New tenant for old concrete plant Illini Precast ready to improve, beautify property across from Lewis University By Laura Katauskas Bugle Staff @BugleNewspapers sweditor@buglenewspapers.com

As part of the village of Romeoville’s plan to beautify the Route 53 corridor, work will soon be done to clear the area across from Lewis University. Village documents show that that the concrete plant across from the entrance to Lewis University predates most village codes and was annexed as part of the Material Service Annexation in 1995. Over the years the plant fell into disrepair with large piles of broken concrete left scattered around the site from the previous tenant. Illini Precast, a company that specializes in pre-stressed concrete for parking towers, bridges, and big box structures, purchased the old concrete plant located on Route 53 across from Lewis University. Last year, Material Service and Illini Precast began the negotiations for Illini to purchase the site and had begun the cleaning process. Illini Precast recently closed on

the property and has begun improving the site, looking to repair the existing building. The company also will be adding a few additions of their own, including a 40-foot expansion to the north end of the building and a new batch plant. Over the past year, the village and Lewis University have been working to spruce up Route 53 from Renwick Road to Airport Road; burying overhead power lines, adding landscape islands on Route 53, and screening the surrounding industrial uses. According to the village, in exchange for allowing the new plant to continue to operate as-is and to grant the additional building area and batch plant, Illini Precast will donate 280 feet of precast wall for screening by the Lewis entrance and cover the cost of landscaping. The move is also expected to improve not only the existing entrance but will possibly include two future access points to the north of the existing access, along Airport Road. “This is an exciting situation,” said Mayor John Noak. “Not only do we have a new business coming into the area, but they’re immediately improving a property they just acquired and helping us to beautify one of the main entryways into town.”

VILLAGE NEWS >> BOLINGBROOK

Garbage debate continues at public meeting Toters vs. bags: Pros and cons over both discussed, nothing settled By Laura Katauskas Bugle Staff @BugleNewspapers sweditor@buglenewspapers.com

Though a decision over how to place your garbage for collection in Bolingbrook has not yet been made, one thing was certain, trash is serious business. The Village of Bolingbrook last week hosted a presentation and discussion on refuse collection at the Bolingbrook Community Center. Residents as well as representatives from Groot, the village’s waste management company, attended. Bolingbrook currently uses a bag program where residents ideally take out their trash bags in the morning, along with a blue recycling bin, to be picked up Groot. Bolingbrook Mayor Roger Claar said the issue of how to handle refuse collection has been going on for years. However, the debate over where to place your garbage has been continually growing, becoming one of the hottest issues in the village. The question comes down to whether or not the village should use toters or continue with bags. Claar asked residents to take the issue seriously and look at it objectively. Claar has explained that using toters is not as simple as one might think; noting that it comes down to the storage of toters, which are not pleasing to the eye when left out 247, the cost and code enforcement. “If you put garbage out on the morning, bags are fine. Nocturnal animals go after the garbage. The bag program has been in place for 40 years, long before anyone of us were involved in village government,” said Claar. “[With the toters] it’s not as simple as it sounds. Where do you put them? I have learned from code enforcement, it is stunning what people will allow to sit in front of their house. I personally do not want these sitting in front of our homes.” However, those opposed to using the bag program say that leaving bags out has led to an issue with animals rummaging through garbage and debris floating through the neighborhood, no matter what time of day it is. They say it is just a matter of a behavior change. “I have patiently listened to ev-

erything said...but we have possums, skunks, raccoons, red foxes, and hawks the size of small children on my deck. The problem is that by leaving our garbage out, we have created a feeding source. ..” said one resident. “This is a cultural thing. In my neighborhood, they pick up their garbage. What we are talking about is the way we think and behave. I can fit a snowblower and garbage can in my garage. If others don’t, I am all for code enforcement. It’s simple common sense and the right frame of mind. How is this (getting toters) not a benefit?” According to Claar, approximately two-thirds of the residents in Bolingbrook do not have a garage big enough to store a toter and their car, making storage impossible without having to relocate one or the other. He said the village cannot support having toters outside due to their unsightly nature and will have to cite residents who do not properly store toters inside after garbage pick up. Representatives from various homeowners associations said such toters would not work in their communities because of the stor-

