New grant to tackle teen pregnancy New grant gives Valley View resources to help students ‘make responsible decisions’ By laura katauskas Bugle Staff

sweditor@buglenewspapers.com @BolingbrookInfo

The ramifications of teen pregnancy can set a devastating turn of events for many faced with decisions that may be out of their control. Based on reports that show in Bolingbrook alone, there were nearly 65 teen pregnancies in one year and a staggering rate of STDs, the Will County Health Department reached out to Valley View School School District to pilot a new program for prevention thanks to a state grant. The groups are pairing together to launch a five-year health education partnership targeting teen pregnancy prevention. “We are always wanting to work on preventive ways to ensure that students complete high school with success,” said Carie Johnstone, assistant executive director of support services. “Research shows that teen parents face many obstacles in terms of social, emotional, financial, and academic pressures and postsecondary secured options and completion.” The program is made possible by federal funding secured through a more than $1 million Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS) grant. The IDHS grants place a high priority on

“We need to provide our young people with the information they need to make responsible decisions. This grant will provide an effective, evidence-based resource to help us educate our youth.” - Bolingbrook Mayor Roger Claar communities with high rates of teen births in African American and Hispanic populations, as well as high STI rates. According to the WCHD, there were a total of 394 Will County teen births during 2013. Across Illinois, nearly 30 of every 1,000 live births were in the 15 to 19 age group. Vic Reato of the WCHD, said Bolingbrook, one of 10 Illinois communities, was chosen in part for its outstanding community spirit and support for healthrelated initiatives. “We know teen pregnancy is a pressing issue statewide and across the nation,” said Bolingbrook Mayor Roger Claar, who has given his blessing to the collaboration by offering office space to help the grantees manage their new five-year commitment. “We need to provide our young people with the information they need to make responsible decisions. This grant will provide

an effective, evidence-based resource to help us educate our youth.” In the fall of 2016, Valley View School District will launch the pilot program in health classes at Bolingbrook High School, Humphrey Middle School and Phoenix Experience with expansion to Jane Addams and Brooks middle schools shortly afterward. Once funding sources are determined, Romeoville schools, including Lukancic and Martinez middle schools and Romeoville High School, may be added. The program will include specially-trained Will County Health Educators and VVSD teachers who will roll out a specially-designed curriculum endorsed by the National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “The addition of WCHD Educators to talk to students will be helpful due to the training that they have received,” said Johnstone. “Also, our teachers will receive additional training on how to use the curriculum and talk to teens about sex. The grant will also cover new curriculum that is designed to resonate with teens but also puts emphasis on making decisions and learning how to honor their decisions.” According to Johnstone, currently high-school level students are given a comprehensive curriculum about sex, contraception and STDs. Final agreement reached on Uptown Square retail center By laura katauskas Bugle STaff

Time will tell – that was part of the thought process along with a leap of faith and years of planning that it took to start changing the face of Route 53 in Romeoville. For more than a decade, research studies and concept plans have been developed to draw a new downtown area, Uptown Square. It began with the demolition of a defunct shopping center that now is home to the Edward Hospital Athletic and Event Center. The center has been called the catalyst for growth, and the area is now beginning to attract the users that those decades-old plans had hoped for. Uptown Square will see a new 9,400-square-foot retail center that is set for construction in the spring. The Romeoville Village

Board recently approved the final agreement for the new retail center to be located at the northwest corner of Route 53 and Alexander Circle, directly in front of the event center. “This will complete the development within the 10-acre site and we look forward to additional improvements on other properties along the Route 53 corridor,” said Mayor John Noak. The developer is finalizing negotiations with BMO Harris Bank to relocate their Town Hall Drive

facility to this location. In addition, the long-awaited Fat Ricky’s Restaurant and Franconi’s Grocery broke ground on their new endeavor located in the same center at 648 North Independence and is expected to be complete by the fall. Fat Ricky’s will be moving its restaurant from its current location in the square, expanding and adding Franconi’s, The Italian Grocer. Franconi’s boasts that you will no longer have to travel to Italy for delicious pastries, authentic Italian coffee, or fresh cut deli meats and

cheeses. They are even offering to deliver your groceries. According to the duo, Frank and Rick, who own both Fat Ricky’s and Franconi’s, with a commitment to fine foods, impeccable customer service and honoring family values, they are building Franconi’s using the same philosophy Frank’s Nonna used in 1938 when she opened her grocery store in Italy. Their promise to their customers: “Nonna believed that you treat your customers like family and you treat your store like your home. With that in mind, Frank and Rick promise to transport you to a different country when you shop at Franconi’s.” Fat Ricky’s will include a restaurant and sports bar and Franconi’s Grocery will include an Italian delicatessen and grocery with Italian bakery and café. The two businesses will have separate entrances but will be connected through a vestibule for customers to walk from restaurant to store or vice versa. An abundant landscaping plan is in the works as well complete with a new, wider decorative sidewalk outlining Phelps Avenue and decorative paving, brick pavers and a mixture of plantings harmonious with the overall Uptown Square landscape design plan. Because the building sits in front of the center and is within the Uptown Square

