Health care clinic opens to serve community

Bolingbrook Clow Airport reopens Closed for more than six months in 2015, the Bolingbrook International Clow Airport reopened after an approximate $7 million renovation.

“We’re back and we’re better than ever,” said Joe DePaulo, manager of the airport, who also remarks that a waiting list now exists for pilots to keep their plane at the village-owned airport that reopened in late December.

Formerly operating out of a small storefront in town, a new Romeoville VNA Health Care clinic opened its door in January to a new larger facility with its 22-exam room clinic at 160 Independence Boulevard.

The airport shut down in early May 2015 with most of the planes moved to temporary locations, including the flight school, maintenance, etc. It was all about safety, with a new runway installed, widened to 75 feet from 50 feet; new taxiway exits, improved blast pads and lighting and storm water management.

“They all love it, they all came back and all the pilots are commenting on it,” said DePaulo.

VNA Health Care is a Medicaid and Medicare-certified, low cost clinic that offers patients a discount if they are not covered by an insurance plan.

It is described as a “one-stop shop” for general health care needs. VNA Health Center provides a full menu of services including medical, dental, mental health and chronic disease management care.

Years in the making, the plan to improve the airport came thanks to a federally-funded overhaul.

The group came before the Romeoville Village Board in 2015 with a concept plan for a new facility. While federal approval was sought, VNA opened a small facility at Taylor and Weber Roads, in the Jewel-Osco shopping plaza.

VNA built its new facility on a 3.1 acre parcel of land next to Romeoville High School near the new traffic signal, west of Route 53 and north of Material Service Drive.

Mistwood Golf Club completes 2-year construction project The transformation is complete and the long-awaited Clubhouse at Mistwood Golf Club was finished in 2016.

After announcing that the project was completed, Mistwood invited the public visit the club and tour the new facility, including its great hall,meeting rooms and McWethy’s Tavern – a Scottish-inspired pub.

“The reinvestment made by Mistwood Golf Club has made a significant impact in our community,” Romeoville Mayor John Noak had said. “A world-class destination resort like this is a tremendous asset to our community and our local economy. We are eager for the golf community to experience the enhancements made to the course as well as enjoy the amenities the new clubhouse provides.”

Mistwood’s Clubhouse offers more than 6,000 square feet of meeting space with panoramic views of Mistwood’s Scottish-like links golf course. The “Great Hall” can accommodate large parties of up to 240 people,

including plenty of room for a seated dinner and dance floor.

The Terrace Room provides an intimate space for smaller groups of 50 or less. The courtyard is ideal for outdoor ceremonies and cocktails and, along with the old-world bell tower, adds a very special touch to photo opportunities.

McWethy’s Tavern is an upscale pub-style restaurant that reflects owner Jim McWethy’s Scottish ancestry. The restaurant offers a variety of dining environments such as fireside tables, semi-private dining areas, a copper-top bar, and the patio, with its unobstructed views of the golf course.

The village worked with the Illinois Department of Transportation to facilitate the reconstruction of the runway and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) was responsible for the bulk of the cost, 90 percent, of the $6.8 million project. The village is responsible for approximately $680,000, which was budgeted for previously through a bond issue.

A concept plan was introduced

by Thomas Toyota to the Romeoville village board for a 46,000-square-foot building with a showroom, sales area, service areas and office space.

The 5.8 acre site, now vacant, is to be located at the southwest corner of Weber Road and Grand Haven Circle, and is part of the Rose Plaza subdivision that was approved in 2005 and zoned as B-3 highway regional shopping.

The exterior of the building will match the corporate brand identity for Toyota that is recognizable in the newly constructed or renovated Toyota dealerships. “This opens a lot of opportunities to the village and the community and will hopefully attract more business and solidify the Weber Road corridor, “ said Mayor John Noak.

Farm & Fleet breaks ground in Romeoville Blain’s Farm & Fleet recently broke ground in early spring at the southwest corner of Airport and Weber roads and opened just time for the holidays.

