Auction raises funds for March of Dimes

March of Dimes Suburban Signature Chefs’ Event continues success

BY BUGLE STAFF The Annual March of Dimes Suburban Signature Chefs’ Event continues its success, supporting the organization and one local Romeoville family who know first hand, the need for advocacy in premature birth and health issues.

The Nov. 17 event at the Bolingbrook Golf Club raised more than $120,000 to support research.

Each year the March of Dimes selects an Ambassador, child whose life was saved by their research, programs or educational campaigns.

As a living symbol of the March of Dimes mission to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant

mortality, the Ambassador plays a vital role in the efforts to personalize the mission and to communicate how much of a direct impact donors have on the lives of babies and their families.

The Gutierrez family of Romeoville was honored as the event’s Ambassador Family. Their son Alexis was born early at 32 weeks and spent 26 days in the NICU at Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital.

The event boasted the area’s finest culinary talent while supporting March of Dimes research, education, advocacy and programs that help more moms have full-term pregnancies and healthy babies.

1st grade teacher Melissa Hilliard honored by University of St. Francis Independence Elementary School 1st grade teacher Melissa Hilliard has been featured in the Adjunct Newsletter of the University of St. Francis for her efforts to get her students thinking about college.

The USF alum and master’s degree candidate reached out to individuals involved in the Regional Educational Academy for Leadership (REAL) and the College of Education Advanced Program to ask if they would consider adopting her class.

“We really try to get students to believe that they can go to college and succeed,” Hilliard is quoted as saying. “I am trying to get my first graders, who are 58 percent high risk in a school with a 75 percent poverty rate, to understand that no matter what, they can go to college and be successful.”

Often called the invisible killer, carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless gas created when fuels (such as gasoline, wood, coal, natural gas, propane, oil, and methane) burn incompletely.

In the home, heating and cooking equipment that burn fuel can be sources of carbon monoxide.

DuPage Township receives numerous awards Awards received during 2016 Township of Illinois Conference

BY BUGLE STAFF Working diligently to assist the community in multiple avenues, DuPage Township was recently recognized for its efforts.

DuPage Township received three awards at the 2016 Township of Illinois Conference, including the Youth Department of the Year, Youth Volunteer of the Year, and Best Publication for the Mighty Message Competition.

DuPage Township’s Youth Department offers educational and recreational programs that provide guidance, direction, and encourage healthy life shaping decisions in the community’s youth.

The goal of the department is to provide the youth with fun programs—such as Summer Bridge, Tee it Up for Kids, and S.T.A.R.S. program.

The programs aim to build self esteem and self confidence, offer prevention services, help increase safety awareness, and facilitate

teamwork, leadership, and social skills in the children involved. ryant Norton, a 15-year old DuPage Township Youth Department volunteer, also received honors for being the Youth Volunteer of the Year.

DuPage Township also won Best Publication, for their “Can’t Stop the Feeling” video, inspired by Justin Timberlake’s song of the summer.

Supervisor Bill Mayer, with help from DuPage Township trustees, made his karaoke debut in the award-winning video. The video included snapshots from every department at DuPage Township, including the Food Pantry, Assessor, Senior Services, Youth Department, and office staff.

It also highlighted various programs put on by DuPage Township including Meals on Wheels, Thanksgiving Turkey Drive, Family Fun Fest, and the 7th Heaven Police Benevolent Society Fundraiser.

The annual Mighty Message Awards were awarded at the Township Officials of Illinois’ 2016 Educational Convention in Springfield Illinois.

The awards seek to highlight top performing townships in Illinois.

“I am very proud of the team here at DuPage Township,” said Mayer.

“The DuPage Township Youth Department is one of the things that makes our community great! We couldn’t make this sort of impact without the trustees, staff, and volunteers. We are honored to continually serve our Township residents in Bolingbrook, Romeoville, and Naperville.”

The Township Officials of Illinois serves Illinois’ 1,431 townships, offering information on proper government procedures and in support of strong township government.

TOI sponsors educational meetings for township officials, and is proactive with township-related legislation in the Illinois General Assembly and U.S. Capitol.

District staff, programs gives back to community Community food drive runs in conjunction with their “Harvest Meet” Throughout November, Bolingbrook Park District ramped up its efforts to assist the less fortunate. Between the gymnastics, dance, fitness, special recreation and preschool departments, Bolingbrook Park District will make a major impact this holiday season.

