TOP LOCAL STORIES OF 2017 Here, the second in a two-part series that chronicles what kept people talking in Bolingbrook and Romeoville in 2017: who reside in Illinois.

Local Bolingbrook agency Southwest Suburban Immigrant Project sent a statement denouncing “the decision made by the administration, and urges congress to find a permanent solution, that does not further criminalize the parents of DACA recipients and other undocumented people.”

SSIP was calling on local leadership and the widespread communities of Bolingbrook, Romeoville, Woodridge, and surrounding suburbs to issue statements of support and protection for immigrant youth that will be directly impacted both immediately and consequently.

LOCAL CARE FOR ALZHEIMER’S INCREASES In a unique educational partnership began in July, associates specializing in Alzheimer’s and dementia care from Senior Star at Weber Place have provided dementia training to the entire staff of the Daley’s Ambulance Service of Joliet.

Part of Senior Star’s mission as an industry expert on Alzheimer’s and dementia care, is its community outreach, taking the role of educator very seriously. This partnership came to be after an EMT from Daley’s, who provided nonemergency transport, underwent a training session about dementia.

Senior Star Executive Director Tom Johnsrud recalls an EMT commenting that often when a first responder is transporting someone from a private home to a facility, he or she may not know what or why something happened to an individual until they start recognizing the signs of dementia. All of a sudden, the padlock on the refrigerator door makes sense to the weight loss and paranoia that someone is stealing from them, common with Alzheimer patients.

“Recalling what was taught about dementia goes a long way to understanding what a resident is going through,” said Johnsrud.

He explains Senior Star’s industry expertise in Alzheimer’s and dementia care has allowed them the opportunity to have a greater impact throughout Chicagoland by training others who are in a position to aid seniors. As more is known about agerelated diseases, it becomes increasingly critical to understand the needs of dementia and how those differ from others in crisis.

NEW DEVELOPMENT ON ROUTE 53 IN ROMEOVILLE CONTINUES Development spurs development. As new businesses opened along the Route 53 corridor, opportunity continued to attract more.

With the big move for Fat Ricky’s to its newly built expanded space at the heart of Uptown Square, its former location just adjacent to the new digs was vacant. A new restaurant of Mexican flare came to the area, El Comedor Express at 660 N. Independence Boulevard. The restaurant is to serve Authentic Mexican Food from the state of Durango.

Just across the way, at the former site of the Lazer Car Wash which was recently razed, a Checker’s restaurant is expected to build a 1,017 square-foot drive- thru restaurant at Phelphs Ave and Route 53.

In addition, as BMO Harris constructed a new building as the anchor on Route 53, its former location on Town Hall Drive is also set to be demolished as the older building was already in

AGENCIES PREPARE FOR FALLOUT OF DACA PROGRAM With circumstances unknown for Dreamers everywhere, local agencies began preparing information for those affected by the termination of DACA, a program that allows the children of those who entered the United States illegally to remain.

DACA stands for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. DACA was created on June 15, 2012, as a program that allows qualifying people to work legally in the United States without being deported.

It was announced in August that itl be phased out and be terminated by March 6, 2018, impacting 800,000 young immigrants who came to the United States as children, 42,000 of them

Nearly 60 community groups, clubs and organizations came together to march in Romeoville’s Founders Day Parade Sunday.

Families and friends lined the streets along Belmont Drive, winding through the Hampton Park neighborhood, with hundreds of onlookers out to cheer the parade walkers.

This year’s theme, the Wild Wild West, brought out the cowboy and cowgirl in most. Horses, wagons and quite a few cowboy hats were seen strutting their stuff.

The next recreation department event is Thursday, Sept. 21 at the Edward Hospital Athletic and Event Center (55 Phelps Ave.) for the last Cruisin’ the Square Car and Bike Show of 2017.

This event features a classic car and bike show, live music by Forget Hannah, kids activities, and food and beverages.

BOLINGBROOK CELEBRATES 52ND PATHWAYS PARADE Parade-goers lined the streets of Bolingbrook to catch the 52nd Annual Pathways Parade, celebrating Bolingbrook’s diversity with the theme, “It’s a Small World.”

Nearly a hundred community organizations walked the parade route showing their pride the community, their organization and each other.

Grand Marshall Ed Schroeder of the Rocket Ice Skating Rink lead the parade; along with Peggie McMillan, Female Citizen of the Year; Calvin Quarles, Male Citizen of the Year, and the Spindels, the Family of the Year.

BOLINGBROOK PUBLIC SAFETY DIRECTOR RETIRES Bolingbrook’s top cop, Public Safety Director Tom Ross, retired after a 30-year career in public service.

Ross, was appointed as the village’s first Public Safety Director, in January 2015, when the village took a departure from having both a police and fire chief, combining the two roles, under Ross’ leadership.