Khouri wins 11th District nomination

Nearly 30 acres of land was dedicated to new retail with the addition of a new Blain’s Farm and Fleet and seven additional retail outlots.

Official results confirmed Tonia Khouri as the Republican nomination for the 11th Congressional District after the March 15 primary election.

After all provisional and mailin votes were tabulated by the March 29 deadline, only 370 votes separated Khouri and Nick Steella. Herman White finished third in the race.

The Romeoville village board annexed the property and approved the 122,000-squarefoot facility and the additional retail that will be named and approved at a later date. The site includes a covered customer pick-up area and extensive decorative landscaping and retention pond at the corner of the lot due to topography of the land.

Because the vote tallies were so close on election night, Stella was reluctant to concede the race until all provisional ballots were counted. He then publicly given his support to Khouri.

Khouri will face Democratic incumbent Bill Foster in the upcoming general election.

The company employs more than 100 associates and this will be the company’s 37th store and the first in Will County. The new design is the first of its kind, and incorporates many green aspects while providing customers a more enjoyable shopping experience.

Valley View tech The Valley View School District 365u took on an ambitious

three-year, $9.1 million project to ensure new technologies are at the fingertips of all its students.

The district will more than double the number of student devices, including Chromebooks and laptops, over the next three years. The district will purchase 9,000 devices, increasing the number of devices from 7,000 to 16,000 for a one-to-one ratio for its students.

According to district officials, the ability to move to more technologically advanced teaching methods has been in consideration for some time.

While the purchase and roll out of devices will be complete in three years, the financial cost will be spread over six years through existing local resources. There is no cost to students, according to the district.

Director of Technology Astrid Welch reported that there are a myriad of reasons for the project, including new curriculum resources that are web-based, an increase in online assessments and digital citizenship. Additionally, he said providing students with a device would help facilitate the use of the “4Cs of Twenty-first Century Learning,”— collaboration, communication, creativity and critical thinking. The advent of Google Apps for Education and the Chromebook, as well as student home access to the Internet and considerations over available physical space in district buildings, were all defining factors in this initiative.

The first year will focus on the district’s middle and elementary schools, adding 2,445 devices to elementary schools’ current 2,780 and 2,220 devices to middle schools’ current 1,905.

The high schools currently have 2,275 devices and will see the larger increase in the third year of the plan, with an additional 1,465 devices.

The first year of the plan will cost the district nearly $4 million – $2.7 million in device costs, $175,000 for deployment and nearly $800,000 in staff costs.

The technology department proposes utilizing lease funds to cover these costs, staggering the payments with each phase being financed over four years to lessen the financial impact to the district.

Romeoville breaks ground on new retail center Uptown Square continued to take shape in May with the groundbreaking of a new retail

center at at the northwest corner of Route 53 and Alexander Circle in front of the Edward Hospital Athletic and Event Center.

The 9,400-square-foot retail center is expected to include six tenants including BMO Harris bank and the return of Subway.

“We look forward to the opening of this Center as this will bring additional retail along the Route 53 corridor, as well as attracting new development in the immediate area,” said Mayor John Noak.

BMO Harris Bank is expected to occupy a portion of the center and plans show for three drivethru lanes to accommodate bank users. Meanwhile construction is moving along for the new Fat Ricky’s restaurant and long-awaited Franconi’s grocery store. The approximately 10,500-square-foot building will be located in Outlet 1 of Uptown Square.

Fat Ricky’s will include a restaurant and sports bar and Franconi’s Grocery will include an Italian delicatessen and grocery with Italian bakery and café. The two businesses will have separate entrances but will be connected through a vestibule for customers to walk from restaurant to store or vice versa.

County plan, state mandate create

controversy over 911 center consolidation Will County and local public safety officials had been grappling with a state mandate that requires the county to eliminate half of its six 911 dispatch centers.

