2018 Great Read celebrates legacy of MLK Multi-library literacy program honors Martin Luther King all February with multi-media events

Bringing communities together not only through literacy but in celebrating diversity, local libraries and community organizations are set to begin, “The Great Read, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. — A Life, A Legacy.”

In a program that crosses several communities, bringing together residents throughout Will County, The Great Read will commemorate the 50th anniversary of Dr. King’s death by focusing on his life and lasting legacy.

The Great Read Kickoff begins at 6 p.m., Feb. 1, at the White Oak Library, Romeoville, 201 Normantown Road with a performance by professional storyteller Linda Gorham. She will introduce listeners to Martin, a young boy growing up in the South, who would one day become the most visible spokesperson and activist of the Civil Rights Movement.

In the spirit of giving, the Great Read committee is asking patrons to bring canned goods or supplies to the kick off and finale events. Donations will benefit Bags of Hope, Morningstar Mission of Joliet, and St. John Food Pantry.

The Great Read started in 2004 as a one-time, roundtable discussion about censorship between the Plainfield Public Library and School District 202, around the Ray Bradbury classic, “Fahrenheit 451.” In 2008, Reading Across Plainfield became The Great Read when new partners from Joliet and Bolingbrook joined the program to encourage broader community participation, better reflect the areas served and emphasize the program’s literary focus.

Its members now include the Plainfield, Joliet, Fountaindale,

Lemont, and White Oak public library systems, and Joliet Junior College.

The White Oak Library in conjunction with the 2018 Great Read community literacy program will honor Dr. King’s life and legacy with a series of programs and special events in February. The next event at the Romeoville branch, History of the Chicago Race Riots with Author Claire Harfield will take place at 7 p.m., February 7. “The Great Read is important because it allows libraries to come together to provide in-depth programming on topics that have impacted our culture and literary heritage,” said Patricia Jarog, Great Read committee member and White Oak Library, Lockport Branch Manager. “This year’s theme examines the indelible mark left by Dr. King, and whether or not we were alive during the Civil Rights Movement, it’s a great time to examine this important time in American history and he man who defined it.”

In addition, area artists of all ages are invited and encouraged to take part in the Great Read Art Contest.

Winners in three age groups from pre-kindergarten to adult will win a $50 Barnes & Noble gift card, and could win additional prizes through their home libraries. The deadline to submit artwork is Feb. 14.

The 2018 Great Read Finale Gala will feature an evening with Maggie Brown, at 6 pm. Feb. 28 at the Joliet Black Road Library. The Great Read Art Contest winners will also be announced and awarded at the finale.

Malibu Bay Park to receive facelift Renovations are needed for 19-year-old playground to bring it up to standards Malibu Bay Park, located near Princeton Avenue and Sunset Point, in Romeville is getting closer to its overhaul. Built in 1999, renovations are needed on the 19-year-old playground to bring it up to standards.

“Romeoville’s numerous parks are a point of pride and we want to be sure they meet both village and safety standards,” said Mayor

John Noak.

The original design, which was approved by the village board in June, consists of improved drainage, new play equipment, pathways, a trellis, and extensive landscape enhancements. The plan also calls for the removal of outdated equipment, non-compliant ramps, and concrete walkways.

Mayor credits success to residents, businesses State of the Village Address highlights steady growth, housing and new additions

Claar gave his annual State of the Village address Jan. 18 at the Bolingbrook Golf Club to a full house sponsored by the Bolingbrook Area Chamber of Commerce.

Bolingbrook’s population is 76,722 and stands to reach capacity at 88,403. Housing starts have begun to shrink, though a resurgence in apartments is apparent with the the high-end renovation of the Promenade Apartments and the creation of The Brooks on Jane Avenue. Housing in Bolingbrook can now range from $90,000 to $1 million.

Though the town approaches potential build out with roughly only another 1,000 acres of open space, development in not stagnant, with businesses reinvesting, rebuilding and expanding in Bolingbrook. Bringing with them steady job creation, at least 20 companies including the likes of Weathertech, G&W Electric, Windy City Wire have brought their corporate headquarters to Bolingbrook.

