Students gain new resource for math help Mathnasium of West Bolingbrook is looking to open in January at 270 W. Weber Road

A new center dedicated to helping students understand math is in the works for a business in Bolingbrook.

Mathnasium of West Bolingbrook is looking to open in January at 270 W. Weber Road, just off Lily Cache Ave. James and Michelle Martin, using “The GeniusMakers,” as their business name is planning on building a neighborhood mathonly learning center. The intent is to help students in grades 2-12 understand math by teaching in a way that makes sense to them.

“If math is a problem, Mathnasium can solve it. For students who already excel in math, the sky is the limit,” said Martin. “They will work to expand their math skills and with math learning made exciting, can see all the doors that being great in math can open.”

According to the group who is following a formula by the franchise that is Mathnasium, the Mathnasium Method™ has trans-

formed the way kids learn math for over a decade across 700+ centers in the US and Canada, with local centers popping up in Naperville, Orland Park, Downers Grove, and Hinsdale.

Mathnasium instructors use an unique assessment process to determine exactly what each child knows and what they need to learn. Next, the group designs a customized learning plan for teaching the concepts the student needs to master.

The Martins hope to partner with the Valley View School District.

New Metra station near completion in Romeoville 123 parking spots with 24 reserved for permit holders Construction continues on the Romeoville Metra stop and the village’s portion of the work is anticipated to be completed by Thanksgiving. Following that, Metra will be working with Canadian National to complete the platform and pedestrian crossing. Metra is expected to begin service in February.

The village board recently approved contracts for the landscaping surrounding the station and the vendor for the 123 parking spaces. Parking will be handled through Passport Parking, a company that services many major cities, including Chicago.

Reserved permit parking will be limited to 24 permits and will be sold on an annual ($250) and semiannual ($125) basis. Permits will go on sale in January and only Romeoville residents will be able to buy them during the first week. Permits will then be opened to everyone following that. Those who do not have parking permits will be charged $1 a day to park in the lot. There will be a pay station on site that accepts cash

and credit cards. The station will be integrated with the Passport Parking system, giving users who register the ability to pay online, via their mobile device, or to pay by phone. Users will be given the option to pay for their spots from the comfort of their vehicle, while they walk to the train, or even while they are on the train itself.

Located near the intersection of 135th Street and New Avenue, the station will be the first new stop on the Heritage Corridor since Metra’s creation in 1984 and the first new stop on any Chicagoland Metra line since 2011. The Heritage Corridor line drops passengers off in Chicago at Union Station.

“The Village has been waiting a long time for this Metra stop,” remarked Mayor John Noak. “This is going to be a convenience for area residents and businesses.”

New memorial to honor Vietnam vets

Bolingbrook keeps its vow to never forget the service of its veterans with a new memorial being dedicated at this year’s Veteran’s Day ceremony, Saturday, Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. at 375 W. Briarcliff Road.

From December 1961 through March 1973, 58,220 Vietnam Veterans died in service to the United States. At the end of the war, returning soldiers arrived home to disdain and disrespect receiving neither glory nor compassion.

According to organizers, although nothing can alter past actions, an inscribed stone erected at the Village of Bolingbrook’s Veterans Memorial (ad-

jacent to the entrance of Village Hall) will raise awareness of the sacrifices Vietnam veterans made for future generations.

In an effort to preserve history, community member Peggie McMillan, Bolingbrook’s 2017 Female Citizen of the Year, took the lead in the project described as a a silent tribute to the men and women who played a variety of roles during the long years of the Vietnam conflict. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Stone will stand as a special place where surviving soldiers, family and friends find comfort, solace and recognition.

In addition to paying homage, it is hoped that the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Stone provokes conversation in ways that connect younger generations to stories from the past.

RHS senior honored for community service As part of their longtime participation in the PepsiCo Showdown soccer tournament, the girls’ soccer program at Romeoville HS is involved in several community initiatives and service organizations.

On Oct. 30 PepsiCo Showdown Tournament Director Joe Trost visited RHS to present RHS senior Macayla Dwyer with an award for all of her volunteer efforts in our community including Feed My Starving Children and collecting books for needy children. Macayla received a voucher for concert or sporting event tickets and a $100 donation in her name to the charity of her choice.

Macayla was one of 1 students in the Chicago area honored with this recognition on National Speak Up for Service Day. Macayla plans to study civil engineering in college and is currently narrowing down her choice of the school she would like to attend.

Nibbling away at the Affordable Care Act

Insurance companies have already prepared for this and have cushioned the blow to them by charging higher premiums to everyone who buys in the individual market

As annual enrollment for Obamacare insurance approaches on November 1, the law itself and the people who have come to depend on it for health coverage are both facing an uncertain future.

President Trump’s recent executive actions affect the complicated insurance mechanics of the Affordable Care Act, and they haven’t been well explained in the news media. This column will explain how those changes affect you.

Congress has tried but has not been able to “repeal and replace” the law that has brought health insurance to some 10 million Americans who buy insurance on the state shopping exchanges and about 10 million more who gained access through Medicaid expansion.

The failure of Congress to pass the “repeal and replace” legislation did not mean, though, that the law would remain intact.

In mid-October President Trump’s executive action hollowed out a big chunk of the ACA, throwing insurance marketplaces into a tizzy and possibly resulting in higher prices and less coverage for many. In the end, the president’s actions may succeed in gutting the law that has divided so many Americans.

To understand this, let’s take a step back. Legislators who wrote the law knew that a big reason people did not buy health insurance was cost. Most middle class families without employer coverage struggled to pay the premiums in the so-called individual market where they had to shop. Those at the bottom of the income ladder either qualified for Medicaid or did without insurance. About 44 million Americans did not have insurance when the law took effect four years ago.

