Tis the season for giving and the Romeoville community was set to help spread a little joy.

For the fifth year, the Fraternal Order of Police coordinated efforts to help families in need do some holiday shopping. Officer John Allen, who spearheaded the event, reported the annual Shop with a Cop event at Walmart, was able to take 43 children out for a shopping spree.

Through donations from the Fraternal Order of Police, Romeoville Emergency Management Agency, Citizens Police Academy and local business owners, the police department was able to make Christmas a little brighter by adding a few presents under the tree.

New dispatch center to go live Center will bring together 31 separate communities including those from Eastcom in Crete, Lincolnway in Frankfort

The first and largest consolidation in the state, Will County’s new 911 Dispatch Center and Emergency Telephone System Board (ETSB) is expected to go live this week.

The center will bring together 31 separate communities including those from Eastcom in Crete, Lincolnway in Frankfort, the Will County Sheriff’s Department and the Romeoville 911 Center.

By centralizing operations under one roof, the move is expected to allow for better coordination and response time to emergencies.

“I’m very proud of the Will Coun-

ty Board for rising to the occasion and working with the ETSB on the mandate they received by the state to consolidate,” said Board Speaker Jim Moustis (R-Frankfort) in a release. “With the Board’s help, 31 communities will now be better served by this one single state-ofthe-art facility.”

Will County and local public safety officials had been grappling with a state mandate that required the county to eliminate half of its six 911 dispatch centers.

The state legislation passed in May 2015 was meant to improve public safety by streamlining operations and potentially reducing the number of call transfers between facilities, or public safety answering

points (PSAPs).

The two other PSAPs include the Joliet 911 dispatch which remained as it was the county’s busiest center; the second PSAP is Wescom – a newly built center with 21 member police and fire agencies primarily on the western side of Will County, including Bolingbrook, Plainfield, Lockport and Crest Hill.

The Will County Board partnered with the Laraway Communication Center to form the third PSAP, the consolidated 911 Dispatch Center which is part of the new Public Safety Complex located at Laraway Road and Route 52.

“With our 911 emergency responder radio systems in a centralized location, Will County

residents can rest assured that no matter the emergency, we have never been more prepared,” said Ray Tuminello (R-New Lenox), Chair of the Capital Improvements Committee.

“Public safety is always the top priority of the Will County Board.”

In addition to housing the 911 Dispatch Center, the Public Safety Complex is one of nine sites housing an entirely new county-wide public safety radio system. The new P25 system uses technology that is interchangeable across agencies, removing the need for costly upgrades when new radios are purchased.

According to information from the center, the new system also allows different departments to communicate more easily with each other regardless of the brand of radio they use. As part of the new

radio system, a new radio tower was also installed at the Public Safety Complex. According to the board, as part of the intergovernmental agreement between Will County and Laraway Communications Center, the county will be responsible for managing employees and maintenance operations at the facility.

The 85,000 square foot Public Safety Complex houses the Sheriff’s Office, 911 Dispatch Center, and Emergency Telephone System Board (ETSB). The new 911 Dispatch Center and ETSB are located on the first level of the new Public Safety Complex. The board noted extra space has been allotted for growth should the need arise. Construction on the Public Safety Complex finished this month, and the building will be officially unveiled to the public in January.

Shane Smith left as well, but he returned alone later that evening and began arguing with his mother. During that dispute, he choked his mother to death, placed her body in a garbage bag and drove her to the Brandon Road Lock.

He dropped her body in the river where it was discovered downstream several days later.

Shane Smith, who threw the jeans he had been wearing during the murder into the river, told his wife what he had done. She made a statement to Joliet police, who recovered the jeans. Investigators also matched DNA from the victim with hair that was found on her driveway near the wheel of her

vehicle.

“Shane Smith is a selfish coward who killed his defenseless mother because he could not abide by her house rules,” said State’s Attorney Glasgow. “The vicious nature of this murder demonstrates the dark depths of this defendant’s depraved heart.”

Smith had prior convictions and served prison time for aggravated robbery in 2000 and an aggravated domestic battery in 20018.

State’s Attorney Glasgow thanked Joliet police for their excellent investigation as well as his prosecutors, Mark Fleszewski, Katheryn Tinich, and Tom Slazyk, who had prepared a strong case for trial.

Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow announces that a Joliet man who choked his mother to death and dumped her body in the Des Plaines River near the Brandon Road Lock and Dam has been sentenced to 32 years in

prison.

