The cold didn’t scare away residents from attending Romeoville’s Halloween Fest hosted by the Parks & Recreation Department October 27 at Village Park.

Nearly 2,500 residents bundled up in the brisk fall weather for trick-or-treating, hayrides, a costume contest, games, a pumpkin patch and inflatables.

The annual free event is a cooperative community event sponsored by the Village of Romeoville, the Romeoville Chamber of Commerce and many local businesses and organizations.

For those looking for more Halloween fun, check out the 7th annual Costume & Cocktails event for those 21 years and over from 7 to 11 pm this Saturday, Nov. 4 at High Point Friendship Centre (175 High Point Drive). New industrial in line Duke Realty introduces concept plan for an approximate 150,000 sq.-ft. facility

A first look at a project by Duke Realty shows new industrial plans for a spec building near Route 53 and Enterprise Drive in Romeoville.

Duke Realty introduced a concept plan for an approximate 150,000 square-foot facility to be located near the Honeytree Subdivision.

According to Community Development Director Steve Rockwell, the property would run along Independence Boulevard. The developer is currently assembling the land near the Cornerstone Property which will have to be rezoned. The developer is currently looking to pursue comprehensive office service,commercial, light industrial, or hybrid commercial type usage.

Rockwell likened the property type to that of the current Ashley warehouse or Twin Carpets.

The construction of the building would include precast walls 32 feet in height, similar to the look of the building on Belmont and Taylor Road.

However, some residents have expressed concern about having an industrial building in close proximity to a neighborhood, fearing noise and traffic would interfere with daily living.

Rockwell explained trucks would only come in one way with access only from Route 53 with travel through to the traffic light on Naperville Road.

There would be no access to Honeytree, Pine Trail or Abbeywood Drive. Truck dock parking

would be located in the rear.

A preliminary plan shows landscaping plan to screen the property from the subdivision.

Current trees would remain and an eight-foot fence would be added. In addition, the vacant commercial corner at Honeytree and Route 53 would serve as a retention pond.

Mayor John Noak reminded residents that this is the beginning of a lengthy process and a public hearing will be held.

“I know some topics came up in planning and zoning; we spoke to some in the public and have offered to talk to the developer so everyone understands there are issues that need to be addressed and make certain that we have plenty of opportunity for feedback,” said Noak.

“The developer has worked with us for 18 years and I know that they want to be good neighbors.”

Noak said it is his belief that the developer is looking toward mid-range to smaller users in the community and that the village will work with them to ensure significant screening,minimize any truck impact; etc.

“We may even look at the final orientation of the building, maybe push off entrance away from the residential area---there are so many things that still need to be discussed,” said Noak. “We can all get together and see what that discussion will be, flush this out and make things work.”

Valley View to offer new advanced courses Trends show computer, mathematical occupations as the 5th fastest growing jobs

As the Valley View School District continues to review its curriculum, new advanced placement courses in computer science are being added as high school courses.

Looking to trends that show computer and mathematical occupations as the fifth fastest growing job sector, the district believes such courses will better prepare its students for this expected job growth opportunity.

Assistant Superintendent Rachel Kinder said, “We are responsive to students long-term planning and post secondary offerings. We are preparing them to do well and sit for the college board exams, directly linking them to earn college credit, offering them a well-rounded curriculum. Our AP students are seeking that challenge and this will prepare them.”

Using the existing computer science class as a starting point, AP Computer Science A, offered to grades 10, 11, and 12 will provide an additional step in the computer science class sequence and further develop computer science skills II. The AP Computer Science course is designed as a first level college course focusing on the fundamentals of computing, including problem solving, working with data, understanding the Internet, cybersecurity, and programming.

The AP Computer Science A course is intended to serve both as an introductory course for computer science majors and as a course for people who will major in other disciplines and want to be informed citizens in today’s technological society.

A second course, AP Computer Science Principles, will also be offered. With the rationale, that Computer science is everywhere, from smartphones and video games to music, medicine, and more, the district believes that the course will support students in un-

derstanding how computing and technology influences the world around them. Offered to all grade levels, students will learn how to creatively address real-world issues while using the same tools and processes that artists, writers, computer scientists, and engineers use to bring ideas to life. Students will develop computational tools to analyze and study data and work with large data sets to analyze, visualize, and draw conclusions from trends.

They will learn to design and implement computer programs that solve problems relevant to today’s society, including art, media, and engineering.

The programs were approved, 5-1, with Board Member Sally Guilbo casting the dissenting vote, questioning adding such courses while cutting other vocational courses, referring to such classes as fashion design, culinary arts and driver’s education which was done several years ago.

