Teacher brings hands-on science to students Teacher Fredy Felix orders shark specimens for the classroom to accompany a science unit

Everyone loves shark day.

Fifth-grade students at Irene King Elementary School in Romeoville learned first hand about spiny dogfish sharks, demonstrating to their younger peers with actual specimens.

Teacher Fredy Felix ordered the specimens for the classroom to

accompany a science unit, having students prepare reports about the sharks, developing both their science and writing skills. The class then took it a step farther, teaching their own peers what they had learned, making presentations to second and third grade students using the sharks as a visual aid.

“I really enjoy finding interesting ways to get children excited about school and learning,” said

Felix. “As teachers, we compete with video games and various tech gadgets that detract students from focusing. As a result, the task of keeping students engaged becomes harder. Hands-on activities and out-of-the-box lessons help to revitalize student interest and help me reach the learning objective.”

Sharks weren’t the first to appear in Felix’s classroom. Earlier this school year, after learning about the body systems of frogs, students were able to view dissected frog specimens, again using the visual aid as a teaching tool.

And the school year isn’t over yet, more hands-on initiatives await, promises Felix.

New trustee to fill vacancy on Bolingbrook village board

An active community member, Sheldon Watts, took a seat on the Bolingbrook Village Board, filling a vacancy left by veteran trustee Joseph Morelli.

A long-time, committed board member, Morelli submitted his resignation explaining increased responsibilities in his career forced his hand in stepping down. Morelli served on the Bolingbrook village board for more than 16 years, his term expiring this April.

Watts, a Bolingbrook resident since 2007, is active in the community. He was elected as DuPage Township trustee in the April 2013 election; serves as a board member on the Will County Center for Community Concerns and the Bolingbrook Exchange Club.

An avid volunteer, Watts was also named as Bolingbrook’s Male Citizen of the Year in 2014.

He works as the Lead Customer Compliance Manager for a telecommunications service provider and is the company’s program manager for its digital security strategy program.

Police bring Christmas early to kids Meijer increased their donation this year, donating $75 gift cards to each participant

BY BUGLE STAFF For 150 Bolingbrook children, Christmas came early. The Bolingbrook Police Department teamed up with Meijer in the 18th Annual “Shop with a Cop” event Dec.15. The event was hosted at the Meijer located at 755 E. Boughton Rd., where Meijer corporate officials were able to attend the event where they witnessed the interaction and success of the program within the Bolingbrook community, organizers said.

Meijer increased their donation this year, donating $75 gift cards to each participant, as well as providing free gift wrapping, food and drinks for all of the participants.

Bolingbrook Police believe Meijer Store Director Donald Williams and assistant Pam Willis played instrumental roles to make the day an overwhelming success.

Bolingbrook Director of Public Safety Director Tom Ross and Deputy Chief Ken Teppel led numerous Bolingbrook Police Department

employees, their family members and Explorer Post #38 in this effort to make the holiday brighter for all.

The event is meant to enhance positive relationships between members of the police department, the selected Bolingbrook students and their families.

“The program has grown every year and the positive interaction is incredible. I have coordinated the event since the inception,” said Commander of Investigations Mika Rompa. “Everyone involved looks forward to this each holiday season and it truly brings Bolingbrook together.

We are very fortunate to have the support of Meijer, Mayor Roger Claar, the Village Officials and Director Ross. They make this possible.”

According to Rompa, in 1999, Mayor Claar and the Village Trustees brought the first Meijer store in the Chicagoland area to Bolingbrook and they continue to support numerous community outreach programs such as this.

Metra planning continues New station to be located at 135th St. on Citgo Refinery lot

The multi-year project for a new Metra station at New Avenue continues as the village and numerous agencies work together to keep the process moving.

The new station would service Romeoville and surrounding communities in Will County. It will be located on the 135th Street Citgo Refinery property and include a 600-space parking lot. The site on New Avenue would create a Metra stop between Romeoville and Lockport, which transportation officials noted as a need along the Heritage Corridor line. The Romeoville village board recently

passed an agreement with Metra allowing for the operation of a commuter station.

