District speeds plan to increase technology

Motivated by gains in student performance, Valley View School District 365u is looking to expand its technology program to the entire district by next year.

Educational Services Rachel Kinder said the move is about staying true to the district’s mission to have students college and career ready, giving them access to the tools they need to succeed.

The district began its Limitless Learning one-to-one technology initiative, meaning each student would have access to a Chrome-

book, last year, starting at the seventh and eighth grade level as well as an integration of a more mobile environment in the elementary levels, where Chromebooks could be stored in carts in the classroom.

The district’s original plan was to increase technology to include the middle and high school grade levels over a three-year period. However,

the success of the initiative, has the district opting to not only complete the program next year but to expand it to include fourth and fifth grade levels and post high school levels, STEP program.

Executive Director of Technology Astrid Welch told the Valley View school board that the move forward to expand the scope of the project

is due to a number of reasons but that the biggest force driving the endeavor is the digital curriculum available to instructors. The district has been able to use e-rate funds for the massive wall-to wall wireless infrastructure to ensure connectivity for all of its resources and the devices themselves are very affordable. Welch explains that using Chromebooks gives the district an opportunity to take advantage of free resources, the many google apps of the G-suite that are available, and a battery life of the device matches the school day.

Welch also noted that “it is not just about putting a device in the hands of students, it’s also making sure our educators have the support they need whether its technology coaches, building personnel, or operational technology support.”

Executive Director for Education Services 6-12 Karen Flories also explained that to make the program work it is critical to make sure devices are having an in moving the needle for growth and development for success. The district has seen significant gains across the board in its use of the program Achieve 3000, ratcheting Lexile (reading) levels up tremendously, and exceeding expectations.

According to the district, student outcomes continue to grow at the middle school level. Educators are leading professional development for their fellow educators on how to utilize technology to support and enhance instruction in the classroom. In addition, administration said there is a greater immediacy of feedback for teachers and students through the use of various platforms like Achieve 3000 and MATHiaX. In addition, students are taking more ownership of their learning and often times have differentiated learning paths to choose from. Many educators are more efficient with their SEE DISTRICT PAGE 12

The moment of the fool What if the public could permanently tear open the secret state and demand accountability and openness

Could there be a bigger contrast - in attitude, style, comportment, philosophy? What irony that the two names are now linked in history: Donald Trump forever the successor to Barack Obama, forever the orange-haired blot on his legacy, forever the surrealistic next chapter of the American narrative.

At the superficial level of news and understanding, this is never going to compute. And the way the Trump presidency has begun - white nationalism cozying up with the generals and Wall Street - seems to raise the worst fears possible.

Before this contrast disappears completely into the global chaos the Trump presidency seems bent on creating (that is to say, the new normal), I have a small, cautious observation to make: Maybe Trump is just what we need.

I say this in spite of what he stands for and who he is - in spite of his lies, his racism, his lack of impulse control, his nutball tweets - not because of them.

He’s a dangerous egotist occupying the most powerful position on the planet.

His value lies pretty much completely in the fact that his incompetence is so obvious that, in spite of himself, he winds up exposing problems much deeper than the ones he manifests. And the opposition that swirls around him can only become increasingly aware of the need not simply to stand up to Trump but to rebuild much of America’s political infrastructure.

“In the splurge of ‘news,’ media-bashing, and Bannonism that’s been Donald Trump’s domestic version of a shockand-awe campaign, it’s easy to forget just how much of what the new president and his administration have done so far is simply an intensification of trends long underway,” William Hartung wrote recently. “Those who already pine for the age of Obama - a president who was smart, well read, and not a global embarrassment - need to acknowledge the ways in which, particularly in the military arena, Obama’s years helped set the stage for our current predicament.”

And of course this goes much deeper than Obama. The country’s current state of endless war goes back to the end of

War as a policy, especially perpetual war, isn’t simply one individual’s reasoned decision, but a state of existence flowing from the consensus of governing institutions.

When that consensus exists in the dark, free of public input or scrutiny, the motivating factors of that consensus are likely to be something other than the euphemism known as “the public good.”

For instance: “Given that the Soviet Union no longer exists, that China has become a capitalist economy and that the major difficulties faced abroad are ISIS . . . and related groups, it is deeply questionable why the congressional budget still devotes tens of billions of dollars to Cold War-era nuclear weapons,” Jonathan King and Richard Krushnic write at Truthout. “. . . Where does the pressure for these wasteful and provocative programs - which almost certainly decrease national security - come from?” they ask.

