New Romeoville Metra station to open February 5 Heritage Corridor Line will run on weekdays between Joliet and Chicago Union Station

No small feat, service to the new Romeoville Station on Metra’s Heritage Corridor Line is set to begin on Feb. 5, giving Romeoville residents a direct connection to downtown Chicago.

Years in the works, it took cooperation on every level from local, state, and federal agencies and two international companies to make the new station, near the intersection of 135th and New Avenue, to happen.

“While the project may not be the biggest, it is very significant in its long-term impact,” said Romeoville Mayor John Noak.

According to Metra, it will be the first new stop on the Heritage Corridor since Metra’s creation in 1984 and the first new stop on any Chicago area Metra line since 2011.

“I just have to thank all the staff, Congressman Lipinski, Citgo and Canadian National for all coming together to make this a reality,” said Noak.

The new station initiative began in 2008, when one of Romeoville’s largest industrial residents, Citgo Petroleum Company, was about to expand and build a new plant. At the time, the village and the company struck a deal. In exchange for variances that allowed for an additional parking lot to be constructed across from the plant on 135th Street, Citgo offered to lease eight acres of land to the village for a long-sought Metra station.

The project is estimated at $4.9 million dollars with more than $3.9 million of the funding through CMAP’s Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement (CMAQ) Grant. The Village of Romeoville was also fortunate to receive a supplemental grant from the Illinois Transportation

Noak said the design of the Metra station took into consideration the look of village’s design standards, using the same elements as those used in Uptown Square. In addition, while the station will offer 123 parking spaces currently, if need warrants, expansion is possible.

The new station’s address is 899 E. Romeoville Road and the Heritage Corridor Line will run on weekdays between Joliet and Chicago Union Station.

Annual ($250) or semiannual ($125) reserved permit parking will be limited to 23 permits, with the remainder of the spaces open to daily parking for a $1 fee.

Permits went on sale Jan. 15 for Romeoville residents only and Jan. 22 for the general public. Permits will only be sold online. For more information on obtaining a permit, visit www.romeoville.org.

Daily fee parking payments will be managed for the village by Passport Parking. A pay station that accepts both cash (exact change only) and credit cards will be located at the station. A One-Way Ticket to Chicago will cost $7.25, while a 10-Ride Ticket will cost $69 and a Monthly Pass will cost $210.25. New schedules for the Heritage Corridor are available online and will be available at Chicago Union Station Jan. 25.

Weber Road store closings hitting Romeoville Target and now Sam’s Club shutting doors

Romeoville will see the loss of two big box retailers with announcements of their closings in as little as two months of each other, though officials say the village can weather the hit.

It was a shock to the community, taking not only Romeoville, but locations nationwide by surprise when Wal-Mart, parent company of Sam’s Club issued a release Jan. 11 that it was closing its doors at 63 locations, including 460 S. Weber Road, as well as stores in Naperville, Batavia, Matteson and Moline.

“This came as a surprise to us as Sam’s has demonstrated a strong sales increase each year since opening,” said Steve Gulden, Romeoville village manager.

Adding insult to injury, this latest news falls on the heels of Target’s announced closing of its store at Airport and Weber roads. Sam’s Club is slated to officially close Jan. 26 and Target will shut its doors Feb. 3.

Romeoville Mayor John Noak contends that it appears the face of big box retailers is evolving and changing the landscape for purely strategic reasons, noting that the

village has tracked sales for the stores along the Weber Road corridor that have seen a yearly sales increase since opened.

“We’ve done our reports and we find no rhyme or reason indicative of these decisions; it is clearly a strategic decision on their part to be more competitive and has nothing to do with the profitability and location here,” said Noak.

Though just as frustrated at the closings as its residents, Noak said the village is financially sound enough to take the loss in sales, estimated to be in the hundreds of thousands range, though unclear as to what the final impact will be until mid-year. However, it is believed that if the new Toyota dealership, set to open later this year, performs as it should, those

sales would more than make up for the loss. In addition, he noted that some of those sales will be reabsorbed into other stores like Wal-Mart, Aldi, Jewel, and Blain’s Farm and Fleet.

