Halloween Fest Join the Romeoville Recreation Department and the Romeoville Area Chamber of Commerce from 5:30 to 8:30 pm, Friday, Oct. 27 at Village Park (900 W.Romeo Rd.) for the 2017 Halloween Fest.

Metra station on track to open for holidays Located near intersection of 135th St., New Avenue, station will be 1st new stop on Heritage Corridor route A long-time goal for the village of Romeoville, its new Metra station, is nearing completion.

Located near the intersection of 135th Street and New Avenue, the Romeoville Station will be the first new stop on the Heritage Corridor since Metra’s creation in 1984 and the first new stop on any Chicagoland Metra line since 2011.

Romeoville have been in discussions for years and through various grants and moving pieces the project came to fruition with the village breaking ground on the new station this past May. “Construction crews have built the platform, the parking lot is being constructed; lights are going up and landscaping is going in,” said Mayor John Noak. “We just need

Canadian National to open a pedestrian crossing.”

Noak said there a few things still left in the process, but that the project is still on target to open in late fall.

He said the village hopes to get a more definitive date from Metra soon and also plans for residents who wish to purchase a permit for parking.

The first phase of the station will have 123 parking spaces and support an advanced parking system, which will allow commuters the option to pay for their spots from their mobile phones in addition to

the traditional method.

The late fall opening will give Romeoville residents a direct connection to downtown Chicago just in time for the holiday season. Passengers on the Heritage Corridor line arrive in Chicago at Union Station.

The new station initiative began in 2008, when one of Romeoville’s largest industrial residents, Citgo Petroleum Company, was about to expand and build a new plant. At the time, the village and the company struck a deal.

In exchange for variances that allowed for an additional parking

lot to be constructed across from the plant on 135th Street, Citgo offered to lease eight acres of land to the village for a longsought Metra station.

The project is estimated at $4.9 million dollars with more than $3.9 million of the funding through CMAP’s Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement (CMAQ) Grant.

The Village of Romeoville was also fortunate to receive a supplemental grant from the Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program (ITEP) for pedestrian access from 135th St to the Station.

New restaurant to take over Applebee’s Bee Brother’s restaurant will be opening at 472 N. Weber Road

Vacant for more than four years in Romeoville, the former site of Applebee’s will now be home to a new family restaurant.

Applebee’s closed in June 2013 after filing for bankruptcy and closing eight suburban locations in the same time period.

For years there was interest in the property but no takers, until now.

The village of Romeoville recently announced that Bee Brother’s res-

taurant will be setting up shop in its place at 472 N. Weber Road, hoping to open by the end of the year.

A family restaurant serving breakfast and lunch, Bee Brothers will be the first foray into the restaurant business for the young ownership group, who also run El Ranchito Supermarket in Joliet.

“Our main goal is to use the freshest ingredients possible, which we’ll be bringing in daily from our store in Joliet,” said Spilios Theodorou, a member of the ownership group.

“We’ll have the old breakfast standards, but we will also be offering

some unique dishes to give people more options.”

Hence its name, the restaurant will serve freshly-made honey biscuits and have a bee-like theme, associating its interior with the colors of the honey producers.

Spilios also mentioned that while the group is young and new to the restaurant business, they feel they have a lot to offer, including young energy, fresh food, and new takes on dishes.

“Residents have been waiting for a new business to relocate here,” said Mayor John Noak. “I’m pleased to be able to announce this latest development in the continued commercial growth of Romeoville.”

Residents have already taken to social media regarding Romeoville new addition, welcoming a sit-

down family restaurant they believe is sorely needed, though also hoping the diner will would extend its hours to the evening.

In addition, another restaurant, La Tortuga Feliz, recently opened at 330 S. Budler Road, near the corner of Budler and Airport. La Tortuga Feliz, translated as “the happy turtle,” specializes in authentic Mexican cuisine.

“I applaud any small business owner who decides to share their passion with our community,” said Noak. “We are thrilled to be able to bring more dining options to this area of Romeoville.”

La Tortuga Feliz is now open and looks to have their grand opening celebration in the coming weeks.