Ross said serving the residents of Bolingbrook has been “an absolute honor” and said the decision to leave was not an easy one.

Claar said Bolingbrook is fortunate to have a solid group of public safety professionals already in leadership positions in both the Police and Fire Department and has named 26-year veteran Ken Teppel as the new public safety director.

Teppel has been currently serving as Deputy Police Chief. He is a lifelong resident of Bolingbrook who was first hired as a police cadet in 1988, and then as a patrol officer in 1990. He worked his way up through the ranks over the years including being the School Resource Officer at Bolingbrook High School. He holds two Masters Degrees and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy.

DOG HAUS TO OPEN IN ROMEOVILLE Dog Haus, the Pasadena, CA based gourmet hot dog, sausage and burger concept submitted development plans for a Romeoville location.The first business to locate at the Northwest corner of Renwick and Weber Roads was announced in September by American Development Partners Dog Haus.

“It is encouraging to see additional restaurant opportunities along the Weber Road corridor,” said Mayor John Noak.

“There are two lots remaining at this intersection. With the high traffic volume and the anticipated popularity of the Dog Haus, we anticipate the two remaining lots to develop quickly.”

VALLEY VIEW SCHOOL DISTRICT PASSES BUDGET The Valley View Community Unit School District 365u will move forward with an overall budget of $286 million for the 2017-2018 school year, continuing its technology learning initiative and remaining financially stable.

According to Assistant Superintendent Gary Grizaffi, the budget is balanced, using a small portion of the district’s reserves to support some expenses not covered by revenue.

The lion’s share of the budget covers salaries and benefits, with a 3.6 percent increase in labor costs; salaries for the additional instructional technology coach positions and staff, including teachers, bus drivers and monitors for the expanded Early Childhood Center.

Grizaffi further pointed out expenditures to include the continuation of the district’s 1:1 technology initiative utilizing a lease-purchase for chromebooks and information technology solutions; a $2.4 million scheduled debt service payment; an increase budget for outside placement tuition to $410,000; the addition of $75,000 to replace three driver’s education cars ; $68,000, representing 75 percent of the cost for crossing guards in Bolingbrook that were paid for by the village in the past.

The district’s budget show operating funds at approximately $241 million, with the majority coming from local resources $193.1 million; state funding at $60.43 million; and total federal dollars at $18.55 million.

ENTERPRISE ZONE EXPANDING As a member of the Des Plaines River Valley Enterprise Zone, Romeoville joined

its partners in expanding the zone to include additional manufacturing.

The Des Plaines River Valley Enterprise Zone, which includes Romeoville, Joliet, Rockdale, Lockport and Will County is an endeavor encouraged by the State. The IL Enterprise Zone Act defines an enterprise zone as a specific area designated by the State in cooperation with local government to receive various incentives and other benefits to stimulate economic activity and neighborhood revitalization.

According to the act, businesses located or expanding in an Illinois enterprise zone may be eligible for a number of incentives with such exemptions for taxes paid on building materials, investment tax credits or utility exemptions.

Recently, a few projects came before the Des Plaines River Valley Enterprise board, including Rock Run Crossing, which is being asked to be added to the zone, adding .4 square miles and Ecolab, an existing member, asking for an additional .2 square miles.

Romeoville Assistant Village Manager Dawn Caldwell said both projects are fully supported by the Enterprise Zone Board but because it does leave little room for expansion of further projects, the board is amending the original area to expand by up to 15 miles.

Romeoville Mayor John Noak pointed out that any benefits the businesses would receive come from the State.

VALLEY VIEW SCHOOLS MAKING STEADY PROGRESS Preliminary results based on state assessments show positive growth and achievement for the Valley View Community Unit School District with

its no excuses, core belief that every child can learn despite obstacles, still at the root of its own accountability as a district.

In an academic update, school administrators shared its perspective on PARCC and SAT state assessments.

Superintendent James Mitchem believes the success of the district comes from its core values, referring back to the “new view” put in place a few years prior, placing an emphasis on the ability of every student’s ability to learn despite any variables, be it socio economic status, race, gender or culture.

Within its PARCC assessment, which gauges college and career readiness, given to third through eighth graders, the general outlook shows positive growth, with notable trends in elementary math and middle school english language arts.

ROMEOVILLE TO PURSUE NEW TIF DISTRICTS The Village of Romeoville will be pursuing two new Tax Increment Financing Districts slated for two different business park areas.

One district would take shape along a section of Bluff Road. According to Village Attorney Rich Vogel the section is mainly industrial and would potentially accommodate future development industrial projects. The area encompasses an older part of the existing business park developed in the 1980s.

An additional TIF District would be pursued for a section along Independence Boulevard.