The majority of the project will be funded by outside funds, capitalizing on various grants. In addition, to earlier grants and state funding, Romeoville recently received $435,000 grant, as a part of the Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program. The ITEP is designed to promote and develop alternative transportation options, including bike and pedestrian travel, along with streetscape beautification. The federal funds are awarded competitively, and projects must be related to surface transportation.

Village engineer Jon Zabrocki said the grant will cover sidewalks, bike path connections and lighting, essentially saving the village on their costs and noted the project, due to grants, is well-funded, which is a rarity.

“It’s a good problem to have,” said Mayor John Noak. “This is a great project and pieces are falling

into place; hopefully the State continues to move forward.”

Village Manager Steve Gulden noted as the project moves forward, other expenses may weigh in as typical projects do and the funds from these grants will offer a cushion to help cover any unexpected costs.

Noak agrees there are many variables involved with the project including local, federal and state government, private businesses, the CN Railroad and a list of regional entities. The new station initiative began in 2008, when one of Romeoville’s largest industrial residents, Citgo Petroleum Company, was about to expand and build a new plant. At the time, the village and the company struck a deal.

In exchange for variances that allowed for an additional parking lot to be constructed across from the plant on 135th Street, Citgo offered to lease eight acres of land to the village for a long-sought Metra station.

VVSD diversity, expansion efforts recognized Valley View named to the College Board AP® District Honor Roll For the third time in the past five years, Valley View School District 365U has been named to the College Board AP® District Honor Roll.

While 433 school districts in the United States and Canada earned the honor this year, only 13 districts, including VVSD, were singled out because of their diverse enrollment and the significant number of students from low income families in the district.

To be included on the 2016-17

AP® District Honor Roll, a district must show increases in the number of students participating in Advanced Placement while also maintaining or increasing the percentage of students earning scores of 3 or higher on their AP exams.

According to Trevor Packer, the College Board’s head of AP and Instruction, reaching these goals shows that Valley View is successfully identifying motivated, academically-prepared students who

are ready for AP. “Congratulations to all the teachers and administrators in this district who have worked so tirelessly to both expand access to AP and also to help students succeed on the AP Exams,” Packer said. “Your teachers and administrators are delivering real opportunity in their schools and classrooms, and students are rising to the challenge.”

Inclusion on the 7th Annual AP District Honor Roll is based on a review of three years of AP data, from 2014 to 2016, looking across 37 AP Exams, including world language and culture. Criteria used included: •

Increasing participation/ access to AP by at least 4 percent in large districts, at least 6 percent in medium districts, and at least 11 percent in small districts Maintaining or increasing the percentage of exams taken by black/African American, Hispanic/ Latino, and American Indian/Alaska Native students Maintaining or improving performance levels when comparing the 2016 percentage of students

scoring a 3 or higher to the 2014 percentage.

Under the direction of Superintendent Dr. James A. Mitchem Jr. and his team, VVSD has been committed to expanding the availability of AP courses among prepared and motivated students of all backgrounds for the past five years.

Helping more students learn at a higher level and earn higher AP scores is an objective of all members of the AP community, from AP teachers to district and school administrators to college professors.

In 2016, more than 4,000 colleges and universities around the world received AP scores for college credit, advanced placement, or both, and/or consideration in the admission process.

SALK, WOOD VIEW, HILL PRINCIPALS TO ROTATE POSITIONS NEXT SCHOOL YEAR Three Valley View School District 365U Principals will trade roles for the 2017-18 school year.

R.C. Hill Elementary School Principal Alyson Ewald will become Principal at Jonas Salk Elementary School in Bolingbrook,

Salk Principal Laura Lucas will move to the Principal position at Wood View Elementary School in Bolingbrook and Wood View Principal Jody Ellis will become Principal at R.C. Hill in Romeoville.

“All three Principals are Valley View veterans and have very specific strengths,” said VVSD Principal Dr. James A. Mitchem Jr. “The best way to utilize those strengths is to match them with the climate, culture and programming in these three unique schools.”

