Romeoville reviews concept plan for Weber Road car dealership Construction expected to begin this fall By laura katauskas staff reporter

A new state-of-the-art Toyota dealership will be making its way to Weber Road.

A concept plan was recently introduced by Thomas Toyota to the Romeoville village board for a 46,000-square-foot building with a showroom, sales area, service areas and office space. The 5.8 acre site, now vacant, is to be located at the southwest corner of Weber Road and Grand Haven Circle, and is part of the Rose Plaza subdivision that was approved in 2005 and zoned as B-3 highway regional shopping.

“Thomas Toyota has been great to work with and we are very excited to see this project progress,” said Mayor John Noak.

“A dealership of this stature is just what the Weber Road Corridor needs.”

Trustee Sue Micklevitz asked if there were any traffic concerns at that light.

Village Manager Steve Gulden reported that traffic counts were made initially at the time of the construction of Rose Plaza, anticipating a large retailer to take space at that site. Gulden explained that the plan accommodates for a heavier traffic flow than what is expected from Toyota and the apartment complex being built

behind the proposed dealership.

Considering the close proximity of the dealership and the apartment building, Trustee Dave Richards cautioned that as the design phases moves forward, landscaping and trash enclosures should be considered.

Noak noted these were initial plans and that Romeoville Toyota would be developing more detailed plans over the next few months.

“This opens a lot of opportunities to the village and the community and will hopefully attract more business and solidify the Weber Road corridor, “ said Noak.

Construction is expected to begin this fall.

Though still under a careful eye by watchdog groups, ComEd’s Smart Grid and system improvement work is starting to reap results.

ComEd recently released data showing that residents and businesses in Bolingbrook saw a 39 percent decrease in outage frequency and a 43 percent decrease in outage duration in 2015.

ComEd reported that nearly 12,000 customer interruptions were avoided in Bolingbrook since 2012 thanks to distribution automation, or smart switches, which reroutes power around trouble spots.

In addition, 92 percent of Bolingbrook residents experienced zero or one interruption, while more than 60 percent had no outage at all in 2015. Overall, ComEd said Bolingbrook residents experienced a 99.99 percent reliability rate last year.

According to the Citizens Utility Board the “smart grid” is technically all the equipment – power lines, wires, etc. – needed to upgrade ComEd’s entire system. Before the smart grid, the system was on oneway communication.

A smart grid is based on two-way communication, allowing “smart meters” to automatically alert the utility of costly problems, and consumers to take advantage of optional pricing plans that could cut their costs.

“The technology underlying the old power grid has hardly changed in over 100 years, so we are in need of a power grid revamp,” said Jim Chilsen, spokesman for CUB. “If done right, these power grid upgrades should pay for themselves through customer benefits. But we have a long road to travel, and our job is to make sure ComEd lives up to its promise of building a better power grid.

According to ComEd, the smart grid was designed to save Illinois consumers money by reducing power outages and energy waste.

“When we began our smart grid work, we promised our customers that they would see an improvement in the reliability in their electric service, and we are delivering on that promise in Bolingbrook and throughout our service territory,” said Terrence Donnelly, executive vice president and chief operating officer. “ComEd has achieved record levels of reliability the last three years – ranking us in the top 10 percent of utilities nationally – and has one of the nation’s leading smart grid programs, leading our region to economic prowess in the digital economy.”

The Smart Grid law passed by the Illinois General Assembly in 2011 allowed ComEd to take on a $2.6 billion program to modernize the power system in northern Illinois.

The legislation allowed ComEd to make the upgrades to the power grid over the next decade, and creates a new regulatory framework under which consumers pay for those upgrades.

CUB originally opposed the idea due to fears that consumer would front the bill.

“The Energy Infrastructure and Modernization Act allows ComEd and Ameren to make a total of about $3 billion in upgrades to Illinois’ power grid over the next several years,” Chilsen added. “It creates a

new regulatory framework under which consumers pay for these upgrades.”

CUB opposed the legislation because the group thought it needed stronger consumer protections against rate hikes.

“We do believe these upgrades have the potential to significantly benefit consumers, so our job moving forward will be making sure customers receive the maximum benefits of a modernized power grid—and not just the bill,” Chilsen said.

Now, ComEd filed for a $138 million rate hike April 13.

The increase would take effect Jan. 1, 2017. CUB is planning to review ComEd’s proposal in order to eliminate what it calls “wasteful spending” and reduce the rate increase as much as possible.

“ComEd has launched historic improvements to the power grid that have the potential to benefit all customers, but that doesn’t mean the company should get more money than it can justify.

