Holiday lights turn on Nov. 19 The annual Festival of Lights at the Promenade in Bolingbrook starts Nov. 19, marking the unofficial start to the holiday season.

The village and The Promenade Bolingbrook are joining together to host the annual event beginning at 3 p.m. with the arrival of Santa at the The Promenade.

Enjoy a Santa parade, visit with Santa, holiday characters, ice sculptures, horse and wagon rides, live entertainment, crafts and more.

The official tree lighting and ceremony start at 6:15 p.m.

Throughout the holiday season, a light show will be held every evening on the hour from 5 to 9 p.m. through Dec. 31.

Annual food drive set for Saturday Nov. 19 marks the 23nd Northern Will County Harvest Saturday food drive

In one of the largest collections of its kind, community organizations in Romeoville are coming together Saturday to insure that no one goes hungry. Residents, young and old, will work together to collect items for area food pantries before the Thanksgiving holiday.

November 19 marks the 23nd Northern Will County Harvest Saturday food drive at St. Andrew the Apostle Church, 530 Kingston Ave., Romeoville.

Described as a “melting pot of people who care,” supporters of every denomination and age group come out to either drive through neighborhoods, knocking on doors

and collecting food or join the organized chaos of sorting and packing the thousands of items collected.

The event, which has become tradition for many families, is sponsored by area churches including St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church, Community Christian Church, United Presbyterian Church and The Rock Church.

The effort usually collects anywhere from 1,000 to 1,200 boxes of food, upholding a long-standing goal that “No man, child, or woman should go without a meal.”

Organizers also hope to raise enough funds to support the main food pantries that serve the immediate Romeoville area throughout the year. To help out the day of the event, all drivers need to show a driver’s license and insurance card

and students in grades five through 12 must bring a permission form.

The form is available online, as well as all the other information on Harvest Saturday at www.andrewcc. org/harvest-saturday.

Organizers are asking for residents to place non-perishable items in plastic bags outside their front door by 11 a.m. Nov. 19. One of the many volunteers will come by between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Volunteers will pick up donated items from all areas of Romeoville except Remington Apartments and High Point.

Food items in most need are those that can be used as a meal without adding much to the dish, such as soup, stews, veggies, pasta meals, tuna, peanut butter, jelly, spaghetti sauce, pasta/rice, breakfast cereal/ bars, instant potatoes, stuffing mix, flour mixes, pancake mix, flour, sugar, gelatin, etc. Toiletries are also needed including soaps, diapers,

etc. Perishable items may be donated but must be dropped off at the church. Please check expiration dates on the packaging as food pantries will not be able to accept anything that is expired.

Monetary donations also are accepted; make checks payable to St. Andrew Harvest Saturday. Volunteers are still needed, for more information call Bernadette Sedlacek at 815-886-4165, ext. 303 or come to church at 10:15 a.m. Nov. 19. If you would like to donate items, but won’t be home on that day or live outside of the area, drop-off boxes will be located in the church hallway, and at the following places through Nov. 20: Romeoville Fire Station #3, 698 North Birch Lane; Romeoville Recreation Center, 900 W. Romeo Road; Romeoville Village Hall, 1050 W. Romeo Road; and Romeoville Fire Station #1, 18 Montrose Drive.

District to hold meeting to fill vacancy Meeting will be at the Administration Center

The Board of Education for Valley View School District 365U will hold a special board meeting at 5 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 21.

Following the call to order, board members will adjourn into executive session to interview

candidates for the vacancy on the board created by the resignation of Chrystal Hansen, who has moved out of the district. The board will return to public session immediately following the executive session to appoint someone to fill the vacancy.

The board will return to public session at 7 p.m. (or later if the executive session lasts longer) to conduct business that was scheduled for the Nov. 14 meeting that

was postponed. Board members also hope to appoint someone to fill the vacancy. The meeting will be at the Administration Center, 755 Dalhart Ave. Romeoville.

Group to support immigrant concerns ‘Immigrant voters voted against hate, and we will remain strong and united’

As the immigrant community grapples with the ramifications of the presidential election, local community organization Southwest Suburban Immigrant Project is aiming to keep families informed of their rights.

The SSIP maintains that it is committed to fighting for im-

migration reform and ready to protect immigrant families from deportation.

