Will County refines long-range transportation goals

It’s no secret most motorists would like to see an end to traffic but how to get there is a process years in the making.

In its desire to create a transportation system that is healthy and viable over time, the Will County Division of Transportation is looking to update its 2030 plan to a new 2040 long-range transportation plan and is seeking county-wide input.

A series of open house meetings were held throughout Will County

including an open house Jan. 27 at the Romeoville Village Hall.

Community input is essential in building a constrained plan that can be then used once a budget is

established, explained Christina Kupkowski, PE, Phase I, project manager.

The transportation department laid out several scenarios for a longterm transportation plan, essentially using one phase as a building block to the next scenario.

The fundamental element running through each scenario is the widening of both Interstate 55 and Interstate 80 to eight lanes.

Moving on to the second scenario involves seeking the input of all agencies involved including the Illinois Department of Transportation, Pace, Metra, RTA and local agencies to create a list of priorities.

The crux of building the plan is coming up with the scenario that will not only be beneficial but realistic over the next 25 years and within the constraints of budget.

For instance Scenario 2 has both a plan A and B; one that includes the Illiana Expressway and one that does not.

In addition to the widening of the interstates, several transportation projects including the Houbolt Road bridge, several new service commuter lines on Pace and Metra,

and the widening of Laraway Road and Route 30, among others, are incorporated.

Scenario 3 basically comes down to a wish list if all projects could be completed.

“We are just trying to be good stewards of tax payers dollars which we endeavor to do every day,” said Kupkowski. “This plan gives us a way to look at prioritizing projects.”

Those in attendance were given stickers to place on a chart to identify where they would like their money spent, from road expansion and street completion to bike paths and commuter rails.

At the Romeoville open house, attendees indicated they would rather their dollars fund road expansion and bridge completion.

“We want everyone’s input and to be involved,” said Kupkowski.

“You’re the ones that live here, works here and will make the most out of what happens in the next 25 years.”

Individuals can still take the online survey until April at WillConnects2040.org. Once all results are in, an advisory committee will craft a plan and bring it back to the public mid-summer.

It’s all about love – love for a school that has graduated thousands, the love of giving back and the love of a little competition.

The University of St. Francis celebrated its 59th Annual Caritas Scholarship Ball Jan. 23 at the Bolingbrook Golf Club.

Regina Block, major gifts officer of the USF, explains ‘Caritas’ is the Latin word for love and is the driving force behind one of the

longest-standing black-tie charity events in the Will County area that has raised nearly $4 million throughout that time.

The event was started 59 years ago by a few businessmen as a holiday party to raise money for their school and the Sisters that taught them. Each year the party grew and with it the annual prizes for auction grew more memorable with alumni vying to bring in the most funds.

From $900 bottles of Scotch and a day on the set of the TV sitcom Modern Family to last year’s audience with the Pope, alumni were out to win bragging rights while fostering the continued love of their school, said Block.

Through the years the event has been held throughout Will County including places like the Rialto Theatre and Lewis University.

This was the first year it was held at the Bolingbrook Golf Club, drawing nearly 400 people and was chaired by Terry and Sue D’Arcy of Shorewood.

The love of sports often doesn’t die when cut from a team and opportunity shouldn’t either.

That was the thought process when Heart Haven Outreach (H2O) and DuPage Township teamed up with the Bolingbrook/Romeoville Character Counts Coalition and created a month- long basketball program to give all teenagers in Bolingbrook and Romeoville the opportunity to participate in an organized sport.

Executive Director of H2O, Ryan Lawrence explained that there were too many students being cut at their school’s basketball tryouts because of lack of space on the team. In addition many students were

Bolingbrook Black History Awareness Club promotes diversity, heritage Group to hold 18th annual celebration Feb. 13 at Bolingbrook High School

With a mission to spread the awareness and education of black history in the community, Bolingbrook’ s Black History Awareness Club is set to make a difference.

The group is hosting the 18th Annual Community-Wide Black History Month Celebration from 2 to 5 p.m. Feb. 13 at Bolingbrook High School. The free event is open

to the public with entertainment, children activities and food/drink.