Watermain work continues in Hampton Village began a rehabilitation project; budgeting $900,000 to construct a new watermain this fall

The Hampton Park area in the older section of Romeoville will continue to see watermain improvements.

Over the course of time, the Hampton Park watermain has become deficient, forcing the village to address the issue in this year’s budget. The village began a rehabilitation project; budgeting $900,000 to construct a new watermain this fall.

Work has began in the area replacing main sections of the watermain and thanks to lower costs coming in at $760,000 for this year’s project the village is opting to take advantage of the savings.

Adding the savings with budgeted funds for next year’s project will allow the village to take advantage of the existing contract and add additional streets to this year’s project timeline.

“With all the old watermain breaks over the last few years, this will help us out tremendously,” said Public Works Director Erik Bjork.

Mayor John Noak said it makes perfect sense to take money the village saved to do more this year while continuing to save on costs.

Trustee Joe Chavez said the project is a welcome achievement, moving the watermains out of the backyards and into the front yards as is done in newer subdivisions and hopes the village can continue to do more streets around the St. Andrew area.

Romeoville to split cost of wildlife trapping with residents As has become a common occurrence, the sighting of skunks and other wildlife is on the rise.

As the population of these animals continue to increase, the village of Romeoville is helping residents partner with a third-party vendor to provide trapping services, picking up a portion of the cost.

“In most places the county does this, but there has been a real boom and we were looking at ways to provide assistance with a

third party,” said Mayor John Noak.

“This way everyone knows it is a quality vendor and that there are set prices, etc.. This is the way to do it in an effective manner and help subsidize the cost for the residents.”

The village entered into a oneyear contract with T&C Trapping to provide nuisance wildlife trapping services to homeowners at a discounted rate. The trap setting fee of $105 would be a shared cost between the Village ($50) and homeowner ($55) for the first trapping at a particular address. Follow-

ing the capture of an animal, the homeowner will be charged a $95 capture fee. Any further trappings at that address would be solely the responsibility of the homeowner.

Residents can contact the Romeoville Police Department at 815-886-7219 who will put those interested into contact with T&C Trapping. The trapping agreement covers skunks, opossums, and raccoons.

“We are aware of wild animal related incidents in the village,” said Noak. “This agreement should help address the issue and if the

problem persists, we can explore further options in a year’s time.”

New gas station coming to Farm and Fleet Crews work to place gas storage tanks underground for a new gas station, Murphy Express, being constructed in the outlot of Blain’s Farm and Fleet at Weber Road.

The proposed gas station will have eight pumps and a 1,400 squarefoot convenience store.

Volunteers paint Children’s Advocacy Center Volunteers from ITW Deltar Fasteners in Frankfort and United Way of Will County recently dipped brushes into buckets to put a fresh coat of paint on the walls of what will be the new offices for the Will County Children’s Advocacy Center.

ITW and United Way volunteers spent two days painting the interior walls of the building at 304 N. Scott Street. The building will become the new home for the Will County Children’s Advocacy Center when the staff moves in at the end of November. The Center’s current building will be demolished to

make way for the new Will County Courthouse.

“This tremendous gesture by ITW and its volunteer workers put the Children’s Advocacy Center a major step closer to occupying a new building where the staff can pursue its mission of bringing hope, healing, and justice to sexually abused children,” said Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow, who chairs the Center’s Board of Directors. “Community partnerships with socially responsible corporations like ITW play an important role in enabling the Children’s Advocacy Center to con-

duct its important work on behalf of vulnerable children.”

The Will County Children’s Advocacy Center is funded in part by United Way of Will County. ITW decided to organize teams of volunteer painters after the Children’s Advocacy Center’s staff visited the company last month to encourage employees to continue their already generous participation in the annual United Way Campaign.

“It was great to be able to support and to help out locally. Community involvement is one of our core values, and it was a pleasure to serve the Children’s Advocacy Center,” said Joel R. Lee ITW United Way Division Chair.

The calm before the storm Creating peace is a complex process - and this, unfortunately, is not always obvious

BY ROBERT C. KOEHLER Tribune Content Agency Every time Donald Trump blurts or tweets a shocker - “maybe it’s the calm before the storm,” for instance - questions flood the media.