Vogel reiterated that before the TIF district can be created, a process must be followed including the adoption of

BOLINGBROOK MOURNS LOSS OF DEPUTY MAYOR A leader in every sense of the word, Bolingbrook felt the loss of Deputy Mayor and Trustee Leroy Brown Sr. who passed away unexpectedly Oct. 31 after heart surgery, leaving a “hole in Bolingbrook that will be hard to fill.”

A true family man, Brown was married to his wife Pat for 51 years and the father of three grown sons and five grandchildren.

Brown was a committed community volunteer for more than 40 years.

Whether he was heading up projects as deputy mayor, serving as safety coordinator for the Valley View School District, or hosting his public service community television show, Bridging the Gap, Brown’s purpose was to serve the community, taking other’s needs to heart.

He founded Bolingbrook’s Joyfest and was host and supporter of a wide range of local organizations who benefitted from Brown’s support. Brown was a former Vietnam Veteran who served in the elite Special Forces Green Beret Unit. He attended many annual events sponsored by the VFW 5917, American Legion Post 1288, Knights of Columbus, Black History Awareness Club, Heart Haven Outreach, Community Service Council and the HEART Organization to name a few.

Brown collected a long list of local honors including the Bolingbrook Area Chamber of Commerce’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009. In 2016, Brown was named Grand Marshall of

Top 10 athletes from Illinois Special thanks to the Chicago Sun-Times for this week’s story.

Illinois has produced many outstanding and game-changing athletes, so it’s a tough job to create any top 10 list. The Illinois Press Association and Illinois Associated Press Media Editors enlisted longtime Chicago Sun-Times sports reporter Mark Potash for the job. Here is his list of the top 10 athletes from Illinois.

1. RED GRANGE, WHEATON The early days of professional football were not pretty or promising — obviously not televised but also casually recognized. The Bears and Cardinals were relegated to secondary pages of the sports sections in Chicago, with college football dominant and even high school football more prominent.

All things considered, no player from Illinois has had more impact on a sport than Red Grange. He was a four-sport star at Wheaton High School who scored 75 touchdowns. He became a superstar as a three-time All-American at Illinois who famously rose to the occasion of the big game when he scored four touchdowns in the first quarter against Michigan in 1924 at newly dedicated Memorial Stadium — a 95-yard return of the opening kickoff, plus runs of 67, 56 and 44 yards. In those days he was a larger-than-life star, his No. 77 was almost as famous as he was.

2. DICK BUTKUS, CHICAGO The greatest tribute to Dick Butkus’s fabulous NFL career is that as time passes and the linebacker position evolves arguably more than any in football — bigger, faster, greater athletes with triple-digit career sack numbers — his stature continues to grow. The former Vocational High School and University of Illinois star still is No. 3 in most linebacker rankings. Some still say he’s the greatest linebacker to play the game.

He was named to the All-Pro team five times and the Pro Bowl eight times.

In 119 NFL games, he had 22 interceptions and 27 fumble recoveries. And the ferocity with which he played was real.

Buffone, who played next to Butkus for seven years, often recalled looking at a frothing Butkus on the field and thinking, “I’m glad he’s on my side.”

3. GEORGE MIKAN, JOLIET At 6-10, George Mikan was the first superstar of professional basketball — the first big-man who could run the floor and dominate at the rim on both ends.

His impact forced three rules changes:

goaltending, widening of the lane and the 24-second clock. When he played with the Minneapolis Lakers in 1949, the marquee at Madison Square Garden said it all: “GEO MIKAN V/S KNICKS.” An awkward, un-athletic prospect from Quigley Prep/ Joliet Catholic, Mikan flourished under Ray Meyer’s tutelage at DePaul, becoming a three-time All-American and two-time Player of the Year in college. He won seven professional league championships, including one with the Chicago American Gears of the fledgling National Basketball League and six with the Lakers.

4. ISIAH THOMAS, CHICAGO The epitome of the head-strong, will-to-win Chicago point guard, Isiah Thomas parlayed his innate skills and determination into superstardom and championships. A west side native, he took St. Joseph High School in Westchester from anonymity to second place in the Class AA state tournament in 1979. He led Indiana to the NCAA title in 1981 and was the spark plug on the Pistons’ back-to-back NBA titles in 1989 and 1990. Thomas was a 12-time NBA all-star and was inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame in 2000.

5. JACKIE JOYNER-KERSEE, EAST ST. LOUIS A basketball and track star at East St. Louis Lincoln and UCLA, Jackie JoynerKersee made her biggest mark in international track competitions, particularly the Olympics, where she won six medals in four different Olympics — including a silver medal in the heptathlon in 1984 in Los Angeles and gold in the heptathlon in 1988 in Seoul and 1992 in Barcelona.

