Library hosts annual ‘Haunted Happenings’ event new additions to event excites more than 500 in attendance By ryan ostry Bugle staff

@RyanOstry_BR18 rostry@buglenewspapers.com

The Romeoville White Oak Library District was in full effect for the week of Halloween as they hosted the annual “Haunted Happenings” event. “Every year we do our annual Halloween party but this year we decided to mix things up a little more,” said children’s services supervisor Jessica Smith. “Last year we had around 300 people, so this year we decided to expand things by moving the games into our programing area, the programing room will have crafts and in the large meeting room we are doing the haunted house.” Last year, the library’s haunted house was featured as just kid

friendly with the purpose to be more fun than scary. This year, there was a different agenda. With witches, a replica of the Pennywise from the movie It, a walking ghost, a vampire, coffin, morgue, mad science lab and other props to give viewers the scare they hoped for, were all present in the haunted house. “There’s a lot of animated things and things that are moving around this year so it’s not just for children,” Smith said. “Everything is glow in the dark this year as well with people moving around and popping out so it’s pretty cool.” For children that wanted to test the waters in the new and improved haunted house, there was a route they could go to in the meeting room that gave them the scare they were hoping for, but for those who didn’t want to have nightmares, there was a more kid friendly route that was for ages six and under to walk around where actors did not pop out and chas-

Besides the haunted house, a trunk-or-treat venue was stationed outside where kids had the chance to receive candy from more than 75 vendors that were partnered with the library. In the programing area, a tennis ball-throwing contest, ping pongthrowing contest, candy race and other fun activities for all families to enjoy were utilized. For the children who wanted the chance to show off their arts and crafts skills, drawings and

paintings, they were in the programing room where just part of the more than 500 people decided to participate in. “Everyone was super excited about last year’s event and for this year I think it’s even going to be better because we have more

Mitchem, Jr. “Jane Addams and A. Vito Martinez Middle Schools have done outstanding work to earn the Exemplary designation, and we look forward to more VVSD schools joining them with the Exemplary designation in the future.” The definition of the Exemplary category is as follows: A school that has no underperforming subgroups, a graduation rate of greater than 67 percent, and whose performance is in the top 10 percent of schools statewide. Panorama School Specific Surveys Now Open The VVSD Panorama Survey is now available on each of our school websites. The survey is school specific and to take the survey, you simply need to go the school website. To access your school’s website, go to www.vvsd.org hold your cursor over “Our District”, click on “Select a School” and then select your school from the dropdown menu. Marine gifted home in Joliet from ‘Building Homes for Heroes’ operation welcome you home, a naperville-based volunteer organization, provided home furnishings By mark gregory editorial director

@Hear_The_Beard mark@buglenewspapers.com Within five years, Marine Corps Sergeant Nick Wallace went from living in a homeless shelter on Chicago’s west side to living in his own home in Joliet – one gifted to him by ‘Building Homes for Heroes.’ “In 2014 or 15, I was living in the city and I became homeless. I was living in a homeless shelter on the west side of Chicago and it was during that time that I got hired at Verizon, so I was driving from the homeless shelter to Schaumburg every day until I had enough money,” Wallace said. “The VOA helped me with the first couple month’s rent – it wasn’t in the nicest of areas, but it was better than the shelter,” Wallace said. “It happens to some vets. In my case, it was a freak thing. I paid my rent in advance and they guy I was renting from screwed everyone and I didn’t have any extra money.” Wallace rebounded and ended up working for the city of Macomb, where one day he saw a television commercial that changed his life. “I was watching FOX News and I saw a commercial for ‘Building Homes for Heroes’ and I applied,” Wallace said. “I really didn’t hear anything back for four or five months, then they contacted me in the beginning of September and asked me a few questions and called back a week later and asked me some more personal questions and at the end of the conversation, she told me I would be receiving a home.” On Sept. 19, Wallace received the keys to his home, he had another organization step up and assist even more.

