Apartment plans continue in village General development plans show 6, 3-story building complexes with total of 216 units

Plans continue as the Village of Romeoville approves annexation of land at Normantown Road for

future apartments.

In discussion for a number of years, the general development of Village Place apartments, on Normantown Road, just east of Bowlero is underway.

General development plans

show six, three-story building complexes with a total of 216 units; including 90, one-bedroom units; 114, two-bedrooms, and 12, three-bedrooms and a 6,000 square-foot clubhouse, dog park, car wash, and ample open space, approximately 45 percent of the site.

Mayor John Noak noted the elevation of the buildings allow for such green space which is favorable for this area.

In addition, Trustee Joe Chavez noted the quality of the apartments, with offerings of two bedrooms with two bathrooms, no shared hallways, garages and a

nice layout.

He also noted that building such apartments also attracts restaurants to the area that are attracted to this demographic.

In other development news, a section of land, north of Joliet Road and Route 53, classified as Gateway North and South has been given status as a tax redevelopment project.

The site has been long-considered a vacant and blighted area will now be subject to improvement. Designating the area as a TIF allows the use of public funds to redevelop the area that is an entranceway into Romeoville.

Site improvements at Romeoville High School and J.R. Tibbott Elementary School will continue this summer, improving traffic flow and circulation.

Valley View School District 365u will complete Phase II of both projects. The initial phase of work last summer included the reconfiguration of the parent drop off zone and the student parking lot.

At RHS, the $1.8 million project, is intended to provide a safe arrangement of bus queuing and student access to/from the busses during arrival and departure at the east side of the campus. According to the school district, the bus zone will be extended towards the south, and busses will no longer need to “double up� during queuing; offering a vast improvement in visibility.

Plans show additional sidewalks and standing zones to be added for students. Visitor parking will be segregated from the student flow, and a well-defined main entrance will be created at the east face of the building, off of Route 53.

Government Proposes Cutting Support for Meals on Wheels Federal funding for meals on wheels is on the chopping block. The Trump administration budget blueprint released in March calls for the elimination of two federal block grants: That’s money the federal government gives the states for social welfare programs, and those programs include homedelivered meals and meals served in senior centers.

Most of the nation’s 5,000 meal programs also rely on money from the Older Americans Act passed in 1965 to fund about 35 percent of the cost of the meals they serve. Those funds are also in jeopardy. The budget blueprint calls for an 18 percent cut to the budget of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), which administers the Act, and programs are bracing for more cuts.

Paul Kraintz who heads the senior nutrition program at Meals on Wheels in Martinez, California, says while his program would lose about $67,000 it now gets from one of the block grants, he’s really worried about the potential budget cut at HHS. “If they take 18 percent of that, it’s going to be big.”

Why the attack on meals delivered to the elderly, many of whom are homebound, ill, and unable to cook or shop?

At his March news conference, budget director Mick Mulvaney told reporters, “Meals on Wheels sounds great,” but to take that federal money and give it to the states, and say, ‘Look we want to give you money for programs that don’t work’ – I can’t defend that anymore.” He claimed the program was “just not showing any results.”

Mulvaney didn’t say what he meant by results. He didn’t have to. His comments were aimed at creating doubt in the minds of legislators who might look favorably on cutting the Health and Human Services funds for use elsewhere in the federal budget. The potential impact on hungry elders was

not a high priority. It didn’t matter that thousands of seniors on waiting lists for food in communities across the country are, in effect, stuck in a bread line.

Several academic studies examining meals on wheels programs have challenged comments like Mulvaney’s regarding the program’s effectiveness. A recent randomized controlled study funded by the AARP Foundation showed significant differences among seniors on waiting lists, those receiving home-delivered meals, and those getting deliveries of frozen foods. Seniors with home-delivered meals reported the greatest improvement in health and quality of life.

In 2013 Brown University researchers found that meals delivered to seniors allowed them to stay in their homes rather than going to a nursing home, and that resulted in a net savings to Medicaid, which pays for about half of all nursing home stays.

Nursing home funding from Medicaid may be in trouble, too, if Congress cuts more than $800 billion out of Medicaid over the next 10 years, which has been proposed. States could have fewer dollars to channel into nursing home care. The picture is bleak for senior services. Thirty-eight states also use Medicaid dollars for home-delivered meals.

cades. Erika Kelly, a government affairs officer for Meals on Wheels America, an umbrella organization for local programs, told me its members are already serving 23 million fewer meals than in 2005, a decline that has resulted in an increase in hunger.

