Made-to-order pizza comes to east side

A new artisan-style pizza place will be celebrating its grand opening by giving back to the community. MOD Pizza, located at 750 Janes Ave, Bolingbrook will be hosting a grand opening at noon, Friday, May 18. The first 52 people in line will receive a free individual artisanstyle pizza or hand-tossed salad and MOD swag. In addition, known for its commitment to “doing good in the world,” MOD will be donating 100 percent of its pizza sales

on grand opening day to Generosity Feeds, which is an organization dedicated to reducing childhood hunger across the US. Generosity Feeds’ hearty, protein-filled meals will be distributed through food pantries and school backpack programs throughout the Bolingbrook community.

“As a purpose-led organization, our motivation to bring MOD to new communities is driven by our desire to make a positive impact in our local communities. We do this by offering well-paying jobs, career development opportunities, and by partnering with local nonprofits

Police officers to stake out nearly 300 Dunkin’ Donuts On May 18 area police officers again taking to rooftops to raise funds for Illinois Special Olympics For the 16th year in a row, law enforcement officers from throughout the state will rise to the occasion and support Special Olympics Illinois atop nearly 300 Dunkin’ Donuts rooftops on Friday, May 18, beginning at 5 a.m. until noon.

Officers hope to top last year’s donation total of more than $700,000 from 272 rooftops as they go to new heights to raise awareness and donations for the Law Enforcement Torch Run to benefit Special Olympics Illinois.

Special Olympics athletes and their families and representatives from Chicago’s major sports teams are among the special guests who will join police officers and show their support.

In honor of the Special Olympics athletes and law enforcement participating in the rooftop event, Dunkin’ Donuts will donate $15,000 to the Illinois Law Enforcement Torch Run. In addition, each guest who visits a Cop on a Rooftop location that day and makes a donation to the Torch Run will receive a free

dough, signature sauces and more than 30 toppings, for one flat price.

The company reports that ‘Spreading MODness’ is at the heart and soul of the company, emphasizing its mission to put its employees first, by offering above-industry pay and benefits to hiring people with special needs – including people in need of a second chance.

New open air market to debut at Uptown Square

Looking to build upon the idea of a farmer’s market concept, the village of Romeoville is creating a new outdoor marketplace in Uptown Square.

The Romeoville Open Air Market (ROAM) will operate from 11 am to 7 pm every Wednesday during the summer (except July 4) and will debut June 6. The begin date was originally slated for May 23, but was pushed back to allow for more vendors to sign up.

Park and recreation officials say they are excited about the endeavor and are encouraging those interested in becoming a vendor to contact the village.

What is considered Romeoville’s “downtown” area, Uptown Square, will offer the space in front of the Edward Hospital Athletic and Event Center for any kind of vendor to set up shop in an outdoor marketplace similar to that of a farmer’s market.

“Farmers markets have become wildly popular,” pointed out Mayor John Noak, “so we decided to create our own ver-

sion and open it up to non-food vendors as well.”

Uptown Square already features car shows in the summer and contains the newly constructed buildings housing Fat Ricky’s, Franconi’s Italian Grocer, Romeoville Dental, Subway, Mity Nails, T-Mobile, and BMO Harris Bank.

The summer schedule is expected to allow the community to come out and do a little shopping in the warm weather and offer a unique opportunity for the village.

Applications are now being accepted for vendors, so be sure your favorite business gets their submission in. Applications can be downloaded at romeoville. org. The 10 foot by 17 foot spaces equate to one parking stall.

Street work to begin in Bolingbrook Extensive $3.4M resurfacing project set for variety of roads

In one of the largest maintenance programs for Bolingbrook, more than $3.4 million will be spent on resurfacing roads throughout the village.

According to the Public Works Department a regimented process is conducted to determine which streets will undergo repair. Engineers drive through town on a yearly basis, ranking streets on a level from 0 to 100; those with more than a 50 rating are marked for resurfacing.

This year marks the most extensive resurfacing program the village has seen in years. Work will begin with curb repair and after the completion of the curb work the contractor will begin the asphalt surface removal and replacement operations. Street parking will not be allowed during street removal and replacement operations. No parking signs will be posted the day before work is to begin.

“It will be a little bit of an inconvienence, but we all love it when it is done,” said Mayor Roger Claar.

Welcome to the breakfast, lunch hive Bee Brothers restaurant opens in Romeoville

A new breakfast and lunch place is open for business.

Bee Brothers, located at 472 N. Weber Road, just off 135th street, is officially open for business.

