Village celebrates 100th birthday of long time resident 100 year-old Bolingbrook resident receives a day named after her

One of the most famous clichés in the English language is age is just a number, well, that truly is the case for Sadie Legittino.

The vibrant, outspoken and loquacious Meadowbrook Nursing Home resident turned 100 years old Thursday, and she has no intentions of slowing down anytime soon.

“I’m so surprised and honored to have a birthday like this in my life,” Legittino said. “My son and daughter do so much for me, I’m so grateful for this special day.”

Meadowbrook threw the youthful-at-heart birthday girl a surprise party followed by a visit from her family and friends within the facil-

ity. Leggittino was born on October 18, 1918 and was married for 65 years to her husband Joseph Leggittino, who she said she will forever be very grateful for.

“He was such an amazing man and husband to me,” Legittino said.

One of the many talents Leggittino is known for is bringing elation and comedy to others, and she said that at first, it wasn’t her husband who caught her eye, but his best friend.

“At first it wasn’t my husband,” Leggittino said jokingly. “After awhile when I lived on the south side and he lived on the north side he came to my house and told me I was going to be his wife where I responded that he didn’t know me, and he said ‘don’t worry now I do’ and we never looked back from

there.”

Leggittino grew up working at Salerno’s Bakery for 15 years on the assembly line where she said she made a lot of great relationships through out the years.

After retirement, Sadie and her husband moved to Arizona and returned back to Bolingbrook in

County celebrates topping off ceremony at courthouse Final beam at state of the art building was hoisted Oct. 19

Will County’s new state of the art courthouse has reached a new phase in construction.

Dozens of representatives from local and county government joined laborers to celebrate the topping off ceremony at the new courthouse on Friday, Oct. 19. The ceremony marked a milestone in the construction process, as one of the last steel beams was hoisted to the top of the new building and secured into place.

Members of the City Council, the Will County Board, labor, Gilbane Construction, and Wight and Company signed the beam before it was lifted to the top of the 10-story, $215 million Will County

Courthouse.

The milestone signifies the completion of the steel structure for the 370,000 square foot facility.

The new courthouse will hold 38 courtrooms, offices for the Will County Clerk of the Circuit Court, and standard judicial building features including enhanced security, operational efficiency and sustainability.

Will County Executive Larry Walsh said the new building is part of the county’s largest capital projects campaign in its history which also includes the new public safety complex and a planned new health department.

“These projects are being completed with local labor, which is helping our local economy,” Walsh said. “This remarkable structure will be a focal point for downtown Joliet and will encourage more economic development. We appreciate the support we have received from the city of Joliet. Will County is committed to Joliet as our county seat. We are proud to be part of the revival of downtown

Joliet.”

Joliet Councilwoman-at-large Jan Quillman noted the milestone as a day to remember for both the county and the city.

“This is an amazing day. It’s hard to believe that we were just here 280 days ago and what an accomplishment that we’re finally here with the final beam of this huge, beautiful courthouse,” she said.

Quillman also thanked the Will County Board for reinvesting in the city of Joliet and labor for their hard work on the project.

“This new courthouse and the eventual reopening of Chicago Street will not only be an economic boost for the city of Joliet, but also for the county as well,” Quillman said. “It’s amazing what you can accomplish when you all work together, because we are better together.”

Chief Judge Richard Schoenstedt said he’s watched the progression of the new building from the window in his chamber in the current courthouse, and lauded labor for all their hard work on the site.

Leggittino and her late husband have two sons, Al and Sam, with seven grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren.

According to the National Center for Health Statistics, 78.7 is the average life expectancy, but Leggittino has very simple advice on how she has made it to 100.

“My advice to young people and to live a good life is to have a good time and enjoy your parents, enjoy your mother and father while you have them,” Leggittino said.

These days, Leggittino enjoys playing Bunco and Bingo while still staying active with her friends and

family to make people around her smile.

