Lukancic, Amazon team up to teach kids healthy eating Romeoville middle school is one of 100 schools to participate

According to the Feeding America website, one in five kids lack proper access to food at some point during the year.

Scary, right?

Unfortunately, it doesn’t stop there.

As stated by a scientific statement from the American Heart Association, nine out of 10 children in the US do not have healthy diets.

With that being said, John J. Lukancic Middle School administrators, staff and students all took a step in maybe not correcting the issue, but certainly doing their part to make a difference.

Members from Amazon and the organization ‘No Kid Hungry’ teamed up for the celebration event enhanced breakfast program that kicked off last Wednesday morning.

“Schools offer breakfast programs, but not all students have the time to actually get in and eat breakfast before school,” said Matt Goodman, Amazon spokesman and representative. “In this program, we see the benefit of eating a healthy breakfast and we see the positive effect in the classroom when kids have something in their stomach.”

Associates from the Romeoville fulfillment center helped deliver bananas and engage students in fun activities to emphasize the importance of eating a nutritious breakfast.

A series of 10 questions were asked to the students, all correlating to healthy eating, sparking interest of healthy habits to the kids.

Not all students at Lukancic had the pleasure of attending the activity, as only 100 kids

were randomly selected and given a golden card to attend.

“We want the kids to leave today knowing they should always eat a healthy breakfast,” Goodman said. “Now that this will be offered to them on a daily basis, they will have a grab-and-go kart which they can bring to their first period which should remove a lot of roadblocks and barriers to them actually getting a healthy breakfast.”

Lukancic Middle School is not the only beneficiary of this movement however, as this was just one of the events planned across the country aimed to address this issue.

Through a partnership with Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign, Amazon is providing a total of 100 school grants to bring breakfast into the classrooms.

The nationwide support is expected to help deliver over 3.1 million breakfasts to more than 29,000 students across the country, and it is trying to stabilize the old cliché of enhancing an every day meal in the morning.

“Starting every morning with a healthy nutritious meal sounds so simple but it’s so crucial to helping kids start their day strong,” said Abbey Voelker, Share our Strength Associate Corporate Partnerships member. “We have found that when students start their day with a heavy breakfast, they are in the right mindset to focus on their studies, be willing to learn as much as they can and to be the people they were made to be.”

Voelker also said that with an abundance amount of kids struggling just in the state of Illinois itself, this movement needs to be adapted and put to use immediately.

“With one in six kids struggling with hunger in the state of Illinois, its something that we have to have a big solution in order for the kids to get the proper food that they need,” Voelker said. “We’re really glad to take part in making sure that kids can lead into their futures in a great way.”

Last Thursday at the Bolingbrook Golf Club, a sports jersey themed outing took place benefiting AMITA Health Adventist Medical Center in Bolingbrook.

Derek Cazeau, Executive Director of the Bolingbrook Hospital Foundation, said that this yearly fundraiser makes all the difference in the world going to those in need of healthcare within the area.

“The funds raised impact patient care and deliver better services for our patients in the community,” Cazeau said.

With this event-taking place before, this was the 10th year anniversary for the hospital.

Multiple television screens, sports advocated jerseys, dinner tables networking and a silent auction table filled up the ballroom Thursday in support of the philanthropy.

“At the end of the day this is all about health and wellness for our communities,” Cazeau said. “Personally for me, it’s very impactful that I do this because it’s the kind of work I’ve always wanted to do in healthcare.”

AMITA Health Adventist Medical Center in Bolingbrook is the third largest healthcare system in Illinois, while providing impatient and outpatient services while also disseminating emergency care to more than 1.2 million people across five counties in Illinois’ eighth congressional district.

Cazeau, said with the way healthcare has been fluctuating and not knowing what is in the

foreseeable future, it is important every year for people to come out and support the Medical Center.

“With the landscape of healthcare changing so dramatically every year its important we keep trying to find these philanthropic dollars that support our hospitals and continue to provide services needed for our communities.”

One of the staff members of the Bolingbrook Hospital, Anthony Dombrowski, said that he sees the benefit from people showing up to the event and helping out those who are in need of healthcare as well.

“Any of the funds that become available for the hospital all go to improving patient care and my job is to help physicians take care of patients,” Dombrowski said. “So in the end, I’m really happy to see the funds come in so we can make a difference in peoples lives.”

Valley View Public Schools has increased the per day rate for substitute guest teachers to $125 per day. In addition, the pay rate for guest teachers who work more than 60 days increases to $200 per

Despite HQ move, Peoria home to 12,000 Caterpillar workers

Peoria wasn’t always a company town. It was a distillery town, a farm implement town and a river town before the Caterpillar Tractor Co. set up shop.

A bond developed between company and town that became a mutuallybeneficial relationship.

Caterpillar rose to international prominence on the strength of rugged, reliable earthmoving machines while the Peoria area gained jobs — not only in bustling factories but at the headquarters of a Fortune 100 company, a rare distinction for a city of a population of 100,000.

But in 2017, that symbiotic relationship underwent a dramatic change.