The top 25 employers alone in Bolingbrook account for 11,382 of the approximate 41,000 in total for the community since 1986 accord-

ing to the village’s presentation.

Naming company leaders who brought their business to Bolingbrook, Claar shared a litany of companies who have continued to expand their base within the community and their success.

Industrial spaces take up approximately 35.2 million square-feet housing businesses such as internationally-known WeatherTech, West Liberty Foods, and Turano Bakery.

In one of the biggest announcements of the village address, Del Webb is coming to Bolingbrook.

Claar said the developer is expected to purchase property on the west side of the golf course.

This Del Webb community will offer 150 single-family homes on 52 acres, and is expected to sell out in four years. The property is restricted to seniors; average home price will be about $325,000; every home will have golf-course access and as part of the deal every resident of Del Webb will have membership to the golf club.

“This will be a nice fit; it’s a great project, so glad to have this here,” said Claar.

Equally compelling is garbage and where to put it. So said, Claar, who quipped it is the hottest issue in the village. Toters or bags is the hot debate.

“We don’t have alleys to put them (toters); it’s not as simplistic as some people think... I see these things in front of garage doors, 247, 365 days a year—I think that’s ugly. Maybe it’s just me,” said Claar who noted the village has has a bag program for years.

However despite his personal view and due to the persistence of those who want toters, the village is looking to allow them.

Initial research by the village shows the standard garbage collection can stay at the same rate of $21 a month; however those who want a toter will pay $2 to $3 more. The village has done a survey which will be posted on the village’s website when more information is available. Claar said it is a complicated process and that the village is working out a plan and will eventually bring it to the village board once details are determined.

In addition, despite a huge shift in the retail landscape, Bolingbrook

has seen a variety of new endeavors come with new restaurants such as Chipotle/MOD Pizza, to be completed in the outlots of Meijer, Pork Chop in the Promenade, and the anticipated possible February opening of Beggars Pizza in the former Branmor’s location. A large part of the community, Amita Health Care continues to grow and build its presence in the medical arena bringing health care to the forefront.

Several road projects are still in

the works though they have been delayed due to the state’s dysfunctional budget issues, said Claar.

However these projects are still in the works, including the overhaul of Weber Road, transforming the section at I 55 to a diverging diamond; an interchange at Route 126; the expansion of Kings Road and improvements to Remington Boulevard.

“We do not have to bond to do anything else in this village. We have public works facilities, we have five fire stations, we have a storm water plant; these are the only roads left and that is going to be done with local gas tax funds. So we are done with our debt, all we have to do is pay it off,” said Claar.

The village also continues to face the issue of the Emerald Ash Borer.

To date the village has removed 9,700 trees, replanted more than 8,700 trees and anticipates more to come.The project will eventually cost the village millions, but is an inevitable dilemma the village continues to wrestle with.

Illinois’ Underground Railroad

BY JAKE GRIFFIN Of the Daily Herald Despite Illinois’ status as a free state, runaway slaves and free blacks did not find the state accommodating in its earliest days.

Slave owners in southern Illinois were allowed to keep their slaves when Illinois joined the union in 1818.

Then, they were permitted to commit newer generations of freed black residents to indentured servitude for decades. Illinois’ early years are also littered with laws subverting black residents’ freedoms, the welcoming of slave catchers and on at least one occasion an attempt to change the state Constitution to allow slavery statewide.

Yet, throughout much of the early 1800s, Illinois served as a path to freedom for fugitive slaves traveling between safe houses as they sought asylum in Canada.

“I think Illinois can be proud of its history on racial justice, not so much at how the government reacted and what the laws were, but many individuals in the central, northern and western parts of the state have a proven history of helping slaves avoid capture,” said Owen Muelder, an author and director of the Underground Railroad Center at Knox College in Galesburg. “Illinois can be proud, for the most part at least, that there were many of its people who were on the right side of history.”