Ewald, who taught 4th grade at R.C. Hill for four years and was Assistant Principal for an additional four years, has been Principal at Hill for the past six years.

Lucas, who has been with VVSD since 2003, has been Principal at Salk for two years. She began her VVSD career as an early childhood special education teacher and kindergarten teacher at Pioneer Elementary School before becoming a Reading Specialist at B.J. Ward and Irene King elementary schools. She served as King Assistant Principal for several years.

Ellis came to Wood View three years ago after serving as Assistant Principal and Dean of Students at Humphrey Middle School for five years. She joined VVSD as a 3rd grade teacher at Hermansen Elementary School in 2000.

Giving thanks for the season As CEO of Joliet Area Community Hospice, I’m proud that we are one of only a few hospices in the area that offers a pediatric hospice and palliative care program. Children served are from 0 to 21 and suffer from a variety of life threatening illnesses. Sixteen children have been cared for in our program this past year. Each year our pediatric staff hosts a holiday party for our pediatric families. The party took place Saturday, December 3 at JACH. Our staff chose names of patients and their siblings and purchased gifts for them. Two families whose children died while in our program in past years also donated gifts for our current families.

These gifts are not always typical toys for a child but may be sheets, pajamas

or needed medical supplies. During the party, the children visit stations to decorate cookies and make an ornament.

We appreciate Joliet Junior College photography students who donate their time and talent by taking family portraits. Each family received a framed photo that day and additional photos will be mailed later. F amilies sometimes comment that this is the first family photo they have had in a long time, if ever.

And they share just how relaxing it is to be at a party just for them; not afraid what others might think if their child acts out, needs a feeding tube or needs to be suctioned.

Thank you to Terry D’Arcy, of D’Arcy Buick GMC, for providing the pizza

again this year and Extreme Dancers Dance Studios for providing the entertainment for the second straight year.

Patients in the Joliet Area Community Hospice pediatric program are cared for in their own homes and occasionally in our Hospice Home.

Act Like You’re Sick: Perfect antidote to holiday stress Like a lot of guys, I absolutely hate to admit when I’m getting sick. I take it as a sign of weakness, of mortality. But at some point, around the time I can’t breathe or taste anything, I have to come to terms with myself and admit that I’m not well. And when I do, something amazing happens: I start to take care of myself and eventually feel better.

START BEFORE YOU HAVE TO As long as we ignore all of our body’s warning signs, we remain unhealthy.

But the simple steps of acknowledging the problem and taking some basic actions make all the difference. Removed from denial, we are free to sound the alarms and send all of our reinforcements to put us back together. We allow ourselves to sleep more, eat healthier, take a break from work, and even see the people we care about more often.

The irony is that the acts of a sick person are a foundation for long-term health, both physically and mentally.

The problem is that we don’t usually start them unless there’s already something wrong. Instead of waiting for our bodies and minds to fail, I want to recommend a better approach: Act like you’re sick right now. You will get all the same benefits without the misery of actually being ill.

ors were physical in nature, centered around life-or-death situations. Today, most stress comes from low stakes encounters, such as work and relationship difficulties, or simply trying to survive the holidays.

However, the potential for harm is greater than ever because these kinds of routine events bombard us on a daily basis, and they typically go unnoticed.

The Centers for Disease Control suggests that close to 90 percent of our illnesses are linked to stress, from the common cold to chronic pain. In fact, a good argument can be made that successfully managing stress is the most important task of our adult lives.

Like a rain barrel, our stress accumulates over time. This means that you may be unaware of any harmful effects until the internal barrel spills over. Once it does, you can’t undo the consequences.

A better strategy involves knowing your triggers, the conditions that cause

you the most stress. Some can be avoided, while others can be dealt with better.

Of course some stress is unavoidable – and even helpful – so there’s no use in trying to take advantage of your sick role for too long.

THE GIFT THAT KEEPS GIVING Regardless of your religious affiliation, family history, or shopping preferences, the holiday season inevitably brings with it moments of wonder, as well as a full plate of stress. In the end, no one else will take care of you if you don’t do it for yourself.