She was named the greatest female athlete of all time by Sports Illustrated for Women in 1990.

6. OTTO GRAHAM, WAUKEGAN The Big Ten Player of the Year at Northwestern — where he also played basketball and baseball — in 1943, Otto Graham became a prolific quarterback and one of the great leaders of pro football history. He won seven league titles with Paul Brown’s Cleveland Browns in the old All-American Football Conference (1946-49) and NFL (1950, 1954 and 1955) and three NFL Most Valuable Player awards (1951, 1953, 1955).

7. RAY NITSCHKE, MAYWOOD A rough-and-tough, fierce competitor from Proviso High School, Ray Nitschke was a third-round draft pick by the Packers out of Illinois who was at the right

place at the right time — becoming an intimidating force as the leader of the great Packer defenses in the Vince Lombardi era. Nitschke won five NFL championships with the Packers, including the first two Super Bowls. He was the MVP of the 1962 championship game.

8. JIMMY CONNORS, BELLEVILLE The “Brash Basher of Belleville,” as tennis guru Bud Collins called him, the East St. Louis native was a gritty, gutty, unconventional player and non-conformist who is credited with sparking a re-birth in American tennis in the early 1970s. Jimmy Connors won eight Grand Slam titles, a record 109 singles titles and was ranked No. 1 in the world for 268 weeks, including a then-record 160 straight from 1974-77.

In 1974 at age 22, Connors went 99-4 and won 15 tournaments, including three Grand Slam events — the Australian Open, U.S. Open and Wimbledon.

He was barred from the French Open (the second leg) because of a contract with the World Team Tennis, costing him a chance to win the Grand Slam.

9. LOU BOUDREAU, HARVEY A Hall of Fame shortstop with the Cleveland Indians, Lou Boudreau had one of the greatest baseball seasons of all-time as player/manager in 1948. He won the American League batting title (.355) and MVP award and led the Indians to the World Series championship — the only title the Indians have won since 1920. Great knack for leadership, Boudreau won a state title in basketball as a sophomore at Thornton and Big Ten titles as team captain in basketball and baseball at Illinois.

10. BONNIE BLAIR, CHAMPAIGN Bonnie Blair won five gold medals at three different Olympic Games, capped by a dominating performance in 1994 at Lillehammer, when she won the 500-meters (by 0.36 seconds) and 1,000 meters (by a record-1.38 seconds) by wide margins. She was the first American to win an event (the 500-meters) in three consecutive Olympics. She won the Sullivan Award as the best amateur athlete in the U.S. in 1992.

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 3 the Pathways Parade. In 2017, he was named Paul Harris Fellow by the Bolingbrook Rotary Club and last month he was praised by Citizens Against Abuse for committing 19 years to defending the cause.

METRA MAKING ITS WAY TO ROMEOVILLE Construction continues on the Romeoville Metra stop, expecting to begin service in February.

Located near the intersection of 135th Street and New Avenue, the station will be the first new stop on the Heritage Corridor since Metra’s creation in 1984 and the first new stop on any Chicagoland Metra line since 2011. The Heritage Corridor line drops passengers off in Chicago at Union Station.

“The Village has been waiting a long time for this Metra stop,” remarked Mayor Noak. “This is going to be a convenience for area residents and businesses.”

The village board recently approved contracts for the landscaping surrounding the station and the vendor for the 123 parking spaces. Parking will be handled through Passport Parking, a company that services many major cities, including Chicago.

Reserved permit parking will be limited to 24 permits and will be sold on an annual ($250) and semiannual ($125) basis. Permits will go on sale in January and only Romeoville residents will be able to buy them during the first week. Permits will then be opened to everyone following that. ROMEOVILLE TARGET TO CLOSE IN FEBRUARY News broke in November that Target would be shutting the doors of underperforming stores and broke with it, shoppers’ spirits in Romeoville, a store listed to close.

Target is the anchor tenant at the Shops of Romeoville at the northeast corner of Airport and Weber Roads, one of the first stores to be built in the area that had become a catalyst for growth in creating a strong retail presence in Romeoville.

Target representative Erin Conroy said the company closes a handful of stores each year through a very intentional process to ensure the continued health of its portfolio.

“We have a rigorous process in place to evaluate the performance of every store on an annual basis, closing or relocating underperforming locations as needed. Typically, a store is closed as a result of seeing several years of decreasing profitability. This decision was not made lightly,” said Conroy.

The Romeoville store has 104 employees and Conroy said its team is one of its greatest assets, noting that all eligible Target store team members are being offered the option to transfer to other Target stores.

The store will remain open for holiday shopping and is slated to close Feb. 3, 2018. In total, Target is closing 12 stores this year, two in Illinois, including its Romeoville and Matteson, IL locations.

