Promenade seeks to be community partner Area groups and nonprofits sought for year-round programming

Continuing its mission of being a community hub The Promenade Bolingbrook is expanding its Live 360° offerings for 2018.

The community driven initiative seeks to transform the shopping center into a gathering place filled with events surrounding art, culture, fashion, food, fitness and more.

“Live 360° has experiences, events and activities all curated from a combination of The Promenade Bolingbrook stores and the Bolingbrook area’s diverse community organizations,” said The Promenade Bolingbrook General Manager Tom Castagnoli.

“We brought the community together last year and did focus groups asking them what they would like to see here. From there we were able to add in four additional concerts as well as our three Friday night concerts in June, July and August. The community told us they loved the outdoor music,” said Kris Kuchler, Director of Marketing & Partnerships for The Promenade Bolingbrook.

“People love the concerts,” she said. “They love meeting and gathering with their friends here.

“We want to be the place to meet,” she said. “We love that we can do this for the community.”

Kuchler wants area groups to view the shopping center in a different light. The center already holds bi-monthly blood drives.

“We can host little club meetings, we have space opportunities,” she said. “We have a chess club coming this year; [they] want to teach people to play.

“We recently partnered with the village; we just did a severe weather class,” she said “There is definitely an education aspect to [some of our offerings].”

Kuchler said she is currently in talks with a local nonprofit basketball team. “They are thinking about practicing here,” she said.

“You have a club, you have a sports team, let’s see how we can help you, how we can bring that to us.”

The Promenade Bolingbrook seeks to not just be a community hub but a community partner.

For the upcoming Terra Cotta Chime Contest, that starts May 12, the center is partnering with the Bolingbrook Arts Council Commission to get the streets of the shopping center decorated with terra cotta chimes.

“We want, need more people coming to us with their ideas.

People don’t think of us like that yet but bring your club here; we have tables and chairs. It’s an opportunity for the club to get out and be seen as well...”

The Promenade will provide the pot and a means to hang it. They are counting on the creativity of residents and area groups to really make the chimes ring out. To sweeten the pot, the chimes will up for online voting in mid-June with $200 and $100 gift cards awarded in various age categories to the top vote getters. The Promenade and the Arts Council promise even more events later in the summer.

“We’re very excited by this partnership,” said Phyllis Erickson, chairperson of the Arts Council.

On May 12 the Illinois Tollway Authority will also be at The Promenade doing kid’s seat safety check.

It is also the grand opening of the new kids playground, Kuchler said.

“With some of our events we ask for a small fee and we donate that fee to a local agency and then become partners with them,” Kuchler said. “It’s a great way to be give back to the community.”

For the upcoming June 29 Pet Parade the small parade entry fee is donated to local nonprofit animal groups.

Kuchler said they are working on more than just summer events seeking year-round programming.

“In the winter we try to find the stores that we can do indoor events,” she said.

“This past winter Asian Kitchen partnered with Macy’s to do different cosmetic classes.”

Bolingbrook passes balanced budget Fire station work continues; report on vacant Rt. 53/I55 retail center

The village of Bolingbrook passed a bare bones budget with a total for for the fiscal 2018-2019 year of approximately $154 million.

The budget reflects a 2.6 percent increase over last year, but will also see a 7 percent decrease in property tax revenue.

The lion share of the budget covers personnel costs at approximately $58 million or 37 percent.

Bolingbrook Mayor Roger Claar said pension costs eat up the bulk of the budget. In addition three of the six public service contracts are set to expire and are currently in negotiations.

The village will spend approximately $5 million in capital expenditures including 24 new vehicles and the remodel of Fire

Station 3. The village receives nearly 40 percent of its revenue, an expected $31 million in sales tax.

FIRE STATION REMODEL Work will continue on Bolingbrook Fire Station 3 with the fourth and final phase of the project.

The village recently approved a reduced bid, of approximately $395,000, to finish the project, scaling back on some of the design.

The remodel was required due to drainage issues in the building. Repair work had to be done to stop sewage from coming into the 40-year-old building. New drain and tiles were needed as well as an interior remodel of the facility.

