U.S. Supreme Court declines to hear Drew Peterson appeal Denial means the Supreme Court will not hear an appeal of Peterson’s case JOLIET – Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow was pleased but not surprised to learn today that Drew Peterson’s petition to appeal his case to the U.S. Supreme Court has been denied.

The U.S. Supreme Court announced it has denied Peterson’s Petition for Writ of Certiorari. The denial means the U.S. Supreme Court will not hear an appeal of Peterson’s case, a decision that effectively ends the direct appeal of any issues in his case. The defendant still has the option of pursuing other post-conviction relief in the courts.

thoroughly reviewing all issues raised by the defense on appeal, scrutinizing the entire trial record, and hearing oral arguments, found no error in the trial court record.

ruling also included a detailed review of State’s Attorney Glasgow’s lawful use of hearsay statements from Peterson’s murdered third wife, Kathleen Savio, as well as his missing fourth wife, Stacy Peterson. The State’s Attorney entered these statements into evidence at trial under the legal concept of Forfeiture by Wrongdoing, which allows prosecutors to use certain hearsay statements from witnesses if the defendant deliberately made those witnesses unavailable to prevent them from testifying.

State’s Attorney Glasgow used those hearsay statements against Peterson at trial under rules affirmed by the U.S. Supreme Court in Giles v. California and by the Illinois Supreme Court in People v. Hanson.

“The statements I lawfully used as evidence to convict Drew Peterson at his murder trial were both relevant and probative,” said State’s Attorney Glasgow. “Peterson thought the threats he made to Kathleen Savio – that he would kill her and make it look like an accident – had died with her. And he thought the statements he had made to his young fourth wife, Stacy Peterson, had vanished along with her in 2007. But by applying the constitutionally sound concept of Forfeiture by Wrongdoing, Kathleen was able to testify from the grave against her murderer, and Stacy was able to refute Peterson’s alibi for Kathleen’s murder.”

The State’s Attorney continued: “The many successes in the appeals process have been vindications of my decision to pursue a prosecution that initially had been criticized by many legal professionals and those in the media. More importantly, they have been victories for the families of Kathleen Savio and Stacy Peterson against a notorious murderer who always felt he could act outside and above the law.”

Health Dept.: Keep guard up against mosquitoes Mosquitoes Carrying West Nile Virus Remain a Threat Until First Frost The DuPage County Health Department (DCHD) has confirmed the first human death due to West Nile virus (WNV) infection.

A DuPage County resident over the age of 65 who became ill in early September with WNV has died.

There have been 14 human cases reported in DuPage County in 2018.

“The report of a death is a sad reminder that it’s still important to protect yourself, protect your family against West Nile virus,” said Karen Ayala, DCHD Executive Director.

Residents are reminded to “Fight the Bite” and follow the 4 Ds of Defense: • Drain: Drain those items that collect standing water around your home, yard or business. Scrub and refill pet water dishes and bird baths regularly.

• Defend: Use an insect repellent containing DEET

when outdoors and reapply according to directions.

• Dress: Wear long pants, long sleeves and closed toe shoes when outside to cover the skin.

• Dusk to Dawn: Wear repellent outdoors during these prime times for mosquito activity.

The Health Department’s Personal Protection Index (PPI) remains at Level 3 (high risk) because of the number of mosquito batches testing positive for WNV. Level 3 indicates high numbers of infected mosquitoes in most areas, and multiple human cases of WNV disease in DuPage County.

The PPI provides a real-time snapshot of WNV activity, which ranges from Level 0 (zero) meaning no risk, to Level 3 announcing a high level of risk with multiple human cases of WNV. The PPI is updated every Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. throughout the WNV season.

While most people infected with WNV do not develop any symptoms, approximately one in five people infected with WNV will develop symptoms such as fever, headache, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea, or rash.

Less than one percent will develop a serious neurologic illness such as encephalitis or meningi-

tis (inflammation of the brain or surrounding tissues).

People over the age of 60, and those with certain medical conditions, such as cancer, diabetes, hypertension, kidney disease, and organ transplants are at greater risk for serious illness, and rarely may progress to coma and death.

Anyone who experiences symptoms that cause concern should contact their health care provider.

The Health Department continues to monitor WNV activity by collecting and testing mosquitoes from traps located throughout the county from May through October, the West Nile virus season.

These six libraries, known as the Pinnacle Library Cooperative, work together to provide over 1.3 million items to their customers. Romeoville recognizes veterans, service members with program Romeoville Recognizes Veterans and Service Members with New Banner Program Romeoville is offering a new way to remember, honor, or thank a veteran in your life.

The Veteran & Service Member Banner Program is a $45, 24” x 62” double-sided vinyl banner that will be displayed on the light poles in front of Village Hall May - Nov. Orders must be received and paid for in person at Village Hall by January 1st of each year. Only 40 banners will be hung per year and, at the end of November, the banner will be given to the individuals who purchased them. Additional banners for home use can be purchased for $45 each.

