Valley View reviews school fees

In a committee review of school fees, the Valley View School District 365U is proposing to hold most fees at current rates for the upcoming school year but a marginal increase

across certain fees will be added starting with the 2019-2020 school year.

According to Assistant Superintendent Gary Grizaffi, the committee, made up of administration, parents and personnel, discussed the need to assess school fees, the impact on families and the wide

range of services the district offers and compared fee schedules for surrounding school districts.

The committee took into account a variety of services the district offers including all-day kindergarten; security improvements to all buildings; wall-to-wall Wi-Fi; Chromebook distribution and usage protection to students; expansion of digital content to aid instruction; activity buses for after school activities; athletic trainers at all athletic events; concussion sports testing; arrival and dismissal supervisory personnel; and participation in clubs at elementary and middle school schools.

The primary changes being recommended are the addition of a

$10 fee for Tech Device Usage and Protection. The fee would cover the use and protection for student use of a Chromebook at home and at school. At middle and high school, the protection will cover the following events with no deductible: accidental damage, drops, liquid spills, theft, burglary and robbery, fire, flood, third party vandalism, natural disasters and power surge due to lightning. However it does not cover deliberate acts of vandalism or negligence by the user.

Fees are not recommended for an increase in the 2017-2018 school year, with the exception of the band instrument rental fee, which will increase $5 beginning in the school year 2017-18. Registration fees, at

all levels will increase by $5 beginning with the 2018-2019 school year, and an additional $5 for the 2019-2020 school year. In addition, a $5 increase will be seen in middle school co-curricular competitive and athletic participation fees; high school co-curricular non-athletic competitive club participation fees; and high school co-curricular athletic participation fees. These fees are used to defray the costs of coaches and sponsors, referees, supplies and transportation.

High school student parking fee would remain $120. An increase of $5 for the school year 2019-2020 is being proposed. Paid bus transportation would remain at $525 annually and the family maximum of $1,050 annually.

There will be a high school concert band and choir dress fee of $15 beginning 2017-2018.

Mayor Roger Claar up in close race Waiting for official numbers

In a race that was fraught with much controversy and brought Republicans and Democrats from near and far out knocking on doors, both sides are claiming neither victory or defeat until official results are in April 25.

Up by a slim margin, unofficial results show Bolingbrook Mayor Roger Claar will continue his 31year career leading the village. Only 102 votes separated Claar and challenger Jackie Traynere.

It was block by block, that support was won, contend both parties. In a message to its supporters, the Bolingbrook First party wrote: “Every contribution has made a difference. Although the final election results will not be available until April 25th, we wanted to express our sincere gratitude for the unfail-

ing support from members of the Bolingbrook community. Whether it was through door knocking, yard signs, Facebook posts, or conversations with neighbors, thank you for supporting Bolingbrook First.”

Echoing nearly the same sentiment, Bolingbrook United stated, “Ladies and gentlemen, we are blown away by the results and the support we have received. If there was ever a race (or a few in this case) where the expression “every vote matters” applies, it’s here in Bolingbrook.

Unfortunately, with the results as close as they are, we cannot declare victory or concede….Regardless of the final outcomes of any of the races as they are determined over the next couple of weeks, we are proud of our efforts and as we said before, we will continue to build.”

All incumbents, Carol Penning, Michael Lawler, Sheldon Watts and Maria Zarate ran on the same

Bolingbrook First Party ticket and all newcomers who joined forces with Traynere as the Bolingbrook United Party included Robert Jaskiewicz, Terri Ransom, Jamie Olson and Mary Helen Reyna de Parsons.

Unofficial results show incumbent Penning winning by only one vote ahead of Jamie Olson for village clerk. Two of the three incumbent trustees Lawler, with 5,773, and Zarate, with 5,717 will retain their seats and newcomer of the Bolingbrook United slate, Robert Jaskiewicz, with 5,625 votes, will take the third seat.

CHALLENGER JACKIE TRAYNERE

Incumbent Sheldon Watts received 5,473 votes while Terri Ransom received 5,615 votes; and Mary Helen Reyna de Parsons took in 5,337.

However, election results do not include provisional ballots that have yet to be counted. Election results will not be official until April 25.

Valley View School Board 365u

Ten candidates were vying for four seats on the Valley View School School District 365u school board.