Shane Smith, 37, of the 1600 block of Black Road, pleaded guilty to one count of First-Degree Murder in June for killing Joan Smith at her house during an argument on Oct. 13, 2013.

Circuit Judge Carla Alessio Policandriotes handed down the sentence last week.

Smith, who lived with his mother, had been drinking and fishing near the Brandon Road Lock with his wife on the day of the argument. Joan Smith would not allow her son’s wife to live in her house because of frequent arguments between the couple. The dispute with his mother began when Shane Smith attempted to sneak

Former Bolingbrook police officer, Carter Larry will take on the role as Director of Safety and Security for the Valley View School Dis-

trict after the untimely passing of Leroy Brown who brought security at the district to the forefront over his tenure. School Board President Steve Quigley said Larry is a familiar face coming to the district with more than 20 years of police and security experience; and though

he “has big shoes to fill, we believe he is up to the task.”

Larry addressed the school board at a recent meeting first noting how honored and humbled he is to take on the position.

“My goal is simple: I hope to bring the same level of integrity he brought, his level of organizational commitmentment and his humility in order to get things done in the district, I look forward to the challenge and meeting all staff in

the district.”

As a member of the Bolingbrook Police Department, Larry served in a range of roles including a school liaison officer from 1999 through 2007.

According to his bio, Larry left the Bolingbrook Police Department in 2016 to become a security analyst for The Horton Group in Orland Park.

Among his duties were to manage and implement secu-

rity awareness in order to mitigate and manage risks for clients.

After four years serving in the United States Marine Corps, in 1990 Larry advanced earned his bachelor’s degree, and then his masters’ degree from Judson University.

Larry has also served as an assistant girls’ basketball coach at Bolingbrook High School and a volunteer teen discussion leader for Helping-Enriching-AdvisingReaching-Teaching (HEART).

enade Bolingbrook donated lost and found items to United Way of Will County. Every donation, which happens two to three times annually, varies. Items might include unclaimed bicycles, lost bags of brand-new merchandise and children’s and adult clothing

left behind on benches, in bathrooms or in restaurants.

Formed in 1976, United Way of Will County is a nonprofit that assists 46 local agencies in raising funds and helping with the organizational and administrative costs for their health and hu-

man service programs. Its many services include supplementing shelters for the homeless and giving rent, food, hygiene products and utility assistance; providing disaster relief; and distributing meals to low food-access areas of Will County.

Home for the Holidays: Drive Sober, Buckle Up IDOT partnering with law enforcement to ensure safe holiday travel The Illinois Department of Transportation, Illinois State Police and local law enforcement agencies throughout the state are working together to ensure motorists drive sober and buckle up this holiday season. Beginning Dec. 18 through Jan. 2, more than 150 police and sheriff’s departments will step up enforcement efforts to prevent alcohol- and drug-related crashes and fatalities.

“The holidays are a time to celebrate and make memories with family and friends,” said Priscilla Tobias, Director of IDOT’s Office of Program Development. “By driving sober and buckling up, you are not only helping make zero fatalities a reality in Illinois, but also ensuring that this year’s memories are joyful.”

The enforcement campaign will be in effect around the clock, with heightened efforts during nighttime hours. Illinois motorists can expect to encounter DUI, speeding and distracted driving patrols as well as roadside safety checks and seatbelt enforcement zones throughout the state.

The holiday enforcement campaign comes as Illinois experiences its second consecutive year of more than 1,000 motor vehicle fatalities. In 2016, a total of 1,078 people lost their lives in a vehicle crash on Illinois roads; the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that 315

of these individuals died in an alcohol-impaired crash.

“Safe driving habits are essential to reducing fatalities in Illinois,” said Illinois State Police Director Leo P. Schmitz. “The ISP continues to work to remove unsafe drivers from our roadways.

We ask that you do your part to assist us in reducing fatal crashes.

If you see an unsafe driver, please call 911 to report them.”

The Illinois Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over and Click It or Ticket programs are funded with federal highway safety dollars administered by IDOT.

Artists wanted for forest preserve exhibit Jan. 15 is the deadline to apply to be an artist featured in the Forest Preserve District of Will County’s summer “Arts & Nature on the River” event at Four Rivers Environmental Education Center in Channahon.

The event is set for noon-4 p.m. Saturday, June 16, but the artist lineup is being assembled now. The District is looking for 12-20 individuals or small groups from a variety of disciplines.

This year’s theme is “Sharing Landscapes.” Artists may use the natural setting of Four Rivers and the surrounding McKinley Woods – Kerry Sheridan Grove, or any element of nature, to link their art form to the theme. Categories include: exhibits, demonstrations, performances and participatory, or handson, activities.

