Fountaindale brings Hamilton to village Institute brings Alexander Hamilton to Fountaindale Public Library District in traveling exhibition

Bolingbrook residents don’t necessarily have to miss out if they didn’t land tickets to the latest Broadway hit.

The Fountaindale Public Library is making it easier for the community to understand the late phenomenon of Alexander Hamilton. Most have heard of the smash Broadway musical and he is on the $10 bill.

But what do you really know about Alexander Hamilton?

According to Fountaindale, The Gilder Lehrman Institute offers traveling panel exhibitions for display at schools, libraries and other sites in the continental United States.

“When we learned “Hamilton” the musical would be touring in Chicago, our programmers reached out to the Gilder Lehrman Institute for a loan of their traveling ‘Alexander Hamilton: The Man Who Made Modern America’ exhibit,” said Debra Dudek, Adult & Teen Services Manager.

“Our patrons have expressed a

huge interest in both the “Hamilton” musical and Alexander Hamilton biography by Ron Chernow, and our library is pleased to host a fantastic temporary exhibit for area residents to enjoy free of charge. ‘Alexander Hamilton: The Man Who Made Modern America’ is a great way to learn more about this fascinating and often forgotten founding father, who is still acquiring fans and detractors two centuries later.”

The exhibition, funded in part through a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities and based upon the New-York Historical Society exhibition of the same name, examines Hamilton’s important role in the Revolutionary War and Founding period.

More than any other founder, Hamilton foresaw the way we live now. In his Federalist Papers he

advocated ratification of the Constitution, as treasury secretary, he oversaw the adoption of a national currency, and as an economist, he recognized the importance of trade and commerce in building a strong nation.

Never one to shrink from a fight, political or otherwise, Hamilton was killed at the age of 47 in a duel with Vice President Aaron Burr.

“Americans of the 21st century may admire Hamilton more than any generation since the founders themselves,” said James G. Basker, President of the Gilder Lehrman Institute. “So much about him is attractive to us. He was an immigrant from the Caribbean, a disadvantaged orphan who became a war hero, a self-made man who rose to become a framer of the Constitution and architect of the American financial system.”

Solar power planned 5 Valley View schools Predicted $600K in annual revenue & net savings for district over 25 years

Valley View School District 365U is set to become a leader in Illinois schools; using solar roof panels

that are not only environmentally sound, but expected to earn the district savings and extra cash flow over time.

The district estimates with the use of energy rebates and annual savings, within the next ten years, it stands to rake in $600,000 in an-

nual revenue and a net savings to the district, over 25 years, of approximately $10 million by using solar panels on its roofs.

Last summer the district replaced 20-year-old roofs that were showing signs of wear and tear at five schools, B. J. Ward, Jamie McGee and Irene King elementary schools, and Humphrey and Jane Addams middle schools.

In addition to replacing the roof membranes at these five schools, the district also explored methods of energy conservation, and the possible use of solar panels.

For the past six years the district has been embracing energy efficiency in all its project through the Comprehensive Energy and Environmental Management Initiative.

In keeping with those energy conservation practices, and after further evaluation, the board approved on Jan. 9, the installation of a solar panel system compatible with the roof replacement projects.

The initial cost is estimated at approximately $5.2 million. Funding for the project will be incorporated into the budget through a financing agreement. However, the district expects a 100 percent payback; plus additional savings in utility costs.

Assistant Superintendent Gary Grizaffi explained that using such technology hasn’t always been affordable. However, Solar Renewable Energy Certificates (SREC’s) are now being offered through the Illinois Power Agency, funded through utility dollars collected for this purpose. Grizaffi reports that the combination of energy savings generated by the solar panels, along with the SREC rebates, will actually self-fund the solar panel project completely, and reduce the annual utility bill beginning with the initial date of installation.

U N DE RWO O D Donna Jeanne (Speerman) Underwood died peacefully on September 16, 2016, and was joined in death and life everlasting by her husband Dana Roland Underwood on December 26, 2016. Dana R. was born April 23, 1931, the second of five children to Dana Herbert and Alta (Van Riper) Underwood in Owosso, Michigan. The following year, Donna was born January 30, 1932, only child of Ted and Ruth (Bosserdet) Speerman, also in Owosso. Thus began their life-long friendship, love and dedication to each other. They attended Owosso High School where Dana R. discovered tennis, an activity he enjoyed into his 80’s, and Donna her love of music through the clarinet and piano. They graduated in 1949 receiving scholarships to the University of Michigan where they studied mathematics, and Donna discovered live theater, as a set and costume designer,

a director, and forever an appreciative theatergoer. They graduated with degrees in mathematics and Donna turned to teaching at Edsel Ford High School. Dana worked briefly at Willow Run before joining IBM as an applied mathematician. They were married in Ann Arbor in 1955, and moved to Pleasantville, N.Y to raise a family. Throughout their subsequent moves to Dallas, White Plains, N.Y., and back to Ann Arbor, they never outgrew their Midwest values or their faith in the power and grace of the Lord. They welcomed guests from all over the world to a house alive with laughter and music, and they remained active in their communities and church, giving back in countless ways all the days

