Brooks Middle School hosts ‘Hydrangea Albright’ play centers around remaining positive throughout lives up and down journey by ryaN osTry bugle staff

Such is the case in the play “Hydrangea Albright” performed by Brooks Middle. “Because we have an old high school building, we’re blessed with a full theatre set up,” said director Ruth Bardy. “The lights, sound, spotlight and everything else is all ran by the kids.” Since taking over the old Bolingbrook High School building in 2004, Bardy has been in charge of the drama program at Brooks.

Bardy said the play, which is the Brooks’ 30th production, correlates to life, which is why this is one of the more important plays that goes on at the middle school. “The play is centered around that there are things that happen in our life good or bad,” Bardy said. “There are dueling playwrights that cover this notion.” The juxtaposition that Bardy alludes to is a theatre that inadvertently hires two different playwrights to write a play about the main character of the play, Hydrangea Albright. This girl, who’s family is cursed with bad luck, has one playwright that sees her life as a disaster.

On the other hand, the other playwright sees her life as a comedy where failure leads to new opportunity. “The comedy playwright tries to organize her playwright in a very positive way and then the tragic playwright who thinks everything is horrible and is trying her best to make it in a big grand tragedy.” During the play, both sides argue while eccentric characters perform

and rewrite the play. The play begins with a curse created by Albright’s great-greatgrandfather, and the curse continues throughout many generations of the family. Events that occur such as a lightning strike to a tuba, to a case of uncontrollable hiccups, to a tree house that was destroyed by a piece of a International Space Station, the unfortunate events keep rolling on.

With the many unfortunate events that take place, the play illustrates that the proverbial glass half full or empty can be used in any situation depending on how someone reacts. Albright illustrates not just hers, but everyone’s moral compass on how to react to certain events in one’s own life by remaining positive and not acting like the victim in every bad situation that is dealt to someone. “We try to choose our plays with respect to all of our actors,” Bardy said. “We try to select a play that has a message for them, and of course the moral and the message in this play is that life is going to throw things at you and the way you react is more important is more important than what actually happens to you.”

In the 2019 season, the 12-0 Blue Devils have given up an average of 3.3 points per game. In the Raiders first quarterfinals appearance since the 2014 season, they lost 18-6, preventing them from playing Brother Rice in the semifinals. “Anyone who was here understood that we struggled moving the ball the entire game,” said Bolingbrook coach John Ivlow. “They physically beat us up.” The Raiders got off to an inauspicious start with a special teams miscue that resulted in a player hitting the ball on a Blue Devil punt that was recovered by Warren on the Raider seven-yard line. The Raiders defense held still, as they did all game, and the Blue Devils were limited to a field goal. A safety and a four-yard touchdown run by the Blue Devils put them in front at halftime with an 11-0 score. In the second half, Warren extended its lead to 18-0 with a 62yard fumble recovery for a touchdown. The lone score for the Raiders came in the final minutes of the third quarter with a 12-yard touchdown pass from senior wide receiver Antonio King (5 catches,

29 yards) to senior tight end Trevor Borland. The slight momentum swing for the Raiders in the second half was just not enough as the Blue Devil defense did what they have been doing all season, not giving an inch. “They’re really fast,” King said. “They all listen to their coach, if there is an open hole then someone else slides in.” Although the Raiders had a successful season finishing up at 8-4, the goal is still to get back to the 8A state title game. The last time the Raiders accomplished that feat, was in 2011 when they took home the title. With the departure of guys such as King and senior quarterback Devyn Suggs who will be attending Yale, Ivlow said there will be big holes to fill for the 2020 season if the Raiders want to go where they feel like they can, state. “We had a great senior group with great leadership this year,” Ivlow said. “We’ve had some phenomenal kids from grade point average to personality and a lot of them are going on to college already to play football.” In the 2020 season, the Raiders will rely heavily on sophomore running back Jacquan Howard and junior running back Justin Lynch. Defensively, the Raiders will be getting back junior cornerback Justin Walters who has offers from Notre Dame, Michigan, Northwestern, Army and Boston College.