This is the mantra of all of the helping professions, from nursing to counseling, yet it is one of the most poorly followed pieces of advice. The result is that a lot of qualified people leave their jobs because they don’t take care of themselves.

If you want to continue experiencing the same results of unmanaged stress – feeling sick, tired, and lacking drive – then keep doing the same thing. But trust me when I say that being stubborn about your health is a punishment that will stay with you long past the new year.

Cooking safety during the holidays If a fire starts in a pan or pot, put a lid on it or slide a cookie sheet over it To keep a cooking fire from ruining your holiday celebration the Plainfield Fire Protection District has the following safety tips for you: Stand by your pan and keep an eye on what you fry.

Stay in the kitchen when cooking on your range or cook-top so you can monitor the food you’re cooking. Most cooking fires are caused by unattended cooking.

When using a turkey fryer always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for safe and proper use. Always use a turkey fryer outdoors but not on a wooden

deck or inside a garage. Use a turkey fryer with thermostat controls to ensure the oil does not become overheated. Thaw your turkey completely, ice on the turkey will cause the hot oil to splatter.

Make sure you don’t overfill the fryer with oil to prevent the hot oil from overflowing when you add the turkey.

Keep children and pets at least 3 feet away from the turkey fryer at all times.

Bolingbrook defeats Romeoville to hold bragging rights in the Valley View School District for this season

At the end of last season it looked like both Bolingbrook and Romeoville had talented players coming back.

And they did.

However, as the offseason progressed, the Spartans lost one of their starters in London Stamps, while the Raiders added key pieces to form a team that is among the state’s elite.

That influx of talent was on hand last week when Bolingbrook defeated Romeoville 84-55 in the Valley View District crossover.

“That was a tough game tonight and we came out early and I thought we were going to give them a fight, but when we started missing layups and they ran out on us a couple times and hit some threes and stretched the lead out, we kind of fell apart,” said Romeoville coach Marc Howard.

We are averaging nearly 80 points a game, but I thought we played for the most part pretty well.”

Nana Akenten paced Bolingbrook with 20 points, while Tyler Cochran added 12 and Kaleb Thornton and Malik Binns had 10 each.

“Nana is averaging 20 points a game and the most he has played in any of our games is two and a laf quarters,” Brost said.

Flyers drop 111 points on Salem International Six different players scored in double-figures as the Lewis University men’s basketball team won its fifth-straight game with the 111-61 victory over Salem International in the final day of QU Subway Holiday Classic - hosted

by Quincy - at the Pepsi Arena on Sunday (Dec. 18).

The 111 points is the most by a Flyer squad in a single game since 2001 and the most in a regulation contest since 1997.

Lewis’ 62 points in the second half and its bench performance of 63 points was enough to beat Salem International alone.

With the win, Lewis improves to 7-4 while Salem International falls to 1-11 on the campaign.

Lewis sophomore swingman Delaney Blaylock (Wyoming, Mich./Godwin Heights) scored a game-high 18 points, while sophomore center Frank Vukaj (Davison, Mich./Davison) and

freshman guard Adam Pischke (Cary, Ill./Marian Central Catholic) each contributed 14 points apiece. Pischke knocked down four three-pointers.

Redshirt freshman guard Jake Reinhart (Bloomington, Ill./ Central Catholic) connected on three trifectas to finish with a career-high 13 points, while senior guard Capel Henshaw (Harrisburg, Ill./Harrisburg) had 11 points, including two threepointers. Lady Raiders off to Florida for break

There are many families that use the Christmas holiday break from school to pack up and head somewhere warm — maybe to visit family or maybe a trip to Disney World — but in any case to relax.

The Bolingbrook girls basketball team will also be heading somewhere warm this break — but for them, it is a business trip.

The Raiders will head to Naples, Fla. for the Naples Holiday Shootout Dec. 28-30.

“We have a little break and we have some time to practice and get ready to go to Florida and hopefully we can compete down there on a big stage,” said Bolingbrook coach Chris Smith.

