Big Run says industrial park threatens operation After recently celebrating its 30-year anniversary, Big Run Wolf Ranch in Lockport may not be able to operate.

According to Big Run Wolf Ranch, it was notified by Prologis, a global developer of industrial real estate, they submitted a proposal for a multiple-building industrial business park.

The development will be from the southwest corner of 143rd Street and I-355, extending to 151st Street and Archer Ave.; sitting directly on BRWR’s property line, adjacent to its animals and in the middle of five family neighborhoods, a release stated.

Principal nominated for national award B.J. Ward Elementary School Principal Ted Warpinski has been nominated for a School Nutrition Association FAME (Foodservice Achievement Management Excellence) Award.

The FAME Awards recognize individuals throughout the country who “raise the school nutrition bar for others to follow.” Winners will have “triumphed over challenges and provided insightful and innovative solutions to the complex issues that are the hallmark” of the school nutrition industry.

Warpinski was nominated in the “Friend of Child Nutrition” category for his ongoing support of the Valley View School District 365U Nutrition Services Department.

B.J. WARD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PRINCIPAL TED WARPINSKI “Ted and the team at B.J. Ward deserve recognition for being great partners and always doing the right thing for kids,” said VVSD’s Assistant Director of Nutrition Services Tracie Suter, who

is also President of the Illinois Nutrition Association. “We very much appreciate their continued support of our program and initiatives.”

“We recognize the importance of our Nutrition Services Department as a critical part of our school.” Warpinski said. “Our kids are fed well, learn about the importance of eating healthy and understand that a balanced meal is critical to each day they are in school.”

Romeoville High School Student Leadership members show their appreciation to staff just before Winter Break by serving them donuts and bagels. Each staff member was also given a holiday card with a special note from one

of their students and each department’s door was decorated .

HUMPHREY HELPING HANDS RAISES ALMOST $2,500 FOR LOCAL FAMILIES The Humphrey Helping Hands 2016 campaign was another success, collecting nearly $2,500 in donations from Humphrey Middle School staff and local businesses.

The money was used to assist more than a dozen families of Humphrey Middle School students make their holidays a bit brighter.

The campaign was spearheaded by Claudine Sharko, Bridget

James, Judy Elmore and Sandi Saracco. Assisting elves were Kaylee Lawrence, Jennifer Fagan, Kelly Williams, Kathy Walsh, Lee Fair, Heather Eck, Nicole Olson, Mary Kuliavas, and Maria Castillo.

Former student headed to China for 5 months

Ja’ami Mock will study mechanical engineering abroad A former Valley View School District 365U student will soon embark on a five-month study abroad program at China’s Xi’an Jiaotong University next month.

Ja’ami Mock, who attended Lukancic Middle School and Bolingbrook High School, will head to China Feb. 10 courtesy of a study abroad program at Iowa State University where he is a freshman studying mechanical engineering.

“I want to help change and inspire the world,” said Mock. “I believe that a crucial piece to being successful is outreach through global collaboration to share knowledge and to also give back to communities in need.”

Mock, who is the grandson of BHS special education teacher Pat Jones, will stay in China until

mid-summer. He will be one of the first students to participate in the recently-launched Xi’an JiaoTong University Foreign Exchange Program.

“At first I was skeptical about going away for half a year since I have never left the U.S before,” he said. “After speaking with the Chief Operating Officer of Rockwell Collins and several Boeing employees who told me this was

an opportunity I should act on, it helped cast my choice.”

“I hope I can learn something new about myself and become more aware of diversity,” he added.

F E N R ICH Mark Allen Fenrich age 66 of Bolingbrook, passed away on December 16, 2016 at his home. He was born in West Alice, Wisconsin, the oldest child and son of Karl and Inge Fenrich. He grew up in Naperville and graduated from Naperville Central High School in 1968 and Northern Illinois University in June of 1972.