Caterpillar announced two things that reverberated across central Illinois: the company ditched plans for an expansive office project in downtown Peoria that Caterpillar had promised with great fanfare just two years earlier, and the corporate headquarters would move to the Chicago area.

Peoria would remain Caterpillar’s “home,” the company stated, emphasizing that 12,000 employees would remain in central Illinois while some 300 executives and staff would work out of corporate offices in Deerfield.

Peoria Mayor Jim Ardis expressed appreciation for the employees who stayed behind but called the news “a punch in the gut.” State Sen. Dave Koehler said, “It’s something that everyone feared, but had hoped would never happen.”

The city now has fears of future announcements from Caterpillar management, headed by new CEO Jim Umpleby and board chairman Dave Calhoun, who heads the Blackstone Investment Group, that more jobs might be sent out of town.

While Peoria was jolted by Caterpillar’s actions last year, it’s no secret

that the U.S. manufacturing scene has changed mightily since 30,000 people were employed at central Illinois Caterpillar plants in the early 1970s. That was a time when most of Caterpillar’s machines were assembled in Illinois — in plants at Joliet, Aurora and Decatur as well as across the Peoria area.

Now Caterpillar has more factories overseas — 76 — than it does in the United States, where 62 plants operate. Caterpillar maintains 25 plants in China alone. When it comes to opening plants in this country, Caterpillar follows the trend of big manufacturers that set up shop in the Sun Belt.

U.S. plants opened by Caterpillar in recent years have been in Georgia and Texas while the company recently moved its mining division from Milwaukee to Tucson, Arizona.

Caterpillar Inc., the name the company adopted in 1986, has expanded beyond bulldozers. Along with making a major commitment to mining, Caterpillar is now heavily involved with equipment used for oil and gas exploration, electric power generation and marine engines.

But it wasn’t always that way.

By the time the Caterpillar name was a registered trademark in 1910, the Holt Caterpillar Co. had established a plant in East Peoria in a building that previously housed the Colean Manufacturing Co., a firm that made steampowered tractors before the company went bankrupt.

Benjamin Holt’s family business started in the mid-1880s in California.

Holt Caterpillar started up a division in the Midwest, moving to central Illinois with just 12 employees.

Fifteen years later, the Holt firm merged with rival C.L. Best Gas Tractor Co., another California-based company, to form the Caterpillar Tractor Co. in central Illinois.

After the 1925 merger, C.L. Best became Caterpillar’s first CEO, a position he held until his death in 1951.

“Clarence Leo Best — no one called him Clarence. His friends called him Leo. At work, he was C.L.,” said Lee Fosburgh, Caterpillar’s archives director.

Fosburgh pointed out that it was

Best who got Caterpillar off on the right foot.

“The Best Tracklayer Sixty became the Caterpillar Sixty,” said Fosburgh, referring to the workhorse tractor that helped establish Caterpillar in the earthmoving marketplace. “Best helped lead the push towards the company’s adoption of the diesel engine. He came up with concepts and ideas right up until his death — at age 71,” said Fosburgh.

Former CEO and Chairman Doug Oberhelman, in remarks made at the 2016 opening of the an exhibit on Best at the Caterpillar Visitors Center in Peoria, said Best’s business acumen was one of the big reasons for the company’s success. Oberhelman noted that Best went to Wall Street for Caterpillar’s initial public stock offering on Dec. 2, 1929 — just weeks after the devastating stock market crash that precipitated the Great Depression.

After presiding over the company’s greatest sales year ever in 2012 when Caterpillar topped $65 billion in sales (an occasion celebrated in Fortune magazine with the headline, “Caterpillar crushes it”), Oberhelman went all-in on mining. In 2010, Caterpillar made the largest acquisition in its history, buying Bucyrus International, a Milwaukee-based maker of large mining equipment, for $8.8 billion. No sooner was the deal completed when mining around the globe went into a tailspin.

As a result, Oberhelman presided over something else: the closing and consolidation of 20 plants worldwide and a dramatic reduction in the company’s workforce. Between 2012 and 2015, Caterpillar laid off 31,000 people.

As a company that sold 34 pipelaying machines to China in 1975, Caterpillar had a strategy for China in 2010: “We’re going to play offense and we’re going to win,” said Oberhelman at the time. By 2014, Caterpillar had 25 plants in China. But the Chinese market, once so hot, went cool.

But like the heavy-duty equipment it produces, Caterpillar has shown an ability to weather storms, whether inflicted by markets or strong winds.

Caterpillar was already bouncing back from the malaise in the mining industry in 2017 while in April of this year, Caterpillar posted the highest firstquarter profit in the company’s 93year history with a 31 percent increase in company revenues.

The final two roster spots for the 2019 Under Armour All-America Game will be decided by fan vote again this year, American Family Insurance and Intersport have announced.

American Family Insurance’s #DreamFearlessly Fan Vote will match up 32 players in a bracketstyle contest over the next several weeks.

Four players were chosen from each of eight geographic regions by the selection panel.

The voting website features the full bracket and video highlights of each player.

Voting is limited to one vote per browser session per 24 hours for each matchup.

