Food drive produces almost 700 boxes of food Monetary donations increased $2,000 from last year’s event In the largest community effort of its kind, more than 450 volunteers came together in Romeoville to ensure “no man, woman, or child will go hungry,” the basic promise of an annual food drive that keeps the community united.

Supporters of every denomination and age group came out to either drive through the neighborhood, knocking on doors collecting food or to become a part of the organized chaos of sorting and packing the thousands of items to be donated.

Organizer Deb Eischen told volunteers to take pride in knowing that, through their generosity, more than 17,350 items were collected which resulted in a total of 694 boxes of food that was divided among four food pantries.

“Although food donations just slightly decreased, monetary donations increased ($2,000), which allowed us to financially assist six food pantries now, with enough to help two food pantries again in the spring,” said Eischen. “This has helped to insure that no man, woman, or child will go hungry during this holiday season and these trying times. I am always amazed at, and truly blessed

with, such a caring community. God bless you always!”

It is the collective spirit of all those involved that becomes contagious, say repeat volunteers.

“I started out in the ‘soup room,’ my wife brought me along to help put and now every year, that’s where I head--the soup room, there is no reason I wouldn’t come out to help-you just do it,” said Bill Weber, one Romeoville resident.

For some it was the first year to see the procession of cars coming in with trunkloads of food, collected by the many teenagers knocking door to door despite the cold, windy temps, and into shopping carts galore, taken via assembly line to be sorted into the many rooms dedicated to a particular food staple; and for others it’s been 20 years in the making.

For the Austriacu’s it’s a family thing—coming out “to give back in

some small way.”

And with a chorus of, “It just feels good to do this; We need to help our neighbors,” there was an equal amount who were there because they had once received and now it was a time to give a hand up to others.

“With today’s economy, you never know when you may be on the other side of it,” said one volunteer.

Organizer Denise Armbruster said that’s what sets this collection apart— the spirit of a community that comes together to take care of their own.

“I ask people, what does hungry or homeless look like to you,the reality is, it can be me, or your next door neighbor—you don’t have to go far to know people are hungry. Often times it is those that know what it is like to go hungry and do not what anyone else to know what that feels like.”

The event, which has become tradition for many families, is sponsored by area churches including St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church, Community Christian Church, United Presbyterian Church and The Rock Church, and newcomers the Church of High Point and the Church of Bolingbrook.

“On behalf of the entire Harvest Saturday Committee, we would like to extend a heartfelt thank you for donating to the Harvest Saturday Food Drive. We’d also like to thank the 450+ volunteers that this project couldn’t happen,” said Eischen.

Development OK’d for Route53/ Romeo Road Thornton’s Gas Station officially broke ground on their future site

BY BUGLE STAFF Development continues with the ground-breaking on a corner never expected for retail.

Thornton’s Gas Station officially broke ground on their future site at the northwest corner of Route 53 and Romeo Road. The 10.7-acre site adjacent to Resurrection Cemetery was recently sold by the Diocese of Joliet.

Site work is underway for the gas station that will include a 4,400-sq.ft. convenience store. Thornton’s is part of a larger development that will include Romeoville Express Car Wash. The development will support approximately 30,000-square feet of total retail space. The expected completion date is Spring 2017.

In other development news, final development plans for Heartland Dental were recently approved allowing for a site, now vacant, to be developed just south of the Sam’s Club fueling station in Romeoville Crossings. The 4,200 square foot facility will be a stand-alone dental office building.

“We are happy to see Heartland Dental invest in the Weber Road Corridor. They will be a great addition to the other businesses that recently opened at this intersection,” said Mayor John Noak.

Construction is anticipated to start in Spring 2017, with a completion date of Fall 2017.

Light show delights, opens holiday season Promenade Holiday Lighting ceremony opens Saturday, Nov. 19

Hundreds turned out for what is considered the official start to the holiday season in Bolingbrook as thousands of twinkling lights were lit at The Promenade during the annual Holiday Lighting ceremony Saturday, Nov. 19.

Just as the weather turned to feel as if Jack Frost was nipping at your nose, children and adults alike were treated to holiday festivities

including horse-drawn wagon rides, caroling, crafts and a visit from the big guy, Santa, himself.