development, which includes pedestrian-oriented features around the site, an attractive building design is required on all sides of the building. The principal exterior building materials include brick and stone. For years, the village has wanted to create a town center with retail, office, civic uses and public spaces in a pedestrian-friendly environment. Uptown Square is meant to provide a multi-purpose activity area to serve the community. The plan includes the athletic center, street parking and a special event area to host community events. Although Romeoville lacks a “traditional” downtown area, the village considers the 40-acre established site running from Route 53 to Dalhart Avenue as its downtown. The site was originally developed in the mid 1960s and over time has deteriorated with much of the retail development migrating westward alongWeber Road creating an underutilized area. The years of planning are taking formation that began with the new athletic center, the addition of McDonald across the way and now the addition the new retail center including Fat Ricky’s and Franconi’s. Noak said the pieces of the puzzle are starting to coming together as development is continuing and is in line with the village’s master plan.

High school art contest illustrates heroin’s deadly potential

Contest scholarships will be funded through money seized from drug criminals By bugle staff sweditor@buglenewspapers.com @BolingbrookInfo

Last year, 51 people in Will County died from heroin overdoses – the second highest number of heroin overdose deaths during a one-year period in the county’s history. To shed light on the dangers of heroin use and combat what some local officials have called an “epidemic,” the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office is enlisting the help of area high school students. “I hope participating students will first educate themselves about the horrendous dangers of using heroin, and then use their knowledge to create an original piece of artwork that drives home the message for people of all ages,” State’s Attorney James Glasgow said in a Feb. ?? press release announcing a countywide art contest aimed at illustrating the deadly potential of heroin. Any student who attends a Will County high school is eligible to enter the contest, which will award college scholarships to the three pieces that best illustrate

the consequences of using heroin. The first place winner will receive a $3,000 scholarship for a university, college, trade school or other post-high school educational institution, according to the state’s attorney’s office. Second and third place winners will receive $2,000 and $1,000 scholarships, respectively. “The purpose of this contest is to involve our young people in raising awareness about the heroin scourge that is destroying so many lives and killing so many people, not just in Will County, but across our nation,” Glasgow added. The contest scholarships will be funded through money seized from criminals who were engaged in narcotics trafficking, which Glasgow called a fitting use of those funds. “I can think of no better way to spend money that otherwise would have been used to pump deadly poison onto our streets than to redirect these resources toward an educational campaign aimed directly at eliminating the

Ready or not, tax season will be upon us sooner than we may like. Did you have to frantically search for your financial paperwork last year? Did you have to forego some deductions you deserved because you couldn’t find the supporting paperwork? Did you have to pay your tax preparer an additional amount to sort out the jumble of information you dumped in his or her office at the last minute? Here are some tips to make this year more organized. There are many ways to organize paperwork, so choose the ideas that resonate with you and adjust the system to fit your needs. First, choose a container to hold your documents. Several things to consider when deciding what container to use include: where you will keep it, how easy it is to put papers in it and retrieve papers from it, how secure it will allow your papers to be, and whether or not you’re a “visual” person who would prefer a somewhat open container. To simplify the remainder of this discussion, I’ll assume you’re using a file cabinet. However, my comments are relevant no matter what type of container you use. Next, create broad categories to

group papers. If your categories are too specific, you’ll have too many places to search for information. For example, rather than create separate categories for doctor’s bills, prescription receipts, and medical insurance, you might want a category called “Medical.” Be sure to name the categories the way you think of them. For example, you may prefer to call the category “Health,” rather than “Medical.” Use hanging file folders to contain each broad category. Place the folders inside the filing container, and put a well-labeled plastic file tab on the front of the each file. Use a bold, black marker to write the labels, or print them with your computer or a label maker – this will make the file names stand out and easy to read. You should also use manila folders inside the hanging folders. If any particular category has a lot of papers in it, manila file folders can help you create sub-categories. For example, for

the hanging file folder labeled “Medical” three manila folders inside could be labeled “Insurance,” “Prescriptions,” and “Doctor’s Bills.” The beauty of doing it this way is that all the medical information is in the same general location so you don’t have to hunt through your files for each subcategory. Put the most current papers in the front of each folder. This will make the information used most frequently easy to find. Additionally, consider using colored file folders to distinguish various categories. For example, all of the “Financial” files (e.g., Investments, Taxes, Bank Accounts, etc.) can be in green folders, while all of the “House” files (e.g., Mortgage, Maintenance, etc.) can be in blue folders, etc. This will allow you to easily zoom in on the appropriate section of your file cabinet and quickly find the file you want. Although properly setting up your files may be quite time consuming, you’ll reap the benefits for years to come. REPRESENTED Seven Bolingbrook wrestlers head home for sectional play