Executive Director of SSIP Jose Vera said this election season SSIP did its best to mobilize immigrant voters in the suburbs to the polls. In its non-partisan work, volunteers knocked on 1,589 doors, made 5,665 calls, registering more than 500 new voters, to make sure people participated in this election.

“The election results are not what we expected, but it is important to note that in Illinois the

immigrant community showed up to the polls and we delivered,” said Vera. “Immigrant voters voted against hate, and we will remain strong and united. We are not going to accept any policies that tear families apart, and we will be in the front lines doing whatever it takes to protect immigrant families in the suburbs.”

Vera said one of their main concerns are for the children who are afraid they will be separated from their families. The SSIP will soon be announcing community meetings to bring the community together to re-

flect on the election results and discuss how to move forward.

“There is no room for bigotry in our community,” said Vera.

“The suburban immigrant community is resilient, we are not going anywhere, and we will continue to fight for what is right.”

The SSIP plans to announce massive “Know Your Rights” trainings throughout the suburbs in an effort to prepare people for any possible outcome.

Democracy & our very vulnerable future ‘The election season is pure spectacle, full of sound and fury’

BY ROBERT C. KOEHLER TRIBUNE CONTENT AGENCY It was a moment as tiny as marking a ballot - those two minutes of the second debate, when the presidential election hung suspended mid-diatribe and the candidates let go of their opponent’s flaws long enough to honor a bit of common humanity.

No big deal. Yeah, I know.

But as the thing winds down to the day of reckoning, and a sense of lost values and lost democracy overwhelms me - the election season is pure spectacle, full of sound and fury (signifying nothing?) - I find myself going back to those two minutes over and over, trying to understand why they hit me with such force.

The second debate, possibly the ugliest playground fight of the three, was conducted in a “town hall” format, with a preselected audience of independent voters sharing the stage with the candidates, and at intervals an audience member was invited to ask the candidates a question.

The debate was virtually over when moderator Martha Raddatz announced that “we’ve sneaked in one more question” and a man in the audience stood up.

“My question to both of you,” he said, “is, regardless of the current rhetoric, would either of you name one positive thing that you respect in one another?”

What?

The moment seemed almost parental. Maybe in a way it was: a corralling of two out-of-control youngsters into respectable behavior.

In the scant mention I’ve read about it, the question, unsurprisingly, has been dismissed as trite and nicey-nice and irrelevant to the absolutely serious matter of whether Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump should be the next, oh God, president, the leader of the most powerful nation on Earth, yada yada . . .

Nevertheless, there was a palpable, if temporary, change in the dynamic of the situation.

The palpable disgust each candidate exuded, without restraint, toward the other one - the sterile stump blather: “Yo, America, I’m way better than that fool over there” - quieted down. The debate was suddenly unscripted. The moment was live. They were both vulnerable.

Clinton jumped in. “I think that’s a very fair and important question,” she said. “Look, I respect his children. His children are incredibly able and devoted, and I think that says a lot about Donald. I don’t agree with nearly anything else he says or does, but I do respect that. And I think that is something that as a mother and a grandmother is very important to me.”

She went on a little more, reverting to stump-speech mode: “So I believe that this election has become in part so - so conflict-oriented, so intense because there’s a lot at stake. . . .” Etc., etc.

Then Trump answered: “I will say this about Hillary. She doesn’t quit. She doesn’t give up. I respect that. I tell it like it is. She’s a fighter. I disagree with

much of what she’s fighting for. I do disagree with her judgment in many cases.

But she does fight hard, and she doesn’t quit, and she doesn’t give up. And I consider that to be a very good trait.”

And that’s it. As I say, no big deal, except . . . I couldn’t stop thinking about a quote I once heard: You’re as close to God as you are to the person you like the least.

What had just happened stirred awake a different sort of consciousness, or so it seemed.

And it was gone in a moment and had no effect on the outcome of the race or what the next four years will bring or the sport-and-spectacle media coverage that refuses to let up or the actual issues that matter about the nation’s future - war, poverty, racism, environmental exploitation - or, anything else. But still, there it was, a moment of interruption to the national hooting contest, a disruption of the national certainty that hatred fixes so firmly into place.

And I thought about the time, many years ago, when my great nephew Joey was a newborn and I held him for the first time.