There is a one pole per household, per year limit. First time applicants will get priority over returning applicants.

“Our veterans are very important to us and this is a unique way to share those special people with the entire community,” explained Mayor John Noak.

To qualify for the program, the veteran must be a current resident of Romeoville or, if deceased, had previously lived in Romeoville. Part of the proceeds of this program will go towards the Veterans Commission scholarship fund as well as paying for veterans’ assistance programs.

One of the highlights of the year at Romeoville HS is the Homecoming Assembly.

The Assembly includes the announcement of the Homecoming Court members, the Tug-O-War between the four classes, and the usual school spirit-raising events.

The highlight is always the performance by the Drum Line, Cheerleaders, and the Band. Each year the Assembly it gets a little bigger, better and more ambitious.

Questions Asked and Answered at Lukancic

Lukancic 7th graders have been busy in September writing letters to those who serve our nation and community.

It started with the social studies students writing letters to those serving abroad in the military, and then grew to English language arts students writing letters to police officers and fire fighters in Romeoville.

One of the letters was written by Kealsey Haun to Romeoville Officer Gary Augustine, who was also Kealsey’s DARE instructor at R.C. Hill Elementary. Rather than write back with answers to Kealsey’s questions, Officer Augustine paid a surprise visit to the Kealsey and the students in Mrs. Kathleen Ydnekew’s and Mrs. Kimberly Cotto’s classroom.

Kealsey had questions about law enforcement but also had important questions about Officer Augustine’s preference in football teams.

Thanks to Officer Augustine for visiting for about 30 minutes answering all sorts of questions about his job from the Lukancic students.

Lincoln turns tide in debates against Douglas in Galesburg

BY OWEN W. MUELDER FOR THE REGISTER-MAIL OF GALESBURG The Lincoln-Douglas Debates are among the most important events in the United State’s history.

The seven debates were conducted throughout Illinois in the summer and fall of 1858. Not only significant in their own time, the debates have since been recognized as an ultimate example of our political process which has continued throughout the centuries as most office seekers nationwide debate each other every campaign season.

Stephen A. Douglas and Abraham Lincoln were respectively the Democratic and Republican party candidates for the U.S. Senate. The primary question these men discussed was whether slavery should be extended into the nation’s territories.

Lincoln was not an abolitionist, but he loathed slavery and looked forward to a time when it would disappear. He also maintained that it should be forbidden from being established in new states that desired to join the Union. Douglas defended the concept of “Popular Sovereignty,” whereby the people who resided in western territories should have the right to decide if slavery would be allowed.

The slavery question was so important then that no other political issue was raised by either candidate during the debates.

Public oratory was popular in the 19th century; both candidates often used harsh language and outspoken mud-slinging to characterize each other. People attending these contests also shouted out derogatory comments and catcalls toward both men. Spectators came from every part of Illinois to hear the speakers and newspapers throughout the country published detailed accounts.

The first debate, in Ottawa, was held on a blisteringly hot day in the third week of August. Most historians agree Douglas put Lincoln on the de-

fensive; consequently, the “Little Giant” appeared to be the winner.

However, at the second contest in Freeport, Douglas was put on the defensive. Lincoln asked Douglas how he could reconcile his “Popular Sovereignty” stance with the Supreme Court’s Dred Scott decision, which ruled that slaveholders had the right to introduce slavery into the territories. If Douglas responded that he supported the Dred Scott decision he would please Southerners, but if he stood by his “Popular Sovereignty” position, most Southerners would never forgive him.

His reply that day has since been dubbed the “Freeport Doctrine.”

Douglas responded to Lincoln’s query by saying the people who settled a territory would determine whether or not slavery could exist there. Put back on his heels, he hoped his answer would satisfy all parties, but it failed.

The third debate, in mid-September in downstate Jonesboro, was poorly attended. In southern Illinois, slavery was popular with many citizens. Lincoln finally came out more forcefully in Jonesboro, but he faced a hostile crowd and was characterized by Douglas as a radical. This debate is considered by most scholars a somewhat inglorious affair. The fourth debate, in Charleston, was on neutral ground for both men and is remembered as a stalemate.

On a chilly day at Knox College’s Old Main in Galesburg, the fifth debate on Oct. 7 drew more spectators than any of the other six contests.

Lincoln scholars are nearly unanimous in describing this debate as the one where Lincoln found his legs, displaying a confidence he had not shown before.

Lincoln knew Galesburg was an abolitionist town, known for harboring fugitives on the Underground Railroad. Standing erect and selfassured on a stage above the crowd, Lincoln spoke for the first time at length about the immorality of slavery.