“While military high command and the intelligence agencies also press for nuclear weapons upgrades, corporate profits derived from nuclear weapons contracts may be the most powerful driving force, supported by members of Congress with military research and development . . . and production facilities in their districts.”

This begins to get at it. The ongoing development of nuclear weapons is insane by any measure, but if the ultimate driving influence is economic - cash dividends spread across the Washington consensus - it’s unclear what, if any, political or social force exists that can effectively challenge this, i.e., can undo the entrenched justifications of business as usual even if that business is leading the whole planet toward Armageddon.

Obama couldn’t do it, even though he declared, back in 2009, in his first foreign policy speech: “Just as we stood for freedom in the 20th century, we must stand together for the right of people everywhere to live free from fear in the 21st century. And . . . as the only nuclear

power to have used a nuclear weapon, the United States has a moral responsibility to act. We cannot succeed in this endeavor alone, but we can lead it, we can start it.

“So today, I state clearly and with conviction America’s commitment to seek the peace and security of a world without nuclear weapons.”

What happened instead, as Hartung notes, is that Obama “oversaw the launching of a trillion dollar ‘modernization’ of the U.S. nuclear arsenal (including the development of new weapons and new delivery systems). And one thing is already clear enough: President Trump will prove no non-interventionist. He is going to build on Obama’s militarization of foreign policy and most likely dramatically accelerate it.”

Indeed, “Given the way President Trump has outfitted his administration with generals, the already militarized nature of foreign policy is only likely to become more so,” Hartung goes on, adding that many of his appointees have backgrounds not only in the military but the weapons industry as well.

Back to the contrast between Obama and Trump. Obama, as he coolly articulated the politics of hope, managed to disarm not U.S. foreign policy but the antiwar public. Trump is doing the opposite - and doing it so garishly, so clumsily, that public outrage coalesces around his every executive order. And a permanent movement is very much in formation right now, composed of people who see the government acting with utter oblivion to their will and interests.

They feel unrepresented.

As I pondered this, an image flickered for a moment: I saw a deck of Tarot cards, and there was Donald Trump as The Fool: the card of impulse, audacity and the pursuit of foolish adventure.

This is the card that prophecies, in short, CHANGE. Could it be? What if the public could permanently tear open the secret state and demand accountability and openness in the conduct of its business? What if we decided to stay on permanent alert and refused to let the lesser human qualities - greed, paranoia, hatred, dominance - determine the planet’s future?

What if Trump has set something into motion that can’t be stopped? You might even call it a revolution.

Bolingbrook wins its second Class 4A third-place trophy in 3 years

While a 70-66 win over Fremd in the Class 4A third-place game, the Bolingbrook Raiders completed their second third-place season in the last three seasons, while notching a school record 30 wins.

And, while a 60-50 loss in the state semi-final to eventual runner-up Simeon, the Raiders were not going to go out with a loss.

“Coming into the state tournament, coach emphasized that there are only two teams that win their last game,” senior Nana Akenten said. “While we wanted to be in that state final game, but we fell short of that goal, but we all had the same mindset – we were not going to lose our last game.”

While Bolingbrook led for 22 minutes, 45 seconds of the game, Fremd made the game interesting at the end, but the Raiders pulled it out behind a balanced

effort.

Malik Binns led the way with 18 points, while Akenten added 16, Joseph Yesufu 12, Tyler Cochran 11 and Kaleb Thornton 10.

“I am so proud of these boys, not because of the players they are, but because of the type of human beings they are,” Bolingbrook coach Rob Brost said. “They truly care about each other and they genuinely care about the coaching staff and that is hard to find from 16, 17 and 18-year old young men. Especially given how basketball is – it is a selfish game and our kids played unselfish all year and you saw that (in the third place game) against a team that has 30 wins.”

Stars shine bring in shootout

About midway through the second half of the Voyager Media Boys Basketball All-Star Shootout Bolingbrook’s Nana Akenten came

to the scorers table and asked what the record for points was.

Well, fresh off helping to lead the Raiders to third place in the Class 3A State Tournament the day before, Anenten scored 22 points to help make sure the team scoring record was shattered.

His North group, however, fell short in a up-and-down fun-filled final game for the all senior all-star teams on Sunday, March 19 at the University of St. Francis in Joliet.

Joliet West’s Trevian Bell scored a team-high 22 points and wowed the crowd with a series of slams as the South squad pulled away in the final few minutes for a 134-122 victory. Bell’s Joliet West teammate — Tabyous Casterberry tied him for team-high honors with 22 points, as the 256 points easily broke the combined points record, which was set last year in a 120-119 win

by Team Gregory - when the format was a little different.