Is he serious? What did he mean?

Yes, of course, but beyond these, larger questions hover half-asked, cutting into the soul of who we are. This is painful, but not necessarily a bad thing. For me, one question that keeps emerging is: What is the relationship between Trump and the military-political system he stepped into?

That is to say, is he furthering its covert agenda (creating the conditions for more war) or, contrarily, exposing it for what it is?

Or both?

Back in February, for instance, Trump the pugnacious 14-year-old told a Reuters reporter: “I am the first one that would like to see . . . nobody have nukes, but we’re never going to fall behind any country even if it’s a friendly country, we’re never going to fall behind on nuclear power. It would be wonderful, a dream would be that no country would have nukes, but if countries are going to have nukes, we’re going to be at the top of the pack.”

America, America! It’s at the top of the pack, man. Trump puts what’s really going on into the language of the playground, delighting his base (a third of the country) and convulsing pretty much everyone else. Of course, what’s really going on is more than just bully blather. With Trump at the helm, the United States of America, the planet’s premiere superpower, is putting the planet, in the words of Republican Sen. Bob Corker, “on the path to World War Three.”

We were on that path anyway, just with more dignity and decorum. And more ambivalence. As the U.S. prepared for war it also negotiated peace: in particular, the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement, which Trump wants to decertify. Most security experts have hailed the agreement as a remarkable achievement, halting Iran’s nuclear weapons development, curtailing a nuclear arms race in the Middle East, easing tensions with the U.S. and

helping establish an international framework for creating peace.

The foreign policy establishment remains wary of Iran and considers the agreement flawed, but nonetheless crucial. Which Iran, former CIA analyst Paul Pillar asked recently, is most likely to act with destabilizing aggressiveness?

“Is it an Iran,” he wrote, “that is being reintegrated into the community of nations, that sees material benefit from negotiating restrictions on itself and then scrupulously observing those restrictions, and sees the opportunity for gaining more respectability and influence as long as it plays by the international community’s rules? Or is it an Iran that is kept isolated and punished, sees any significant agreement that it does negotiate get destroyed or reneged upon by other parties, that is the target of unending confrontation and hostility, and that is treated forever as a pariah? The answer should be obvious.”

Creating peace is a complex process - and this, unfortunately, is not always obvious. The point Pillar and others are making in support of the 2015 agreement, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, or JCPOA, is that trying to punish and dominate our enemies tends to create results that are the opposite of what we want, or claim to want.

The idea that enemies are permanent, which is how a segment of the U.S. foreign policy establishment regards Iran, hardens our national commitment to militarism. Listening to countries with whom we are at odds - working with them, finding power in solidarity with them rather than threatening to annihilate them - calls militarism into question.

We live with and build national policy around the compromise between these two ways of being in the world.

Thus, even in an agreement as mutually beneficial as the JCPOA, the U.S. maintains a state of assumed dominance: Iran has to stop its nuclear weapons development. But the nuclear arsenal of the United States and the

agreement’s other signatories, which include China, France, Russia and the United Kingdom, are not under discussion. The unspoken assumption, it seems, is that some nukes are necessary, and some countries must remain in possession of them.

All of which brings Trump’s “top of the nuclear pack” comment back into the conversation. Dominating the world, especially by possessing the most weapons of mass destruction, is by far the simplest way to understand power, and there are enormous interests in the U.S. that revere - and most importantly, benefit from - the domination outlook. Trump both promotes this agenda and exposes it to the world.

Indeed: “. . . recently we hear (an) alarming announcement by a nuclearweapon state that it intends to continuously strengthen and expand its nuclear arsenal to ensure its place ‘at the top of the pack.’”

The words are those of Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s deputy foreign minister, speaking at the U.N. General Assembly on Sept. 26, the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, who warned that the United States - which he referred to as “a certain nuclear-weapon state” - was not only modernizing its nuclear arsenal but developing low-yield bombs, which means, my God, usable nuclear weapons, and thus launching a new, global nuclear arms race.