“For Bingo, five and six are my lucky numbers,” Leggittino said. “I really enjoy playing, and I also love going around and kidding around with people so everyone is in good moods.”

Because of the inspiration the 100 year-old brings to those around her, Bolingbrook Mayor Roger Claar announced October 18 as “Sadie Legittino Day” in the Village of Bolingbrook, and encourages all residents and those that have been gracious enough to be around her to wish her a happy birthday and celebrate the life well lived by the free spirit that is Sadie Leggittino.

Saukenuk was well-known as one of the largest Native American villages in North America, but one of its residents, the warrior Black Hawk, was even better known.

Although born in Saukenuk, which was located where Rock Island stands today, his father Pyesa and mother Summer Rain and other relatives could trace their ancestry back thousands of years.

According to their oral traditions, both the Sauk and Meskwaki tribes were living in Canada 12,000 years ago at the time of the last glacial retreat. Many centuries later they were displaced from their Canadian home by the Iroquois.

The Sauk and Meskwaki migrated through New England and New York to the area near Niagara Falls. By 1640, the Meskwaki had settled at the west end of Lake Erie, near present-day Detroit, and the Sauk near Saginaw Bay in Michigan.

In 1701, the decades-long war began between the French and the Meskwaki, which almost led to the tribe’s extinction. Weakened, they joined the Sauk and together they migrated to the Mississippi River, where for nearly 100 years the tribes lived in their own villages and farmed, hunted and traded.

The two tribes were separate nations.

The Meskwaki were the smaller of the two, numbering about 1,600. In Rock Island, the Meskwaki had a village located across from Arsenal Island in what is now downtown Rock Island.

In the days before the locks and dams, the river was 17 feet lower than today. Fort Armstrong loomed 30 feet above the river, according to Beth Carvey, retired historian at the Black Hawk State Historic Site.

Over the years, the Sauk had several cities called Saukenuk. In 1808, the decision was made by the Sauk nation to consolidate smaller villages into the city now known as Saukenuk, located near the Rock River in Rock Island. Its location is near the Black Hawk State Historic Site, home to the John Hau-

berg Indian Museum which commemorates the lifestyle of those who lived at Saukenuk.

According to Ferrell Anderson, a local archaeologist, the Meskwaki village was made up of two rows of huts – about 30 total – located where downtown Rock Island is today.

In 1824, Thomas Forsyth, the Indian agent at Rock Island, wrote a report detailing the Indian villages within his jurisdiction.

Two miles up from the mouth of the Rock River was the “grand Sauk village where the principal chiefs, braves and warriors reside, ... and where all the affairs pertaining to the Sauk Nation of Indians were transacted,” Forsyth wrote.

“Indeed, I have seen many Indian villages, but I never saw such a large one or such a populous one.”

Behind the town, on the side of the ridge, were the Sauk gardens which Black Hawk indicated extended about 2 miles. Forsyth estimated the Sauk had about 800 acres under cultivation.

Saukenuk had a north-south and an east-west esplanade that formed a “T.” The east-west road was defined by the river and the bluffs.

It intersected with a longer northsouth avenue that was lined with many lodges. At one end was a gathering area and the council lodge. We know there were as many as 100 or more lodges at one point, and Saukenuk was home to as many as 6,000 – perhaps more.

For most of the years that the Sauk and Meskwaki lived on these lands, their life was an idyllic one. They lived peacefully in their villages with occasional skirmishes with other Indian tribes. They traded with the French and fought alongside the British, providing a lifestyle that was partially Indian and partially European.

The Sauk lived what might be described as an affluent lifestyle by Indian standards. Many of the Sauk dressed in European clothes and hunted with rifles.

When they did use arrows, they had metal tips, not stone. Their village on the shore of the Rock River was a thriving metropolis during the summer.

In fall, crops from their farms were stored in food pits and they crossed the river and wintered in southern Iowa and Missouri – returning to Saukenuk in the spring.