Reimagining special needs for better opportunities

Today we can point to examples of the progress that bring people together

Many self-advocates in our special needs community, myself included, are redefining what it means to have special needs. This week, as we begin a new year, let us reflect on what it means to have special needs and what redefinition of special needs can mean to the mainstream community. Together, as we look at the state of special needs, we can redefine new opportunities, and enhance current ones, helping to bring full inclusion to our community. Eliminating division and decreasing challenges within our community will mean the ability for us to dream and to support each other’s dreams.

Twenty-eight years ago was a different time filled with much frustration for those of us with special needs. In my early years, I had lots of developmental therapies that helped me develop and, to some degree, avoid frustration in my communication. I, like others my age, didn’t have access to as many resources as are available today to help us with communication. One therapy that I had included taught me a small amount of American Sign Language (ASL). According to my mom, there seemed to be only a few professionals that were using ASL at the time with hearing children. They were signing only minimally and not encouraging the families to embrace ASL fully.

In my early years, “we didn’t realize that, had we as parents used sign language with you, even though you could hear, we could have helped you avoid much frustration and helped you develop faster,” said my mom Linda.

If only 28 years ago there had been an innovation such as Signing Time, then my family could have learned ASL alongside me and thus helped me avoid so much frustration with communication. Signing Time, a video series promoting ASL to eliminate communication barriers, was created 15-years ago

by Emmy-nominated host Rachel Coleman.

Today, after a quarter-century since my early years, times are slowly making some progress. As many parents receive a diagnosis of a disability when their

baby is born, doctors tend to present this as tragic. It is, of course, a very scary time for families. Many times, families within our special needs community spend months or more in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), or the “Baby ER” as Pulitzer Prize-winning author Edward Humes says in his book of the same name.

Often in the special needs community we end up divided among all the various types of disability diagnoses: from the deaf community to the Down syndrome community and everything in between.

This division within our community can originate from a lack of understanding.

This misunderstanding of those of us with special needs can then lead to a lack of acceptance and exclusion within society. In my early years I dealt with tons of frustration in communicating my wants and needs and personality.

Today we can point to examples of the progress that bring people together.

Through the work done by nonprofits like my own Special Chronicles, nationally like Signing Time and Miss Amazing, and, internationally like Special Olympics, positive change in the disability community is redefining what it means to be diagnosed with special needs. Today, we are seeing those of us with special needs in the workplace; at your local grocery store, coffee shop, and even as a newspaper columnist. Through movements like Special Olympics and Special Chronicles, we create a culture of understanding that leads to acceptance and inclusion for people of all abilities.

As future families have children with special needs, “it is going to be different,” said Diane Compton, mother to a daughter with Down syndrome. “Maybe hard times, but it doesn’t have to be a tragedy.”

An innovation that has made a tremendous impact and eliminated communication barriers for Diane’s daughter, Erin, was Signing Time.

“What I love about our Signing Time events, they’re unlike anything any-

where else,” said Coleman. “Because even as families who have children with special needs, we divide ourselves up like ‘oh I’m going to the deaf stuff or we’re going to the Down syndrome Buddy Walk’ but we still divide ourselves up.”

This year, we must redefine opportunities for people with special needs.

One can do so in innovative and creative ways. In redefining opportunities we create a culture where diversity is not just appreciated, it’s celebrated. Amy Wright, in Wilmington, N.C., started Bitty & Beau’s Coffee, a coffee shop that employs over 40 people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

This unique coffee shop is “pouring it forward” as their advertising says and is evident by the over 10-million views video produced by Southern Living magazine and posted on Facebook.

Special Chronicles, a nonprofit, new media network that I created to give respect and voice to people with special needs, has redefined what it means to have special needs. In creating a media platform that reaches over 38,000 viewers in over 85 countries, I am redefining opportunities not just for myself but many others across our nation as contributors and on-air personalities.

“Full inclusion means the ability to dream and to support each other’s dreams and to dream big,” said Compton about Special Chronicles.