Operation Welcome You Home, a Naperville-based volunteer organization, provided furnishings for Wallace’s home. “After I got the home and it was two blessings in a row. I was grateful when I thought they were going to give me furniture for one room, but they bought furniture for every

marine Corps sergeant nick wallace was gifted a home and furnishings from two organizations devoted to helping veterans as they return from overseas.

“i am still kind of blown away by it. i will still be sitting in the house just thinking about how awesome it is that these organizations do stuff for veterans. there are a lot of vets out there that need help a lot of the young guys come back and they have issues.”

single room and let me pick it out,” Wallace said. Wallace served in the Marines from 2003-07, spending time in Fallujah, Iraq. While in Iraq, Wallace was injured when indirect mortar and rocket fire hit his landing zone. He sustained injuries to his back and a traumatic brain injury. He also suffers from PTSD, tinnitus and chronic headaches. “I had several issues and I am still working through a lot of them,” Wallace said. “In 2010, I hit a real low point when I was in school and I was having PTSD and I have a traumatic brain injury and I had nightmares to insomnia – a lot of the mental stuff. You come back

and you have to refind yourself because you are not the same person as when you left. I have had a couple guys that I knew commit suicide a couple years ago because they were having such a hard time and didn’t want to deal with it. “I have been there. I have been in that headspace several times and I have wanted to give up. I think a lot of people forget about the vets and what they sacrificed. For years, I had a lot of anger outbursts – no one in my family understood it, it cost me two marriages and I got help and did a lot of self-help to see what I can do, because at first, I didn’t understand it.” After receiving his new home and furniture, Wallace wants to

help other vets the way he was. “I am still kind of blown away by it. I will still be sitting in the house just thinking about how awesome it is that these organizations do stuff for veterans. There are a lot of vets out there that need help – a lot of the young guys come back and they have issues,” Wallace said. “I want to help to do something for other veterans. A lot of them go through being ashamed and that goes along with that military mindset and there are a lot of vets out there that are struggling. I joined the Plainfield American Legion and I am hoping I can work them and help. I received a blessing and I just want to pass that on, that is what they teach you in the Marines.”

Bolingbrook defeats hinsdale Central in the opening round of the Class 8a football playoffs By ryan ostry Bugle staff

@RyanOstry_BR18 rostry@buglenewspapers.com In what was a complete dominant performance, Bolingbrook rolled past Hinsdale Central 42-13. The Raiders (7-3, 3-3), who have been bounced out of the first round for the last four years, were determined to not let it happen for the fifth consecutive year. “We’ve been knocked out the last four years so it feels good to make it to the second round,” said coach John Ivlow. “We’re very healthy at this point in the season and that’s what has been our Achilles heal the last few years having key guys out so that’s been a huge difference.” The Raiders got on the board quickly in the first quarter with a twoyard rushing touchdown by senior quarterback and Yale commit Devyn Suggs to give the Raiders a 7-0 lead with 7:49 left in the first quarter. With a Red Devil fumble that was picked up by senior linebacker D’Mauryon Hunter, the Raiders were back in position to score. An 11-yard rushing touchdown by junior running back Justin Lynch (17 carries, 141 yards) extended the Raiders early lead to 14-0 with 4:50 left in the game. “Great blocking to my [offensive line] tonight,” Lynch said. “They did a wonderful job blocking for me all night.” With a 14-0 lead that went into the second quarter, Bolingbrook kept the offensive momentum going. A seven-yard touchdown run by

