Fighting the flu Schools prepped in case of local outbreak with districts 365u and 202 proactive in prevention

The 2017-2018 flu season is on track to be the worst one yet, according to recent reports from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), noting that flu activity continues across the nation, with no end in sight for many weeks.

For the week ending Jan. 27, according to the CDC’s FluView, flu was reported as widespread in every state except Hawaii and

Oregon. Flu activity is considered “high” in 42 states, up from 39 in the previous week. In addition, there have been 53 pediatric deaths, up from 37 in the prior week.

“We have not hit our peak yet, unfortunately,” said Kristen Nordlund, a spokeswoman for the CDC. “It is not going down yet. Really, the bottom line is there is still likely many more weeks to go.”

Locally, parents of school aged children are being assured that school districts are keeping on top of the trends, and keeping a

watchful eye on students.

At the Valley View School District, the absentee rate for January 2018 is at 8.17 percent, up from 6.83 percent last year.

“This is not anything that caused concern at this point, but it is something that we do watch very closely, said Jim Blaney, director of communications for Valley View.

Plainfield Community School District 202 agreed.

“We are not seeing anything unusual,” said Plainfield Community School District 202 Direc-

tor of Community Relations Tom Hernandez when asked about any outbreaks in the district. “We’re keeping very careful track.”

On Friday, Feb. 2, the CDC gave an update of this year’s flu season.

Just four weeks into the official flu season, and the 2017-2018 season has surpassed hospitalizations for the same time period in 2014-2015, the year with the overall highest rate of hospitalizations for the flu.

“This season is turning out to be a particularly challenging one,” said Dan Jernigan, M.D., M.P.H., CAPT, USPHS, Director, Influenza Division, National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases. “It has been compounded by lots of flu occurring nationwide simultaneously over several weeks. This is an unusual pattern for flu in the U.S.” The CDC works with 2,800 doctors’ offices and emergency departments to gather hard data on

flu cases.

“When you look at flu activity at the state level, this week, the number of states experiencing high influenza-like illness activity increased from 39 to 42,” Jernigan said. “In general, for doctors’ offices urgent care clinics and emergency departments, the western part of the country is beginning to see lower flu activity; the eastern part of the country is seeing somewhat higher activity. And southern states are continuing to see high activity at the same levels. Influenza-like illness has been elevated for 10 consecutive weeks so far this season.”

Jernigan said the average duration of the flu season over the past several years has been 16 weeks, although the season generally lasts from 11 to 20 weeks.

The CDC reminds everyone that hand washing and staying home while sick is paramount to fighting the spread of the disease.

Valley View did issue a notice to parents and caregivers that the flu is making its rounds through its schools, reminding everyone that the best ways to limit the spread of colds and influenza is to practice good hygiene, asking them to remind children to do the following: cover their mouth when they cough, wash their hands frequently; avoid touching their eyes, nose, and mouth; eat and drink properly; and to get the proper amount of rest.

“We give our buildings a thorough cleaning every night, which is something we always do no matter what time of the year it is,” said Blaney. “We also remind students about best hygiene practices and seek to keep those in place at all times, not just during the cold and flu season.”

Hernandez said the school district sent out a mass communication blast to parents earlier this winter with information from the Will County Health Department and the CDC. “When you’ve got 27,000 students, with 17,000 little ones, you need to keep your kiddos safe,” Hernandez said.

In the Chicagoland area, three districts have been affected by overwhelming reports of the flu.

The Komarek School District in North Riverside, the British International School in Chicago, and the Illinois Math and Science Academy in Aurora all had to shutter their buildings to disinfect in January.

Schools to create collaborative centers District redesigning high school libraries for 21st century needs

As technology and the way students use resources continually change, the Valley View School District is looking to carry its high school libraries into the 21st century.

The district says it has recognized the need to provide settings that both support and encourage contemporary approaches to education and are designing student collaborative centers at both

Bolingbrook and Romeoville high schools.

Assistant Superintendent for Administrative Services Gary Grizaffi said the district has spent considerable time reviewing recommendations with school administration and librarians in an effort to anticipate their needs for a new space.