age issue. Others felt the biggest concern was the open style of the blue recycling bins. Residents, tired of chasing their garbage, conveyed that these are easily affected by winds; asking for a possible change to these bins to solve the problem. “We have stuff blowing everywhere and that has an impact of 7 percent off our home’s value; according to Keep America Beautiful this is litter coming from uncovered toters. I don’t want to pick up everyone’s trash,” one said. In addition, some residents in attendance said they should have a choice in whether or not they want to use a toter, saying with a choice an individual resident can say yes or no and act accordingly. Another resident said toters are “hideous” and another pointed out

that toters are heavy and hard to maneuver for seniors and others in bad weather, especially considering a downpour or heavy snowfall. If the village does make using toters an option, residents would

pay $3.50 per toter per month; a 95-gallon toter for garbage and a 65-gallon toter for recycling. According to Groot, the majority of towns have an option for either a bag program or toter. Claar reported that in looking at ways to alter how garbage would be picked up, has lead a change as to how residents are charged for refuse collection. Currently, refuse collection is calculated into property taxes; those with larger homes essentially paying more for garbage collection. Bolingbrook is one of the few towns to operate in this manner. The village will be be changing how residents pay and switching to direct billing.

GUEST COLUMN

Illinois native Bill Veeck was champion for game of baseball BY ROGER RUTHHART | ROCK ISLAND ARGUS Bill Veeck wasn’t your typical baseball team owner. He was listed in the Chicago phonebook. He often walked the Comiskey Park concourse shaking hands as he limped on his wooden leg that he retrofitted with an ashtray. As a young man he planted the ivy on the outfield walls at Wrigley Field. He hired Larry Doby, the first black to play in the American League just months after Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier with the Brooklyn Dodgers. And he owned the Cleveland Indians when they last won a World Series in 1948. In later years, he was a regular on Chicago sports TV talk shows offering reasoned arguments on politics and society, and was often seen on WGN broadcasts of Cubs games shirtless with a beer in his hand sitting among the fans in the Wrigley Field bleachers. Bill Veeck was a showman, nonconformist and a champion for the game of baseball and the fan. And he’s an Illinois product. Veeck was born in Hinsdale in 1914. One of his early jobs was working with his father, who ran the Chicago Cubs in the 1920s and 1930s, selling everything from tickets to popcorn. “His father, William Veeck Sr., wrote for the Chicago American under the name Bill Bailey. He was intensely critical of the Cubs. It was unheard of at the time to take a newspaper writer and make him the general manager of the team,” said Paul Dickson, author of “Bill Veeck: Baseball’s Greatest Maverick.” “He comes in and (owner William Wrigley Jr.) just loves him. “He went in with the idea that Wrigley wanted to promote the team as an event for the whole family, rather than a game for guys with a cigar in their mouth. He sold it as a summer oasis. They planted trees and the ivy on the outfield wall and redid the bleachers and put in new concession stands with better food. Wrigley was a great advertising man and filled the newspapers with ads, not about how great the team was, but about the experience at Wrigley Field, about how much fun the family was going to have.” The Cubs won two National League pennants under Veeck Sr., who died in 1933 when his son was just 19 and a stu-

