Local vet takes Honor Flight Frank Cale joins fellow Korean War veterans on conflict’s first Honor Flight By laura katauskas Bugle Staff

It was a time to remember those from a forgotten war and honor them with a free trip that they will never forget, including Bolingbrook’s own Frank Cale.

A staff sergeant during the Korean War, Cale began his service in July 1951. He served as a soldier, a bar automatic machine gun in hand, in the 24th Infantry Division, the Fifth Regional Combat Team, I Company, 3rd Battalion. When the rotation line froze, they stopped at him and his six-month tour was stretched to 13. He spent his 21st birthday in combat, but he says he was the lucky one – 33 men from his division did not return home.

A Bolingbrook resident since 1998, Cale, 85, recently had the chance to take an Honor Flight to Washington D.C. to visit national war memorials, with more than 100 fellow veterans from the World War II and Korean Wars. Because efforts have been made to give an opportunity to World War II vets first, this was the inaugural trip for Korean War veterans.

International Airport. Among those in attendance to support Cale were Bolingbrook village officials, friends and family. Cale said tribute group, The Andrew Sisters, even came out to send them off, and he was able to take a picture with the singers.

“It was just wonderful and a beautiful trip – something you don’t forget,” Cale added.

His wife, Terri, of 62 years, said it was a day of a lot of joyful tears and hugging.

On the plane ride there, the veterans received a mail call. Cale received more than 200 letters from individuals thanking him for his service.

“It was such a surprise and just amazing,” said Cale. “It touched a lot of us; gave such warm feelings.”

It was a whirlwind day trip, during which veterans were able to visit the memorials they had only heard about. Veterans were treated to chartered luxury buses to visit the National World War II Memorial,

Korean War Veterans Memorial, Vietnam War Veterans Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, the National Air and Space Museum, and the Marine Corps War Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery.

Especially touching to Cale, he was given a medal commemorating his service during a war, that has since been called “The Forgotten War,” since it happened so soon after World War II. “We were able to see it all – the memorials, the Air Force Museum – they took good care of me,” said Cale.

The Honor Flight Network program was conceived by Earl Morse, a physician assistant and Retired Air Force Captain. Morse wanted to honor the veterans he had

taken care of for the past 27 years.

After retiring from the Air Force in 1998, Morse was hired by the Department of Veterans Affairs to work in a small clinic in Springfield, Ohio. In May of 2004, the World War II Memorial was finally completed and dedicated in Washington, D.C., and quickly became the topic of discussion among his World War II veteran patients.

Morse asked these veterans if they would ever travel to visit their memorial. Most felt that eventually, somehow, they would make it to D.C., perhaps with a family member or friend.

In the past eight years, Honor Flight Chicago has provided free trips to the U.S. capital for almost 6,000 World War II veterans.

Valley View plans $9.1 million technology improvement initiative District plans to more than double number of student devices By laura katauskas Bugle Staff

The Valley View School District 365u is taking on an ambitious three-year, $9.1 million project to ensure new technologies are at the fingertips of all its students.

The district plans to more than double the number of student devices, including Chromebooks and laptops, over the next three years. The district will purchase 9,000 devices, increasing the number of devices from 7,000 to 16,000 for a one-to-one ratio for its students.

According to district officials, the ability to move to more technologically advanced teaching methods has been in consideration for some time. While the purchase and roll out of devices will be complete in three years, the financial cost will be spread over six years through existing local resources. There is no cost to students, according to the district.

Director of Technology Astrid Welch reported that there are a myriad of reasons for the project, including new curriculum resources that are web-based, an increase in online assessments and digital citizenship. Additionally, he said providing students with a device would help facilitate the use of the “4Cs of Twenty-first Century Learning,”— collaboration, communication, creativity and critical thinking. The advent of Google Apps for Education and the Chromebook, as well as student home access to the Internet and considerations over available physical space in district buildings, were all defining factors in this initiative.

Adam Hurder, director of Pre-K -5 math and science, said the Limitless Learning One-to-One initiative is modeling traditional teaching but will help make the process far more in-depth; changing the process of assessment with a quicker turnaround from student to teacher and help students be owners of their learning. “I think

the research we know shows that it is significantly better with the technological side,” said Hurder.