Interested artists are invited to forward a brief artist bio, description of their work and a representative photo, video or audio file along with their take on the theme to FourRivers@fpdwc.org. Questions can be

Peoria settlement sacked, burned during War of 1812

BY CHRIS KAERGARD Of the Journal Star of Peoria If schoolchildren learn one thing about the War of 1812, it’s that the British marched on and burned Washington, D.C. But Illinois schoolchildren studying the war could also learn about the burning of a settlement in their own territory, one set ablaze by their own countrymen: the village located where Peoria stands today, in a location that had been settled since the late 1600s.

The conflagration there, almost certainly unplanned, gave rise to a half-century-long legal fight and slowed the city’s development.

In the early months of that conflict between the British and Americans, tensions grew in the western territories of the United States, including the Illinois Territory, because of fears that local American Indian tribes were either loyal to the British or being induced to attack American settlers, particularly after such an attack at Fort Dearborn.

Hence the decision by the state’s territorial governor, Ninian Edwards, to send a group of militiamen — some from Missouri — up the Illinois River in November 1812 to check into conditions in the village of fewer than 100 people.

“The Missourians were deeply suspicious of this thriving and peaceful village, unmolested within 10 miles of the main council site for Indian tribes that swarmed Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin and Iowa,” a Journal Star archival piece from 1962 reads.

Capt. Thomas Craig’s men began to sack the town while residents were at Sunday Mass.

“In the face of protests from Thomas Forsythe, an official Indian agent and … the village priest, the property was temporarily returned,” according to another Journal Star historical recounting from 1963. “Harmless shots from across the river, probably by hunters, led Craig to say his boats had been fired upon.

The French denied it, but Craig demanded the attackers be turned over to him. When the villagers protested, Craig sacked the town.

This illustration, created for Peoria’s tricentennial in 1991, showcases the beginning of the peaceful coexistence between settlers and American Indians in the Peoria area of the Illinois River valley. That continued coexistence caused puzzlement and concern among territorial authorities at the start of the War of 1812 and resulted in a military expedition to the village on the site of modern-day Peoria.

Its buildings were burned, cattle killed, the wine vaults raided and villagers were taken prisoner and shipped down river. Belated orders from the governor to belay and free the prisoners finally reached the group, with men, women and children being turned loose with few provisions in freezing weather near modern-day Alton. One of the survivors later became the wife of the state’s fourth governor, John Reynolds, who called out the state’s militia for the Black Hawk War. The burning of the village and the stranding of its members in fact helped turn some local Indians against the American settlers.

The destruction cleared the way for the construction of Fort Clark at the corner of what is now Liberty and Water streets in 1813 as a bulwark against now-hostile Indian tribes. It remained on the site for only a few years until rebuilding of residential properties resumed nearby.

One problem: The displaced residents from 1812 had deeds to the property, dating back to the original French settlements there and began to petition Congress in 1813 to be reimbursed for their lost land. That process continued as Illinois entered its early days of statehood.

“By 1837, when surveys were made, American settlers were occupying these lots — but the sales to these inhabitants were made subject to the French claims,” Ernest E. East writes in an un-

published “History of Peoria” volume, as later recounted by local historian Bill Adams.

Some 32 former residents or their heirs subsequently filed claims on 70 lots — some of which devolved into lawsuits in county court or federal court. A piece by the Peoria Historical Society explains: “But the legal process moved very slowly, which in turn slowed the development of downtown Peoria. As a lawyer, Abraham Lincoln worked on some of these cases in the 1850s. Eventually, the displaced settlers were paid thousands of dollars in reparations for the loss of their homes.”

A handful of those cases first had to go to the state Supreme Court, and one to the U.S. Supreme Court, the latter with Lincoln as one of the attorneys involved. The litigation ended when real estate baron Charles Balance finally bought out the remaining claims on eight lots for $31,000 in 1867 — about $500,000 in today’s funds.

The near capacity crowd at Romeoville High School Wednesday night got exactly what it wanted to see for the first half of the Valley View showdown between Bolingbrook and Romeoville.

The second half, however, was all Raiders as the Brook used pressure defense and a big run to climb out to a 15-point lead and all-but put the game away.

“We thought we could wear them down by the second half and that is exactly what happened. We thought we could really get after them for 32 minutes and it didn’t really happen until the third quarter, but once it started to happen, it happened in a big way,” said Bolingbrook coach Rob Brost. “I

told our guys we didn’t play very well in the first half and we were still up one, on the road, against a pretty good team. That was the good news, the better news was the third quarter.”

