Community basketball tournament helps area teens join winning team By laura katauskas Bugle Staff

For 50 area teens it was a chance to be part of a team; a chance to belong when family finances and timing may not have allowed the opportunity. Heart Haven OutReach, commonly known as H2O, recently held its sixth annual Character Counts 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament at Brooks Middle School in Bolingbrook.

Heart Haven Outreach and DuPage Township teamed up with the Bolingbrook-Romeoville Character Counts Coalition to create a monthlong basketball program that gives all teenagers in Bolingbrook and Romeoville the opportunity to participate in an organized sport.

In addition, the goal is to help build relationships between teenagers and mentors that can contribute to positive life transformations.

“Teens come to participate for the love of basketball and sports, but sign up year after year because of meaningful relationships they build with their coaches and teammates,” said Ryan Lawrence, executive director of H2O. Many of the students who participated in the tournament attend Valley View School District

Lawrence said a school district of that size lacks space on its high school teams to include everyone interested in joining, while park district or traveling teams often times lack the necessary resources.

These factors can make earning a spot on a team rather difficult and that’s is why H2O started the event.

Six years ago, a committee of adults from around the community put together an affordable month-long program of organized basketball, for $5 per teen. This year’s Character Counts 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament consisted of nine teams made up of 50 students and 11 coaches. The teams spent a total of 62 hours practicing in preparation for the tournament.

At the trustee’s meeting, student trustee Saleh Ruman said that after being presented with the facts, JJC students, including student government, were in favor of the tuition increase.

“I want to confirm students’ support of the increase,” he said. ”We did a survey of 100 students, and a majority of them supported it.”

Community groups in Bolingbrook, Romeoville host St. Baldrick’s events

Every three minutes a child is diagnosed with cancer.

Each year community members join the fight against cancer, raising funds by shaving their heads to symbolically connect with those who are battling cancer and to raise funds for cancer research.

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a volunteer-driven charity that funds more in childhood cancer research grants than any organization except the U.S. government.

Participants find that shaving their head in solidarity with the approximately 160,000 children who are diagnosed with cancer each year and frequently lose their hair as a result of treatment, is a small sacrifice in comparison to what these children endure.

Community groups in Bolingbrook and Romeoville have been planning and hosting events to support the effort.

In Bolingbrook, more than 240

individuals and 20 groups raised nearly $100,000 during the annual Bolingbrook 4 Kids fundraiser, held March 6 held at the Bolingbrook Golf Club. Those wishing to donate can still do so by visiting www.stbaldricks.org/events/ mypage/719/2016.

The event was all about remembering and supporting children and families.

Each year, the inspiration for the event, is them, the children who fight the battle every day like 17-year-old Nathan, 9-yearold Maxwell, 10-year-old Daniel, 17-year-old Alejandro, 8-year-old Addison, 14-year-old Connor, 11-year-old Rosie and 7-year-old Max, as well as angels Faith, John and Macy.

From a variety of raffles and photo ops with Star Wars characters to standing strong and going bald, men and women, and boys and girls came together to join the cause.

Bolingbrook’s Team Liberty was the top fundraiser, bringing in nearly $20,000.

RHS students and staff members kicked off their fundraising efforts in February and nearly 50 people will shave their heads in a private event with close to 2,000 people in attendance to help conquer cancer.

RHS held its first St. Baldrick’s event in 2010, with its 40 member “We Baldin Team”, raising more than $8,600. Over a four year period, the RHS “We Baldin Team” raised more than $86,000 and is on its way to a $10,000 goal this year.

St. Baldrick’s is the world’s largest volunteer-driven fundraiser for childhood cancer research.

2016-17 Valley View kindergarten enrollment underway Open Enrollment for Valley View School District 365U children who will be in kindergarten for the 2016-17 school year, will be held March 17 through March 24. This period will include one late evening in Romeoville and a Saturday enrollment session in Bolingbrook.

Students who will be five years old on or before Sept. 1, 2016 are eligible for kindergarten. The Enrollment Office in the VVSD Administration Center will have extra workers on hand from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on March 17 and 18 as well as March 21-24. The office will remain open until 6 p.m. on March 23. The Administration Center is located at 755 Dalhart Ave., Romeoville.

