American Water warns of utility imposters Customers can always call Illinois American Water’s customer service center at 800-422-2782 to confirm if a service visit is legitimate Illinois American Water is warning customers about possible utility imposters in the area. Individuals claiming to represent the water company claimed to need access to the home of a Bolingbrook resident. According to media reports, the two unknown subjects robbed the residents of some jewelry.

Residents can prevent utility imposters from targeting them by taking precautions. According to Illinois American Water Vice President of Operations Mike Smyth, “if someone comes to your door claiming to be from the local utility and you are not expecting them, do not let them inside without proper photo identification. And if you

have a sense something isn’t right, do not hesitate in calling 9-1-1.”

Smyth added, customers can always call Illinois American Water’s customer service center at 800422-2782 to confirm if a service visit is legitimate.

According to Utilities United Against Scams (UUAS), scammers can be very convincing and often target those who are most vulnerable, including senior citizens and low-income communities. They also aim their scams at small business owners during busy customer service hours. However, with the right information, customers can learn to detect and report these predatory scams.

Illinois American Water reminds customers that its service personnel drive company-branded vehicles, and wear photo identification badges with the company’s logo. Customers are urged to take time to examine the photo identification tag whenever an Illinois American Water employee arrives at their home or business. Also, the Company does not accept payment at a customer’s house or business.

If customers suspect someone is trying to scam them, they should hang up, delete the email, or shut the door. They should then call their utility company at the number on their monthly bill or the company’s website, not the phone number the scammer provides. Illinois American Water customers would call 800-422-2782. If customers ever feel that they are in physical danger, they should call 9-1-1.

AMITA opens 2nd clinic for hepatitis C patients Baby boomers are the population most at risk for hepatitis C AMITA Health has opened a second clinic for patients with hepatitis C. The clinic at AMITA Health Adventist Medical Center Bolingbrook joins a clinic already treating patients at AMITA Health Adventist Medical Center GlenOaks.

The Bolingbrook clinic, under the direction of Rockford Yapp, M.D., is located in the hospital at 500 Remington Blvd. in Bolingbrook; patients with an appointment should come to the lobby desk and they will be sent to the clinic. For an appointment, physicians or patients should call (630) 856-7070. Currently, clinic hours are the second Wednesday of every month from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. and the fourth

Tuesday of every month from 4 to 6:30 p.m.

Yapp said he is glad to be part of the AMITA Health effort, which he called “a compassionate, important and productive way” to fight the disease. Hepatitis C is a significant public health risk, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC estimates that more than 3.5 million Americans have hepatitis C, although many are not diagnosed and even fewer are being treated. Almost 20,000 people died of the disease in 2014, according to the CDC. And in 2013, more people died from hepatitis C than from the next 60 infectious diseases combined, including tuberculosis, pneumonia and HIV. Baby boomers are the population most at risk for hepatitis C – both the clinic and the CDC urge everyone born from 1945 to 1965 to be screened for the disease. The virus was not identified until the late

1980s, and blood products were not screened for it until the early 1990s, so many baby boomers were exposed through transfusions. Others were exposed through unregulated tattoos and intravenous drug use.

Hepatitis C usually is usually asymptomatic for a period of 20 to 30 years. By the time a patient has symptoms – which include fatigue, jaundice, itching, and fluid retention in the abdomen and legs – they probably have developed serious complications such as cirrhosis.

Treatment options for hepatitis C used to be long, difficult and only sometimes successful, Yapp said.

Until recently, treatment involved a year-long interferon regimen that caused significant side effects and cured relatively few patients. In the last few years, though, new drug treatments have been developed that have very few side effects and can cure almost 100 percent of patients, usually in eight to 12 weeks.

Seniors bike world from comfort of home Technology keeps residents active and engaged while letting them cycle through familiar neighborhoods or foreign lands

Imagine biking through Switzerland one day and Lake Tahoe the next.

Now imagining doing that at 97 years old and from the comfort of the living room. That’s just what Otto Soyk is able to do thanks to a new innovative program.

The first senior living community in the United States to do so, Senior Star at Weber Place is utilizing BikeAround ™, an innovative program developed in Sweden to help senior adults, particularly those with dementia, stay active and engaged.

