New JJC campus takes shape Construction began last fall on the new 50,000 squarefoot building now facing 135th Street, just off Weber Road

The face of Joliet Junior College’s Romeoville campus is steadily changing with its new two-story building rising up out of the farmlands adjacent to its current facility.

Construction began last fall on the new 50,000 square-foot building that is the entrance of the campus, now facing 135th Street, just off Weber Road.

It is one of the school’s main projects as outlined in the updated 2013 JJC Master Plan, and long considered a priority by administration in hopes to match the explosive growth of the area with academic offerings. Since its inception, the Romeoville campus, first built in 1993, has seen an explosion in enrollment, some 45 percent over the past 10 years.

According to JJC, because of this new expansion, the campus will now be able to offer two complete degrees. Students will be able to earn an associate in arts degree or an associate in science degree entirely from the Romeoville Campus location.

Since October 2014, Demonica Kemper Architects (DKA) has worked with college committees

to assess the specific programming needs ensuring that the buildings will meet end-user’s’ needs.

The lower level will be dedicated to student support services including career counseling, guidance, a bookstore, and cafeteria.

The second level will house science laboratories and classroom space.

An executive summary of the plan shows that the 40-acre site at the Romeoville campus should, according to school officials, more than adequately accommodate the needed academic addition(s) to the west of the existing onestory building, as well as an addition to the east for new student development space. While the existing parking capacity is currently meeting the needs of this location, both parking lots could easily be expanded to the west for future capacity needs, according to the plan.

In essence, the new Romeoville expansion is being designed to make it a self-sufficient campus similar to its main campus in Joliet.

JJC officials say the project remains on time and budget and the new expansion building is expected to be open for classes by the Fall 2017 semester.

Library looks to increase offerings White Oak Library will be pursuing a referendum on the April ballot

To meet demand for an increase in services for its patrons, the White Oak Library District will be pursuing a referendum on the April ballot.

In the past fiscal year, the library checked out 674,163 items to its patrons; a 7.8 percent increase in usage over the previous year, and a 21 percent increase over usage from five years ago.

Library Director Scott Pointon explains the library needs to expand its hours of operation to meet the demands of its users, opening earlier on weekdays and adding more hours on weekends.

If approved, the referendum would also allow the district to offer more classes, and create a digital media lab where patrons can transfer VHS to DVD, restore family photos, create cutting edge promotional materials, record audio podcasts, film captivating videos, compose music, among other digi-

tal projects.

“I hope the residents of our library District realize how much of a value our libraries are, as compared to how small of an increase we are asking of them,” said Director Scott Pointon.

The library district will pose a referendum that would raise the

limiting rate for tax purposes to 22.6 cents; essentially $1.38 per month for the average home in the district or $10 more in taxes per year for a property valued at $100,000.

Pointon also reminded voters that the White Oak Library District is different and separate from

the Plainfield Public Library referendum and the two do not have any connection. Voters will not be voting for both referendums. Voters living in the White Oak Library district will only be voting for the White Oak Library District referendum. The Plainfield referendum will not affect White Oak patron’s property taxes.

The White Oak Library District consists of three branches including Crest Hill, Lockport, and Romeoville and unincorporated areas, serving 80,000 local residents. Voters shot down the referendum for the White Oak Library District for a second time in the November 2016 election.

Marathon to run through village

Bolingbrook will play host to its first half-marathon come March, hoping to attract runners from near and far.

The inaugural AMITA Health St. Paddy’s Half Marathon and 5K is Sunday, March 19.

According to race officials, the event expects to draw 1,500 par-

ticipants, with hundreds already signed up, the course, is now considered a desired run.

The 13.1-mile race will kick off at Bolingbrook Village Hall, 375 Briarcliff Road and run along Remington Boulevard to Royce Road and wind through village streets. The route was carefully mapped out with assistance from the Bolingbrook Police Department and will not cross Route 53

Manley advocates for economic agenda Manley supports proposals to make state’s tax code fairer by reducing corporate income tax by at least 50 percent

Looking to stimulate development in Illinois and strengthen the middle class, state Rep. Natalie Manley, D-Joliet, is backing an economic reform agenda that would lower the cost of doing business, reward economic investment and boost education funding.