The restaurant is expected to serve breakfast standards, but with a few different, unique dishes.

Hence its name, the restaurant will serve freshly-made honey biscuits and have a bee-like theme, associating its interior with the col-

ors of the honey producers.

The owners say the goal is to use the freshest ingredients possible in every dish. The menu includes breakfast like omelets, skillets, and benedicts as well as burgers, wraps and paninis and will be open everyday from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m.

A family restaurant serving breakfast and lunch, Bee Brothers will be the first foray into the restaurant business for the young ownership group, who also run El Ranchito Supermarket in Joliet.

Vacant for more than four years, the former site of Applebee’s will now be home to this new family restaurant.

Applebee’s closed in June 2013 after filing for bankruptcy and closing eight suburban locations in the same time period.

Great Migration brought more than 500,000 to Illinois Victory Bell can still remember the night when he boarded the Illinois Central Railroad

BY CHUCK SWEENY OF THE ROCKFORD REGISTER STAR Victory Bell can still remember the night when he boarded the Illinois Central Railroad’s City of New Orleans in Durant, Mississippi, bound for Chicago, then changing trains and ending up in Rockford.

It was 1945, at the height of the Jim Crow apartheid in Dixie that purposely kept blacks poor with few rights. Bell, his mother and siblings were headed north to join his father, who had already moved north to get a factory job.

“We had been sharecroppers,” the 83-year old Bell remembers working near Durant, 60 miles north of Jackson. The family had eked out a living, but opportunities for advancement just were not there for black folks.

“I remember it was in the middle of the night when we boarded the train.

We had to sit in the black section.

When we got to Illinois, the conductor said we could sit anywhere we liked on the train,” Bell said, “and we no longer had to say ‘sir ‘or ‘ma’am’ to white people, which was new to us.”

His uncle and father had come to Rockford in 1943 and 1944 to get jobs that paid better than sharecropping.

“The machine tool businesses were very aggressive in hiring at that time, and people were able to come to Illinois and get jobs at various machine companies and make a decent salary,” Bell said.

Illinois’ manufacturing industries were working around the clock to turn out planes, tanks, guns and bullets for the armed forces during World War II. The state’s manufacturers continued to boom after the war.

Bell is a living embodiment of The Great Migration, the movement from 1916 to 1970 of 6 million to 7 million black Americans from the states of the old Confederacy to the North. More than 500,000 came to Illinois.

They were fleeing legal oppression.

They were looking for better lives for their families, and for the rights to vote, to participate in their government, to serve on juries — in other words, to exercise all their rights as U.S. citizens.

Yes, these freedoms had been won in the Civil War, but when Reconstruction ended in 1877 and the U.S. Army withdrew from its occupation of the former rebel states, white Democrats reasserted their total control and suppression of the “freedmen,” as slaves were called after the war.

From 1900 through the 1920s, whites erected monuments throughout the South in honor of rebel leaders to demonstrate in granite and metal who was back in charge.

The Great Migration’s beginnings also coincided with World War I, when immigration from Europe slowed to a trickle and factories were short of workers.

Migration to the North slowed during the Great Depression of the 1930s but picked up again during World War II and in post-war years when highways were better and cars were relatively cheap.

Although prejudice was not absent in northern Illinois, it wasn’t codified into state laws that were sometimes enforced by night riders in hoods carrying torches.

“When I came to Rockford I was 7 or 8 years old. I started school that same year and I had a great homeroom teacher, Mrs. Burns,” Bell said.

Bell had never been to an integrated school before because they did not exist under the mandated segregation of Mississippi.

“Mrs. Burns was the kindest person and made sure I was comfortable in the school. She never showed prejudice. She had a clear understanding of how to help all the kids learn.”

Bell learned well. He got a job as a janitor with the Illinois Bell Telephone Co. and advanced to lineman, installer and then supervisor. Active in Democratic Party politics, Bell became Rockford’s first black alderman in 1971, a post he held for more than 30 years before he retired.

“We knew there was a different standard for blacks here, but Illinois was not as openly prejudiced. Mississippi was just a terrible, terrible place to be in if you were black,” Bell said. “We were kept out of school until November to pick cotton.”

Looking back, Bell said that boarding that train so many years ago “was the best thing we could have ever done.”

Parks to get upgrades ahead of summer season Deer Crossing, Village and Budler parks getting improvements With the weather turning nicer and the school year ending, attention will soon be shifting towards outdoor activities and Romeoville’s parks. With that in mind, the Village Board passed a number of park improvements

Finally, Budler Park, located near the intersection of S. Budler Rd and Trafalger Dr., will get a complete renovation. The work on the 17-year-old park will allow for upgraded playground equipment and adding new amenities and drainage.