This project, part of a trillion-dollar planned upgrade of the U.S. nuclear arsenal, began during the Obama, not the Trump, administration.

But now the world has President Trump, commander-by-impulse and reckless reality-TV host with the power to launch war. He wants to decertify the Iran deal and declare it not to be in the country’s interests. Is he exposing the final phase of an international politics based on military dominance?

Here’s another question he forces us to ask: How is universal nuclear disarmament possible without a nucleararmed, external force imposing it?

This is not just a question to be pondered by the 122 nations that recently voted in favor of the U.N. Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.

Those who boycotted the vote hold the answer.

Eural Mac’ McLaughlin was honored with a Lifetime Service Award by wrestling Hall of Fame

Eural “Mac” McLaughlin was a 5-foot-1, 118-pound quarterback his senior year at Dunbar High School in 1959.

In his final high school game, McLaughlin faced CVS star Dick Butkus, who promptly spit in his face mask from about eight yards away.

It was the last time anyone disrespected McLaughlin.

“That was the first time and the last time I saw Butkus,” McLaughlin said. “He couldn’t catch me. I was an angry little man.”

That was one of the stories McLaughlin related during his acceptance speech Sunday after receiving the Lifetime Service Award from the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Illinois Chapter.

Despite his small stature,

McLaughlin, who grew to be 5-6, went on to play three sports at North Central College, lettering in football, wrestling and baseball, before spending a year in the Canadian Football League with the Saskatchewan Rough Riders.

After returning to the Chicago area, McLaughlin began what became a legendary career as a wrestling coach at Joliet Central, leading the Steelmen to a 508192-9 record over a 40-year career that ended in 2010.

Under McLaughlin’s guidance, Joliet Central won the 1985 dual team state championship and produced 108 state qualifiers, including seven state champions and eight runners-up. But success wasn’t defined solely by victory.

“I tell my kids you can do it,” McLaughlin said. “Come in this room like you’re going to be a SEE LEWIS PAGE 16

Mueller tabbed as GLVC Player of the Week The Great Lakes Valley Conference announced on Monday (Oct. 23) that Lewis University senior forward Nico Mueller (Braunschweig, Germany / Raabeschule Braunschweig) was selected the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week for the period ending Oct. 22.

Mueller scored five goals in two games last week and had both game-winning goals for the Flyers (11-4, 10-3 GLVC).

In a 3-2 win over Quincy, Mueller scored three goals in the first 23 minutes of the game to lead the Flyers to victory.

He opened the scoring for Lewis

against Truman State Sunday (Oct. 22) and then closed the scoring with a game-winner with just 1:03 remaining in double overtime to give Lewis a 4-3 win.

“What can one say about how Nico is playing,” Lewis head men’s soccer coach Evan Fiffles said.

“He’s in great form and has a lot of confidence at this time.

“He had one of the best weekends ever in the history of Lewis men’s soccer and the GLVC, which is saying a lot. He is very deserving.”

He leads the Flyers and is tied for the GLVC lead with 11 goals on the season. He is tied for second in the league with 24 points.

In the win over Truman State, Mueller scored with 1:13 left in double overtime to give the Lewis University men’s soccer team a 4-3 win over Truman State Sunday (Oct. 22) in a Great Lakes Valley Conference match at Lewis Stadium.

Mueller has scored the past four game-winning goals for the Flyers (11-4, 10-3 GLVC).

Truman took a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute on a goal from Michael Ruzicka, with an assist from Matt Yankowitz.

Lewis tied the game at 1-1 in the 34th minute when Mueller found the back of the net on a pass from Claude Kameni (Berlin, Germany/ OSZ Gesundheit).

The Bulldogs (4-12-1, 3-10-1) answered in the 42nd minute when Mateo Montano scored on a header off a corner kick from Brian Kane.

Montano scored again in the 52nd minute on another header, this time off apass from Austin Morgan, to make it a 3-1 Truman lead.

Less than a minute later the Flyers answered when Devon AmooMensah (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) connected on a header off a free kick from John Horstman (Godfrey, Ill./Marquette Catholic) at the 35-yard line to cut the Flyer deficit to 3-2.