The Raiders were led by 19 points each from Kaleb Thornton and Tyler Cochran, who suffered an ankle injury against Lockport.

Cochran didn’t start, but came off the bench and aided the win.

“Everybody worked together and we tuned up the pressure.

We tuned everything out and just played basketball.

This was a big game and we just wanted to come out and perform.

If we play in the system and play right, we will win and that is what we did in the second half. We played Bolingbrook style of basketball.

“This is our sixth game and we have had five guys lead us in scoring. Our guards can really come at you in wave. Today when we were making our run, we were all guards. We wanted to bring Donita Johnson out away from the basket. We have some options as how to play.”

Romeoville was paced by Joliet West transfer Eddie Creal’s 16 points, Johnson had 11.

“I thought we played them pretty even the first two quarters and I thought we played them again after the catastrophe in the third, but we spotted them a good 11 or 12 points because we had so many turnovers and they were getting layups,” said Romeoville coach Marc Howard.

“You can’t let a good team like that speed you up and have you throwing the ball all over the place. Credit to Bolingbrook, they did a good job applying that pressure and we just have to learn from it.

“We have to take a lot from this game. The good thing is, it is the mid part of December and we still have a lot of basketball to be played. We will come back and work on the weaknesses that we had and see if we can get better.”

Romeoville has tough games coming up as the Spartans will

play over the break in the Rich South Big Dipper Tournament and will travel to Joliet West Dec. 21 for a game that is sure to have a lot of emotion as Creal faces his former team.

Bolingbrook will travel to Cedar Falls, Iowa to play in the Jerry Slykhuis Showcase against some of the top teams in the Hawkeye State.

“One of the things last year, we really didn’t play anyone who really challenged us until Simeon (at state). We had some close games and games where we didn’t play well, but (against Simeon) we didn’t really react well when we got down,” Brost said. “So, I wanted to ramp up the schedule and Romeoville being really good helped us with that and going to Iowa and we play Morgan Park in January and the Hinsdale Central tournament is one of the top ones. And in in our conference, Homewood-Flossmoor is very good and Lincoln-Way East, then we play Joliet West and Joliet Central and they are very good, so our schedule is rough.”

That doesn’t mean a win over a district rival wasn’t a big one.

“I am proud of our guys, I am proud of how they carry themselves and I am proud of how we do things at our school and we hold our boys accountable on and off the floor and I am proud of how they played tonight,” Brost said. “But now this is over and we go on to the next thing, because that is what teams of our caliber do.”

Flyers roll past University of St. Francis The Lewis University men’s basketball team exploded to a 34-3 lead and never looked back, defeating St. Francis 7741 Thursday (Dec. 14) at the Sullivan Center.

The Flyers (4-6) scored the first nine points of the game and then went on runs of 11-0 and 14-0 to build their lead.

They held the Fighting Saints (4-7) to one made field goal in the first 14 minutes of the game.

It was a 38-17 lead for the Flyers at the half and they lead by as many as 42 points, 68-26, with 6:08 left in the game.

Josh Niego (Chicago, Ill./ Brother Rice) and Jake Reinhart (Bloomington, Ill./Central Catholic) scored 11 points each to lead the Flyers, while Donovan Oliver (Kewanee, Ill./ Kewanee) and Delaney Blaylock (Wyoming, Mich./Godwin Heights) scored 10 points apiece.

Adam Pischke (Cary, Ill./Marian Central Catholic) scored nine points, Frank Vukaj (Davison, Mich./Davison) had eight points and Cristen Wilson (Cleveland, Ohio/John Hay) tallied seven points and seven rebounds.

Lewis shot 52.8 percent (28-of53) for the game, while limiting St. Francis to 26.8 percent (11for-41) shooting. Lewis also went 11-for-22 from beyond the arc.

The Flyers outrebounded the Fighting Saints 37-28 and forced 19 turnovers.

Lewis University then fell to No. 5 ranked Ferris State 94-68 Dec. 18 in a nonconference game at Godwin Heights High School.

The Flyers (4-7) fell behind 23-12 midway through the first half before cutting the deficit to three points at 27-24 on a pair of free throws by Cristen Wilson (Cleveland, Ohio/John Hay) with 7:08 left in the first half.

The Bulldogs (13-1) responded to take a 41-30 lead heading into the break.