Bolingbrook running back Anthony Williams, Jr. is in a tight battle with Connor Soelle from Saguaro High School in Scottsdale, Ariz.

“I have a lot of family and friends voting for me and the principal is going to make an announcement in the intercom for the school to vote for me,” Williams said. “I feel a lot of support behind me.”

Heading into last week’s game, Williams, a Michigan State recruit, had rushed for 592 yards and 10 touchdowns.

He had a successful Under Armour Camp and got the call that he was in the running.

“We kept in touch after their camp and they recently texted me to tell me I was part of the fan vote,” Williams said.

Spartans blanked by Indians

The Minooka Indians did not allow a potential trap game to hold them back from clinching a playoff berth Friday night, as they did just that, by defeating the Romeoville Spartans (0-7, 0-7) by a final score of 58-0. “[Upsets] have happened in the past so we wanted to make sure our kids knew to not look past any team,” Minooka coach John Belskis said. “You can only try to influence kids and not control them, so we wanted to make it clear nothing is fun when you don’t win a football game.”

Minooka (5-2, 5-2) started off the game with a blocked punt and touchdown recovery by junior Ernesto Ramirez, giving the Indians an early 7-0 lead within the first six minutes of action.

The special teams for Belskis’

crew didn’t stop there, as they would soon after add two more points on a safety. “[Special teams success] is reflected in our practices,” Belskis said. “We don’t want to leave any stone unturned, because we don’t have the [Division I] talent some of these others schools have so for our kids we have to put them in the best possible situations to be successful.”

Alluding to not having the Division I talent some other teams have, and while having a young team, the Indians start a total of 17 juniors, as well as two sophomores.

Minooka added two more scores to end the first quarter with a seven-yard touchdown run by junior running back Noah Ellens (6-81 rushing), and then added to their lead on a fumble recovery by junior cornerback Nick Schultz.

In the second quarter, Minooka got going with a 14-yard run by

junior running back Connor Etzkorn, followed by a 70-yard run by Ellens putting his name in discussion for MVP of the game.

Even though the Indians led by a score of 36-0 at half, the 20 points put up by Belskis’ offense wasn’t good enough in his eyes.

“We didn’t play a very good half of offense in the first half,” Belskis said. “We scored 16 points on defense, so we had to come back and figure out how we were going to be a better offense team through making the correct adjustments.”

Showing a little life to the start of the third quarter, 6-foot, 5-inch Romeoville quarterback Zach Gibson took his team down into Indian territory, chewing up almost five minutes on the game clock, but couldn’t come away with any points.

Is mortgage disability insurance a good idea?

Dear Dave: If someone is following your plan, is it a good idea to get mortgage disability insurance during Baby Step 2? — Craig Dear Craig: No, it is not. Mortgage disability insurance is a gimmick, and I would never recommend it to anyone.

I think I know where you’re going with this. During Baby Step 1, I encourage people to save up and set aside a beginner emergency fund of $1,000. Baby Step 2 is where you start paying off all your debts, except for your home, using the debt snowball system. A thousand dollars may not seem like a lot in savings during that time, but in the beginning it’s an attainable amount to save. Plus, it’s more than a lot of people have when they make the decision to get out of debt and gain control of their finances. Then, after finishing Baby Step 2 you move directly in Baby Step 3 — fully funding your emergency fund with three to six months of expenses.

What I would recommend is having long-term disability insurance in place. It’s fairly inexpensive, especially if you get it through your employer. — Dave Dear Dave: I’m driving a 12-yearold car with 210,000 miles on it. The car needs close to $2,000 in repairs, and it’s worth $5,000. I have $40,000 in cash saved, $40,000 in invest-

ments, and I make $80,000 a year.

I also have $15,000 in student loan debt, but the only other thing I owe on is my house. Should I pay to repair the car, or buy something else in the $15,000 price range? — Brett Dear Brett: Let’s see, if you wrote a $15,000 check for a newer car and wrote a $15,000 check for the student loans, it would leave you with $10,000. I wouldn’t buy a $15,000 car in your situation. I’d buy a

$10,000 car. You could probably sell the old one for around $3,000 if it needs repairs, combine that with your money and get a $13,000 car.

Then, you could write a check and pay off the student loan debt.

With no car payment, no student loan payment, and a good car, you can really lean into your budget and saving money. You’d have no debt except your home, and you could rebuild your savings in a hur-

ry. You’d be in really good financial shape in about six months. Plus, you’d have $15,000 in the bank in the meantime! — Dave

that he knows not everyone is in the position to acquire healthcare, and that the hospital recognizes that and wants to do all they can to provide services for those who need it.

“Healthcare is extremely expensive,” Dombrowski said. “All hospitals provide charity care no matter where they are, certainly here they do, so any extra funds and help that can be brought in to help supplement the work they have to do is a very good thing.”

Long time volunteer Sid Cudebee, who’s been working with Cazeau for 11 years, said he enjoys helping out the great cause and contributing to positive growth for healthcare which is the reason he contributes every single year.

“It’s just my way to give back,” Cudebee said. “It’s a great way for the community and the companies within the area to help to give back to our hospital and the everyone within our great community.”