dent at Kenyon College in Ohio. The son left school to return to work for the Cubs, becoming team treasurer. “He wanted to fulfill what his dad was doing,” Dickson said. “Part of that was planting the ivy. He carried out the mission that Wrigley wanted. He kept Wrigley Field a friendly place. Cubs games were a social place as well as as athletic event. Veeck made sure the hot dogs were hot and the beer was cold.” In 1942, Veeck, along with former Cubs star and manager Charlie Grimm, bought the Triple-A Milwaukee Brewers. Veeck experimented with promotions (including a contest to rename the ladies’ room. The winner was “Hall of Fem.”) and game times, seeking to attract as many fans as possible. He also enlisted in the Marines, serving three years in an artillery unit (the same unit as Peoria native and Chicago Cubs announcer Jack Brickhouse) during World War II. Veeck’s leg was crushed by a recoiling artillery piece and his foot was amputated. He would later have more than 30 surgeries on the leg and lived the rest of his life in constant pain. Veeck sold his interest in the Milwaukee club and in 1946 purchased the Cleveland Indians. With Doby in the Cleveland lineup, Veeck also signed legendary pitcher Satchel Paige of the Negro Leagues, making him the oldest rookie in baseball history. The Indians won the World Series in 1948. A year later, and in need of money to settle a divorce with his first wife, Veeck sold the Indians. In 1951, Veeck bought the lowly St. Louis Browns. According to one tale, when a fan called the Browns’ offices to see what time that day’s game was supposed to start, Veeck responded, “What time can you make it?” Some of Veeck’s greatest stunts took place in St. Louis. In August 1951, Eddie Gaedel, who stood 3 feet 7 inches and wore number 1/8, suited up for the Browns. The shortest man to ever play in the major leagues walked in his only plate appearance. Veeck also turned game management over to the fans for a game, giving the crowd signs stating “Yes” and “No” when asked if the Browns should bunt, steal a base or play the infield in. The Browns beat Philadelphia 5-3 that day. Money issues often prompted Veeck

to sell his teams but rarely was he out of the game for long. After leaving St. Louis, he returned to Chicago, buying the White Sox in 1959. That year, the Sox made the World Series for the first time in 40 years, but lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Veeck would again sell his team. One of Veeck’s best friends was Abe Saperstein, owner of the Harlem Globetrotters. “They were two of a kind, promoters,” Dickson said. “At one point the two of them talked about buying a circus. It was a Chicago style — brash. If Veeck grew up somewhere else he’d be a different person. He grew up reading the Chicago writers, people from his father’s era, like Ring Lardner. It was a different kind of place than anywhere else.” In 1976, Veeck purchased his last baseball team, the Chicago White Sox again. This was on the eve of player free agency when salaries headed north of $1 million for top stars. Veeck created a strategy to keep the Sox competitive: rent-a-player, in which he would bring in a player in the last year of his contract with no intention of signing him after the season. “It solidified him as to who he was,” Dickson said of rent-a-player. “He relished this opportunity.” By 1981, Veeck could no longer complete with baseball’s new financial structure and sold the team. He left the game but his legacy continues and can be seen in every major- and minor-league ballpark, from the promotions to the scoreboards. He also had an influence on race and integration of the game. “Veeck opened the park for kids, women and families,” Dickson said. “He knew the game was constantly facing challenges and he knew he had to keep a step ahead. He realized the total package of well-contained insanity. While it didn’t always work, consider Disco Demolition (when the White Sox had to forfeit a game because fans destroyed the field), he had a major impact on the game.” About: Roger Ruthhart is co-author of the book “Citadel of Sin: The John Looney Story.” He can be reached at roger.ruthhart@ gmail.com. LEADER OF THE

Benet senior David Buh is the 2018 Voyager Media Boys Basketball Player of the Year BY MARK GREGORY Sports Editor @Hear_The_Beard mark@buglenewspapers.com

Coming into this season, little was expected of the Benet Academy boys basketball team. The Redwings were coming in with several new players and a lot of people outside of the locker room did not give Benet a chance to advance as far as they had in the recent past. But, when Benet ultimately reached the DeKalb Supersectional and fell in NIUs Convocation Center, the players on the team were not surprised at how far they had advanced. “There wasn’t too much expectation on us, so it was nice to come together and prove people wrong,” Benet senior David Buh said. “We didn’t advance as far as we wanted, but that didn’t take away from the season. We are very pleased and we were just very happy to wear the Benet uniform with pride.” Buh was the leader of the Redwings, averaging 13.3 points, 3.0 assists and 2.5 rebounds per game, while shooting 46 percent from the field. He tallied 64 total 3-point field goals. For his efforts, Buh is the Voyager Media 2018 Player of the Year. “He meant so much to us on both ends of the floor,” said Benet coach Gene Heidkamp. “He guarded the best perimeter player most of the times defensively, we relied on him to score and he was our leading as-

sist man. He impacted the game for us in every way possible. He had a tremendous year and he was a huge part of our success. “David worked really hard to put himself in this position this year. I know how important this season was to him this year. He achieved so much and the ultimate measure for him was the team success. He is well respected on the team for his work ethic and team-first mentality. This season was very fulfilling for him because of the team success. As much as his play impacted the team, his leadership did so as well.” The rest of the first team is:

Baseball sweeps McKendree series

The Lewis University baseball team completed a three-game sweep of McKendree, taking down the Bearcats 8-1 Saturday (March 31) in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game at Whitey Herzog Field. The fourth game of the series was canceled due to wet playing conditions. With the win the Flyers moved above .500 in the GLVC at 4-3, while their overall record moved to 10-14-1. McKendree fell to 5-19 overall, 1-6 in GLVC. Lewis dominated throughout the seven-inning game, outhitting the Bearcats 15-2 for the contest. The Flyers got on the board first in the third inning as a Connor Rutherford (DePere, Wis./DePere) double scored Jermaine Terry (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South). They picked up two more runs in the fourth as Anthony Cavalieri (Western Springs, Ill./Fenwick) singled with the bases loaded, scoring both Terry and Anthony

Rios (Lemont, Ill./St. Laurence). McKendree got on the board in the bottom of the fifth on a home run to make it 3-1, but Lewis scored five runs in the seventh to put the score out of reach. George Manikas (Lockport, Ill./Joliet Catholic) went the distance on the mound to move to 1-1 on the year. He allowed just two hits and one earned run in seven innings, striking out three batters. Earlier in the week, a pair of

strong pitching performances helped the Lewis baseball team win a pair of games against McKendree, 4-2 and 7-2 Friday (March 30) in Great Lakes Valley Conference games at Whitey Herzog Field. The Flyers move to 9-14-1 on the year, 3-3 in the GLVC, while the Bearcats fall to 5-18, 1-5 in the GLVC. But the Flyers stormed back in the top of the seventh. Neal Tyrell (Minooka, Ill./ Minooka) drove home the first run on a fielder’s choice and then Johnson tied the game, scoring on a

wild pitch. Anthony Rios (Lemont, Ill./St. Laurence) doubled down the left field line, scoring Tyrell, to give the Flyers the lead. Tyrell also scored the run in the ninth after a single and advanced a base during each of the next two at-bats and then scored on a wild pitch. After a leadoff double in the bottom of the ninth for the Bearcats, Brady Kostecki (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) retired the final three batters. Pete Hamot (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) (3-2) picked up the win for the Flyers, going seven innings, scattering 11 hits, allowing two earned runs, while striking out 10. Kostecki earned the save, his fifth of the year, with the scoreless ninth inning. Rutherford and Tyrell each had two hits to lead the offense. In game two, After leaving the bases loaded in the first, the Flyers got on the board in the second as Sam Cybulski (Clarendon Hills, Ill./Lyons Township) doubled to

left center and Jermaine Terry (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South)’s single drove him home. The Bearcats scored a run in the bottom of the second to tie the game at one. Lewis regained the lead in the fourth, scoring three runs. After a walk and hit batter, Cybulski singled home a run and Terry added a second RBI single. Cybulski later scored on a wild pitch. The Flyers tallied a fifth run in the fifth as a Johnson walk, followed by singles from Tyrell and Troy Hajdukovic (Palatine, Ill./Fremd) loaded the bases for Cybulski, who hit a sacrifice fly to center field. McKendree came back with a run in the bottom of the fifth, but the Flyers added two more in the seventh to put the game away. After a pair of walks and a sacrifice bunt, Rios had a RBI groundout, scoring Johnson. A passed ball moved Tyrell to third and then he scored on another base hit from Cybulski.

like to call “the unbanked.” This means that, for whatever reason, they avoid banks. That’s their choice, but in the process, they leave themselves susceptible to bad deals. As I said, I don’t feel the same way about check-cashing companies as I do about payday lenders.