A jumper by Brandon McCombs (Jacksonville, Ill./ Jacksonville) got the Flyers to within nine points at 63-54 with 9:32 remaining, but they would get no closer the remainder of the game.

Wilson had 15 points and eight rebounds to lead Lewis.

Adam Pischke (Cary, Ill./Marian Central Catholic) scored 14 points and dished out five assists, Frank Vukaj (Davison, Mich./Davison) had 13 points and Delaney Blaylock (Wyoming, Mich./Godwin Heights) added 11 points, 10 rebounds and five assists in his return to his hometown.

Lewis shot 40.3 percent (27of-67) from the field, while Ferris State went 50.8 percent (32-of63).

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL Jessica Kelliher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) scored 31 points as the Lewis University women’s basketball team defeated Eckerd 86-82 Sunday (Dec. 17) in a nonconference game at the McArthur Center.

Kelliher shot 14-of-20 from the field and went 3-for-3 from the free-throw line. She also added six rebounds, five assists and two steals.

Rachel Hinders (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) added 18 points, including a 10-for-10 performance at the foul line, while Gabby Green (Milwaukee, Wis./Pius XI) totaled 13 points, six assists and five steals.

The Flyers (8-4) shot 61.1 percent (33-of-54) from the field, while Eckerd (9-2) went 28-of-64 (43.8%).

Lewis racked up 18 assists and 10 steals in the contest.

The Tritons jumped out to a 16-8 lead midway through the first quarter, but Lewis rallied to tie the game at 24-24 after one quarter.

A 17-2 Lewis run in the second quarter gave it a 51-36 lead with 1:19 left in the first half and it led 51-39 at the half.

Lewis maintained at least a six point lead throughout the third quarter and led 68-59 after three periods.

A Kelliher layup pushed the lead back up to 14 at 73-59 early in the fourth quarter before Eckerd cut the deficit to one point at 80-79 with 1:01 left in the game.

Four free throws from Hinders and a layup by Green were able to put the game away for the Flyers.

VOLLEYBALL Lewis University women’s volleyball player Maddie Seliga (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall) finished off her career strong, topping the 1,000 dig and 1,000 kill mark in the final weeks of the season.

Conference championship match against Rockhurst on Nov. 19, Seliga broke the 1,000 dig plateau, finishing her career with 1,043 digs after recording 314 this year.

Then in the NCAA Midwest Regional final against Rockhurst on Dec. 2, Seliga passed the 1,000 kill mark, concluding her career with 1,006 kills after recording 310 in 2017.

“Maddie is such an awesome

individual,” Lewis head women’s volleyball coach Lorelee Smith said. “She really earned this.”

Seliga was named to the NCAA Midwest Regional AllTournament Team in each of the past two years.

She was named to the NCAA Championship All-Tournament Team and was a First Team AllGLVC selection last year and a Second Team All-GLVC pick this year.

Getting debt-free Collectors are looking to get as much as they can on a bad, late debt

DEAR DAVE, I just accepted a new job that will pay me $30,000 a year more than my old position. I’ve got about $55,000 in debt I’ve been working hard to pay off, and I know now I need to adjust my

budget. Do you have any advice?

MITCH DEAR MITCH, The first thing I’d say is don’t go crazy on any big-ticket items while you’re paying off debt. Keep it simple, and go out to celebrate with a nice dinner after you get your first paycheck. Remember, the more you put toward debt, the faster it goes away.

For the time being, I want you to remain passionate about getting out of debt. Your thought process needs to be, “Wow, I got a new job making more money. I can get out of debt even quicker!”

Again, I’m okay with you adjusting a bit that first month

and having a little fun to celebrate your good fortune. But after that, I want you to turn around and attack that debt with even more intensity than before. Then, once you’re out of debt, you can celebrate that with something a lot nicer.

Does that include debit cards, too?

SUE DEAR SUE, Yes, it does! Collectors are looking to get as much as they can on a bad, late debt. I’ve seen numerous situations where collectors have taken more than the agreed-upon amount from someone’s account once they

gained access. To be fair, the collection business does have a few good people in it. But it also has those who will lie and make threats.

If you’re doing something like scheduling utility payments to come through your debit card or out of your personal checking account, that’s perfectly fine. But there are much safer ways to handle situations with debt collectors.

You can send a money order overnight, or wire the cash to them.

You can also send a cashier’s check. Some folks have even used pre-paid debit cards that aren’t attached to any of their accounts.

The pre-paid debit card isn’t my favorite way to handle these things, but it’s a lot better than giving a dishonest collector the opportunity to really mess you up!
