Bolingbrook native Ivlow inducted into PHS Hall of Fame Through sports and serving his community, Ivlow has set a great example for positivity and success in the city of Bolingbrook

John Ivlow is a man of many talents.

Recently, Ivlow was honored in the District 202 Alumni Hall of Fame for Plainfield High School — Now Plainfield Central.

Specifically, Ivlow was awarded for government, military, sports and recreation.

Whether it was joining the Bolingbrook Police Department as a patrolman or coaching at Bolingbrook High School, Ivlow said a lot of his success stems from his parents and Bolingbrook Mayor Roger C. Claar.

“First, my mom didn’t go to work until I was 18, so with her

being around that was one way I stayed out of trouble,” Ivlow said jokingly. “My father has taught at Plainfield Central since the 1960s, so with him also being around a lot that really helped me keep my head on straight.”

For Claar, Ivlow said it was him who got him the job as both the policeman and a foot in the door at Bolingbrook High School to become the head football coach.

Ivlow had success in sports before Bolingbrook. After high school, he attended Northwestern University and Colorado State where he played football at both schools.

In 1992, while attending CSU, Ivlow was rated the 39th best rusher in the Western Athletic Conference and No. 5 for rushing

Algebra competitions.

In the individual competitions, Brooks ran the table with wins by Tejas Patnaik (6th grade), Aaron Demille (7th grade), Rickard Demille (8th grade), and Jazmyne Germo (Algebra). The other group competition winners were A.Vito Martinez (7th grade), Lukancic (8th grade), and Jane Addams (Algebra).

“As I said before, between my parents and the Mayor, I was also taught at a young age that if you’re going to do something, then do it with first class,” Ivlow said. “That has always just stuck with me through the years.”

Ms. Kocur not only looks to improve her professional practice but the program as well. She is currently a member of the STEP Building Impact Team and the Spirit Club.

The Big Serve seeks volunteers; Project will serve the community May 4 and 5

The Big Serve is seeking volunteers to improve things for their neighbors, their community and the world.

The Big Serve has several projects scheduled for the weekend of May 4 and 5.

Coordinator Scott Long said putting one push toward helping different groups can benefit everyone.

“It gives the people in the community an opportunity to serve and give back locally, I feel a lot of volunteers get more out of it than those being assisted,” Long said.

The event began more than five years ago when groups at

Community Christian Church and Plainfield United Methodist Church both planned volunteer events and realized working together would be more effective.

Other churches, including Hope United Methodist Church, St. Mary Immaculate Parish, AlAqsa Community, Masjid Maraj and the Village of Plainfield are among those organizations participating this year.

The different faiths believe coming together to ignore “boundaries” and focus on what they have in common - service to the needy - is a way of living their faith.

Projects are available for every age and skill level, so the weekend can be a chance for families to spend time together, Long said.

Birthday Giving Program helps locals enjoy their special day Sonika Menon started program to help those in need celebrate

What makes a good birthday?

The number of presents? Who is there to celebrate? Just knowing people are thinking about you?

Sonika Menon has had 15 birthdays herself, but the Plainfield teen has made them special for many people.

In May 2017, Sonika was thinking about how some children are not fortunate enough to receive gifts or parties and felt compelled to do something about it. Using

donations from her family, Sonika created The Birthday Giving Program and began working with local service organizations to find needy recipients.

“The first birthday we had was a 3-year-old boy whose family didn’t have much,” Sonika recalled. “We wrapped a plastic box with some presents and made a cake. To see the happiness in his face was great. His mom was really surprised (because) she’d never had the opportunity to do this.”

The Birthday Giving Program is now a 501c3 nonprofit which provides birthday bags and celebrations to those affected by poverty, addiction, homelessness and physical and mental disabilities.

Sonika’s cousin, Rinna Talwar, expanded the organization to also benefit seniors and veterans who

may face the same challenges.

In two years, Birthday Giving has raised money through online donations and local fundraising.

They’ve delivered more than 750 birthday bags and baked more than 150 cakes.

“We get the name, age and gender from (charity) directors and sometimes their likes and dislikes.

Sometimes we get to meet them and sometimes for security we just drop them off,” Sonika said.