The Flyers tied the game at 3-3 in the 76th minute when Horstman scored on a penalty kick.

That set up the game-winning goal, when Mueller scored off a Marty Manzke (Orland Park, Ill./

Sandburg) corner kick to give Lewis its eighth win in the past nine games.

Lewis held a 40-6 shot advantage and had 13 corner kicks to two from Truman.

CROSS COUNTRY In the first meet of the post season for Lewis University women’s cross country, the team finished the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship fifth with 160 Saturday (Oct. 21).

Stephanie Jarvis (Hortonville, WI/Hortonville) was the top runner for Lewis finishing 16th with a final time of 23:09.75.

Placing 17th was Zoe Mead (Princeton, Ill./Princeton) who finished in 23:13.00.

Ashley Lafayette (Bloomington, Ill./University High) came in 41st with 24:08.97.

Kaley McLawhorn (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) finished 48th completing the 6k in 24:18.22.

Finishing in 52nd place was Hollie Sinn (Heyworth, Ill./Heyworth) who had a final time of 24:22.09.

Gaby Sanchez (Rolling Meadows, Ill./Rolling Meadows) came in 57th after crossing the line in 24:27.51.

Kassady Learn (San Diego, CA, Rancho Bernardo) finished 85th in 25:17.09, the last Flyer to score for the team.

• Saturday (Oct. 21), Lewis University men’s cross country finished second in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship meet earning 43 points in the 8k.

The top runner for the Flyers was Sergio Miranda (Romeoville, Ill./Romeoville) who finished third overall with 24:39.63.

James Frederickson (Racine, Wis./Case) placed fourth with a final time of 24:39.94.

Finishing tenth was Dan Laskero (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) who finished in 25:13.66.

Michael Leet (Arlington Heights, Ill./Prospect) came in thirteenth with 25:19.88.

Coming in 16th was Jackson Waters (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) who finished the 8k in 25:26.06.

He retired seven years ago to spend more time with his family but found he couldn’t stay away, so he now works four hours per day monitoring the cafeteria. “(I missed) being around the kids,” McLaughlin said. “That’s why I went back because I’m around kids. I’m an authoritarian so the bigger and the rougher the crowd, the better off I am. My ambition every day was to create

one kid and make him better.

“That means breaking him down and putting him back together. The next day I got another kid and I kept doing that.”

Beneath the gruff exterior lies a man who cares deeply about the kids he coaches and about the latest recognition he’s received from his peers.

“It’s a dream come true (after) all those years of sweat and toil with the kids,” McLaughlin

said. “(I take pride) just from my peers coming up and telling me congratulations because for 50 years we’ve argued when we go against each other but at these meetings we love each other and we’re not ashamed to say that.”

Downers Grove South athletic director Randy Konstans, who held the same job at Lockport, was one of five other individuals also awarded the Lifetime Service Award.

“It’s just so humbling, not just (to be honored with) Mac but all of them,” Konstans said.

“Especially when you consider the people that have gone in before.”

The Lewis 400 yard freestyle relay team of Stephanie Palczynski (Warrenville, IL, Wheaton Warrenville South High School), Makenzie Murphy (Reno, Nev., Galena), Alexandra Raczek (Mosinee, WI/Stevens Point Area Senior High), and Sarah Simar (Jennings,La./Notre Dame) placed first in the event in 3:28.63.

In the 400 yard medley relay Lewis came in third after finishing the race in 4:08.96. The relay team was made up of Meghan Beese (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South), Hannah Zuercher (Lincoln, Neb./ Pius X), Eboni McCray (Avondale, AZ/Agua Fria High School), and Gabby Jeffers (South Bend, Ind./ John Adams).

McCray individually took second in the 50 yard freestyle with 25.43.

Simar came in third for the 200 yard butterfly after finishing in 2:19.76.

Victoria Rodriguez (Seville, Spain/San Francisco de Paula) finished the 500 yard freestyle third after touching the pad in 5:26.06.

The Indianapolis Quadrangular is the next meet for the Flyers taking place November 3.