“The last two years have been difficult, as the lack of a responsible

spending plan and non-stop partisan rhetoric have prevented the stability that businesses look for,” Manley said. “I agree with Governor Rauner that Illinois must do more to improve its business climate. However, instead of working to reduce middle-class wages in order to pad the profits of big corporations, we need to approach our

economy in a way that encourages growth and levels the playing field for small and medium-sized businesses, while protecting middleclass families.”

Manley supports proposals to make the state’s tax code fairer by reducing the corporate income tax by at least 50 percent, giving small and medium-sized businesses a better opportunity to compete. Additionally, Manley will push to make the tax code fairer to small employers by closing loopholes that have allowed large corporations to avoid

paying their fair share. Manley’s economic reform agenda also calls for stronger protections for Illinois jobs by prohibiting companies that ship jobs overseas from receiving any taxpayer-funded incentives.

Instead, she backs an extension of the Economic Development for a Growing Economy (EDGE) tax credit program, which in recent years has generated economic investment and jobs in Illinois.

Additionally, Manley is calling for reforms that raise middle-class wages and let working families

keep more of what they earn, including an increase in minimum wage, expanded income tax credits for working families and increased funding for elementary and secondary education.

“A strong school system is critical to building a strong middle class and creating a region that businesses want to move to,” Manley said. “Our area is an important economic generator for the state and for this part of the country. We need to make sure we are fulfilling our potential.”

Hospitals penalized for harming patients Government has penalized hospitals in an effort to prevent avoidable patient deaths in hospitals Anyone facing a hospital stay for themselves or a family member should look at new data the government released right before Christmas showing that it http://khn.org/news/769-hospitals-penalized-for-patient-safety-in2017-data-table/ penalized 769 of the nation’s hospitals for having high rates of patient injuries. The monetary penalties – a reduction for the year in their reimbursement for treating Medicare patients – do bite. Larger teaching hospitals could lose as much as $1 million or more.

This is the third year the government has penalized hospitals in an effort to prevent avoidable patient deaths in hospitals, which emerged as a big issue about 18 years ago. This year the government added injuries caused by MRSA and C diff infections to their list of other harmful conditions patients contract in a hospital such as urinary tract and surgical site infections resulting from hysterectomies and colon procedures. MRSA – a staphylococcus bacterium - can cause pneumonia and bloodstream infections. C diff is a germ that can multiply in the gut when patients are taking other antibiotics to kill other germs.

While some facilities like those serving children and psychiatric patients and critical care hospitals are exempt from penalties, this year’s data show that more than 200 facilities, including some of the nation’s most well-known hospitals, have the dubious distinction of being on the government’s penalty list for all three years. They include the Cleveland Clinic, Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago and Boston’s Brigham and Women’s

Hospital. The message for patients: A hospital’s TV advertising campaign for its great cancer care may obscure significant safety issues.

Have penalties and other harm reduction initiatives made hospital care safer?

This time 347 hospitals penalized last year are not on the bad-guy list, which shows that some are paying attention.

But hospital injuries have not vanished.

The federal Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality says there were 3.8 million hospital injuries last year. That translates to 115 injuries per 1,000 patient stays.

Antibiotic-resistant bacteria infect some two million people annually. One quarter of a million cases occur in hospitals.

I wanted to know why more progress hasn’t been made. While the new government data reflect improvements at many hospitals, why is there still such a long way to go? I rang up Lisa McGiffert, the head of Consumers Union’s Safe Patient Project who has been a leading voice since 2004 to bring attention to infections and medical errors. She told me there’s been a significant shift in the way hospitals view infections. Twelve years ago they used to say they were not preventable. “Now, most people in healthcare believe most infections are.”

In the early days of her campaign, government agencies like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were reluctant to back public reporting of hospital mistakes and other data to help patients. Now they support it. Still,

she says, “what I am most frustrated about is the lack of urgency in the country and at the agencies for eliminating these infections. They are aware of them, but there’s not a sense of urgency to stop them.”

The financial penalties levied by the Medicare agency have made a significant difference because they get the hospital CEO’s attention. Unless the CEO is involved, change is not going to happen.

But the penalties along with the entire program to eliminate hospital-acquired conditions were authorized under the Affordable Care Act. They could be in jeopardy if the law is repealed. Some hospitals probably would be happy if they disappeared.