“Though I think computer science is an awesome idea,” said Guilbo, “I know throughout the community that there are those who are concerned about cuts in other programs ...the vocational programs. They would like to see some of the programs that can be used by the majority, to be brought back, before starting additions of other classes.”

Kinder said the district took into account many factors when determining its courses, explaining that low student interest warranted the end of certain classes like FACS. However, she noted that students still have several considerations for a robust career in tech and vocational studies through its partnership with Wilco.

“Those opportunities certainly remain for our students and can be taken as electives that interest

them,” said Kinder.

At the introduction of another potential course offering Chinese 1, Board Member Diane Parro did share the same concern as Guilbo, asking for data from four years ago that prompted the removal of classes like fashion design and the culinary arts.

“To member Guilbo’s point, there are children who may want to be a chef or take another vocation; we need to go back and investigate.

We have to have offerings for others; not all may be going to college.”

Kinder reported data could be researched and pulled from four years ago but confirmed that the decision was based purely on the numbers; noting the district couldn’t justify the staff for those courses, along with others such as German, that had such a low enrollment.

The district also brought forth an information report, to be approved at the next meeting, to offer Chinese I. The course is intended to provide students with a rigorous and relevant experience to learn Chinese. The adoption of Chinese as a language choice to replace German is expected to positively impact the students and our community. In order to select another language, approximately 2,000 students in grades eight through eleven were surveyed with Chinese as the overwhelming top choice, which supports current global trends.

The district states that students China’s huge market poses opportunities for economic growth and therefore career opportunities for Chinese linguists can be found in almost any field. Providing an opportunity to learn this language coincides with the district’s strategic plan goal to recruit, develop, and retain a high impact workforce.

“There are huge career opportunities for individuals with command of this language and it is well known that higher academic achievement is achieved when studying a language,” said Kinder.

Offering Chinese also means that VVSD is eligible to apply for a government-sponsored STARTALK grant, which could earn the district the fiscal support to offer summer programming dedicated to students and teachers for Chinese.

BY MARY SANCHEZ TRIBUNE CONTENT AGENCY A young mother of five, a survivor of recent cancer surgery, develops a new tumor - and discovers she is pregnant. The cancer is aggressive; to survive she needs chemotherapy, but that would buy only a few years more of life, if that. And it will kill the baby she is carrying.

What should she do?

What Carrie DeKlyen and her husband, a Michigan couple who faced this dilemma, decided has been the topic of much public commentary, most of it empathetic but some of it shallow and cruel.

Carrie DeKlyen chose not to undergo chemo, and she is now dead. Her child, named Life Lynn DeKlyen, was born just shy of 25 weeks after conception and died two weeks after her mother on September 20. A baby is considered full term around 39 weeks. Despite exemplary efforts by doctors, and being tagged as a “miracle baby” by media nationwide, Life didn’t have very good odds.

She weighed only 1 pound, 4 ounces at birth. In early September, Baby Life was delivered by C-section as her mother lay unconscious from a stroke brought on by her inoperable brain tumor. Carrie, 37 years old, left five other children, ranging in age from 2 to 18 years old.

Social media couldn’t hold back. What launched was almost a parlor game of “What would you do?”

Was Life’s mother selfish to deny her other five children their mother? Or was she a saint for

giving her baby a chance at life?

How about she was a mother facing a horrible decision that you wouldn’t wish upon anyone?

That’s fair.

Today, social media and internet discussion threads allow everybody to be a moral philosopher, although many don’t feel the obligation to be fair or empathetic or particularly rigorous.

The DeKlyens made their difficult choice in a manner consistent with their view that life starts at conception.

Abortion was never an option.

This view was obviously informed by the couple’s faith, and even their choice of name - “Life” - suggests perhaps a statement of principle, a political stand.

After the baby’s death, some remarked that the story would no longer resonate as a shining example of the pro-life ethos.

The cringeworthy rationale was that the family no longer had the child to hold up as an emblem of the cause.

Wrong. Carrie DeKlyen is still a great example of a woman choosing life for her child.

Others argued that the family’s faith was misplaced; God didn’t save the baby.

Yes, the family made religiously guided decisions.

The widowed father has been consistently quoted with the family’s view that God wanted them to choose the baby’s life over that of the mother.

“We’re pro-life,” Nick DeKlyen told the Detroit Free Press.

“Under no circumstance do we believe you should take a child’s life. (Carrie) sacrificed her life for the child.”

After the baby’s birth, Nick DeKlyen also made the decision that his wife had suffered enough and asked that her feeding tube and breathing machine be disconnected. She died soon after. Others with a more stringent views about what constitutes life might have

argued against that decision.