In addition, registrars will be located at the Fountaindale Library, 300 W. Briarcliff, Bolingbrook from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 19.

Students must be enrolled by either a parent or guardian.

Students cannot be enrolled unless all documents are presented.

Enrollment forms are available at the District Administration Center, 755 Dalhart Ave., Romeoville, or by going to the enrollment website www.vvsd.org/depar tments/

In order to enroll, the following documents will need to be provided: 1. One of the following showing proof of age: • Certified birth certificate with a raised seal (no photo copies, hospital birth certificates or baptismal certificates will be accepted) • If foreign born, the child’s passport or legal birth certificate from country in which student was born 2. One of the following for proof of residency: • Current Real Estate Tax Bill (2014 will be accepted until the 2015 bill is available) • Mortgage statement dated within 30 days of enrollment • Current-year lease signed by landlord with landlord phone number 3. One of the following for additional proof of residency: • A utility bill in the parent’s name dated within 30 days of enrollment • Business mail in parent’s name dated within 30 days of enrollment • A photo ID for the parent or legal guardian enrollment. Foster parents must bring in the Placement Form to enroll their student. Anyone living with another family will need to bring the homeowner with them with the required proofs of residency plus one proof of residency for the parent. Legal guardians, children living in another person’s home or anyone with residency questions should contact the Enrollment Department to discuss special circumstances before registering.

If a language other than English is spoken at home or by the child, a

state-required English proficiency test will be administered in June, July or August. During enrollment, an appointment will be made for this required assessment.

If it is inconvenient to come in during the open enrollment periods, parents may come in to the Administration Center any time during normal business hours, Monday through Friday, 7:30 to 4 p.m. (closed on legal holidays).

The 85-year-old Mueller, who now lives in Glen Ellyn, captivated students with the story of his journey from a happy 8-year-old living in Germany to a teenager in concentration camps.

Near the end of his ordeal “I was so weak I could hardly stand up” and he was so hungry he gnawed on a piece of wood even as hundreds of lice filled his body.

Mueller’s sad tale began in 1938 when, as an 8-year-old Jewish youngster living in Germany with his parents and sister in a nice house, his father and uncle were taken to a concentration camp. A year later his mother sent Mueller and his sister to Holland to escape

from the Nazi atrocities.

A guardian took charge of them in Holland where they stayed in a convent with nuns who were part of the “underground resistance.”

But a year later the Germans overran Holland and they made all Jewish people wear a yellow star.

In 1943, after going into hiding for a while, Mueller and his sister were sent to Vught Concentration Camp in Holland.

“It was like walking from day into night,” he said. “The food was terrible. It was dirty. It was crowded.

There were a lot of beatings.”

We’re free!’” And with that, Russian soldiers freed Holocaust survivor George Levy Mueller and his sister from a six year journey that took them from their home in Germany to three different concentration camps.

Mueller related his fascinating story to Humphrey Middle School eighth graders last week, telling the students about vicious guards, constant beatings, sleeping conditions that included wooden blank beds and straw mattresses, poor food, terrible sickness and unbearable cold.

“We were always hungry and very dirty,” he said. “But the worst thing was standing and watching people boarding transports to death camps. It was horrible to see people saying goodbye to each other.”

“We are grateful for the support of our students and our board of trustees in this investment in our students’ future,” JJC President Debra Daniels said. “Funding the rising costs of higher education is a shared burden, and we will remain dedicated, as always, to not only being diligent stewards of taxpayer funds, but providing students with financial aid and scholarship support.

“Over the last few years, JJC has made significant expense reductions through cost-saving

initiatives, vacant position reallocation, and expense reduction in the Early Childhood Center, Fitness Center and Renaissance Center programs.”

Additionally, between fiscal years 2010 and 2015, the college reduced operating costs by more than $2 million, with ongoing savings of $1.3 million per year.