Recognized stops on the Underground Railroad dot the landscape of the state, mainly starting at the convergence of the Mississippi and Illinois rivers at Grafton and continuing between the two waterways to Wisconsin. But just how many slaves found assistance and who was providing it is nearly impossible to know, according to historians. Some conductors never sought acknowledgment of their participation in the Underground Railroad, while others might have received too much credit.

“It’s been a long argument of how organized the Underground Railroad was,” said Dennis Naglich, an archaeologist at the Illinois State Museum. “There can’t be that much public knowledge (back then) or the other side would catch on.”

Only a smattering of outspoken abolitionists openly admitted to assisting fugitive slaves, risking legal action, ostracizing or death because of their defiance of federal and state laws.

“But keep in mind, many of these slaves escaped by their sheer wit and guile, and their own determination,” Muelder said. “While they might have gotten some help, much of the time they would have been traveling on their own and a lot of it was just chance.”

Perhaps the most famous Underground Railroad stop in Illinois is in Princeton, a few miles northwest of where the Illinois River takes a sharp downstream turn south from the east.

Owen Lovejoy was a preacher whose older brother Elijah was murdered in 1837 by a proslavery mob that was angered by the elder Lovejoy’s abolitionist views printed in an Alton newspaper he ran. Owen Lovejoy moved to Princeton following his brother’s murder and made ending slavery his calling.

“He was an unabashed abolitionist,” said Lois Peterson, a docent at the Owen Lovejoy House in Princeton, a National Park Service landmark. “People left his church because of

his strong beliefs.”

Lovejoy made no secret that his home was a haven for fugitive slaves, even after being arrested on charges of the crime in 1843. After his election to Congress, his 1859 speech denouncing slavery made national headlines when he declared he “aids every fugitive that comes to his door and asks it. Proclaim it then from the housetops. Write it on every leaf that trembles in the forest, make it blaze from the sun at high noon,” according to the National Park Service’s website.

Towns like Galesburg and Geneseo were known for their collective anti-slavery views, historians said. When slave catchers would ride into town looking for runaways, many of the towns’ men would gather together and escort the slave catchers out of town, Muelder said.

“They also used imaginative ruses to trick slave trackers,” Muelder said. “They’d send a carriage off from a barn in one direction to lead the trackers away so they could send the slaves off in the opposite direction a few minutes later.”

In northern Illinois, Graue Mill in Oak Brook was often used to house fugitive slaves, as was Blanchard Hall at Wheaton College. Lake County had several Underground Railroad stops including the Mother Rudd Home in Gurnee and the Kuhn Cabin site in Newport Township.

Lake County Forest Preserve historian and museum curator Diana Dretske said the county was an important way station for slaves fleeing to Canada via the Great Lakes, but it was made tougher because of the state’s notorious Black Laws.

“Most people aren’t very aware of Illinois’ history and how these laws were intended to control and regulate the movement and amount of the state’s black population,” Dretske said.

Even Abraham Lincoln — the Great Emancipator — once defended a Kentucky slave owner in Illinois over the freedom of a black family staying at the slave owner’s Illinois estate near Oakland. He had taken the case over the objection of an abolitionist friend, Dr. Hiram Rutherford, who’d helped the family escape from the slave owner. Lincoln lost the case, and apparently lost a friend, too.

“Dr. Rutherford was very upset that Lincoln took the case and wrote to him expressing his disappointment saying he thought they were ‘like-minded’ on the issue of slavery,” said Kathy Pardi, overseer of the history museum that is now Rutherford’s home in Oakland.

There is no record of the two friends speaking or corresponding ever again.

Funding still available for LIHEAP assistance The Will County Center for Community Concerns (WCCCC), as administrator of the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is pleased to announce that funds are still available to assist income-eligible households with their winter utility bills.

The program is available to all income eligible Will County households. Households must be at or below 150 percent of the federal poverty level to receive a benefit from the LIHEAP Program. Benefits are paid directly to utilities on behalf of eligible households. The exception is households whose heating costs are included in their rent.

Applicants are required to bring ALL documents necessary to start the application process.