Federal funding has not kept pace with the need. Money from state and local governments and private philanthropy hasn’t been able to provide the rest of the money to feed everyone who needs a meal. “The gap has grown so much there’s no way private philanthropy will fill it,” says Ellie Hollander who heads Meals on Wheels America.

Philanthropy works only in places where there are lots of wealthy individuals and corporations to tap. In Dallas, donors who can write checks for $1 million or $2 million have helped whittle the waiting list from about 3,000 a year ago to 2,000 today.

What do those still on the lists do?

“People have come to us who are literally starving, or they ask family to bring stuff from the food bank. It’s whatever they can do to get food into their homes,” says Katherine Krause, president of VNA Texas, the agency that delivers the meals.

Programs like those in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, aren’t as lucky. There aren’t many rich donors or big companies. “It’s worse now than it ever has been for funding,” says Director Betty Bradshaw.

In 1963 President John F. Kennedy, quoting the historian Arnold Toynbee noted in a special message to Congress, “a society’s quality and durability can best be measured ‘by the respect and care given its elderly citizens.’”

That respect and care may be threatened if government support to feed the elderly is cut.

This improvement will be made to the east and behind the football stadium complex.

At Tibbott, the initial phase of work last summer included the addition of a dedicated bus drop off/pick up lane, reconstruction

of the south staff parking lot and a much-needed playground was added. According to the district, Phase II at $518,000, intends to provide a safe arrangement for parent drop off/pick up and student access during arrival and departure at the west side of the campus. The parent drop off will be extended to the south to ease congestion. Additional sidewalks, walking paths and standing zones will be added for students and parents.

Funding for the projects will be incorporated into the budget through the bond proceeds.

While the Bolingbrook softball team ended the month of April with a .500 record of 8-8, there were a lot of signs that lasts seasons run to a sectional final can be repeated.

“It shows we have a lot of talent,” Bolingbrook pitcher Lorrin Pondo said of the win over Lockport. “We have a great group of girls.”

The talent is certainly there since that loss for Lockport is one of two through April. As of May 1, the Porters record was 22-2. But they had a big loss to Bolingbrook in the Blue Division of the SouthWest Suburban Conference.

“That was the first time I’d ever beat Lockport,” said Bolingbrook coach Jean RyanMoak, who is in her 16th season as Raiders head coach.

A big reason why was the performance of Pondo, along with her battery mate — catcher Nicole Bond. They are two of only five seniors on the team.

“They’re definitely the dynamic duo out there,” RyanMoak said of Bond and Pondo.

“They are two very smart and very special young ladies and will be missed.”

But hopefully they won’t be missed without helping the Raiders to another deep postseason run. Last year Pondo was lights out in the regional with a 4-1 win over host Batavia and a 3-0 shutout of No. 2 seeded West Aurora in the regional title game. That was followed by PHOTO BY MARK GREGORY

Flyer women win GLVC championship Lewis University women’s track and field were the reigning champions of the GLVC Championships and were able to reclaim their title winning the 2017 conference championship with 194 points.

Allison Heinzer (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland HS) took second in both the 400 meter and 200 meter dash.

She finished the 400 in 56.52 and the 200 in 25.27. On top of that she was named GLVC Freshmen of the Year.

“Allie had another great meet, she had to battle some nationally ranked sprinters, and she more than held her own,” Lewis head women track and field coach Dana Schwarting said.

Cierra Pulliam (Plainfield, Ill./ Romeoville) took second in the long jump after making a provisional qualifying mark of 5.81 meters. Pulliam also won the 100 meter dash in a time of 11.93.

Diona Johnson (Houston, Texas/Buena) also ran the 100 meter dash finishing in a time of 12.07, enough for second place.

Phoenix Smallwood (Princeton, Ill./Princeton) earned a provisional mark as well in the long jump after a 5.85 meters leap, enough to place her first for the event.

Lane Kadlec (Lockport, Ill./ Lockport) placed second in the discus throw with a toss of 48.60 meters which was a provisional qualifying mark.

Courtney Cross (Homewood, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor), Heinzer, Stennis, and Mead ran the 4x400 meter relay finishing in second in 3:54.45.

“It was a long weekend with a lot of weather extremes, but the women hung tough and got the job done,” said Schwarting.

“Coaching this group of women has been very rewarding.”

Coach Schwarting was also named GLVC Coach of the Year.

MEN’S TRACK

Bryce Holesinger (Fulton, Ill./ Fulton) finished the javelin in first after throwing for a mark of 53.90 meters.

