Restaurant redevelopment planned Several restaurants will be taking root throughout the area

Several restaurants will be taking root throughout the Bolingbrook area, with plans to demolish the old

and bring in the new.

The first of its kind in the area, Slim Chickens, is planned for 246 S. Weber Road; the site of the former La Hacienda restaurant which has been vacant for some time. That building is set to be demolished

and two different buildings are to be constructed on the site. Phase I includes, the fast-casual Slim Chickens restaurant. Started in Arkansas, they are in the fresh, madeto-order tenders market; described as the place for fresh tenders, wings, salads, and wraps with a dose of southern hospitality.

“We have done very well in communities and wanted to expand in Illinois, and in Bolingbrook,” said Slim Chickens representative Dave Harris, “We have a family friendly, clean cut environment; a place to have dinner with your neighbor. We have good food and a good mix of 19 different sauces.”

Restaurants typically seats about 100 people and is similar to The Patio in service: customers order at the counter and then the food is brought to them. The group expects to hire approximately 70 people. The company has 63 locations, three currently in Illinois in Bloomington, Champaign and East Peoria.

Demolition is expected in May, with completion estimated for September. Phase II of the project will include a second building for retail; no prospects have been indicated as of yet.

In another two-building proposed development, additional

restaurants will be constructed in the outlots of the Meijer parking lot at 740-750 Janes Avenue. In a planned development for the 1.5 acres in front of the store, a Chipotle and Mexican Grill, and a MOD pizza, described as Chipotle version of Italian, where customers picka-dough and ingredients and it is cooked to order, will be constructed. Site development is planned to begin shortly.

Phase II will include a multi-tenant retail building. The developer explained Meijer typically has large parking lots and is looking to utilize the space better and to bring more retail and additional customers into the area.

Built in the 1970s, the McDonalds at 100 N. Bolingbrook Drive, the corner of Briarcliff and Route 53 will be torn down and rebuilt. A more modern and efficient design will allow for the restaurant to have dual drive-thru lanes which is expected to help alleviate traffic congestion in that shopping plaza. The configuration of the building would be altered from its current state, facing Briarcliff, with the drive thru along Route 53 and the Playplace off toward the shopping center. Demolition is expected for June 12 and construction of the new facility by September.

Tenants open at Uptown Square Subway recently opened foors, center fully leased

Tenants continue to fill Uptown Square, with its newest occupant a return customer.

Subway, which was a tenant previously before the redevelopment of the 9,400 square foot retail center at the corner of Route 53 and Alexander Circle, recently opened it doors.

The center is fully leased with BMO Harris Bank the anchor and Romeoville Dental also on the premise and former tenants of the shopping area.

T-Mobile and Mity Nails also are expected to occupy the space.

In addition, on the northwest corner of Route 53 and 135th Street, the Troutman and Dams Retail Development/Thorntons and Romeoville Express Car Wash are nearing completion.

The 10.7-acre retail development will support approximately 30,000 square-feet.

The Romeoville Express Car Wash will be next to the gas station on the lot immediately north of Thorntons.

Metra is coming; work begins on Romeoville station New stop along the Heritage Corridor Line

After years in the making, construction is beginning on the new Romeoville Metra station.

Mayor John Noak, U.S. Congressman Dan Lipinski, Will County Executive Larry Walsh, and Metra Executive Director/CEO Don Orseno officially broke ground on the Romeoville Metra Station, a new stop along the Heritage Corridor Line.

“Getting a Metra stop has been a village goal for a long time, so we’re very excited to break ground today,” said Noak. “Having another transportation link to the city will be a great benefit for residents as well as businesses.”

Located near the intersection of 135th Street and New Avenue, the Romeoville Station will be the first new stop on the Heritage Corridor since Metra’s creation in 1984 and the first new stop on any Chicagoland Metra line since 2011. Construction is to be completed in the fall of this year, giving Romeoville residents a direct connection to downtown Chicago just in time for the holiday season.

The new station initiative began in 2008, when one of Romeoville’s largest industrial residents, Citgo Petroleum Company, was about to expand and build a new plant. At the time, the village and the company struck a deal. In exchange for variances that allowed for an additional parking lot to be constructed across from the plant on 135th Street, Citgo offered to lease eight acres of land to the village for a long-sought Metra station. “Once completed, this new station will mean more people in Romeoville and the surrounding area will be able to spend less of their valuable time each day driving on congested roads or traveling to less convenient Metra stations,” said Lipinski.

“As the most senior member from Illinois on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and co-chair of the Congressional

Public Transit Caucus, I would like to thank Mayor John Noak, the Village of Romeoville, Will County Executive Larry Walsh, and Metra for their hard work on this important project.”

The project is estimated at $4.9 million dollars with more than $3.9 million of the funding through CMAP’s Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement (CMAQ) Grant. The Village of Romeoville was also fortunate to receive a supplemental grant from the Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program (ITEP) for pedestrian access from 135th St to the Station.