“But still,” I later wrote, “this is what I thought, that there was a quality to Joey’s helplessness that seemed more godlike than anything else I had ever encountered. What if, I thought, the nature of God were openness and helplessness? What if destructive power were a human quality, not God’s?”

The point I’m struggling to make, here at the brink of the 2016 election, is that our future is the newborn we hold in our arms, vulnerable and dependent on us and deserving the best.

I quiet my own certainties as I think about this and acknowledge that what I don’t know is infinitely greater than what I do know, or think I do.

And the mark I will make on my ballot is so much smaller than the pledge I make right now, to work for - to nurture - peace no matter who is elected.

Practice these safety tips to ensure a happy holiday Safety tips include avoiding displaying gifts from window view AT HOME Don’t display holiday gifts where they can be seen from a window or doorway. Store gifts before you go away on a holiday trip.

If you go out for the evening, turn on lights, radio, or television so the house or apartment appears to be occupied. Be wary of strangers soliciting for charitable donations. They may attempt to take advantage of people’s generosity during the holidays. Ask for identification, how donated funds are used, if contributions are tax de-

ductible, etc. If you aren’t satisfied with the answers, don’t contribute.

Use only fire resistant ornaments on a holiday tree, and make sure that the Christmas tree lights are in good working order. Don’t leave the lights on overnight or when you are away from home.

If you have house guests, advise them of your security precautions and make sure they follow them.

SHOPPING Shop before dark if possible.

When shopping at night, go with a friend or family member. Never park in an unlit area or parking lot, no matter how convenient it is.

Pay attention to anyone who appears to be loitering in the parking lot and remain alert at all times.

Thieves will target victims who are distracted or on their cell phones and may even create a dis-

traction themselves to pickpocket or steal. Lock your packages and gifts in your vehicle’s trunk. Keep your vehicle’s doors locked and windows closed. Don’t overburden yourself with packages. Have your key in your hand when walking to your vehicle. Consider carrying your purse under your coat. If possible, carry a cellular telephone at all times in case of an emergency.

Never leave your purchases unattended, even for a few minutes, especially in a parking lot or crowded store.

Avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Pay for purchases with a check or credit card, when possible. Ensure that children are not left alone in video arcades, toy stores or restrooms; predators are on the prowl for unattended children. Point out security guards, so your child knows where to go for help, if lost.

Local QB gets chance to end career how he wants

As the Northern Illinois University football team took on Toledo at the first-ever football game played at the home of the Chicago White Sox – now named Guaranteed Rate Field – it did so with quarterback Anthony Maddie on the sideline in a walking boot.

Maddie had injured his ankle in the game the previous week against Bowling Green, was a game-time decision and tried to go, but was ruled out just before kickoff. He still hopes to return to the field this season in the Huskies’ final two games.

Injured and on the sidelines is unfortunately a position Maddie has found himself in a lot during his days in DeKalb, however, for a five game stint during the middle of this season, the Plainfield native found himself exactly where he always wanted to be – as a starting quarterback for a Division-I college football team.

Maddie, a fifth-year senior, replaced the injured Drew Hare and led Northern on a 3-2 run.

“It felt great. That first game as a starter was one of the best experiences I have ever had,” Maddie said. “It has been a lot of fun just being the guy and preparing and getting ready to go out and help my team win games as a starter. It is something I have never experienced before.”

As the starter, Maddie completed 105 of 175 passes for 1,213 yards and eight touchdowns. He rushed 82 for 575 yards and another seven scores.

When Hare went down this season, NIU head coach Rod Carey and the Huskies’ coaching staff decided to go with Maddie over redshirt sophomore Ryan Graham.

“That was big,” Maddie said of the decision. “At times when you

are not the starter you wonder how much confidence the guys on the team and the coaching staff have in you, but that was proof that they did have that confidence in me and it’s a good feeling they let me go out there and be the guy.”

Prior to getting the call, Maddie suffered through highs and lows in his football career, including missing out on a chance to start a year ago when Hare went down with an injury. Maddie had season-ending surgery earlier in the campaign and was not able to step in.

“Last year all the guys went down and when Drew went down, I wasn’t even there because I was out for the whole season. I thought that was my opportunity and I missed out,” Maddie said. “My faith is very important to me and I kept praying and I felt like this is what I was supposed to be doing with my life at the time and I always had faith I would get an opportunity. I never wanted it to be because someone went down, but I had faith that eventually I would have a shot to help my team. I also have a lot of family and friends that have supported me when things weren’t going the way I wanted. When I came into college, it wasn’t what I expected, obviously. It wasn’t what I was hoping for, but when I got down, I had my parents and my family that were always there for me.”