The fact that the family sold sweatshirts to raise money and used an internet crowdfunding site led to some tut-tutting that the family was taking pecuniary advantage of their plight.

However, despite the sanctimony of some internet commentators, most who contemplated the family’s tragedy were sympathetic.

People saw the mother as someone of faith and related. Or they viewed her as a mother, or as half of a loving marriage, or as a cancer patient, and related.

Wouldn’t it be grand if people were more compassionate in other instances as well? Yes, people questioned the decision to keep the baby. But what you didn’t hear was the sort of condemnation that befalls other women who, like her, have a lot of children, mounting hospital bills and a husband who isn’t able to provide.

Nick DeKlyen is out of work.

He’d reportedly quit work during all of this distress to be available to his family, also completely understandable.

People read these kinds of stories with different needs and agendas. Some want miracles.

Some want hope. And, in their lesser moments, some want to validate their beliefs on such matters as abortion, the proper place of faith in public policy and the right way to have a family.

But if we read and hear these stories, putting aside our egodriven need to be right, we recognize simply what they are: incredibly difficult decisions that families ultimately have to make alone, using their own understanding of what is right.

And it’s not for any of us to pass judgment.

Playing without QB Vespo, Bolingbrook falls to Warren in IHSA CLass 8A playoff opener

Bolingbrook’s football season came to an abrupt end Friday with a 28-14 home loss to Warren in the first round of the 8A playoffs.

The loss, while an upset in terms of the brackets, wasn’t all that shocking given that the Raiders (7-3) were playing without senior starting quarterback Anthony Vespo, who fractured his leg in the regular season finale against Lincoln-Way East.

So freshman quarterback Samuel Johnson got the call to take snaps under center.

It was a big ask for such a young kid, and while there were glimpses of talent and speed, he wasn’t able to get past a very tough Blue Devils (7-3) defense in a frigid battle.

“He ( Johnson) is a very gifted kid and he’s going to be a great

quarterback,” Raiders coach John Ivlow said. “Maybe we could have whittled down the package for him and simplified things, but he did a pretty good job under the circumstances.”

The Raiders’ offense was out of sync for much of the first half.

Illegal formations, two interceptions, and a fumble put the Raiders in a deep 21-0 halftime hole they could not get out of.

“We made more mistakes on offense with the ball handling tonight than we did all season.

You can’t expect to win that way,” Ivlow said. “Our offense didn’t have the right cadence.

I’m not sure if it was the cold or if we missed something, but it wasn’t our best effort.”

Johnson’s inexperience and the offense’s overall struggles to get any momentum stifled any potential rallies of their own.

Bears linebacker Acho talks to Plainfield athletes

If someone in Plainfield didn’t know better they would think the Chicago Bears had a bye week this week.

That is because just a day before the Bears were leaving for New Orleans in preperation of an Oct. 29 tilt with the Saints, veteran outside linebacker Sam Acho took time to come to Plainfield Central and speak with athletes as part of a program sponsored by Powerade.

He didn’t just make an appearance. Acho addressed studentathletes about sports and life and then took time to sign autographs, talke photos and answer an array of questions.

“The questions I was asked today were - when is (rookie quarterback) Mitch (Trubisky) going to throw more, what do I eat every day to put on weight - the answer is PB&J and Chipotle - and a little about how I started getting recruited,” he said. “The students ask unbelievable questions and you can tell that they are eager to learn and eager to make a change.”

The ‘Power Your School’ campaign awarded 500 schools across the country a $2,000 each for its athletic programs - totalling $1 million donated by the sports drink company this year.

Plainfield Central, chosen because of District 202’s partnership with the brand as well as the success of its teams, was the lone winner in the Chicagoland area.

“I am actively involved and one thing I love to do is talk to students and encourage them. As this was getting set up, I heard about the opportunity and I jumped aboard,” Acho said about coming to Plainfield to speak. “I was telling my wife it is kind of far away, but she said is awesome and said if I had a chance to do it, then go for it. I love being able to encourage people. It is a gift of mine and I just love being able to do it.”

Acho told the football players in the audience that their story - one of four winless seasons and an 0-39 record and then falling just one win shy of a playoff berth this seaosn - resonated with him.

“Just because people are on your side, does not mean they are in your corner,” he told the students.

Even in his professional career, Acho understands rough seasons.

In his seven years in the league, he has only played on a wining team twice and made the playoffs once - in 2014 ith the 11-5 Arizona Cardinals - only to lose in the wild card game.

“I can relate to being 0-39,” he said. “There was a time that we were 10-26 in my time in Chicago.