“We are not just buying devices— they are tied to instructional and curricular needs.”

Welch agreed. “This is not just ‘something else;’ we will enhance what we have in the classroom,” said Welch. “This also goes to meeting new standards we are accountable to, constantly requiring that students use technology appropriately.”

The district also will hire new technology staff and instructional specialists to ensure proper professional development, enhance curriculum and to have a direct impact on the classroom.

Instructional specialists will support teachers through coaching, modeling, and collaboration with a focus in the four curricular areas of math, English, social studies and science.

The first year will focus on the district’s middle and elementary schools, adding 2,445 devices to elementary schools’ current 2,780 and 2,220 devices to middle schools’ current 1,905. The high schools currently have 2,275 devices and will see the larger increase in the third year of the plan, with an additional 1,465 devices.

The first year of the plan will cost the district nearly $4 million – $2.7 million in device costs, $175,000 for deployment and nearly $800,000 in staff costs. According to Assistant Superintendent Gary Grizaffi, the total cost of the three-year project is estimated to be $9.1 million, plus associated finance costs.

Board approves $97 million budget Capital projects in this year’s budget include the completion of Fire Station No. 1 The Romeoville Village Board recently passed a $97 million budget for the 2016-17 fiscal year that includes no new taxes and a decrease in the tax rate.

According to the village, the typical homeowner’s property tax bill will be significantly less than it was in 2008.

If the village had increased the typical cost at the rate of inflation, the cost would be more than $100 more per home.

“We’ve worked very hard to provide a budget that includes many new projects that will benefit the residents and community while keeping taxes low,” said Mayor John Noak.

Some of the capital projects in this year’s budget include the completion of Fire Station No. 1; increased funding for street repairs and resurfacing; construction of the new Metra station; implementation of the Romeoville Reinvestment

Program; the Weber-Airport Road multi-use trail; and park improvements at O’Hara Woods, Century Park and Green Haven Park.

“We are fortunate to continue to attract new development that provides additional revenue, as well as amenities to our community,” said Noak. “This new development allows us to complete needed infrastructure improvements without added costs to the residents.”

The mayor added that the village will provide another rebate to residents, which the rebate program’s sixth year.

District supports Week of the Young Child Opportunity to donate will continue through Friday, April 29 Throughout the Week of the Young Child, the Bolingbrook Park District will support Almost Home Kids, which provides transitional care in a homelike setting to children with complicated health needs, training for their families and respite care.

The preschool staff at Bolingbrook Park District will be collecting and donating supplies that they need.

This program has helped families with transitioning their children’s health care from a hospital

setting to their home. They receive training from doctors and nurses on how to care for their often terminally ill child.

Boxes will be set up at the Annerino Community Center, Bolingbrook Recreation & Aquatic Complex, and Hidden Oaks Nature Center for those that would like to donate.

Donations can include supplies that Almost Home Kids needs or monetary donations are accepted. Items include: receiving blankets; rubbermaid plastic mixer-mate bottles; bubbles; books with sensory exploration (sound, music, texture etc.); WubbaNub plush infant pacifier toy; diapers – size 1, 2, 5 and 6; gift cards in any amount to Target, Walmart, Jewel or Home

Depot; and paper towels. During all of the Week of the Young Child events, these boxes or “houses on wheels” will be available for any patrons that wish to donate.

This opportunity will continue through Friday, April 29.

Upon completion, the preschool staff will deliver the donations and present Almost Home Kids with a check.

Area resident seeks liver transplant

Family, friends of Bolingbrook native look for living donor By laura katauskas Bugle Staff

Diagnosed with a rare liver disease that is wreaking havoc in her body, the family of a 40-yearold Bolingbrook native is seeking help in finding a living donor.

Kelly Drey, daughter of retired Public Works Director Mike Drey, has developed a rare disease of the bile ducts that is causing her liver to fail.

A liver transplant is her only hope to survive.

She has been diagnosed with primary biliary cholangitis, a progressive disease that slowly leads to liver failure. This autoimmune disease attacks the small network of bile ducts inside the liver.