Last year, JJC students were awarded $848,000 in scholarships from the JJC Foundation, and in fiscal year 2014-2015, the financial aid office disbursed nearly $22 million in grants and loans to students.

If you are beyond sick and tired of hearing about the fiscal problems in Illinois, I understand completely. There seems to be no end in sight to a crisis many years in the making, and one that threatens to take us through an entire fiscal year without an approved budget.

My purpose here is not to change your politics, but to share some of my knowledge and experience as it relates to funding social services in our state. worth every penny We pay our social service workers shockingly low wages in Illinois.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, social and human service assistants in Illinois make just $28,770 annually, versus a national average of $29,270. Substance abuse counselors don’t fair much better, pulling in just $34,000 per year – well below the national average of $39,000.

My own work history has taken me to hospitals, residential treatment facilities and jails. For most of this time, even with years of experience and an advanced degree, I made no more than $12-$14 per hour.

This despite being bitten twice, punched square in the chest once, having a chair thrown at me, taking profanity in every conceivable combination of words you can imagine, and often dedicating 60 or more hours in a week to a struggling agency or program. And my experiences are not unusual.

Inevitably, a question arises about how to afford increased budgets for social service agencies in the face of an already massive state deficit. Won’t spending more on services take away from other important government functions, including infrastructure and education? At the risk of oversimplifying the issue, the answer is no, it won’t.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, every dollar invested in addiction treatment services yields a return of $4 to $7 by reducing drug-related crimes, and lowering criminal justice and healthcare costs.

In addition, benefits are seen from fewer interpersonal conflicts, greater workplace productivity and fewer drugrelated accidents, including overdoses and deaths. Other types of services see

The Illinois Department of Human Services eats up a large share of taxpayer money, and some of the money they receive could be better spent.

In my time in this industry, I’ve seen new leaders come in and propose various ways of supporting social services, but often they seemed to ignore one critical fact: there is already a long-standing network of functional, affordable agencies throughout the state. But pet projects or far-flung grant ideas have undermined efforts of many agencies by awarding dollars to fly-bynight groups that formed simply to appeal to the people in charge at the time. In the end, these groups closed up or left the state, while the committed organizations have suffered.

It has become a well-established rite of spring that agencies across the state must band together, protest in Springfield, write letters to representatives and flood their local papers with letters explaining why they should be supported. Despite operating with mere skeleton crew staffs that work with highly challenging populations, these programs are forced to justify their existence every year.

Questions get raised: Do we really need to pay for people with heroin addiction? Can’t families just support their sick family members? Why does someone with schizophrenia need a permanent case manager?

The work done by social service providers encompasses a huge range of important functions, including caring for the most vulnerable populations.

These professionals serve in nursing homes, mental health hospitals, substance abuse treatment centers, domestic violence agencies, homeless shelters and many other areas.

Ultimately, we need a combination of approaches that involves faith groups, private contributions and government support. And it is crucial that people see their money being used effectively and not wasted. Illinois has a network of strong providers that it needs to make the most of, as part of a stable long-term budget solution.

Because these agencies adhere to strict state regulations for operation, they also survive on the money allotted to them in each year’s state budget. When the agencies are given an opportunity, they provide invaluable services that benefit the state fiscally and socially. titanic part II? At this point, it’s a fair question to ask whether Illinois’ fiscal situation is beyond repair. Although unthinkable to many, the possibility of a state going through bankruptcy should not be ignored. Dramatic budgetary crises have played out recently in Greece, Puerto Rico and Detroit, and it’s not as if the fiscal problems in Illinois are new.

Politicians in Springfield have been well aware of an impending financial crisis for many years, which is perhaps now unfixable, or soon could be.

I am reminded of a friend who held a job where he began falling behind in his work. After a while, he realized that he could not catch up, but rather than telling his boss or limiting the number of new projects he took on, he actually began accepting more work.

He did so realizing that he would never complete any of it, but he figured that he would hold on as long as possible.

This strategy worked for a number of weeks as everyone thought that he must be doing a great job because he was taking on so much work. Before long, however, the ruse was uncovered and he was let go.

Is Illinois in a similar state of affairs, with our leaders pulling a ruse on us?