Lewis will now await the announcement of the NCAA National Championships qualifiers. The championships will take place May 25-27 in Bradenton, Florida.

BASEBALL The Lewis University baseball team ended its 2017 campaign on a positive note, as the Flyers completed the Great Lakes Valley Conference series sweep over McKendree, earning 4-3 and 8-4 wins over the Bearcats at Brennan Field on Saturday (May 6).

Lewis ends the season with a record of 16-34 overall and 10-18 in GLVC action.

McKendree finishes the campaign with a mark of 13-34 and a conference record of 2-24.

GAME ONE LEWIS 4, MCKENDREE 3 WP - DAVITO (2-4)

At the completion of the 2017 GLVC Championships the Lewis University men’s track and field team finished in fifth place after scoring 102.50.

Adam Barr (Oak Forest, Ill./ Oak Forest) completed the final day of the championships earning a provisional mark in the discus with a 50.13 meters throw, placing him at fourth.

Sergio Miranda (Romeoville, Ill./Romeoville) came in first in the 800 meter run finishing in 1:55.33.

With the score tied at three, Lewis took advantage of two McKendree errors in the seventh inning and scored the winning run on a Bearcat miscue that would have ended the frame, giving the Flyers the 4-3 walk-off victory.

Lewis designated hitter Kenny King (Orland Park, Ill./Providence ) went 3-for-3 and drove in a run, while sophomore left fielder Connor Rutherford (DePere, Wis./DePere) roped a solo

Lotarski pitched the Raiders to their first ever regional title as a junior in 2014, a 7-1 win over No. 1 seeded Benet Academy.

That team, however, lost 6-1 to Naperville Central in a sectional semifinal. So last season’s team went further.

The quiet spoken Pondo, who will continue her softball and academic career at the Milwaukee School of Engineering, is certainly grateful to have Bond as a catcher.

“Nicole and I work great and she calls all the pitches,” Pondo said. “The key for me is getting ahead on the hitters. We just need to keep practicing like we have been and make adjustments.”

Bond, who got a 33 on her ACT, is going to college at Loyola University. While she’s unsure if she will continue to play softball for the Ramblers, she’s also left her mark at Bolingbrook as a 4-year varsity player.

“She’s a great leader behind the plate,” Ryan-Moak said of Bond. “She’s calls the pitches

home run in the Flyer victory.

Lewis senior reliever Nick Davito (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport) picked up the win for the Flyers, allowing three unearned runs and two hits, while striking out one batter in an inning of work.

The Great Lakes Valley Conference announced on Wednesday (May 3) that Lewis University’s Kaylee Prieto (Chicago, Ill./Marist), Dara Sanders (Crestwood, Ill./Mother McAuley) and Carly Jaworski (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) have each earned All-GLVC Softball Team accolades at the GLVC Conference Tournament banquet.

The three All-Conference selections are the most by a Flyer team since the 2014 campaign.

“I am so proud of Kaylee, Dara and Carly,” Lewis head softball coach Becky Pearl said. “I’m particularly happy that the other coaches in the conference recognized their efforts and how they helped our team this season.”

Prieto, a junior outfielder, was named to the All-GLVC First Team. The Chicago native topped the Flyers in batting average (.407), runs (42), hits (70), doubles (16), triples (3), total bases (107), slugging percentage (.622) and on-base percentage (.466).

She is in the GLVC Top Three in hits (2nd), doubles (t-2nd), runs (t-2nd) and batting average (3rd).

Sanders, a sophomore pitcher, was tabbed to the All-GLVC Second Team.

The Crestwood, Ill., native notched a team-best 18 wins for the Flyers, which ties her for eighth-most in school-history for a single season. She struck out 152 batters in 174.1 innings pitched.

Her 152 K’s are the seventhmost in Lewis history for a single-season.

Jaworski, a senior shortstop, earns All-GLVC Third Team accolades for the second time in her career.

The Lemont, Ill., native was second on the team in doubles (13) and third in batting average (.345) and home runs (3).

Plus her sister [sophomore Natalie Bond] is our second pitcher.”

Pardon the pun, but Nicole Bond is very happy that her and Pondo have formed a great bond.

“We made school history last year,” Bond said. “We’ve known each other since sixth grade and have great chemistry. I’ve caught her almost the entire time and we’re super close.”

Plus the duo has a certain pitch they love to call.

“Lorrin’s knuckle ball is incredible,” Bond said. “She’s had it since sixth or seventh grade.