The day’s events culminated with the official tree lighting, co-sponsored by the village of Bolingbrook and the Promenade at 6 p.m. where the large tree took center stage, literally in the middle of the Promenade for all to see, lit to the tune of three holiday songs.

The light show continues through Dec. 31, every hour on the hour from 5 to 9 p.m. Each show lasts 15 minutes with three songs.

BHS students sweep Tollway map art contest Finalists were selected from 90 entries from schools through Chicago area

Bolingbrook High School graphic design students finished in the top four spots in the Illinois Tollway’s 2017 map cover art contest.

Artwork designed by junior Luis Chavez earned top honors. His design will appear on thousands of Tollway system maps next year.

In addition, he receives a $400 gift certificate from Blick Art Materials and $200 in gift certificates from MBRE to use at Tollway oases retail shops and restaurants.

Senior Alyssa Elborne finished

second, senior Vanessa Arenas was third and senior Manuella Rodela was fourth. Each receives a $200 gift certificate from Blick Art Materials and $100 in gift certificates from MBRE. The finalists were selected from 90 entries from schools throughout the Chicago area. The finalists’ designs were posted online and in every Tollway oasis where more than 40,000 votes were cast to pick the winners. The contest was open to art students at more

than 300 public high schools in the 12 counties served by the Tollway.

Any high school student enrolled in art class was eligible to enter.

This year’s theme was “Enhancing Drivers Experience via Innovation and Technology.”

Chamber honors RHS for its volunteer leadership Leadership Awards given at Chamber’s annual awards luncheon Romeoville High School received the 2016 Romeoville Area Chamber of Commerce Volunteer Leadership Award Tuesday at the Chamber’s annual awards luncheon.

Chamber Executive Director Michelle Jarnutowski praised the RHS leadership team for the

partnerships that have developed between the community and the school’s staff and students “They are dedicated individuals who love their roles and make a commitment beyond their dayto-day jobs. Many of these individuals take the time to sit on our

Chamber Education Committee, they volunteer for events as well as numerous other community activities,” Jarnutowski said. ”They are committed to offering students and businesses mutually beneficial learning experiences for success and growth.”

“The thank you goes to all of you in the community who allow our kids and our staff the opportunity to partner with you,” said RHS Principal Derek Kinder who

accepted the award. “We truly believe that our school is only as strong as the community we serve. Partnering with you really makes that happen.

“We look forward to continuing our partnership with all of the different opportunities you’re able to provide for our students, and our students are able to provide for you,” he added.

Man gets 40 months in federal prison 21-year-old plead guilty to attempting to join terrorist group A Bolingbrook man was sentenced Nov. 18 to 40 months in federal prison, followed by 20 years of supervised release, for attempting to travel overseas to join a foreign terrorist organization in Syria.

Mohammed Hamzah Khan, 21, pleaded guilty last year to one count of attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization. The organization is identified in a written plea

agreement as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (“ISIL”).

U.S. District Judge John J. Tharp Jr. imposed the 40-month prison term and ordered that it be followed by 20 years of intensive supervised release. Among the special terms of supervised release, Khan must participate in a mental health treatment program; consent at any time to a search by a probation officer or desig-

nated law enforcement official of his home, property and electronic communication devices in his possession and control; attend violent extremism counseling; and comply with the requirements of a computer monitoring program, which includes the installation of computer-monitoring software on all devices in Khan’s possession and control that are capable of accessing the Internet.

Pursuant to the plea agreement, Khan agreed to fully and truthfully co-operate in any matter in which he is called upon by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois.

The sentencing was announced

by Zachary T. Fardon, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois; Mary B. McCord, Acting Assistant Attorney General for National Security; and Michael J. Anderson, Special Agent-in-Charge

of the Chicago Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Khan, a U.S. citizen from southwest suburban Bolingbrook, has been detained in federal custody since his arrest on Oct. 4, 2014, at O’Hare International Airport in Chicago.

According to his plea agreement, beginning no later than approximately February 2014, Khan used the Internet to obtain introductions to ISIL members in Syria and to assist him with traveling there to join the terrorist group.