While separate from birthdays, they’ve also put together Welcome Boxes for children forced to find accommodations in homeless shelters. The Welcome Boxes contain a stuffed animal, a children’s story and a snack.

“My brother manages our inventory and makes sure the cake mix doesn’t expire,” Sonika said.

“We’ve all gotten very good at baking cakes,” Rinna added.

The Birthday Giving Program has provided celebrations for individuals who have used Abbington Nursing Home, Alden Village, Boys and Girls Club of Joliet, Bridge Communities, Calvary Church, Deborah’s Place, Fellowship Housing, Gigi’s Playhouse, Hansard Center, HELPS Ministry, Lakeview Memory Care, Lifespring Ministry, Marklund Home Bloomingdale, MorningStar Mission, Mutual Ground, Streetwise, Wayside Cross Ministries, Wheatland Salem Church and the Individual Advocacy Groups of Bloomingdale, Glendale Heights, Oswego and Romeoville.

After the Birthday Giving Program was featured on CNN, as-

sociated chapters have started in California, Florida, Idaho and Tennessee.

Last month, Sonika and Rinna were recognized with Governors Awards, but both said seeing the effect the bags and cake have on people’s spirits gives them the most satisfaction.

“That sense of togetherness... when everyone gets to join in celebration has warmed my heart,” Sonika said.

Both teens believe their future careers will involve helping others.

Locals help Flyers women’s track team to third consecutive win

Lewis’ women’s track and field team won its third consecutive meet on Saturday winning the Benedictine Relays with a team score of 143 points. The Flyers won eight events at the two-day competition.

Ashleigh Macleod (Mishawaka, IN/Penn) won the 800 meter run with a time of 2:13.41 winning the race by over five seconds.

Kassady Learn (San Diego, CA/ Rancho Bernardo) won the 1,500 meter run crossing the line in a time of 4:49.85.

Lewis’ 4x100 meter relay team of Cierra Pulliam (Plainfield, Ill./ Romeoville), Carrie Johnson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake HS), Jada Hoffman (Chicago, Ill./ Kenwood Academy) and Joelle Ataessien (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young HS) won the race with a time of 46.89 seconds.

Pulliam won the long jump with a leap of 5.92 meters while Anna Laudizio (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) was third with a jump of 5.39 meters. Alecea Cardillo () and Abbey Galusha (Williamsville, Ill./ Williamsville, HS) finished seventh and eighth respectively in the event with jumps of 4.95 meters and 4.88 meters.

Laudizio claimed the top spot in the triple jump with a jump of 11.72 meters while Cardillo was sixth with a leap of 10.85 meters.

Lane Kadlec (Lockport, Ill./ Lockport) set a school record in the shot put with a heave of 14.97 meters and Kylie Wymer (Rock Island, Ill./Rock Island) took sev-

enth in the event with a toss of 11.99 meters.

Kadlec also won the discus with a throw of 42.90 meters and Alyssa Betlejeski finished fifth in the event with a throw of 38.23 meters.

Kianna Clark (Lake in the Hills, Ill./Crystal Lake South) finished in a tie for second in the hammer throw with a heave of 52.16 meters.

Jamie Poppen (Ballwin, Mo./ Parkway West) took fifth in the pole vault clearing a height of 3.20 meters.

Allison Mack (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park HS) and Azana Clark-Jordan (Plano, Ill./Whitney Young HS) finished third and fourth respectively in the 400 meter hurdles with times of 1:11.01 and 1:11.75.

Ataessien and Clark-Jordan finished back-to-back in the 100 meter hurdles. Ataessien crossed the line at 15.28 seconds while ClarkJordan finished at 15.35 seconds.

Macleod also took sixth in the 400 meter dash in a time of 59.47 seconds while Heather Batterham finished seventh at 59.83 seconds.

Teresa Zaragueta (Spain) and Vivica Phillips (Plainfield, Ill./ Plainfield South HS) took fourth and eighth in the 200 meter dash with times of 25.83 seconds and 26.56 seconds respectively.

Hoffman, Johnson and Zaragueta finished in the top eight in the 100 meter dash. Hoffman finished second in a time of 12.52 seconds.

Johnson was fifth at 12.75 seconds and Zaragueta came in eighth at 12.93 seconds.

