Fall Fest: Explosion of Color takes place for 3rd year Bolingbrook recreation and aquatic Complex hosts popular event once again with activities for all age groups By ryan ostry Bugle staff

@RyanOstry_BR18 rostry@buglenewspapers.com

For the third year in a row, the “Fall Fest- Explosion of Color” event took place at the Bolingbrook Recreation and Aquatic Complex. Superintendent of Facilities John Chase said the event usually expects between 1,000 and 2,000 people, but because of the weather, he wasn’t sure what the crowd would be. “Well we usually have between 1,000 and 2,000 people here and it does increase with size every single year,” Chase said. “Even though it’s

raining and cloudy, I think so far there’s a good amount of people here.” The family friendly event took place Saturday and had more than 20 activities for spectators to enjoy. Most of the events that were available lasted the entire four hours, with Chase saying how popular some of them are every single year. “We have a lot of family games that are running here today,” Chase said. “Some of the more popular ones are the tricycle races, rock-climbing and the photo station.” On top of the usual events, a new event was added for this year. “Mobile Axe Throwing Trailer” gained popularity as the fest went on, with children showcasing their skills and accuracy trying to pinpoint the axe to the bullseye. Fountaindale Library’s Bookmobile made an appearance for kids and families to enter, giving then the library experience right at their fin-

ties,” Chase said. Pumpkin bowling, a children’s craft tent, knockdown game, teambuilding exercises, pumpkin patch, casting contest, archery, sucker pull, canoeing, bingo, ring toss, mystery box exploration, a trolley, a horse and

carriage, game tables, dance demonstration, live music from CFactor and fireworks were all also part of the third-year fest. One other event that was the ultimate Nerf zone where kids were each handed a Nerf gun and had the opportunity to run around a maze while dodging and ducking their opponents in a friendly game of Nerf war drew a lot of attention and participants. Chase said the Explosion of Color event is always a hit and popular for the community members of Bolingbrook, and he believes it keeps growing in popularity because of the family environment it offers. “Each year doing this fest we get more and more compliments which we of course love,” Chase said. “People seem to really enjoy the variety of activities we have here, and we try to pick activities that will hit all age groups so I’m really happy with the turn out and how it’s gone every single year.”

County reminds residents of services available to people suffering substance use disorder we understand that arresting people does not help with this crisis of drug use In light of the recent rise in overdoses and overdose deaths in Will County, County Executive Larry Walsh wants to remind residents of two important programs available to those suffering substance use disorder: Safe Passage and the Narcan Distribution Program. “We have worked with our partners across the county to set up these lifesaving programs for people who are battling addiction,” Walsh said. “Dr. Kathleen Burke, our director of substance use initiatives, continues to distribute and train anyone and everyone on the use of Narcan and works with our participating police departments through the Safe Passage program to get people into treatment.” Last weekend, nine people overdosed on cocaine laced with fentanyl in Joliet and Lockport. Four people in Joliet and one in Lockport died from these overdoses due to extreme potency of fentanyl. “People do not know what they

Substance use is a chronic disease that can be treated but people need to reach out for help.” Dr. Burke is offering free Narcan to anyone who needs it. She can train family members, any local organization, or anyone from the general public about addiction, the opiate crisis, and how to administer Narcan, or naloxone, a powerful antidote that can reverse the effects of an overdose. “We want to get Narcan into the hands of as many people as possible,” she said. “Overdoses can happen anywhere at any time so the more

The Good Samaritan Law protects bystanders who render aid to a person suffering an overdose so I urge people to get trained and carry Narcan.” Because of the challenges to people accessing treatment, Will County has worked with local police departments and the Sheriff’s’ office to create Safe Passage, a program that directly connects people to treatment. Participants simply go to the partnering police department and ask for help. After a simple interview, which includes a warrant check and search, the participant will be escorted to treatment through Family Guidance Centers.

It s important to agree on emergency fund amount Your emergency fund is really more about peace of mind dear dave, I know you talk about having an emergency fund of three to six months of expenses set aside. My husband and I are having a difficult time agreeing on exactly how much we should set aside for emergencies. How do you determine the exact amount? The exact amount you have in your emergency fund – whether it’s three, four, five, or six months of expenses – is really more about peace of mind than anything else. Still, there are a few practical things to consider. If you both have very stable jobs, you’d probably be OK saving three or four months of expenses. But if one of you is self-employed, makes

most of their money through commissions, or only one of you works outside the home, it would make more sense to have five or six months of expenses set aside. Of course, you can always compromise while leaving room for growth. There’s nothing wrong starting out with three months of expenses saved, then adding more as time goes by. The main thing is that you’re both in agreement, and you both feel safe with the amount of money in your emergency fund!

I’m new to investing, and recently I began putting money into growth stock mutual funds inside a Roth IRA. On my last statement, it said that my investment had grown. Can you explain how it grew? In most cases, you’ll have anywhere from 90 to 200 different company’s stocks in a growth stock mutual fund. Over a period of time, some of them will go up and some will go down. If the overall effect is

lewis win 12th game of the season, pair of flyers earn great lakes valley Conference weekly awards

The sixth ranked Lewis women’s volleyball team extended its winning streak to six matches with a sweep of Quincy on Saturday afternoon at Neil Carey Arena. The Flyers improve to 12-1, 2-0 in the GLVC while the Hawks drop to 5-10, 0-2 GLVC. Lewis used a 7-2 run midway through the opening set to break an 11-all tie to take a five-point lead on a kill from Ava Venema (Westmont, Ill./Timothy Christian). The Flyers stretched the lead to 23-16 after an error from Emily Rehagen. Quincy refused to go quietly scoring three straight points to cut Lewis’ lead to 23-19 after a kill from Sarah Brown. The Flyers scored the final two points to take the opener 25-19. Lewis hit only .195 in the first stanza but held the Hawks to a negative .024 attack percentage. The Flyers led wire-to-wire in the middle frame building a 13-point lead in the stanza on its way to a 25-12 win. Alexandra Preuss (Elmhurst, Ill./York) and Colleen Wilhelm (Euclid, Ohio/Lake Catholic) led Lewis with four kills apiece in the set. The Flyers hit .467 in the frame with 14 kills against zero errors in 30 attempts. The third set saw eight ties and two lead changes. Lewis gained some separation thanks to a 10-2 run that broke a tie at 10. Preuss had three aces in the run while Megan Schlechte (Strasburg,

Ill./Stewardson-Strasburg) added a pair of kills. The Flyers went onto win the frame 25-15 to complete the sweep. Venema led the offensive attack with eight kills while Preuss added seven kills and Schlechte and Wilhelm finished with six kills each. Mikah Freppon (Cold Spring, Ky./ Newport Central Catholic) dished out 28 assists and Ronni Katarzynski (Winfield, Ill./West Chicago) had 20 digs. Lewis finished the match with a hitting percentage of .290 (37k/8e/100ta). The Flyers also had five aces, 50 digs and seven total blocks. • The Great Lakes Valley Conference announced Sept. 30 that Lewis University Venema and Katarzynski have been selected as the Baden GLVC Women’s Volleyball Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, for the period ending September 29. This is the second time that Katarzynski has won the award, while this is the first time that Venema has won the Offensive Player of the Week honor. Both were instrumental in helping Lewis to victories over Truman (Sept. 27) and Quincy (Sept. 28) last week. Venema averaged a team-best 3.5 kills-per-set and hit .636 (21 kills, 0 errors, 33 attempts) in the two victories. Her most impressive perfor-