Three of the four incumbents Deborah Sykora (5,666 votes), Elizabeth Campbell (4,553), and Victor Zack (4,180) will retain their seat. Newcomer Sally Guilbo (4,508) defeated Dan Falese who received 3,392 votes. The remaining candidates split the vote, Sinatra Strong, 2,394; Kokeith Perry; 1,246; Natale Garofalo,2,898; Vickie Sutterlin, 3,985 and Charlotte A. Droogan with 3,884.

White Oak Library District Referendum The third time wasn’t the charm for the White Oak Library District, with slightly more than 60 percent of the voters turning down the referendum that sought a minimal increase to extend library services in the three towns of Romeoville, Crest Hill and Lockport.

Declutter by Setting Limits Set a limit on how much you’re willing to store, and enjoy the peacefulness of owning less COME TO ORDER

By Sue Becker Hooray – the calendar and the weather are inching their way towards Spring! Have you gotten the itch to do some Spring cleaning? How many times in the past have you unsuccessfully tried to pare down the clutter in your home? Too many to count? Maybe a different approach can help. Read on to discover a different way of looking at things.

As you create your Spring cleaning plan, what if you turned your focus to how much space you’re willing to give to each category of item, rather than directly focusing on how much of each category you actually have? Recognizing that giving space to any one category takes away space that might otherwise be used to store something else, you can use containers, furniture, or areas of a room to limit the amount of space you’re willing to dedicate to any one category.

Let me give you an example. Let’s say books are a primary source of clutter in your home – they not only fill up

a multitude of shelves, but also spill out of boxes in your attic and are piled on surfaces throughout your home.

What if you declared that you’re only willing to have as many books as you have space on bookshelves? If you have more books than shelf space, you have several options: • Keep all the books because you don’t see any reason to get rid of any of them. Fair enough, you only need to consider doing something different if the pain of the clutter is greater than the pain of paring down.

• Buy more shelves.

• Pare down your book collection to fit on the shelves you currently have, and if you bring in more books, let go of enough so that they will all still fit on your shelves.

I’ve taken a similar approach to keepsakes – I have a bin on a closet

shelf that holds old greeting cards, my kids’ school work, etc. Several times the box has been filled to overflowing, but rather than give in to the temptation to buy more bins, I pared down the contents. Although you might suspect that this would have been a gutwrenching experience, it was actually quite enjoyable: It gave me a good reason to visit the treasures I otherwise would probably have never looked at and choose those that still hold meaning. Putting some time between my original saving of the items and revisiting them made it clear that what was once meaningful was no longer all that special for many things. If I ever get to a point that I can’t pare down enough to have it all fit in that bin, I’ll photograph items so I can save the memory while also saving space.

So whether it’s books, keepsakes, food storage containers, papers, clothes, kitchen utensils, or something else, set a limit on how much you’re willing to store, and enjoy the peacefulness of owning less.

GAME Bolingbrook’s Binns picks baseball over basketball, looks to help Raiders to a successful season

Anyone who watched Bolingbrook’s run a third-place finish in the IHSA Class 4A boys basketball finals is very familiar with Malik Binns.

The senior averaged 13.4 points and a team-best 7.1 points per game and was selected to the IBCA Class 3A/4A All-State special mention team.

With all those factors in play, it would not be a shock that Binns is set to play in college next season – it just may surprise them what he is playing.

Binns will attend Waubonsee Community College next season and play baseball.

“I thank God for giving me the chance to play with coach (Rob) Brost and Nana (Akenten) and all the players and it has been a great experience,” Binns said of

basketball. “I will never forget (that). I am really going to miss this, but the next chapter in my life is baseball.

“I have played both sports since I was four, but when I pitch I have a different edge to me.”

Binns has a fastball that ranges in the high 80s to low 90s on the radar gun, but even more that what he brings on the field, is what Binns brings to the club off the field.

“Malik has an infectious personality,” said Bolingbrook coach Scott Thyer. “He has a ton of energy and is an extremely positive person. To have that kind of energy around our players only benefits our team. The experience of going downstate and all they accomplished as a basketball program was a lot of fun to watch from my perspective and I think those experiences are only SEE GAME PAGE 12

GAME FROM PAGE 11 going to help us as a program as Malik can inject some of those experiences as the season goes along. I have really enjoyed having him around us this year and I am looking forward to the rest of the year.”

Binns’ love for baseball was born when he was a young athlete watching college and professional players.