Lynch put the Raiders up by a score of 21-0 with 8:21 left in the first half. The Red Devils answered with their first score of the game with a 35-yard touchdown pass from Junior quarterback Mike Brescia to senior wide receiver Mitch Anderson that made the score 21-6 with 1:34 remaining in the half. Apparently, a 15-point lead at the half was just not enough for the Raiders. On what continued to be a dominant first half for Lynch, nothing changed in the final minute. A 62-yard burst set up a five-yard touchdown run by Lynch that put the Raiders lead to 28-6 at halftime. “Lynch really stepped up tonight,” Ivlow said. “Again, he got his chance because of injuries and he did a hell of a job.” In the second half, not much changed. A 20-yard evasive touchdown run by senior wide receiver Antonio King put the Raiders up 35-6 with 6:08 left in the third, making the game out of reach for the Red Devils. To capitalize on his night, a twoyard rushing touchdown by Lynch culminated on what was a fourtouchdown evening by the junior. “It’s surreal to me,” Lynch said. “We came out after that last game we lost and we had the mentality that we were going to get this first round win.” The No.21 Raiders will host the No.5 Oswego Panthers in the second round of the Class 8A playoffs at 6 p.m. Saturday at Bolingbrook High School.

The Flyers improve to 22-4, 8-3 GLVC while the Bearcats drop to 1114, 4-7 GLVC. Lewis fell behind 3-0 to begin the match before coming back to even things at 10 on a kill by Juliana Van Loo

(Burbank, Calif./John Burroughs). The Flyers took the lead for a good with a 6-3 run. McKendree cut the lead to 16-15 on a service ace by Macy Tongate but that was the closest they got as Lewis closed the set on a 9-2 run to win the opener 25-17. The middle stanza was tight with the Flyers leading 12-10 before pulling away thanks to a 12-3 run to win the set 25-14 to take the commanding 2-0 lead. Lewis hit a whopping .593 in the frame recording 18 kills against two errors in 27 chances. Colleen Wilhelm (Euclid, Ohio/ Lake Catholic) had five kills in the set while Van Loo and Ava Venema (Westmont, Ill./Timothy Christian) added four kills each. The Flyer defense held the Bearcats to a .143 hitting percentage in the frame. Lewis led by as many as five points in the final frame but McKendree refused to go quietly as they cut the deficit to three but were unable to get any closer as the Flyers held on for a 25-21 victory to complete the sweep. Wilhelm finished with a matchhigh 13 kills while Van Loo and Venema added 10 kills apiece. Mikah Freppon (Cold Spring, Ky./Newport Central Catholic) and Haley Sobieralski (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) each had 18 assists and Jamie Poppen (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway West) had 18 digs. Lewis finished the match with a .293 hitting percentage (45/11/116) while holding the Bearcats to a .100 attack percentage (30/18/120).

VOLLEYBALL The Lewis University women’s bowling team qualified first at the Crusader Classic over the weekend at Lynwood Bowl and finished in fourth place overall, ending the weekend with a 9-3 record. The Flyers (26-12) earned the top seed with 10,092 pins over six traditional games and five Baker matches, good for an average of 183.5. Second-seeded Drury averaged a 178.6 (9,823). WOMEN’S SOCCER Lewis’ women’s soccer team secured a spot in the GLVC Tournament with a 1-0 victory over Southwest Baptist on Sunday afternoon. The Flyers got some help as Drury rallied to defeat Illinois Springfield 3-2 in OT and Truman State defeated Lindenwood 2-1. Lewis did its job and then had to wait to see what happened in the other game. Things weren’t looking good for the Flyers as Illinois Springfield held a 2-0 lead at halftime over the Panthers. Drury scored twice in the second half on goals from Kennedy Thompson (59th minute) and Christine Harp (81st minute) to tie the game and force overtime. The Panthers scored the gamewinner with 3:28 left in the first overtime on Natalie Beck’s first goal of the season. Lewis dominated the stat sheet in the first 45 minutes holding 61 percent of the position and outshot the Bearcats (3-13-1, 2-13 GLVC) 8-2. Lewis scored the game-winner 2:34 into the second half as Cali HavelkaVanderplow (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale South) ripped a shot from the center Lewis (8-7-3, 6-6-3 GLVC) qualify for the postseason tournament for the second straight season and will travel to Lebanon, Ill., next Sunday (Nov. 10) to take on top seeded McKendree (13-3-2, 11-2-2 GLVC) at 12 p.m. The Flyers look to avenge a 1-0 defeat to the Bearcats in Lebanon back on Oct. 18.