You have to block out the noise. It is like if you have a ship - it is the water that gets in the ship that sinks it. It is not what is inside, but it is something that is outside. So, that is a reminder, don’t let outside noise sink your ship. The thing people might understand now is don’t get lost in the sauce.

“Sometimes your losses are your biggest lessons and it makes the wins that much sweeter.”

He told the student-athletes

not to let what they hear in the hallways or on social media affect what they do.

“You try and block it out,” he said. “I even watch ESPN sometimes or the NFL Network and I am waiting for the Bears highlights and they don’t show them - whether we win or lose - and even if we win, they are showing the highlights of the bad plays. I am tired of hearing about the bad news Bears, we are the good news Bears and we need to start delivering some good news.”

Acho said that good news has come as of late with the Bears winning two in a row heading into New Orleans - but that did not surprise him.

“The thing people haven’t seen is that we have been playing well for three years,” Acho said of the Bears’ defense. “If you turn the film on, you will see that ever since Vic (Fangio) got here as defensive coordinator, we have had three good years of film. We haven’t had the turnovers people were looking for, now we are starting to reap the benefits of the hard work we have put in. I am not surprised that we are playing, this is what we expect of ourselves.”

Flyer soccer advances to GLVC semifinals Two first half goals for the Lewis University men’s soccer team were able to hold up in a 2-1 win over Illinois-Springfield Sunday (Oct. 29) in a Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament quarterfinal match at Lewis Stadium.

The Flyers (12-4-1) got on the board first when a hand ball in the box led to a penalty kick, which John Horstman (Godfrey, Ill./Marquette Catholic) converted for his fifth goal of the season in the game’s 19th minute.

Nico Mueller (Braunschweig, Germany/Raabeschule Braunschweig) then tallied his 12th goal of the year on a pass from Edgar Garcia (Berwyn, Ill./Morton West) in the 35th minute for a 2-0 advantage.

It was the sixth game-winning goal on the season for Mueller and he has scored the past five game-winning goals for the Flyers.

The Prairie Stars (8-8-1) answered in the 38th minute when Fernando Galdeano scored, with assists from Harry Hiscock and Steven Albers.

Lewis had a 17-10 shot advantage for the game and took 10 corner kicks to two from IllinoisSpringfield.

Philip Huang (Flossmoor, Ill./ Homewood-Flossmoor) made four saves in goal for Lewis.

With the top two seeds losing Sunday, the No. 3 seed Flyers are the top seed remaining in the GLVC Tournament.

They will be taking on No. 7 seed Southern Indiana Friday (Nov. 3) at either 6 PM or 8:30 PM ET. The game will take place at Carroll Stadium on the campus of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.

VOLLEYBALL The Great Lakes Valley Conference announced on Monday (Oct. 30) that Lewis University junior outside hitter Elizabeth Hyland (Plainfield, Ill./ Plainfield Central) and sophomore outside hitter Alexandra Preuss (Elmhurst, Ill./York) have

been selected as the Baden/ GLVC Women’s Volleyball Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, for the period ending October 29th.

This is Hyland’s third offensive award of the season and fifth time overall, while this is the first time Preuss has been recognized by the conference. Both helped the Flyers to a pair of three-game sweeps over Drury (Oct. 27) and Missouri S&T (Oct. 28) last weekend.

“I was looking forward to see how we’d respond as a team (after losing to Bellarmine),” Lewis head women’s volleyball coach Lorelee Smith said. “I thought we immediately set a great tone, both offensively and defensively, and Elizabeth and Alex played a big part in our team success.”

Hyland averaged a team-best 5.4 kills-per-set and hit .338 (27 kills, 5 errors, 65 attacks) in five sets of action. She opened with a double-double against Drury with a match-high 16 kills and 13 digs, while notching 11 putaways in the sweep over the Miners.

Preuss averaged 7.3 digs-perset, including a career-high 22 digs in the sweep over Drury.

Those 22 digs are the secondhighest for any Flyer player this season.

• The No. 6 Lewis University women’s volleyball team made short work of Missouri S&T, as the Flyers claimed the 25-12, 25-12, 25-16 Great Lakes Valley Conference sweep over the host Miners at the Gale Bullman Multi-Purpose Building on Saturday (Oct. 28).

BASKETBALL Loyola University used a 20-9 run in the second half and shot 91.7% (22-for-24) from the free throw line to secure the 79-63 exhibition victory over the Lewis University men’s basketball team at Gentile Arena on Saturday (Oct. 28).

Lewis senior forward Nick Norton (Downers Grove, Ill./ Downers Grove North) topped the Flyers with 15 points, including three trifectas, and five rebounds.