Although we had come a long way before the Americans with Disabilities Act when those with special needs were hidden away and institutionalized, our work must continue. This is especially true in light of news of possible attitudes of President-Elect Trump. We must create more understanding and education about what it means to be diagnosed with disabilities which will lead to more employment of those of us with disabilities.

Join me and let’s redefine what it means to have special needs. Together, we can create full inclusion by supporting the ability to dream big.

University of St. Francis women’s basketball team is ranked No. 1 in NAIA Division II coaches poll

As if being the No. 1 women’s basketball team in NAIA Division II isn’t impressive enough, the way that University of St. Francis coach Sam QuigleySmith has built her program may be even more amazing.

Of the 18 players that currently make up the Fighting Saints’ roster, 10 of them come from hometowns within 30 miles of the university, 16 are within 100 miles and all but one are natives of Illinois.

Seven of the athletes, in fact, went to schools in the greater Will County area with three players on the USF roster from Joliet Catholic Academy, one from Providence, one from Romeoville and one from Joliet Central.

“This is fun,” Quigley-Smith said. “From a coaching perspective, I have been watching some

of these kids since they were in seventh and eighth grade. It is cool when you see them develop in high school and you are close enough to go watch them and then to get them on the team. These are girls I have been watching for eight or nine years and now I get to coach them.”

Currently, the Saints sit 16-0 overall and 9-0 in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference play after defeating conference foe and the No. 3 ranked team in the nation St. Xavier in Chicago.

“When you go on the road, you are going to get the other team’s best basketball,” QuigleySmith said after the game. “They practice in here every day and when they are as good of a threepoint shooting team as they are, I thought we did a great job for the most part on their perimeter players and that is hard to do.

Spartans hold off Wildcats for the win

With a 54-44 win over Southwest Prairie Conference rival Plainfield Central, the Romeoville boys basketball team moved to 7-7 on the season and is getting closer to where coach Marc Howard wants the team to be.

“We feel that we can play with anyone and we feel that we have showed that this year,” Howard said. “This group just has to be more consistent and they have to learn to put together a string

of victories to build some confidence. We haven’t been able to do that and that is the next step for us. We have to show that we can do that and once we reach that step, we can maybe have a conversation about playing some serious games.”

Against the 1-12 Wildcats, the Spartans had more struggles than one may expect looking at the records, but Central has been is close games all season and came to play.

“Those guys from Plainfield play hard and I told coach (Steve Lamberti) that he should be proud of the effort his kids give

out there because they battle the full 32 minutes,” Howard said.

“The way they attack the glass is dynamic.”

Romeoville was able to hold Central off the scoreboard for the beginning part of each quarter, but the Wildcats stormed back.

“It is a game of runs,” Howard said. “We kind of got lackadaisical in the second quarter and I felt like we weren’t rebounding the ball well.”

Offensively, the Saints were paced by Charnelle Reed and Bolingbrook graduate Kamari Jordan, who tallied 20 points apiece.

Jordan scored 14 points in the opening quarter, knocking down all four of her three-point attempts.

“My teammates got me pumped before the game and just told be to shoot the ball,” Jordan said. “There have been a few games where I didn’t shoot or I didn’t think I was shooting as well. They just told me throw it up there and they will get the rebound – but they didn’t need to.”

Jordan said the win over the Cougars vindicated the Saints’ position atop the national rankings.

“This solidifies everything that we have been working for.

For the three years, we have been working hard and we wanted to be No. 1 and a lot of people, I think, doubted that the No. 1 team was us, but I think we proved it,” she said.

Working hard is nothing new to Jordan, who played for Tony Smith at Bolingbrook.

“I know about hard work. He pushed me hard early and I remember those things in times like this where I am tired or I am not shooting too well, I push through,” she said. “If you can get through one of Tony’s practices, you can get through this.”

St. Francis also got 16 points from Kaitlin Aylward and 14 from Bolingbrook native and JCA graduate Christina Ekhomu.

While the Saints had four players in double digits, the real win may have been on the defensive side, as USF held St. Xavier’s Kara Krolicki to 16 points on 5-of-13 shooting and only 1-of-3 from three-point land.

Krolicki came in averaging 20.88 points per game and was one of only six players in the nation averaging more than 20 points per contest. She was guarded most of the game by Romeoville graduate Angelica Osusky.

“We did a great job defensively limiting one of the best scorers in the nation – if not the best scorer in the nation,” said Quigley-Smith. “We limited her touches and she was a focus of ours. Angelica Osusky is really our unsung hero. She busts her butt on the defensive end and that is something that gets lost on the stat sheet. To hold one of the best scorers in the nation under her average or even if she gets her 20, to make her not shoot well is important.”