Are we hearing warnings about an approaching iceberg when the party leaders are aware that we already hit the iceberg a long time ago? Is our fate sealed?

If that is in fact the case, then it will result in a terrible tragedy for many across Illinois, and especially for those in the social services.

Sunday 8th annual Voyager Media Shootout is this Sunday at USF

The eighth annual Voyager Media Prep Shootout is back again at the University of St. Francis in Joliet.

Tip time for the girls game is at 5:30 p.m., while the boys play at 7 p.m.

The cost of the event is $5 for adults and $2 for students.

Past stars in the game include the Philadelphia 76ers’ Richaun Holmes (Lockport), Derrick Marks from Boise State (Plainfield Central) and Ben Moore of SMU (Bolingbrook), Keiera Ray (Penn) Aaron Jordan of the University of Illinois (Plainfield East) and Brian Bennett of Cal Poly (Plainfield East), among others Last year was the first year of the fantasy draft featuring Mark Gregory against Scott Taylor, with Scott’s team winning both

games. That has put Mark in revenge mode this year.

In the girls game, Team Mark is led by Alcorn State-bound Monica Barefield of Joliet Central and Hennessey Handy of Plainfield Central.

He has a pair of state champions in Elise Stout and Sami Valentine of Benet and several regional champions in Brittney Patrick of Bolingbrok and Adriana Acosta and Mia Farrell of Joliet Catholic.

The rest of his lineup consists of Julia Sirvinskas (Maine South), Annie Carlson and Amanda Prete (Westmont), Taylor Cogdell (Plainfield East), Kelly McLean (Downers South) and Kierra Tyler ( Joliet West).

Children’s Advocacy Center adds 4 new members to board of directors Will County State’s Attorney Jim Glasgow established center 20 years ago Four new members were appointed to the Will County Children’s Advocacy Center’s Board of Directors.

The new directors are Ragan Freitag, Michael Fricilone, Carole Cheney and Brooke Simpson.

Freitag and Fricilone are members of the Will County Board, Cheney is a staff member for a local congressman, and Simpson is a prominent local insurance and financial services agent.

Will County State’s Attorney Jim Glasgow, who chairs the

board of directors, announced the appointments last week.

Glasgow established the Children’s Advocacy Center 20 years ago as a not-for-profit agency to improve investigations into cases involving child sexual abuse.

“Our new board members bring to the table a tremendous passion for protecting vulnerable children,” Glasgow said in a statement. “I am honored to have Ragan Freitag and Mike Fricilone, two of the most dedicated public servants in Will County, putting their experience

to work for this vital agency. Carole Cheney and Brooke Simpson are also two talented professionals who will strengthen important links with our local congressman and the business community.”

Freitag, a Wilmington resident, is a local attorney who was elected to the Will County Board in 2012 to represent the residents of District 6.

She also has served as an alderman for the city of Wilmington and as the vice president of the Joliet Catholic Academy Alumni Association.

“Our children are our future,” Freitag said of her interest in working with the Children’s Advocacy Center.

“It’s our responsibility to keep them safe,

to educate them, and to make the world a better place for them.”

Fricilone, of Homer Glen, also was elected to the Will County Board in 2012 to represent the residents of District 7. He is a 25year resident of Will County and the executive vice president of Midwest Office Interiors in Woodridge. He also serves as the president of the Lockport Township High School Foundation.

Fricilone said his grandchildren inspired his interest in the Children’s Advocacy Center.

“I have five grandchildren,” he said. “Their protection and education is what is most important to me. It should be that way for all

children in our community.”

Cheney, an Aurora resident, is also an attorney, a former news reporter and a media relations specialist.

“These youngsters are among the most vulnerable in our society,” she said. “I would like to play a role in the vital work of helping to empower and comfort them.”

Simpson, a resident of Plainfield, currently works at Mary Wlodarski Insurance Agency in Naperville.

She is active in GFWC-IL Plainfield Junior Woman’s Club and currently serves on the PJWC Board as Club Advisor. The club has worked closely with the Children’s Advocacy Center over the years.
