Village celebrating Black History Month Feb. 11 Free public event is hosted by Bolingbrook’s Black History Awareness Club

To promote diversity and unity, the Bolingbrook community is coming together once again to celebrate Black History Month.

With a line up of talent from various speakers and artists, including 2017 Award recipient Rev. Jesse L. Jackson Sr., who will be honored, the 19th annual Community Wide Black History Celebration is Saturday, Feb. 11, from 2 to 5 p.m. at Bolingbrook High School Auditorium, 365 Raider Way. The free public event is hosted by the Bolingbrook’s Black History Awareness Club, and sponsored by the Valley View School District 365U, the Village of Bolingbrook, the Bolingbrook

Arts Council, the Fountaindale Public Library and a host of local businesses.

According to the group, the event is held annually during Black History Month, and is geared to all residents regardless of race and origin to assist in building bridges of tolerance and understanding.

Founder of the club, Janice Haywood said, “We have proudly reached the local communities for 19 years. This event connects the community with organizations and businesses by providing information that will increase awareness and understanding of African American Heritage.”

Event organizer and founding member of the club, Bernard Winston explains that Black History Month is one month of the year that has been set aside so all

Americans can honor the past of people who were brought to this country in political bondage.

“It is an important period when the younger generation can take time to sit and listen to their elders share heartfelt moments of their own experience and struggles when they were young,” said Winston. “It is a time when we all can cry together over all souls that died during the passage to this country on

slave ships. It is a time when we can cry about many of the laws and societal rules that this country has adopted that continues to hold us in bondage even without the chains.”

This year’s theme for the event is “Unity in the Community,” with Master of Ceremony Morgan Tuck, a BHS Alumni and WNBA player for the Connecticut Sun. “It also imperative to make

sure that my family, my kids and my community to know that Black History Month is a time when people of African ancestry can come together in memory of our rich past that has largely been hidden from us,” said Winston. “It is a time when we are given the opportunity to learn about many of our contributions and accomplishments which have historically been taken for granted.”

Darryl Van Leer will be performing his “emotionally riveting” one-man show, a vivid portrayal of some of history’s most important and influential African American figures such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X and Thurgood Marshall.

In addition, honor roll students are introduced from VVSD middle schools and for the second year, scholarships will be given out to seniors attending BHS who have been accepted to college.

Local agency offers tips to help save

Pay yourself first to create savings and remember there is always something you can cut--sage advice for those looking to create a new budget for the new year.

The Community Service Council of Northern Will County (CSC) recently presented a program on budgeting and credit for White Oak Library District patrons as part of the library’s New Year, New You series.

CSC Executive Director Robert Kalnicky said it is all about training your brain to save.

“You have to stop making excuses as to why you can’t save,” said Kalnicky. “You also have to be honest with yourself--do you need the $5 Starbucks? It is mind-blowing how $3 and $5 items here and there can wreck your budget.”

One way to start is to be mindful of your spending; start tracking how much you spend each day in a journal for at least two weeks—see exactly where your money is going and use cash---using a debit card is too easy, says Kalnicky. “It somehow becomes more meaningful

when you see the money leaving your wallet.”

He also suggests paying yourself first to create a savings account, just as you would any other bill and to do it on pay day when you won’t miss it. “No amount is too small to start,” he said. “Do a budget, pare down and pay yourself first.”

Without setting a savings goal, most end up with unaccounted money which usually ends up being spent.

“You have to stay disciplined by setting a targeted savings goal and do not touch it--you have to see the big picture,” said Kalnicky.

“Sometimes, out of sight, out of mind works best. Open a savings account at a bank separate from where you normally bank--it makes it harder for you to touch your savings that way.”

He reiterated that the key to a successful savings plan is sticking to it even during the tough times.

Pick “your” number and never let your balance go below that--setting up alerts through your bank to help you keep track. It is also never a good idea to spend all you money at once on all your bills and have nothing to fall back on, he said.