By mark gregory SpOrtS repOrter

mark@buglenewspapers.com @Hear_the_Beard

Bolingbrook will have seven wrestlers competing next week in front of their home fans at the IHSA Class 3A sectional tournament. Those seven advanced by placing in the top three at the Lockport Regional last week. But while seven move on, only one goes home a champion. Demetrius Crisanto improved his record to 31-8 with a 10-1 win over Plainfield North’s Justin Reynolds at 220 pounds. “This was huge for me,” Crisanto said. “Last year at regionals I was crushed out really fast, so I had to come back and fix that. Winning is the best feeling. Knowing how it felt last year getting crushed by the same teams – it means everything to me.” The win means even more to Crisanto because the football player turned wrestler is only in his second year of varsity wrestling and third overall. “I have really only been wrestling

for two years,” he said. “My sophomore year I only wrestled against freshmen because I was so inexperienced. I play football and one of my coaches said wrestling helps your football 10 fold so I thought I would give it a try and see if it worked out.” And work out it has. “My football game had gone up. I play defensive end and defensive tackle and wrestling helps with your handwork – getting your hand on guys before they can touch you, doing pass rush moves and with your conditioning,” said Crisanto. Whileheisuncommitted,Crisanto will play football somewhere in college, but right now, he has only one sport on his mind. “This is the only thing my mind is on right now other than school. All my focus is on this sport and finishing off my high school career the best I can,” he said. “It will be amazing in front of our home fans. All of our friends will be there and I’m sure it will be electric. It will be a great atmosphere.”

Raiders avenge early season loss to West By Mark Gregory sports reporter

mark@buglenewspapers.com @Hear_The_Beard

Since the beginning of the season theBolingbrookboysbasketballteam has been looking for chemistry. In the last three games – they

found it. The Raiders (9-9, 5-3) defeated Joliet West 68-61 last week in SouthWest Suburban Conference Blue Division action. The win came after wins over Romeoville and Stagg and avenged

a 10-point loss to the Tigers in the league opener earlier this year. “We are beating some good teams recently,” said Bolingbrook coach Rob Brost. “We won at Romeoville and then beat Stagg and Joliet West, two of the best teams in our sectional back-to-back is big for us. To the kids’ credit, they have done a good job of staying the course. We were 1-4 to start and 6-9 and we have really done a good job of keeping our attitudes and I am proud of the kids for that. That being said, we still have a lot of work to do and we are going to work hard.” The win against West saw the Raiders get out to a fast lead and increase the lead to 20 in the third quarter before the Tigers mounted a comeback. “We played with a lot of energy and did a nice job on the glass, which is something we talked about. We knew they dominated the glass at their place and we knew we needed to control that tonight and we outrebounded them by 10 or 12,” Brost said. “We talked about keeping them off the glass and out of the lane, which we did well, especially in the first half. Conversely, we wanted

He is so strong.” For Sams, he knew he had the open looks and the chance to help the team win. “It all starts with the team,” he said. “We have a good chemistry going these last few games and I don’t get those shots and I don’t get the chance to beat my man off the dribble if my teammates aren’t moving or aren’t finding me off the open swing.” Sams said the defeat at the hands

raiders | from page 11 Three other Raiders were in the final match and placed second in the regional as Dylan Burnoski lost 9-0 at 106 to Plainfield North’s Marcus Povlick, the No. 1 ranked wrestler in the state at that class. Also placing second were Isaiah Herrera, who fell 10-8 to Plainfield North’s Matt Hennessey at 195 and Clarence Golden, who lost 5-1 at 152 to Trevell Timmons of Lockport. “I faced him last year and then he was nearly (beating me by technical fall), but this year they are getting closer and closer,” Golden said. “I could have opened up a little bit more and done a little better.” Golden said the Raiders that advanced to the sectional round have nothing to do but work hard and fight for a spot at the state finals. “I believe champions aren’t born they are made,” he said. “We are underdogs, so why not just go out there and perform for the audiences and show what we are made of. I am going to practice three times a day and go nonstop. Last year we had four guys going to sectional and this year we have more and I have to say thank you to the coaches for that. They are putting in the time to make us better.” Advancing to sectionals with third place finishes were John O’Brien (126), Xavion Rolle (132) and Garrick Adams (285). Romeoville also competed in the Lockport Regional but did not have any advancing wrestlers.

of West earlier in the season had been on their minds since that day. “After the (first) game we said the young bucks were not going to get us again. We planned on putting it on them right from the jump and that’s what we did,” he said. “They are young and they take pride in playing us just like we take pride in

playing them. They are a good team, they will bounce back.” The Raiders are hoping to continue the streak they are on. “We talk all the time that how we prepare is how we prepare regardless of the record or win or lose,” Brost said. “That is our process – we work on the same things in practice. We

don’t look at records or standings we just try and get better every day. I know that’s coach speak but it is what we have to do.” The players knew the process would not be easy, but are looking for it to pay off at the end of the season. “We knew coming in that we

13

would go through some growing pains in the beginning,” Sams said. “We knew we had to take time to get it going, but we knew when we got it going that we would be scary for a lot of teams.”