“I am always proud of our staff at Bolingbrook Park District, especially when their focus is giving back to our community. There are

people in need in Bolingbrook and our surrounding communities,” said executive director, Ron Oestreich. “It is no surprise that my team cares so much about helping others. We are really good at what we do, but we are at our best when we are making a difference in people’s lives.”

Most recently, Lily Cache Special Recreation Association (LCSRA) collected 142 pounds of hard items, 348 pounds of books and 1,682 of soft items during their annual Donation Drive. The total was more than double what was collected in the previous drive. Items donated will help the Epilepsy Foundation, which will receive funds and items

will be sold in Savers stores. Donations that cannot be used will be sent to 3rd world countries including Haiti and other countries affected by hurricanes.

The gymnastics program’s food drive runs in conjunction with their “Harvest Meet” and nonperishable foods collected are donated to agencies that assist those in need.

LifeStyles Fitness Center hosts a food drive through November.

Members donate non-perishable food items leading up to the annual “Turkey Burner Workouts,” when the facility opens on Thanksgiving day and offer free group exercise workouts are offered.

BOLINGBROOK UPS STORE SERVING AS TRAINING GROUND FOR VVSD STUDENT Kevin Jansen “is really good at the job.”

That’s what Kalysha Lackings said about her newest intern at the UPS Store at 1112 W. Boughton in Bolingbrook.

Kevin, a student in the Valley View Secondary Transition Experience Program (S.T.E.P.), started his Vocational Training Program job more than a month ago, and both parties are delighted with the way he has performed.

“It’s hard, but I can figure things out pretty easily,” said Kevin, who can be found at the cash register between 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

“Kevin came at the right time, especially when the holiday season kicks in when we can use the extra help. He takes the load off us,” said Lackings, who manages the UPS Store that is owned by Bolingbrook High School Dean Arlene Lackings and her husband, Walter. “He picks up everything really quickly.”

S.T.E.P Transition Specialist Kelly Walsh is excited to have the UPS Store join a group of more than a half dozen local companies that participate in the Vocational Training Program.

“It means a lot to our students because they get to work with customers in a real life situation and not just on campus,” Walsh said.

“It gets them ready for the next step when they will have paid employment.”

“We’re proud of what Kevin is doing,” added S.T.E.P. job coach Dom Pizzuto. “It’s our goal to set him up

for success. We try to let him do as much as he can on his own. Every day is a new challenge for him.”

Walsh praised Lacking for her efforts in working with Kevin, pointing out that the store manager actually had an entire lesson plan laid out with all of the different tasks he could do before the young man even showed up for the first day of work.

“That’s amazing,” Walsh said.

“We’ve never seen a business so ready to roll.”

“It’s not easy getting work experience. This is a good teaching environment for Kevin,” Lackings said.

“Actually, it’s a benefit for both of us.

I’ve learned how to train better and more efficiently too.”

Lacking highly recommends participating in the Vocational Training Program.

“There’s really no reason not to,” she said. “There’s nothing greater than helping somebody out.”

Be informed when choosing health insurance plan It’s possible a bronze policy and maybe a silver one could end up costing more than a gold one with a higher premium THINKING ABOUT HEALTH

BY TRUDY LIEBERMAN, RURAL HEALTH NEWS SERVICE Even though the election is over and Republicans are in a position to repeal and replace Obamacare as they’ve been vowing to do for several years, that doesn’t mean you should avoid signing up for 2017 insurance coverage.

If you’re eligible and need insurance, the state shopping exchanges are open for business even if options this year are limited in many counties, particularly in rural areas. More than 40 percent of the counties where residents can buy an Obamacare policy have just one insurer selling them. That’s not a lot of choice, and policies that are offered are likely to have high premiums and limited options for doctors and hospitals.

Still, some careful shopping is in order to minimize any surprise bills. After the election, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest urged Americans to sign up and announced “the vast majority” of eligible consumers would be able to buy insurance for a monthly premium of $75 or less, which has been the administration’s sales pitch.

Assuming the White House math is correct, that doesn’t mean the vast majority should automatically buy a policy with a $75 premium. That strategy can mean expensive trouble later on. Reviewing the basics before wading into the Obamacare marketplace this year is essential.