“Your savings account may be building and it looks pretty good, so you splurge on a trip. Next thing you know, you’re back to where you started,” said Kalnicky. “At the end of the day, it is up to you to meet your goals and build that cushion where you feel comfortable.”

A general rule of thumb is not to exhaust your savings on items that will take you more than three months to recover the full amount.

Try to live within a budget that is half of your earnings so if you’re wages were ever cut, you would not be over extended.

tended can have a snowball effect, explains Kalnicky. A credit report tells lenders who you are financially; how much debt you have, whether or not you make payments on time and also shows any judgements against you. Everyone is entitled to one free credit report each year from Transunion, Equifax, and Experian, the three credit reporting agencies, lenders use to check your score.

To ensure accuracy of your information, obtain a copy of your credit report from each credit bureau and check it. If there are any errors, and often times, there are, have them corrected in writing. How often your credit report is checked, also affects your credit score. You do not want to keep applying for credit because it inadvertently lowers your score, whether or not you are extended that credit.

The best way to build your credit is to apply for credit at a retail store or apply for a small loan; pay your bills on time; and keep your debt levels low. Kalnicky explains creditors look at what percentage of credit you are using--you should only be using 30 to 35 percent of what is available to you. It is not a good idea to max anything out or to close anything.

“It’s all a balancing act,” said Kalnicky. “Creditors look at the length of time you have held a particular credit card and been in good standing and how much credit you have in relation to how much debt you have. So if you are looking to close any accounts, the newer accounts would be the better option.”

Kalnicky said part of the mission of the CSC is to assist people in achieving their goals and encourages residents of the Will County area to utilize its services and take advantage of programs available.

He said the agency will be providing additional community outreach in the coming months and plans to partner again with the White Oak Library and Fountaindale Library Districts for Money Smart Week in April. For more information about the agency, call 815-886-5000 or visit www.thecsc. org.

The CSC was founded in 1973 as a social service agency serving residents of Bolingbrook, Romeoville and surrounding communities.

CSC was incorporated as a 501(c)3 non-profit agency in 1978.

The agency is certified by HUD to provide housing counseling by agency housing counselors, at no cost, primarily in the areas of mortgage default and rental evictions. Services for clinical counseling are provided by licensed professional counselors on an affordable fee schedule. Staff is experienced in a full range of counseling, such as marital, depression, divorce, parent-child relations, blended marriage concerns, and other problems.

The agency also offers Anger Management groups for both adults and teens. Licensed CADC counselors conduct DUI evaluations and drug assessments.

The agency also has a court approved Domestic Violence program.

New trustee takes seat on village board Well-known community member Lourdes (Lou) Aguirre appointed

Well-known community member Lourdes (Lou) Aguirre took a seat on the Romeoville Village board, after Trustee Sue Micklevitz retired.

Mayor John Noak and the village board appointed Aguirre as village trustee to fill the remainder of Micklevitz’s term, which expires April 2019.

“We had a great trustee retire; she was a fantastic trustee, a great

asset, and served us very well,” said Noak. I want to thank her for her service as well.”

“Lou will be a great addition to the village board. She brings experience and knowledge both as a longtime resident and business owner within the community,” said Noak.

Aguirre has been a Romeoville resident since 1969 and has owned Lou’s Styling Place in Romeoville since 1989.

She is very active in the community, having served on the Board of Directors for the Romeoville

Area Chamber of Commerce since 2011, Romeoville Fire and Police Commission since 2012 and has been a Romeoville Rotary Member since 2016.

“I know I have big shoes to fill; she has been a great trustee,” said Aguirre.

“It is a great honor to serve my own community. I was careful and mindful serving on the police and fire commission. I felt great pride in being able to serve and bring in the great police and fire professionals here. And I also plan to bring this type of attention and pride to this job as trustee—the best I can be for you and for the community.”

