Bolingbrook resident gets chance to visit Alaska

Jordanne Pelkey attends Sitka WhaleFest science symposium and conference BY RYAN OSTRY Bugle Staff

@RyanOstry_BR18 rostry@buglenewspapers.com The distance separating Bolingbrook and Sitka, Alaska is 2,314 miles, but for Jordanne Pelkey a trip to the great land state was worth it. A Bolingbrook native and senior Biology major at Fort Lewis College in Colorado, Pelkey said her love for science started in Junior College when she took a plants and society class. “The class taught us a lot about the prairie ecosystem and a lot about the tall grasses and carbon cycle,” Pelkey said. “It was just really intriguing to find out about how things actually worked.” Besides her love for the field of science, Pelkey has also been an artist her entire life, which she said contributes to her love for society. This past summer, unexpectedly, Pelkey said she received an e-mail that gave her the chance of a lifetime. “One of my colleagues also received this e-mail about this opportunity to go to Alaska,” Pelkey said. “She said she was going to apply, so I sent in my 150-word paper on what I thought I would

The conference that started on Halloween and went through November 3 had a lifetime worth of experiences for Pelkey. She had the chance to engage

in scientific talks, speak with seminar speakers, participate in educational workshops and went on a whale watching tour. “The whale watching was on a boat in the ocean which was something that I thought was outstanding,” Pelkey said. “I’ve never done anything like that in my life before.” The conference and travel was funded through the Biomedical and Student Training (BLaST) grant from the University of Alaska, Fairbanks. The conference focused on the topic of OneHealth, which is an idea that the health and well being of the environment, animals and humans are all interconnected. This Sitka WhaleFest has been a program of the Sitka Sound Science Center for two decades, and Pelkey said she was just very honored that she had the chance to go and meet some of the speakers. “There was a series of about 10 talks with speakers that we had the chance to do and I would say that was my favorite part about the trip,” Pelkey said. “After all of the talks the speakers would go into a separate room with all of us and talk to us personally. “One of the nights there was this speaker named Jackie Hildering who is a Marine Detective and it was just so amazing to here her speak and how beautiful the ocean is, I had such an amazing time on the trip.”

Downers Grove South offensive lineman Erik Swenson is finding his way at Oklahoma BY MARK GREGORY Editorial Director

@Hear_The_Beard mark@buglenewspapers.com

In 2013 as a sophomore at Downers Grove South, under then-Mustang and current Minooka head coach John Belskis, offensive lineman Erik Swenson made a verbal commitment to the University of Michigan – the team he rooted for growing up. By the end of his senior season, Jim Harbaugh had replaced Brady Hoke as head coach of the Wolverines, Swenson’s scholarship was rescinded and he found himself without a team just weeks before signing day. It didn’t take long for Swenson to find somewhere to play, however, as he chose to attend the University of Oklahoma and history has proven that everything worked out for the better. Swenson redshirted his first collegiate season, but during the first three years in Norman, OK, the Sooners posted a combined record of 35-6, won three Big 12 titles and finished in the top five in the nation in both the Associated Press and Coaches Polls every year. Over that same time frame, the rebuilding Wolverines have gone 28-11 and finished no better than 10th in the nation. This season, Oklahoma is 11-1 on the season and looking to play its way into the Football Four as it will face Baylor in the Big 12 Championship game this weekend. Oklahoma handed Baylor its only

loss of the season in mid November when it came back from a 25-point defecit to win 34-31. A win over the Bears could would potentially be enough with the resume of wins this season. With Utah also being a one-loss team and the current No. 4 team, the Sooners may need some help from Oregon to earn the right to compete for a national championship. “It has been pretty good season,” Swenson said. “We are right where want to be. We are making the fight towards the end.” After redshirting his true freshman season, Swenson saw action in 10 games over the next two seasons combined and has played in nine of the Sooners’ 12 games. “It has been a good couple of years, but this year has been the best as I have been getting some good playing time and developing myself on the field,” Swenson said. “Everything worked out fir the best. When one door closes another one opens.” While he has been on the Oklahoma offensive line, Swenson has had the opportunity to block for Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray, both Heisman Trophy winners and both No. 1 overall draft picks in the National Football League, Mayfield by the Cleveland Browns and Murray to the Arizona Cardinals. This season, he has blocked for Jalen Hurts, a graduate transfer from the University of Alabama where was part of three national