“We take great pride in our parks and keeping them up to

date and up to safety standards is a huge part of that,” explained Mayor John Noak.

The village is constantly working to improve existing parks and expand on the collection of 31 park sites. Some of the park projects completed in 2017 included work at O’Hara Woods, Sunset Park, and Forestview Park.

last year.

Ryan Thompson, 28, of Joliet, pleaded guilty in January to two counts of Unauthorized Video Recording, a Class 3 Felony that carried a potential penalty ranging from probation to 2-5 years in

prison.

Circuit Judge Dave Carlson handed down the maximum sentence, noting that a psycho-sexual evaluation of the defendant conducted after his guilty plea showed he had an above average risk of committing similar offenses in the future.

The defendant hid behind the closed door of a utility room and used a cellular telephone to se-

cretly record the female victims between February and March of 2017. The four video recordings did not capture the girls while they were unclothed.

State’s Attorney Glasgow praised his prosecutor, Elizabeth Domagalla, with securing a guilty plea and sentence that takes Thompson off the streets.

“Assistant State’s Attorney Domagalla resourcefully utilized

an extremely damning psychosexual evaluation to argue that a prison sentence was absolutely necessary in this case, even though the defendant had no criminal record,” State’s Attorney Glasgow said. “Judge Carlson heard her arguments and handed down the maximum sentence, noting that anything less would have deprecated the serious nature of this crime.”

MOMENT Despite rough season, Bolingbrook baseball team gets all-important win on senior day

It was Senior Day 2018, at frigid Bolingbrook High School on Friday May 11, as “Old Man Winter”, returned to Will County.

Leading 11-2, with Raider runners on first and third and two outs, in the bottom of the sixth, Raider senior, second baseman Tyler Christy, dug in at the plate.

Cristy (2-for-4, 2RBI), ripped a walk-off RBI single to center, scoring Armand Morales (2-for-4, GWR), with the gameending, 10-run rule, run, for a 12-2 Bolingbrook victory. Cristy’s game-winner, set off a huge celebration, among the huge, freezing and vocal Senior Day Raider crowd.

“Was lookin for a first-pitch fastball, to hit,” Cristy said. “It felt really, really good, to see the ball go into centerfield. It’s been a real rough season for us. To get this win on our Senior Day, feels

great.

The nonconference win over East Aurora (7-16), was only the third victory, for the 3-15 Raiders, but by their post game reaction, you would have thought they had just won the Southwest Suburban Blue. The players and their families, poured out onto the field, for a post-victory celebration.

Andrejszki earns POY honors The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced on May 8 that Lewis University’s Dora Andrejszki (Budapest, Hungary/Dozsa Gyorgy) has been selected as the ITA Division II Women’s Tennis Se-

nior Player of the Year for the Midwest Region.

“It is a great honor for Dora to be named Senior Player of the Year in the Midwest Region by the ITA,” Lewis women’s tennis head coach Brett Bridel said. “I

feel very blessed to have had the opportunity to be her coach.

“She has made such a positive impact on our tennis program and Lewis University and I will forever be grateful. Dora was a warrior on the tennis court, a scholar athlete, and a true leader in every way.”

Andrejszki, who was the 2016 Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Year, has won a combined 55 singles and doubles matches this season. As a singles player, the Hungarian native owns a mark of 26-5 and is a combined 29-4 in doubles action. She and fellow senior Nora Mindiyarova (Moscow, Russia/Gimnasium 1577) are ranked 23rd in the latest Oracle/ ITA Division II Women’s National Doubles Rankings.

“I had to do my job for us in the big third-inning,” Dinkel said. “I hit the ball hard and put

it in play to get the first two runs home. We all just kept the line moving, toward this big win.”

With one out in the top of the fifth, Bolingbrook head coach Scott Thyer, took TrevinoRamirez out and brought in fellow senior, Will Sulima. Before heading out to his position in centerfield, Trevino-Ramirez, received a hug on the mound, from his father.

“Will (Sulima) has done so much for us here at

Bolingbrook,” Thyer said. “I wanted him, being a senior, to be able to pitch on his Senior Day.” Sulima, would allow one earned run, in his 1 2/3 innings of relief with two strikeouts.

Cristy’s walk-off hit ended the five-run sixth inning for “The Brook”. Senior Ethan Tran hammered a two-run double, to give the Raiders a 9-2 lead in the inning. Two more Raider runs were scored on Tomcat miscues,

before Cristy sent us all home for good Friday night.