Students chosen for Chicago art exhibition Students chosen for Feb. 26 Illinois High School Art Exhibition (IHSAE) at the Zhou B Art Center in Chicago Art work created by five students from Romeoville High School and four from Bolingbrook High School have been selected to participate in the Feb. 26 Illinois High School Art Exhibition (IHSAE) at the Zhou B Art Center in Chicago.

RHS participants include Sarah Romy, painting; Alexander Moran, photography; Lizet Audelo-Luna, mixed media; Jacob Teodoro, drawing; and Victoria Zuchara, ceramics.

BHS participants will be Nicole Bond (2 entries), painting and mixed media; Jakob Abderhalden, photography,

Courtney Washington, ceramics; and Greer Jimenez, design.

The IHSAE will open its doors from 10 a.m. to noon for pre-exhibition college conversations.

Students will have a chance to speak with college representatives regarding post-secondary education.

The student artists will be honored at a noon reception followed by a 3 p.m. awards ceremony.

The exhibition will be open to the public starting at noon.

Zhou B Art Center is located at 1029 W. 35th St. in Chicago.

Students putting together plywood motorcycles By the end of this week, Wood View Elementary School students will have built 11 different nearly full-sized plywood motorcycles with skills most of them probably never knew they had.

Organized in cooperation with the Center for Mathematics, Science and Technology at Illinois State University, the Monster Chopper Challenge is designed to show children there is no limit to their capabilities.

Wood View kindergartners and 5th graders began working on the project Tuesday and will likely finish in several days.

“The idea is first they’re working together and second they’re using their engineering brain to do something they’ve never done before,” said Wood View Library Media Center Director Felix Soto.

Turn laundry piles into smiles

Everyone wears clothes, so the whole family should do their share

Do mountains of dirty laundry make your winter days turn gloomy no matter the weather? Does your dog think those piles of unwashed sheets and towels are his personal bed? No matter how big or small your laundry piles are, here are some tips to help you quickly turn those piles into smiles.

KEEP SUPPLIES NEARBY Pre-wash treatment, detergent, fabric softener, bleach, etc. should be within easy reach. Store them on a shelf over the washer, in a bin on top of the dryer, in a nearby cabinet, or on a storage cart next to the washer or dryer. Consider having a spot for empty hangers, a hanging rod, a drying rack (I use one that attaches to the wall) and a wastebasket (for tossing dryer lint).

GET THE FAMILY TO HELP Have a hamper in each bedroom, and possibly each bathroom, to make it convenient for family members to deposit their dirty clothes. Consider using a lidless hamper, since opening a lid is an extra step that may prevent dirty clothes from getting where they belong.

Make family members responsible for emptying pockets and turning socks right-side out. Your family can also help empty the dryer (even a 5 year-old can

DEVELOP A LAUNDRY ROUTINE One option is to do a load every day or so, as needed. You might choose Monday for whites, Tuesday for bedding, etc. You might want to wash a load overnight and then toss the clothes into the dryer first thing in the morning while you’re getting dressed. You might prefer to do it in one marathon session, devoting a day to doing all the laundry.

No matter what your preference, just be sure you have a laundry routine that you can maintain.

USE LABELED BINS FOR SORTING You can use separate laundry baskets for each category, hang separate laundry bags on hooks, or purchase a laundry sorter that has a number of separate compartments. Label the containers with the appropriate categories, such as whites, darks, towels, delicates etc. Another option is to sort loads according to family member. Either way, family members should be responsible for making sure that their dirty clothes hamper gets emptied into the proper sorting bin by laundry day.

PUT CLEAN CLOTHES PUT AWAY The job of laundry isn’t finished until the clothes are put away. Everyone should be responsible for putting away their own clothes within a predetermined amount of time, e.g., once a week. When clothes have an assigned place to go (e.g., undies in this drawer, pajamas in that drawer, t-shirts on a shelf in closet), putting them away should go fairly quickly.