Pair of Saints to compete in inaugural NAIA classic A pair of University of St. Francis football senior student-athletes, Kody Randa (SR/Sandwich, Ill.) and Brandon Ruffin (SR/Peoria, Ill.) will be representing the Saints at the 2019 NAIA Senior Football Classic, which will be held on Saturday, Dec. 14, at Memorial Stadium in Savannah, Ga. The inaugural game will feature around 100-plus seniors from across the nation with team rosters divided into east and west squads. Randa, a three-year starter and 2018 honorable mention All-MSFA Midwest League honoree, compiled a team third-most 61 total tackles (30 solos) this season to go with four tackles for minus 17 yards and a quarterback hurry. The 2017 All-MSFA Midwest League Second-Team performer concluded his four-year (2016-19) career with 196 total tackles (87 solo stops) in 43 appearances. He also accumulated 4.5 quarterback sacks for minus 40 yards and had two pass interceptions for 40 yards in his USF career. Ruffin, a 2019 All-Mid-States

The Lewis University women’s bowling team finished its fall season with a 10th-place finish at the National Team Match Games, a

United States Bowling Congress Tier One Tournament, hosted by McKendree University over the weekend at Bel Air Bowl. The Flyers, bowling in their first USBC tournament of the season, were consistent throughout the weekend, averaging a 180 after both six traditional team games Saturday and 20 Baker games Sunday. They finished with a grand total of 9,024 pins. Mount Mercy won the tournament with 10,202 pins, while Wright State was second with 9,874 and St. Ambrose was third with 9,831. Lewis was in seventh place after the first day, shooting a 5,423 in traditional play. It sat in eighth place heading into the final block of four Baker games Sunday before being passed by a pair of teams. Still, the Flyers shot a 3,601 on the day Sunday. Individually the Flyers were paced by Kayla Dench (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield East), who shot

a 1,103 in six games and Kylie Johnson (Belvidere, Ill./Belvidere North), who added a 1,086. Kaylee Zukovich ( Joliet, Ill./ Joliet West) recorded a 943 in five games, Clara Ferrari (Peru, Ill./ LaSalle-Peru) had a 749 in four, Michelle Tiltges (Lansing, Ill./ Thornton Fractional South) had a 715 in four, Jenna Sussenbach (Naperville, Ill./Plainfield North) rolled a 341 in two, Hayley Gregerson (Beach Park, Ill./Warren Township) shot a 329 in two and Erin Biccochi (Ladd, Ill./Hall) added a 157 game. • Lewis’ 14th ranked women’s volleyball team has received the number one seed and will host the upcoming NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Tournament at Neil Carey Arena from December 5-7. The Flyers (27-5) earned their 14th consecutive bid and 19th overall, as the bracket for the Midwest Regional was announced on Nov. 25. Lewis will take on eighth-seeded Saginaw Valley State (20-8) on De-

cember 5th. In their last meeting, the Flyers defeated the Cardinals 3-0 back on August 31, 2012 in West Palm Beach, Fla. Hillsdale earned the number two seed and will play seventh seeded Indianapolis. Missouri-St. Louis will take on Michigan Tech in the 3-6 matchup. Ferris State earned the number four seed and will take on fifth seeded Rockhurst. “We’re thrilled to host the regional again,” Lewis head women’s volleyball coach Lorelee Smith said. “It will be nice to play on our own court, sleep in our own beds and have our normal routine. Ultimately, we have to prepare ourselves to take on Saginaw Valley’s best shot and have to come ready to play next Thursday.” Lewis’ streak of 14 consecutive NCAA trips is the longest of all women’s volleyball teams in the Midwest Region and longest ever of any Lewis program since the Flyers joined the NCAA Division II ranks in 1981.