Raiders fall to Lockport seven

With respect, to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer’s 1960 movie classic, “The Magnificent 7”, on April 10, at Route 66 Stadium, Lockport coach Andy Satunas, sent out his version of “the magnificent seven” In Lockport’s 2019 Southwest Suburban Conference Blue opener with Bolingbrook, Satunas sent seven different pitchers out to pitch in the 8-0 Porter victory.

Nolan Weis, John Gallet, Jon Weis, Vince Sartori, Justin Gas-

per, Joe Tor and Porter closer, Jake Kampf, all pitched an inning. the magnificent seven combined for a five-hit shutout of the Raiders (6-10, 0-1). The seven, combined for nine strikeouts and three walks.

Nolan Weis was the winning pitcher for the Porters who improve to 16-2 overall and 1-0 in the SWSC-Blue.

For the third time this season, the Porters’ seven (3-0), all pitched an inning and the Porters, were victorious.

“I am so blessed to have so many quality pitchers, which allows me to have this option, for

my game plan,” Satunas said.

“We have now played 18 games and Nolan Weis leads our staff with just 13 innings pitched this season. Everyone on our entire roster has been instrumental in our amazing 16-2 start to the season. We continue to be a total family. With everyone succeeding the success breeds confidence for everyone, which makes us very difficult to beat.

“Our real test will be how we handle adversity, when it happens. With the strength of the Southwest Suburban Blue, there will be times, when we are faced with it. Our ability to handle

that adversity, will define how successful we will be, in 2019.”

In the 8-0 win over the Raiders, 23 Porters played — a total team victory.

The Porters picked up a pair of unearned runs in the top of the first against Raider starting pitcher Matt Dinkel.

Weis led off the game, reaching first on a dropped third strike, sophomore Ryan Moerman walked.

With one out, Weis and Moerman perfected a double steal and Weis scored on an errant throw to third. With Moerman on third, Kampf,’s sac-fly put the Porters up 2-0.

In the top of the third, Bolingbrooks’ Armond Morales ( 1-for3) ripped a laser to Weis in right.

The ball was hit so hard, that Weis threw a strike to the Porter first baseman, for the old 9-3 putout, for the first out of the inning. It was the second time this season, that Nolan Weis. has thrown out a baserunner at first, from right field, erasing a base-hit.

Dinkel had settled in, striking out five Porter hitters, through the first three innings.

Dinkel walked Collin Woulfe and Nick Schindler, with two outs. Porter left fielder Jackson Mladic ripped a clutc, two-out RBI single for a 3-0 Porter lead.

“I had the pleasure to watch the seven-pitcher, combined five-hit shutout,” Mladic said.

“I didn’t get to field anything today, which is a credit to all of our pitchers. We have total confidence in everyone of our pitchers. In the spot in the fourth, we had two outs and I had to do whatever it took, to help us win.”

Weis followed with another two-out, two run double, for a 5-0 Porter lead.

The Porters put the game away with two runs on RBI singles from Kampf and senior Josh Bentley.

In the bottom of the seventh, Kampf would end the game with a flourish, striking out the final Raider hitter in the 8-0 Porter win.

“We all went out and threw strikes and trusted in our great defense,” Kampf said. “ With a runner on third and one out, I just try to hit the ball to the right side. I was able to get the ball in the air deep enough, to get the run home. After every game, 1-0.”

The Raiders were led by sophomore, third baseman, Dave Underdonk, who had a pair of singles.

“We had some scoring chances that we didn’t take advantage of.” Undernook said. “We made too many mistakes. I was happy to hit the ball hard all day.”

For first-year Bolingbrook coach Mike Romero, facing Lockport’s magnificent seven was an interesting experience.

“That’s quite a luxury for Lockport to have so many quality pitchers,” Romero said. “They forced us to have to readjust to a different pitcher, every inning.

It really made it difficult for our offense. I though we did a good job considering but we didn’t follow through, on a couple of scoring opportunities, that we did have.”

“We’ve really been up and down so far this season. We beat a very good Joliet West team.

The SWSC Blue will be our real test, to see where we stand.”

The Joliet Slammers are excited to announce several stadium upgrades that will augment the fan experience in 2019 and beyond. We thank the City of Joliet for their strong support in making these projects happen.