For starters, recall that platinum policies, generally the most costly, cover 90 percent of someone’s medical costs; gold plans cover 80 percent; silver plans pay 70 percent; and the bronze variety pays the least—only 60 percent of a patient’s healthcare expenses. Silver plans have been the most popular, largely because those who buy them and have family incomes below $60,750 get extra government subsidies to help pay their

Bronze policies are popular, too, because they have low premiums, but people buying those policies won’t get the extra subsidies, a point that’s worth remembering. Those subsidies can be a big help if you need a lot of medical services. Both bronze and silver policies generally come with lower monthly premiums, but that doesn’t mean they are cheaper in the long run.

Here’s where comparison-shopping gets tricky. It’s possible a bronze policy and maybe a silver one could end up costing more than a gold one with a higher premium if you get sick. That’s because of the relationship between the premium, copays, coinsurance and deductibles. Insurers mix and match these features to fit their marketing strategy.

In general, a lower premium means higher deductibles and higher other out-of-pocket expenses. A policy with a higher premium often means lower out-of-pocket costs.

For 2017 the maximum amount a family would have to pay out-of-pocket for copays, coinsurance and deductibles is $14,300. That’s a lot of money and enough to deter some people from

signing up. Many people say paying that much before insurance pays isn’t really insurance. It’s also high enough to keep people from seeking medical care even when they need it. If people go to the doctor less, the country’s national health expenditures will drop— at least that’s the rationale for the high out-of-pocket limit.

An Indiana couple I’ve written about before in this column recently sent an email updating me on the family’s insurance options for next year. Their carrier had increased their $836 monthly premium to about $1,300; their cost even after an Obamacare tax subsidy was applied. What’s more, the reader said, the insurer had raised the amount of coinsurance for hospitalizations from 20 percent to 50 percent.

Given how much a hospital stay costs, they worried they’d be on the hook for a lot of money until they reached the $14,300 out-of-pocket maximum. It was a risk they weren’t willing to take, and they shopped until they found new coverage for only $700 a month with their subsidy.

Choosing an Obamacare policy or any other insurance coverage comes down to how much risk you want to assume. If you are reasonably certain you won’t need many medical services, you may want to take a chance and buy less expensive insurance that comes with high deductibles, copays, and coinsurance.

But if you’re like the Indiana couple, and afraid of high expenses for unexpected medical care, buy the best policy you can afford that reduces that risk.

Another thing to keep in mind! Beware of policies with really low premiums, prices that seem too good to be true. Consumers who bought insurance from the Obamacare co-ops learned that.

Almost all of the 23 co-ops authorized to compete with the big carriers have gone out of business. They priced their policies too low, and too many sick people signed up. Government regulators closed them down, sending thousands of people scrambling for new coverage—an unwelcome chore for anyone.

Anthony Malone, 20, of Bolingbrook, was charged Nov. 3 with an in-state warrant on the 100 block of Lily Cache Ln. at 10:05 a.m.

Robert Riley, 29, of Bolingbrook, was charged Nov. 3 with an instate warrant at 3:13 pm.

Francisco Galindo-Romero, 28, of Bolingbrook, was charged Nov. 4 with an in-state warrant on the 100 block of Edgehill at 12:59 a.m.

Officers were called Nov. 4 to the area of Flagstaff Dr. and Buckeye Dr. for the report of a suspicious vehicle. A 17-yearold was charged with curfew violation and Carlos Perez, 18, of Aurora, was charged with resisting a peace officer.

Officers responded Nov. 4 to the 200 block of Lincolnshire Ln., for the report of a residential burglary and motor vehicle theft. $100 cash and vehicle keys were removed from the residence and a vehicle that contained a laptop computer was taken from the driveway between 12:30 and 7:15 a.m.

Twenty-four spools of copper wiring valued at $10,000.00 were removed from a construction site at the 100 block of Remington Blvd. between Nov. 4 5:30 p.m and 8 a.m.

Officers were called to the area of lot U Fernwood Dr. Nov. 4 for a reckless discharge of a firearm call after a spent bullet was recovered in a bathroom sink at 4:15 p.m.

Two iPhone 6 cellphones were stolen Nov. 4 from backpacks near the basketball courts in the Park District between 4:306:15 p.m.

Officers responded Nov. 5 to the 300 block of Lancelot Way for the report of a stolen motor vehicle and residential burglary.

Over $2000.00 in power tools were removed from the garage between 12-7:30 a.m.

Officers responded Nov. 5 to the 300 block of Falcon Ridge Way for the report of a residential burglary in which $1500 in tools were removed from an attached garage between 12-8 a.m.