Khan admitted speaking with ISIL members to coordinate the logistics of his admission into ISILcontrolled territory, the plea agreement states.

Khan further admitted in the plea agreement that he knew ISIL had been designated by the United States as a foreign terrorist organization. Khan intended to work in

Syria under the direction and control of ISIL, and be required to take any assignment ISIL gave him.

The case was investigated by the Chicago Joint Terrorism Task Force, which is comprised of FBI special agents, Chicago Police Department officers, and representatives from an additional 20 federal, state and local law enforcement agencies. U.S. Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), and the Illinois State Police provided significant assistance in the investigation.

by Assistant United States Attorneys Matt Hiller, Angel Krull and Sean Driscoll; and U.S. Department of Justice Trial Attorney Michael Dittoe of the National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section.

The mobile unit travels throughout Will County to help residents with resume development, cover letters and job applications. The workforce center contains 11 computer stations, internet access, and offers keyboarding lessons, as well as resume and job search assistance using online listings including jobs4people.org and Illinois workNet. The Mobile Workforce Center will be at Fountaindale Public Library, 300 W. Briarcliff, Bolingbrook, from 9:30 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 3:30 p.m. on

Mondays, except Dec. 26.

The unit will be at University Park Village Hall, 698 Burnham Drive, in University Park, from 9:30 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 3 p.m. on Tuesdays.

Plainfield Public Library, 15025 S. Illinois St., Plainfield, will host the Mobile Workforce Center from 9:30 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 3:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, except for Dec. 21.

Lessons from Mae: How one woman modeled mental wellness at the next one. To her, such habits were not a sacrifice; they were simply a natural extension of her good stewardship.

Having lived through the Great Depression as a teenager, Mae was never one to waste anything In this season of reflection and gratitude, I can think of no better person to honor than my grandmother Mae. She embodied good mental health throughout her 97 years on earth, and she did so without even trying. Her lifetime of inspirational habits made for a long and fruitful journey.

Mae grew up in the upper Mississippi River Valley, near the border between Wisconsin and Minnesota. She taught in a one-room grade school until she got married in the early 1950s, at which point state law made it illegal for her to continue teaching.

The assumption at the time was that a woman’s duties should be to her family rather than to a career. Later, when the law changed, she returned to teaching, where she excelled at instilling the rules of English into countless schoolkids in the area.

Mae helped raise five children and a dozen grandchildren, and I was fortunate to spend many memorable times with her and to learn from her example.

LIVE AND LET LIVE One of Mae’s favorite sayings was “To each his own,” a reminder that while we don’t always agree with others, we can still respect them and acknowledge

their uniqueness. It is this attitude of tolerance that allowed Mae to feel comfortable with everyone she met.

I remember when the famous wrestler and actor Jesse Ventura was running for governor of Minnesota. Although I sensed Mae didn’t support all of his views, she commented that Minnesotans tended to do their own thing, and she wasn’t surprised by his election. In fact, she seemed to take pride in being from a place where people danced to the beat of a different drummer.

STICK WITH IT Mae had patience in abundance and never complained about her circumstances. She dealt with various physical ailments, bitterly cold Minnesota winters and all the drama that any large family produces. But she did so gracefully, even thriving on challenging times in her life.

Having lived through the Great Depression as a teenager, Mae was never one to waste anything. Throughout the course of a full day, she would use exactly one thin napkin, folding it back after each meal and pulling it out again

Perhaps most importantly, Mae nurtured relationships with others. In an age when I feel bothered to leave a note on Facebook wishing someone a happy birthday, it’s remarkable that until the final months of her life, Mae sent handwritten notes to friends and family across the country. And she did so like clockwork, acknowledging the holidays, birthdays and anniversaries of nearly 100 people.

She made it her business to care about others’ business. Not in a nosey way, but because of her genuine interest and curiosity. Your personal interests were her personal interests. This made Mae a great conversationalist, as well as someone you always knew understood your situation.