The 1993 Bolingbrook High School graduate is known for her bubbly giggle and smiling eyes and as mom, Peggy Drey, explains, “Nothing Kelly did caused the disease.”

she said. “She has been diligent in seeing her gastroenterologist and taking the one medication that has ever proven to help slow down the disease.”

About six months ago, her liver started showing early signs of failure and is progressively getting worse, as organs throughout her system are attacked. According to Peggy, the only cure for PBC is a transplant. However, some patients can’t hold on long enough until they are the next in line for a deceased donor who is compatible.

Her physicians are surprised at the rate the disease is progressing for

someone of her age and worry for the near future.

“Much to our shock, her hepatologist at Northwestern at the first office visit recommended her to the transplant team,” said Peggy. “What’s more, they urged us strongly to seek out a living donor. They are worried that she could sit on the waiting list too long. If a compatible living donor is found, they can proceed with the transplant right away. They replace her liver with a healthy piece of a donor liver, and the PBC is gone.”

Unfortunately, no one in the family is a compatible donor and time is critical. Now, the Dreys are looking for a living donor, or as they call it a saint.

“We know there are noble souls who are so self-sacrificing that they would give Kelly a piece of their liver just to be helpful – amazing,” said Peggy.

The liver regenerates and within two months of the surgery, both a donor and recipient have new, fully grown livers. A donor must be between 18 and 55 years old with a BMI less than 30, a blood type of O, and in good health.

Director rising to the challenge of building a choral program at RHS Andrew White has his hands full and he loves every minute of it. Even as he prepares for the May 13 Choir Pops Concert, Romeoville High School’s new Choral Director is already looking to the future.

“An opportunity like this to build up a program in the Chicago suburbs is very rare,” said White, who joined the RHS team at the start of the current school year after serving as Choral Director at Ottawa High School for two years.

“The majority of my singers are juniors and seniors so next year half my kids are gone. The first thing I need to do is attract ninth and tenth graders and connect with our middle schools to get some vertical integration going.”

A graduate of Millikin University with a rare dual major in music education and vocal performance, White grew up in upstate New York with parents who were both music educators.

“They were both instrumentalists but I went over to the dark side of vocal music,” he recalled. “I got into vocal jazz in high school which drew me into the whole idea of majoring in music.”

A state-caliber tenor in high school, White’s resume includes several opera performances in college, some community theatre and lots of church choirs, including work last year as a paid sectional leader at Grace United Church in Naperville.

“I’m not performing anywhere right now,” he said. “I want to put all my energy into the school.”

His first job out of college was in Decatur Public Schools where he served as a general music instructor for children in kindergarten through sixth grade.

He also ran the choral program at Eisenhower High School in Decatur.

When the opportunity arose to become Choral Director at RHS, he jumped at the chance.

“Clearly this is a place where a choral program will work,” said White, who pointed to the strong band program at RHS. “In most places the choir program is bigger than the band program because it’s easier to teach a student to sing from scratch than it is to start an instrument in high school.”

White, who is pursuing his Master’s Degree in music education at Vandercook College of Music, considers himself more than just a music teacher.

“Music is a vehicle to teach skill building and a vehicle to help people be better,” he said.

“I really believe music enhances your life.”

Grant will allow Martinez to purchase oxygenmeasuring devices The Physical Education Department at A. Vito Martinez Middle School in Romeoville has received a $500 grant that will be used to purchase 10 pulse oximeters.

The devices will allow the school to measure the oxygen level in students’ blood to

determine how efficiently oxygen is being sent to the furthest parts of the body, according to Martinez PE Key Leader Chris McVey. The grant was courtesy of the Northeastern District of the Illinois Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.

Children’s author puts students through some ‘brainwork’ Susan B. Katz visits Tibbott, Irene King elementary schools Award-winning children’s book author Susan B. Katz brought her thinking cap and her marvelous version of “brainwork” to Tibbott and Irene King elementary schools.

A National Board Certified teacher, she delighted both schools’ younger students with a fun, interactive presentation about shapes and months based on her latest book “All Year Round” which was named Best New Book of 2016 by the Children’s Book Review.