A blue tooth speaker, a socket tool set and a set of jumper cables were burglarized Nov. 5 from a vehicle on the 300 block of Stafford Ct. at 1:05 pm.

Officers responded Nov. 5 to the 300 block of Stafford Ct. for a criminal trespass to vehicle complaint; no proceeds were taken at 1:35 p.m.

Officers responded Nov. 6 to Kohl’s at 1138 W. Boughton Rd. after two suspects concealed and exited with $285 worth of merchandise at 8:55 p.m.

Two credit cards were taken Nov. 6 from a vehicle in a business parking lot on the 300 block of Gibraltar Dr. between 1:15-3:30 p.m.

Between graduation and transfer, there was a lot of attrition for the Romeoville girls basketball team over the summer.

But the cupboard is far from bare between the returners and an influx of younger players.

“We lost a lot of starters,” Romeoville coach Julio Carrasco said. “The good thing is we had a nice class of freshmen come in. It is going to take some time for them to learn, but I thought they’ve played well and have stepped up. The younger girls are doing a nice job and now it is meshing with the older girls.”

One player who did return is four-year varsity point guard Lexi Marin.

“It feels pretty good,” Marin said of being the leader. “I like that we are younger. It is a good building system. I’m glad I get to be the one to help them out and they can carry it on. I feel like we are really talented and can prove

a lot of people wrong this year.”

But while being the lone returning starter, she will also be the focal point for opponents and will need others to step up.

“The other girls are going to have to be able to attack the hoop,” Carrasco said. “Other teams are going to realize Lexi is the focal point of the offense and they are going to stop her.

Someone else is going to have to step up.”

With the roster transition, it will take time for the players to mesh together and for the younger players to get used to the varsity game.

“We need to work on our composure,” Carrasco said. “We can’t force shots. We need the underclassmen to step up and for the upperclassmen to trust them.”

“We need to work as a team,” Marin said. “I have to give them good advise and never put them down. They will get there and it will take time. I think it will SEE SPARTANS PAGE 15

All-Area football team announced

After missing most of the last two seasons to injury, Maine South quarterback Nick Leongas was told by some close to him that football may not be the best sport for him going forward.

After all, he missed his entire sophomore campaign with a torn meniscus in his knee – which he reinjured that winter in basketball – and last season was lost after week two when a hit in the game against Loyola broke his jaw in two places.

“The [injuries] really took a hit on me emotionally to watch all my friends go out last year and play without me. A lot of people were telling me to stop playing football and keep my body safe, but this team meant way too much to me,” Leongas said. “We wanted [a state championship] since we were little kids, since we

watched the teams then win it.”

Not only did Leongas come back, he led the Hawks to the Class 8A state title with a win over Loyola last weekend at the University of Illinois’ Memorial Stadium.

“This is the greatest feeling in the world. I can’t think of another feeling that surpasses this,” he said after the win.

On the season, the senior completed 166-of-267 passes for 2,871 yards and 28 touchdowns. He also carried the ball 163 times for an additional 1,116 yards and 11 scores.

His numbers and leadership earned Leongas the Voyager Media 2016 Offensive Player of the Year.

“The best thing he does is uses his head,” Maine South coach Dave Inserra said of his quarterback. “He makes unbelievable decisions within the play and is unbelievable at just keeping guys calm on the field. He is not a big

rah rah guy – he can at times, but usually he has a cool, calm demeanor and that is what you need in your quarterback and he played that to a tee all year long and just kept this team moving.”

While Leongas understands what he meant to the team, he also understands what his offensive line meant to him – keeping him healthy all season.

“Our offensive linemen stepped up big time,” Leongas said. “Kevin [Jarvis] was a big part of all of our wins, but guys like Danny O’Malley, Jack Farragher, James Hynes and Sean McNulty, who hasn’t played offensive line since freshman year. They came up huge and they deserve the MVP of everything.”

On the defensive side of the ball, the 2016 Voyager Media Defensive Player of the Year also goes to a member of a state finalist, but this one comes from the 7A game.

While no Plainfield North defender posted gaudy numbers

this season because the team played so well as a unit, it was senior linebacker JJ Frey that earns his place atop the all-area list.

On the season, Frey posted 109 tackles to go with 12 tackles for loss, two sacks, two pass breakups and one interception for a unit that allowed only 10 points per game.