Taken together, these simple life lessons made for a remarkable life. I can only hope that I am able to practice these ways of being somewhere close to the degree that Mae did. And in turn, to pass them on to others. My thanksgiving this year is for you, grandma.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR DEAR EDITOR, Don’t get me wrong.

I like Bolingbrook. They have great activities in the summer. What I resent is my family and I being harassed and threatened by the Bolingbrook police department, especially code enforcement. They’re the worst. And this has been going on periodically during the

19 years we have lived in Bolingbrook.

I am tired of it. We are good people, quiet, try not to make trouble for other people and our neighbors, and what do we get? Trouble for us. We don’t bother other people. Other people come and bother us. We don’t deserve this. We are private people, keep to ourselves, and mind our own business. I wish other people would, too.

I am 64 and, at my age, deserve peace in my life. Am I able to get it? No. We are periodically being hounded. And we have a recent concern in our family that we are having to address. That is taking all our attention right now. So this has got to stop.

Each year in our country, tens of thousands of passenger vehicle occupants die in motor vehicle crashes. In 2014, in the United States, more than 341 people were killed in crashes on Thanksgiving weekend alone. It’s a sad statistic, but even sadder is that many of those deaths could have been prevented with one simple click of a seat belt.

Bolingbrook one of six Illinois high schools to wear unique Jumpman Brand uniforms this season

For six high school basketball programs across the state – the opening of a season never looked so good.

That is because those programs – including Bolingbrook – they have custom designed uniforms from noted Chicago designer Don C, who has worked with the Jordan Brand on other designs in the past.

The uniforms for the Raiders, Hillcrest, Fenwick, De La Salle, Marian Catholic and Morgan Park are modeled after the 1984 Bulls uniforms the Bulls wore during Jordan’s rookie season.

“I feel very honored for the Jordan Brand to sponsor us,” said Bolingbrook sophomore guard Joseph Yesufu. “It is unique and we are more hyped, so now we have to live up to the hype.”

The Raiders have lived up to the type of program the Jordan Brand sponsors over the past few seasons, including a third-place finish in state two years ago.

“This is our fourth year with them now and I think over those years, we have proven we are one of the elite programs in the state and I think that they think that as well,” Bolingbrook coach Rob Brost said. “It is a thrill for our guys and the uniforms are really

great.”

Senior Nana Akenten knows the Jordan Brand would not trust a program with the jerseys that it didn’t feel would represent the brand well and he knows the team has to respond to that.

“The credit goes all to the coaches,” Akenten said. “They are the ones that let us know we have high standards and high expectations that we need to meet.”

One of the new Raiders is especially happy to be wearing the Jordan Brand uniforms is Malik Binns, as he transferred to Bolingbrook from Morgan Park – another one of the teams wearing the special uniforms this season.

“It is a blessing. I am thankful I came here during the time that they are being sponsored,” Binns said. “It is a great experience I will always have being honored with the [replica 84] Bulls jerseys.”

While the uniforms will be some of the best in the state of Illinois, the Raiders’ senior leader knows that while the uniforms may make the team look good while achieving their goals – they will not help achieve those goals.

“It is a blessing, but at the end of the day, those jerseys will not win us games,” Akenten said. “So we have to come out and play hard and not just come out for looks.”

Plainfield Central’s Shook is POY

Four years ago, Ashley Shook came into Plainfield Central as a shy, quiet player with a world of potential.

As she leaves, she does so as a dominant leader and one of the best players to ever play for the Wildcats.

This season, she posted 547 assists, 207 kills, 204 digs and 32 service aces.

For her efforts, Shook is the 2016 Voyager Media Volleyball Player of the Year.

“She has improved every year which is hard to believe from a (6-foot, 2-inch) setter that is big and physical,” said Central coach Erik Vogt. “The big thing is that she has become an extravert this year. She has become an introvert most of her life – she has always been a very quiet kid. She is very intelligent and works extremely hard, but it is only this year that she has figured out how to get a whole team around her and she has done a great job of getting our program on the right track.

No one wants to let her down because of how hard she works.

“She is just a phenomenal kid and I know people say that and I know I have probably said it, but she is the kid that she is the first one I ever let babysit my daughter outside of my family. I trust her 100 percent and her teammates trust her. She has been an instrumental part of our success every year.”