The annual event was born as a way to promote diversity and heighten understanding of Black heritage through an entertaining format.

In 2000, Bolingbrook attorney Anita Kontoh Scott, Felix George, DuPage Township Trustee and Bernard Winston founded the Black History Month Awareness Club.

The club works year-round to organize their one signature

event that has now grown to draw hundreds from throughout the Will County area.

The event is held annually during Black History Month, and is geared to all residents regardless of race and origin to assist in building bridges of tolerance and understanding. The event is sponsored by the Village of Bolingbrook, the Bolingbrook Arts Council and the Fountaindale Public Library.

Organizer Janice Haywood explains Black History Month recognizes and promotes the appreciation of centuries of African-American achievement, culture and heritage while reflecting on the struggles, sacrifices and

accomplishments of the many Blacks in this country.

“We have proudly reached the local communities for 18 years,” said Haywood. “We are excited to continue the Power of a Dream for the African American Community. This event connects the community with organizations and businesses by providing information that will increase awareness and understanding of African American Heritage.”

Some of the past entertainers have included The Jesse White Tumblers, The Magic of Spellbinder and the Montu Dance Company.

Company and a keynote panel consisting of Lt. Keith Cross of Aurora Police Department and the President of NOBLE (National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives); Vincent F. BHS ‘fashionistas’ give back to community Project will provide hand-made hats, scarves, blankets for local hospitals Bolingbrook High School fashion II students are nearing the completion of a class community service project that will provide hand-made hats, scarves, blankets and animal pillows for local hospitals, nursing homes and underprivileged youngsters.

“A lot of students have never given back,” said BHS family and consumer science teacher Marla Putnam, who for several years has conducted service learning projects in her classes.

Six years ago, a committee of adults from around the community put together an affordable monthlong program of organized basketball, for $5 per teen.

“Instead of doing one big service learning project, they decided to break into groups and do three,” Putnam said. “They did a little bit of research on possible organizations they could help with sewing-related service projects that would be related to the curriculum.”

“They’ve been great. I want to help and they tell me we got it,” Putnam said. “Sewing is a skill people need. This is something they can do the rest of their life. They will be able to take that skill and help other people.”

In previous years Putnam’s Adult Living class students created no-sew blankets for hospice and conducting an anti-bullying project that evolved into OVSS (One Voice Strengthening Society” which is now BHS’ anti-bullying club.

“During this month, the students get to play basketball, form relationships with positive adult role models, and are taught about the importance of positive character within sports. With a school district of more than 4,000 high school students, opportunities like this are much needed for teenagers,” said Lawrence.

The group is actively looking for coaches for this year’s program, which is set to begin this month.

Every year, H20 tries to recruit and train at least 20 coaches from around the community to work with each of the teams on basketball skills as well as teach sportsmanship through the Character Counts Pursuing Victory with Honor program. Practices are

held over the month of February at local church gyms, park district space and community centers.

The committee is looking for men and women coaches for men and women teams that can commit to at least three practices working with their teams running drills, sharpening skills and also building character on the court. H2O and DuPage Township will provide equipment and information for how to run practices.

The committee is also seeking either monetary or product donations from local businesses and community members to help offset the cost of the program. A tax ID letter is available upon request and receipt of your donation.

Later this month, the Polar Plunge season benefiting Special Olympics will kick off with the annual Super Plunge Feb. 19.

This is a time where we raise awareness on how Special Olympics transforms lives for those of us Special Olympics athletes, and it’s a time to raise funds for Special Olympics. This is the time where individuals in 19 communities across Illinois will be “freezin’ for a reason.” Those who will be taking part in the Polar Plunge will be educating our communities about Special Olympics, as they change the game for a more accepting and inclusive community.

Take, for example, a few years ago, when I had the opportunity to attend a Super Plunge event. I was there as a podcaster, giving listeners a soundseeing experience through audio of what a Polar Plunge is about.

While attending the Super Plunge I got the chance to meet a few of the brave people who, despite the frigid temperatures, took that plunge into Lake Michigan.