We will continue to hold Illinois’ biggest electric utility accountable and push it to stay true to its responsibility of building a more efficient and reliable power grid,” officials said in a statement regarding the hike.

According to CUB, under the formula rate process, ComEd customers received a $67 million rate decrease this past January, and rate hikes of about $340 million

This free event closes out the 2016 Great Read community literacy program, which celebrates everything “Made in Illinois.” The Grand Finale is open to the entire community.

Along with Frenzel’s program, the winners of the Great Read Art Contest will be announced.

Actors from Lockport’s Limestone Theater will also perform Illinoisbased readings, while books about Illinois trivia will be given away. Refreshments will be served.

Frenzel is a Chicago suburban school teacher who used film

clips to illustrate key points in his lessons. Seeing students’ excited reactions to the clips, he decided to turn his personal love for the cinema into a film appreciation class. That class soon morphed into the popular interactive film presentations that he has been doing at schools, libraries, senior centers and other Chicago-area organizations for more than 16 years.

The 2016 Great Read is presented by a consortium of Plainfield-area public and private organizations to promote literacy, reading, conversation and community in the greater Plainfield area. Great Read’s partners include Plainfield School District 202, the Plainfield Public Library, Joliet Public Library, Fountaindale Public Library, Lemont Public Library, Shorewood-Troy Public Library, White Oak Library District, Joliet Junior College, Plainfield Township, the Joliet-area Barnes & Noble store and Voyager Media.

As part of the program, community members are encouraged to read books about Illinois. Great Read-related programs will continue through May. Suggested books for both adults and younger readers, as well as films and a listing of events are posted on the Great Read website, www.greatread. org.

Jane Addams secures Pythagoras Trophy Trophy earned at Valley View School District’s Math Contest

Jane Addams Middle School is the 2016 Valley View School District 365U Middle School Mathematics Contest champion.

The Mustangs earned the coveted Pythagoras Trophy with a solid overall performance in all categories Thursday evening, including a tie for second in both the sixth grade and seventh grade group competitions, a second place finish in group algebra, and a first place in the eighth grade group competition.

Martinez Middle School won the sixth grade group competition.

Deadline to apply for free Lions, VVSD team up to provide vision screenings Discovery Academy nears Academy designed to foster interest in scientific, tech fields Valley View School District 365U seventh and eighth graders have until April 26 to submit their applications for a free two-week science, technology, engineering and math day camp this summer.

Discovery Academy, which is being offered through a partnership between VVSD, Joliet Junior College and Illinois State University, is designed to foster skills, confidence, and interest in scientific and technological fields.

Discovery Scholars will engage in amazing hands-on activities while developing technical skills necessary to be successful in their post-secondary lives. They will learn how to create an app for a mobile device, develop a video game, build a website, explore careers and colleges, and discover the joy and excitement of science.

“Middle school is a ‘make or break’ moment when it comes to interest in STEM fields,” said Dr. Rebekka Darner Gougis, Director of the Illinois State University Noyce Scholarship Program.

“Elementary school students love science and math. When they reach middle school, something happens. Either their love is reinforced, or children, especially girls and minority students, begin to dislike these subjects.”

Discovery Academy is open to VVSD students currently in seventh or eighth grade.The camp runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 20 to July 1 at Bolingbrook High School. Lunch will be provided.

There is no cost to participants thanks to a grant from the National Science Foundation.

Bolingbrook Lions Foundation will help Valley View School District screen every incoming kindergarten student

Beginning with the 2017-18 school year, the Bolingbrook Lions Foundation will help Valley View School District 365U screen the vision of every incoming kindergarten student.

“Every child deserves to learn and see the world clearly,” said Bolingbrook Lions Club President Mick Kozy at the March 28 VVSD School Board meeting as he detailed plans for a nearly $5,000 Lions KidSight USA grant to fund the screening.

Kozy indicated the Bolingbrook Lions Foundation has already purchased the computerized screening equipment and is now in the process of planning for the funding and logistics of the project.

“According to educational experts, 80 percent of learning is visual, so if a child can’t see well, he can’t learn well,” Kozy told school

Carillon prepares for 2016 spring tornado season New Federal Signal Corporation 508 weather alarm installed in Carillon On Aug. 28, 1990, one of the most severe tornadoes in Illinois history went through Plainfield causing more than 140 million dollars of damage in surrounding areas.

As recorded by the U.S. Weather Service, May/June/July are the most prevalent months for tornado activity in Plainfield, even though the area’s potential risk factor is rated relatively low.