“It was great to get this win on Senior Day,” Than said. “I had to come through for us, with the big two-run double.”

“It was great to see all our seniors play today and do well,” Thyer said. “Sebastian (TrevinoRamirez) is a quality pitcher and was outstanding for us today on the mound. This was a great victory for us and to come on Senior Day was extra special.”

BASEBALL The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced on Thursday (May 10) that Lewis University junior Connor Rutherford (DePere, Wis./DePere) has been named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District 4 Baseball First

Team.

Rutherford, who was named to the All-Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division Second Team squad Wednesday, has a 3.94 cumulative GPA in business administration following the Fall, 2017 semester.

On the diamond he led the Flyers in games played and started (47), triples (5), runs (43), homers (8), RBI (41), total bases (99), slugging percentage (.589) and walks (27), while tying for the team lead with 53 hits.

He had a .315 batting average and added 12 doubles and 11 stolen bases.

District 4 consists of student athletes from the GLVC, Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conference and Great Midwest Conference. Rutherford is now eligible for CoSIDA Academic All-America honors.

Once you’re debt-free except for your home — and you have your emergency fund completed — you’ve laid a solid, financial foundation for your life.

That’s when you can have a little fun and spend some money on a vacation, new furniture, or

something like that.

Children think about their immediate wants and do what feels good. Adults, on the other hand, devise smart, logical plans, and stick to them. I want you to have a great life, but you have to put in some hard work and say “no” to yourself sometimes in order to attain that great life!

Dept. on Aging celebrates Older Americans Month Department encourages older adults across the state to “Engage at Every Age” May is Older Americans Month in Illinois and the state’s Department on Aging (IDoA) is encouraging its more than 2.5 million older adults to “Engage at Every Age.” That’s the theme of this year’s recognition, which emphasizes the importance of being active and involved, no matter where you are in life.

“You are never too old - or too young - to participate in activities that can enrich your physical, mental, and emotion well-being,” said Jean Bohnhoff, Director of IDoA. “I encourage our older adults to take advantage of resources and social programs throughout their communities get out and do something new!”

Governor Bruce Rauner has issued a proclamation, recognizing the contributions that older Americans have had on Illinois’ history.

“Older Americans are the backbone of our society,” Rauner said.

“They offer the wisdom and guidance that will lead us into the future. Their contributions will have a lasting imprint on Illinois’ history and Older Americans Month provides an opportunity for all of us to highlight those accomplishments.”

The IDoA and its network partners will be recognizing some of those accomplishments at its 20th Annual Central Illinois Senior Celebration on May 16th at the Orr Building on the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield.

The event features free health screenings, information, exhibitors, prizes and entertainment and is co-hosted by Advanced Healthcare; HSHS St. John’s Hospital; Illinois Secretary of State & State Librarian, Jesse White; Illinois Senior Olympics; Memorial Medical Center; Senior Services of Central Illinois; SIU Healthcare; and Springfield Supportive Living.

Springfield resident Carol Schempp will receive the 2017 Senior Illinoisans Hall of Fame award for her commitment to health and the promotion of well-being for individuals of any physical ability at the event.

State receives approval from Federal Centers State receives approval from Federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) of 1115 Waiver, behavioral health transformation The Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services received notice from the Federal government today that plans to better serve Medicaid beneficiaries with substance use disorders and mental health challenges have been approved.

The Federal approval authorizes the state to receive federal financial participation (FFP) for the continuum of services to treat addictions to opioids, other substances and other health conditions. The programs and related innovations are being announced today as the Better Care Illinois Behavioral Health Initiative.

“This transformation represents a comprehensive way of serving our clients across the various state agencies and will help Illinois become a leader in integrating physical and behavioral health services for some of our most vulnerable residents,” said Felicia Norwood, Director of the Department of Healthcare and Family Services. “We have an opportunity to transform lives and be better stewards of taxpayer resources.”

Federal rules outline how states can spend Medicaid funds. But states can ask for “waivers” of federal Medicaid requirements to pilot or demon-

strate approaches to providing services not typically covered

by Medicaid, creating more innovative delivery systems that improve care, increase efficiency and reduce costs.

In October 2016, Illinois applied for an 1115 Demonstration Waiver to build a continuum of services for mental health and substance use disorder.

The waiver and other state plan changes also help healthcare providers more effectively integrate the physical and behavioral health challenges of their patients and promote more care in the home and community rather than costlier services in institutions. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Service’s Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced its approval of the waiver today.