BikeAround™ pairs a stationary, individually adjustable assistive bike with Google Street View to take those using the bike on a virtual ride anywhere in the world.

The combined action of biking and choosing their own destination, practically anywhere in the world, is meant to provide both the low-impact exercise for the body as well as simulating their mind to recall memories and helps lower anxiety.

“They are able to come in, and we can punch in their hometown or wherever they want to go and they start telling stories and connecting--that’s what they need,”

said Elizabeth Bartleman, executive director at Senior Star Weber Place. “It’s just so innovative and who wouldn’t want to relive some of their happiest times.”

Users input a street address of a place that means something to them, a childhood home or other location they wish to travel to anywhere around the world that the Google Street View has photographed, and use the pedals and handlebars to “bike around” their old neighborhoods and/or destinations that have personal significance.

Senior Star schedules the sessions so that a group can come together to take turns, inviting that conversation. Soyk, who was taking a bike ride, stopped to talk about the 17-city tour he and his wife, who recently passed, took together.

For Helen Soto, 80, it was an emotional ride when she biked through pictures of Puerto Rico, before the hurricane, and spotted her church.

Once it was fully developed, Nilsson put the screen on the market in the gaming industry as simulation equipment. Anne-Christine Hertz at Center for Health Technology Halland learned of the new jDome® technology and had the innovative idea to use it with seniors.

Cure for alcoholism was a boon for business, Dwight From 1879 to 1890, more than 10,000 had taken the Keeley cure

BY MYKE FEINMAN OF THE PAPER (DWIGHT, ILLINOIS) The Keeley Cure initially had gold in it, but the real gold was in the number of satisfied alcohol or other drugaddicted customers who were cured and the social support system from the community of Dwight.

Lynn Neville brought the history of the Keeley Institute to life for those attending a recent meeting of Dwight Historical Society at the Prairie Creek Public Library in Dwight.

The location was appropriate because the building itself is the former clubhouse utilized by patients at the Keeley Institute, located adjacent to the Country Mansion restaurant, also a former Keeley building.

Dr. Leslie E. Keeley, the son of a country doctor, was born in 1832 in New York. He headed West as a young man, graduating from Rush Presbyterian Medical College in Chicago. In 1864, he enlisted and served in the Union Army during the Civil War. “As an assistant field surgeon, he knew opiates were used as anesthesia, as well as alcohol, and the opiates, alcohol and tobacco were also often used in excess by the soldiers ... and they became addicted,” Neville said.

Keeley’s theory was that drunkenness is a disease.

“Keeley suspected that the alcohol, opiates and tobacco contained ‘toxic germs’ that — taken in large and repeated quantities — poisoned the brain, altered the cells and resulted in a disease,” Neville said.

Keeley came to Dwight in 1866, working as a traveling doctor on a 400-mile circuit.

While doing his house-call medical duties, he also worked on a cure for drunkenness. Major Curtis Judd, a prominent businessman in Dwight, became Dr. Keeley’s brother-in-law in 1888, and was a major financial backer for Keeley.

Keeley and Judd were two of the institute’s founding members. The third founding member was an Irish chemist, John Oughton, who joined Keeley in search of a cure.

“In 1879, after years of research and experiments and with Oughton’s help, Keeley was able to proclaim, ‘Drunkenness is a disease … and I can cure it,’” Neville said.

He created the Double Chloride of Gold Cure For Addictions. The cure was also sold through mail order. It was, however, never patented because then the formula would have to be disclosed.

From 1888 to 1895, the mail-order cure cost $5 for tobacco (about $140 in today’s dollars), $9 for alcohol ($250 today) and $10 for opium ($280 today).

From 1879 to 1890, more than 10,000 had taken the Keeley cure.

“As the Dwight Institute location started to be overwhelmed with patients, Keeley, with a vision of serving the world, decided in 1890 to 1891 to begin to open franchises. Between 1891 and 1965, the Keeley Institute had more than 126 Keeley franchises in operation.”