Niles West’s Aaron Flowers scored a game-high 27 points for the North team, which tied Bolingbrook graduate (‘13) and current SMU Mustang Ben Moore for the the second most points ever scored in the nine years of the boys all-star game.

A feel-good award was presented before the game.

The Jeremy Izzo Character Award, which is named after the former Joliet Catholic Academy boys basketball coach, who passed away in 2010. This years award was presented to Lockport’s Matt Smietanski.

“I had no idea,” Smietanski said of receiving the award. “Coach [Brett] Hespell told me I was nominated and knowing [Izzo’s] story, I was just excited for that. I tried to do my best to turn things around at Lockport and give an example of what to be.”

Bolingbrook’s Cameron Harris (16 points) joined Akenten in the game for the North squad.

They were fresh off being part of the Raider team which defeated Fremd 70-66 the day before to finish the season with a schoolbest 30-2 record and capture third place in Class 4A for the second time in three years.

“We love basketball, so when you get called to do something like this in front of the people and in with guys from other teams, it is something fun to do,” Akenten said. “We just wanted to get some highlights.”

In the girls game, led by 10 points from MVP Brooklyn Bachmann and a team-high 13 points from Jaianna Brooks, the South squad pulled away for a 64-43 victory.

Katie Jaseckas, who helped lead Benet Academy to back-to-back Class 4A state championships in 2015 and 16, led the North team and all scorers with 14 points. But the balance of the South team, which was made up of mostly members of the Southwest Prairie Conference and had 12 of 13 players score, won out.

No matter the outcome, it was a final opportunity to put on their high school uniforms for the players.

“It was definitely special,” said Bachmann, who helped guide Minooka to a 24-4 record this past season. “Especially after ending the season on a bad note [losing 56-49 to Bolingbrook in the regional final].

“I loved playing with them [allstar teammates] after playing [against] them for four years.” .Bachmann had a variety of assists in the shootout game, to help SEE STARS PAGE 11

STARS FROM PAGE 10 net her the MVP. “I wasn’t thinking about it, but after everything it was nice to get,” she said of the MVP. “It was just nice to come out and play, a nice way to end [high school].”

But it’s not the end for Bachmann as far as basketball goes.

She was also the setter on the Indians state-runnerup volleyball team and was heavily recruited in both basketball and volleyball. But she decided to continue with basketball in college and will attend Bemidji State University in Minnesota.

“I decided on basketball,” Bachmann said. “In volleyball I ended my career finishing second in the state. But in basketball, especially after the way this season ended, I felt like I still had something to prove.”

With the South team clinging to a 23-22 lead in the opening moments of the second half, Plainfield East’s Maddie Sidman nailed a 3-pointer to trigger a 9-0 run. During the spurt, Bachmann drove to the hoop and was fouled on consecutive possessions. She

Ahead 32-24, Brooks - who is from Plainfield South, connected on a pair of 3-pointers in a 12-2 burst that extended the lead to 4426. That pretty much wrapped it up as both teams substituted every four minutes.

Plainfield East, which had the most successful season in school history - finishing 25-8 and advancing to the title game of the East Aurora Sectional, had four players represent at the all-star game.

“I think the chemistry helped,” Sidman said. “We were all in the same conference and that really helped. It was fun playing against them for four years and then playing together.”

Sidman scored five points and her teammate, Ashley Smoldt who scored six points, agreed.

“I has three teammates out there and knew the other players too,” Smoldt said. “Once we got to talk to each other on the bench, we knew what to expect. We just had to play some more defense [to win] and it was fun.”

Kennedy Collins (7 points) and

Lotanna Onua (2 points) also played for Plainfield East.

Mariah Collins (8 points), Tierrah Farris (5 points), and Madison McGath (1 point) represented Plainfield North. Erin Graefen (1 point) was there from Plainfield Central while Tylenea Hood (2 points) and Gabrielle Robertson represented Joliet Central. The only player on the South squad not from the SPC was Lockport’s Elena Woulfe (4 points).

Woulfe, however, had a key steal that she converted into a layup that triggered the South team to a 9-2 spurt to end the half. Collins capped the burst and the first half by draining a 3-pointer right before the buzzer to give South the lead for good at 23-20.

Jaseckas scored six points as the North team oped the game by jumping out to an 8-2 lead.

“It was really fun out here to meet other girls from other teams and it was one more time with the [Benet] seniors. It was nice to put on the jersey one more time.”

She was one of four Benet players that participated in the shootout. The others were Ali Kramer, Emma Lyne (2 points),

and Kendal Schramek (6 points), who helped lead the Redwings (285) to a third straight sectional title.