According to the homeowners association - Carillon Adult Master Association in late 2015, a new Federal Signal Corporation 508 weather alarm was installed in Carillon that will improve early warning of pending weather dangers for its residents.

It generates a high decibel level in a 500 Hz tone for significant improvement over the earlier alert system.

The new siren can better be heard both inside and outside residences throughout the community because the lower audible frequency is more easily detected by the human ear.

This alarm signal can travel a full mile and benefit some of the neighboring communities.

The siren will activate

through direct tie into the Romeoville municipal emergency warning system.

CAMA officials said the group worked diligently to prepare for the spring season. Realizing potential dangers and the need to keep its residents safe, CAMA began a study of their audible early warning alert system in late 2014.

Extensive studies were

completed for potential equipment improvements, optimum siren locations,budgetaryconsiderations, and most importantly, improvement in resident safety.

An expenditure was approved in

2015 by the CAMA Board to pay $35,500 for a new state-of-the-art early warning system. The system was completely installed and then tested successfully in February 2016.

Delivery charges take up about a third to a half of the bill The rest of the bill is taken up by the cost of the electricity itself.

Delivery rates are now set by the “smart-grid bill.”

Illinois’ new way of setting electric rates limits how much consumer advocates and regulators can protect customers from rate increases, but each year CUB works to secure the lowest rates possible by reviewing ComEd’s spending, and protesting unjustified capital and operational expenditures.

Since the legislation had passed, the consumer group said its job now is to educate consumers about how they can benefit from the upgrades and will “ act as a watchdog to make sure ComEd and Ameren improve the power grid in a way that actually helps consumers.”

ComEd stated that through

investments in smart switches that reroute power around potential problem areas, new storm hardening and vegetation management solutions, and cable replacement, as well as other system improvement programs, more than five million customer interruptions were avoided since 2012.

Last year alone, more than 1.5 million interruptions did not occur because of these improvements.

ComEd began installing smart meters in 2013 and will continue to do so throughout 2018, installing four million digital smart meters across its entire service territory.

There are no dials on a smart meter and it does not require a utility worker to come out to read.

The meter has a digital face, and unlike traditional meters, it can automatically send a consumer’s power usage to a utility. Smart meters would eliminate estimated bills.

The smart meter also alerts the company of an outage immediately, where as before the smart grid, the power company may not have known until notified by customers.

The consumer watchdog also is pushing the utility to live up to its promise to build a more affordable power grid that reduces inefficiency, improves reliability and gives customers the chance to save money by making their homes more efficient and taking part in money-saving electricity programs.

CUB wants to educate consumers on how to take advantage of the smart meter--and encourage customers to check out new pricing plans that could lower their bill. The smart grid should give customers more control over their power bills.

According to CUB, even a small reduction of “peak demand” would make a big difference in a customer’s bill. CUB is encouraging any customer with digital smart meter to enroll in peak time savings which begins this summer.

Call ComEd at 1-844-852-0347, or visit the “Peak Time Savings” page to enroll. Under the program, ComEd gives you a bill credit for reducing electricity use during “peak times” on a few summer days when power demand is highest.

The Peak Time Savings credit will appear as dollars off your total amount due in the “Miscellaneous” section of your bill.

The amount you earn back will be based on your typical usage compared with what you used during one of these peak times.

“Peak Time Savings Hours” are periods on hot summer days when ComEd will give participants the option of delaying heavy power usage to earn bill credits.

More than 1,600 years ago, St. Augustine recognized how much we fear selfreflection when he noted, “People travel to wonder at the height of mountains, at the huge waves of the sea, at the long courses of rivers, at the vast compass of the ocean, at the circular motion of the stars; and they pass by themselves without wondering.

Socrates kept things even simpler, encouraging his followers to “know thyself.”

Yet making the effort to explore what happens between our ears is a frightening endeavor. We worry that we won’t like what we find, and taking the time for self-exploration sounds about as fun as cleaning a dirty garage.

There’s also the issue of how to go about beginning the process. You might find yourself confused about how to get started, like the difficulty many find with trying to meditate for the first time. Consider using resources such as books and websites. For example, the website PsychCentral offers a list of prompts for daily self-reflection, while numerous authors have published self-help workbooks on the topic with prompts to jumpstart your quest. You might also consider taking a page from one of the most widespread and

effective support groups ever known. step by step In the 1930s, Alcoholics Anonymous was just getting started, and the group managed to do what no doctors or psychologists at the time could – find a solution to alcoholism. The program was built around 12 steps, the same steps that exist today. Although the program was designed for people with a drinking problem, many have noted that almost anyone can benefit from doing these steps.