STATUS REPORT ON CENTURY TILE SHOPPING

CENTER Bolingbrook Mayor Roger Claar offered a status report on the shopping center along Route 53 and I55 to those questioning what will be done with the property.

The retail center is roughly vacant, with a few tenants that have come and gone over the years, including the latest anchor Century Tile.

Claar said the property was originally bought in 1986 and at one time was home to successful stores such as Walgreens and Zayre.

Since then, as the shopping center went into decline, the village, according to Claar, met with owners trying to develop a TIF district that would help finance the area and allow for improvements. A plan was formed to knock down the buildings and rebuild. However, the developer opted out and continues to hold the property. Claar said the developer is willing to sell the property but is asking a highly exaggerated

price at $1 million an acre. Claar said that price is twice as much as it’s worth and that the problem lies not only with the asking price but the work that also needs to be done there. Built in the 1970s, if it were to be torn down, all new water retention would also be needed.

“The retail we know is dead,” said Claar, who would like to see hotels proposed in that area. “..We have offered everything we can imagine out of the development toolbox to help move this property. Believe me, there is nothing I would like better than to improve the front door to Bolingbrook on Route 53.”

This is the only property the developer owns in Illinois.

COMPANY MOVING HEADQUARTERS TO BOLINGBROOK A wholesale distribution company will be moving its headquarters from Downers Grove to Bolingbrook, bringing with it an expected hundred jobs.

The family-run business, Neuco is the leading master distributor of HVACR controls in North America, selling replacement parts to wholesale distributors throughout the United States and Canada.

The company recently purchased the building at 515 Crossroads Parkway and will be working to retrofit the building to meet its needs. The village signed off on a development agreement to waive its fees, approximately $18,000 to $20,000, as a means to offer some financial assistance.

In return, the company agrees to keep the property for 10 years and employ at least 100 people.

LANDSCAPING COVERED Bolingbrook approved five local vendors for its 2018 landscaping maintenance program. A total of $788,000 will be spent on landscaping including vendors, care and maintenance of village streets, street medians, retention ponds, grass cutting and general care.

Walgreens, America’s pharmacist, got its start in Illinois In ‘50s Walgreens entered modern retail era BY CHRISTOPHER PLACEK CPLACEK@ DAILYHERALD. COM A pharmacist at Walgreens for 37 years, Joel Karlinsky might often see people on their worst days, coming to him for antidotes to their health maladies.

But in providing a helping hand and friendly smile, Karlinsky formed a bond with his customers. One regular appreciated the service so much that he had an engraved Montblanc pen made for Karlinsky with the pharmacist’s name on it.

“I tried to go out of my way to be nice to them,” said Karlinsky, now retired, who for a time managed the pharmacy at a Walgreens near the company’s Deerfield headquarters. “Customer service goes a long way. Everybody fills the same prescriptions, but if you’re providing them with a friendly, knowledgeable individual, that gives them a level of service above and beyond.”

That pharmacist’s personalized touch mirrors the 117-year-old company’s origin story, when founder Charles R. Walgreen Sr. and colleague Arthur C. Thorsen personally greeted each customer who came to the door of their modest 20-by-50-foot pharmacy on Chicago’s South Side.

Some customers also called in their orders to Walgreen. He famously tried to keep the person on the phone long enough to give his assistant Caleb Danner time to gather the requested items and personally deliver them.

Company historians have coined it the “two-minute drill.”

“He was bringing a new level of customer service to the industry,” said Michael Polzin, a longtime Walgreens spokesman. “It was one of the things he focused on early on.”

Walgreen, born near Galesburg, moved to Dixon with his family as a child. At 16, he got his first pharmacy job, working for Horton’s Drugstore, where he earned $4 a week. He quit after a year and a half, but continued in the pharmacy business, working for

several pharmacists after arriving in Chicago in 1893.

Walgreen ended up at Isaac Blood’s drugstore inside Barrett’s Hotel at the corner of Cottage Grove and Bowen avenues. In 1901, Blood sold the store to Walgreen for $6,000. It took Walgreen years to pay off a loan he needed to make the purchase.