In high school, Maddie led Joliet Catholic Academy to the Class 5A championship game as a sophomore, but transferred after that season to pass-friendly Aurora Christian, where he won a state title his senior season. That year he passed for 3,799 yards and 52 touchdowns, while rushing for 1,117 yards and 18 scores on the ground, it was the second most total yardage in a season in IHSA history. Flyers rally for win over N. Michigan Lewis University junior forward Nick Norton (Downers Grove, Ill./ Downers Grove North) scored 15 of his team-best 18 points in the second half to help the Flyer men’s basketball team rally from a ninepoint deficit in the final 13 minutes and defeat Northern Michigan, 87-83, at Neil Carey Arena on Sunday (Nov. 13).

Norton was one of four Flyers in double figures, joining senior guard Miles Simelton (Oswego, Ill./Oswego), sophomore swingman Delaney Blaylock (Wyoming, Mich./Godwin Heights) and junior forward Cristen Wilson (Cleveland, Ohio/John Hay).

Simelton had four three-pointers and finished with 17 points, while Blaylock had 14 points and a team-best eight rebounds. Wilson picked up 12 points and seven rebounds (6 offensive).

With the win, Lewis improves

to 1-1 on the campaign, while the Wildcats fall to 1-1 on the season.

As a team, Lewis shot 45.7% (32for-70) from the field and 31.8% (7-for-22), while Northern Michigan connected on 41.8% (28-for67) of its attempts and 43.2% (16for-37) from long range.

A game earlier, Lewis fell short despite having three players register double-doubles and rallying from an 11-point, second-half deficit as Michigan Tech earned the 80-75 (OT) regional victory over the host Flyers in the season opener at Neil Carey Arena on Saturday (Nov. 12) night.

Lewis sophomore swingman Delaney Blaylock (Wyoming, Mich./Godwin Heights) had a game-high 24 points along with 11 rebounds to lead the Flyers.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL The Great Lakes Valley Conference announced on Monday (Nov. 14) that the No. 15 Lewis University women’s volleyball team has swept the final Baden / GLVC Player of the Week Awards for the period ending November 13th.

Lewis junior middle hitter Aly Schneider (Granger, Ind./Penn) became the first player in conference history to earn Offensive Player of the Week honors four times in a single season, while redshirt libero Nicole Yuede (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell North) earns her third career Defensive Player of the Week award.

Schneider averaged 4.33 kills-

per-set and had a team-best 39 kills and hitting percentage of .578 (39 kills, 2 errors, 64 attacks) in three matches. She was dominant in a four-game win over UW-Parkside (Nov. 8) with a match-high 21 kills and hitting percentage of .556 (21-1-36) against the Rangers.

Her hot hand continued into the Flyers’ match with Indianapolis (Nov. 11) with a flawless hitting percentage of .833 (10-0-12). That performance keyed Lewis to a rally-scoring era record team hitting percentage of .480 (39-3-75) in the three-game sweep.

“Aly is amazing,” Lewis head women’s volleyball coach Lorelee Smith said. “She’s a hard worker, but most importantly, she’s a smart player.

“Aly stays within herself and by doing that, she makes our entire team better.”

He had to sit out his first year in DeKalb because of NCAA transfer rules. In 2014, Maddie appeared in nine games as a dual-threat quarterback, where he passed for 227 yards and rushed 44 times for 201 yards with one rushing touchdown.

With all that happened in his

career, NIU offensive coordinator and former University of St. Francis head coach Mike Uremovich said he was happy for Maddie to get the chance to start.

“I am genuinely happy for him.

To go through what he has gone through, he could have hung it up a few times,” Uremovich said.

“He has earned the opportunity for this. He kept working and he

got the opportunity and made the most of the opportunity and that is all you can ask for in life. He will be successful down the road in whatever he chooses to do because of his work ethic.”

Maddie said giving up football was never an option for him.

“It is hard to quit and just say ‘I’m done’ when you have all these guys that you care about and that care about you. You don’t get this anywhere else. We have 108 guys on this team and this is something special,” he said. “I have talked to my parents a lot about all of this and they said at the very least I am getting experience for what the real world is like. It is going to be tough out there.”