When everyone who wears clothes in your household pitches in, you can have a simple routine for getting laundry done and clothes put away on a regular basis.

USE A SEPARATE “CLEAN CLOTHES” LAUNDRY BASKET FOR EACH HOUSEHOLD MEMBER Label the baskets and place folded clean clothes into the appropriate baskets as you empty the dryer. Items that aren’t affected by wrinkling (socks, undies) can be placed into a single basket for other family members to sort. Everyone can help fold towels as well.

All-star game give area cagers chance to shine Voyager Media hosts All-Star game March 19 at USF In 2008 the Plainfield Enterprise hosted its first preps All-Star Basketball game for area high school seniors. That game featured only Plainfield schools, the coverage area of The Enterprise.

“Prior to 2009, there were three of the four Plainfield high schools,” said Sports Editor Mark Gregory.

When The Enterprise became part of Voyager Media Publications, the coverage area eventually expanded to 15 communities in four counties. Be-

tween The Enterprise, The Sentinel and The Bugle newspapers, the game features some of the best senior athletes from Joliet Central, Joliet West, Bolingbrook, Romeoville, Downers Grove North, Downers Grove South, Westmont, Niles West, Maine East, Notre Dame, Plainfield East, Plainfield North, Plainfield Central, Plainfield South, Minooka, Joliet Catholic Academy, Benet Academy, Maine South, Lockport, Lisle and Northridge Prep.

“After the purchase by Voyager Media we went more north, getting Bolingbrook and Romeoville players involved...then we slowly added Downers Grove high schools then the Niles area schools.”

Voyager Media eventually had to move the event to University of St. Francis in Joliet to accommodate the growing crowd.

“The move to USF really made for a more legit All-Star game,” said Gregory.

“Holding it in a college setting, in a larger venue than a high school gym, really makes the All-Star games something special,” said Pat Ryan, advertising director.

O’FALLON — Before a nearcapacity crowd of 3,790, the topranked team in Class 4A boys basketball, the Raiders of Bolingbrook (21-0), rolled past Belleville East, on Saturday night.

The Panther Dome, seating capacity 3,950, was the site of the 3rd Annual Bank of O’Fallon Shootout at O’Fallon High School.

O’Fallon is located in the MetroEast section of St. Louis. O’Fallon is 17 miles east of The Gateway City.

After a lack-luster effort at Lockport on Friday night, the toprated Raiders wanted to make amends, before the near-capacity crowd, in O’Fallon.

Led by a 31 point, 16 rebound effort from Nebraska-bound Nana Akenten, the Raiders wore down and eventually rolled to an 85-70 victory over the Lancers (12-10).

Belleville East’s Illinois-bound Javon Pickett, took home gamescoring honors with 32 points.

With four minutes, remaining in the contest, Belleville East’s Jaylen Lacey buried a 3 to bring the Lancers within 62-58. The fu-

ture Cornhusker sharp-shooter Akenten, fired in his fifth longrange 3, of the game, to extend the Raider lead 65-58. Akenten’s trey ignited a 10-2 run that finally put away the Lancers.

Raider junior guard Kaleb Thornton’s steal and score would extend the lead to 67-58.

Lacy would add two free throws before Thornton (18 points, 4 assists, 2 steals) and another member of the Raider youth corps, sophomore Tyler Cochran (11 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals) would score for a 71-60 Raider lead.

Akenten would nail a free throw for his 29th point of the night with a 1:39 left in the contest.

“We faced some adversity tonight with a couple of us sick and we came out of here with a big win, “ Thornton said. “Our team is amazing. We have so many guys who can really play. Being able to play with this team, really helps me to be better. The Bolingbrook wrestlers had a successful day at the Lockport Regional, sending four to next weekend’s Normal Sectional.

At 126 pounds, Dylan Burnoski (29-1) injury defaulted his championship match to place second.

He said the default was a precaution and the injury will not keep him off the mat.