Joliet’s Bercich on call for ‘Miracle’ finish

While most Chicago-area football fans knew the now famous NFC Semifinal game between Minnesota and New Orleans January 14 had a local flare with Vikings’ head coach being a Lockport Township graduate and Saints’ coach Sean Payton an alum of Naperville Central.

What many may not have known is that there was another local angle in the game now dubbed as the ‘Minneapolis Miracle’ was Pete Bercich, a Joliet native and Providence Catholic graduate, who is now the game day analyst aside play-by-play broadcaster Paul Allen.

Unfortunately, after a 38-7 loss to the Eagles in the NFC Championship game, Bercich will not get to make more history and call the first ever Super Bowl with a team playing in its home stadium. Instead, he and the Vikings will welcome the Eagles and Patriots to Minnesota for the game.

Bercich has been part of the Viking family since he was drafted in the seventh round of the 1994 NFL draft out of Notre Dame. He spent five seasons as a linebacker for the Vikings until he retired in 2000, He then spent another five years as a Vikings’ defensive assistant coach before taking over the color commentator duties in 2007.

His long tenure in Minneapolis

made the Case Keenum to Stefon Diggs 61-yard touchdown on the final play of the game to beat the Saints 29-24 in the NFC semifinal made it more memorable – but so did his history growing up a Bear fan in Joliet.

“To properly explain that, you have to go through history, I grew up, obviously, a Bears fan and I know what it was like in 1985 to have your team get it done and it stays with you. That year, you just knew the Bears were going to win and it was fantastic,” Bercich said.

“I came here in 1994 as a rookie and the people here, for those that remember, have been to the Super Bowl four times and lost each one.

“As a player, I played on the 1998 team NFC championship game that we lost (to Atlanta, 3027 in overtime), I was on the field in 2000 when we got beat 41-0 (to the New York Giants), I was in the booth in 2009 when we lost to the Saints (31-28 in overtime). Two years ago, we miss a chip shot field goal to get into the playoffs, I was coaching in 2003 when the Cardinals beat us on the last play of the game and knocked us out of the playoffs – the heartbreak has been how things have gone here.”

More heartbreak was what Bercich was mentally preparing for after the Saints’ Will Lutz kicked a go-ahead 43-yard-field goal with 29 seconds left and more so when the Vikings were penalized 5-yards on the first play of the final series with 25 seconds remaining.

Four plays later, Diggs was running down the Minnesota sideline for the game-winning touchdown.

“Watching that last drive and you get a false start and in the back of my mind, I am thinking, I will have 30 seconds or a minute to sum up the season and I was going through that in my head and then it happened,” Bercich said.

“So, the emotion part of it was a combination of all of that happening in a split second because our

booth is right there on the 25-yard line on the Vikings’ sideline, so it happened right there in front of us.

“I have been part of the organization for 23 seasons and I am lucky to be able to do what I do and I am lucky to be able to bring the games to the fans. As an analyst, your job is to tell the people what is going on and you don’t always get the chance to come unhinged emotionally. It was great

to just let it all loose – it felt pretty damn good, I can tell you that.”

It wasn’t only fans in Minnesota cheering for the Vikings as a lot Chicagoland fans adopted the Vikings in the playoffs – some because they represent the NFC Central and some because of Zimmer, who was a three-sport star at Lockport, playing football for his late father Bill Zimmer, who SEE BERCICH PAGE 9

Raiders hold off pair of worthy opponents

It started for the Raiders on Martin Luther King Day at Fenwick’s cozy gym, in the opening game of the City-Suburban Shootout, against the defending Class 3A state champions from Morgan Park.

It ended for the Raiders, in “The Old Barn” at Joliet Central, against the 14-2 Steelmen, under their great head coach, Lawrence Thompson, Jr., on Tuesday, January 16.

“When you play a Larry Thompson-coached team, it’s like having a root canal,” Bolingbrook head coach Rob

Brost said. “No I am not looking forward to Tuesday night,” when asked by this reporter, shortly after the Raiders’ 75-71 win over Morgan Park, on Monday.