That success has not only come from Shook’s talent, but her willingness to adapt, which was shown this season when she began to set from the middle.

“She played in the middle at the end of the year and she did that because she wanted to win.

She said if playing middle helped us win and had the best rotation on the floor, she would be in the middle,” Vogt said. “She is always thinking about the team and she is one of the most unselfish people you will ever meet.”

Shook feels the move made her a better player.

“Setting from the middle is different and I really like it and I think we have a really cool offense and it gives me flexibility of

where I can play and what I can do,” Shook said. “I like it because I can get the perspective of all the players.”

That kind of growth has been something Shook said has come throughout the years.

“I have matured a lot over the years. Freshman year, I was quiet and a scared little freshman, but I have had to become a leader on this team and I have had to do what I could to help this team win,” she said.

In the last two seasons, the Wildcats win a pair of regional titles and advanced to the sectional final both years.

Shook will now take those talents to the University of Texas where she will try to win an NCAA title.

“I loved Texas and I got that gut feeling right away. It is far away, but it is going to be my home away from home and I felt at home there right away,” she said.

“The coaching staff is amazing and that they will care about me as a player and a person and help me be a great person even after volleyball. It is also a winning program and I will have a chance to start as a freshman, which is important to me. And of course, I want to win a national championship.”

While Shook strives to be a national champion, Vogt says young players to look to strive to mimic her.

“If I was a fifth or sixth grader playing volleyball for the first time and I saw her play, I would want to be Ashley,” he said.

BROOKLYN BACHMANN MINOOKA The senior setter led the Indians with 993 assists, 180 digs and 26 aces to go with 43 blocks for the Indians, who fell in the three sets to the nation’s No. 1 team in the Class 4A state finals.

“Brooklyn was a fierce leader on the court and we will very much miss her,” said Minooka coach Carrie Prosek. “She would dive through bleachers to keep that ball alive for our offense to hit the ball. She could push the ball to the pin no matter where she was and that is truly what kept us alive when things were off. She took ahold of this young

ELENI BALOURDOS NILES WEST The setter for the Wolves’ fourth-place squad posted 845 assists on the season to go with 55 aces and 167 digs.

“Eleni has run our offense for all four years taking the team to one sectional and one final four trip,” said Niles West coach Stacy Metoyer. “She has also been allconference three years and was runner up for player of the conference. Eleni has also received MVP two of her four years.”

Defensively she can read every other teams offense and was always there to pick up any hard driven hit or tip that was thrown her way. To have 553 digs in one season is just amazing.”

LAUREN BARNES BENET Minnesota recruit, lead the Redwings in digs with 486, while putting up 23 aces and a 2.35 passing rating.

“She is one of the top two or three liberos in the state,” coach Brad Baker said.

CLARE DELAPLANE DOWNERS NORTH Junior is committed to Villanova. She paced the Trojans with 426 kills, 223 digs and 33 aces. She was named to the all-tournament teams at the Wheaton Classic and Waubonsie Warrior Blast and was also named to WSC Silver All-Conference team.

“Clare was clearly one of the state’s most prolific attackers,” said coach Mark Wasik. “Probably what was most impressive is that she made strides in her servereceive and defense as teams figured out that she was one of our steadiest passers and consequently, teams avoided serving her. I look forward to her continued growth as a leader who will positively impact her team as she grows both physically and emotionally leading up to her senior year.”

EMILY HOLBROOK JOLIET CATHOLIC Sophomore outside hitter tallied 183 kills and 13 aces on the season.

Junior outside hitter helped the Indians to second place in Class 4A. She posted 417 kills, 276 digs, 87 blocks and 46 aces.

She was Illinois Player of the week for Prep Volleyball, was AllTournament team at the Mizuno Cup Tournament and was firstteam All-Southwest Prairie Conference.

“I believe Ali is the most explosive player in the area,” Prosek said. “She can definitely put the ball away but this year she has really learned to use different shots so defenses had no clue where she was going every time she went up!