year has done a really good job and working hard to be the best he can.” While he has had fun working for the skill players upfront, Swenson said it was his fellow linemen that he has had the best time with. “The quarterbacks have been impressive, but looking at the guys in front of me on the offensive line has been great,” he said. “Orlando Brown is a starter for the Ravens

and is doing a great job there and Bobby Evans got his first career start with the Rams and did a great job, Cody Ford playing for the Buffalo Bills and Dru Samia and Ben Powers – those guys were all great mentors and great friends and I am super happy to see them having success in the league. They were great mentors on the field with what technique to use and how

to read a pass rusher and how to study film, but honestly, the biggest take away was what they did off the field – always did the best they could in classes, always got in an extra strength time with the coaches. “Our offensive line had a big rebuilding year this year and we had to replace four starters and we looked at what the guys before us

did and how they were just as successful on the field as they were off.” As a redshirt junior, Swenson has another year of eligibility left next season and could stay and get even better on the field and hopefully follow his fellow line alums into the NFL, but for now, the focus is on Baylor and a shot at a berth in the final four.

Irene King Elementary School 3rd grade student Nathan Willett invested a few taps on the keyboard on behalf of his class and the result is $2000 in classroom supplies from J.B. Hunt Transport. J.B. Hunt has a program called Adopt-a-Class that accepts nominations for the donations through the company website. The key part of the nomination is when the person making the nomination must explain why the nominated classroom deserves the donation. Nathan obviously did a great job on behalf of Mrs. Deb Barrett’s class, because a J.B. Hunt truck pulled up in front of Irene King to deliver the supplies. Watch the students gleefully accept and unload their delivery.

BUSINESS + REAL ESTATE DAVE SAYS

SHERIFF’S SALE OF REAL ESTATE of 235 Essex Court, Bolingbrook, IL 60440 (Single Family Residence). On the 19th day of December, 2019 to be held at 12:00 noon, at the Will County Courthouse Annex, 57 N. Ottawa Street, Room 201, Joliet, IL 60432, under Case Title: Ditech Financial LLC Plaintiff V. Thomas P. Prignano, AKA Thomas Prignano Defendant. Case No. 17 CH 0200 in the Circuit Court of the Twelfth Judicial Circuit, Will County, Illinois.

DAVE SAYS By Dave Ramsey

@DaveRamsey daveramsey.com

Landlords & duplexes DEAR DAVE: I’m 23, debt-free, and I’ve almost got my fully funded emergency fund in place. I was curious about your thoughts on saving up money to buy a duplex, living on one side, and renting out the other. It would be my first home purchase, and my first rental property.

DERRICK DEAR DERRICK: Well, the good news is your renter would be right next door. You can keep an eye on things. The bad news? Your renter would be right next door. It would be a necessity to have very clear boundaries in your relationship. Otherwise, some people will come knocking on your door at midnight expecting you to change a light bulb or something silly like that. The trick to being a good landlord, especially for a rookie, is learning how to balance being firm with people, while still being fair and kind. Another thing to consider is the purchase of a duplex in general. The upside is you’ve got someone helping pay the bill when it’s rented. The downside is when you get ready to sell a duplex, most of the time your buyer is an investor. This means you’re dealing with a wholesale-minded buyer, and that tends to hold prices on duplexes down more than it would a comparable, traditional, single-family home. On the other hand, the cute, young couple looking to buy a perfectly staged and freshly painted home is usually more than willing to pay full retail. I’ve owned several duplexes in my life, but I’ve always done much better with single family homes. They’re easier to rent, they tend to stay rented more consistently, and as a rule, they appreciate faster. Just know your upsides and your downsides if you’re planning on moving into a duplex and doing this. And be very careful about your location. You’ll come out much better mentally, emotionally, and financially in an area where homeowners take pride in their neighborhood!