But softball doesn’t know age. I had an umpire tell me how good her knuckle ball was.

“Our last regional before last year we were freshmen. So for Lorrin to be in the circle and [win another regional last year] shows a lot to everyone. We all did a great job and contributed.

We’re all the example.”

The rest of the seniors on this seasons squad are Carina Arteaga, Emily Brus, and Yanacey Izaguirre.

GAME TWO LEWIS 8, MCKENDREE 4 WP - HERRON (2-2) Lewis junior designated hitter Trayvon Johnson (Berkeley, Ill. /St. Joseph’s) went 2-for-4 with four RBI, including a two-run home run and two-run double, to push the Flyers to the 8-4 win and the series sweep over the Bearcats.

Don’t compromise your emergency fund DEAR DAVE, My wife and I are debt-free, and we’re ready to start building our first home. We’re a little short on cash to make the 20 percent down payment you recommend, but we do have a fully funded emergency fund in place. Would it be okay to take a little out of our emergency fund to make up the difference?

CHRIS DEAR CHRIS, Well, you didn’t give me exact numbers here. I don’t know how short a little short is, and I don’t know how big your emergency fund is. If you use a little of your emergency fund to round off the 20 percent and then you have an emergency, where are you going to be?

I recommend always having three to six months of expenses set aside for emergencies. If you’ve got $50,000 in your emergency fund and you use $10,000 of it, you’ll be fine. But anything that leaves you with less than three or four months of expenses stashed away would worry me. That’s the way you’ve got to look at it. Just use a little common sense with the numbers. I’d love for

you to put down 20 percent because you’d avoid private mortgage insurance (PMI), which runs about $75 a month per $100,000 borrowed. It costs you a lot of money if you don’t put down 20 percent. You should try to do that if possible, but don’t be irresponsible with your emergency fund in the process.

DEAR DAVE, I’ll be getting out of the military soon, and I want to open a coffee roastery in civilian life. I had planned to work at an established place like Starbucks for a while so I can learn the business. Recently, I’ve become concerned with this idea from an ethical point of view.

Can you give me some guidance?

The fact that you have enough integrity to even think about this means you’re a conscientious, honest person. I think you’re going to be okay. Making and serving coffee is not a proprietary set of information. It’s done all over the world by lots of people, so you’re not violating any ethics by doing that. Now there would definitely be something wrong with you stealing another company’s exact recipes or logo, but I think you already knew that. There’s nothing wrong with learning how to make different coffee drinks that are made all over the world. Starbucks doesn’t have a corner on that. Tips for dining out on Mother’s Day Despite distance, you can still make the day special for mom other’s Day is right around the corner, and this special holiday serves to honor all those women who devote so much time and effort to their families. While gifts and other trinkets are certainly part of the celebration, a vast majority of children opt to treat Mom to a night out on the town come Mother’s Day. Not only does this give mom a night off from cooking, but also it presents an opportunity to get dressed up and spend time together as a family.

A vast number of families travel to their favorite restaurants for Mother’s Day meals. Mother’s Day is one of the busiest holidays of the

year for restaurants. The National Retail Federation says 54.8 percent of Americans treat their mothers to a special meal out on Mother’s Day. Billions of dollars are generated by people eating out with their

mothers. With large crowds to be expected, diners can follow a few tips when treating Mom to a meal.

EXPECT TO WAIT Even with a reservation, you’re bound to spend some time waiting at the restaurant. Other families may be lingering at their tables, as no one wants to rush Mom out of the door. Plan accordingly for a potentially long wait time. This means having a snack before you leave. Don’t arrive famished, as no one wants the dining party to be hungry and cranky, which is not a good way to celebrate Mom. Even chain restaurants have curbside service, so if Mom is in the mood for a burger or something more elaborate, she’ll have that option.

EXPECT AN INCLUDED GRATUITY Restaurants often include a gratuity in the bill when servicing larger parties, such as those that might be celebrating Mother’s Day. The standard gratuity rate is 18 percent, but you may want to go above and beyond if you feel the service is exemplary.

HIRE A SITTER FOR YOUNG KIDS Although Mother’s Day is a chance for the entire family to spend time together, the main goal is to ensure Mom’s comfort and happiness. If very young children are in tow, she may not be able to relax and enjoy her meal. Infants will need to be fed, and toddlers may be easily distracted. Have a sitter watch little ones when adults are dining out, and then Mom can enjoy time with the kids when she returns home for more celebrating.