“My Mama Earth” was written because she wanted to help children protect our planet. She wrote “ABC School’s For Me” as a sequel to her first book.

Mentoring program deemed a success Jane Addams will celebrate success of 3M-Alliance May 21 Jane Addams Middle School will celebrate the success of the school’s 3M-Alliance May 21 with special graduation ceremonies for six eighth graders who helped launch the new mentoring program earlier this year. When they do graduate from the Alliance, they will do so wearing new suits provided to them free of charge as a reward for their hard work by Kenneth Parks Sr., a Joliet apparel consultant for the Kema Apparel Group.

“It all started out when a teacher said I have a sixth grade student who could benefit from having an older mentor,” recalled Jane Addams Behavior Specialist Miguel Salinas, who serves as the group’s advisor.

“Now, the goal is one day to see 3M-Alliance all over Bolingbrook.

When you build a house, it’s all about the foundation. Once you have a foundation, you can build the house.”

The Alliance’s three M’s (mentoring, motivation and mindset) serve as the guiding principles for the group. Every Monday before school starts, mentors must track and report

program has changed my son,” Salinas said.

Equally amazing is the path that brought Parks to the group courtesy of Bolingbrook High School Assistant Principal Dr. Albert Brass who introduced him to Jane Addams Dean Tammy Rotelli.

“The day I came out and met you guys, I knew I made the right decision,” Park told the mentors as he presented the suits to them Wednesday. “I was in eighth grade once and somebody helped me.

What I am doing is just a small token of what you guys have started. You guys should be awfully proud of yourself.”

Those of us who grew up in small rural communities in the 1950s and 60s expected to have longer life spans than our parents. The trends were in our favor. White women born in 1900 could expect to live, on average, just shy of 49 years; white men 46.6 years. Those were our grandparents and our neighbors.

By 1950, life expectancy had climbed to 72 years for white women born that year and 66.5 for white men. By 2000, life expectancy was still increasing, with female babies expected to live to nearly 80 and males to almost 75. America was on the rise, jobs were plentiful, antibiotics kept us from dying of strep throat, and polio vaccine kept us out of the iron lung. We thought things would only keep getting better.

So I was dismayed to read a story in the Washington Post in April that blew holes in those childhood expectations.

The Post found “white women have been dying prematurely at higher rates since the turn of this century, passing away in their 30s, 40s, and 50s in a slow-motion crisis driven by decaying health in small town-America.”

That “small town America” was where I grew up. I contrasted the Post’s findings to the claims made by all those politicians who have told us we have the best healthcare in the world and who point to gobs of money lavished on the National Institutes of Health to find new cures and to hospitals promoting their latest imaging machines. The Post found

If the U.S. really has the best healthcare, why are women dying in their prime, reversing the gains we’ve made since I was a kid? After all, mortality rates are a key measure of the health of a nation’s population. Post reporters found, however, that those dismal stats probably have less to do with healthcare – which we like to define today as the latest and greatest technology and insurance coverage albeit with high deductibles – and more to do with what health experts call “the social determinants of health,” such basics as food, housing, employment, air quality and education.

Landmark studies examining the health of British civil servants who all had access to health insurance under Britain’s National Health Service have found over the years that those at the lowest job levels had worse health outcomes.

Some of those outcomes were related to things like work climate and social influences outside work like stress and job uncertainty.

In its analysis, the Post found that the benefits of health interventions

that increase longevity things like taking drugs to lower cholesterol and the risk of heart disease, are being overwhelmed by increased opioid use, heavy drinking, smoking and obesity.

Some researchers have speculated that such destructive health behaviors may stem from people’s struggles to find jobs in small communities and the “dashed expectations” hypothesis. White people today are more pessimistic about their opportunities to advance in life than their parents and grandparents were.

They are also more pessimistic than their black and Hispanic contemporaries.

A 42-year-old Bakersfield, California, woman who was addicted to painkillers for a decade explained it this way: “This can be a very stifling place. It’s culturally barren,” she said.

“There is no place where children can go and see what it’s like to be somewhere else, to be someone else. At first, the drugs are an escape from your problems, from this place, and then you’re trapped,” she told Post reporters.

I recently heard the U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy talk about his upcoming report on substance use.