In the battle between the top two schools in the Voyager Media Publications Terrific Ten, No. 2 Joliet Central (14-3), clung to a 49-47 lead over the top-

ranked Raiders, with 5:11 left in an epic battle.

As he had done on numerous occasions this season, Bolingbrook head coach Rob Brost, flipped the switch and the vaunted Raider defense came to life. Four minutes later, sparked by six Bolingbrook steals, the Raiders went on an 13-0 run

and led 60-49 with 1:17 left. The Raiders would turn the befuddled Steelmen over four more times and roll to a 65-53 win.

With 4:11 left Raider junior guard Tyler Cochran’s bucket tied the game at 49. Raider junior guard Joseph Yesufu (nine points, five steals), picked up his fifth steal of the game and put the Raiders up 50 -49, after making one of two free throw with 3:37 left.

Cochran (21 points, nine rebounds, two steals) was at it again. Cochran stole the ball, fired a dart to junior Demari Grant ( two points, four steals, four rebounds, three assists) who fired a no-look pass to teammate junior Jordan Myrick (six points, two steals), for a layup and a 52-49 Raider lead.

A Grant steal and a Myrick bucket 34 seconds later , would give the Raiders a 54-49 lead.

Myrick would return the favor by stealing the ball and feeding his buddy Demari Grant, for his only two points of the game.

“Some nights I can go for 20,” Grant said. “Tonight, I played solid defense and handled my point guard role well.”

Myrick committed larceny again and fed Monday’s Raider hero, 6-foot-8 Joey Saracco (six points, two rebounds}, for another layup and a 58-49 lead.

Cochran would steal and score to complete the 13-0 Raider run with 1:17 left.

“We went out and did as we always do,” Cochran said. “We had another great game-plan and went out and executed it,” “Early on we weren’t playing any defense,” Myrick said. “In the last five minutes, we turned it on and played great defense and got the win.”

Joliet Central led 14-12 after one quarter. Bolingbrook went on a 7-0 run sparked by their defense, to take a 28-19 lead with three minutes in the half and led 32-27 at the break.

Behind senior Ryan Saunders (16 points, 11 rebounds, three blocked shots, two assists) and senior Johnny Fuller (17 points, four rebounds), the Steelmen pulled to within two at 41-39 after three quarters.

“I have had many people like (former Providence coaches) Matt Senffner and Butch Markelz and a couple of other guys from Providence that knew Mike’s Dad and Butch Markelz actually worked with him at Lockport, so there is a hometown connection there, no question.”

The NFL connection to the Joliet area is not the first this football season as 2018 started with Providence graduate Miles Boykin’s amazing catch gave Notre Dame a 21-17 Citrus Bowl win over LSU. Bercich said locals on the big stage in football is more than just happenstance.

“I think it is more than just coincidence that all of us from that area are involved,” he said. “I have been around the field a long time and I coach high school football now and I look back at the Joliet area and it is just a fabulous sports area and it has produced so many great players and coaches. And I will be willing to bet you Joliet has produced more game day analysts for pro football than any other town, because you have Tom Thayer with the Bears. I honestly think it has to do with how much people in that area who just love the game and how we were coached and the people that coached us and how important football was to everyone when I was growing up.”

“You look at the Vikings and the Eagles and they are the same in a lot of respects. They are two teams you would like to root for,” he said.

“Everyone loves an underdog.

There is no big name, no one that is always in the camera and that is why we have never been a media favorite and this is a true team effort and it resonates with people.

And I don’t say this flippantly, but it resonates with the people in Chicago who know a lot more about football than most.”

And while the Vikings fell one game short this season, a season that was still a success after losing starting quarterback Sam Bradford in week one of the season and rookie starting running back Dalvin Cook in week three.

Bercich has watched a lot of heartbreak in Minnesota, but remembers the words from one legendary Viking figure.

“When I was playing, Dennis Green was my coach and God rest his soul, he was one of my favorite people of all time. He would always say, ‘just keep knocking on the door, keep knocking on the door and when it’s your year, it’s your year.’ Sometimes things don’t go your way and unfortunately for us, it has been that way for a long time,” he said. “When people say never give up, it’s not just a cliché.