With the prosperous enterprise, “Keeley had visions of bringing thousands more people to Dwight for the SEE DWIGHT PAGE 5

Mayor’s State of the Village address DEAR EDITOR, On the afternoon of January 18, Mayor Roger Claar provided his view of the state of our Village at taxpayer funded and owned Bolingbrook Golf Club. If residents wanted to attend the event, they had to pay $70. Bolingbrook United believes the State of the Village should be held at Village Hall or Bolingbrook High School, during the evening, with no cost to attend. It should be open to all residents, and not just those who can afford to take time off of work and pay an exorbitant fee to attend.

During his address, Mayor Claar complained about empty retail spaces and mentioned how one was an “eyesore.” He stated there was nothing that could be done for such spaces. Instead of throwing in the proverbial towel, Mayor Claar should be taking action. Bolingbrook United believes an Economic Development Committee should be established immediately to help to revitalize these vacant spaces.

Not surprisingly, Mayor Claar failed to mention the Village is over $300 million dollars in debt and is set to incur tens of millions more upon the purchase of our water system from Illinois American Water. Bolingbrook United believes the Village needs to come to terms with the incred-

ible amount of debt; it cannot continue to kick the debt can down the road for future generations to solve.

Mayor Claar failed to properly address one of Bolingbrook’s top issues; waste removal. We believe the matter of waste management, including the use of cans/toters, should be a Village agenda item.

Bolingbrook United found it neither funny nor acceptable that Mayor Claar mocked residents who questioned where the plows and salt trucks were during the most recent snowfall. Village employees work hard and do a great job, but we now have half as many employees in the Public Works Department than we had ten years ago. Residents should not be insulted by their mayor for questioning a matter of safety in the Village; rather their concerns should be addressed.

Last Claar chastised state and federal politicians for not working together. This is incredible considering Mayor Claar frequently used Village meetings to put down/denigrate Bolingbrook United, their supporters and their suggestions and has refused to collaborate with Bolingbrook United Trustee Jaskiewicz. We believe our Village should not mirror our ineffective state and federal governments.

The mayor needs to collaborate with all trustees, even if they are of a different political persuasion.

Because Dwight officials knew other cities were courting Keeley to relocate his headquarters, talks were conducted in 1891 between Dwight officials and the Keeley Co. to work together to improve the village and keep the Keeley Institute in Dwight.

Among the improvements was the construction of the Chicago and Alton Railroad depot (now the home of the Dwight Historical Society).

At the peak of the Keeley years, 17 trains per day were stopping in Dwight, serving 700 new patients arriving each week. New arrivals were greeted by townspeople and

“Keeley patients were free to shop and walk the streets of Dwight, returning to the Institute for the lectures and counseling sessions, meals and for the gold cure injections and tonics,” Neville said.

Townspeople knew the rules: no gambling, no driving cars, no fraternizing between male and female patients and absolutely no sodas or alcohol.

“Tavern owners would watch out for Keeley patients and report a patient who tried to buy alcohol.”

By the 1890s, the Keeley was reporting that at least 300,000 people had been treated.

But along with success came copycats. Because there is nothing proprietary about the cure and it wasn’t patented, by 1900 there were 800 other “gold cures.” The number of Keeley franchises dropped to 70.

In 1900, Keeley changed the for-

mula to eliminate the gold in the cure. He died that same year at age 68. Major Judd retired and John Oughton lived in the Manse (now the Country Mansion) and by 1916 was the sole owner of the business.

Oughton’s oldest son, Dr. James H. Oughton Sr., was the medical director at the Keeley. But with prohibition around the corner, business continued to slow.

In 1892, the annual gross revenue for the Keeley was $727,000 in 1892 dollars. By 1920, after Prohibition went into effect, revenue fell to $75,000.

Dr. James Oughton was named president of the Keeley in 1925 after the death of his father, and the formula was changed again, with the term used as “tonic medicines.”

Prohibition was repealed in 1933, and the income spiked to more than $180,000 with 900 treated that year.

Throughout the history of the institute (which closed in 1966) the cure included many of the same supports, such as mutual sharing of difficulties, Alcoholics Anonymous roundups, church attendance, vitamin therapy, and nutritiousness and exercise.

“The Keeley Institute was good to and for Dwight,” Neville said, “and Dwight was good to the Keeley.”

SHORT Shooting woes hurt Bolingbrook in supersectioal loss to Montini at Lewis University

Like it had all season, the Bolingbrook girls basketball team played lights out defense in its Lewis University Supersectional match up with Montini Catholic - the topranked team in the state.