In the state finals against East St. Louis – a team everyone said would be too fast for North – Frey led the way with seven solo stops, helping the defense allow only 20 points. The scoreboard read 2613, but six of the Flyers’ points were on an interception return.

“Watching film, I knew I could read a gap and just go for it,” Frey said. “It was a state title game and I just had to go.”

Overall, Frey gives credit for his play to the defensive line, which he says allowed him to play the way he needed to.

“Ari (Ekowa) was all state and Tim Donnahue had [a lot of]

sacks as a junior and a lot of times teams had to scheme for them,” Frey said. “I had a lot of opportunities to make a lot of plays and I was able to.”

North coach Tim Kane had Frey making plays for the Tigers for three years.

“He has been a three year starter for us and we maybe could have moved him up as a freshman, he is that type of player,” Kane said.

“He is a mature kid and he works so hard and is such a serious kid about football. He loves the game and plays so hard every down and just leads by example. He studies the opponent and knows what to do. He is a smart kid, but is a tough, hard-nosed kid and he loves to hit. Because he wears No. 54 and not No. 2, people don’t realize how fast he is. He can plug a lead play inside, but he can also get outside and make a play or cover a kid out of the backfield.

“He is the unquestioned leader of our team, and quite frankly is the best leader I’ve come across in 15 years of coaching,” said South coach Bill Bicker. “He makes plays from sideline to sideline and also plays fullback for us on offense.”

Played a Jabrill Peppers role for the Steelmen this season. He led team in rushing (44 carries for 407 yards and four touchdowns) and receiving (47 catches, 407 yards, 3TD) As a defensive back, he tallied 22 tackles and two interceptions, taking one back for a touchdown. Of 15 kickoff returns, McNair tallied 339 yards (22.6 average), including a 100-yards touchdown.

All state defensive lineman tallied 49 tackles on the season, including nine sacks, 8.5 tackles for loss, forced one fumble and had a pair of pass break-ups. He also played on the offensive line for the Class 7A state runners up.

Wide receiver caught 47 passes for 783 yards and seven touchdowns. He also played defensive back for the Class 8A champion Hawks.

Junior wide receiver was named to the first team all-Southwest Prairie Conference team after posting 48 catches for 612 yards and six touchdowns.

Tiger back carried the ball 230 times on the season for 1,692 yards and 26 TD. He also posted 201 receiving yards and four scores.

Maybe the single biggest weapon for the Class 8A champions, McNulty is a nationally ranked kicker making 14-of-18 field goals. He pinned Loyola inside the 20 four times punting in the state title game and averaged more than 35 yards per punt on the season with a long of 70 yards.

Jarvis made an impact on defense the last part of the season.

Junior quarterback paced the Tigers and led the team to the Class 7A state finals. On the season he completed 151-of-259 passes for 1,998 yards and 21 touchdowns. He also rushed 39 times for 279 yards and a pair of scores.

The Northern Illinois University-bound running back rushed for 1,402 yards and 16 scores on the season, breaking all of the Romeoville records for season and career rushing.

Wide receiver caught 60 passes for 822 yards, while gaining an additional 603 yards on 85 carries.

JULIUS GARRETT JOLIET WEST Senior defensive end and linebacker for the Tigers posted 58 tackles, including 17 solo to go along with six sacks. He was named to the all-SPC first team.

TY GAVIN NOTRE DAME Sophomore running back led the East Suburban Catholic Conference in scoring. He tallied 901 yards rushing on 166 carries and 13 scores, adding nine catches for 77 yards and score. He also completed one pass on the season, which went for a touchdown.

THOMAS HACKETT NOTRE DAME Senior middle linebacker posted 115 tackles on defense and 12 tackles for loss. Hackett forced five fumbles and recovered three, while breaking up four passes.

The talented running back carried the ball 188 times for 1,464 yards, with 21 touchdowns. He also posted 36 catches for 588 yards and four scores.

On special teams, he had eight kick returns for 187 yards.

ALEC MCEACHERN BENET Redwing posted 94 tackles, 34 solo,, on the season. He tallied 14 tackles for loss, including four interceptions along with four interceptions, forced two fumbles and recovered one.

Johnson leads Lewis women to win Lewis University redshirt senior Jamie Johnson (South Holland, Ill./Marian Catholic) and sophomore forward Jessica Kelliher (Waukesha, Wis./ Waukesha North) combined for 53 points as the No. 20 Flyer women’s basketball team rallied from a 10-point, 2nd quarter deficit to claim the 82-57 regional victory over Ferris State at Jim Wink Arena on Sunday (Nov. 27) afternoon.