The ACA tried to make it easier to buy coverage, and Congress did that in

It required insurers to cover all people - sick or well - who applied for coverage in the individual market and offered two kinds of subsidies to help those with lower incomes.

One comes in the form of tax credits the government advances to shoppers who buy Obamacare - compliant policies that meet certain rules and regulations, such as offering 10 essential benefits. Prescription drug coverage is one.

Those subsidies are based on a family’s income and phase out when a family’s income exceeds 400 percent of the federal poverty level or about $98,000 for a family of four and $48,000 for a single person. People with lower incomes receive the largest subsidies.

Those tax credit subsidies are not affected by Trump’s order.

The other subsidy is called a costsharing subsidy, sometimes referred to as a CSR and aimed at Americans whose incomes are at or below 250 percent of poverty, about $62,000 for a family of four and $30,000 for an individual. They reduce the amount of out-of-pocket spending for people who get them. Those who qualify pay less for the coinsurance, deductibles and copayments a policy may require.

These are the subsidies on the chopping block. The president said the government will not continue funding

them which means the government simply will not pay insurance companies for reducing the out-of-pocket costs to policyholders. Policyholders will still get the subsidies unless Congress changes the law. Insurers will have to swallow the losses, at least for now.

If you get those subsidies, you’re not off the hook, though. Insurance companies anticipated that the president would axe the subsidies and they increased their premiums for most or all Obamacare policies, including the silver plans, the ones people must buy to receive the extra help with cost sharing.

The Congressional Budget Office just projected that premiums before the tax credits are applied would increase on average by about 20 percent.

In some states average rate increases have been much higher.

So who will be hurt the most by the Trump administration’s latest move which some experts argue undermines the stability of the health law?

Insurance companies have already prepared for this and have cushioned the blow to them by charging higher premiums to everyone who buys in the individual market.

People with incomes under 400 percent of poverty will still receive their tax credits, which will reduce their higher premiums, and they will continue to get their CSRs. Those in the individual market who have higher incomes and receive no tax credits to lower their premiums will feel the most pain. The Kaiser Family Foundation reports that 44 percent of buyers in the Obamacare market did not qualify for tax credits.

That’s almost 7 million people.

“Ironically, it is these unsubsidized folks who have complained the loudest about Obamacare’s big premiums and deductibles,” says Washington D.C. insurance consultant Robert Laszewski. “They will now have even more to complain about.”

The administration wants to let them buy cheaper policies that cover far less than Obamacare insurance. No. 4 Lewis University women’s volleyball earns pair of GLVC wins It was a balanced attack for the No. 4 Lewis University women’s volleyball team as it swept Maryville 25-10, 25-17, 25-10 Saturday (Nov. 4) in a Great Lakes Valley Conference match at Neil Carey Arena.

The Flyers had 12 score points in the match, led by 10 from Elizabeth Hyland (Plainfield, Ill./ Plainfield Central). Hyland also led the team with eight kills as 10 Flyers recorded kills.

Aly Schneider (Granger, Ind./ Penn) and Colleen Wilhelm (Euclid, Ohio/Lake Catholic) each had six kills, while Morgan Goodman (Cedar Hills, Mo./Home) and Maddie Seliga (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall) each had five kills. WIlhelm hit .857 for the match.

Haley Sobieralski (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) tallied 18 assists in the match, with Shayna Filippelli (Trinity, Fla./Mitchell) adding seven assists and Abby Becker (Menomonee Falls, Wis./ Menomonee Falls) chipping in with five assists.

The Flyers had a hitting percentage of .363 (39 kills, 10 errors, 80 attacks) and had 10 aces in the match, while the Saints hit -.025 (17-19-81).

Lewis also totaled 12 blocks in the match to one from Maryville.

The Flyers move to 25-2 on the year, 14-1 in the GLVC, while Maryville falls to 2-27, 1-15 in the GLVC. A match earlier, Lewis handed McKendree University its first conference loss, as the Flyers emerged victorious with the 2517, 22-25, 25-23, 19-25, 15-8 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over the Bearcats at Neil Carey Arena on Friday (Nov. 3). Lewis is ranked No. 1 in the NCAA Midwest Region, while the Bearcats are second.

Man arrested on sex charges in Plainfield Township Scott P. Flanagan, of Naperville, charged with child luring, criminal sexual abuse, and traveling to meet a minor

The Will County Sheriff’s Office is announcing the Oct. 30 arrest of Scott P. Flanagan, 25, of Naperville for child luring, criminal sexual abuse, and traveling to

meet a minor. The Sheriff’s Office was contacted on Saturday, October 28, around 11:45 am, by a concerned citizen who reporting seeing suspicious activity in a vehicle that was parked at Mather Woods Forest Preserve on Renwick Road, Plainfield Township.

Sheriff’s deputies went to the scene and spoke with Flanagan and an underage female.

Both stated that they had met via an online social media site and had met up on two or three prior occasions.

Flanagan was brought to the Sheriff’s Investigation Division where he was further questioned.

He made statements implicating himself and was then charged.

He was transported to the Adult Detention Facility. Additional charges are expected.

There’s nothing wrong with having some stuff, but many of today’s marketing messages can lead kids to believe it’s all about them. And the sad truth is advertising firms are often more aggressive with their teaching than parents are in theirs.

I would encourage you to find giving experiences in which you can participate as a family. Volunteering for a day at a homeless shelter is a wonderful example of giving that requires absolutely no money. Or maybe you could pull out your wallet, and spend the day shopping for groceries and Christmas gifts for families who are financially less fortunate.