Joliet catholic ousted by mascoutah in final seconds defending state champions come up short in title defense; will graduate only six seniors

@BugleNewspapers sweditor@buglenewspapers.com In its IHSA Class 5A quarterfinal match-up, with St. Louis’ Metro-East Mascoutah Indians, the defending Class 5A State Champions from Joliet Catholic Academy (8-4), were deadlocked at 14-14 with 7:13 remaining, at Memorial Stadium in Joliet on Saturday night. The visitors marched 70-yards on 15 plays behind their huge offensive line and scored the game-winning touchdown with 16 tics remaining on the scoreboard. Led up front by offensive lineman, Matt Wilson (6-foot-5, 320), Elijah Peterson (6-foot-5, 320) and the smaller Patrick Grant, Jr (5-foot-8,

290), Indian senior halfback, Devin Wills (20 carries, 151 yards, 2 TDs) rambled into the end zone, from one yard out and broke hearts all over Joliet as the Hilltoppers fell 21-14. Wills entered Saturday night’s quarterfinal contest, having rushed for 1,847 yards and had scored 27 touchdowns. The Hilltoppers struck quickly in the first minute of the game. Senior tailback Kenyetta Williams (18 carries, 134 yards, TD) electrified the huge Hilltopper contingent when he raced 66-yards to pay-dirt on the second play of the game. Junior placekicker Jake Dixon’s first of two PAT’s, put the Hill up 7-0 with 11:04 remaining in the first quarter. The fired-up Hilltopper defense,

smothered the Indians and quickly picked up a three and out but could not move the ball. Attempting to punt, the ball was muffed and the Indian defense blocked the kick and took over at the Hillltopper 21-yard line. Mascoutah senior quarterback, Devon Ross (5-for-9, 74 yards, TD, INT) connected with senior widereceiver Tim Middleton for a 21-yard scoring strike. After Logen Timon’s PAT, the game was tied at 7-7 with 7:04 in the first quarter. There was no scoring in the second quarter and the teams went to halftime still deadlocked. With 8:41 remaining in the third quarter, Wills raced 85-yards for a touchdown and a 14-7 Indian lead. The Hilltoppers answered with a 38-yard touchdown rumble from sophomore Jordan Anderson (14 carries, 136 yards, TD) to tie the

game at 14-14. The rest of the third quarter, the teams punted the ball back to each other and the score remained deadlocked at 14-14. With nine minutes remaining the Hilltoppers faced a third and four at the Indians 44-yard line. Running behind JCA’s huge offensive line, Anderson had the Indians on their heels. JCA sophomore quarterback, Aidan Voss ( 4-for-10, 33 yards, 2 INT) dropped back to pass and was sacked at midfield. An incomplete pass on third downled to a punt that Middleton returned to the Indian 30-yard line with 7:13 remaining. Six minutes and 57 seconds later, Wills’ one-yard touchdown run moved the 9-3 Indians into the Class 5A Final Four against Rochester (111) in Mascoutah next Saturday. For the Hilltoppers who had only

six seniors on their roster, the 2019 season was a tremendous success. JCA won the inaugaral Chicago Catholic League/ East Suburban Catholic White Division championship. Being a year ahead of schedule, they advanced to the IHSA Class 5A Elite 8. “I told the seniors, that I am so proud of what they went through and accomplished in their four years at JCA,” Hilltopper coach Jake Jaworski said. “From suffering through losing freshman and sophomore team seasons to winning the Class 5A state championship as juniors and to making the Class 5A elite eight as seniors. “To the many underclassman that we will have back in 2020, I told them they are now seniors and juniors and must look forward. They must also be ready to get back to work right now.”

Lauren Stefanski ( JR/Plainfield, Ill.) and Brooklyn Withey ( JR/Lapeer, Mich.) both earned a spot on the All-CCAC First Team while Taylor Valant ( JR/St. Anne, Ill.) was named to the second team. The all-conference first and second-team squads were comprised of 14 student-athletes apiece. Indiana South Bend’s Hannah Marchand and Trinity Christian’s Dani Van Laten were recognized as co-CCAC Players of the Year while Dani Van Laten of Trinity Christian repeated as the league’s Setter of the Year and her teammate, Brianna Figueroa received Libero of the Year accolades. Bella Kuechenberg of Indiana Northwest claimed Freshman of the Year honors and Trinity Christian’s head coach Bill Schepel was awarded Coach of the Year recognition as the Trolls won both the CCAC Regular-Season and Tournament titles. A two-time (Sept. 17 and 24) CCAC Attacker of the Week selection this fall, Stefanski tallied doubledigit kills in 15 matches this season, which included seven of her last eight outings. The Loyola of Chicago transfer led the CCAC in both hitting percentage and total blocks while ranking fourth among the national leaders in hitting percentage and tied for 21st in blocks. A three-time (2017-19) AllCCAC pick, Brooklyn Withey hammered a team third-most 307 kills and averaged 2.24 kills a set while hitting at a .150 clip. The middle hitter also placed second on the squad in both digs (366 total) and service aces (39) while her 48 total blocks represented the team’s fourth highest output. She averaged a team-best tying 2.43 kills per set and produced a .211 hitting percentage for the season.