Mark is survived by his wife and partner of 35 years, Marilynne, his mother Inge, two children Kristin Hennelly (Kip) and Ryan Feris (Brooke) and six grandchildren: Walker, Kendall, Katelyn, Kamryn, Lily and Jake as well as his sisters Linda McDonald (Bob) and Susan Fenrich. He was preceded in death by his niece Megan

Mark was passionate about his yard, loved photography, snow and water skiing, building and flying radiocontrolled airplanes with the Lisle Club.

He played tennis for the Naperville Central High School team and was thrilled to watch the Chicago Cubs win the World Series. He wore his “lucky” Cubs shirt for each game.

Cremation services were private and a Celebration of Life memorial service is planned for April 22 on Earth Day at the Boughton Ridge Golf Course and Ashbury’s Restaurant in Bolingbrook.

Welcome to the New Year. As the holiday season winds down and you pack away your decorations, consider organizing them in a way that will make it a joy to decorate for the next holiday season. You can make “undecorating” fun by involving family members and making it one of your holiday traditions.

You can also minimize the tediousness by putting away just a few decorations each day over a period of time rather than trying to do it all at once.

Just be sure to take some time to organize and properly store your decorations to ensure that you will continue to enjoy them for years to come.

Weed out decorations you don’t use or don’t like. If they have sentimental value but you don’t use them, put them in a keepsake box and include a note that indicates their significance. If they’re in good shape but you no longer want them, donate them – schools, community theater groups, senior homes and homeless shelters are all potential recipients. Otherwise, recycle what you can and toss the rest.

Organize your decorations in a meaningful way.

Think about your decorating technique, and organize your decorations accordingly. If you decorate room-by-room, store the decorations for each room together. If you like to put out similar decorations at the same time (e.g., all the candles, all the window decorations, all the garlands, etc.), pack your decorations according to type. Take pictures of each area of your decorated home to remind you of where things go.

Use special containers for special decorations. Artificial Christmas trees and wreaths are two large items that may not fit easily into a typical box or bin. You can purchase special bags or boxes for these items at general merchandise and home improvement stores.

You might consider putting these and other large decorations into clear plastic bags (recycling bags or dry cleaner

bags work well). If you don’t have shelf or floor space to store them, consider hanging them from the rafters in your attic, garage, or basement.

Label containers. Make it easy to identify what’s in each container by labeling at least 2 of the sides as well as the top – you never know which side will be facing you. You can use a general description (e.g., “Christmas - Living Room”) or instead, you can assign a number to each container and then create a separate inventory of each container’s contents by number (e.g., “Box 1 – New Year’s decorations,” “Box 2 – Eid decorations,” etc.).

Stow containers with retrieval in mind. Make sure one of the labels is facing forward so it can be seen easily. If you have decorations from several holidays, rotate containers so the most current holiday is always the most accessible: put decorations for the most recent holiday in the back or at the bottom and move containers for the next holiday to the front or top of the group.

CHAMPS Bolingbrook remains undefeated with a championship in the Hinsdale Central Tournament

This season, the Bolingbrook boys basketball team entered the Hinsdale Central Holiday Tournament for the first time and rolled through the tournament claiming the title with a 67-62 win over Homewood-Flossmoor.

The Raiders pulled away to a 24 point lead during the game, but saw H-F close the lead late and make it a game in the end.

“H-F is really good and they were 10-1 coming into the game for a reason,” Bolingbrook coach Rob Brost said. “They are well coached and they didn’t give up and to their credit, they fought all the way back. We know anytime Bolingbrook plays H-F it will be a battle and it was tonight.”

Brost said the game illustrated both sides of the Raiders’ play.

“We show what we are capable of in spurts, but we also showed

in the last three minutes what we are capable of, so it was a nice learning tool for us,” he said. “It shows us both sides of it. We can be one of the top teams in the state, but if we don’t play right, things can get away from us.”

What did not get away from Bolingbrook was the eventual win and the title, something the Raiders are proud of.