Patients need to make use of the data that is available and study it to inform their decisions about where to go for care when they have a choice. McGiffert advises looking at how your hospital compares to similar facilities. Look for improvement. If a hospital was penalized the first or second year of the program but not this year, that indicates it could be serious about safety. Also look to see if a facility’s scores are moving in the right direction. If the numbers show they are not performing as well on some dimension as they previously were, patients need to ask why.

Some states and some hospitals are using other strategies. Illinois and California, for example, have passed legislation that requires hospitals to screen for MRSA when patients are admitted.

Some hospitals have stewardship programs to address the overuse of antibiotics, which contributes to drug resistance.

To start learning about your hospital, consult the government’s Hospital Compare website https://www.medicare.gov/hospitalcompare/search. html. Follow the prompts to find the hospital you are looking for and then search the tabs for “complications.”

This will let you look at actual numbers to help you see how your hospital is doing.

Bolingbrook coach Chris Smith stayed away from the obvious.

But he did talk about the notso-obvious.

After a scoring error gave Simeon two extra points in the third quarter on Saturday, Bolingbrook mounted a late fourth-quarter comeback but dropped a 56-55 decision at the City-Suburban Shootout at Young High School.

Instead of harping on a scoring error that led to two extra points for Simeon and affected the outcome of the non-conference clash between two ranked teams, Smith focused on his team’s long-range potential.

With a collection of talented and athletic players, the Raiders have the potential to be a team to contend within the Class 4A playoffs next month.

“We’re still looking for continuity and more senior leadership,” Smith said. “At this point, that’s what we need. We need senior leadership to carry us through the playoffs. As bad as we played, the state is wide open. There have been a lot of upsets. We still have a long way to go. We want to play our best basketball at the end of February going into March.

We will get back in the gym and put it together. If we could put some of the garbage behind us, just play as a unit and a team, we can be good. Our team focus is not there right now. We don’t play as a unit. When we come together, we have talent. Maybe it’s on me as a coach to put it together.”

Men’s All-Decade Team from the ‘90s The Lewis University Athletics Department will introduce the All-Decades Men’s and Women’s Basketball Teams of the 1990s on Saturday at halftime of the Flyers’ showdown against Illinois Springfield (3 PM).

The men’s team includes John Adams, Rich Aigner, Marc Boone, Zeke Clerk, Tarrie Monroe, Milosh Pujo, Scott Riley, Roger Suchy, Josh Virostko and Jeremy Warner.

“The Lewis men’s basketball team has had a rich tradition,” Lewis Director of Athletics Dr. John Planek said. “Bringing these men back to campus recognizes their contributions to the program.”

The Flyers will also retire the No. 44 of former Lewis great Wayne Molis. He will join the previously retired numbers of Tom Kennedy (#14) and Larry Tucker (#52) in the rafters of Neil Carey Arena.

Molis, a 1980 inductee into the Lewis Athletics Hall of Fame, competed fo the Flyers from 1963-65.

He was the team MVP following the 1964-65 campaign, as he averaged a team-best 23.3 points-per-

game for Lewis. Following that season, Molis was drafted in the 10th round by the New York Knicks. He still holds the Lewis school-record for field goals in a game with 20 buckets against Chicago Teachers College in the 1963-64 campaign.

JOHN ADAMS (1988-90, 1991-93) Adams, a 2001 Lewis Hall of Fame inductee, is 18th in schoolhistory in scoring with 1,272 points. He ranks in several categories in the Lewis career record book including blocked shots (4th, 96), field goal percentage (7th, .592), rebounding average (8th, 6.897), field goals made (9th, 498), free throws made (9th, 275), rebounds (9th, 607). His name is also represented on the single-season, school-records including scoring average (2nd, 20.9 ppg., ‘92-93), rebounding average (4th, 9.807 rpg., ‘92-93), field goals (9th, 210, ‘9293), points (10th, 544, ‘92-93) and field goal percentage (10th, .6245, ‘91-92). As a senior, he led the Great Lakes Valley Conference in scoring with 21 points-pergame on his way to All-GLVC and All-District First Team honors. In 1992-93, Aigner claimed All-GLVC Second Team and All-District First Team accolades. He is ranked in Lewis’ Top Ten career categories in three-pointers (3rd, 189), free throws made (4th, 387), field goals made (4th, 627), steals (t-5th, 152), rebounding average (7th, 7.3 rpg.), assists (8th, 298) and free throw percentage (8th, .8096).