Rather than the stacked volumes and tables and chairs seen of the current library, the collaborative centers would allow for a more modern, exploratory type-space for small group meetings and ac-

cess to technology in a variety of areas.

According to district information the philosophy for the new center is based on the fact that “though printed books still play a critical role in supporting learners, digitized technologies offer additional pathways to learning and acquiring information.

Students and teachers no longer need a library simply for access. Instead, they require a place that encourages participatory learning and allows for cooperative research from a variety of sources. In other words, instead of being an archive, libraries are becoming learning centers.”

Director of Facility Operations Michael Lopez said the center would include furniture that has the flexibility to be reconfigured in different ways from supporting as many as 50 students to small gatherings of students. The idea is to be able to provide many small collaborative meeting areas for students to create projects and work collectively associated with technology.

Currently the plan is to have bookshelves positioned around the perimeter of the space, separated by book type and to incorporate curved bookshelves at a lower height. It is anticipated that these modifications are meant to encourage collaboration and sharing

that the previous spaces may have discouraged.

“Rather than focusing on the role that their library had played in the past, the newly designed spaces embody what students need now and what the schools could envision for the future,” said Lopez in a report to the district.

The district intends to further finalize plans and cost, bringing a final review of the concept to the board at a future meeting. Construction is anticipated to begin in summer 2018 and be ready for the 2018-2019 school year. Funding for the project has been included in the Operations and Maintenance budget.

White Oak puts referendum on ballot Library district seeking to increase hours of operation, create digital lab

In an effort to increase services and hours of operation, the White Oak Library District will be pursuing a referendum in the upcoming spring election.

The district explains, for a cost of approximately $1.40 more in

taxes per month for the average homeowner, patrons would gain access to the library both earlier in the day and later in the evening as well as the convenience of a digital lab.

Officially, the library district is asking voters to raise the limiting rate to $0.218 (21.8 cents) per $100 of assessed value. On the March 20 election ballot, voters will see

the following question, “Shall the limiting rate under the Property Tax Extension Limitation Law for the White Oak Library District, Will County, Illinois be increased by an additional amount equal to 0.0306 percent above the limiting rate for levy year 2016 and be equal to 0.218 percent of the equalized assessed value of the taxable property therein for levy year 2018.”

A yes vote would mean you are in favor of the move and no means you are opposed to the referendum.

The move, according to information from the district, would allow the library district to answer patrons’ call for additional hours, opening earlier on weekdays and adding hours on the weekends.

The library would be open Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m; Friday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m. Additional resources would also afford the district to create a digital media lab where patrons can transfer VHS to DVD, restore family photos, create cut-

ting edge promotional materials, record audio podcasts, film captivating videos, compose music, and other projects using various technologies.

The district, with branches in Crest Hill, Lockport and Romeoville, serves close to 80,000 residents. With nearly 25 percent of its patrons being senior citizens, the district also would like to expand its outreach services to meet the growing demand, offering lobby stops, home deliveries and new memory kits.

Illinois has embraced its role as the Land of Lincoln

BY KATE SCHOTT THE STATE JOURNALREGISTER Abraham Lincoln may not have been born in Illinois but he clearly is among the state’s favorite sons.

Lincoln came into the world on Feb. 12, 1809, in Hodgenville, Kentucky, but eventually spent several decades living in Illinois, and departed for the presidency as a resident of Springfield. He was a shopkeeper, postmaster, lawyer, and state and federal legislator before being elected president in 1860.

He served as the nation’s 16th president from March 1861 until his assassination in April 1865. The bullet fired by John Wilkes Booth prematurely took one of the nation’s greatest presidents from its citizens, but could not diminish his accomplishments -- notably the abolishment of slavery -- that have defined his legacy.

Planting roots in Illinois Lincoln had a humble beginning.

The second child and first son to Thomas Lincoln and Nancy Hanks, he was born in a one-room log cabin. He did not have the benefit of consistent formal schooling, as he often worked to help support his family during his childhood in Kentucky and then Indiana.