“Weber Road is not overbuilt, we are just not use to such turnover. But let’s be honest, how many stores have we seen continually change in other communities,” said Noak. “Big box is shrinking and we are beginning to see smaller and service-based stores and more entertainment.”

Looming large is the thought of standing vacant buildings and a time frame for what will come to replace the retailers.

Admittedly not what residents want to hear, Noak said it is a game of wait and see, as these are both

private companies who are responsible for selling the buildings and the properties aren’t listed for sale yet.

He did say these two stores do not compare to the situation with the former Dominick’s store that has been sitting vacant for years due to the fact that it is a leased building owned by Albertsons who hasn’t wanted to put in a tenant.

“This is a different situation, these are private companies that own the buildings outright and can sell it to whomever they want,” said Noak. “The village has been in communication since day one and our role is to make sure we can do anything needed to market and incentivize the locations. We can work to make this for re-use, there is a lot to offer in this corridor. ”

Noak points to the fact that there is still significant activity on the corridor with the coming of a new gas station, the Toyota dealership, Dog Haus, the recent Aldi expansion and expected announcements for smaller outlots along Weber Road.

What could possibly replace the two locations is up for speculation, but the large size, at more than 130,000 square feet, has to be considered. Though Sam’s Club said some of its locations would be turned into e-commerce sites, the likelihood of that happening in Romeoville is slim considering a Wal-Mart SuperCenter sits next door.

Odds are the buildings would most likely be subdivided, suggested Noak. To put things in perspective, grocery stores such as Jewel, is 60,000 square feet in comparison.

And for residents, wishing for a Mariano’s or Trader Joes---it’s not likely to happen as Mariano’s announced it is no longer opening any more stores and size rules out Trader Joe’s, whose average size is about 15,000 square feet.

However, the bottom line, says Noak, is that “we have a strong location and there is no doubt that an owner or developer will take over these properties.”

Sam’s Club and Target will be working with their employees on relocation. In addition, any displaced employees can contact the Workforce Development Services of Will County at 815-727-4444 for employment assistance.

The 2018 Great Read community literacy program will honor Dr. King’s life and legacy with a series of programs and special events in February.

The Great Read is a consortium of public and private organizations promoting literacy, reading, conversation, and community in Plainfield and surrounding southwest suburban partner com-

munities since 2004.

Admission is free Renowned professional storyteller Linda Gorham will introduce listeners to “Martin,” a young boy growing up in the South, who would one day become the most visible spokesperson of the Civil Rights Movement.

Sears made modern retail

BY ERIC PETERSON OF THE DAILY HERALD As the home of Sears since the late 19th century, Illinois is the birthplace of modern retail.

Even today’s colossus, Amazon, can trace the roots of its business model to Sears’ original mail-order business that popularized the notion of buying products at home without first seeing and touching them in person.

“There were some small mailorder companies before, but Sears became the largest, the most successful, the giant,” said Libby Mahoney, senior curator of the Chicago History Museum.

And if it seems strange that such a retailer could grow strong enough to make its headquarters the tallest building in the world as Sears did in Chicago in 1973, consider today’s intense competition among cities to house Amazon’s second headquarters, she said.

It was Chicago’s central position in the nation’s railroad and highway networks that made it a better place for Richard Sears to operate the mail-order watch company he’d started in Minneapolis the previous year, 1886.

In Chicago, Sears partnered with watchmaker Alvah C. Roebuck, leading to the longtime name of the firm being Sears, Roebuck and Co. Its first catalog featuring only watches and jewelry was published in 1888, while its first large catalog of general merchandise came along in 1896. Sears wooed customers with promises of savings gained by eliminating the middleman. It popularized the money-back guarantee to build trust with the consumer, Mahoney said.

The gradual diversification of the company’s products seemed to know no bounds, perhaps best illustrated by the advent of Sears Modern Homes. Between 1908 and 1940, Sears sold about 75,000 such homes around the country by mail-order. Many of the homes, which came in 447 different designs, exist today.

Such a company at that time was largely dependent on the U.S. Post Office for its success and reliability, Mahoney said.