The Flyers also received 11 points from junior center Frank Vukaj (Davison, Mich./Davison), while junior forward Delaney Blaylock (Wyoming, Mich./Godwin Heights) narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

Lewis shot 39.7% (25-for-63) from the field, while the Ramblers knocked down 48.1% (26-for-54) of their attempts.

The Flyers turned the ball over 16 times, leading to 17 Loyola points.

The Flyers conclude the exhibition campaign on November 5th, as they head to Normal, Ill., for a 2 PM showdown with Illinois State.

TENNIS The tandem of Dora Andrejszki (Budapest, Hungary/Dozsa Gyorgy) and Nora Mindiyarova (Moscow, Russia/Gimnasium 1577) of the Lewis University women’s tennis team combined to win the Baili Camino Draw at the Roberta Alison Fall Classic, hosted by the University of Alabama on Saturday (Oct. 28).

After winning their first round match Friday, they came back Saturday and defeated Caroline Kelly of Mississippi State and Laura Marti of Clemson 6-2.

They then defeated the top seed in the draw, Smith Hinton and Jacqueline Pelletier of Alabama, 7-5 in the final.

Oana Trus (Sighetu Marmatiei, Romania/Regele Ferdinand) and Simone Parn (Parnu, Estonia) dropped their second round match today in the Marouschka Van Dijk Draw 7-5 to Amelia Campbell and Julia Streif of Tennessee-Martin and then defeated Olha Burak and Mizuki Sakurai of Tennessee-Martin

The defense, playing with their backs to the wall most of the night, kept the game from spiraling out of control and prevented the Blue Devils’ offense from running the score up. The offense got a needed boost as well with a pair of long touchdown runs by junior running back Quentin Pringle.

“He’s a great runner and he’s had some big games for us,” Ivlow said. “Very quick and very talented.”

Pringle’s biggest game of the season was a 421yard performance against Bradley-Bourbonnais in the regular season. He had nine carries for 190 yards in the loss to the Blue Devils, with 170 of them coming on his 87- and

83-yard rushing touchdowns to keep the Raiders within striking distance.

While it wasn’t to be, Ivlow will have plenty of experienced players on his roster in the 2018 season to back up Johnson, who will likely be under center fulltime for the Raiders. His first start as a high schooler was a trial by fire, but also a taste of what a high-level game is like.

The regular season schedule won’t be an easy one for Johnson or the Raiders, but it is something they’re accustomed to. They’re ready for tough teams like Warren after going through the meat grinder that is the Southwest Suburban. With a little better luck—and health— it’s a good bet the Raiders will be right back in the hunt in 2018. All the tools are there.

When should you quit that day job I always tell people to first get to a point where their side hustle is generating almost as much money as their day job DEAR DAVE, I make about $25,000 a year in my day job, but I have side jobs as a personal trainer and a DJ. I’ll make about $10,000 this year as a trainer, and $25,000 to $30,000 working events as a DJ. I’ve almost got all my debts paid off, and I love both of my side jobs. I was wondering how to tell when I’m ready to leave my day job and concentrate on personal training and my DJ work.

STEVE DEAR STEVE, I always tell people to first get to a point where their side hustle is generating almost as much money as their day job. I want the boat pulled as close to the dock as you can get it, so that when you make the jump from the dock to the boat you don’t hit the water.

In your case, I would want the $10,000 you earn from personal training to look more like $20,000. When you reach that level, combined with what you’re making as a DJ, it would create a pretty safe situation for you to quit your day job.

Maybe you could cheat a little on the personal trainer money, because you’re making as much or more as a DJ as you are in your day job. Otherwise, you’re giving up $25,000 for $10,000 and only hoping the personal training gig will grow. That’s not a good idea. I’d like to see that hope proven a little bit more before you walk away from a day job.

A credit union is run more like a cooperative. Technically speaking, it’s operated not for profit, and the owners are the credit union members, who are also customers.

As a customer of a credit union, whatever you pay into the credit union – the “profit” – is returned to the members in the form of increased services or actual dispersements. Sometimes, you actually get a check from the credit union.

A lot of banks don’t like credit unions, and say they have an unfair advantage because of their non-profit status. This really isn’t true. Credit unions, with whatever “profits” are made, put that money right back into creating cheaper checking accounts, better interest rates on loans, or higher interest rates on savings.

A bank could do the same thing, if it were willing to make less profit. So, there’s no disadvantage. They’re just trying to keep stockholders happy and sell stuff to customers. But really, that all means nothing if you don’t get good service from the organization!
