All aboard: Romeoville Metra station opens Over 25 years in the planning and making, commuters line up for first new Metra stop since 2011

Rolling into town, stopping for the first time in Romeoville Monday, commuters were able to board the Metra on the Heritage Corridor Line’s newest stop at 135th street and New Avenue.

February 5 marked an end to a long haul to bring the station to life, making history for Romeoville and Metra. The Romeoville station is the first new stop on the Heritage Corridor since Metra’s creation in 1984 and the first new stop on any Chicagoland Metra line since 2011.

According to the village, Romeoville has been working towards their own Metra station since 1992. Excited about the opening, local officials greeted commuters with coffee and doughnuts while they waited for the first train to roll in at 5:54 a.m.

“This stop has been a goal of ours for a long time,” said Mayor John Noak. “We’re excited to finally see that goal achieved and believe it will be a tremendous asset for everyone who lives and works in this region.”

The new station at 899 E. Romeoville Road is on the Heritage Corridor Line that will run weekdays between Joliet and Chicago Union Station, a 58-minute trip to and from Romeoville.

The parking lot, accessible from 135th street, has 123 parking

spaces, 24 of which are reserved for permit parking and sold out the day they were released. The remainder of the spaces are open to daily parking for a $1 fee. A pay station that accepts both cash (exact change only) and credit cards is located at the station. Passport Parking will also offer riders the option of making daily fee payments online or through a mobile app. Visit m.ppprk.com to sign up or download Passport’s mobile app through the App Store or Google Play.

A One-Way Ticket to Chicago will cost $7.25, while a 10-Ride Ticket will cost $69 and a Monthly Pass will cost $210.25.

New schedules for the Heritage Corridor are available online and at Chicago Union Station.

“Two years after helping to add more service to Metra’s Heritage Corridor Line, I am proud to be part of the opening of this new station which will allow residents of Romeoville and the region to waste less time each day driving on congested roads,” said State Rep. Bill Lipinski. “As the senior member from Illinois on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Com-

mittee and a strong proponent of public transportation, I commend Mayor Noak and the Village Board for their tireless work on this important project which will improve the quality of life for area residents, provide a boost to the local economy, and help make the environment a better place for future generations.”

“I am happy to be here today to celebrate this tremendous achievement,” said Metra CEO/Executive Director Jim Derwinski. “At a time when funding for new stations and other capital needs is in short supply, it is all the more impressive that Romeoville was able to make this new station a reality. 1,000 years ago, Illinois had largest city in what would be U.S.

BY SUSAN SARKAUSKAS AND DIANE DUNGEY OF THE DAILY HERALD Centuries ago Illinois was home to the largest and most influential city in what would become the United States, rivaling the size of European cities at the time.

As many as 20,000 people — double that if surrounding communities are included — lived about 1,0000 years ago in the elaborate planned city that now lies within the Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site. Cahokia, east of St. Louis, includes woodhenges — large sun calendars that were built of red cedar posts — and at least 120 mounds and pyramids used to support important buildings and for burials.

Yet, Cahokia is only part of Illinois’ rich American Indian heritage.

Although 101,451 Illinoisans identify themselves as being fully or partly of American Indian descent, the tribes themselves are gone from Illinois, mostly moved west by the federal government in the 1800s, said Bill Iseminger, assistant manager of the Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site. What’s left are the remains of native cemeteries, villages, cities and mounds, onetime Indian routes that became the basis for many of our modern roads and highways and the names of many things, beginning with our state itself, named for a powerful American Indian group that once called Illinois home.

1,000 YEARS AGO, A CULTURAL CENTER Many different groups occupied Illinois in the centuries before Christopher Columbus set foot on North America.

Archaeologists estimate people came here about 12,000 years ago after migration from Asia over a land bridge began to populate the continent, according to the Illinois State Museum. Over thousands of years, people adapted to a changing climate and became less nomadic as the Ice Age came to a close.

Cahokia was built during the Mississippian Age, which began around 900 A.D. and lasted about 550 years. The city was the political and religious center of Mississippian life, but eventually its influence faded. It was largely abandoned by 1350 A.D., though no one knows precisely why.

Wood, game and other food sources might have been depleted, Iseminger said. There is evidence of long droughts and the climate was cooling.

Where did they go? Probably in many directions, joining other communities or establishing new ones, Iseminger said.

The Osage, Ponca, Omaha and Quapaw people are believed to be descended from the city’s builders.

About 700 years ago, as Cahokia was fading, a people called the Oneota emerged in the Illinois River valley. Excavations in Fulton County show half of those buried in an Oneota cemetery died as a result of violence, though it’s not known why, according to the Illinois State Museum.

Were the two cultures at war? It’s hard to say, though there’s evidence of Oneota culture in the Cahokia area. And Cahokia had a large palisade enclosure, indicating a need for defense, Iseminger said.