Walgreen became an innovator, taking what had been a dimly lit drugstore and installing bright lights. He widened the aisles and started selling items uncommon for pharmacies at the turn of the century, like pots and pans.

Walgreen, like other pharmacists, introduced the soda fountain to his stores, but he kept his open yearround, serving his wife Myrtle’s homemade specialties, like chicken, tongue and egg salad sandwiches, bean and cream of tomato soup, and cakes and pies.

In 1919, Walgreen had 20 stores, which a decade later grew to 525.

Company historians have attributed Walgreens tremendous growth in the 1920s to the popularity of the malted milkshake, invented by soda jerk Ivar “Pop” Coulson in 1922. Coulson added vanilla ice cream to the common malted milk drink, which consisted of milk, chocolate syrup and malt powder.

Daniel Okrent, in his book “Last Call: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition,” suggests the store also benefited from alcohol sales during that time, because pharmacies were allowed to sell booze

for medicinal purposes.

It was in the 1950s when Walgreens entered the modern retail era, with the introduction of self-service stores. Until then, clerks working behind counters retrieved goods off shelves for customers.

By the 1980s, the company was building more and more stand-alone stores instead of those in strip malls or attached to other retailers. By the next decade, the company started building drive-through pharmacy lanes.

Expansion has continued in recent years: in 2010, Walgreens acquired New York-based pharmacy chain Duane Reade; in 2014, it merged with Switzerland-based Alliance Boots, and in 2017, it got regulatory approval to purchase about 2,000 Rite Aid stores.

With that addition, Walgreens will have about 10,000 locations in the United States.

So how can a chain that’s become America’s pharmacist maintain its personal touch?

“It was so important to Charles Walgreen Sr. to make that connection with his customers,” says Polzin, the company spokesman. “I think that carries through today, too.

“Obviously, we’re a much, much bigger retailer and pharmacist than we were back then, but we still want to provide that care to each individual that comes into our stores.”

Tyler Lancaster has been through a lot to get to where he is, and he knows what he has to do

For anyone who plays college football, their ultimate dream is to hear their name called at the NFL Draft as one of the more than 250 selections by one of the 32 teams of the National Football League.

That was the dream of Plainfield East graduate Tyler Lancaster — at least for 240 or so picks.

Toward the end of the seventh — and final — round, Lancaster and his agent had agreed to terms with the Green Bay Packers as an undrafted free agent.

And with a Packer hat in hand, he informed those close to him of the exciting news.

The only issue was that there were still teams that could select him and ruin the moment.

“It was a very weird feeling because I got very excited about Green Bay and I told everyone that, but there were still 10 picks left. I was hoping nothing did change.

So many people want to hear their name (as a draftee), but at that time, I was hoping not to hear it,” Lancaster said. “It was a stressful day. I knew what to expect, but you never know what it’s like until you get there. I was sitting, waiting with friends and family, and by the time the seventh round comes around, I am texting with my agent and we had already narrowed down the teams we were considering based on depth chart, the interest they showed in me and the coaching staff. Green Bay was on the top from the very beginning and it felt right.”

Lancaster did not hear his name, signed, and became a Packer as he had wanted.

“About mid seventh round, the D Line coach (of the Packers) and said they took a defensive lineman out of Cal (James Looney) and that they wouldn’t take another D lineman, but they still really wanted me in free agency,” Lancaster said.

“I kept that in mind and I took a call from my agent and he said if

I went in free agency there were deals in place and the Packers were on top and I knew that was what I was going to do. So, it was decided with 10 or 12 picks left.”

Lancaster, the 6-foot, 3-inch, 313 pound Romeoville resident, was signed by Green Bay as a defensive lineman, a position he played at Northwestern after converting from offensive line after high school.

“I am a D lineman and I am ex-

cited for that, but I will say what I said back then and that’s put me on the field coach — I don’t care where it is,” he said. “I don’t feel any less valued as guys that were drafted and I know I can compete.”

That attitude was what got Lancaster a spot with the Wildcats and ultimately his crack at the NFL. “His senior season, we moved him from guard to center, where he became one of the best cen-

ters in the country and was probably the top center in the Midwest.