The fourth step in the AA program addresses the notoriously intimidating project of self-examination. People working the steps sometimes move through steps one through three like a checklist, stating their agreement with the ideas and then moving on.

In theory, this works because the first three steps, while absolutely critical, do not require as much tangible evidence of their completion.

And, then comes step four: Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves. Doing this step requires considerable thought, reflection, writing, remembering, and above all, discomfort. Yet, the growth that can be found on the other side is a genuine gift.

Take the good with the bad Unpacking old events and memories can produce many emotions, both

negative and positive. The point of looking inside is not to relive old hurts, but rather to see what’s really there so we can change the parts that continue to be roadblocks. Patterns of harmful behavior become evident, which then empowers us to make more effective choices.

It’s also important to include our strengths and positive attributes when we take an inventory. Here we can confirm the traits we like about ourselves and the accomplishments of our lives. A lot of people think they have to beat themselves up in order to do an effective inventory, and this simply isn’t the case. A thorough inventory includes the good, the bad and the ugly.

Count your blessings, literally Another powerful tool is making a gratitude list. This is a simple way of acknowledging the things in our life – great and small – for which we are thankful. Set a goal for how many things you want to name, and then start writing. Coming up with 20, 50 or even 100 items is easier than you imagine.

If you want to take this experience a step further, you can incorporate the gratitude list into a daily routine, such as journaling, prayer or meditation. In this way, self-reflection becomes a less intimidating task. As I believe is the case for anyone making a change, you have to do what works for you. There is not a single right way to engage in selfexamination, and the process is about progress, not perfection. And if you learn even one thing about yourself in that process, I’d say it’s worth it.

Zack attack is back for Romeoville Junior ace Jeffrey Zack made his first start of the season for RHS

The Southwest Prairie Conference has some of the best pitchers in the Joliet area with the likes of Plainfield North’s Brady Corrigan and Minooka’s Joe Butler to name a pair.

A name that has earned its way onto that list is Romeoville junior Jeffrey Zack.

The Tulane University recruit made his first start of the season last week opposite of Corrigan and despite taking the loss to the Tigers, impressed his coach with his outing.

“This was his first start of the year. It was a very good outing and probably the best I’ve seen him throw,” said Romeoville coach Dave Haskins. “It was nice to have him back and it’s nice that Kyle (Massaro) doesn’t have to put the team on his back. We have a nice one-two punch and we have to keep on building up our three, four, five. We have good options for conference and in the playoffs, we have two guys who can go with playoff experience and we are excited about that.”

Zack was happy with the outing.

“It is great,” Zack said about

facing Corrigan. “I love to compete and it really amps you up when you know there is another beast on the mound.

Our defense played well and I could just stay down, throw low.

I felt really good out there and be able to get out there and sling it again.”

Romeoville will look to some young arms in the bullpen this season.

“We think Tyler Horvath and Zack Swearinen can do a nice job,” Haskins said. “They have thrown the ball well for us and they are both sophomores. They are learning and getting better.

The mentality and the whole mind set is different at the varsity level.”

While the Spartans are getting their staff back in order, it is the offense that Haskins is now looking to get going.

“Our offense is struggling, but we have faced a lot of Division-I or Division-II pitchers, but that is good for us,” Haskins said. “It’s good competition.

“Kyle Massaro and Matthew Bottcher have been hitting well.

Guadalupe wins Golden Gloves title

Céline Guadalupe defeated Nitza Valencia for the Golden Gloves title.

Marcelo Valencia, the Head Trainer of Valencia Boxing, has finally attained a Golden Gloves Championship for Bolingbrook. On April 8, 16-yearold Céline “Sizzle Leen” Guadalupe won a third round decision over 20-year-old Nitza Valencia (also a Valencia boxer) at the Chicago Golden Gloves Tournament at 119 pounds.

Céline has been training with Valencia Boxing since April 2015, and is the 2016 125 pound category, Novice Division Champion.

The Golden Gloves Tournament is one of, if not the most well known boxing tournaments in the United States. The winners and their gyms are posted on the Golden Gloves national website.

Designated as a Novice Division participant, Celine can only compete at the state level. Though Celine can not compete for the national championship, she is still recognized as a champion. This victory makes the Bolingbrook Community a producer of a Golden Gloves champion.

This Golden Gloves achievement represents the first in the Senior Novice Division. Other Valencia Boxing members who have fought in the Golden Gloves includes Elvis Cervantes (open senior division), Juan Ceja, Giovani Cajero, Carlos Escamilla (2014 novice finalist), Fernando Mondragon, and Nitza Valencia (2016 finalist).