“My brother, Maurice Binns, played baseball for Southern Illinois University and we used to always travel with him,” Malik said.

“And when I was homeschooled when I was younger, like 10 years old to 12, my parents took me to spring training three years in a row in Mesa, Az.”

THURSDAY, APRIL 13, 2017 | BUGLENEWSPAPERS.COM While baseball was an early love, Binns played travel basketball from an early age, beginning with a team coached by his father. He then worked his way up through the AAU ranks, and grew to 6-feet, 6-inches tall, eventually landing on the Mac Irvin Fire – one of the top programs in the country.

However, he knew heading into the state tournament this season that when the final buzzer sounded, it was the end of his basketball career.

“He is excellent in both sports,” Thyer said. “But, as a kid, you fall in love with a sport and his first love was baseball. It is refreshing to have a player not let outside influences impact his decision.

Whatever decision he made, he

was going to have my full support and coach Brost’s full support.”

While baseball may have always been the way he was leaning, Binns said the recruiting during basketball was a great experience for him.

“It was cool in a way and a lot of coaches were talking to me and I was getting double offers and it was cool in high school to balance baseball and basketball,” he said. “But me and my parents decided that I am not going to balance that in college.”

Binns is not the only thing going for the Raiders this season as the Bolingbrook will look to follow up a successful 2016 season.

Binns is still working to get his arm in pitching form and the

team is without University of Illinois-bound Jeremiah LeBron.

There are host of players filling LeBron’s shoes now to carry the offense, including Binns.

“It is really a team effort and next man up mentality,” Thyer said. “When guys get their opportunities, they need to take advantage of it and they have. It is great to have a guy like Jordan Jackson lead the way, he is really an incredibly hard worker and I know I will get a professional at bat every time in the box,” Thyer said. “Then Malik, who is really a strong kid and he can fight off tough pitches and find open spaces when it may be outs for other guys. Cameron Faulk, a junior third baseman for us is also having a great year so far, hitting

over .450 for us right now. Those guys have really set the table for a productive order even with Jeremiah out and when he comes back, our offense will only get off and running.”

On the mound, the Raiders graduated a lot of talent from last year’s squad, but the staff is getting the job done, with the help of Binns in a bullpen role currently.

“We lost a lot of arms from last year. We were pretty senior dominated,” Thyer said. “But, what that has led us to this year is allowing us to get some guys in there that hadn’t had opportunities. So far, senior right hander Josh Klatt has been good for us, as has Matt Dinkle, who is only SEE GAME PAGE 13

Not only did Bolingbrook lose senior pitchers from last season,

but seniors that went deep in games, meaning this season the bullpen is more critical.

“Our bullpen has been huge,” Thyer said. “Matt Milowski, Dylan Murello, Malik as well as junior Sebastian Trevino-Rameriez and

I think he will be a good one for us as well this year.”

Thyer said he is hoping that the Raiders can get healthy and get up to speed come playoff time.

“We will see our guys playing better as the season goes along,”

he said. “We are already playing better than earlier and if we continue the trend, I think these guys can do some special things together. Once playoff time comes around, I think we will be ready for that.”

Flyer softball splits DH he Lewis University softball team split its third consecutive Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader as the Flyers defeated Illinois Springfield, 6-3, in the opener, while dropping a 13-3 (5 inn.) decision to the Prairie Stars in the nightcap at the Lewis Softball Field on April 9.

With the split, Lewis is now 2217 overall and 10-8 in GLVC action, while the Prairie Stars move to 2121 on the campaign and 7-11 in conference play. Lewis sophomore pitcher Dara Sanders (Crestwood, Ill./Mother McAuley) went 3-for-

3 with a pair of RBI and tossed a complete-game, six-hitter while fanning six, as the Flyers claimed the 6-3 win in the opener.

Lewis sophomore first baseman Carley Maupin (Peotone, Ill./ Peotone) provided Sanders and the Flyers some insurance in the fifth inning with a three-run homer, extending their lead to 6-2.

Flyer sophomore designated player Alise Perna (Naperville, Ill./ Metea Valley) went 2-for-3 at the dish, while junior catcher Sarah DeMasi (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) was 2-for-2 with two runs and a

RBI. UIS scored in four out of five innings and connected for three home runs en route to the 13-3 (5 inn.) win over the Flyers in the nightcap.