“There were four Thanksgiving tournament champions in this tournament and only one of them came away with the holiday tournament trophy and that was us and we are happy with that,” Brost said.

Bolingbrook’s Maklik Binns averaged 16.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game and was named to the All-Tournament Team, while Nana Akenten averaged 18.7 points and 8.7 rebounds over the four games and was named tournament MVP. He was also credited with not turning the ball over in the tournament.

Up and down season going for Spartans

When talking about Niles West guard Samantha Galanopoulos, Romeoville coach Julio Carrasco summed it up best by simply saying, ‘wow is she good.’

The sophomore put on quite a show Thursday in the finale of pool play at the Nazareth Christmas tournament, scoring 31 points in a 68-34 victory over the Spartans.

After scoring 15 points in the opening half as the Wolves took a 39-20 lead into the break, Galanopoulos then rattled off six baskets in a row in the third quarter as the lead swelled to 57-26.

“First of all, we got rebounds and that helped a lot,” said Galanopoulos, whose season high is 34 points. “We also got deflections on defense and were able to beat them up the court. We moved the ball and my teammates helped me get open.”

Junior Tricia Pabst chipped in with 19 points.

“Sam is obviously our big scorer,” Niles West coach Tony Konsewicz said. “But when Tricia gets going, it really opens the floor up

for the whole team. She hit some big shots.”

Hailey Kipp chipped in with 12 rebounds and three steals and Sidney Hines totaled eight rebounds.

The Wolves split their opening two games of the event, defeating the host Roadrunners while falling to Plainfield East.

“We play in a very hard conference,” Galanopoulos said, “so this is a good way to get into the vibe of things, especially during break. This helps us see what we are made of and it will help a lot when we go back into conference.”

As for Romeoville, it’s been a bit of an upand-down campaign. The Spartans, who graduate four starters from a year ago, fell to 7-8 on the year after losing two of three in pool play (they beat Nazareth on Dec. 28).

Senior Lexi Marin scored 17 points and Brittany Osborne had eight points and 10 rebounds against Niles West.

“It’s about consistency,” Carrasco said.

“It seems like it is every other game with us. We’ve scored over 60 points two or three times this year and we’ve beaten some good teams. It’s a tale of two teams and we don’t know which one is going to show up.”

Chemistry working well for Raiders

There was no doubt the Bolingbrook boys basketball team received an infusion of talent thanks to three transfers.

The question was whether the newcomers would mesh well with the holdovers.

The Raiders seem to have answered that question in the affirmative.

“It was a good transition,” senior Malik Binns said. “I know the guys from a while back and our chemistry was good. The coach has a lot of trust in me, and the players, we get along nicely.”

Binns, a 6-foot-6 center, transferred from Morgan Park, while 6-4 senior forward Trevor Ross came over from Oswego East and 6-1 junior guard Kaleb Thornton moved in from Nazareth.

Those three have bolstered a starting rotation that is one of the state’s most explosive and fun to watch. “(Chemistry) hasn’t been an issue to this point,” Bolingbrook coach Rob Brost said. “We expected this.

“One of the things we talk about all the time is being a good teammate. Once we do that, our play follows, so that’s what happened.”

Bolingbrook beat Glenbrook South 78-45 in the opening round of the Hinsdale Central Holiday Tournament on Dec. 27 and followed that with a 53-46 win over Westinghouse the next day to improve to 8-0.

But Binns, a versatile player who can play either forward position as well as center, stepped up with a dominant effort. He had a game-high 21 points and seven rebounds.

“I saw they had a box-and-one on Nana, so they were focusing on him mainly,” Binns said.

“The team, when they were taking shots they were bouncing around the rim and I would be there to get it, or they had a lot of trust in me, feeding me in the post and giving me opportunities to score.”

The Titans kept the game close for a while. The score was tied at 17-17 before the Raiders went on a 17-4 run to close the half.