But eventually, Sears, Roebuck’s original mail-order business began to be threatened by the greater urbanization of the country after World War I. The solution — championed by then-vice president and future company President Robert E. Wood — was the introduction of brickand-mortar stores in the 1920s.

Many other innovations followed under Wood’s guidance, including getting into the insurance business during the Great Depression with the creation of Allstate Insurance. Like several other Sears-created brands, Allstate eventually would be spun off as an independent company, but not until 1993.

Although Sears has never been a manufacturer, its brands such as Craftsman tools, Kenmore appliances and DieHard batteries helped build the company’s reputation.

Even as the biggest of all, Sears didn’t take customer loyalty for granted, Mahoney said.

“They were really trying to improve the appearance of their products and make them stylish in the 1930s,” Mahoney said. “I think they were really savvy merchants.”

The nation’s economic recovery after World War II was what enabled such imitators as Kmart, Target and Kohl’s,

but probably not until the 1970s or 1980s did they start to have a significant impact on Sears’ business, Mahoney said.

Even in the mail-order years, the Chicago-based Montgomery Ward was the country’s distant second-place retailer, despite having started earlier.

“Sears always seemed to have the upper hand,” Mahoney said. Nevertheless, Montgomery Ward’s successfully carved a niche for itself by deliberately selling different products than Sears did, she added.

For the past 25 years, Sears has made its home at the 780-acre Prairie Stone Business Park it created on the west side of Hoffman Estates. Though the now-vanished Poplar Creek Music Theater was probably the first name that put Hoffman Estates on the regional map, Sears was an even bigger one, Mayor Bill McLeod said.

“When it was announced, it was a really big deal,” McLeod said. “Sears was an iconic retailer. It obviously brought a lot of attention to the village. Sears made a big difference.”

Among the other developments that have located around it are the Sears Centre Arena — now home to the NBA G League’s Windy City Bulls — and the Chicago region’s 185,000-square-foot Cabela’s store.

The westward expansion of the village’s commercial presence was followed by equivalent residential growth.

“There was very little housing on the west side of the village before Sears came,” McLeod said.

Though headlines today often chronicle the company’s present struggles, reminders of Sears’ heyday are all around. These include the call letters of Chicago radio station WLS — which stands for “World’s Largest Store” for the four years Sears owned the station in the 1920s — and the name of Schaumburg’s massive Woodfield Mall, which honors both Robert Wood and iconic Chicago merchant Marshall Field.

But for a business based in the greater Chicago area for more than 130 years, Sears’ longevity and influence are historic, Mahoney said.

“They’ve hung on longer than the stockyards,” she laughed.

Bolingbrook resident honors MLK Day Alyssia Benford, Republican candidate for state representative and a Bolingbrook resident, took action to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Day and the 110th anniversary of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.

“Dr. King was an advocate of non-violent activism and a Civil Rights leader. He often spoke about kindness and compassion in the struggle to end racial discrimination in the United States. While Dr. King never held public office, he ensured his voice was heard by speaking up regarding injustices.” said Benford. King was assassinated in 1968. The Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, is also known as MLK Day or Civil Rights Day. In recent years, it has become known as a “Day of Service,” encouraging Americans to volunteer and help others.

Benford said, “There is no better way to honor Dr. King�s legacy then by showing compassion and helping others in need.”

Benford, a DuPage Township Trustee and member of the Bolingbrook Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, has helped organize the chapter�s day of service at the DuPage Township Food Pantry for the past four years. The chapter and other members of the community volunteered

at the food pantry on MLK Day. In 2017, the chapter donated more than 2,000 food items and financial support to the DuPage Township Food Pantry, which serves more than 1,000 families each month. This day of service is special for the members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated because it is also the sorority�s 110th year anniversary.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, was founded on January 15, 1908 on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C. The sorority is the oldest African American female-founded sorority in the United States. The organization currently has over 300,000 members worldwide and they are consistently at the forefront of advocacy and justice.

“I am honored to belong to a sisterhood that has members such as Coretta Scott King, Rosa Parks, Maya Angelou and Mae Jemison.