Konstans was asked what he thinks McLaughlin’s legacy will be.

“We won’t know until it stops because he’s still working the (state) tournament with us,” Konstans said. “But I think you got a glimpse of it in his speech.

“To listen to him talk, you see how he can reach kids. To me, that’s going to be his greatest legacy, is what he’s been able to do for wrestlers at Joliet Central for 40 years.”

Bellarmine University ended the 15-match winning streak of the No. 1 ranked Lewis University women’s volleyball team with the 25-18, 2628, 25-18, 13-25, 15-13 Great Lakes Valley Conference upset victory over the Flyers at Knights Hall on Saturday (Oct. 21).

Lewis’ quartet of sophomore outside hitter Alexandra Preuss (Elmhurst, Ill./York), senior middle hitter Aly Schneider (Granger, Ind./Penn), redshirt senior right side Maddie Seliga (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall) and sophomore middle hitter Caroline Stefanon (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) combined for 55 kills, which was more than Bellarmine’s team total of 51.

Preuss had a match-high 18 kills, followed by 14 from Schneider.

Seliga had a double-double of 12 kills and 10 digs, while Stefanon pounded home 11 kills and finished with a hitting percentage of .471 (11 kills, 3 errors, 17 attacks).

With the win, Bellarmine improves to 18-5 overall and 8-3 in GLVC action, while the Flyers fall to 20-2 on the campaign and 9-1 in conference play.

Lewis redshirt junior setter Abby Becker (Menomonee Falls, Wis./ Menomonee Falls) had a doubledouble of 56 assists and 10 digs, while sophomore libero Ronni Katarzynski (Winfield, Ill./West Chicago) had a match-high 19 digs.

The Flyers had a tough time from the service line and at the net against Bellarmine, as they had 14 service errors for the match and the Knights’ outblocked them 115.

Bellarmine hit .185 (51-21-162) as a team, while the Flyers recorded a hitting percentage of .180 (6935-189).

Drive Sober campaign enforced for Halloween

This Halloween the Joliet Police Department is cracking down on impaired drivers with an aggressive Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over enforcement effort and is giving a fair warning to holiday revelers: Keep the Party off Road.

“On Halloween, we urge you to beware of impaired driving,” said Joliet Police Chief Brian Benton. “Driving impaired by alcohol or drugs is deadly. It is illegal and will get you pulled over and arrested this Halloween.”

According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates, more than 300 people were killed in alcohol-impaired motor vehicle crashes in each of the last three years in Illinois.

In 2014, 302 people lost their lives in crashes involving at least one driver with a blood alcohol content (BAC) of .08 or above. In 2015, that number rose slightly to 315 and remained the same in 2016. Just one DUI arrest could cost an estimated $18,000 or more and result in revoked driving privileges for up to a year.

The Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over enforcement campaign urges everyone to follow these simple tips to help keep our roads safe during Halloween: � Plan a safe way to get home before you attend a party. � Designate a sober driver, take public transportation, use your favorite ride-sharing service, or call a sober friend or family member to get home. � Walking while impaired can be just as dangerous as driving impaired. Designate a sober friend to walk you home. � If you see an impaired driver on the road, contact local law enforcement as soon as it is safe to do so. � If you see an impaired person about to drive, take their keys and help them get home safely.

The Halloween enforcement effort is made possible by federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.

Police to purchase state-of-the-art system to process crime scenes State’s Attorney’s Office has forwarded a check totaling $43,089.42 to pay for half of the $84,200 laser scanning and measurement system Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow announced that he is partnering with the Joliet Police Department to purchase a state-of-the-art laser scanning system that will dramatically advance the processing of violent crime and crash scenes.

State’s Attorney Glasgow has utilized money he seized from criminals engaged in illegal activities to cover half the cost of the FARO S350 3D Laser Scanner from FARO Technologies in Lake Mary, Fla. The State’s Attorney’s Office has forwarded a check totaling $43,089.42 to pay for half of the $84,200 laser scanning and measurement system.