In fact, Maddie wanted so bad to get on the field this season, he attempted a switch to wide receiver just before the season started.”

“I was just trying to figure out a way to play. I just love football,” Maddie said. “Coach Carey and I discussed the best way to get on the field for my senior year.”

Maddie caught one pass on the season for nine yards.

While Maddie has stats in the passing, rushing and receiving game this season for the Huskies, his legacy with NIU may have been established before he got the LEWIS FROM PAGE 13 and to be honored right before the conference tournament is awesome,” Smith said. “She controls the court, understands the concept of team defense and is a big factor in our team’s success this season.”

A lot of these young guys may not be in the situation they want to be. It was a long four and a half years,” Maddie said. “The main thing is you have to always have faith. I have a lot of friends that play college football and it is rarely what you hoped for. This has taught me to have faith and keep working hard and eventually you will get a shot and when you do, you have to make the most of it.”

Uremovich said Maddie’s perseverance is something young players can learn from.

“That is the hardest thing for young players. We never want them to be happy where they are at, but to be patient where they are at,” he said. “So many guys expect to come in the door and expect to play as a freshman or a sophomore and that’s great, but it doesn’t always work out that way.

We just want them to keep working and they will get a chance.

“Any time a freshman or sophomore comes into the office down about playing time, we can just look to him and tell them to look at what he did.

WOMEN’S SWIMMING Saturday afternoon the Lewis University women’s swim team was able to beat both Findlay and Hillsdale in head to head competition. The Flyers beat the University of Findlay 128-77 and beat Hillsdale College 135-69.50.

Shannon Sullivan (Elmhurst, Ill./York ) had a good individual performance in the 100 and 200 freestyle (53.71 and 1:56.24) finishing first in both. Head Swim Coach Roger Karns said of Sullivan, “Her excellent swims in her individual events may have been surpassed by her strong come from behind anchor leg on the 400 Free Relay.” The team was able to take first in the 400 yard freestyle (3:39.48) thanks to great swimming from Kinsey Coble (Lafayette, Ind./Jefferson), Courtney Duy (Buckeye, Ariz./Millennium), Brittany Kamper (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg), and Sullivan.

Coach Karns gave credit to the relay team saying, “Kinsey, Brittany, and Courtney did a great job keeping Shannon in range and she jumped on the opportunity.”

HERE ARE FIVE OF THE MOST COMMON SHOPPERS YOU’LL SEE: 1. THE FAMILY There are a couple of subgroups here. Either the one where screaming, tired kids are brought along while the parent desperately tries to find a particular item at a bargain, or the ones with SEAL Team 6-like coordination who aim to grab all of the assigned items before heading to the extraction point (i.e. the cash register).

2. THE HOARDER It’s Black Friday, not Y2K. This person is reminiscent of the guy who felt the need to barricade

himself in a bunker in the middle of the woods with 20 years’ worth of freeze-dried chipped beef. The hoarder seems paranoid about not taking full advantage of Black Friday and attempts to grab every last one of a particular sales item. Then after the Friday flurry subsides, they’ll either bring back all the extras they don’t need or sell them online.

3. THE PLANNER They know the store. They know the route. They know what is where, and they don’t spend too much time basking in the glory of grabbing an item off the shelf because they are too busy heading to the next one. Better be quick if you’re up against one.

4. THE ACTION SEEKERS These people are more obstruction than competition. They like the energy of being in the middle of the madness, though they may only be shopping for a DVD. They tend to stand out in the crowd because they are the only ones with a smile on their face. (But if they aren’t careful, another shopper may wipe it off for them.)

The village of Romeoville is looking for residents to share their vision of Romeoville’s future at a public workshop.

Village officials want to know the big ideas out there and are inviting community members to share thoughts and ideas and participate in interactive activities designed to help craft a vision for Romeoville.

The Envision Romeoville public workshop is 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17, at Romeoville Village Hall, 1050 W. Romeo Road.

Residents should view the comprehensive planning process and follow the project’s progress at https://bigpictureromeoville.com/. The website chronicles updates to Romeoville’s comprehensive plans and provides access to documents, photos and an opportunity to share feedback and ideas in a variety of formats. Users may also download a mobile app or sign up for emails to stay informed throughout the process and participate in an online community survey.