English had chosen to participate in the Super Plunge for a personal reason.

His son, Cole, has Down syndrome and is involved as an athlete in Special Olympics.

“This is just a wonderful program that my wife and I have been a part of for the last 10 years,” English said.

“This is just a great event that brings crazy people together.”

During the Super Plunge, there is a huge white tent on the North Beach, located on the campus of Northwestern University in Evanston. It is in this tent where the super plungers go and get warmed up before each plunge.

Every hour, once an hour, for 24 hours, Super Plungers, like English, leave the warmth of the tent and walk or run like a herd of cows into the freezing Lake Michigan waters.

Like many who are taking that plunge into the frigid cold water, they do this to raise money and awareness for Special Olympics. As the super plungers learn about Special Olympics, they learn increasingly about the challenges and joys that those of us with special needs experience in daily life. Those participating in the Polar Plunge are beginning to change the world. They are spreading knowledge about the importance of accepting and including those of us with special needs.

I hope that you will learn more about the Polar Plunge, perhaps support someone taking the plunge or take the plunge yourself. Once you do, you will begin to change your community to be a more accepting and inclusive place for everyone. Join me, let’s change the game and get involved with the Polar Plunge.

Manley encourages area women to attend Women’s Legislative Advisory Committee Committee meetings to take place Saturday, Feb. 6 from 9 to 11 a.m.

Committed to finding solutions to local issues by including area residents in the discussion, state Rep. Natalie Manley, D-Joliet, is hosting her Women’s Legislative Advisory Committee on Saturday, Feb. 6 from 9 to 11 a.m. at her district office located at 2701 Black Road, Suite 201 in Joliet.

WIN RIVALRY Bolingbrook claims this year’s version of battle of Valley View

Many high school sports rivalries start the same place as Bolingbrook and Romeoville – as a pair of neighboring towns.

What separates the two from a lot of others is the fact that the two schools share a school district, but are in opposing athletic conferences.

Because of that, the game between the two happens only once and year and usually brings out the communities to support their teams.

That was the case last week when the two Valley View School District schools battled at Romeoville, with the visiting Raiders winning 54-50 in one of the better rivalry games in years past.

“Bolingbrook is a very good team,” said Romeoville coach Marc Howard. “They have earned everything they got. Coach (Rob)

Brost and the staff do a very good job over there. We just want to showcase that little brother is not as little and as small as it used to be. We are taking some strides in the right direction and that we are going to compete and battle and make this rivalry game a tough, competitive game.”

Brost was pleased with the win in front of the loud Spartan crowd.

“I am proud of how we came into a tough place to play and won on the road in the battle of Valley View.

Everybody builds this up and I am really proud of our guys. Our bench had a lot of energy tonight, even the guys that didn’t play, so I am proud of all of our guys,” he said.

“Obviously, there is a difference in philosophy in the two programs, but we have guys that have been together and have played together for a long time and that makes it a lot more fun.” photo By mark gregory

O’FALLON – Bolingbrook’s Steve Stropkovic was on a mission this year.

After coming up short of the state finals last year, this year he made sure to make it.

Stropkovic did just that, finishing in 23rd place overall with a 2,681 12-game total Friday and Saturday at St. Clair Bowl.

“At one point I was in 16th or 17th, so I was in the top 20 of state,” Stropkovic said. “That was actually really good. I started off with a really high game, which I

needed to do to get All-State, but I fell short a little bit. I got a little tired and 12 games of bowling in two days is a little much for me.”

His Saturday was his best ever, a 1,368 and included an opening 278 game and a 737 morning series.

“I bowled a lot better than last year,” Stropkovic said. “Last year was bad. The difference was experience. I was much more experienced than I was last year.

For the most part I’m happy with how I bowled. I just went with whatever I could figure out when the lanes broke down and did alright.”

Stropkovic advanced to

Saturday as one of the top 30 individuals not on a top-12 qualifying team after shooting a 1,313 Friday.

“My whole goal this year was to make it to the second day and I got it,” Stropkovic said. “So I’m happy. The excitement wasn’t the same as last year, but I did a lot better. I just wanted to do the best I can.”