“I confess myself as belonging to that class in the country that contemplates slavery as a moral, social and political evil,” he said. Paraphrasing Henry Clay, he accused Douglas of “blowing out the moral lights around us.”

Lincoln biographer Benjamin Thomas described the Galesburg contest as the turning point for Lincoln. One Boston newspaper reporter described Lincoln as “eloquent and bold.” Lincoln was so successful emphasizing this moral theme in Galesburg that he repeated it at the sixth debate in Quincy.

Douglas, often a heavy drinker, was described as “tight”and spoke slowly, hammering home his contention that decisions about slavery should be left to local and state governments. In the final debate, at Alton, which was a rehashing of the previous points, Douglas, his voice fraying, seemed worn down. An energetic Lincoln said the Declaration of Independence applied to all men, not just some, and the slavery question was between right and wrong.

In November, the state Legislature re-elected Douglas by 54 to 46, but the debates catapulted Lincoln’s name and reputation across the nation; the Republican Party nominated him for the presidency two years later. His election victory proved to be a significant watershed in American history.

BOUND Bolingbrook earns fifth win of the season, becomes playoff eligible

Two years ago the Bolingbrook football team had a narrow win at Lockport. That season, however, the Raiders didn’t make the playoffs. Which snapped a 24-year playoff steak. Bolingbrook was 4-5 that season, while Lockport was 6-4 with a first round playoff loss, after opening 6-2.

But the past two years have brought a reversal of fortune for the two programs, who have both won Class 8A state championships. When they met last week in a SouthWest Suburban Conference matchup it was the Raiders emerging with a 39-7 victory before a Homecoming crowd, that was held down because of pregame rain, on Friday, Sept. 28 at the Lockport Stadium.

Senior running back Anthony Williams, Jr. scored four touchdowns to lead the Raiders (5-1, 3-1) to the victory, which made them playoff eligible. On the other side

the Porters (0-6, 0-4) have qualified for the playoffs only one time since 2011. In fact, Bolingbrook is now 12-4 since the start of 2016, while the Porters are now 2-13.

Still Raider coach John Ivlow knows his team can’t make the type of mistakes it did against Lockport come playoff time. If they do, it could be another first round exit.

“Anthony was great and the counter play was good for us,” Ivlow said of Williams. “But I’m livid with the mistakes we made. From the penalties, to the (3) turnovers and the (3) missed extra points. It’s those little things at the wrong time that hurt us.

“We’re 5-1 and we’ll take it. But those things have to be corrected and we will watch the film and point everything out. Really good teams don’t make those mistakes.”

On the flip side, Lockport coach Dan Starkey was happy how his team hung in there.

“We came out and battled hard and really only gave up two defensive touchdowns in the first half,” Starkey said. “But Bolingbrook

gashed us in the third quarter with the rushing game. They have a lot of big, tall, lean, but strong players.”

One of those was Williams, who scored on TD runs of three and eight yards in the second quarter, and on scampers of 39 and 67-yards in the second half. His last touchdown made it 39-0 with 11:44 to play in the game and he finished with 14 carries for 215 yards.

“Not since youth football” Williams said when asked if he ever had for touchdowns in a game. “It felt good, but it’s a credit to our linemen, the best in the state. I saw the

big holes and executed. My stats don’t matter as long as the team wins.”

Despite Williams offensive explosion and a pair of special teams TD’s, Lockport’s defense made some plays against the Raiders.

Senior defensive back Ryan Michalowski had a first half interception. Then to open the second half. sophomore linebacker Joseph Suchorabski recovered an onside kick. Junior linebacker Joseph Kenney and junior defensive lineman Brandon Little added second half fumble recoveries for the Porters.

On the flip side, the Porters lost a pair of fumbles and had their initial punt of the game blocked by Elisha Armstrong and returned 30 yards for a TD by fellow senior Cameron Mitchell. Armstrong and Mitchell also recovered fumbles and junior Antonio King added the Raiders other touchdown on a 45-yard punt return to make it 33-0 midway through the third quarter.

“He got me from behind and I just need to make sure I have a hold of the ball high and tight there,” Voulgaris said of the fumble. “The thing about this team is that everyone has the biggest heart and is trying their best. We just have to keep getting better, keep working hard and things will fall into place.”

Things will be tough for Lockport this week as it hosts the state’s top ranked team, Lincoln-Way East, on Friday at 7 p.m. for Senior Night.

Road games against Peoria Notre Dame at Peoria Stadium, and against Bradley-Bourbonnais end the season.

Bolingbrook traveled to Thornridge this Thursday, Oct. 4 and then hosts Thornton for Senior Night on Friday, Oct. 12 before ending the regular season the following Friday at Lincoln-Way East.

“I’ve said all season that we have great kids, who have a great attitude,” Starkey said. “They don’t quit and they work hard. We will be back at it and we will continue to take it one game at a time and we just have to keep our heads up.”