He had about six offers, but he had a dream school and that was Northwestern, but they had five linemen offered and all five committed and Tyler was kind of the sixth guy,” said former Plainfield East head coach Mike Romelli. “(Northwestern) told us that they did have some scholarships open SEE LANCASTER PAGE 10

LANCASTER FROM PAGE 9 and if he wanted to come and earn a scholarship at summer camp, they would be happy to have him.

That day, he was offered as an athlete because he basically blew up whatever drills they had. Then that summer he made the ‘The Opening’ which is a big deal with Nike and he was able to fly out to Nike headquarters and he was one of the top linemen in the country.

His freshman year he redshirted, then his redshirt freshman year he got a concussion and didn’t play too much and he was a little bit defeated. He had a strong support at home and he stayed with it and he really started grasping things heading into his sophomore season and he had three pretty good years and had a good career. If he

is given an opportunity in life, in football or in a career, he will put 100 percent into it and live it.”

With that opportunity at Northwestern, he became a beast in the middle of the defensive line and was a three-year starter. He posted 40 tackles (9.5 for loss) with two sacks as a senior. His junior year, he recorded 28 tackles (3.5 for loss) and tallied 33 tackles (5.5 for loss), 1.5 sacks and two forced fumbles as a sophomore.

His senior year, he was voted by his teammates to wear jersey No.1, an honor for any Wildcat player, as it is given to the player who best represents the character of the program.

“Getting No. 1 was a huge honor and I appreciate it,” Lancaster said.

“And that’s all it was — hard work.

That’s what I do and that’s what I did.”

He showed off what that hard work had given him.

Lancaster was not invited to the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, but at his pro day, his 36 bench press reps would have placed him fourth among defensive linemen at the combine. He also posted a 4.96 40yard dash time, which would have tied him with Tennessee’s Kahlil McKenzie and Alabama’s Da’Ron Payne as the fastest 300-plus pound defensive linemen.

“His pro day numbers were off the charts,” Romelli said. “He attacks it and he works his butt off to get better and that is what separates Tyler from other people and he has put himself in this position.

“There will not be too many people that will out physical him, whether it is on the defensive line or the offensive line.”

If Lancaster makes the Packers’ roster, he will join Plainfield North running back Kapri Bibbs in the league. Bibbs ended last season with the Redskins and is looking to secure a spot in the Washington backfield this year.

He would be one of only four players from District 202 schools to see a snap in the NFL, joining Bibbs, Plainfield High School’s Scott Davis (25th overall selection in the 1988 NFL Draft) and former Plainfield Wildcat and current head coach of Bolingbrook High School John Ivlow, who appeared as a running back in two games for the Chicago Bears and won a Super Bowl with the 49ers.

As a Romeoville resident, Lancaster joins current Spartan head coach and former all-stater Oliver Gibson, as well as brothers Cameron and Byron Stingily, who were on NFL rosters.

Cameron Stingily is now on the coaching staff at Maine East High School.

Lancaster is the second professional athlete to come from Plainfield East, following Victor Pineda, who was the first homegrown player in the history of the Chicago Fire soccer team.

“I am proud of that,” Lancaster said of his background. “I am appreciative of what (Plainfield East) offered me. Coach Romelli saw that spark in me and took an interest in me and I just want to

make everyone proud. I know not many people know of Plainfield and Romeoville outside of here and I want to put it on the map and I want to see the number of guys that make it go up. My Northwestern teammate JB Butler is a Plainfield guy from JCA and he will be going after this same thing next year.”

While the Packers are a good fit on the field for Lancaster, the 3.5-hour drive is a good fit for his family to watch him — which a big inspiration.

Family gained a new meaning for Lancaster the past year or so.

Lancaster’s dad, Brad, died in January after a battle with cancer.

“It will be really cool to have my friends and family close —my mom and my sister especially.

This has been a journey for them too and I can’t wait for them to see me play,” Lancaster said. “After my dad passed away, they have been searching for something to put their hopes in and naturally, it has become this journey to the NFL and I know it wouldn’t make anyone happier than them to see me play out there and I want to grant that to them. I know my dad is looking down, doing back flips and I know he would have wanted to see this, but he had the idea in his head that it probably wouldn’t happen, but he pushed all the way through the bowl game and was on the field with me and I was really happy to do that with him.