MARC BOONE (1994-98) Boone is 28th in school history with 1,136 points, averaging 10.5 points-per-game.

He is well represented in the Lewis career record books in assists (335, 5th), three-pointers (152, 6th), free throw percentage (81.0%, 7th), steals (143, 7th) and assists-per-game average (3.1 apg., 7th).

ZEKE CLERK (1993-97) Clerk is 29th in school-history with 1,129 points scored. He is eighth in school history in career free throws made (278). He appeared in 108 games, including 78 starts, and averaged 10.5 pointsper-game.

TARRIE MONROE (1999-2000) Monroe played one season for the Flyers, but was a dominant performer who averaged 17.3 points and 10.3 rebounds-per-game on his way to National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) AllAmerica, All-Region and All-GLVC First Team accolades.

MILOSH PUJO (1995-99) Pujo, a 2004 Lewis Hall of Fame

inductee, is the leading scorer in Lewis history in the Division II era with 1,880 points (16.9 ppg.) and second in scoring overall. He was the team’s leading scorer in his sophomore (17.0 ppg.), junior (18.1 ppg.) and senior (20.1 ppg.) seasons, becoming just the second Flyer to top the team scoring chart three times. As a freshman, Pujo was named the GLVC Newcomer of the Year and earned Division II Bulletin National All-Freshman team honors. A three-time team MVP and All-Region selection, Pujo was a three-time All-GLVC First Team selection. Following his senior campaign, Pujo was named to the NCAA Division II All-America team by the NABC, Basketball Times and Basketball News.

SCOTT RILEY (1994-98) A 6-foot-6 forward, Riley is fourth in school-history with a .581 career field goal percentage.

He appeared in 109 games, including 78 starts, and scored 621 points.

ROGER SUCHY (1994-96) An All-GLVC Second Team selection in 1996, Suchy appeared in 27 games, including 23 starts, and averaged 15.0 points-per-game.

He knocked down 53.8% (35for-65) of his three-point attempts in 1995-96, good for second in school-history for a single season.

JOSH VIROSTKO (1998-2001) Virostko appeared in 79 games for the Flyers and is seventh in school-history with 151 threepointers. In 2000-01, he had his best season as a Flyer, leading the squad in scoring with 14.5 pointsper-game on his way to All-GLVC Second Team accolades.

He holds Lewis’ single-season record for free throw percentage, as he knocked down 96.1% (49for-51) of his attempts in 2000-01.

JEREMY WARNER (1998-2000) Warner was an Honorable Mention All-GLVC selection in 19992000, as he averaged 11.8 points and 9.4 rebounds-per-game.

Bench helps Spartans hold off Plainfield N.

Things were looking good for Plainfield North at the end of the third quarter of its game against Romeoville Friday night.

The Spartans just lost three starters for the game after a mini skirmish to end the quarter, which had three Spartans leave the bench, an automatic ejection.

However, the bench stepped up and carried the Spartans to a 59-47 win, thanks to solid play from Ibam Padilla, Destin Whitaker and DeMonte Dale.

“Hats off to my bench for taking care of that victory for us,” Romeoville coach Marc Howard said. “We’re playing about 10 guys and those bench guys are a big reason we are on a 10-game winning streak. And what can I say about my captain DeAndre Heckard. He controlled the game for us. And Dontia Johnson did a great job defending (North’s Justin Wilson). He was able to shut him down in the second half.

There were a lot of big contributions in the second half and everyone that touched the floor stepped up big time. The guys were a little fired up.”

“I think it was a mindset,” North coach Bob Krahulik said.

“Our kids knew some of their players were gone and it was almost like a relaxation sort of thing. We didn’t play as hard in the fourth quarter as we did earlier.”

A basket by Heckard at the end of the third quarter gave the Spartans a 43-40 lead, but

started the controversy when Heckard thought he was fouled and eventually led to Spartan players leaving the bench. The scene was quickly controlled, but the damage was done for the Spartans.