The technology in this package will dramatically advance the ability of the Joliet Police Department’s highly skilled crime scene technicians to quickly process crime and crash scenes with pinpoint accuracy and high-definition detail.

“Effective crime-scene processing is the critical first step in

every investigation,” said State’s Attorney Glasgow. “I have witnessed the application of this technology in several investigations in the past several months, and I believe it to be one of the most significant law enforcement developments in years.

Evidence technicians at a murder scene will spend hours taking photographs and video, making meticulous measurements, and drawing detailed diagrams. The same is true for collision reconstruction specialists at vehicle crash scenes, some of which can span several city blocks or long stretches of rural road. This 21st Century technology, in their skilled hands, will substantially reduce the amount of time it takes them to document these scenes for investigation and prosecution purposes.

Furthermore, the FARO system will enhance their accuracy down to the millimeter and provide a recorded perspective of crime or crash scenes that is un-

precedented.

“My prosecutors will be able to lay the foundation to use these records at trial, giving judges and jurors incredibly detailed threedimensional views of these crime scenes,” the State’s Attorney said. “We will literally be taking the jury to a crime scene, not after-the-fact as has historically been done in the past, but at the exact moment that all the relevant evidence is still in its original location.”

“The Joliet Police Department is committed to delivering the highest level of professionalism in Public Safety,” said Police Chief Brian Benton. “This stateof-the art crime scene technology will help us in our efforts and we appreciate States Attorney Glasgow’s continued support.”

The State’s Attorney’s contribution for this system uses no taxpayer dollars. “Instead, I am using money I have seized from criminals who were engaged in illegal activities in our county,” State’s Attorney Glasgow said. “I can think of no more appropriate use for such money than to assist Will County’s largest police department in solving violent crimes and taking dangerous criminals off our streets.”

Vacation home is not real money-maker You’ll probably make some money, but in most cases there will be several weeks during a year when it sits empty DEAR DAVE, What is your opinion of buying a vacation home, then renting it out when you’re not there?

J.P. DEAR J.P., I see nothing wrong with it, as long as you’re buying with cash and you’re also debt-free. A vacation home is a wonderful “extra” as you start building wealth. Remember though, it’s still basically a very large, very expensive toy. In most

cases it will go up in value, and if you rent it, it might become something of a money-maker for you.

But here’s another side to vacation home rentals: You’ll probably make some money, but in most cases there will be several weeks during a year when it sits empty. You’re not going to get rich renting it out. So, they’re not really great investment properties. What you’re talking about is more of a plan to offset the annual costs of your toy. If you look

at it that way, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

If you’re determined to go this route, be ready to deal with spills on the carpet and damage from your guests, along with general mainte-

nance and repairs. There’s always something that needs attention when you own a property. But if you can handle all that emotionally and financially – and you’re not looking for it to be a big-time investment that will make you rich – you’ll be fine.

—DAVE DEAR DAVE, My wife and I are on Baby Step 2 of your plan. We have about $60,000 in debt left to pay off before we’ll be debt-free, and a household income of $140,000 a year. We have one child, but we would like to expand our family. We would have to do this using in vitro fertilization.

We’ve talked to a doctor, and he’s given us a ballpark figure of about $20,000 for the procedure. Should we wait until we’re debt-free to have this done?

JIM DEAR JIM, Babies are wonderful, important things. Having kids, even the thought of having kids, is a big emotional deal. But sometimes it can cause people to change their financial plans and directions.

I would urge you not to accept the first opinion and pricing model you receive on something like this. I’ve heard prices of $35,000, but that includes as many attempts as it takes until your wife becomes pregnant.

I’ve also heard of single attempts priced at $7,500 each. There are all kinds of options and guarantees, because they understand someone who is willing to do this really wants a baby.

If I’m in your shoes, I’m not accepting the idea that there’s one approach and one pricing structure to all this. I would explore other options, as far as doctors and clinics are concerned. Then, with your income, you could consider taking off a couple months from paying down debt and put some money toward the IVF. If it doesn’t work pay off a little more debt, pause the debt payoff, and try for a baby again.

Take some time, learn a little more, and go from there – always using cash for the endeavor.