Unknowingly, the end of this lifestyle had been assured in 1804 when a few chiefs – possibly plied with alcohol – signed a treaty in St. Louis in which they agreed to move west of the Mississippi River in exchange for $1,000 a year, at such time as settlers arrived seeking to live on the land.

In 1830 the Sauk and Fox were ordered to leave their villages in Illinois and move to Iowa. Black Hawk and others refused to accept the terms of the 1804 treaty that the Sauk and Meskwaki had not been involved with.

In the winter of 1830, the tribes left but faced a winter of near starvation. In spring 1831, Black Hawk defied the government order and returned to Saukenuk and planted crops.

The settlers who had now occupied the old village were alarmed. Illinois Gov. John Reynolds sent 1,500 men to move the tribes out. On June 20 the volunteer army moved on Saukenuk.

When the militia arrived at Saukenuk, they found fresh footprints and fires still burning. The Sauk had left without a fight. The militia burned the lodges, destroyed the crops and vandalized the main cemetery and dug up graves, according to a letter from the new Indian agent, Felix St. Vrain, to Indian superintendent William Clark.

Fearing he would be pursued, Black Hawk went to Fort Armstrong and sued for peace. He got it, under the terms that he would stay out of Illinois.

Peace lasted until the next winter when the Indians, unable to grow crops in the less tillable land, once again faced starvation. In 1832 the Indians again crossed into Illinois, marking the second year of the Black Hawk War. There were numerous skirmishes and Black Hawk’s people, on the verge of starvation, fled into Wisconsin. They were finally trapped at Bad Axe Creek where they were slaughtered. Black Hawk and other leaders were captured and the militia killed old men, women and children, as well as 150 braves.

“When I call to mind the scenes of my youth and those of later days – and reflect that the theatre on which these were acted had been so long the home of my fathers, who now slept on the hills around it, I could not bring my mind to consent to leave this country … for any earthly consideration,” Black Hawk wrote in his autobiography.

I think your co-worker is broke.

Taking financial advice from broke people is like taking dieting advice from fat people. In other words, it’s dumb. Pay off your car, and never borrow money to buy a car again for the rest of your life. If you want

to win with money, you have to get out of the land of car payments.

The idea that you’re stuck with car payments — that you’re always going to have one — is the mantra of those who’ve given up hope. You are in charge of your life. You are in charge of your financial situation.

Don’t be like all those folks out there who whine about stuff like stagnant wages and are unwilling to get up off their stagnant butts to make their lives better.

On October 11, the Forest Preserve’s Board of Commissioners approved a bid of almost $300,000 for a 0.85-mile segment of Normantown Trail to be built from 111th Street in Naperville south to Rockwell Lane. Construction may begin this fall, but weather and other factors could delay the timeline.

This trail section is part of a larger project that will convert most of Normantown Road into

a 4.7-mile hiking and biking path that will travel from Wolf’s Crossing Road in Naperville south to 135th Street in Plainfield.

The process of converting the underutilized road into a trail began in the mid-2000 and is a collaborative effort. For instance, a 1.5-mile trail section that stretches from Vermont Cemetery Preserve to 111th Street is in place and was built by the Forest Preserve, the City of Naperville and two developers constructing subdivisions along the path.

While most sections of the road are being trimmed down to a 10-foot wide trail, a 0.15-mile section of the path will remain as a shared-use road so vehicles can continue to access Rockwell Lane from 119th Street.

Another 2.2-mile section of the trail will be constructed sometime in the future from 119th Street to 135th Street by the Village of Plainfield and the Plainfield Park District.

Once all of the pieces are in place, the Normantown Road Trail will link Vermont Cemetery Preserve, located south of Wolf’s Crossing Road, and Wolf Creek Preserve, located south of 111th Street. The path also will connect to the Tallgrass Greenway Trail, the Village of Plainfield’s internal bike trail network, the DuPage River Trail in Will and

DuPage counties, and eventually to the Virgil Gilman Trail in Kane County and the Grand Illinois Trail.