“The Oneota, as they migrated south, may have been the final blow of the Mississippian culture,” he said.

STARVED ROCK TO BLACK HAWK By the time French traders and priests arrived in the 1600s, there were two main American Indian groups in the area: the Illiniwek, or Illinois, and the Miami. In the late 1700s and early 1800s, the Illiniwek territory shrank, the Miamis moved eastward, and other tribes moved in.

As Europeans and other outsiders arrived, the Indians traded with them. They allied with the French and the British, at different times. American Indian federations and tribes fought each other, with the Iroquois being notorious for battles against the Illiniwek.

Starved Rock State Park near Utica is named for a stone formation where, legend has it, members of the Illiniwek starved to death in 1769 during a siege by the Ottawa and Potawatomi, who sought to avenge the killing of the Ottawa chief, Pontiac.

By 1818, a War Department study estimated there were at least 10,860 native people living in this area, not counting the Peoria band of Miami Indians. Tribes had already ceded a strip of land at the mouth of the Chicago River to the U.S. government, as well as land near Kaskaskia.

In 1821, the tribes gave up more of northern Illinois.

In 1832, some members of the Sac and Fox nations agreed with a chief named Black Hawk that their land had been illegally taken from them. They tried moving back into northwestern Illinois and western Wisconsin, leading to the unsuccessful Black Hawk War. The 1833 Treaty of Chicago took care of the largest swath. In exchange for handing over 5 million acres, tribes including the Potawatomi, Ojibwe, Odawa, Sac and Fox agreed to move west of the Mississippi River, according to an 1918 article about the treaty in the Wisconsin Magazine of History. Many would eventually be pushed farther, which is why the Peoria Tribe of Miami Indians is now headquartered in Oklahoma.

TRIBAL HERITAGE When the French and other Europeans arrived, they learned the tribes’ languages and began naming places and landmarks using the natives’ words. French or English versions of the names stuck.

The settlers also might have been influenced by the Romantic movement of the late 1700s and early 1800s, which placed a high value on nature and folk legends, so the names might have been meant to memorialize the dwindling numbers of natives and their cultures.

Poet Walt Whitman extolled the practice, in “An American Primer:” “All aboriginal names sound good. I was asking for something savage and luxuriant, and behold, here are the aboriginal names. I see how they are being preserved. They are honest words, — they give the true length, breadth, depth.

They all fit. Mississippi! — the word winds with chutes — it rolls a stream three thousand miles long. Ohio, Connecticut, Ottawa, Monongahela, all fit.”

There are six counties in Illinois that have Indian-themed names, at least 60 towns, and scores of schools and other places, from Aptakisic Road in Lake County to the town of Wetaug in Union County.

Many other roads now have more prosaic names but trace the paths American Indians once used, from the east-west U.S. Route 6, which generally follows the onetime Sauk Trail, to the North Shore’s Green Bay Road, thought to have been a Potawatomi trail.

‘HOME’ Romeoville grad Abby Smith plays one of her final college games just miles from where her career began

Late in her freshman season at McKendree University, Romeoville graduate Abby Smith suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in her knee that forced her into rehab the entire 2014 offseason.

That rehab paid off and Smith made it back for the beginning of her sophomore season and was off to a good start. On December 14, 2014, she scored a career-high 12 points at AlaskaAnchorage.

A game later at Maryville University, Smith tallied six points – in what would be the last game she would play for nearly a year, as she tore the same ACL for a second time.

Both times Smith injured her knee, the Bearcats were within a week of a trip back to Romeoville to play close to home at Lewis University.

After being granted a red-shirt season as a true sophomore, Smith returned from her second knee injury November 14. 2015 – less than 11 months later - to play in 15 games for McKendree.

None of those 15 were back in Romeoville.

Smith did make the trip to Lewis a season ago and was on the floor for eight minutes, but did not attempt a shot against

the Flyers.

When the schedule came out this season, Smith noticed that this season – her final year as a collegiate basketball player – she again had the chance to take the floor just minutes from where it all got started.

That game took placed Feb. 3 where Smith registered seven points and five rebounds.

“It is amazing,” Smith said about playing at Lewis. “When I saw that we got to come back to Lewis this year, it was a blessing.

I posted on social media that it was the last time I got to play at home. I went to Romeoville, Lewis is five minutes away from Romeoville (High School) and that was awesome.

“A lot of my old teammates are all around the country, but a lot of their parents were here, so it was really cool to see some familiar faces in the stands. It makes it worth it coming back from that second ACL to be able to come back to Lewis and see all the family and friends. I am glad I made the decision to keep going.”

That decision to stay with the game was not an easy one after two severe knee injuries in such a short span.