“There was no reason for me

to go out and risk getting hurt more,” he said. “I already qualified. I will be back out there last year, this was my first (loss) of the season, so I will be back on top.”

After Burnoski advanced, there was a lull in Bolingbrook wins until Isaiah Herrera started a run of three in a row at 195.

All three wins came on the third-place mat, where it is win or go home.

“This is really good to get through my senior year,” he said. “You have to have heart

(when you are facing elimination). I don’t want to give into someone I know is beatable, so I had to wrestle hard. My teammates are always pushing me and that is where I got the heart.”

Following Herrera was Brandon White, who placed third at 220.

“It was hard,” White said. “In my semifinal match, I was hoping to win and not have (the pressure).”

White said Herrera’s win helped him fight.

“He is one of my best friends and if he is going to push and he is going to fight, so am I,” he said. “We both wrestled our hardest and we both ended up getting the third-place and advancing.”

Ian Bazan followed those two with a third at 285.

“It was really tough,” he said.

“This is my senior year and I wanted to get to the next level.

Watching (Herrera and White), I wanted to get to the next level with them and that inspired me.”

Locals ready for playoffs

The IHSA playoffs for girls Class 3A and 4A basketball is right around the corner and the Voyager Media teams are ready.

Most of the Voyager Media schools all feed into the East Aurora Sectional complex this season, coming out of four regionals, three of them hosted by local schools.

Benet Academy holds the No. 1 seed in the sectional and hosts its own regional.

The Redwings open play at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14 against the winner of No. 16 Neuqua Valley and No. 17 East Aurora.

“Benet is pleased to receive the No. 1 seed in Aurora East Sectional,” said Benet coach Joe Kilbride. “As in years past, we feel that our strength of schedule has us well prepared for the state tourney. We know that we have a very tough road ahead with quality opponents in the early rounds but hope to enjoy the ride and see how far we can get.”

The regional championship game on Feb. 16 could have another local team as No. 8 Plainfield North takes on No. 9 Lemont at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 14.

“We are looking forward to

having a good regional round,” said Plainfield North coach Reggie Lemon. “This is the best seeding in Plainfield North girls basketball so we need to take advantage of it. Our goal is to get back to the regional championship game from two years ago.”

In the Oswego Regional, Minooka holds the No. 3 seed in the sectional and will open play Wed. Feb. 15 at 6 p.m. against the winner of No. 14 Metea Valley and No. 18 Oswego.

The No. 6 seed in the complex is Bolingbrook, who will play at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 15 against the winner of No. 11 Joliet West and No. 22 Waubonsie Valley.

The regional final is set for 7 p.m. Feb. 16.

The Plainfield East Regional opens with a play-in game between No. 15 Romeoville and No. 19 Plainfield Central.

That game will tip off at 7 p.m.

Monday, Feb. 13.

The winner of that game will play at 6 p.m. Feb. 14 against sectional No. 2 seed Oswego East.

The other semifinal game will feature a pair of area teams, as No. 7 Plainfield East and No. 10 Lockport.

“We have had a goal all year to win the school’s first girls basketball regional title,” said Plainfield East coach Tony Wa-

znonis. “When we saw the sectional postings we knew that would be tough, but anything worthwhile is not an easy path.

Being the 7 seed is not where we wanted to be, but we know no matter what seed we received, we would have to earn a regional title against a great team.”

The regional final is set for 7 p.m. Feb. 16.

In the Joliet Central Regional, the No. 20 Steelmen open play at 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 13 against No. 13 West Aurora with the winner playing No. 4 Yorkville, while No. 21 Plainfield South plays the 7:30 p.m. game against No. 12 Naperville North with No. 5 Naperville Central lying in wait.