Even though the win will make sure St. Francis retains its No. 1 ranking another week, it is not something the players look at too much.

“Every time we try and look at that, our coaches bring us down a level,” Jordan said. “We have to stay humble because Sam keeps us humble. She is a humble person herself and that reflects on us. If we do try and look up, she reminds us, that yeah, we are No. 1, but people are coming for us.”

This season Osusky, Jordan and Ekuomu have started all 16 games for the Saints and aided in the success.

Ekhumo is second of the team in scoring, averaging 11.9 points per game and is first on the team with 65 assists. Jordan is fourth on the Saints in scoring with 10.7 points per game, while Osusky averages 4.9 points per contest.

However, even the players that come off the bench understand what it means to be part of the successful group of local athletes.

“Being a freshman, I have watched Christine, Ang(elica) and Kamari growing up and I have played against some of them in high school and now having the chance to play with them is a big honor and having Sam as our coach is great,” said freshman Ashley Hare, a Joliet Central graduate that is averag-

ing 2.4 points per game. “And now, we are No. (1) in the nation and this is cool. There is so much talent in the Joliet area that people miss because they are always concerned about what is going on outside the area. But there is a lot going on at schools like West, Central, Bolingbrook, JCA and Providence and there is a ton of talent there.”

Quigley-Smith says the reason for the success of the program is not only the talent of the local players, but their character and upbringing.

“Our girls do a great job once they get here of working. They are not satisfied with a scholarship or part scholarship. They want to be better players and better people. We try and find

great people from great families and I think that is what makes this all something special,” said Quigley-Smith, a JCA and DePaul graduate. “We have families that can come to games and come out and watch them. I was a kid that stayed home and I thought it was great that I could go out to dinner with my parents after the game and a lot of these girls get to do that.”

Not only do the players get to spend time with family after a game, they get to play in front of them and that is something Osusky says she feels has helped the success.

“It is great because we get the fan base out and I personally think it changes the game to have fans that can come to drive

and support us,” she said. “It really means a lot to us.”

The one thing that could be a downfall to merging a lot of local talent on one team is trying to make a team out of former rivals. That, however, has not been the case at USF. “It is a lot more fun with all these local kids. To be able to play at home in front of friends and family is a good feeling,” Ekhomu said. “It is great how we come together. With me coming from Joliet Catholic, we didn’t really like Providence too much because we were rivals and now I have a Providence player on my team and we just come together and it is a great community feeling. It is great to stay home and just represent.”

“But, I was very happy with our defense and our rotations and the way the kids were communi-

cating. We can build from there.”

Kahlil Blakney paced Romeoville with 13 points, while Dontia Johnson added 12.

“I thought Johnson really established the inside for us and then our guard strength was on display in the second half,” How-

ard said.

As the conference season heats up now headed into the playoffs, Howard said the Spartans know all games are important.

“We are telling the kids that right now, every game matters.

Seeds will be coming out right

around the corner,” Howard said. “We know we let a couple games slip away early that we shouldn’t have. We just want to focus and have a good month of January and see if we can close out with a string of wins that will help us come time for playoffs.”

Friend earns 400th career victory as coach Lewis University head men’s volleyball coach Dan Friend won his 400th career match, as the No. 6 Flyers claimed the 25-22, 25-15, 22-25, 28-26 non-conference victory over NJIT at Neil Carey Arena on Jan. 7.

Friend has won 241 matches as the Lewis head men’s volleyball coach, 17 as the Lewis interim head women’s volleyball coach, 76 as the Newman head women’s volleyball coach and 66 as the Newman head men’s volleyball

coach.

With the win, Lewis improves to 1-1 overall, while the Highlanders fall to 0-2 on the campaign.

The solar panels will be for BJ Ward and Jamie McGee Elementary Schools, and Jane Addams H.H. Humphrey and J.J. Lukancic Middle Schools. Though initially intended for Irene King as well, the school’s roof structural support capabilities were not ideal.

Research shows that the solar panels can generate up to 55 percent of the school’s energy consumption. Over the last five years at those respective schools, the district has spent approximately $470,000 in energy costs.

Using solar panels, that cost will be reduced to $256,000.

In addition, Grizaffi explains that the solar panel system components, both reliable and guaranteed, carry significant educational opportunities, compatible with online learning tools and STEM projects.

Three other school districts in Illinois currently have solar installations.

Legion members expressed their gratitude for the homemade red, white and blue desserts as well as the banner, cards and letters S.T.E.P. students made for veterans who attended the Romeoville Post’s Veteran’s Day luncheon in November.