Johnson finished with a gamehigh 27 points, including 19 points and five three-pointers in the second half, while Kelliher collected 26 points and nine re-

bounds on 12-for-18 shooting.

Johnson added a game-high five assists for Lewis, as the Flyers had 25 helpers on their 34 baskets.

The Flyers also received 10 points off the bench from freshman forward Rachel Hinders (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston).

With the victory, Lewis improves its winning streak to five games and its record to 6-1 on the campaign, while the host Bulldogs drop to 0-5 on the campaign.

Lewis shot 50.7% (34-for-67) from the field, while Ferris State knocked down 40.0% (20-for-50)

of its shots. The Flyers scored more points in the fourth quarter (27) than the Bulldogs did in the entire second half (24).

• The Great Lakes Valley Conference announced Nov. 28 that Johnson has been named the GLVC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the period ending November 27.

This is the second-straight week that a Lewis player has won the award with sophomore forward Jessica Kelliher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) claiming the honors last Monday.

“Jamie had a phenomenal

week scoring the ball,” Gillespie said. “She is really starting to find her niche within our offense and continues to make everyone around her better.”

Johnson played a crucial role in helping the Flyers to a pair of regional victories last week, averaging 25.5 points-per-game, while shooting 53.8% (7-for13) from three-point range and 52.8% (19-for-36) from the field.

Her most impressive performance was a 27-point outing - that including 19 points and five three-pointers in the second half - in an 82-57 regional road victory over Ferris State on Sun-

day (Nov. 27).

For the season, Johnson is averaging a team-best 19 pointsper-game and is shooting 45.7% (21-for-46) from three-point range.

• Lewis University head men’s basketball coach Scott Trost announced that he has signed forward Brandon McCombs (Jacksonville, Ill./Jacksonville) and guard Marco Pettinato (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way West) to National Letters of Intent to play for the Flyers beginning with the 2017-18 campaign.

“Both (Brandon and Marco) are outstanding young men and tremendous student-athletes,” Trost said. “They each come from quality programs and typify the type of players that we have had in the past that were so crucial to our success.”

McCombs, a 6-foot-7, 225-pound power forward, is a three-year varsity letterwinner for Jacksonville.

As a junior, McCombs averaged 15.7 points and 7.6 rebounds-per-game on his way to Central State 8 All-Conference accolades in 2016.

“Brandon can play facing the basket or with his back to the basket,” Trost said. “He brings a tremendous work ethic and toughness and I believe he can be an outstanding player in the GLVC.” Pettinato, a 6-foot-2, 195-pound combo guard, is a four-year varsity starter for Lincoln-Way West. In 2016, he averaged 20.1 points and 5.4 rebounds-per-game as the Warriors placed second overall in the IHSA 3A State Finals. For his efforts, Pettinato was named The Herald News Player of the Year and earned Illinois Basketball Coaches Association (IBCA)

All-State Second Team accolades.

“Marco is a winner who makes game-winning plays when they need to be made,” Trost said.

The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced on Monday (Nov. 21) that Lewis University Dora Andrejszki (Budapest, Hungary/Dozsa Gyorgy) and Nora Mindiyarova (Moscow, Russia/Gimnasium 1577) are ranked third in the country in the 2015-16 Oracle/ITA Collegiate Women’s Tennis Division II Fall National Rankings.

The Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced Monday, November 21 the National Rankings for Men’s Tennis Division II Fall Doubles.

The Lewis University men’s tennis pair of Alan Braschinsky (Tallinn, Estonia/Milna Harma) and Mate Srdanovic (Split, Croatia/Graditeljsko-Geodetska Tehnicka) found themselves ranked 22nd nationally and third in the Midwest region The men’s tennis team came in ranked 46th overall nationally and seventh overall within the Midwest region.

Braschinsky was ranked sixth regionally as an individual while Srdanovic was ranked ninth.

While the Spartans have some experience in the backcourt with Marin and Brittany Osborne, the front court is new after the loss of both posts from last year, including six-foot junior Jahari Smith, who transferred to rival Bolingbrook.

“We just have to be more physical,” Carrasco stated.