“We look forward to the day in the not-too-distant future when

we’ll be able to add ‘Romeoville’ to our system maps and to the list of communities served by Metra,” said Metra Executive Director/ CEO Don Orseno. “I would like to thank Mayor Noak and Romeoville for their persistence in seeing this project to fruition, and thank Congressman Lipinski for being a champion of public transportation and a friend to Metra and Romeoville.”

The first phase of the station will have 123 parking spaces and support an advanced parking system, which will allow commuters the option to pay for their spots from their mobile phones in addition to the traditional method.

Plan return from travels Make returning from vacation a little easier You’re probably pretty good at planning and organizing your vacations and other trips. But have you ever given thought to how to make the end of your trip just as organized as the beginning?

Having recently returned from a threeweek vacation with no access to electronics (it was heavenly!), I’ve recently put these tips into action myself. Following them not only helped me ease back into civilization, but has also left me in good shape for my next trip.

Unpack thoroughly.

Don’t be tempted to stash your suitcase in a corner and keep returning to it to retrieve items as you realize the things you need are still in there. Spend 15 minutes pulling everything out (be sure to check all the zippered compartments and pockets) and getting each item where it belongs – laundry in the hamper (or better yet, in the washer), toiletries in the bathroom (unless you keep them in your suitcase to be ready for the next trip),

Prepare for your next trip. Rather than doing a last-minute scramble to restock toiletries or repair a broken carryon wheel, make note of what you need to replenish or repair. Add items to your shopping list so you’re ready to roll when the next travel opportunity arises.

Update your packing list. Make note of items you wish you’d taken with you, as well as items you took but wish you hadn’t. For example, I wish I’d brought my long undies on a recent backpacking trip, but could have done with one less short-sleeved shirt.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR DEAR EDITOR, A beautiful uplifting song we sing on Sunday in our church is “We Believe” – that there is and should be only one foundation. Today, there is a broken and fractured generation. We have an abundant of hope that this can be repaired. WE BELIEVE. As a late senior, with many more seniors, there is strength of spirit, core values, and allegiance to our country and flag. During all of the wars many brave men and women died.

Some did come home with “physical” and “mental” scars. But, THEY BELIEVED. Our first heroes in Romeoville, were Leo Miller and Kyle Wright, and many more. They sacrificed their lives, but THEY BELIEVED. In our Village of Romeoville, we have “true grit” seniors made of iron. There is Mary and Jim and many more, that come out and help anytime there is a need. They are a true

legacy of “love and spirit”. They are a tribute to “true grit” people everywhere. THEY BELIEVE. We lost recently another pioneer in Romeoville, Marilyn Leary. She had been a beloved school driver for District 365u for many years. She had strength of character with “true grit”. SHE BELIEVED. Obstacles can be indifference in various ways. But, compassion, kindness, and hope should “stand up and go forth”.

Our “true grit” iron people, right here in Romeoville, now and long ago, have left a legacy that is needed in today’s world.

The path taken today is goodness and kindness for everyone. Diversity of gender, color, religion, etc., has been uplifted for the good of all. We leave a cornerstone and foundation, that is a life with a long faith. WE ALL BELIEVE. SHIRLEE J. PERGLER ROMEOVILLE

photos you still haven’t organized, but that’s no reason not to take a different approach going forward. At a minimum, tag your photos or make notes about them while your memories are still fresh. As vivid as the details may have been when you took the pictures, it’s amazing how quickly that information is forgotten.

Turn off your “on vacation” message. If you’ve recorded a phone message to tell callers you’re away, or set up an email auto-responder to let people know it will be a while before you respond to them, be sure to turn it off once you return. I cheat a bit by having my out-of-office messages indicate I’ll be gone a few days beyond my planned return date. That gives me a few days to get caught up on things and edit my photos. Oops, now my secret is out.

BUILT Spartan seniors leaving a legacy

When Romeoville soccer player Dominique Martinez was a freshman, opposing teams routinely expected to beat the Spartans easily.

They still do, but the wins don’t come as easily now. Some games they don’t come at all.

That’s because Martinez and fellow senior co-captains Allison Vitel, Gabi Chavez and Olivia De La Rosa have worked tirelessly over the past four seasons to build the program to a point where it now earns respect.

Romeoville (7-12-1) enjoyed its best record since 2006, the year before it joined the Southwest Prairie Conference. On March 27, the Spartans beat Joliet West 2-0 to record their first SPC win ever.

Is that something De La Rosa foresaw when she entered Romeoville?

“I did but it was very hard to see it with the way the upperclassmen were before,” De La Rosa said. “So I think our class kind of pushed for the better.”

That is an understatement. The

seniors have impressive resumes and all four may play college soccer.

De La Rosa, a forward, has signed with St. Francis, where she will study nursing. Vitel, a defender who has nine goals, will play at Joliet Junior College, while Chavez, a defender, plans to walk on at North Central. Martinez, who leads the team with 14 goals and 10 assists, could join Chavez unless she decides to walk on at IllinoisChicago.

“It’s extremely rare (to have that many play in college), so we’ve been blessed to have those four,” Romeoville coach Phil Wicyk said.

“It’s been a nice core.”

It is a core that hasn’t crumbled under the pressure of competing against better, more established schools in a soccer-rich area. While Romeoville is far from an elite team, progress has been tangible.