“We just kept our composure and just kept doing the things we’ve always been practicing in practice,” Binns said. “So (the difficulty was) nothing major.”

The Raiders used their swarming defense and potent running game to generate plenty of fast break points in the second quarter and beyond. Binns scored five points during the secondquarter run, which also featured layups by Thornton, Akenten and sophomore guard Joseph Yesufu.

Thornton finished with 12 points and four assists, while Yesufu added 10 points on 5-for7 shooting and four rebounds as the Raiders shot 62 percent despite using 15 players, 13 of whom scored.

“We always like to play fast,” Brost said. “I think we’re one of the top five teams in the state in scoring.

“Teams are trying to slow us down, obviously, and not let us get out and run. Today we did a pretty good job of wearing them down, especially in the third quarter.”

Brost is pleased with how the production has been spread out.

“It’s been different guys different nights,” Brost said. “Joseph really stepped up today.

“It was a weird game because Trevor got hurt, Tyler (Cochran) was in foul trouble all game.

Nana didn’t score what he normally scores, but other guys stepped up.”

The fast start has some people predicting Bolingbrook can make a deep run the state tournament like it did two years ago, when the Raiders finished third.

But Binns said they aren’t thinking about that.

“All we want to do is take one game at a time,” Binns said. “We just want to keep playing hard and giving it our all all the time.”

County looks back on productive year Long-awaited multi-modal regional transportation center has been approved

The past year has seen many changes in Will County. What hasn’t changed is the overall character of the residents and their interest in seeing the community come together to succeed.

With respect for lives lost, many residents honored the 15th anniver-

sary of the infamous 9/11 tragedy at community events and ceremonies held throughout the county.

The long-awaited multi-modal transportation regional transportation center has been approved and ground broken. The city of Joliet obtained project funding, and construction is scheduled to reach completion by the end of 2017.

Several new businesses have opened in 2016, with several more

to come in 2017.

Amazon brought jobs to both Romeoville and Joliet when looking to set up new locations for fulfillment centers within the county.

Cadence Premier Logistics did the same when it started construction for its new site, which is expected to move hundreds of jobs from Alsip to Joliet.

The development of the Weber Road/I-55 interchange project is an example of the county’s commitment to showing responsiveness to the community’s needs for safe and adequate access to roads.

There are two areas of concern for the county in the coming months.

The heroin epidemic has plagued not only communities in Will County but also many others across the nation. More than 70 heroinrelated overdoses were reported in 2016. County officials have continued efforts to encourage partnerships between area schools and nonprofit organizations to educate community youth of heroin’s consequences.

Secondly, the state of Illinois continues to struggle financially, and talk of cuts to the local municipal

distributive funding has county officials eyeing spending cuts to balance the books. A number of nonprofit organizations are dealing with hardship brought on by reduced allotments in general state aid.

On another note, thousands kicked off the holiday season at the annual Light Up the Holidays Parade and Festival in downtown Joliet.

The season of giving continues to inspire residents to look out for one another in the communities they live.

Credit cards are not an emergency fund DEAR DAVE, My husband and I are trying to follow your plan. We’ve paid off all of our credit cards, but he still doesn’t want to close the accounts and cut up the cards. Instead, he wants to keep them in a drawer and use them as an emergency fund. He grew up really poor, and I think he’s afraid of being poor again. We both know that’s not what you recommend, so what can I do to convince him to follow your advice?

LYNN

DEAR LYNN, I think rather than trying to convince him, it might be a better idea

to gently ask questions and talk things through. You said he grew up in poverty. What I’m hearing is that the cards represent a kind of security blanket for him. I can understand that. But if you had $10,000 set aside for emergencies, you’d have the security of knowing that a transmission repair on the car or a new water heater for the house would only be a minor inconvenience — and you wouldn’t have to go back into debt to make things right again.