The family moved to Illinois in 1830 and Lincoln wound up in New Salem working as postmaster and shopkeeper. He became involved in local politics, winning a seat in the state legislature in 1834. He taught himself law and passed the bar in 1836; in 1846 he won a seat to the U.S. House of Representatives.

He married Mary Todd in November 1842 and they had four sons, although only the eldest, Robert Todd, survived into adulthood. The Greek Revival house the family lived in for 17 years still sits in Springfield today, with its homestead a popular place for tourists to visit when they come to the state’s capital.

Lincoln’s biggest accomplishment was probably the abolishment of slavery, an issue he began speaking out against as a young adult. His first state-

ment on the issue is said to have been March 3, 1837, when he said “the institution of slavery is founded on both injustice and bad policy” during a speech at the state legislature when it was in Vandalia.

It was an issue he would repeatedly discuss during his political career: When accepting the Republican nomination in June 1858 during a convention in Springfield to be the party’s candidate for U.S. Senate, Lincoln gave his “A house divided against itself cannot stand” speech.

And it was one of the main issues discussed during his failed bid for the Senate, as during the 1858 debates with Stephen A. Douglas the future president forcely spoke out against slavery. While he lost the race for Senate that year, those seven debates gave him the national prominence he needed to win the presidency.

The presidency Lincoln was elected the 16th president of the United States in November 1860 and took office the following March. Much of Lincoln’s time as president was spent on the issue of slavery, as the divide between the North and South as to whether it should be allowed led to the Civil War starting a month after he took office.

It was during the war that his Emancipation Proclamation, which freed slaves in Confederate states, went into effect on Jan. 1, 1863. And it was on one of the bloodiest battlefields of the Civil War that Lincoln delivered perhaps the most important speech in American history. The Gettysburg Address, given Nov. 19, 1863, is known for Lincoln’s succinct summary of the purpose of the United States: That the country was “conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal,” and that “government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”

Lincoln was elected to a second term as the war raged on, but his death came shortly after his second inauguration and just as the Civil War was coming to end. He was shot April 14, 1865, while watching “Our American Cousin” at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C. It was Good Friday, just five days after

the surrender of General Robert E. Lee and the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. Booth, a sympathizer with the Confederacy, shot the president pointblank in the back of his head.

News of Lincoln’s death arrived in Springfield via telegraph at 3 a.m. April 15, 1865, to the Daily State Journal’s newsroom. “The president was shot in a theater tonight and is probably mortally wounded,” read the dispatch.

Moments later another followed: “The president is not expected to live through the night. ... Secretary (of State William) Seward was also assassinated.

No arteries were cut. Particulars soon.”

The second, of course, was inaccurate about Seward’s fate, but the news about Lincoln was correct. Additional dispatches painted the chaos inside Ford’s Theater, including the sound of a pistol, a man waving a dagger leaping from the president’s box, the screams of Mrs. Lincoln, and finally, the heartbreaking confirmation that the 16th president of the United States had died.

A train carried the president’s body throughout the country for nearly two weeks, allowing citizens to grieve their loss. On May 3, crowds descended upon Springfield as the train carrying Lincoln pulled into town for the president’s burial.

“Today we lay him reverently to rest amid the scenes he loved so well,” the Journal said the next day. “Millions will drop a tear to his memory, and future generations will make a pilgrimage to his tomb. Peace to his ashes.”

Pilgrimages continue to the 16th president’s tomb to this day, with many visitors rubbing the nose of the bronze head of Lincoln that sits in front of the entrance to the tomb. The words uttered by Secretary of War Edwin Stanton upon Lincoln’s passing have indeed come true: “Now he belongs to the ages.”

It is said all around any sport that defense wins championships.

However cliché one feels that may be - the Bolingbrook girls basketball team is out to prove that to be true.

The Raiders (22-4) won the first of four possible ISHA trophies last week, when it won its own regional with a 65-24 win over Plainfield North.

Bolingbrook held the young Tigers to just eight points in the first half – bit only one field goal.