“We’ve improved considerably,” Wicyk said. “Before I took over we were a program that didn’t score in conference and now we’re able to compete and win our first SPC PHOTO BY MARK GREGORY

What led to the turnaround?

“Probably just the chemistry we’ve had,” De La Rosa said.

“We’ve all grown up together and we’ve always wanted to be better each and every year.

“I feel we have dedication and a constant will and heart to want it. We’re definitely putting our name on the map. We’re making people kind of do a double take on Romeoville.”

THURSDAY, MAY 18, 2017 | BUGLENEWSPAPERS.COM De La Rosa and fellow forward Martinez have played with each since they were in fifth grade and all four seniors started playing the sport well before that.

“The key is we’ve bonded with our teammates, trying to explain to them what it means to play the game because many of them don’t have as much experience as the others,” Martinez said. “From my perspective, I show them how to play the game and try to put it at their level. We let them learn from things.”

Vitel, the team’s sweeper who plays alongside Chavez, said the seniors demand more of the younger players than past leaders did.

“We’ve been driving to push everyone and be committed,” Vitel said. “This year we really pushed people to do their best and kept motivating them to keep going and not give up.”

The seniors are role models, not only because of their skill but the example they set by their work ethic and the camaraderie that comes

from playing together for many years.

“We played together in middle school,” said Vitel, who began playing when she was 6 and started travel ball in seventh grade. “You know where they want the ball and you know how they play, so once you play with them for a while, you know where they are going to be.”

Chavez, who wants to become a physical therapist, says the Spartans are pushovers no more.

“I think what has turned it around is our determination,” Chavez said. “Me and the three other seniors, we want to be the change in Romeoville and our whole mindset has changed as (previous) seniors have left and we’ve gotten older.

“We’re stronger, we’re faster and we’re better. It’s definitely a great feeling.”

The seniors will leave a huge hole in the lineup when they graduate, but they feel confident they have planted the seeds of success in the minds of younger players like freshman forward Azucena Gomez, who scored a goal in a 3-1 loss to Eisenhower and may succeed Martinez as the team’s top scoring threat.

“They are definitely looking up to us,” Chavez said. “Even our coaches are telling them we are the influences, so once we leave, they have big positions to fill.

“I’m definitely proud of what we’ve accomplished.”

While opponents may not have taken notice yet, the Spartans know a lot has changed.

“They still think that now, but we know what we need to do and we try to do that every time.

“It’s really an accomplishment.

It has shown that we’ve changed in the four years that I’ve been here.”

The change has not gone unnoticed by other Romeoville students.

“The guys used to (talk down to us), like ‘you suck,’ and things like that,” Chavez said before the Eisenhower game. “Today a guy was talking to me and he was like, ‘yesterday your game was pretty intense, I was really into it.’ That meant a lot.”

The efforts of the “Core Four” have meant a lot to Wicyk.

“You can’t thank them enough for what they’ve done for the program with leadership and guiding

this program to where it needs to be,” Wicyk said. “I think it’s just the beginning.

“When they come back they’ll see where this program is going to be and it’s pretty much all because of them.”

Romeoville defeated Bolingbrook 3-2 in overtime, coming back from a 2-0 defecit.

The Spartans tied the match in the final 40 seconds to send it into overtime.

Crowdfunding real estate horrible ‘shortcut’ I wouldn’t give someone money to buy real estate in a crowdfunding scenario DEAR DAVE, I’d like to get involved in real estate investing, but I don’t have a lot of cash at present. What do you think of the idea of crowdfunding as a way to invest in real estate?

ADAM DEAR ADAM, I’ve got a bunch of real estate, and I love it. But I wouldn’t go the crowdfunding route as a way to get started in real estate investing.

I wouldn’t give someone money to buy real estate in a crowdfunding scenario, either.

The late Beverly Sills had a great saying: “There are no shortcuts to anyplace worth going.” Investing in real estate is wonderful when you do it right. Get out of debt first, pay cash, and find great bargains.

When you get in a hurry, and do

dumb stuff like go into debt or get mixed up with partnerships in the process, real estate’s a horrible investment.

I admire your ambition, Adam.

But I would advise you to follow my lead on this one. You’ll be glad you did!

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, roughly one in three adults in the United States has high blood pressure. OPT FOR HEART-HEALTHY FOODS Instead of foods that are high in sodium, eat a diet that is rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins. Check labels before buying prepared foods at the grocery store, as many such foods are high in sodium.

LOOK FOR FOODS THAT CONTAIN PROBIOTICS Johns Hopkins Medicine notes that studies have linked foods that contain probiotics to healthy blood pressure. Probiotics are consumable live bacteria, and while

studies regarding the relationship between probiotics and blood pressure are ongoing, researchers believe probiotics may produce chemicals that, when absorbed in the blood stream, may activate receptors in the blood vessels to lower blood pressure.

LOSE WEIGHT

People with high blood pressure who are carrying a few extra pounds should know that research indicates extra weight can cause injury to the heart. Dropping those pounds, especially through physical activity that can boost heart health, can help men and women lower their blood pressure.