“Her defense has improved tremendously since last year and she has the drive to keep getting better and better in all areas of the game. We ran her out of serve receive out of the middle and right side to keep people wondering where she was going. She is a blast to watch play.”

Junior outside hitter tallied 326 kills, 302 assists and 60 aces for the regional champions.

JODEE KOVANDA LOCKPORT Senior was a six-rotation leader for the Porters and the team MVP. She was lost at the end of the season to injury, but posted 190 kills, 244 assists and 42 aces.

TAYLOR LANDFAIR PLAINFIELD CENTRAL Freshman tallied 351 kills for the regional champions.

LYRIC MILES ROMEOVILLE Senior tallied 241 kills, 195 digs and 33 aces to lead the Spartans.

SARA NIELSON BENET Senior setter was a three-year starter for Benet. This season she posted 1,034 assists, 32 aces and 28 blocks. Her assist total is good for fourth all-time in a single season in IHSA history.

“As the season progressed Rocky got stronger and stronger and more confident in herself,” Prosek said. “She turned into a powerhouse and that was the turning point of our season.

“She started taking risks and trusting herself and then she was unstoppable in all aspects of the game. Not only in her offense but also in her defense.

“She has such a high reach, and quick arm swing teams could not stop her. She is a fun player to watch who really has fun while she is playing”

Flyer women post 29 assists in win The No. 20 Lewis University women’s basketball team set a single-game, school-record with 29 assists, as the Flyers passed their way to the 91-47 regional victory over Davis & Elkins at the McDonnell Center on Saturday (Nov. 19) afternoon.

The previous record of 28 was set in a 96-57 win over Rockhurst on February 5, 2015.

Lewis sophomore guard Tierney Lockett (Richton Park, Ill./Rich South) dished out a game-high six assists for the Flyers.

With the win, Lewis improves to 4-1 on the season, while the host Senators drop to 3-1 on the campaign.

Lewis redshirt senior guard Jamie Johnson (South Holland, Ill./Marian Catholic) led five Flyers with double-figures with 12 points.

Sophomore forward Jessica Kelliher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) and redshirt junior guard Tiana Karopulos (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) each scored 11 points, while senior guard Alyssa Siwek (Palos Heights, Ill./Mother

MEN’S BASKETBALL Despite four players scoring in double-figures and outrebounding Ferris State by 16, the Lewis University men’s basketball team dropped an 8472 regional decision to the host Bulldogs at Jim Wink Arena on Saturday (Nov 19) afternoon.

Lewis sophomores Delaney Blaylock (Wyoming, Mich./Godwin Heights) and Frank Vukaj (Davison, Mich./Davison) each scored 14 points in the loss.

As a team, Truman State hit .236 (60 kills, 19 errors, 174 attacks), including a .357 (12-2-28) performance in Game Five. Lewis hit .191 (68-31-194) and held a hitting percentage of .107 (6-328) in the final game.

MEN’S X-COUNTRY For the first time since 2001 the Lewis University men’s cross country team made it to the NCAA Division II Championship.

At the end of the day the Flyers finished the 10k 17th with a team score of 425 and an average time of 32:17.5.

The stand out performance of the day for the Flyers came from Michael Leet (Arlington Heights, Ill./Prospect). Leet finished 33rd overall with a time of 31:09.9, this was enough for him to qualify as an All-American.

“I’m very proud of Michael, he ran a smart race.” Head men’s cross country coach James Kearney said. “He did an awesome job in his first national meet, and its a positive step for him and the program. We’re very excited looking ahead to indoor and outdoor track.”

Among the rest of the team Sergio Miranda (Romeoville, Ill./ Romeoville) finished the race in 32:04.6, James Frederickson (Racine, Wis./Case) finished in 32:07.0 and Xavier Reed (Valpariso, Ind./Valparaiso) finished in 32:57.2.

Pursuant to Local Court Rule 11.03 (J) if there is a surplus following application of the proceeds of sale, then the plaintiff shall send written notice pursuant to 735 ILCS 5/15-1512(d) to all parties to the proceeding advising them of the amount of the surplus and that the surplus will be held until a party obtains a court order for its distribution or, in the absence of an order, until the surplus is forfeited to the State.