About 2.2 million people need help, he said, but only about one million are actually getting it. Murthy wants his report to have consequences as far reaching as the 1964 surgeon general’s report linking tobacco use to lung cancer.

In 1964, Murthy noted, 42 percent of Americans smoked; today fewer than 17 percent do.

The Post story concludes that the lethal habits responsible for the increasing mortality rates is cresting in small cities where the biggest manufacturer has moved overseas or in families broken by

A home for old historic Romeo

Everyone and everything needs a home. History all around us hides in a closet. Not anymore.

As I write my thoughts, they are of our first pioneer settlers of old Romeo. They came for clean open space, and to start a new home community. They were a lighthouse of inspiration, strength, courage, dignity and worth.

I was honored to work at our historical society with two great ladies of substance with strong ethics. They were Dorothy and Mabel, who were two of some of our past founders. These courageous people kept artifacts and historical items in their homes, garages and wherever possible.

The intent was to save these precious historical items for the future generation to come.

Our Romeoville Area Historical Society has been searching for a home for many months. At this writing, we have found a home right here in Romeoville – Hampton Park. This area in our village is our settlers’ roots. This is history. t helps us to belong and be counted.

Our mayor, Dawn and trustees are working diligently to acquire our home.

Their leadership is an inspiration. They acknowledge our museum belongs to the people of our village, that was once Romeo.

Our past settlers and pioneers would be proud to be a first of our great village of Romeoville.

Fire crews contain massive blaze at furniture warehouse No one injured during April 21 multialarm fire

More than 30 southwest suburban fire departments were called on April 21 to help contain a massive fire at a Woodridge furniture warehouse.

Remarkably, no one was injured in the blaze, which quickly consumed a 700,000-square-foot building at 2500 Internationale Parkway.

Smoke from the fire could be seen as far away as Plainfield.

“Fire fighters from about 35 departments from the surrounding areas responded to help contain the fire,” said Lemont Fire Protection District Chief George Rimbo, whose district oversaw the effort.

“At one point, we had five aerial streams going to keep the fire from spreading to other buildings.”

Officials said the district received an automatic fire alarm notification from the RoomPlace furniture warehouse at approximately 5 p.m.

April 21.

The blaze quickly escalated to a four-alarm fire, prompting fire officials to initiate a mutual aid call to neighboring fire departments.

“All the employees were safely out of the building when we arrived on scene,” Rimbo added. “No firefighters were injured during the incident.”

However, nearby businesses were forced to evacuate due to safety concerns. Crews managed to extinguish a majority of the fire that

evening, but Rimbo said several companies remained on scene overnight to ensure the fire was contained.

The cause of the blaze is still under investigation.

The state fire marshal was on scene, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is handling the investigation.

Additionally, Illinois American Water Company issued a boil order for its customers who live near the location of the fire. The order affects the portion of Woodridge south of I-55 served by the IAW’s system.

CANADA Plainfield East’s Reed chooses to play basketball beyond borders

When high school athletes look to get a college scholarship, they look at either local schools or schools farther away in the United States so they can get away from home or so they can go to a campus they like.

What just about every high school athlete doesn’t think about is playing out of this country.

Plainfield East’s Jordan Reed isn’t every other high school athlete.

Reed decided to think outside of the box and contacted the University of Prince Edward Island in Canada, which in turn offered him a scholarship.

“I was just looking to do something different,” Reed said. “It was a great opportunity with great academics and a great program.

The people were great as well and all those things played into that.”

Prince Edward Island is located off the Canadian coast by New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, which

is east of Maine in the Atlantic Ocean.

Reed, who averaged more than 10 points per game as a senior and competed in the Voyager Media AllStar game, gained an interest in the school at the end of the season and visited the school, which made him want to attend there.

“It was something that popped up towards the end of the season,” Reed said. “I reached out to them and we took a trip there. It’s a real small place and basically everyone knows each other. They have the biggest bridge down there, which is 8.4 miles over ice water, so that is nice. The campus is nice and the basketball court is nice. The international three-point line will be something to get used to.”

While many athletes at least know one of their teammates or opponents when they sign with a school, Reed will be surrounded by unfamiliar faces and voices.