Romeoville girls qualify for sectional as a team for first time By Scott Taylor sports editor

staylor@enterprisepublications.com @Taylor_Sports

Abby Wallace helped Romeoville advance to sectional as a team.

For the first time in program history, the Romeoville girls bowling team advanced to the next round as a team. The Spartans took home the fourth and final sectional qualifying spot out of the Sandburg Regional at Orland Bowl Saturday with a 5,594 sixgame total. It was a pair of sectional qualifiers from a year ago in senior Abby Wallace and junior Erin Cosner who led the way. “We worked so hard for this,” Cosner said. “I’m very proud of my team. We didn’t think of this like a regional tournament. We just thought of it as a regular tournament with no JV team.” “The emotions are very strong right now,” Wallace said. “We worked hard, we practice our spares, we have focused on bowling and have worked so hard for this. We didn’t let the pressure get to us.” It was the spare game that made the difference for the Spartans. “In practice that is almost all we work on,” Wallace said. “That pays off. We can throw the strike ball very well, so it is good to cover our spares.” We’ve been working on our spares really hard and it paid off really well,” Cosner said. Wallace led the way for the Spartans, finishing fourth overall with a 1,304. Cosner (1,198), Annaliese McClelland (1,110), Jenny Zaremba (1,098) and Miranda Sexton (894) also contributed. Now, the Spartans will be competing for one of four team state berths or one of five individual qualifiers Saturday at the Joliet West Sectional at Joliet Town and Country Lanes. “We’re hoping for the same thing,” Cosner said. “We want to go out and have fun. We want to bowl like we normally do. We are comfortable with the alley. We just take things one week at a time.” “We have bowled there so many times,” Wallace added. “We have placed there before, so we are confident there.”

WeatherTech scores with Super Bowl ad By laura katauskas Bugle Staff

sweditor@buglenewspapers.com @BolingbrookInfo

For local businessWeatherTech, its mission is “American Manufacturing Done Right,” and it appears that motto is working well for them right down to a Super Bowl ad that gained national accolades Sunday. MacNeil Automotive Products LTD, commonly known as WeatherTech, recently opened its seventh building in Bolingbrook, a 220,000 square foot office distribution warehouse and is touted as one of Bolingbrook’s greatest success stories for the industrial sector with its headquarters and showroom located at 841 Remington Blvd. MacNeil Automotive, in business since 1989, provides automotive protection and vehicle accessories, most notably car mats. The WeatherTech brand is known internationally and the company has run a Super Bowl ad for the past three years. “Keeping in lock step with our two previous Super Bowl spots, we decided to complement our Made in America theme by highlighting our most important resource – our employees,” said David MacNeil, founder and CEO of WeatherTech. He added that as a result they witnessed an immediate increase of 388 percent in traffic to weathertech. com as soon as the spot ran in the second quarter of the game. According to the company, WeatherTech is continuing on its managed path of growing its brand image by leveraging the viewership of the Super Bowl. In 2014, the company ran its first ad entitled “Can’t Do That,” which explained the challenges of producing products and creating manufacturing jobs in America. In 2015, the America at Work spot celebrated the fact that the company was able to build a manufacturing base and is marketing its Made in America automotive accessories and shipping them around the globe. In 2016, expanding on the Made in America theme, the company’s Resources commercial highlights the value of producing its automotive accessories locally and the impact that decision has on its employees. Once again, the spot features all employee talent as well as underscoring its advanced manufacturing facilities that produce quality automotive

accessory products in Bolingbrook. WeatherTech is Bolingbrook’s largest employer and it is the employees that matter--the sole premise of its Super Bowl ad and philosophy for good business. Its tagline-- “There’s a huge natural resource right here in America. It’s not the land, water, or power sources - it’s the people. At WeatherTech, we celebrate American workers.” The ad message hit home with many in social media, newspaper tallies across the states and news anchors were ready to praise the

American-made message. The big game ad got a nod of approval from ABC World News for highlighting its employees and the Chicago Tribune gave it a B+, calling attention to its direct advertising. Check out the ad at https://youtu. be/K9k_---XMOo WeatherTech automotive accessories can be purchased at its retail store located at 841 Remington Blvd.; ordered online at www.