There is a reason for it, a reason behind it.”

“On Monday, we beat one of the best teams in the state in Morgan Park,” Brost said. “It was an emotional game for us and we struggled offensively tonight. Our guard play led by Tyler Cochran, Demari Grant, Joseph Yesufu and Jordan Myrick, played outstanding for us. Demari got hurt early in the game and came back and played a great fourth quarter. We will take tomorrow off and then get ready for Homewood-Flossmoor (9-4, 3-0) at our place on Friday.

A game earlier, in the CitySuburban Shootout at Fenwick, the Raiders defeated the defending Class 3A state champions Morgan Park 75-71, without

standout junior point guard Kaleb Thornton.

Playing almost a perfect game, the Raiders buried the Mustangs, with a devastating inside game, led by 6-foot-8 senior Joey Saracco. Leading 58-40 after three quarters, it looked like the Raiders were going to send the defending state champs, back to the South Side, with a humiliating defeat.

“As well as we were playing, we knew Morgan Park was going to come back,” Brost said.

Come back indeed! Under a devastating pressure defense and the long-range marksmanship from Mustang sophomore Adam Miller (30 pts, eight three’s) the Mustangs cut the Raider lead to 72-68 with 36 seconds left.

free throws to nail down the 7571 victory, on MLK Day. Cochran scored 15 points, hauled down 10 rebounds and handed out six assists.

“I missed a few too many free-throws down the stretch,” Cochran said, “We all played with a lot of energy today and boxed-out and rebounded today, for the big win.”

Saracco, who transferred to Bolingbrook from Plainfield Central, had his best game as a Raider. 17 points, 7 rebounds and six blocked shots drove the CPS power nuts. In the second quarter, Cochran handed out three dimes to the former Wildcat for three consecutive buckets to give the Raiders a 22-12 lead.

“We have been a little shaky without Kaleb Thornton,” Saracco said, “We came out and showed everyone today, what we can really do. Whatever I have to do. Play hot and score or hit the open man. I will do. Yes sir! Even taking a big charge.”

Their tremendous run at us, doesn’t take away anything from our victory. The victory was double-sweet for not having Kaleb, who it looks like we won’t get him back, for four-six weeks.”

15-year fixed mortgage is only debt worth getting DEAR DAVE, Do you have a guideline ratio for mortgage debt to income?

LEVON DEAR LEVON, When it comes to buying a home, I always tell people to get a 15-year, fixed rate mortgage, with monthly payments that are no more than 25 percent of their take home pay. This type of mortgage is the only debt I don’t beat up people for having. Still, I urge folks to pay off these loans in less than 15 years.

The average person following my plan pays off this type of loan in about seven or eight years.

That’s a pretty big deal in terms of your financial security. And paying extra on your mortgage doesn’t have to be a strain. You can start by simply rounding up your payments. If the payment is $770, make it $800 instead, and apply the extra to the principal balance. If you want to get more intense, you could make an extra house payment each quarter, or go the route of bi-weekly pay-

ments. To do this, simply make half a monthly payment every two weeks. By the end of the year you’ll have made 13 payments instead of 12. This will knock years off the length of your loan.

Remember, your income is your largest wealth-building tool.

It’s so much easier to save, invest, and give when all your money isn’t flying out the door to make payments!

DON DEAR DON, No, I do not. I also don’t recommend oil or corn futures. All of these are examples of commodities, and the commodities market is extremely volatile. In addition to the market being wildly volatile, the prices on commodities isn’t based on actual production.

It’s based largely on a supply and demand curve. If there’s a short-

age on one of them, the price shoots up.

For example, when you’re talking about gold and silver, there’s more demand than supply when the economy is bad. In this kind of scenario, people are fearful and lots of them run to buy gold.

This drives up the price to unrealistically high levels.

Again, the price on a commodity isn’t based on anything other than fear or greed, and a supply and demand curve. The prices aren’t based on an actual production of income, like it is with stocks or real estate. I don’t buy commodities at all, especially gold and silver. I don’t recommend you buy them, either.