COMMUNITY SERVICE COUNCIL AND SPANISH COMMUNITY CENTER TEAM UP

The Community Service Council of Northern Will County and the Spanish Community Center joined together to form a HUD-approved agency in downtown Joliet that will assist clients with housing and financial literacy.

The two United Way of Will County agencies will provide a housing counselor onsite at the Spanish Community Center, Monday through Thursday, to offer services such as rental counseling, financial literacy and education, foreclosure prevention counseling, home pre-purchase counseling, and information about the Illinois Hardest Hit Fund.

“It’s possible that we’ll have even more programs to roll out in the near future,” said Robert Kalnicky, executive director for the Community Service Council of Northern Will County. “This is just the beginning of a long partnership with the Spanish Community Center.”

NEW TAX CREDIT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM TO BENEFIT CATHOLIC SCHOOLS As the basis for school funding was intensely debated this summer in the legislature, the fruits of its labor is beginning to show in favor for private schools.

In August, the Illinois House and Senate passed a comprehensive education funding bill which was signed into law by the Governor. According to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Joliet, additional details now are beginning to unfold, including a new fiveyear program for Tax Credit Scholarships (TCS) for students in private schools.

Scholarships can be awarded based on a family’s income level in relation to the federal poverty level.

For example, according to the Illinois Policy Institute, scholarships may be awarded to families whose income does not exceed 300 percent of the federal poverty level. For example, a family of four earning $73,800 or less would qualify.

Local parishes released information regarding the tax credit scholarship, encouraging students to check for eligibility. For students whose household income is less than 185 percent of the federal poverty level, the scholarship will be 100 percent of tuition and necessary fees; for students whose household income is between 185 percent and 250 percent, scholarships will average 75 percent of tuition and necessary fees; and for students whose household income is above 250 percent, scholarships will average 50 percent of tuition and necessary fees.

OF 2017 A continued look back at the year in sports from July until December

JOLTIN’ JOE It is often difficult for baseball players from small schools to grab the attention of the top colleges and professional scouts.

That was never the case for Joe Donovan.

Sure, his brother Charlie paved a road for Joe, but the younger Donovan hit that road like a runaway 18-wheeler.

As a freshman, he was the starting catcher on a Westmont team that placed fourth in the state in Class 2A and he spent the next three seasons assaulting the Sentinel record books – ending his career holding 20 career records.

He holds the mark for team wins (97), games played (145), runs scored (205), hits (210), extra base hits (99), home runs (36), grand slams (4), RBI (154) and slugging percentage (.891).

This season, Donovan batted .523 with a .628 on base percentage and a 1.171 slugging percentage – all Westmont single season records.

For all of that, Joe Donovan is

the first-ever recipient of Voyager Media’s Charlie Donovan Player of the Year Award.

This season is the first year the award is named after Charlie Donovan, who was a three-time Voyager Media Player of the Year and died in November of 2015. It will continue to bear his name going forward.

Donovan headed to the University of Michigan, however, he was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 33rd round of the MLB Draft.

WELL ROUNDED Every season, the Voyager Media area has several amazing athletes in many sports, but only a select few can compete at a high level in multiple sports – of those, Voyager Media selects one male and one female from each of its five zones as nominees for the Voyager Media Multisport Athlete of the Year.

Of the five males and five females – one of each are the selected as the winners of the AOY title.

Female: Brooklyn Bachmann Joliet/Sentinel Zone Three-sport superstar from Minooka, Bachmann wins her second-straight Athlete of the Year honor.

This season, she averaged an area-best 20.9 points per game, along with 3.5 rebounds on the basketball court. She ended her career as the all-time leader in points in school history with 1,523.

A Voyager Media All-Area team member, she was named to the All-Southwest Prairie Conference team and was Class 3A/4A IBCA all-state honorable mention. She will continue her basketball career at Bemidji State University in Minnesota.

On the volleyball court, the senior setter led the Indians with 993 assists, 180 digs and 26 aces to go with 43 blocks for the Indians.

She helped Minooka reach the state finals, where it battled for a title and fell in the three sets to the nation’s No. 1 team in the Class 4A state finals.

“She would dive through bleachers to keep that ball alive for our offense to hit the ball. She could push the ball to the pin no matter where she was and that is truly what kept us alive when things were off. She took ahold of this young team and taught them how to be confident and want to win.”

In the spring, Bachmann was again a state qualifier in the Class 3A pole vault.

Male: Brady Miller – Plainfield Zone The Plainfield North junior had a stellar season for the Tigers in three sports.

On the football field, Miller quarterbacked the Tigers to the IHSA Class 7A state final game – ultimately placing second.

On the season he completed 151-of-259 passes for 1,998 yards and 21 touchdowns. He also rushed 39 times for 279 yards and a pair of scores.