“We ended up getting the 21 seed in our sectional which we expected due to our record,” said Plainfield South Lincoln DePaula coach. “Although our record does not show it, we have shown that we can be a tough out when we play consistently on the defensive end and take care of the basketball on offense. We have stressed to our players that anything can happen in the playoffs. Even though we haven’t had the season we wanted to have, our players are excited for a chance to prove themselves.”

The regional final will tip at 7 p.m. Feb. 16.

“We really don’t concern ourselves with our win/loss record, “ Binns said. “Every game we concentrate on playing as hard as we can. If we play hard, we will play well and win. My job is to control the inside and get on the glass.”

The third quarter was a personal shootout between the two future Big Ten foes, Akenten and Pickett.

Pickett won the scoring duel 1410 over Akenten in the third quarter but the Raiders opened up a 62-52 lead after three. Akenten began his onslaught on the glass with five rebounds, and added

two huge blocked shots, in the quarter.

In the fourth quarter Akenten outscored Pickett 9-8 and added seven more rebounds, for his 16 total in the game.

“As I have said before, I am so happy to be able to play with this team,” Akenten said. “We all work hard together and pick each other up. We have so many people who contribute to our success. We ran our offense very well tonight and that contributed to my big night.”

Another Raider sophomore, starting guard, Joseph Yesufu, had an outstanding all-around game against the Lancers, scoring seven points, handing out six assists and picking up four steals.

For Illinois’-best Class 4A school, a home Southwest Conference Blue date with the Stagg Chargers (14-7, 3-3), on Tuesday, February 7, is up next.

“Much better than Friday night,” Bolingbrook head coach Rob Brost said. “It took awhile to wear down a very good Belleville East team but we finally put them away in the fourth quarter. We played well, before a full-house here in O’Fallon. That is why we attend super-events like this, to prepare us for March.”

“Nana Akenten showed a lot of people why he is First Team All-State and will play his college basketball in the Big 10 at Nebraska. Malik Binns is in charge of our inside game and rebounding.

Malik did everything we asked of him tonight. I have been saying all year that I believe we have the best point guard in the state, in Kaleb Thornton. Tonight, he also showed why I think so highly of him.”

Debit, credit cards same thing to machines DEAR DAVE, I take classes online at a public university that is several hours from my home. I tried to pay for my classes the other day, and my Visa debit card was not accepted.

I got a message saying credit cards and cash were the only payment options. How can I take care of this without wasting an entire day driving to campus to pay with cash?

AMY DEAR AMY, Don’t worry, there’s no need for you to drive all the way to campus and back just to pay for your classes. You can run a debit card like it’s a credit card, and they will accept it.

The machines don’t recognize the difference, whether you type in a credit card number or a debit card number.

Just select “credit” when it asks for payment method. It’s just like when you step up to pay for something at the store and they ask the old credit or debit question. You say credit, so you don’t have to enter your PIN (personal identification number), and it all stays in the Visa system.

You’re just using it wrong, and that’s why you’re having trouble.

Just remember this in the future,

We’ve found a home we’re interested in, but it has a large utility tower on the property not far from the house. Should we still consider this home?

DENISE DEAR DENISE, The downsides are simple. One, you’ve got to look at the stupid thing every time you’re sitting on your patio. Two, when you get ready to sell it, everyone who looks at the house is going to have the same concerns you have. It’s not going to appreciate in value, and you’re going to have trouble selling it when the time comes.

If you’re willing to put up with those two things, you might get a steal of a deal on this place because no one else may want this house.

And when I say a steal, I’m talking around 40 percent off the appraisal. To me personally, it would be

enough of an eyesore that I probably wouldn’t buy. Again, that’s just a personal opinion.

Keep in mind that if you go through with this, when you get ready to sell it you’re going to lose out on any money you gained in the buy. Someone is going to do the same thing to you. I’m not completely killing the deal, but I definitely wouldn’t buy it to live in. As a rental? Maybe, if I were going to keep it forever. Because people will always rent. But honestly, I wouldn’t want to put up with the hassle in either scenario.