“I watched this all-star game a couple of years ago when my older sister was in it,” Schramek said of her sister - Emily Schramek, who is now a sophomore at Northern Michigan University. “So it was great to play in it.

“Obviously the way we ended [a 59-38 loss to eventual Class 4A runner-up Edwardsville in the Wesleyan University Supersectional] was disappointing. So it was great to play with my teammates and the other girls again.”

TyAnn Legrand-Melton, helped Lisle to a Class 2A regional title this season and she scored seven points for the North team. Being a smaller school, she may not have seen some of the other teams and players that were represented, but she was familiar with them.”

“I played against some of them

on my travel team,” she said. “This was fun. It was a good experience and was fun just to watch how competitive everyone was.”

Nicole Cyranoski, who is also from Lisle, got to play. Talia Edwards, from Bolingbrook, chipped in with six points for the North team.

“This was pretty fun,” Edwards said. “I got to play with a lot of Plainfield people and we lost to Plainfield East (69-60) in the sectional [semifinals]. So we got to see how relaxed they are on the court and be able to play with them in a game.”

Rounding out the North team was Maine East’s Lauryn AlbaGarner; Downers Grove North’s Hannah Ilyavi and Brigid Miller; Downers Grove South’s Kasandra Rugienius and Addyson Wesolowski; Romeoville’s Lexi Marin (2 points) and Aynna Shelby (4 points); and Resurrection’s Ivy Witczak (2 points).

The results of the middle school data show significant growth in three of the four key domains for 7th and 8th grade levels who received a one to one device, while at 6th grade, solid growth has occurred but it has been less dramatic.

“I do want to make this very clear-- you do not get these results my simply putting a device into the hands of a child. It takes development and a plan component, so we have to really help develop and support our teachers in how this will enhance their curriculum,” said Flories.

Students have access to programs like Reflex Math and Dreambox, programs that students can continue to use over the summer, opening their access to information at their level.

“These have a tremendous impact on student learning and student growth,” said Hurder. “Achieve 3000 is one of those programs and we’ve seen a dramatic increase in with our devices that has paid off significantly for our learners.”

Welch said the district originally planned to add three grade level but recognized the curriculum at the high school level often combines juniors and seniors in some classes.

“Providing devices to half the

student body in that second year would probably not be the best delivery,” said Welch. “We also had a very successful roll out in seventh and eighth grade this year, with operational concerns a non-issue so we would like to expand that to all four grade levels at the high school and post twelve; fill in the gap at the sixth grade level and expand the one-to-one to fourth and fifth grade levels.”

Currently Chromebooks are kept at school, however, plans also include for students to be able to take the devices home next year to build on student access. Administration plans to provide further information to students and parents about the process and will account for having allocations in place for charging Chromebooks if need be, etc.

The decision to expand the One to One rollout to include fourth and fifth grade students is driven by the needs of the curriculum and successes shown at the middle school level. It is not anticipated that students will take the devices home. In addition, the teaching and learning Coaches will be in place this year at the Elementary level to provide support as needed for the integration of these devices into curriculum delivery.

No real rewards with credit cards DEAR DAVE, We’re trying to get control of our finances, and my husband wants to close all our credit cards. I want to keep one and use the bill-pay option for monthly stuff like utilities, so we can keep earning rewards points. I look at my way as a method of just re-routing the money and paying it off each month. Am I wrong in looking at it like this?

CHERYL DEAR CHERYL, Yes, you are. Life never goes as planned. You can have all the wellreasoned and best-intentioned ideas you want, but sooner or later something will go wrong.

Why not use a debit card that has a rewards system attached? Lots of debit card programs offer the same

kinds of rewards programs that credit card companies do, with one big exception — you don’t have to go into debt! Studies have shown that the vast majority of people never redeem their credit card airline miles. Other studies show that people spend more when using credit cards as opposed to cash.

—DAVE DEAR DAVE, We were very late on one of our credit card bills, and now it has been turned over to a collection agency. The collection company has offered us three or four different payment options. Does the original creditor accept the agreement, too, if we accept one of the collection agency’s options?

DEAR ANONYMOUS, In most situations of this type, the collection agency owns the debt outright or they’re directly representing the original creditor.

It’s pretty much standard operating procedure when someone has defaulted on a loan.

My advice would be to accept the

deal they’ve offered that makes the most sense for you and your current financial situation. It’ll ding your credit report, and show a settlement on the defaulted credit card, but that’s not the end of the world. There’s already a mark against you for it being turned over to collections. If you want to keep things like this from happening in the future, you need to get control of your finances.