The Raiders forced the Broncos into 17 turnovers on 12 steals.

Unfortunately, too often those turnovers resulted in lost possessions instead of points as Montini ended Bolingbrook’s season with a 43-35 win.

“It was a good game,” Bolingbrook coach Chris Smith said. “Defensively, I couldn’t be mad. Although they shot a high percentage, we limited their shot opportunities.”

Montini converted on 15-of33 shot attempts for the game

and 5-of-12 from behind the three-point arc.

Bolinbrook, on the other hand, shot just 32 percent from the field and 12.5 percent from long range.

“We just had problems putting the ball in the basket,” Smith said. “You can’t go 16-of50 and expect to win games.

“We had by far our season low in turnovers with 10 – we just didn’t make shots. One of the things we talked about was having to make shots. We got 50 shot attempts up – Fifty. Their zone defense will do that to you, but I still feel like we didn’t execute the opportunities we had.

I thought we had a chance to attack the middle more than we did and we just settled for jump shots. We were 2-of-16 from three-point line.”

It was Bolingbrook’s first sectional championship since 2013.

“We have a lot to be proud of and we have a lot to learn from and we will get better,” Smith said. “We got it going back in the right direction. Hopefully the underclassmen learned from the seniors and what they went through and the efforts they went through to get the program back to the state it is in today and hopefully we grow from it.”

One of the players that Smith looks at to help continue the growth of the Raider program is sophomore Danyel Middleton, who scored a game-high 12 points on 6-of-12 shooting.

“She embraces the challenge and that is why I am a really big fan of hers,” Smith said

of Middleton. “She wants the competition and she wants to compete at that level and that is what makes her a special player.

She is the kind of kid you can build around to take it to that next level.”

For Middleton, this was the first time she had played in an atmosphere as electric as Neil Carrey Arena was Monday night.

“This is my first time in a big game like this,” she said. “We have to go harder. We can’t settle.”

Jahari Smith tallied nine points and grabbed with rebounds in her last game as a Raider, while fellow seniors Gabby Smith had five and Taylor Robinson added four. Sophomore Lynese Johnson also scored five.

“It was a hard loss, but we are going to stick together off the court now,” Gabby Smith said, “This group of seniors, we were really, really together. I am really happy and I am always going to love them for this.”

Jordan tabbed as All-CCIW Kamari Jordan (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook) and Kaitlin Aylward (Elmwood Park, Ill./Trinity) are University of St. Francis’ representatives on the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference All-Conference Women’s Basketball Team.

This is the third consecutive allconference honor for Jordan after she was an honorable mention selection in 2017 and a secondteam honoree in 2016.

A second-team pick this season, Jordan was among the CCAC’s per game leaders in points (15.8), assists (4.2), steals (2.2) and 3-pointers made (2.4). She also ranked sixth in free-throw percentage (.824), 10th in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.6) and 12th in 3-point shooting percentage (.397).

She scored at least 10 points in 17 of her 19 conference games and had a pair of 10-plus assist performances.

Aylward, also a second-team honoree, led the CCAC in points per game against conference opponents this season, averaging 19.6 in 17 contests.

She also ranked fifth in rebounding (8.2 per game), second in steals (3.4 per game), second in minutes played (33.8 per game) and 15th in field goal percentage (.472).

She poured in double-digit points 16 times and posted four double-doubles against conference opponents.

LEWIS SOFTBALL The Great Lakes Valley Conference announced on Monday (Feb. 26) that Lewis University’s Alise Perna (Naperville, Ill./Metea Valley) has been named the GLVC Softball Player of the Week for the period ending Feb. 25.

It’s her first player of the week honor and she is the first Flyer to win the award since Lauren Hanford won it on April 29, 2013.

“We are so proud and excited for Alise,” head coach Becky Pearl said. “She’s been hitting so well in practice and we were excited to see it translate this weekend.

She did not disappoint and hit the cover off the ball all weekend long.”

Perna registered 10 total bases to go along with a 1.111 slugging percentage and had an on-base percentage of .700 in helping

lead Lewis to a 3-2 mark this past weekend at the Lewis Dome Invitational in Rosemont, Ill. She was 2-for-3 against both Findlay and Wayne State then capped the weekend going 2-for2 with a grand slam and a careerhigh five RBI in the win over Lindenwood on Sunday morning.