During the winter, Miller was one of the veterans leading the North basketball team.

Then, in the spring, he again set his sights on a state run again

with the North baseball team.

Miller pitched the final game of the season for the Tigers – a loss to Neuqua Valley in the Class 4A sectional final.

On the season on the mound, Miller had a team-high 60 innings pitched with a 4-3 record and a 1.40 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, while posting 68 strikeouts. He was an AllSPC¬ selection.

At the plate, he hit .333 with a .393 on base percentage and a .547 slugging percentage. He has 39 hits with six home runs, with 36 RBI and scored 25 runs.

Miller was a Voyager Media AllArea selection in both football and baseball.

STARS SHINE Last summer, Joliet was the epicenter of the Frontier League as the Slammers hosted the annual league All Star game and corresponding events.

The activities included everything from a golf outing at Mistwood Golf Club to a beer fest to a replica of the Collins Street prison as a giveaway to fans.

The highlight of the week was the game in which the Slammers and the East won 4-1 over the

West.

Bralin Jackson of the Washington Wild Things went 2 for 4 with a pair of RBI and earned the game’s Most Valuable Player award.

The day before the game, Jeff Gardner of the Evansville Otters won the home run derby with his 14th homer of the round and 41st of the evening. Gardner entered the break leading the Frontier League with 13 total home runs.

Inducted were: Chase Burch – he played for the Traverse City Beach Bums from 2010-13. He finished his Frontier League career with .283 batting average, 68 home runs, and 235 RBI and helped the Beach Bums to the 2010 Frontier League Championship Series; Travis Garcia, who played for the Ohio Valley Redcoats (2005), Chillicothe Paints (2006-08). He was the 2007 league Most Valuable Player and posted a Frontier League career .304 batting average, 57 home runs and 275 RBI. He paced Chillicothe to the 2006 Championship Series; Gator McBride, who played for the Chillicothe Paints (1998-99).

In 1998 he led the Paints to the Championship Series. He batted .423 with 27 home runs and 111

RBI in 108 Frontier League games before signing with the Boston Red Sox; Pete Pirman, who played for the Evansville Otters (2002), Richmond Roosters (2003) and Kalamazoo Kings (2004-06). The 2005 Most Valuable Player led Kalamazoo to its only Frontier League title. He is tied for the single season record with 100 RBI in 2005 and posted a .300 batting average with 47 home runs and 247 RBI in his Frontier League career.

Joining the players was Special Contributor Steve Sturgill.

He was the first president of the Frontier League and one of the original league owners, running the Portsmouth Explorers in 1993 and 1994.

He is the only person other than Bill Lee to have his signature stamped on the Frontier League baseball.

QUEEN OF THE 3 Joliet native Allie Quigley was drafted by the Seattle Storm of the WNBA with the 22nd pick of the 2008 draft.

She was released by Seattle before playing a game, but rejoined SEE YIR PAGE 9

the Storm for the 2011 season.

Last season Quigley again returned to Seattle — ­ only this time, she was the storm In front of more than 15,000 fans at Seattle’s KeyArena and several family members from Joliet, Quigley won the WNBA ThreePoint Contest and played in her first-ever WNBA All-Star game.

She beat out Sue Bird, Maya Moore and Jasmine Thomas in the opening round, then defeated Sugar Rodgers in the final to take home the trophy.

ZONE REPEAT In the 17 years that the PONY Zone tournament has been held in Bay Ridge, MI, there has never been a team that has qualified for the tournament three consecutive years – until now.

Crest Hill selected its 13-player All-Star roster from a total of 24 13-and-14-year old players, while some programs select from 100 or more players.

To advance to the tournament, Crest Hill needed to defeat the Kankakee All Stars twice in the double elimination tournament.

MAC HONORED Eural “Mac” McLaughlin was a 5-foot-1, 118-pound quarterback his senior year at Dunbar High School in 1959.

In his final high school game, McLaughlin faced CVS star Dick Butkus, who promptly spit in his face mask from about eight yards away.

It was the last time anyone disrespected McLaughlin.

“That was the first time and the last time I saw Butkus,” McLaughlin said. “He couldn’t catch me. I was an angry little man.”

That was one of the stories McLaughlin related during his acceptance speech Sunday after receiving the Lifetime Service Award from the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Illinois Chapter.

Despite his small stature, McLaughlin, who grew to be 5-6, went on to play three sports at North Central College, lettering in football, wrestling and baseball, before spending a year in the Canadian Football League with the Saskatchewan Rough Riders.

After returning to the Chicago area, McLaughlin began what became a legendary career as a wrestling coach at Joliet Central, leading the Steelmen to a 508192-9 record over a 40-year career that ended in 2010.