Camping gear rental program coming in Spring 2019 If you’ve always wanted to camp, but didn’t know where to start, the Forest Preserve District will launch a “No Gear, No Problem” program in spring 2019 that is just what you’ve been looking for. Once the program gets rolling, campers who want to sleep under the stars will be able to rent all of the equipment they need from the Forest Preserve District. The gear rental program’s fees were approved October 11 at the Board of Commissioner’s meeting.

The offering is intended to entice people to the Forest Preserve’s camping program and campsites by providing equipment, tips, and safe camping close to home, said Lynn Kurczewski, the Forest Preserve’s director of visitor services. Equipment can be rented in two- or fourperson packages or separately.

Rentable items include tents, sleeping bags, sleeping mats, rechargeable lanterns, cooking fire starting kits, pots, utensils and dishes.

Raiders fall to Lincoln-Way East in season finale, head into Class 8A postseason

Despite a regular seasonending 31-0 loss to Lincoln-Way East, Bolingbrook (7-2) will head into the Illinois High School Association Class 8A playoffs as the No. 11 seed and will host No. 22 Waubonsie Valley (6-3) at 7 p.m.

Friday night in the opening round.

The Raiders enter the postseason for the 30th consecutive season and do so scoring an average of 33.3 points per game, while allowing only 12.3 — a differential of 21 points.

Waubonsie Valley has scored only 19 points per game coming in, allowing 18.6.

The Warriors have six of their nine regular season opponents alive in the playoffs, while three of Bolingbrook’s opponents are in.

One of those three is defending 8A state champion Lincoln-Way East.

The first play from scrimmage to start the third quarter was the play of the game during Friday night’s Southwest Suburban Conference showdown.

The Griffins had the football in Raider territory for the first 24 minutes of the contest.

The Bolingbrook defense, led by defensive back Cameron Mitchell, only allowed a touchdown pass and a field goal and the Raiders trailed just 10-0 at halftime.

On the Griffins’ second-half opening kickoff return, East was assessed a holding penalty, which started their series at their own 13 yard-line. After holding the Griffins to just 10 first-half points, sparked by a key interception, by Mitchell late in the second quarter, the Raider sidelines were ready for a comeback.

Enter Lincoln-Way East’s 5-foot, 9-inch, 180-pound senior running back Jordan Corbett.

Corbett, would burst through the line and race 43 yards to get the Griffins out of trouble. Corbett’s run ignited 87, 91 and 72-yard Griffin scoring drives, over the next 12 minutes, as the defending champions rolled past the ‘Brook.

It was the 23rd consecutive win for the Griffins and gave them another outright SWSC championship.

On the night. Corbett carried the ball 32 times for 217 yards and a touchdown. Griffin senior quarterback Jack Baltz completed 11 of his 18 passes for 129 yards and two touchdowns.

For the Raider offense, senior running back Quentin Pringle, came into the game needing just 96 yards to reach the 1,000 yard mark, but was held to just 32 yards on 13 carries. Anthony Williams Jr, was held to just nine yards on nine carries. Junior quarterback Devyn Suggs, would pick up 30 yards on SEE RAIDERS PAGE 11

Lewis bowlers compete in first-ever tournaments The Lewis University women’s bowling team completed play in its first tournament in program history Oct. 21 at the Columbia 300 Western Shootout at Western Bowl.

The Flyers took 12th place overall with a 7,273 total and were within 70 pins of ninth place.

Ancilla College took first place with an 8,006, while Notre Dame-Ohio was second with a 7,964 and Robert Morris was third with a 7,810.

On Sunday the Flyers competed in 15 Baker games, shooting a 2,426 (161 average).

Lewis is back on the road Friday (Oct. 26) when it travels to Fairview Heights to compete in the Bearcat Hammer Open, hosted

by McKendree University, the 2017 NCAA National champions and 2018 NCAA national runner-ups.

