build the Little Free Library.

Wilson’s daughter, an extremely accomplished artist, added her touch to the project by creating a butterfly-themed design for the outside of the Little Free Library.

Business owner tells RHS students to ‘dress respectfully’ for job interviews Potential employers pay close attention to how someone dresses for a job interview.

That’s what Romeoville business owner Lourdes “Lou” Aguirre told Romeoville High School juniors and seniors May 12 during a visit arranged through the Romeoville Chamber of Commerce Education Committee.

“How you dress tells me what you think about yourself,” said Aguirre. “If you are respectful of yourself, you’ll be respectful of clients.”

The owner of Lou’s Styling place urged students to dress simply, but neatly.

That means no flip flops, yoga pants, shorts, tattered pants or short skirts.

“You don’t have to spend a million dollars on an outfit,” she said.