Under McLaughlin’s guidance,

Good things have come to McLaughlin, who was inducted into the Illinois Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1991.

He retired seven years ago to spend more time with his family but found he couldn’t stay away, so he now works four hours per day monitoring the cafeteria.

Downers Grove South athletic director Randy Konstans, who held the same job at Lockport, was one of five other individuals also awarded the Lifetime Service Award.

SPECIAL VISIT Just days before the Chicago Bears Oct. 29 tilt with the Saints, veteran outside linebacker Sam Acho took time to come to Plainfield Central and speak with athletes as part of a program sponsored by Powerade.

He didn’t just make an appearance. Acho addressed studentathletes about sports and life and then took time to sign autographs, take photos and answer an array of questions.

The ‘Power Your School’ campaign awarded 500 schools across the country a $2,000 each for its athletic programs - totaling $1 million donated by the sports drink company this year.

Plainfield Central, chosen because of District 202’s partnership with the brand as well as the success of its teams, was the lone winner in the Chicagoland area.

STATE CHAMPS

At the IHSA 3A boys cross country championships, a much anticipated dual between the top two teams in the state - Downers Grove North and Neuqua Valley never materialized.

On a foggy, overcast day, North easily won their first state title, placing their five scoring runners in the top 27, to easily outdistance the Wildcats 73-149.

North took control of the race early with all five runners up front from the start. It never changed the remainder of the race and the Trojans reversed the placing from a year ago when Neuqua beat the Trojans.

It was only the second boys title in school history, following the 2004 8A football title.

The Trojans only had a 17 second split between their top five

runners, with four earning AllState honors by placing in the top 25.

Jacob Ridderhoff lead the Trojans with an eighth place finish (14:36) over the three-mile course and was followed closely by fellow seniors Nick Chudzik in 19th (14:44) and Miles Christensen in 21st (14:46). Junior Jack Roberts was 22nd (14:47) and senior Sam McColl finished 27th (14:53) to secure the title.

ALL-STATER Up until Christian Duarte made the Illinois High School Soccer Coaches Association AllState team as a junior in 2014, Romeoville had only featured one other All-State selection — Tom Kowalski in 1988.

The year Duarte made the first of his two All-State teams, there was a freshman named David Cahue on the team that made the coaches take notice.

In four years, Cahue went from a freshman that turned heads during a preseason scrimmage, to a varsity starter his first year to the third All-Stater in program history.

He now joins Duarte and Kowalski as a permanent fixture on the Romeoville wall of fame.

BEST SHOWING The Plainfield Co-op girls swimming and diving team had their best-ever finish at this season’s IHSA Sectional at Neuqua Valley High School by racking up 167 points — good for a program record fourth place.

The team is sending swimmers to the state meet in 10 different events, another school-best.

Sophomore Kali Franckowiak led the way winning the 200yard freestyle in 1 minute, 50.80 seconds and the 500 freestyle in 4:59.44.

At state Meunier exceeded her expectations at the state meet Nov. 18 at New Trier High School, advancing to the finals for the first time to earn win her first medal.

Meunier finished 10th during the preliminary round of the 200yard individual medley, advancing to the consolation heat. She finished 12th in the finals with a time of 2:06.67.

SECOND 2ND After reaching the IHSA Class state championship match a season ago, Minooka had one goal in mind this year and that was not only to return, but to take one step further this year and win the state title.

The Indians did make that re-

turn showing to the state title match, however, Minooka fell in three sets to Marist.

Minooka claimed the first set 25-22, but dropped the next two 25-22, 25-15.

While the Indians were disappointed with the outcome, they understand the magnitude of what they have done over the past two seasons and how hard it is to finish second out of the 174 teams that opened the Class 4A playoffs.

The Indians are the first public school team in Class 4A to play in back-to-back state championship games since Lyons Township and Cary-Grove met in 2009 and 2010.

ROCKY TOPS ALL-AREA When it comes to Minooka volleyball, there is no name that is more prominent than Perinar.

And, as the final of the five siblings — that all are, or have, played volleyball at the Division-I level — senior Rocky Perinar just may have saved the best for last.

This season, the youngest Perinar posted 351 kills, 90 blocks, 230 digs and 22 aces. She was named to the All-Southwest Prairie Conference team and helped the Indians to a second-straight IHSA Class 4A second-place trophy.

For her accomplishments, Perinar has been named the 2017 Voyager Media Player

FOOTBALL POY Benet Academy advanced to the IHSA Class 7A state semifinal game for the second-straight season this year and after suffering injuries on the offensive side of the football all season, it was the defense that really stepped up and helped carry the Redwings.

The Benet defense allowed only 17.5 points per game this season, including five games holing teams to less than 14 points and a pair of shutouts – including a blanking of No. 1 seed Rockton Hononegah on the playoffs.