“I can’t be mad about that,” Bolingbrook coach Chris Smith said. “We want to set the tempo with our defense and create some chances for easy baskets and I think we did a good job of that.”

Smith wasn’t happy with the 67-40 win in the regional semifinal win over Waubonsie Valley.

“We talked about trying to make our mark on the defensive

side of the ball. We felt like we gave up 4 0 points and we felt like we didn’t do a good job on the defensive end,” he said. “So, we felt the need to really come out and establish ourselves on the defensive end and I think we did a good job of that.”

The win was the 16th straight regional title for the Raider program, but since Smith has taken over the reins, that is as far as they have got.

And while the regional title is a step in the right direction – Bolingbrook wants to start taking the program deeper as it did when it made seven straight trips downstate from 2004-10.

“This group wants to go out with something the last four groups of seniors haven’t done and that is to get a sectional and supersectional plaque,” Smith said. “We haven’t been past sectional since I have been here and this group is looking to get it done.

Of all the teams Smith has had, he said this is a group that can take that next step, if not beyond.

“If this team – with the talent they have – if they put their minds to it and stay focused, we have a chance,” he said. “A lot of it is the senior group of girls. They have really put forth the effort and they really take this season serious. This was an opportunity to win a regional championship in their last home game and they took that to heart. They made sure that the girls stayed focused and that we completed the task at hand.”

“It is motivation. Every time we see the state trophies, we want that to be us. I think that is what pushes us the most,” said senior Jahari Smith. “We not only want to go to state, we want to win state.”

Bolingbrook was able to win the regional title in front of Tuck, who was in the stands for the game.

Jahari Smith paced the Raiders with 11 points, while Jayden Marable added in 10 points.

Trost becomes Flyers’ all-time wins leader The Lewis Flyers men’s basketball team moved over the .500 mark for the first time this season with a 64-44 win at Missouri S&T on Saturday afternoon in Rolla, Mo. With the victory, Scott Trost posted his 221st win at Lewis surpassing Gordie Gillespie for the most in school history.

The Flyers (14-13, 9-8 GLVC) scored the first six points of the game but the Miners (2-22, 0-14 GLVC) answered back with a 12-3 run to take its lone lead of the game on a jumper by Allante Pickens with 12:09 to play in the opening half.

Nick Norton (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) answered with a three on the ensuing possession to even the score and sparked a 10-0 run to give Lewis the lead it wouldn’t relinquish.

S&T got to within four late in the half after a pair of free throws by Chris Harris but the Flyers went to the locker room with a six-point cushion when Donovan Oliver (Kewanee, Ill./ Kewanee) tipped in a shot off the inbounds pass just before the buzzer.

Lewis shot 44 percent (15for-34) from the field in the first half but struggled from three making only 6-of-18 attempts.

The Flyers didn’t attempt a free throw in the first 20 minutes.

The Miners were held to just 32 percent shooting (8-for-25) in the half but hung around making 11-of-14 attempts at the foul line.

S&T scored the first points of the second half on a jumper from Romain Louiserre but Lewis responded with a 14-0 run over the next four minutes to build an 18-point lead and wouldn’t allow the Miners to get closer than 14 points the rest of the way.

The 44 points scored by S&T was a season low for them and the second fewest allowed by the Flyers this season.

Oliver led three players in double figures with 13 points while Cristen Wilson (Cleveland, Ohio/John Hay) added

12 and Delaney Blaylock (Wyoming, Mich./Godwin Heights) finished with 10.

Lewis ended the game shooting 44 percent (25-for-57) from the field, went 10-for-27 from beyond the arc and was 4-of-8 at the foul line.

The Flyers defense held the Miners to just 27.5 percent shooting (14-for-51) and held them to only 14 points in the second half. Harris and Ervin Sarajlic led S&T with 10 points each.

Lewis concludes its regular season next Saturday hosting Southern Indiana in a 3 p.m. contest at Neil Carey Arena.

The Flyers will honor their two seniors prior to the start of the game.