For months, local agencies have been discussing the best possibilities and locations for its dispatch centers by the July 1 deadline.

Bolingbrook Public Safety Director Tom Ross explained the rationale, saying the Joliet 911 dispatch would remain because it is the county’s busiest center. The second PSAP would be Wescom – a newly built center with 21 member police and fire agencies primarily on the western side of Will County, including Bolingbrook, Plainfield, Lockport and Crest Hill. Finally, the plan called for a third new center that would combine agencies on the east side of the county.

Wescom Executive Director Steve Rauter said the issue of building a new center dates back to the initial plan and study for a new center on Caton Farm Road.

VALLEY VIEW SCHOOL BRIEFS MOBILE-FRIENDLY WEBSITES TO DEBUT AT VVSD MIDDLE SCHOOLS NEXT MONTH All five Valley View School District 365U middle schools will launch new, more responsive and engaging websites in January as part of a pilot project that will bring similar technology to every VVSD school by the 2017-18 school year.

Designed to look and function exactly like the main VVSD website (www.vvsd.org) which was launched last summer, each middle school will be able to customize its own content to meet the specific needs of their school community.

“One of the first things you will notice is a uniform look and feel between the district and middle school sites,” said VVSD Digital Learning Specialist Nicole Eimer.

“Navigation will be consistent throughout the new websites. Information can be accessed quickly and, in many cases, with fewer clicks.”

Prominent features will include student information (schedules, grades, bus routes, etc.), news and announcements, school and activity calendars, a district-wide staff directory and lunch menus.

“These middle school websites will serve as a communications hub, engaging all members of the community,” Superintendent James A. Mitchem Jr. said. “We’re particularly proud of the fact that the new websites will make it easier for teachers to communicate directly with their students and families through their own Schoolwiresprovided pages.”

Teachers will easily be able to add or edit content on their own pages, add or change assignments, update reading lists and post homework tips. Other possibilities include classroom rules and expectations, classroom calendars, online image galleries and practice assignments.

All of the information will be easily accessible from any technology device—computers, tablets and smartphones. Each view will be optimized for any screen size.

All school and district data is protected with encryption, user authentication and application security. Performance is fast and reliable 24/7 even in high volumes of concurrent use.

“We are pleased to add more Valley View schools to the Blackboard family,” said Christiane Crawford, Vice President of Blackboard Community Engagement. “We look forward to providing excellent support and service to students,

STATE AGENCY NAMES BHS F.A.N.S.S. SUPPORTER VOLUNTEER OF THE WEEK Bolingbrook High School F.A.N.S.S. (Friends And Neighbors Supporting Students) volunteer Freddie Thomas is this week’s Serve Illinois Commission Volunteer of the Week.

The Commission, a 40-member bi-partisan group appointed by the Governor and administered by the Illinois Department of Public Health, is charged with helping to strengthen Illinois communities by enhancing volunteerism and instilling an ethic of service throughout the State.

Thomas, a 29-year resident of Bolingbrook whose youngest daughter is a BHS graduate, was cited by Serve Illinois for the two hours a week that she spends in the BHS cafeteria encouraging students and simply letting them know she cares, as well as the volunteer work she does for The Progressives-Harambe, Inc., a community-based non-profit women’s organization dedicated to helping children educationally, culturally, socially and emotionally.

Freddie is a strong believer that in order to make communities better you have to give back,” a Serve Illinois spokesperson said. “She hopes other residents will do the same.”

Enabling legislation requires the Serve Illinois Commission to promote and support community service in public and private programs to meet the needs of Illinois citizens, to stimulate new volunteerism and community service initiatives and partnerships, and to serve as a resource and advocate within the Department of Public Health for community service agencies, volunteers, and programs which utilize State and private volunteers.

Serve Illinois oversees all aspects of program administration and training for the AmeriCorps program. AmeriCorps provides trained, dedicated people to help non-profit organizations accomplish their missions and to make more effective use of volunteers.