Flyers defeat USC in marathon A marathon first set victory led the No. 8 Lewis University men’s volleyball team to a 3-0 (42-40, 25-17, 25-16) win over No. 13 Southern California Friday (Feb. 2) in a nonconference match at Neil Carey Arena.

The win is the sixth straight for the Flyers, who move to 6-3 on the year, while the Trojans fall to 3-6.

In the epic first set, which is the third most points in a set in the rally scoring era for the Flyers, the two teams were tied at nine when Lewis went on a fivepoint run, highlighted by three aces from Ryan Coenen (Franklin, WI/Franklin).

USC battled back to take a 2019 lead before Lewis came back to take a 24-21 lead on a kill by Mitch Perinar (Channahon, IL/ Minooka).

“After my second one, I looked at my mom and said, ‘I don’t know if I can do this again.’ She told me, yes, I can and not to take the easy way and she was definitely right and I am glad I did it.”

This season, as one of only two seniors on the McKendree roster – and the lone fifth-year senior – Smith has a new role as a team leader despite coming off the bench for the Bearcats.

“It is different than high school because we were a young team and then we were the old team,” Smith said. “Having a young team is cool because they come up to me with questions and just being that leader again – there are no words to describe it. It is amazing.”

As her season winds down with McKendree 9-10 on the season, Smith is hoping for a strong ending to a five-year stint wearing the purple and gold.

“I can’t believe it has been five years. I got the extra year, which was a blessing. Hopefully we fin-

Lewis scored the final two points of the set on a kill by Coenen and a USC attack error.

The momentum from the first set win carried over the rest of the match for the Flyers.

In the second set, Lewis took control via a 10-3 run midway through the second set to open up a 19-10 lead. The run was highlighted by three kills from Coenen.

It was a 5-5 game in the third set when Lewis went on a 6-1 spurt to take an 11-6 lead, culminating with a block from Matt Yoshimoto (Ventura, CA/Adolfo Camarillo), Coenen and TJ Murray (Barrington, IL/Barrington).

Lewis maintained its fivepoint lead until it finished the game on a 6-2 run.

Coenen led the Flyers with 20 kills, totaling a .621 hitting percentage (20 kills, 2 errors, 29 attacks). He also had six digs and three aces. Perinar added 10 kills with a .556 hitting percentage (10-0-18), while Tyler Mitchem (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook) had nine kills and a .727 hitting percentage (9-1-11).

come to your game,’ and I said I wished he could too,” Smith said. “Then to see him in the stands was awesome. I don’t get to see him that often being away because when he does come home, he can see the rest of family.

“Seeing him here today, I almost teared up on the bench, but I had to collect myself. But, that’s what makes it all worth it.”

‘No cash’ businesses losing DEAR DAVE, What is your opinion of businesses that no longer accept cash?

HEATH DEAR HEATH, Honestly, I think the whole scenario is kind of silly. Businesses that are suddenly into the “no cash” thing lose out on a lot of transactions. Believe it or not, there are still tons of people out there who make purchases only with cash. So, from a business owner’s perspective this philosophy can cut into your market share.

I really don’t spend a lot of time thinking or worrying about the situation, though. When it comes right down to it, most businesses are doing that kind of thing for one or two reasons. Some of them just think cash is old school, and they want to give the impression they’re cutting edge and into technology.

Others do it — depending upon the space they’re in — because their sales using plastic are higher than with cash.

I’m a cash guy. There are some situations where I might walk away if someone wouldn’t accept hard, cold cash, but in most cases I don’t think anything about it. I’ll just use my debit card, and buy what I need.

—DAVE DEAR DAVE, At what point can you spend, and have a little fun, when you’re following the Baby Steps plan?

JEN DEAR JEN, Everyone likes having fun, and there’s nothing wrong with spending some cash if you can afford it. I just want people to make sure they have their finances in order first.

I recommend completing the first three Baby Steps before you run out and buy a bunch of toys.

Just to review, Baby Step 1 is saving $1,000 for a starter emergency

fund. Baby Step 2 is where you pay off all debt — except for your home — using the debt snowball method.

In Baby Step 3, you go back and fully fund your emergency fund with enough cash to cover three to six months of expenses.

Completing the first three Baby Steps puts you on pretty solid fi-

nancial ground. At this point, once you’ve saved up the cash, it’s okay to take a vacation or buy a reasonably-priced toy. But don’t have so much fun that you forget about the other Baby Steps. Baby Step 4 means putting 15 percent of your income into pre-tax retirement plans, like mutual funds and Roth IRAs. Don’t neglect saving for college if you have kids. That’s Baby Step 5. Baby Steps 6 and 7 are paying off the house early, and building wealth and giving like never before.

Remember, there are only three things you can do with money — spend, save, and give. You can do all three without putting yourself in a bind by following my plan!