He was joined the whole weekend by Alex Acosta, who advanced to Saturday after a 1,305 Friday.

“I had a good first five games, but then I had a bad last game,

Spartans defeat Plainfield East in OT

In a game that would cause coaches some additional stress, Romeoville rallied to beat Plainfield East 69-63 in overtime in a frenzied, back-and-forth game.

“It was a battle of runs and who wants to control the ball,” Romeoville coach Julio Carrasco said. “We had 27 turnovers. They probably had similar. Last time we had 30 turnovers. We just can’t hold on to the ball against this team. Their defense is very good and they cause a lot of chaos.

“East has been our rival since our freshman year, so this was a really big win,” Romeoville senior Skye Osborne said. “We lost by two to them last time in overtime.” We just have to be able to control it.”

East built a 23-16 lead late in the first half, but the Spartans (12-11, 6-4) came back with a 10-0 run to take a 26-23 lead. The score was tied 26-26 at the half.

The Spartans took control in the third quarter with a 35-28 advantage, but the Bengals (14-10, 5-5) scored 14 straight points to take their own seven-point lead. It was a 46-42 lead after three.

In the fourth the Spartans got back in front 57-53, but the Bengals scored seven straight to go up 60-57 late in the game.

A Lexi Marin three-pointer on a pass from Osborne tied the game with a minute left.

From there East had two turnovers and the Spartans had one and a missed 35-footer at the buzzer, sending the game into overtime.

“Everyone contributed as a team and we all started coming together and working as a whole,” Osborne said. “That really got us

the win tonight. We got a lot of steals and I think we really pulled it together in the second half.

Pressuring them helped a lot.”

Marin opened the overtime with a three-pointer and Romeoville held the lead the rest of the game.

“We just never give up,” Marin said. “We just had to keep working.

It was only the beginning of the game. We had our chance to show what we had. Our defense got us back in the game and made up for the turnovers we had on offense.”

Osborne finished with 20 points, while Marin added 19, including 10 points in the fourth quarter and overtime.

“I was feeling pretty good at the end of the game,” Marin said. “I’m pretty good under pressure. We had a good rhythm and it made our shots easier.”

“That was the most I’ve ever scored, so yeah, that was good,” Osborne said. “I was feeling in the rhythm and the team was helping me out and keeping me energized. They all kept me confident. Working together as a team worked really well.”

The ball movement was a big reason for the success of the guards.

“They started hitting from the outside, which was nice,” Carrasco said. “We talked about having to be in the rhythm and the girls found their rhythm. When the ball was moving from side to side, they found their rhythm and knocked down some shots.”

I had to make a bunch of moves. It feels great being able to advance. I just wanted to have fun and do my best (Saturday).

“I enjoyed myself,” Acosta said. “I had a fun time with everyone. It helped having a teammate here.”

“This was a good atmosphere and everyone always to come out here and compete.”

Akenten led all scorers with 21 points, including a pair of threes and shooting 5-of-6 from the free throw line.

Akenten also dominated the boards late, helping the Raiders hold off a possible Romeoville comeback.

“We have been telling that elite players rebound the ball and that is what we expect him to be,” Brost said. “He is close now. That has been a part of his game that we have been stressing and tonight he came out and did just that. He has all the skills to be an elite player and he is moving in that direction, he is just refining some things. He is like most of our players, this is the first time around for him. We have to be patient, but he has to make corrections, which he is and I am proud of that.”

Romeoville was paced by 20 from senior Matt Cappelletti.

“Our guards struggled shooting,” Howard said. “I thought Cappelletti fought for his numbers and played pretty well.

We played hard, we battled and just couldn’t make those shots when we needed to.

I feel like this season there are a number of games where we had the opportunity to win the game we just make those young mistakes. That wasn’t the case in this game, we just didn’t make shots.”

Young Spartans looking forward to postseason

After the return of its former coach a year ago on an interim basis, the Romeoville wrestling program is under new leadership and demonstrating the hunger and desire to become a top-notch program.