“Now, this is a turnaround from the trials and tribulations we went through the past few months and I appreciate the opportunity.”

While Lancaster was brought up in a hard-working, blue-collar family where he was taught to work hard for what he wanted. His dad’s fight gave him even more inspiration.

“It was incredible the hills and valleys I have had at Northwestern, but hard work and determination will get you there. I really never changed anything up — I have always put my head down and work until I pass out.

“My motto has been — ‘Remember the Why.’ Why was I going out at 4 a.m. and running until I puke, why am I lifting until my arms are tearing, why do I play this game in the first place? I would look over at my dad and see how hard he was fighting just to see me play,” Lancaster said. “On senior day, it was 30 degrees out with ice coming down so hard and tearing at our throats and my dad came down on the field with me. I remember my why — it is for my family. They give me the motivation and I fight for them.”

Mom needs to precisely detail her wishes Yes, the will needs to be changed to reflect her wishes DEAR DAVE, My mother wants everything, except for her home, left to my brother and I when she dies. She would like her long-time boyfriend to have her house. We don’t have a problem with this, but it has not been written into her will. Her mind is still sound, so does she need to officially update the will?

DAWN DEAR DAWN, Yes, the will needs to be changed to reflect her wishes where the house is concerned. Since she’s still able to make decisions independently, the will should be legally updated to reflect exactly what she wants to have happen with every piece of her estate.

It’s fine if she wants to give her boyfriend the house. It’s your mom’s will, and her estate, so she can do pretty much whatever she wants. She could also leave what’s called a life estate that says her boyfriend gets use of the home while he’s alive. Technically, in this kind of situation the house would be left to you, but he would legally have use of it during his life. Upon his death, the home could then revert to you or your brother.

—DAVE DEAR DAVE, My mom and dad are following your advice, and they are working hard to get out of debt. I was wondering, is it okay to buy things while you’re paying off the debt you already have?

LESLIE DEAR LESLIE, I’m glad you’re paying attention to the finances around your house.

Of course, there are some things

you must have. We call these “necessities.” Most things are not necessities, though. If your air conditioning breaks down, or you have car repairs, those are things you must spend money on to fix.

Things like new furniture, vacations, and eating at restaurants are not necessities. They’re things you might want, but they’re not necessary — especially when you’re trying to pay off debt.

I always recommend people take a hard look at their priorities, and remember there’s a difference between wanting something and needing something to survive.

It can be hard, and it may mean everyone has to go without a few things they want for a while. But if your parents are serious about getting out of debt, they’ll do it. And it really won’t take all that long.

Public input sought on Weber Road work in Romeoville

Anticipated Weber Rd/I55 work means road work necessary further south

While one of the busiest intersections in Will County, Weber Road and I55, is getting closer to the overhaul sought for years, work further along Weber Road cannot get lost in the shuffle.

A public meeting recently took place in Romeoville with the Will County Division of Transportation to discuss coming changes to Weber Road, from Airport Road to 135th Street.

The current plan shows that Weber Road would be expanded to three lanes in each direction with a barrier median to accommodate left turn lanes at intersections. The Taylor Road intersection will also get an upgrade. In addition, to accommodate the residential area near the Carillon subdivision, noise walls are being proposed.

“There has been a lot of attention surrounding the Weber Road/I55 interchange,” said May-

or John Noak, “but we can’t overlook the plan that’s unfolding just to the south, as this will complete the Weber Road Corridor project.”

The project is open to public comment until May 10. The project consultant will go through these comments and discuss with the county the revisions/comments/concerns expressed in them.

The hope is to bring a revised version of the project back for another public hearing in spring 2019 with construction to begin in 2022. Meanwhile, the OHL Group, through its subsidiary Judlau Contracting, Inc., was recently awarded, The company was awarded an approximate $47.9 million contract by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) to execute the interchange improvements along Interstate 55 (I-55) at Weber Road. The project consists of roadway widening, reconstruction, and resurfacing of Weber Road and it includes two independent bridge structures.