The sorority is currently focused on educational enrichment, health promotion, family strengthening environmental ownership and global impact.” said Benford.

Benford recently attended the 110th Founder�s Day Celebration in Washington, D.C. Under the leadership of their International President, Dr. Dorothy Buckhanan Wilson, the sorority gave $1 million to the Smithsonian Museum of African American History and Culture and $250,000 to Howard University during the anniversary celebration.

After taking its lumps with young players, Bolingbrook is 14-2 and looking at a state push

For the past few years, the Bolingbrook girls basketball team has been building its program with hopes to get back where it was when the Raiders were winning four state championships in six years.

To do this, coach Chris Smith has featured young, talented players and has worked on building the winning culture that was once there.

This season has been a big step forward for Bolingbrook as it has posted a 14-2 record to open the season, with its only losses coming to a tough Benet Academy team and Fergurson out of Miami, Fla. Most recently, the Raiders defeated Iowa City West 61-58 in Iowa on Martin Luther King day and beat Homewood-Flossmoor 56-54. The Vikings are still led by

Tony Smith, who was the architect of the Bolingbrook championships in the early-to-mid 2000s.

“You hope to build-up over the years to get to a point where you can say the accumulation all comes together and that is what we are waiting on now. We are waiting on this group to put it all together and then can turn that corner and be a state caliber team,” said Bolingbrook coach Chris Smith. “We lost to some good teams. What we have to show is that we can play against zone defense and I in our losses this year, that is what has come to haunt us.”

Chris Smith said the zone defense has been that one Achilles Heel for the Raiders.

No. 11 Flyers earn first win of 2018 The 11th ranked Lewis University Flyer men’s volleyball team swept past George Mason (28-26, 25-18, 25-14) to pick up its first win of the 2018 season on Saturday evening at Neil Carey Arena. Julian Moses (Atlanta, GA/Atlanta International School) led the way for the Flyers (1-3) with 10 kills in the match while Ryan Coenen (Franklin, WI/Franklin) added nine kills.

Lewis finished the match with a hitting percentage of .469 (36 kills, 6 errors, 64 attempts) and had 9.5 total blocks.

Christian Malias had a matchhigh 11 kills to lead the Patriots.

GMU had an attack percentage of .188 (31 kills, 18 errors, 69 attempts).

“Mason came out hard that first game and we got knocked back a little bit then our guys settled in,” men’s volleyball head coach Dan Friend said. “We got some catalyst plays from Julian

(Moses), Danny Maurer (Oviedo, FL/Hagerty) and TJ (Murray) which put us in a position to take the lead and eventually win 28-26 which was awesome.

“We went into games two and three and made a few small adjustments and I thought we served the ball better in those two games which really opened up those two games for us.”

The Flyers trailed by five on two different occasions in the opening set but were able to climb back into it thanks to an 8-4 run to cut the lead 23-22 on a service ace from Ryan Coenen (Franklin, WI/Franklin). Sam Greenslade gave the Patriots a 24-22 lead with a kill and set point but Lewis scored three straight points to take a 25-24 lead.

George Mason extended the match on a service error but Moses gave the Flyers the lead right back with a kill. Malias

answered Moses kill with one of his own to even the set at 26.

Moses responded with a kill to give Lewis its third set point and then Coenen and Danny Maurer (Oviedo, FL/Hagerty) teamed up to stuff Hayden Wagner for the set winner.

The Flyers led by as many as eight points in the second set but the Patriots responded with a 6-2 run to cut the lead to 2117 after a kill from Malias and forced a Lewis timeout. The Flyers responded out of the timeout scoring four of the last five points to win the set 25-18.

George Mason took the early lead in the third set but Lewis answered back with an 8-2 run to take a lead it wouldn’t relinquish. The Flyers led by as many as 11 points in the final set. Coenen and Mitch Perinar (Channahon, IL/Minooka) had three kills each to lead Lewis in that final set.

The Flyers continue their nine match homestand next Friday hosting Saint Francis (Pa.) in a 7 p.m. match at Neil Carey Arena.

Friday night’s match will be autograph night.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL The Lewis University women’s basketball team rolled to its seventh straight win on Monday with an 87-51 victory at Wisconsin-Parkside.