Spartans showing improvement

Romeoville has played well as of late, taking top teams to the wire.

So far this season the Romeoville boys volleyball team is showing solid improvement, but needs to get off to better starts.

That was evident in a recent loss to Plainfield Central where it lost the first set 25-13 before taking the Wildcats to the wire, falling 29-27 in the second set.

“We’re a very giving team in terms of spotting teams and then fighting back,” Romeoville coach Deb Fehrenbacher said. “I would like to see us come out with quicker starts and more intensity so we are not such a giving squad.

They have a lot of fight in them.”

One disadvantage for the Spartans is their lack of height.

That is especially difficult defensively when trying to put up a strong block.

“We work really hard on blocking and getting up every day,” Fehrenbacher said. “We get a lot of touches. We did really well against Oswego on blocks and adjusting to their big middle and outside. It is something that we

work on and realize we have to play defense.”

section in the 1,500-meter run with a NCAA Provisional and personal best time of 4:30.42.

The Flyers notched three NCAA Provisional marks In the triple jump from freshman Cierra Pulliam (Plainfield, Ill./ Romeoville), sophomore Keanu Taylor (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bradley-

Bourbonnais) and senior Amber Cook (Grayslake, Ill./Warren Township).

Pulliam jumped 39’9 1/4” (12.12m), while Taylor uncorked a personal-best and NCAA Provisional triple jump of 38’8 1/4” (11.79m).

Cook jumped 38’7” (11.76m).

“We had a great meet today to cap off the weekend,” Lewis head women’s track and field coach Dana Schwarting said. “I thought everyone did a great job and we hit almost every national mark we were looking for.

“We set ourselves up for a great push towards conference.”

“They are used to playing kids that are taller than them and making adjustments,” Fehrenbacher said. “It is about finding the angles.”

The season has been a roller coaster so far for the Spartans.

“We did well in the Plainfield North Tournament and the Glenbard East Tournament is a tough tournament against some of the top teams in the state,” Fehrenbacher said. “We have our moments where we look great and

other moments not so great. It is a lot of up and down.”

Moving forward, Romeoville not only wants to finish better than last year, it wants to break the .500 barrier for the season.

“We definitely want to improve

on where we were last year in terms of record,” Fehrenbacher said. “We want to come out in every match ready to go and compete. We would like to be better than .500, especially in a tough conference.”

Romeoville is also getting help from a freshman in an important spot on the field.

“Julio Cajigas is our freshman starting catcher and he has been swinging the ball real well,” Haskins said. “We started him off at ninth in the lineup and he has

worked his way to fifth or sixth.

He is a talented young kid. He is a special kid and he can be a great one. He is 14 years old and he has a great mindset and he doesn’t back down from anyone.”

Haskins hopes by the time the playoffs arrive, the Spartans will

be where they need to compete.

“We always talk that we have to play our best baseball in May and we are getting better,” he said. “Our goals are to win two of every three in conference and more important to be playing our best baseball in May. We never

want to be one and done in the playoffs and, knock on wood, we never have been one and done, but they know although our record isn’t the best right now, we are getting there. We know we will see some of the best in the state and come playoff time.”

Dear Dave, My husband and I are just starting to get control of our finances, but we have a problem.

My dad has a habit of expecting us to buy things for him. I know he has money, but anytime he knows we’re going to the store, he gives us a list of things he wants. If he’s with us, he just throws things in the cart and expects us to pay. He acts like we have an obligation to do all this for him. I love my dad, but this has become annoying. What can we do?

Christina Dear Christina, I know you love your dad, but he sounds like the kind of guy who doesn’t really respect boundaries. And these kinds of folks, as a rule, don’t like it when they’re suddenly confronted with them. Regardless, you need to have a firm but loving talk with your dad. Let him know how much he means to both of you, but remind him that you

and your husband are working hard to get into better financial shape. This means you can’t spend more than is absolutely necessary. If he’s hungry, have him over for dinner. If he just needs one or two small things, that’s not such a big deal. But you’re not obligated to pay his way just because he’s your dad.

Like I said, he may or may not like this conversation. He may fuss and throw a little fit, but at that point it becomes his problem, not yours. Chances are he’ll come around in a week or so, and after he gets over the embarrassment of it all, everything will be all right again.

You aren’t an unloving or ungrateful daughter for not letting him run all over you. Talk to him in a kind, respectful way.

If you feel you can’t stand up to him alone, ask your husband to lend support or put a voice to your wishes.