Newly Passed 21st Century Cures Act Is No Panacea Not everyone thinks the Cures Act will be wonderful for patients

BY TRUDY LIEBERMAN RURAL HEALTH NEWS SERVICE Will patients benefit from the passage of the 21st Century Cures Act? After listening to politicians and reading the headlines, most people might think it’s the best thing ever to come along for patients.

“A new day for medical research is on the horizon,” proclaimed Rep. Fred Upton, the outgoing chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee which had just won a major victory last week. “The House and the Senate have passed this bipartisan legislation which will ensure our health system can keep pace with incredible advances in science and technology,” Upton said in the GOP’s weekly radio address. “We needed to do better. And with 21st Century Cures, we will.”

Media headlines mirrored Upton’s victory declaration. Headlines like this from the Wall Street Journal, “House Passes Health Bill to Speed Drug Approvals, Boost Biomedical Research” seemed to say it all: faster drug approvals, more money for research, less pesky regulation.

Or was there more to the story? Not everyone thinks the Cures Act will be wonderful for patients.

But their voices were drowned out in the slick public relations campaign Upton’s committee waged over the past few years using some 200 or so patient advocacy organizations to push for the bill.

Most of those groups have strong ties to the drug and medical device industry.

A recent study by Dr. Vinay Prasad, an oncologist at Oregon Health Sciences University, found that threequarters of 68 cancer advocacy groups he studied disclosed sponsorship from pharmaceutical companies.

Some groups received money from as many as 16 or 17.

Prasad told me, “Ten years from now, someone with a cancer diagnosis will be worse off with this bill.

People will be exposed to more things that don’t work.” Prasad and

others say the Cures Act actually lowers the regulatory standards for drugs and devices. It’s a step backward for patients.

In a nutshell the Act turns current regulatory practice on its head.

Randomized trials, the gold standard for medical research, may disappear if a drug company wants to sell a medicine for a different condition than the one it’s already approved for.

Instead it can use “real world evidence” to show the drug also works for a new indication.

Such “evidence” could be observational studies, which are less reliable than randomized trials, but are cheaper and take less time.

The FDA can use patient experience to inform its regulatory decisions – information about the impact of a disease or related therapy on patients’ lives.

The data can come from patients, family members, caregivers, patient advocacy organizations, disease research foundations and drug manufacturers.

The agency can approve new drugs on the basis of data summaries rather than requiring the FDA to independently analyze study results for a new drug indication.

Drug makers would have to submit

all their data, but the FDA would not have to review it.

And although the bill authorizes billions for new medical research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the funding is not guaranteed, and the NIH would have to fight Congress for the money.

The Cures Act is the culmination of a 20-year effort by the drug industry and Beltway think tanks to loosen standards and permit new uses for drugs already approved in order to expand their markets.

It can be traced back to the 1997 FDA Modernization Act, which was then - as the Cures Act is now - sold on the promise of getting cures to market faster.

The 1997 law loosened regulatory standards and reduced the number of clinical trials needed for drug approval.

Are the changes brought about by the earlier law a harbinger of what’s to come?

The reporting by John Fauber and his colleagues at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel offers a cautionary tale.

In the last few years the paper has reported how drug and device makers have spent huge sums of money to sell drugs for conditions that were once thought to be part of everyday life.

The reporters found that drug companies turned conditions such as overactive bladder, adult ADHD, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder into medically treatable ailments.

They reported that the latter was not even recognized as a mental disorder until 13 years after the first drug treatments were on the market.

“Drugs used to treat the various medicalized conditions don’t work that well and often have side effects that are nearly as common as the benefit,” Fauber told me.

Are we turning the calendar back to 1933 when a book called “100,000,000 Guinea Pigs” was published exposing the dangers of patent medicines?

Federal oversight of drugs was pretty lax then, and patients died.

It’s obvious drug makers will benefit from looser regulation. It remains to be seen whether patients will, too.