Explain to him that what you’d like to do is replace the credit cards with your own money. You’d also be replacing what they do with a debit card. Ask him if there’s a reasonable amount you two could have in the bank that would take away his worry and stress. Talk it out, agree on the amount, and then agree that when you’ve saved up and hit that number, the cards get cut up and the accounts are closed.

Just be patient and understanding. Above all, make sure you work together. If he’s recognized the wisdom of getting out of debt and taking control of your finances, he’s moving in the right direction!

— DAVE DEAR DAVE, How do you feel about using layaway programs?

JAY DEAR JAY, I’m not a huge fan of layaway plans, because they’re not really the solution to a problem. What’s wrong with just saving up and buying stuff when you have the cash?

I mean, Christmas comes at the same time every year, you know?

It’s not like it snuck up on you.

I know there are rare instances when particular items are on sale, and you can take advantage of it through layaway if you don’t have the cash at the moment. I don’t really have a problem with that kind of thing in rare instances. But I would not, under any circumstances, use a layaway plan that has fees attached. You might as well borrow the money if you’re going that route.

Here’s a good rule of thumb: if you don’t have the money, you can’t afford it. And make sure you don’t get into the habit of lusting after things you don’t own, because that lack of contentment is always tied to people being broke. Just don’t make plans like this a way of life, Jay. If you do, you’re liable to stay chained to layaway programs just like you’d be chained to debt!

— DAVE DEAR DAVE, My wife and I have been married for 12 years. Last month we found out she has terminal cancer and only six months to live. We’ve been fortunate enough to become fairly wealthy during our lives together,

and she wants to buy me a boat.

We always went fishing together, and her last wish is for me to have the boat I’ve always wanted. Even with this prognosis, I’ll be okay financially when she’s gone. Still, I can’t stand the thought of this. It’s just too painful. Do you have any advice?

ANDREW DEAR ANDREW, Buddy, I am so very sorry. I hope you realize that you have the sweetest woman on earth for your wife.

Even with all she’s going through, her thoughts are of you and your happiness. That is one amazing lady.

The first thing I’d tell you both is to make sure your faith is intact.

Hug her a lot, and keep talking to, praying with, and loving on each other. Be there for her all you can, and keep in mind that doctors can be wrong. It happens a lot, believe it or not, so don’t give up hope.

In other words, just tell her the truth and be real. If she goes home to be with the Lord, there might come a day down the road when the pain you’ll feel has dulled just a little, and you find yourself sitting on that fishing boat that’s named after her. That would be okay. I’m sure she would be smiling at you while you reeled in a big one. But you’ve got more important things to take care of right now — namely her.

New laws to be enforced in 2017

Significant number target crime, make changes to criminal justice system SPRINGFIELD - As citizens throughout the state of Illinois ring in the New Year, nearly 200 laws will take effect. A significant number of the new laws target crime, make changes to the criminal justice system, seek to assist law enforcement, and advance safety provisions for Illinois motorists.

Advocates of the measure said the training is intended to reduce domestic violence by increasing awareness and offering victims another place to turn for help – especially those who may not feel comfortable going to the authorities.

CRIMINAL JUSTICE REFORMS POISED TO TAKE EFFECT

Child victims of battery will be able to give testimony via a one-way closed circuit television thanks to Senate Bill 2880. This legislation allows children involved in battery or aggravated domestic battery cases to avoid the serious emotional trauma and distress of testifying in a courtroom.

Senate Bill 2370, sponsored by Senate Republican Leader Christine Radogno (R-Lemont), requires legal counsel during the interrogation of minors under the age of 15 who have been charged with murder. This law addresses concerns that minors may not fully understand their legal rights, and as a result should have legal representation present when speaking with police.

One measure to allow greater flexibility in granting probation for certain non-violent offenders with no prior conviction for a violent crime is set to take effect on Jan. 1. Senate Bill 3164 is part of a bipartisan package of legislative reforms to Illinois’ criminal justice system, and was introduced at the recommendation of the Governor’s Illinois State Commission on Criminal Justice and Sentencing Reform.