“I am hoping I can light a fire and hope we can keep it burning for four-plus years for these guys because a lot of them are young and they want it,” said coach Robert Casey. “I am supplying the tools to get better, but they are buying what I’m selling and they really want it. This whole team, I am expecting great things in the future.”

Casey came to the Spartans after being an assistant at both Joliet Central and Joliet West.

“I was a little nervous and anxious at the same time coming in because I have coached for years, but had never been a head coach,” Casey said. “The first taste of reality was when we had the first practice. I am used to having 100 some kids come out and we had like 32 kids. I was

wondering where the rest of the team was. I realized I didn’t have the arsenal I did before, but it has been a blessing because I have more time to work with them individually and fine tune and tweak everything.”

After being around high school wrestling for a while, he understands the demands of the IHSA playoffs, which open for the Spartans Saturday at the Lockport Regional.

“I wish the whole team could go to sectionals, but I know we have a tough regional, so there are a few of them I am hoping can make it through,” Casey said. “Evan Sklodowski (145) and Andres Jara (170). Nick Torres is a freshman at 113 and when he brings it, he brings it, there is another freshman at 120 in Azeall Martinez. They all want it.”

Casey knows, however, that no matter how this season ends, the future looks bright for the Spartans.

“I am seeing huge things from this group,” he said. “I am hoping the junior highs give me more kids like them and we can restart the Romeoville tradition.”

You can also dip into your emergency fund a little bit, but for the next little while you need to make sure you’re living on a really tight, bare-bones budget.

The transformation is complete and the long-awaited Clubhouse at Mistwood Golf Club is now open.

After announcing that the project was completed, Mistwood invited the public visit the club and tour the new facility, including its great hall, meeting rooms and McWethy’s Tavern – a Scottish-inspired pub.

Ray Graham Association to benefit from auto show gala The Ray Graham Association is among 18 local charities that will benefit from more than $2.5 million expected to be raised during a blacktie gala that will be raised in conjunction with the 2016 Chicago Auto Show.

Now in its 25th year, First Look for Charity is scheduled for Feb. 12 – the evening before the auto show opens to the public. The event gives benefactors the chance to see hundreds of new vehicles on display amid an elegance not present when crowds converge on McCormick Place during the auto show’s nineday consumer run – Feb. 13-21.

First Look for Charity has become one of the special events on the winter schedules of Chicago socialites and car buffs. About 10,000 attendees at the charity gala will be treated to food, drinks and special entertainment presented by the automakers in their displays.

Complementing the culinary efforts of Savor, McCormick Place’s in-house caterer, are a host of notable Chicago restaurants, including Adobo Grill, Frontier, Joe’s Seafood Chicago, Miss Ricky’s and Real Urban Barbecue, among others. Spirits will be poured by Brown-Forman, Ménage à Trois Vodka, Sugar Island Rum, Tres Agaves Tequila and Trinchero Family Estates.

Those in attendance also have the chance to win a 2016 Lincoln Black Label MKX or a 2016 Jeep

Renegade. “The Chicago Auto Show is uniformly regarded as the finest auto show in the country, but the charitable cause demonstrates that this auto show is about more than just vehicles and accessories,” said Colin Wickstrom, chairman of the 2016 show. “It’s also about giving something to the charities of our community.”

The18organizationsparticipating in this year’s First Look for Charity predominantly are childrenoriented. Some operate on a global level, while others focus their efforts locally. This year’s beneficiaries are the 100 Club of Chicago, Advocate Health Care, Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago, Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago, Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Joliet, Clearbrook, The Cradle, Franciscan Community Benefit Services, Franciscan St. James Health, the Ray Graham Association, the Illinois Spina Bifida Association, JDRF, Lurie Children’s Hospital, March of Dimes, Misericordia, Special Olympics Illinois, Turning Pointe Autism Foundation and the Jesse White Tumbling Team.

Tickets to the event are $250 each and can be ordered at www. firstlookforcharity.org. Attendees can direct the proceeds of their purchase to any or all of the benefiting charities. Of each ticket, $203 is tax-deductible as a charitable expense.