TRACK AND FIELD Lewis University’s Allison Heinzer (Sugar Grove, Ill./ Kaneland HS), Lane Kadlec (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) and Cierra Pulliam (Plainfield, Ill./ Romeoville) were named to the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Midwest All-Region team on Monday.

The top-5 individuals in each event from each region earned All-Region distinction, in addition to each of the members of the regions’ top-3 relay teams.

The regions used for this award – Atlantic, Central, East, Midwest, South, South Central, Southeast and West – match those used during the cross country season.

Heinzer won the 400 meter run with a time of 56.48 seconds and was runner-up in the 200 meter dash with a mark of 24.61 seconds this past weekend at the GLVC Indoor Track and Field Championships.

She picked up provisional qualifying marks in both events for the NCAA Indoor Championships.

Kadlec earned a provisional mark in the shot put throwing 47 feet, 1.75 inches to place second in the event.

Pulliam, who was named GLVC Field Athlete of the Year, broke three conference records at the conference championships this past weekend.

She set the conference record in the triple jump with a jump of 42 feet, 8.75 inches.

She also set the conference record in the long jump with a jump of 19 feet, 7.75 inches to win the event.

She broke the conference record in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.63 seconds in the prelims and finished second in the event with a time of 7.61 seconds The Flyers next meet will be in two weeks, March 9-10, when they take part in the NCAA II Indoor Track and Field Championships in Pittsburg, Kan.

Last Saturday against Southern Indiana, Kelliher scored 28 points on 13-of-15 shooting from the field and grabbed 12 rebounds for her 12th double-double this season. She extended her school record for most points in a single season to 709 and she continues to lead Division II in scoring at 25.3 points per game. She’s also second in Division II in field goal percentage at 67.4 percent.

TENNIS The Lewis University men’s tennis team battled but came up short against No. 12 Drury, falling 5-4 Sunday (Feb. 25) in a match at Cooper Tennis Complex.

Alan Braschinsky (Tallinn, Estonia/Milna Harma) remained unbeaten in dual meets in both singles and doubles in 2018 after winning both of his matches. In singles, he moved to 5-0 at No. 1 singles after beating Nico Hadeler 5-7, 6-1, 10-6. He teamed with Oskar Lusti (Tallinn, Estonia) at No. 1 doubles as the tandem moved to 5-0 in 2018 with a 9-8 win over Leonardo Cerri and Gregor Kokalj.

Also winning for the Flyers (23) was the No. 2 doubles team of Andre Norasith (Elgin, Ill./South Elgin) and Anton Levitin (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Buffalo Grove), who defeated Augustin Diot and Sasha Mourier 8-4. It is the fourth straight win for the duo. Brendan Peterson (Elmhurst, Ill./York) also picked up a win, taking down Cerri 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6 singles.

Don’t quit work for school DEAR DAVE, My wife and I have $72,000 in debt from student loans and a car loan. We’re trying to pay off our debt using the debt snowball system, and we each make about $45,000 a year. She’s a teacher, and she’s planning on going back to school for her master’s degree, but she’s thinking about quitting her job to do this. She’ll be able to make more money with the additional education, and she would only be unemployed for two years.

The degree program will cost us $2,000 out of pocket per semester for two years. Does this sound like a good idea?

CHRIS DEAR CHRIS, There’s no reason for your wife to quit her job to make this happen. Lots of people — especially teachers — hold down their jobs and go back to school to further their education. I’m not sure trying to make it on one income when you’re that deep in debt is a good idea.

Whatever you do, don’t borrow

more money to make this happen. Cash flow it, or don’t do it.

We’re talking about $8,000 total, and you’ve got $72,000 in debt hanging over your heads already.

My advice would be to wait until you’ve got the other debt knocked out, then save up and pay cash for school. You could slow down your debt snowball, and use some of that to pay for school, but I’d hate to see you lose the momentum you have when it comes to getting out of debt.

The choice is yours, but don’t tack on anymore student loan debt. I know her income will go up with a master’s degree, so from that standpoint it’s a good thing to do. But if you do a good thing a dumb way, it ends up being dumb!