On the concourse level, fans will enjoy updated restroom facilities. In the women’s restrooms, the countertops have been removed and replaced with brand new sinks (the men’s sinks and countertops are scheduled for the same in 2020). In both the men’s and women’s restrooms, a fresh coat of paint has been added and the floors have been updated.

Also new in 2019 is a playground set from Rainbow Play Systems of Illinois. Kids will be able to enjoy slides, tunnels, rock walls, a ship’s wheel, tic-tac-toe, and more with the new playground set.

There will also be an Adult Fun Zone located near the third base

bar that will include numerous yard games.

The Suites have undergone several improvements during the offseason as well.

A carpet treatment has the carpets looking brand new.

The suites have also received a fresh coat of paint and the furniture has been updated.

Suites can be rented out on an annual or game by game basis by companies or individuals for a private, climate controlled atmosphere when attending Slammers games.

Following the path of Major League Baseball, the protective netting has been extended to the end of each dugout.

Fan safety is a number one priority and the team wants all fans to feel safe when enjoying a game at Joliet Route 66 Stadium. The main passenger elevator has also received a complete overhaul.

Although fans might recognize

the car, everything else on the main elevator has been replaced and updated.

Team majority owner Nick Semaca said, “Along with these upgrades, in conjunction with the expanded promotional calendar already announced, the 2018 Frontier League Champion Joliet Slammers are very excited about the 2019 season and I know our fans will be too.

Advance ticket sales are already ahead of plan so I advise fans to get their tickets now before the best dates sell out.”

Opening Night is May 9 and will feature a celebration of the team’s 2018 Championship, including the presentation of Championship rings to the team.

Be intentional with your time outside work DEAR DAVE, As a business owner, how do you find a life balance between work and home? I have my own small business, and sometimes I feel like I’m putting in too much time at the shop and not spending enough time with my husband and kids.

MOLLY DEAR MOLLY, The idea of everything being in balance, on an everyday basis, is a myth. It’s simply not possible to perfectly juggle every aspect of our lives every single day.

The key, I think, is to strive for an overall balance over time. You know first-hand the long hours and how work can interfere with other things if you’re not careful. The answer lies in really being into whatever you’re doing.

When you’re not at your shop or taking care of work-related matters, actively participate in conversations with your spouse and kids—and listen. Spend time with them! Turn off your cell phone when you go on dates with your husband and when

you take your kids on outings.

When you’re with your family you should really be with them. Then, when you have to work, chances are they won’t be so upset, and you’ll feel better about things, too!

—DAVE DEAR DAVE, Our son is 17, and he is in school.

He has a good part-time job, and my wife and I started teaching him basic money management at a young age. He understands the importance of saving, giving, and spending, plus he is setting aside money for technical school after he graduates from high school. Do you think it would

be an appropriate real-world exercise if we started charging him a very small amount in rent each month to prepare him for life when he leaves home?

BARRY DEAR BARRY, I appreciate the fact that you’re looking for teachable moments, but I really think charging a teenager rent while he’s living at home is going too far. Now, if he was 28 or 29, that’d be a different story. But as parents, it’s still your responsibility to provide a home for your 17-year-old child.

It sounds like you’ve done a fantastic job already of helping your son grow into a responsible young man.

He knows how to work, and he has grasped the basic concepts of managing money. I meet people three times his age on a regular basis who still haven’t done that. With this kind of start, I’ve got a feeling your kid will be fine.

I also think, with this kind of start, he has a great chance of becoming wealthy some day!

Kindergarten Enrollment Now Open

VVSD is welcoming the Class of 2032 during Kindergarten enrollment for the 2019-20 school year.

It’s Theatre Season In Valley View

A. Vito Martinez Middle School presents A Night of One Act Plays on Fri. Apr. 26 at 7 pm. Among the offerings will be “10 Reasons You Should Have Stayed Home Sick Today” and “The Internet is a Distract- OH LOOK A KITTEN!” The performing arts students at Lukancic Middle School present “The Network” May 2-4 at 6:30 pm in the Lukancic Auditorium. Tickets are $4 for adults and $3 for children. “The Network” is a look at the changing world and the impact that social networks have on our society.