Young Bolingbrook learning on the go Raiders feature several underclassmen

This season, the Bolingbrook softball team has 14 players on its roster, six of which are either freshmen or sophomores.

While that may bode well for the future of the Raider program, right now, there are growing pains to be dealt with.

“We only have two seniors and only a few juniors,” said Bolingbrook coach Jean RyanMoak. “The sophomores we have at least were here as freshmen and they are coming into their own, but there is still work to be done there.

“We have two freshmen coming in who are a little overwhelmed with the pace of a varsity game.

They are good players, but it is a matter of quick to the ball, quick feet, quick release. They have a

little more time in summer ball to do this on average, but if you are going to step up and play varsity ball, you have to step up.

Everyone just has to pitch in and stay positive and be leaders and help each other out.”

Moak does not believe in bringing freshmen up and not getting them on the field, as was evident April 15 when she started freshman pitcher Natalie Bond against Joliet Central.

“I want to get her the experience, she has to learn sometime,” Moak said. “My philosophy is that if you are a freshman playing on varsity, you have to play. You are not going to sit the bench, so why not get her in for a conference game.”

The one thing Bond has going for her when she pitches is a familiar face behind the plate as her sister, Nicole, is a junior catcher for the Raiders.

Despite that, Reed thought it was a good fit for him and thinks it can be a good fit for future Americans as he hopes to be a catalyst for the recruitment of local athletes out of the country.

“I’m hoping to start a trend and show people there are different options out there,” Reed said.

Junior Rachel Sweeney (Highlands Ranch, Colo./ Mountain Vista) put together a top three performance for Lewis women’s golf at the 2016 Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship.

Sweeney concluded the three-round event on Sunday (April 24) a 71.

She finished tied for third with a tournament total of 79-7571=225. She earned All-GLVC honors for her play. Her 71 tied for the best round of any golfer in the championship. Missouri-St. Louis’ Stefaniya Ivanova also shot a 71 on Sunday. Sweeney’s 71 is the second best round ever for a Flyer at the GLVC Championship.

Reetta Laakkonen shot a 70 in the second round of the 199900 championship on her way to medalist honors.

As a team, Lewis shot a 311 on Sunday for a three-round total of 322-312-311=945.

The Flyers finished in fifth place. It is Lewis’ best showing at the GLVC Championship since finishing fourth during the 199900 season.

Lewis’ 311 is their best single team round at the GLVC Championship in school history.

The Raiders lost the contest in extra innings after getting down early and rallying back to tie.

“The last three games are all games we beat ourselves,” Moak said. “We were down in all three and we rallied back. I hope we don’t have to do that, I hope we can string hits together earlier in the game and have a cushion and not play so tight. When they are up, they are up and when they are on, they are on. It is just a matter of

who is going to be on and can we get it going in the early innings.”

For the Raiders this season, Moak said the goals are simple and attainable and if the team is playing its best softball at the playoffs, she knows anything can happen.

“Our goal is to take something from every single game and learn from it and keep moving forward,” she said. “We just have to move forward.”

“I want to open it up for those kids coming up behind me. I’m definitely thinking about going down there and having a successful career. You can spend five years playing there and I want to get my degree and wherever it takes me from there.”

Reed is expecting to be the lone player from the United State on the roster. He did get to meet the players and was able to play with them when he made his visit.

“There were a lot of players from Nova Scotia and some Serbian

players on the team,” Reed said.

“They’re some real cool players and I got to meet them in the locker room before we scrimmaged and they said they loved it there.”

Unlike in America, players get five years to play in Canada and Reed is hoping to make an immediate impact.

“The first two years I hope to get all rookie Canadian Team and get a chance to do some good things out there,” Reed said. “They play games all over Canada, so it will be a good time.”

Junior Melissa VanSistine (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic) fired a 78-77-80=235, tying for 14th place. Sophomore Hannah Schultz (North Prairie, Wis./Mukwonago) shot an 85-78-81=244, tying for 32nd.

Senior Jordan Nichols (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) had her best round of the event on Sunday. She earned 44th, shooting a 90-82-79=251.