Local police stepping up ‘Drive Sober’ campaign If someone you know has been drinking, do not let that person drive Local police departments are looking for drunk drivers this holiday season as part of a special year-end “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” enforcement.

Beginning Dec. 16 and continuing into the New Year, motorists will see stepped up enforcement to watch for anyone who is driving impaired, distracted or without a seat belt, according to a news release from the depart-

ment. Area police are helping Illinois drive zero fatalities to reality, so officers will have zero tolerance for drunk and drug impaired driving this holiday season.

Too often, drivers take to the roads after drinking at holiday celebrations. Data shows the decision to drive while impaired can have serious and sometimes deadly consequences. In 2015, 35,092 people in the United States

were killed in motor vehicle traffic crashes, and 29 percent (10,265) died in crashes where the driver had a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) over the limit of .08.

This ought to be the ‘most wonderful time of the year,’ so local police are doing whatever it takes to help save lives by keeping our roads safe. If you choose to drive impaired, you not only risk your safety and that of others, but you will also face serious legal consequences.

Drunk or drug impaired driving offenders often serve jail time, lose their driver’s license, are

charged higher insurance rates and pay dozens of other unanticipated expenses ranging from attorney fees, court costs, car towing and repairs, and lost wages due to time off work. But the ultimate cost of impaired driving is causing a traffic crash that results in injury or death.

Follow these tips to stay safe on the road this holiday season: If you will be drinking, plan on not driving. Arrange for a safe ride home or designate a sober driver before you start the party.

If you become intoxicated or drug-impaired, do not drive for

any reason. Call a taxi, phone a sober friend or family member, or use public transportation.

If someone you know has been drinking, do not let that person get behind the wheel. Take their keys, take them home or help them arrange a safe way home.

If you see an impaired driver on the road, contact your local law enforcement. Your actions could help save someone’s life.

Buckle your seat belt, regardless of where you are seated. By law, all occupants, in all seating positions, must wear their seat belt.

Check. Safety? Check. These are some of the precautions volunteers at the Crisis Line of Will and Grundy Counties are taking when people in crisis call in for support.

Untold amounts of people will be served by the not-for-profit agency by the year’s end as it looks to cap off its 40th year.

Crisis Line of Will and Grundy Counties executive director Michele Batara said reaching this milestone brings great meaning.

“As the director, it is a really big milestone especially in the not-for-

profit world with funding always being an issue,” she said. “To be able to say, ‘you reached 40 years’ is actually a very amazing accomplishment and feeling because it’s getting harder and harder in today’s economy and world to be able do that.”

The Crisis Line of Will and Grundy Counties continues to support the community through a number of services, including telephone counseling, suicide prevention and intervention, reassurance calls and information and referral. Those supports are available at no cost to those in need.

The Crisis Line of Will and Grundy Counties is a member agency of

United Way. That program funds the organization’s operations, minus grants and contracts.

Batara said the agency has responded well to change over time.

“We’ve been able to serve the same services that we’ve always have,” she said. “Over the years, it seems like less and less resources we’ve been able to do that. Even though, maybe technology has increased for us. We use computers now, before we didn’t.”

The organization has accomplished a number of feats in the last 40 years. The Crisis Line of Will and Grundy Counties started utilizing a database for referrals within the last three years.

Batara said this offers another way of reaching individuals who might not otherwise call the crisis line, but still being able to help

them.

The introduction of the online database referral system allows people to look for resources and find all of what they need in one central location.

“The fact that we’ve been there and been able to provide the same services to the same amount of people or more people throughout the year is some of our accomplishments,” Batara said. “To say that we celebrated 40 years is an accomplishment.”

While the Crisis Line of Will and Grundy Counties turned 40 in 2016, the agency still works to build community awareness for services and programs available to those in need.

“Our services are primarily over the phone,” Batara said. “However, we do outreach, we do expos, I do

a suicide workshop. We go out and we try to educate whoever is interested about suicide warning signs, how can you help, what are things you can do.”