“I told the kids we have to be smarter than that,” Howard said.

“We can’t come off the bench. We have to use our heads. The bench told the starters, ‘we got you.’ It was a learning experience. Some of the guys don’t know all the rules. They will learn real quick.

I think the kids just want to win and they are starting to enjoy that winning feeling.”

North made one of two free throws to open the fourth quarter on a technical foul but then the Spartans would go on to pull away.

“We didn’t run a good offense,” Krahulik said. “We did too much one-one-one rather than running our offense. That is what happens when you go one on five. There was no ball movement in the fourth quarter. We moved the ball well in the first half and even some in the third quarter. But then we got away from it. In the fourth quarter we have to execute.”

Justin WIlson scored 20 points and Brady Miller added 11 for North. Heckard’s 13 points led a balanced attack for Romeoville.

“I got off to a hot start but I had to get everyone involved,” Heckard said. “North got on a run and scored some points and I had to calm everyone down and distribute the ball.”

Parks & Rec hosts 39th Library accepting annual Open House applications to The Village of Romeoville Parks and Recreation hosted its annual Open House event the week of Jan. 9. Each day centered on a different theme: Monday Discount Day, Tuesday Art Show, Wednesday Sports Night, Thursday Fitness Night, and Friday Family Fun Tailgating Party.

“This event invites the community to enjoy our various services for no charge for an entire week,” said Kelly Rajzer, Executive Director.

Friday’s FREE Family Fun Tailgating Party showcased program demonstrations from gymnastics, karate, dance, and taekwondo.

Being direct and upfront is not being mean DEAR DAVE, My friend and I are roommates, and we’ve always had an agreement that we split each of the bills 50-50. We both work and have decent jobs, but for the last couple of months she’s been really late in paying her half of the bills. She says she’s broke. I don’t want to be mean, but how can I approach her about this situation?

ALICE DEAR ALICE, I understand that you don’t want to be mean to a friend, but situations like this should be addressed quickly and directly. No matter whether you’re talking about friendships or business dealings, to be unclear is to be unkind.

Turn off the television, sit down with her, and have a kind but firm conversation. Let her know that the roommate agreement is no longer working because she isn’t paying her bills on time. Make sure she understands that the two of you are not going to be able to stay there together anymore unless she starts paying on time. You might also ask if she needs help budgeting her money. I mean, if she’s got a good job her money has to be going somewhere, right? The problem is that it’s not going to the proper places.

I know you think that by being subtle or avoiding the situation you’re being nice, but you’re not.

You’re being passive-aggressive.

You just have to smile and say, “This isn’t going to happen anymore.

You’re going to get your act together, and I’ll help you all I can, but you need to start paying on time or the roommate situation is over.”

Is that tough love? No, it’s just love.

—DAVE DEAR DAVE, My wife and I owe $90,000 on our mortgage, and we have no other debt. We are able to save about $20,000 a year, so we could have the house paid off in just over four years. She likes the idea of having lots of money saved up, but I would love to be completely debtfree. Should we pay off the house or hang on to the savings?

JASON DEAR JASON, Let’s pretend your house is al-

ready paid for in full. Would you borrow on your home so that you had enough cash that your wife liked it? You say you wouldn’t, so what’s the difference? If you had a paid-for house and you wouldn’t borrow on it to have cash laying around to feel better, why wouldn’t you use the cash laying around to pay off the house? It’s the same thing.

The first thing you want to consider is having an emergency fund of three to six months of expenses.

You also need to make sure you’re putting aside 15 percent of your income for retirement. Other than that, if you have enough cash laying around to pay off your home and you don’t, it’s the same thing as having borrowed on your home in order to have cash laying around.

If I’m in your shoes, as soon as the emergency fund is in place — six months of expenses since your wife likes the security factor — and 15 percent is being put away for retirement, I’d take the other money and throw it at the house. Get that thing paid off as fast as you can!

Beginning this month, the district will host free tax preparation services provided by AARP and the Will County Senior Services Center.

Volunteer tax preparers are IRS Tax Law Certified. Each par-

ticipant needs to bring the following: picture ID, proof of social security number, income statements,l expense documents, last year’s federal 1040 and IL1040 returns. All returns will be electronically filed (e-file).