Freshman Madison Hill (Pekin, Ill./Pekin Community) carded an 80-86-87=253.

Indianapolis won the 14-team event with an 899 to earn the GLVC Championship. Annbriar Country Club hosted the tournament.

The Flyers will now wait to see if they have earned a berth in the NCAA East Regional.

Lewis was No. 12 in the most recent regional poll released by the NCAA. The top 12 teams earn a berth to the event May 2-4 at Piper Glen Golf Course in Springfield, Illinois.

The Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association announced the 2016 All-MIVA and award winners on Thursday (April 14) No. 12 Lewis men’s volleyball earned five All-MIVA honors and freshman opposite hitter Mitch Perinar (Channahon, Ill./ Minooka) was named the 2016 MIVA Freshman of the Year.

Perinar led the Flyers in kills per set at 3.03. He hit at a .319 clip. In MIVA matches, Perinar was even better. He ranked ninth in conference play with a .371 attack percentage while averaging 3.34 kills per frame. He is Lewis’ third MIVA Freshman of the Year since 2010. Ian Karbiener earned the honor in 2010. Geoff Powell (Claremont, Calif./Claremont) picked up the award in 2012.

“Mitch had a fantastic season as a freshman, leading us in points and kills,” Friend said. “He did so while having some of those intangibles you need in a player: intensity, competitiveness and an edge.”

Senior middle hitter Bobby Walsh (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) was selected to the AllMIVA First Team. Perinar, senior setter Scott Fifer (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) and junior middle hitter Jacob Schmiegelt (Lombard, Ill./Willowbrook) were selected to the All-MIVA Second Team. Junior outside hitter Trevor Weiskircher (Loves Park, Ill./Boylan Catholic) earned All-MIVA Honorable Mention accolades.

“I’m excited for all five guys and the entire team,” Lewis head coach Dan Friend said. “All of them made significant contributions throughout the course of the season.”

Fifer dished out 975 assists (9.75 per frame). He ran an offense that hit .309 in MIVA matches, second best in the league. This is the second consecutive season Fifer has been named to the All-MIVA Second Team.

Schmiegelt picks up his first career all-conference honor. He hit .439 with 1.65 kills per set while adding 1.02 blocks per frame. He helped the Flyers average 2.47 blocks per set in conference play, second best in the league.

Weiskircher hit .270 while averaging 2.40 kills per set. He also totaled 130 digs (1.46 per set) and 45 blocks (0.51 per set). This

In the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association tournament, the Flyers’ bid for a title came up short April 23.

The Flyers fell 3-2 (25-18, 25-17, 23-25, 17-25, 15-12) at No. 2 in the nation and No. 1 seed Ohio State.

It was Lewis’ fifth consecutive trip to the MIVA title match.

The first two sets were all Ohio State. It seemed Buckeyes were on their way to a MIVA title. But not so fast. Even after Ohio State took a 13-11 lead in the third with back-to-back aces, the Flyers didn’t back down. They tied it at 15 on an ace by junior John Hodul (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg). A kill by Weiskircher followed to put Lewis up 16-15. Later in the set, down 22-20, Lewis finished the frame on a 5-3 run to win the set.

Lewis controlled the fourth set, out-hitting the Buckeyes .333 to .057. Perinar had five kills in the set.

Lewis’ only lead in the fifth set came at 1-0, but the Flyers tied it six times.

They rallied from a 9-6 deficit to tie it for the final time at 11 on a kill by Perinar. But the Buckeyes put it away with a 4-1 run to take the match. Christian Franceschi found the sideline on an ace for point 15.

“We put our selves in a position in the fifth game,” Friend said.

“We weren’t bad in the fifth, we just made a couple errors.”

Ohio State out-hit Lewis .293 to .260. The Flyers out-blocked Ohio State 10-7. The Buckeyes held a 45-38 edge in digs. Lewis committed 25 service errors to Ohio State’s 21.

Perinar finished with 17 kills and 7 digs. Moses had 13 kills, six digs and three blocks. Bobby Walsh finished with eight kills and six blocks (one solo) in his final match as a Flyer. Walsh and Perinar were named to the 2016 MIVA All-Tournament Team.