VOLLEYBALL Lewis University’s men’s volleyball picked up a straight win over the Fort Wayne Mastodons in Fort Wayne, Ind., on Saturday evening.

The Flyers (9-4, 3-1 MIVA) hit .429 for the match while holding the Mastodons (9-4, 1-3 MIVA) to .165 attack percentage.

Lewis trailed 11-10 in the opening set but scored three straight points highlighted by back-to-back kills from Kyle Bugee (Los Altos, CA/Homestead) to regain the lead.

Fort Wayne cut the deficit to one a couple of times but the Flyers pulled away thanks to a 6-0 run behind kills from Tyler Mitchem (Bolingbrook, Ill./ Bolingbrook), Ryan Coenen (Franklin, WI/Franklin), Dalen Instenes (Racine, WI/William Horlick) and an ace from Bugee.

The Mastodons tried to come

back cutting the deficit to 21-15 but Lewis scored four of the final six points to take the opener 25-17.

The Flyers led for a majority of the second set except for an early tie as they hit .500 in the frame. Mitchem and Mitch Perinar (Channahon, IL/Minooka) combined for eight of the team’s 13 kills in the stanza.

Fort Wayne closed the gap to a couple of points but Lewis pulled away at the end for the 25-19 victory and the commanding 2-0 lead.

The final set belonged to Lewis as it led wire-to-wire to complete the sweep.

Leading 18-14 the Flyers put the match away with five straight points taking advantage of two attack errors and a service error from the Mastodons.

Coenen accounted for seven of the team’s 12 kills in the set.

Coenen led the team with 12 kills in the contest while Bugee added nine and Mitchem finished with eight.

Matt Yoshimoto (Ventura, CA/ Adolfo Camarillo) handed out 33 assists while Bugee led the way with nine digs.

Pelegrin Vargas led Fort Wayne with 11 kills. Colton Stone added nine and Tony Price finished with five.

Michael Keegan handed out 20 assists and Vargas had six digs.

Lewis is back at home on Thursday when it takes on the two-time defending national champion Ohio State Buckeyes at 7 p.m. at Neil Carey Arena.

Thursday night’s match will be the annual Black Out Match.

Rent-to-own options are not good deals DEAR DAVE, Is it okay to buy something using a rent-to-own plan?

JOSH DEAR JOSH, I advise against rent-to-own deals. Rent-to-own places get people in the door with promises of low monthly or weekly payments.

But when it comes to rent-to-own furniture, washer and dryer sets, and that kind of thing, you’ll end up paying much, much more than if you saved up and bought item outright. The amount you’ll pay out of pocket is even more ridiculous if you compare it to buying the same item, slightly used, somewhere else.

I don’t recommend rent-to-own scenarios when it comes to buying a home, either. Most of those offerings are listed at full retail price and then some. Plus, the contracts are tilted toward the seller’s side of the equation. And very few people who sign a rent-to-own home deal follow through and become homeowners.

When it comes to real estate

deals, the only thing I would consider — other than an outright cash purchase — is leasing with an option to buy. That’s different than rent-to-own, because in a rent-toown situation you’ve committed to purchase. On a lease with an option to buy deal, you have the right to purchase, but not the obligation.

Josh, most of the people who use rent-to-own deals are not in good financial shape. They’re deeply in debt, and they have no money.

Rent-to-own ensures they’ll stay there.

—DAVE DEAR DAVE, I’m looking at long-term disability insurance policies. What does the term “elimination period” mean?

GLEN DEAR GLEN, The elimination period is, by definition, the time from the point you’re declared disabled by a doctor until you begin receiving payments from the insurance company. If you have a 90-day elimination period,

it will be about that long from the time you’re officially declared disabled until you see your first check.

I recommend 90- to 180-day elimination periods, depending on what kind of financial shape you’re in, and how much money you have stashed away in savings, investments, and your emergency fund.

If you have a fully-loaded emergency fund of three to six months of expenses — and you have little or no debt, plus other money stashed away — you should be able to carry a policy with a longer elimination period.

And remember, the longer the elimination period, the lower your premiums will be. Hope this helps, Glen!