Smith believes in a philosophy that no matter what the Raiders’ record is at the end of the season, it is better to be battle tested than undefeated,

In fact, the Raiders will enter the Naples tournament with a 9-3 record, with the three losses coming to Illinois powerhouse Montini (52-45), Chicago Public League’s North Lawndale (68-64) and to Oak Ridge High School out of Georgia (54-37) in Tennessee in the Turkey Jamm Shootout.

“The whole goal is to be prepared for February, no matter what you do in the regular season,” Smith said. “Come regionals and sectionals, you want to make a good run.

“To win state you have to beat the best of the best. Whether we play them early or late, we still have to beat them.”

Florida is not the last of the big tests for the Raiders.

“We come back from Florida and we still have to travel to St. Louis to play a team out of Alabama ( Jan. 16) that is really good and we will head to head SEE BREAK PAGE 12

“He is the first kid we have played against were we told our guys he is as good as you are. What I like more about him is that he is a classy kid – a first-class kid – that is really important. I tell our guys that being a good person is a million times more important than the scoreboard. What matters is that we are good human beings and we do what we are supposed to do.”

The Raiders will now head to the Hinsdale Central tournament, leaving the Rich South Big Dipper this season.

“This is really great that we have two weeks off to really break down film and the Hinsdale Central tournament is one of the best in the state and that is why we went there,” Brost said. “We are going to see teams that are as good, if not better than us.”

With the spot vacated by teams like Bolingbrook that left the Dipper, Romeoville joins the Dipper field this season after holding its own invite the past few years.

“It will give us a tough environment and a diverse field. It is a little different this year with teams coming out of Michigan and Indiana and the teams in the state that are good,” Howard said. “We are looking forward to it, It is a new challenge and we believe that we can compete in that and challenge some of those teams over there.

“It doesn’t get any easier for us. We are talented and young, but we told the kids we wanted to put them against a tough nonconference schedule. Either we are going to rise up to the top or we are going to continue to learn some lessons, but I have confidence in my guys.”

PAT DEAR PAT, When the rules of paying off debts from smallest to largest don’t apply, I look at things this way: If you have two debts that are of equal amounts, I would attack the one with the larger interest rate first. In your case, that would be the credit card debt.

County offers winter tips, warming centers Be cognizant of the potential risks posed by wind chill As temperatures plummet and a prolonged deep freeze is anticipated, Will County Executive Larry Walsh encourages residents to follow these tips and utilize local warming centers if necessary.

A complete list of warming shelters is listed on the home page of the Will County Emergency Management Agency’s website at www. willcountyema.org.

Since many of these locations are open upon request, residents should contact the shelter to ensure availability.

“I urge any resident who is in need to use these warming centers around the county,” Walsh said.

“By using these centers and other common sense practices, our residents can protect themselves and their family from the dangers of these harsh temperatures.”

Risks include hypothermia illnesses brought on by exposure to winter winds and cold can be fatal if treatment is lacking. Hypothermia usually occurs when the body temperature drops below 95 de-

Be cognizant of the potential risks posed by wind chill. For example, an air temperature of 20 degrees F feels like -10 F on exposed skin if the wind is blowing at 20 miles per hour.

Frostbite is another concern.

Frostbitten skin is whitish, stiff, and numb, but not necessar-

ily painful. Children may be especially susceptible because they can become so occupied with play that they tend to ignore physical symptoms.

Do not rub frostbitten skin because further friction may increase the damage and slow recovery.

Treat frostbitten skin with warm water for 20-to-40 minutes and seek medical attention immediately.

You should routinely avoid shoveling snow unless you are in good physical condition.

If you find it difficult to breathe while shoveling, quit immediately and go indoors where it’s warm.

Remember that overexertion can cause a heart attack.

Snowmobiling and skating can be great winter activities, but remember to use common sense.

If you plan to skate on a lake or pond, remember that the ice should have a uniform thickness of at least 4 inches and never skate alone.

You should never use a snowmobile on lakes or rivers without knowing the ice conditions.

To be safe, there should be eight inches of clear ice.

Also remember that heavy or drifting snow can obscure fences, tree stumps and uneven ground.