On the men’s side, the Flyers finished in 29th place with a 6,939 total.Sunday they averaged a 2,215 over 15 Baker games (147.6).

Robert Morris won the tournament with an 8,884, while Calumet College of St. Jo-

seph was second with an 8,803 and Davenport was third with an 8,793.

Lewis is back in action Nov. 10 when it travels to the Leatherneck Classic in Moline.

WOMEN’S SOCCER The Lewis women’s soccer team dropped a heartbreaker in overtime to Maryville 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at Lewis Stadium. The Flyers (9-5-2, 8-4 GLVC) outshot Maryville (8-4-3, 7-4-1 GLVC) 10-5 in the contest.

The Saints had the wind for the first half and held the ball primarily in the Lewis end. Amanda Kaltwasser had a pair of chances in the third and 27th minutes but Bri Riscossa (Bloomingdale, Ill./Glenbard North) made a pair of saves to keep the game scoreless.

Kianna Clark (Lake in the Hills, Ill./Crystal Lake South) had a chance in the 15th which went wide.

Maryville outshot the Flyers 2-1 in the first half with both chances on goal.

LEWIS FROM PAGE 10 Lewis dominated the second half outshooting the Saints 8-2 and had several good opportunities. The best chance came in the 82nd minute. Courtney Sengstock (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South) took a shot from the right side of the penalty area and tried to bend it inside the left post but it didn’t drop enough and missed over the bar. Carley Patterson (Traverse City, MI/Elk Rapids) had a chance in the 84th minute but her shot hit off the post.

“We watched a lot of film on East. I thought we were well-prepared for them,” Mitchell said. “It felt great to get the big interception in the second quarter but I wish I could have returned it for a touchdown. We really needed the points. On to the playoffs.”

“We told the kids that they played very hard against a very good team,” Bolingbrook coach John Ivlow said. “They worked very hard to get this point, which is exactly where we wanted to be at the start of the season, with a shot at the conference championship.

“Corbett’s big run at the start of the third quarter, was a big play for them. That really allowed them to grab the momentum. LincolnWay East is very, very good. They do everything very well. That’s why they are state champions. Ask anyone who plays them.”

Maryville scored the game-winner in the 96th minute as Mariah Loya scored her third of the season off an assist from Allison Verville. Loya took a shot from the top of the penalty area that she tucked inside the left post.

Clark and Parnello combined for five of the Flyers 10 shots in

the contest. Each team had three shots on goal.

MEN’S SOCCER The Lewis men’s soccer team suffered a 2-0 loss to Maryville on Sunday afternoon at Lewis Stadium. Jesus Ochoa (Chicago, Ill.) led the Flyers (4-9-3, 3-8-1 GLVC) with two shots.

Lewis had three scoring chances in the first 16 minutes of the contest with the best one coming off the foot of Ochoa.

Ochoa sent a shot towards goal that looked to be going in but

didn’t dip enough and went over the bar.

Maryville (8-4-3, 7-3-2 GLVC) broke the scoreless deadlock with a goal in the 22nd minute. Diego Coy intercepted a pass of a deflection and found Helmut Florencia who scored from 10 yards out.

The Saints went into the intermission with the 1-0 lead and outshot The Flyers 6-3 and 2-0 in shots on goal.

Ochoa had a chance at the equalizer three minutes into the second but his shot his blocked.

Lewis then had a pair of corner

kicks in the 80th minute but were unable to get anything on goal.

Maryville tacked on an insurance goal in the 82nd minute when Mirza Hasecic scored off a cross from Diego Coy and Ricardo Andrade.

John Horstman (Godfrey, Ill./ Marquette Catholic) had a chance to put the Flyers on the board with less than a minute to play but his shot hit the crossbar.

The Saints outshot Lewis 11-5 and 4-0 in shots on goal and took eight corner kicks compared to four for Lewis.