The Crisis Line of Will and Grundy Counties is an agency run, in part, by trained volunteers.

Batara said all those manning the crisis line phones understand the importance of serving as a listening ear.

“We’re people who care and want to be able to help as many people as we can the best that we can,” she said. “I know it’s limited, it’s over the phone but it really does make a difference in many people’s lives.”

The sports year of 2016 was filled with several memorable moments, but some stood out above all the others.

Here are a few of those stories:

4-FOR-4 Morgan Tuck has always been a winner.

The 6-foot, 2-inch Bolingbrook native won three IHSA Class 4A state titles with the Raiders, she was twice named Gatorade Illinois Player of the Year and has helped Team USA claim four gold medals in International competition.

However, with an 82-51 win over Syracuse April 5, Tuck took winning to a historic level.

She scored 19 points in the win and added seven rebounds, five assists and a blocked shot, helping the University of Connecticut claim its fourth-straight NCAA title – the first time that has ever

been done since the women’s NCAA tournament began in 1982.

“This has been our goal since we came here,” Tuck said. “Since we were freshmen, we’ve wanted this for so long, and to be able to do it – get four in a row – that’s just special right there. We just love each other. We love being around each other. We have so much fun with each other off the court and it translates really well on the court.

We work extremely hard – in the summer, preseason – and all that work paid off.”

The win was the 11th championship for the school – placing the Huskies in a tie with the UCLA men for most ever NCAA Division-I basketball titles.

The trio posted a four-year record of 151-5, with four of the losses coming their freshman season. Every one of the 151 wins was by double digits. They went 24-0 in NCAA tournament games and won 75 consecutive games to end SEE 2016 PAGE 10

This season, Tuck was named to the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association All-America First Team, Associated Press All-America Second Team and, awarded the American Athletic Conference Sportsmanship Award and was named to the All-AAC First Team and to the Bridgeport Regional All-Tournament Team and Final Four All-Tournament Team.

Tuck totaled 1,298 for her career at UConn, scoring 17 points against Maryland on Dec. 28 to become the 41st Husky to join the 1,000-point club.

DRAFTED In the Birmingham Bowl, the final game of his junior year at the University of Florida, former Bolingbrook High School standout Antonio Morrison tore multiple ligaments in his left knee - putting his football career in jeopardy.

Morrison had a pair of surgeries less than two months apart and defied all odds by returning to full strength before the start of his senior season and recording 103 total tackles, 2.5 sacks, 11 tackles for loss, one pass defended and one forced fumble.

While his play earned him an invitation to the NFL draft combine in Indianapolis, an infection forced him to withdraw from the combine and go on a six-week regiment of antibiotics – again negatively impacting the future of his career.

The 21-year-old Morrison fought through all of the adversity and along the way caught the attention of professional team, including the Indianapolis Colts, who on April 30, made him the first Raider ever drafted into the National Football League.

JUMPING FOR COUNTRY For the last four years, Bolingbrook native Troy Doris has had his sights set on competing in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio De Janerio, Brazil – however the way he is getting there may seem unconventional to some.

PITCH PERFECT There are certain feats that all athletes - depending on their sport - strive for.

A bowler wants a 300 game, a golfer a hole in one and a football player a game-winning catch.

For a pitcher, there are a couple of career altering feats they can accomplish and for a pair of Valley View hurlers they earned these

feats on the same day.

Sophomore pitcher Audrey Sizemore defeated Plainfield South 3-0 on May 5 by throwing a perfect game, while Bolingbrook’s Jacob Nagel tossed a no hitter against Sandburg in a 4-0 win.

At the same time Sizemore was throwing her perfect game in Joliet, Bolingbrook’s Jacob Nagel was in Orland Park throwing a nohitter against the Eagles.

The senior struck out six batters over seven innings to help the Raiders move to 12-9 on the season and 7-2 in the SWSC Blue.