Jessica Kelliher (Waukesha, Wis./ Waukesha North) led the way with 24 points while Chrissi Ekhomu (Bolingbrook, Ill./Joliet Catholic) added 17 points.

“It was a collective team effort,” Ekhomu said. “We started off slow and then we picked up the energy and defensive and that’s what’s carried us on this winning streak.”

Lewis (14-4, 7-1 GLVC) used a 16-3 run over the final 5:38 of the opening quarter to extend a three-point lead to 16 points.

Ekhomu had five points in that run while Kelliher added four.

Rachel Hinders (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston), Tierney Lockett (Richton Park, Ill./Rich South) and Kayla Brewer (Milwaukee, Wis./Milwaukee School of Languages) had two points apiece.

Parkside (6-12, 2-4 GLVC) opened the quarter on an 8-0 run but the Flyers responded with a 15-6 run to extend the lead to 17 on a free throw from Kelliher with 2:12 left in the second quarter. The lead ballooned to 21 points but the Rangers scored the final five points of the half to trim the lead to 16 at halftime.

“That was our main focus in the halftime talk,” Kelliher said.

“We knew we didn’t play our best defense and we decided to lock down in third quarter and held them to just 21 points in the second half.”

Lewis shot 58 percent (18-for31) from the floor, went 5-of-9 from three and outrebounded Parkside 28-9. Kelliher and Ekhomu had 13 points each in the opening half.

The Flyers struggled shooting the ball in the third quarter making only 6-of-19 attempts from the floor and were 1-for-8 from the three-point line but was able to extend their lead by go-

ing 9-of-9 at the foul line. Lewis outscored the Rangers 22-10 in the quarter to take a 28-point lead into the final stanza.

The Flyers got hot again in the fourth quarter making 8-of-17 shots including a pair of three’s as they dominated the final stanza outscoring Parkside 1911.

Lewis finished the game shooting 48 percent (32-for-67) from the floor, was 8-of-20 from the three-point line and shot 65 percent (15-for-23) from the charity stripe. It outrebounded the Rangers 56-to-28 and had 18 assists in the contest.

The Flyers return home on Thursday night to take on Rockhurst in a 5:30 p.m. contest at Neil Carey Arena. Thursday night’s contest will be the Christian Brothers Bash.

MEN’S BASKETBALL The Lewis University men’s basketball team snapped a three game skid with a 66-58 win at Wisconsin-Parkside on Monday evening. Cristen Wilson (Cleveland, Ohio/John Hay) led three Flyers (8-10, 3-5) in double figures with 17 points while Delaney Blaylock (Wyoming, Mich./Godwin Heights) added 14 and Jake Reinhart (Bloomington, Ill./Central Catholic) finished with 12.

“This was a good win for us on the road against a team that just beat Bellarmine,” men’s basketball head coach Scott Trost said.

“They were playing with a lot of confidence and we were coming off two tough games.

“I was proud of our effort. I thought we competed, it wasn’t always pretty but we got great play from Marco (Pettinato) who gave us a spark. I thought Delaney (Blaylock) hit some big shots. Certainly a good team win for us.”

Lewis fell behind 7-2 to begin the game and still trailed 14-7 six minutes into the game but an 8-0 run gave the Flyers a 1514 lead. The players know the past only made them better for this season.

“These last two years, we had a lot of talent on our team and we struggled with like overall with our record and stuff, but this the afterlife and can push and and possibly go downstate,” said senior Gabby Smith.

One thing Chris Smith likes about the rest of the schedule is that the Raiders will play on a more consistent basis.

“We are in that stretch now where we play some more competitive games and we get to play on a regular basis where up to this

Cache Museum, 501 E. Romeo Road (135th Street), Romeoville. Experience history up close and personal! On the first Sunday of each month, you may find cooks, seamstresses, voyageurs, soldiers or craftsmen sharing their talents. The Isle a la Cache Brigade is a volunteer group of re-enactors presenting a sample of the 18th-century fur trading life. New this year are themed demonstrations for the months of February and March!