At the center of that defense was senior Devin Petersen, who posted 167 tackles on the season, including 54 solo tackles. He had 12 tackles for loss, two sacks, four forced fumbles and one interception.

For his efforts, Petersen is the 2017 Voyager Media Defensive Player of the Year.

OFFENSIVE POY When Maine South fell to eventual Class 8A state champions Lincoln-Way East in the state semifinals this season, it stopped the Hawks from defending its state title – this year in Huskie Stadium in DeKalb at Northern Il-

linois University.

For senior running back Fotis Kokosioulis, the loss only delayed him getting on Brigham Field by a few months.

The 5-foot-9, 173-pound running back has committed to play for Northern Illinois next season.

This year he put up 1,626 yards on 182 carries and 24 touchdowns and never fumbled the football.

He tacked on 31 receptions for 350 yards and five scores.

For his efforts, Kokosioulis is the 2017 Voyager Media Offensive Player of the Year.

He is an Illinois High School Football Coaches Association AllState selection for Class 8A, was the CSL South Offensive Player of the Year, is nominated for the Academic All-State team with a 3.54/4 GPA and is a candidate for the Illinois Gatorade Player of the Year.

For his career, Kokosioulis passed 2009 Voyager Media Player of the Year Matt Perez for school records with 3,952 yards rushing and 58 touchdowns as well as racking up 6,351 all-purpose yards and 73 total scores.

RETURN AND A WIN When Sam Quigley-Smith took over the head women’s basketball coach at Lewis University in May, the one thing she didn’t have to change was the circle around Dec. 5 on her calendar.

As coach at the University of St. Francis, the battle between the two programs was big because of the proximity of the schools and the local rivalry of the programs. In fact, last year, QuigleySmith’s Saints upset the Flyers in Romeoville.

After accepting the position at Lewis, however, the date took on new meaning as it was QuigleySmith’s return to the court that bears her father’s name inside the USF Sullivan Center.

Not only did Quigley-Smith make the return trip to Joliet, she brought with her members of the coaching staff, including former USF assistants Dan McCarthy and Michael Delrose, who coached with her at USF and Charnelle Reed, who played for her last season for the Saints.

Joining the coaching staff in their return was senior guard Chrissi Ekhomu, who played at USF under Quigley-Smith the last three seasons.

This year at Lewis, she is averaging 3.4 points per game and posted a season-best 10 points in Lewis’ 59-46 win over St. Francis.

Lesson learned: Don’t co-sign for a loan Sorry, but you guys will have to pay something to make this go away DEAR DAVE, My wife co-signed on a loan for an old boyfriend five or six years ago. Now, a collection agency is after her for the remaining $5,000. We make about $90,000 a year combined, and our attorney recommended we file Chapter 7 bankruptcy. The idea of filing bankruptcy scares me. Is there a better way to handle this?

JEFFERY DEAR JEFFERY, Your attorney doesn’t sound very bright. A bankruptcy stays on your record for years. It’s just plain stupid to consider trashing your financial life over $5,000.

This collector bought the loan for pennies on the dollar. It’s an old debt, and that means there are very low expectations for collection. At the same time, your wife did co-sign for the loan.

If you have the money, and you can pay it off without hurting yourselves financially, do it. That’s the right thing, both morally and legally. If you don’t have that kind of cash on hand, try haggling with them. See if you can get them to agree to settle for $2,500. Remember to get this agreement in writ-

ing before you send them a dime, and do not give them access to your bank account.

Chances are they’ll threaten to sue and all that stuff, but my guess is you can work out something on an old loan like this. It may take a couple of weeks and a little patience, but that’s a small price to pay if it saves you $2,500.

Sorry, but you guys will have to pay something to make this go away. And I hope it teaches you both a valuable lesson — never co-sign on a loan!

—DAVE DEAR DAVE, What do you think about online investing apps, and the way they allow you to jump in and out of stocks for really low fees?

ANONYMOUS DEAR ANONYMOUS, I don’t think about them, and I don’t use them. And I don’t play single stocks — period.

There’s a ton of research out there showing that people who play individual stocks on their own — or with their broker, or

with a golfing buddy — see a rate of return of about seven percent on average. You can make anywhere from 10 to 14 percent, on average, with good growth stock mutual funds.

I could probably play single stocks more intelligently than most people, but why? If the average is noticeably less than I’m seeing with my mutual funds, why bother going there? Plus, with a mutual fund portfolio, you’ve got

someone who does this kind of thing for a living managing and researching your investments for you in your best interest.

I don’t have an app on my phone that lets me trade stocks, nor do I plan on getting one. There’s nothing wrong with apps, in general, but I’ll never recommend jumping in and out of single stocks as a method of investing.