Lewis starting pitcher Taylor Boelte took the loss for the Flyers in the circle. Boelte surrendered five runs - four earned - and five hits in two innings of work. She issued four walks and struck out one batter.

Romeoville teams Up with Senior Services of Will County The Senior Service Center of Will County will be opening an office at the Romeoville Village Hall to provide better access for residents and are expected to start operations May 1.

Senior Services of Will County is a not-for-profit agency that last

How seniors can preserve their brains Regular social activities help keep awareness Physical activity and proper diet and nutrition can help people age 50 and older maintain their physical health.

But there are also ways aging men and women can preserve brain health in an effort to prevent or delay the cognitive decline that affects millions of seniors across the globe.

It’s easy to overlook the importance of keeping the brain healthy. However, a decline in brain function can result in poor concentration, memory loss and a host of other issues. Sometimes, by the time symptoms present themselves, it may be too late to reverse any damage.

Research suggests that a combination of nutrition and mental, social and physical activities may have a greater impact with regard to maintaining and improving brain health than any single activity. Harvard Medical School also states that volunteering, caring for others and pursuing hobbies may benefit the brains of older adults.

A study published in the Archives of

General Psychiatry found participants who reported higher levels of purpose in life exhibited superior cognitive function despite the accumulation of abnormal protein depositions (amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles) in the brain, a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease. Having a purpose also may help those who do not have Alzheimer’s disease.

In addition to the suggestions mentioned above, those who want to boost brain health can consider these strategies.

• Start exercising the brain early on.

A study published in 2012 in the British Medical Journal examined cognitive function in people ages 45 to 70. Researchers found evidence of cognitive decline in the 45-yearold participants as well as the older participants. It’s never too early to put a brain health plan into motion.

• Read more books. Reading can open individuals up to new vocabulary and scenarios that promote a stronger brain and recall ability. Enrolling in an education course at a local college, community center or online also

may be beneficial.

• Hit the gym. Several studies suggest an association between physical activity and reduced risk of cognitive decline. This could be because exercise elevates heart rate, which pumps more blood to the brain and body.

• Supplement with DHA. DHA is an omega-3 fatty acid that is dominant in the brain. Adhere to a Mediterranean diet, which is generally high in natural sources of omega-3, including fish and monounsaturated fats from olives, olive oil, nuts and seeds. Supplements also may help, but individuals should consult with their doctors about which products to take.

• Challenge the mind. Men and women can engage in challenging activities that stray from their routines. Puzzles, strategic games, jigsaw puzzles, or difficult hobbies can benefit the brain.

• Keep a close-knit group of friends.

Regular conversation and social interaction is a key component of any brain health wellness plan.

• Slowing cognitive decline and promoting greater brain health should be a priority for adults of all ages.

Seniors should not adopt a pet if they anticipate frequent travel Companion animals bring great joy to their owners. The unconditional love cats and dogs provide appeals to people of all ages. While many people associate pets with kids who can’t wait to welcome the first cat or dog into their homes, pets can benefit aging men and women as well.

It’s not uncommon for seniors to feel lonely or depressed when they retire, their children move away or they lose a spouse or close friend or friends. The American Humane Society states that studies show pets help seniors overcome loneliness and depression by providing affection, company and entertainment. Pets also provide much-needed mental stimulation, and many pet owners find their pets help them become more physically active as well.

Seniors who adopt pets may also feel a sense of purpose when helping animals who may not have

anywhere to live. This is particularly true of older companion animals, which many young families are understandably hesitant to adopt.

Mature pets might be an ideal fit for seniors.

When seniors are looking to adopt a pet, there are various reasons why older pets or particular animals might be the perfect fit for them.

Adult pets may already be house trained, saving seniors the trouble and effort of training them.

Seniors may find cats fit their lifestyles more than dogs, as cats are less active and do not need to be walked or played with as much as dogs. Cats also are small and easily maneuverable, meaning even seniors who have arthritis or other physical limitations can easily care for cats. Many cats are also content to spend long periods of time sleeping on their owners’ laps.

Small dogs that can be active within the house might be a good idea as well, especially for seniors with mobility issues.

They’re also easily transported to and from vet appointments.

It’s important that seniors carefully weigh the benefits of adopting a pet against any limitations they may have.

Having a backup plan for care is advantageous as well.

Seniors should not adopt a pet if they anticipate frequent travel or medical care that requires they be away from home for long periods of time.