The commission was charged with identifying policy changes to reduce recidivism and make significant reductions to the state’s prison population, which had increased by more than 500 percent in the last forty years.

Senate Bill 3164 is one measure that seeks to reduce the number of non-violent offenders in Illinois’ correctional facilities—which are operating at roughly 150 percent of recommended capacity.

NEW LAWS AIM TO ADDRESS SEXUAL ASSAULT AND DOMESTIC ABUSE Another new law, Senate Bill 3096, seeks to increase the reporting, investigation, and successful prosecution of sexual assault cases in Illinois.

This new law gives victims a longer period of time to request a rape kit, speeds up forensic testing to address the backlog of testing rape kits in sexual assault cases, and requires more detailed reporting of sexual assault cases by police.

Additionally, cosmetologists will receive special training to spot the signs of domestic violence and sexual violence as part of their license renewal process under House Bill 4264.

This new law was inspired by a similar law in Missouri that allowed interstate interchanges to be designated for Missouri residents who were killed in action on or after September 11, 2001, in either Afghanistan or Iraq.

NEW LAW STRENGTHENS EMPLOYEE PRIVACY Another new law, House Bill 4999, seeks to further protect employee’s online privacy by strengthening and clarifying existing laws that make it unlawful for any employer or prospective employer to require an employee or prospective employee to provide usernames and passwords to their personal online accounts, including social media accounts.

“BATH SALTS” SALES Senate Bill 210 aims to curb the sale of all synthetic cathinones, drugs that are often sold under the disguise of legitimate products such as “bath salts.” “Bath salts” have made headlines in recent years for the bizarre, zombie-like behavior exhibited by those under its influence. Under this new law it will become a Class 3 felony with a maximum fine of $150 to sell these drugs in a retail store.

NEW TRANSPORTATION LAWS INCREASE PUBLIC SAFETY

VETERANS AND MILITARY FAMILIES AIDED BY NEW LAWS

Don’t forget to stop at a railroad crossing when the warning gates and lights are on! Under Senate Bill 2806 the fine for failure to stop at a railroad crossing will double. A first violation will now cost you $500 and subsequent violations will cost $1,000.

Private transportation companies will be allowed to operate video recording devices under Senate Bill 629. The new law stipulates that vehicles using this type of technology must have a notice posted stating that a passenger’s conversation may be recorded. Any data recorded becomes the sole property of the vehicle’s owner.

Student musicians may now be excused from school in the case of a military funeral procession under a new law that takes effect on January 1. House Bill 4432 ensures that any Illinois public student, grades six through twelve, is permitted to attend a funeral of a deceased veteran during school hours for the purpose of playing “Taps,” a bugle call traditionally performed during flag ceremonies and military funerals.

To honor fallen soldiers, House Bill 4344 creates the Heroes Way Designation Program Act. Amending Childhood Hunger Relief Act, Senate Bill 2393 is a new law this year that requires all school districts in Illinois to implement and operate a “breakfast after the bell” program. The legislation asserts that schools must provide breakfast for their students after the instructional day has begun— and may also begin serving before the day has begun.

NEW LAWS PROVIDE NEW WAYS TO HUNT AND TRAP In order to trap wild game in past years, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) required that all individuals must complete a hunting training course. Senate Bill 2410 has lifted that requirement and now permits that individuals ages 18 and under can trap wild game without certification as long as they are accompanied by an adult age 21 years or older.

Lastly, thanks to House Bill 5788, a new fishing law states that fishermen can now add catfish to the list of species that may be caught with a pitchfork, underwater spear gun, bow and arrow, or a bow and arrow device. Under the new measure, the DNR will authorize the selling of species taken by the above methods.

Being able to sell these fish not only benefits fishermen, but is also crucial to the state’s overall environmental health. The current overpopulation of Asian Carp throughout the state is causing irreparable damage to Illinois’ waterways and ecosystems.