“We’ve done a lot of rebounding drills. We have Ari (Lampkins), Ginger (Thomas), Fatima (Stingily), (Ayanna) Shelby, Damia (Patton) and Maria (Picazo) who are strong players inside. We lost both of our centers from last year, one who graduated and one who didn’t, but we have six

of them now. I think we are going to be alright.”

The conference will likely run through Oswego East this year as the reigning champs got even stronger with Plainfield North transfer Amaya Johns.

But, the Spartans feel they can be competitive and have a successful season.

“Oswego East is a step ahead of everybody and Plainfield North and Plainfield East are going to be tough,” Carrasco said.

Plainfield East is a quick and a fast team and have everybody back. When it comes to conference, we’re going to have 12 girls on the bench and seven of them

will be underclassmen.”

“I would like to win a lot more this year than last year,” Marin

said. “We just need to play as a team, finish our shots and work on the little things.”

Fund business with cash not a loan Whatever you do, you need to stop listening to your friend about borrowing money DEAR DAVE, We’re completely debt-free with a fully-funded emergency fund, and we have $350,000 sitting in the bank from a land sale a couple of months ago.

My wife and I would like to buy a chicken farm with two houses and upgrade it to contract standards. This, plus the livestock, would cost around $290,000. I would keep my regular job, and my wife would run the farm.

An investor friend of mine said I should finance the entire business purchase. What do you think about this scenario?

DARRYL DEAR DARRYL, Either do the deal with cash, or don’t do it at all. Your investor friend is full of crap, and there’s a good chance he doesn’t have nearly as much money as you do.

He’s probably got more bad opinions than dollars.

Now, the pro formas on the kind of thing you’re talking about are incredible. They can make a ton of money, but they’re a lot of work, I mean real, hard work.

Some are more high-tech than others, and that can mean a little less work, but someone’s got to be out there every day with their hands on this thing or you’re going to be in trouble.

I don’t know the ideas you have for divvying up the work, but I’m afraid it would just be too much for one-and-a-half people.

I don’t mind you doing the deal, as long as you pay cash for it. But if you’re looking to invest, there’s always real estate—it seems like you’ve done pretty good there— or maybe another small business idea. Whatever you do, you need to stop listening to your friend about borrowing money. You’re liable to turn what was a blessing into a curse if the two of you go borrow money on a chicken farm.

—DAVE DEAR DAVE, What is your opinion on micro investing apps?

TAMMY DEAR TAMMY, Honestly, I’m not a big fan of micro investing apps. As you probably know, the word “micro” means small. So why would you want to mess with something like that? Are you going to have a micro retirement? Do you want to be micro wealthy? I don’t. I want to be really wealthy with a big retirement and a big life full of outrageous giving.

It’s fine if you want to give micro investing apps a try. I’m not going to be mad at you or anything like that. But these things function kind of like deals where the marketers say you get one percent back.

It’s like credit cards, where silly people spend $100,000 in order to get $1,000 in brownie points.

You’ve got to do more than micro, because micro means what it says—small.

I guess you could argue that at least you’re doing something, but if that’s your only plan you should prepare to be pretty hungry during retirement.

When it comes to investing, why not go big? Go big, or go home!

An advocate for senior care, Anna Walters of Senior Star at Weber Place, reminds caregivers, relatives, friends and neighbors to be mindful of how this may affect seniors.

Walters stresses there are two different issues at play with seniors who may be experiencing holiday blues—loneliness and social isolation. While you may still be happy but have feelings of loneliness, those that are experiencing social isolation are increasing their mortality rate just as fast as those with obesity or those who smoke and can show cognitive decline quicker.

“Things continually start happening to them—becoming a widow; losing their ability to drive; functional loss; many outlive their friends—they can soon find themselves at a loss,” said Walters. “Meanwhile the weather, itself, is cold and gloomy and most of the time, the holidays have people reflect on the

good times with family and friends—but now they are gone and despair sets in.”

Get connected, Walters emphasizes for those who may worry about loved ones, neighbors and friends. Simply getting involved with a regular phone call or visit is paramount. Set up a family phone tree, where one member of the family is calling grandma or grandpa each day or taking them out once a week. Knowing when each other are reaching out eliminates the mystery if your loved one is involved.

“Research shows that to feel connected, you must have two or more substantial qual-

ity relationships and that means staying in touch,” said Walters. “They also need a sense of purpose—someone needs to need them.

School projects, family dinners—reach out and include them.”

She further concludes that finding intergenerational connections are important and offer further opportunities to fulfill a void that may exist.
